Sunday School Preview for Fall 2023

With Labor Day behind us and summer vacations complete, we are now ready to begin again our regular teaching/discipleship ministries—including Sunday school!

As a reminder, Sunday school is from 9-10am from September to June and encompasses ages 3 to adult. We currently have four levels of Sunday school: adult, teen, children, and preschool. All levels of Sunday school will resume this Sunday, September 10. Note that there is currently no nursery care provided during the Sunday school hour.

What are we learning in Sunday school? Below is a quick preview/refresher.

Adult Sunday School: Fundamentals of the Faith
In the adult class, we are resuming our Fundamentals of the Faith course in which we use the Bible to study thirteen foundational truths of Christianity, truths that include both what to believe and what to practice. If you missed any previous lessons in our series, you can find video and audio recordings at https://www.calvaryem.org/sermon-series/fundamentals-of-the-faith/. Our first lesson for the fall will be on the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit.

Teens’ Sunday School (grades 7-12) and Children’s Sunday School (grades K-6): The New City Catechism
Calvary teens and children will resume where they left off in The New City Catechism, a modern version of the great historical catechisms intent on teaching students 52 key questions and answers of Bible truth through singing, teaching, drilling, and other activities. The students are currently on Question 35: “Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through faith alone, where does this faith come from?”

Preschool Sunday School (ages 3-5): Hide ‘n’ Seek Kids
Our youngest learners are going to start a new curriculum this fall from The Praise Factory (https://praisefactory.org/new-hide-n-seek-kids-full-page). Similar to The New City Catechism, the Hide ‘N’ Seek Kids curriculum seeks to teach children sixteen Bible themes, spending multiple weeks on each theme. Children learn these themes as Big Questions and Answers set to music, and these Big Questions and Answers are reinforced via Bibles stories, Bible verses set to music, and various games/activities. The first big question the children will be tackling is: 1. How Do I Know What God Is Like?

We hope that you and your family will join us for Sunday school this year, starting this next Sunday!

  • Plugged-In: Calvary Sermon and Sunday School Resources

Plugged-In: Calvary Sermon and Sunday School Resources

This past Sunday, we began two new message series at church: Pastor Babij began preaching through the book of Colossians, and I began teaching the first module of a foundation-level church history course in our adult Sunday school class. It occurred to me that this time of new beginnings is also an appropriate moment to remember the past, even the past series we have studied together in church. After all, many of you weren’t part of our church when we preached/taught previously—or maybe you were a part and you simply forgot what you learned. Either way, you can still take advantage of our past messages for your spiritual benefit since those messages were recorded and are available to you online.

There are several ways you can access past sermons and Sunday school lessons from Calvary. You can first simply go through our website; visit our homepage (calvaryem.org), then click on “Media” in the top banner (or in the top right drop down menu on mobile), and then click on “Sermons and Sunday Schools.” Or just copy and paste this address: https://www.calvaryem.org/media/sermons-archive/. You’ll then arrive at a page with our most recent messages with several options to search through older messages using filters on the right side of the page (or at the bottom of the page on mobile). For example, you can search by speaker, series, topic, or book of the Bible. We have video recordings as far back as April 2015, and audio recordings as far back as August 1992!

Another repository of our video messages is on YouTube. You can find our channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/CalvaryemOrg, where we also have put together playlists of our more recent sermon and Sunday school series (https://www.youtube.com/c/CalvaryemOrg/playlists).

You can also find and subscribe to our audio recordings via podcast, on iTunes (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sermons-archive-calvary-community-church/id416547595) and on Google Podcasts (https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuY2FsdmFyeWVtLm9yZy9zZXJtb25zL2ZlZWQ?).

Allow me to sample for you several of the different series that we have recorded:

      • 1 Peter, sermon series: A relatively recent series, Pastor Babij took us verse by verse through this letter from the apostle Peter about holy living amid suffering in a one-year study. This was the study that then continued into 2 Peter and Jude, the three letters forming a thematic background, of sorts, to Pastor Babij’s new series in Colossians.
      • Answers Bible Curriculum, Sunday school series: From Answers in Genesis, this was a four-year study through the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, with an apologetic emphasis. We started using video after about the first year, and I continued teaching the class live from Los Angeles while going through seminary. We continued in a second round of this curriculum (the second edition) until Covid issues in 2020 caused us to suspend Sunday school.
      • Ephesians, sermon series: Pastor Babij taught verse by verse through the book of Ephesians from 2012 to 2014. The audio recordings would no doubt serve as an excellent resource as the ladies study through Ephesians this year in Side by Side, our women’s ministry.
      • Biblical Archaeology 101, Sunday school series: This was an eight-week summer Sunday school series on the most important archaeological discoveries related to the Bible. There was so much to talk about in this course that we ended up only covering OT archaeology, but I’m sure you will still find the video recordings very encouraging.
      • The Gospel of Mark, sermon series: Pastor Babij took us verse by verse through the Gospel of Mark from 2014-2017. While getting more reacquainted with our savior is always beneficial, the Mark messages would form an excellent comparative backdrop as we soon begin our study of the Gospel of John.
      • Biblical Counseling 101, Sunday school series: A more recent series, this ten-week class has as an additional title, “Why Do I Do What I Do, and How Can I Change?” As our culture increasingly turns to therapists and drugs to deal with soul-problems, we Christians need to realize the supremacy and sufficiency we have in Christ and his word for all of life and godliness. These recordings will go very well with our new study in Colossians.
      • Ecclesiastes, sermon series: We did a one-year, verse by verse study through this provocative work of wisdom during the height of the pandemic and during that time’s attendant social/political controversies. Though the book was certainly relevant then, I find it keeps proving itself relevant in showing us how to enjoy and make the most out of lives before God while living in a fundamentally vaporous world.

There is, of course, much more in our sermon and Sunday school repository, but I hope this brief overview and sampling not only informs you as to what is available but also gives you several great places to start in making use of these resources.

May the Lord bless your listening (again) to the teaching of his word!

  • Sunday School Preview for Fall 2022

Sunday School Preview for Fall 2022

In place of this week’s midweek meditation, I’d like to share a fuller preview of what’s coming up in our different levels of regular Sunday school this fall, starting this Sunday, September 18, at 9am.

Adult Sunday School: Early Church History
Location: Sanctuary (also available by livestream and recording)
    Led by: Pastor Dave Capoccia

In the adult Sunday school class, we’re going to begin by spending eight weeks looking at the history of the Christian church in its earliest phase: from the Day of Pentecost to the end of the Western Roman Empire (about AD 30-476). We’ll talk about how Christianity expanded widely in the midst of persecution, how government toleration and promotion turned out to be a mixed blessing for the church, and how early Christian leaders had to contend vigorously for apostolic teaching in the face of serious heresies—many of which have reappeared today, 2000 years later!

Though church history never trumps the teaching of the Bible, we’ll discover together just how valuable church history is for Christians in explaining the origin of various religious practices and ideas, in delivering encouragement through the steadfast example of past believers, and in imparting warning about how professing believers sometimes went astray. Join us for this exciting and valuable study!

Children’s Sunday School (K*-6th Grade): The New City Catechism
    Location: Lower Level Children’s Classroom
Led by: Joyce Jin, Kristen Kohne, Greg Ho

Speaking of church history, one valuable tool that Christians have often used to teach God’s truth is a catechism. A catechism is a summary of biblical truth presented in question and answer format. Catechisms were many times used, especially in the centuries after the Protestant Reformation, to educate new converts and children regarding the fundamentals of the Christian faith. Through repetition, those undergoing catechism (i.e. catechists) would memorize a set of questions and answers and emerge with a competent understanding of the core doctrines of Christianity. Note that catechisms are not Bible trivia, rather the reinforced truths shape a catechist’s understanding of salvation and of the world itself.

These days, we may end up quoting historical catechisms without even realizing it. You have perhaps heard of this question and answer: “What is the chief end of man? To glorify God and to enjoy him forever.” That’s the first question and answer of the Westminster Shorter Catechism of 1648. Or you may sing the song from Keith Getty and others that asks, “What is our hope in life and death? Christ alone, Christ alone.” That’s a paraphrased version of the first question of the Heidelberg Catechism of 1543. These simple questions and answers contain within them monumental truths, and we not only want to appreciate those truths ourselves but pass them on to our children.

Which is where our new children’s Sunday school curriculum comes in: The New City Catechism. Developed by The Gospel Coalition, The New City Catechism is basically an updated version of the great historical Christian catechisms for use in teaching children today. The New City Catechism goes through 52 key questions and answers, one per week, related to three main areas of biblical instruction:

    1.) God, creation/fall, and law
    2.) Christ, redemption, and grace
3.) Spirit, restoration, and growing in grace

Each Sunday, then, our plan is to introduce and explain the different questions and answers of this catechism and then help our children memorize them. Through the singing, teaching, drilling, and other activities that will make up our children’s Sunday school class, we trust that our kids will not only grow in their understanding of biblical truth but will also be served for years to come as the truths they diligently memorize come to greater understanding and appreciation in the future. We hope that your children can be part of this study!

If you would like more information about The New City Catechism or would like to read through it, you can visit http://newcitycatechism.com/.

*Unfortunately, contrary to what I previously indicated, we will not be able to include Pre-K children in Children’s Sunday School this year.

Teen Sunday School (7th-12th Grade): The New City Catechism, advanced
    Location: Lower Level Teen Classroom
Led by: Caleb Dagnall, Juliana Dagnall, and Aleksey Chernyakhovskiy

Our teen Sunday school class will also be going through The New City Catechism but at a more advanced level. After all, though historical Christian catechisms have often had younger children particularly in mind, the catechisms were designed to instruct people of all ages. When we think about the need to spiritually equip our teens, we know that they also need a foundational understanding of God, the world, and the gospel according to the Bible, which The New City Catechism will help provide.

Therefore, our teen Sunday school class will also be learning, discussing, and memorizing the questions and answers of The New City Catechism this year. As we work to instill the truths of Scripture in our teens, we will be particularly keen to talk about how these truths should make a difference in their lives and shape the way our teens respond to the anti-biblical ideas of our culture. We would love to have your teens be part of this important study.

The teachers very much appreciate your participation and prayers as we launch these classes, alongside our seasonal baptism and pre-membership class, this upcoming Sunday. May the Lord be pleased to bless our efforts, build up his church, and glorify his name!

  • Fall Ministries Preview

    Fall Ministries Preview

I am excited to announce the new fall ministry schedule! We have made a few adjustments from last year in an effort to better serve the families of Calvary and enable more participation. Our new ministry season begins the week of Sunday, September 11.

The biggest change that we’re making this year is that we’re moving the different family ministries from Friday night to Sunday morning and Tuesday evening. Children’s ministry and teen ministry will now be children’s and teen Sunday school classes meeting at 9am alongside the adult Sunday school class. Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s ministries will now alternate meetings on Tuesday evenings of each month. Young Adult Ministry will still meet on Friday evenings per its previous schedule.

Below is a little more specific preview of the ministries resuming in September:

    • Adult Sunday School (9am Sundays): Sunday school will begin with a presentation from a missionary guest speaker on 9/11. Then, on 9/18, the adult Sunday school class will begin an eight-week series on early church history (apostolic church to the fall of Rome). Also beginning on 9/18 is the 4-5 week baptism and membership class. We plan to offer Sunday school classes continuously from September to June. Note that there will not be nursery provided during the Sunday school hour, but there will be nursery provided during the main service.
    • Teen Sunday School (9am Sundays): The teen Sunday school class will begin on 9/18, and the teens will begin studying through a new curriculum. Teens from 7th-12th grade are welcome.
    • Children’s Sunday School (9am Sundays): The children’s Sunday school class will begin on 9/18 and will also feature a new curriculum and format. Children in grades PreK-6th grade are welcome.
    • Church Fellowship (Sundays after the Lord’s Table celebration): We will resume our monthly post-Lord’s Table fellowship meals together starting on 9/11. The meals are provided through the kitchen ministry. All are welcome, though we ask, if able, for a $5 donation for each participating teen and adult to help cover costs of food.
    • Iron Man (7pm Tuesdays): Our men’s ministry will again consist of large group and small group meetings this year. Large group meetings will be on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month with the first large group meeting on 9/13. This year’s theme is “Knowing God” and will center around a study of A.W. Pink’s classic work, The Attributes of God.
    • Side by Side (7pm Tuesdays): Our women’s ministry will also again consist of large group and small group meetings. Large group meetings will be on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month with the first large group meeting on 9/20. The women will be studying the book of Ephesians this year.
    • Zoom Prayer Ministry (7pm Wednesdays): Our weekly online prayer gathering will continue in the fall but with a new official start time: 7pm. The meeting will still open at 6:45pm for people to come early and share requests, but the actual devotional and prayer time will begin at 7pm.
    • Young Adult Ministry: (7pm Fridays): YAM will continue meeting on the second and fourth Fridays this fall, but the first meeting will not be in September but on October 14. This year, YAM will be studying the letter of 1 John.
    • Nursery, Nursing Home, Kitchen, Book Nook, Greeter, Audio-Visual, Music, and Family Fellowship Ministries will also continue in the fall.

There will be more information about our ministries in the coming weeks, but I wanted you to have a preview today so that you can start planning for and getting excited about what’s coming up at Calvary.

Remember, as we were learning together last Sunday, the church is a special and precious mystery on earth. In being devoted to the gathering, people, and ministry of the church, you both honor Christ and bless yourself. Therefore, please prayerfully consider with your families how you can maximize your involvement in both attending and serving in our church’s ministries this fall.

  • Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

    Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling … “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah – (Psalm 46:1-3; 10-11)

We need to trust the Lord during times like these, while at the same time using wisdom to navigate through these uncertain valleys. It has become apparent that the situation with the COVID-19 virus has become more serious than at first. Just in this last week, we’ve all seen this virus metastasize from a faraway foreign threat to one that is now very much in the very community in which we live. According to our government and health organizations, the best way to prevent community spread of COVID-19 is to limit, as much as possible and with reason, the number of gatherings.

With that said, the leadership of Calvary has decided to take the following temporary measures concerning the schedule of events for church gatherings.

      • Starting this Lord’s Day (March 15) we will go to a virtual format for our public worship service (Sunday school and morning Worship)
By the Lord’s providence, we’ve been doing this even before the crisis, so this should be a seamless transition for us. We will be LIVE STREAMING at 9:30 am on Sunday for Sunday school and 11:00 am for the Worship Service.
      • Online giving is also available online on our website  (click GIVE on the upper left menu) or on the Calvary App for Android or iOS
      • Children’s Sunday school is suspended, although we’ll see if we can get teachers to send out some resources for the kids to do at home
      • Worship Team / Choir / Food and other regular Sunday ministries are suspended as well
      • All other events are suspended for this week (March 15-21).

We are in the process of investigating how some of these events might look like virtually going forward(prayer meeting, bible studies, home groups, etc.) We do these things not out of fear, but out of love. The physical health and safety of our congregation (and the family members we interact with that may be at risk) is also an important stewardship from God.

And, it seems like in the last day or so, most others are following suit — almost all area school systems, surrounding universities, most professional sports teams, businesses small and large, and many other churches in the area and around the country are being canceled or also going virtual for the time being. The speed at which this has happened has been truly breathtaking — we certainly live in strange times!

We are definitely saddened to have to take this step, but we are convinced it is necessary to protect the congregation at this time, given how severe the symptoms can be in at-risk populations, how easily the disease spreads, and how it can be spread by people who do not even have symptoms.

Brethren, this is a time to pull together, to pray, to watch out for our brothers and sisters in Christ who may need our help. This is not a time to complain or grumble. It is our responsibility to keep the unity that the Holy Spirit has given us and to be faithful to one another in our church family.

It is with this great confidence of hope that we together face the trial before us that is COVID-19. Because we know God is faithful, we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” – Hebrews 13:6

We plan to provide you with regular updates as we navigate these waters together.

  • 2019 Leadership Growth

    2019 Leadership Growth

2019, so far, has been a time of change and growth in the leadership at Calvary. We are thankful for what the Lord is doing!

    Deacon Candidates

We are excited to have Erik Van Treuren as our newest deacon candidate. We thank the Lord for Erik and Naomi’s willingness to serve and bless Calvary with their gifts.

Earlier this year, we also added Brian Neves, joined by his wife Michelle, and Bruce Wyder to the deacon candidates.

    Elder and Deacon Ordination

On February 24, 2019, we held an ordination for our elder and deacon candidates during our morning service. Greg Ho, Khaleef Crumbley, Joe Fantuzzo, Brian Gussis, and Ermanno Bibbo (not pictured)  were ordained.

Our pastor preached a sermon on the qualifications of both positions, and then he asked the men to affirm their willingness to carry out what the Lord has called and prepared them to do. Likewise, the pastor asked the congregation to acknowledge their part in helping our elders and deacons carry out their duties.

After this, Pastor Babij and Dwayne prayed over Khaleef and Greg. These four then prayed over the deacons. We then celebrated with our newly ordained elders and deacons in the Fellowship Hall!

We thank the Lord for the many ways he is expanding our leadership and directing our church and pray the Lord will bless and keep these servants as they continue in His work!

  • Our New Hymnals: Hymns of Grace

Our New Hymnals: Hymns of Grace

We recently introduced our new hymnals to the congregation and thought it would be a good idea to share some information here in case you missed it!

    Why A New Hymnal?

Have you seen the state of our old ones? Our previous hymnals have been well-used, and in many cases, beyond repair. It was time they were replaced. Our elders chose the Hymns of Grace hymnal because it offers some of the greatest known hymns as well as newer hymns – all rich in biblical truth.

    Why A Hymnal At All?

Although we are thankful for all that technology has afforded us, using a hymnal allows us to read all the words at once instead of one line at a time on a screen. Also, for those who are musically inclined, having the notes right there on the page allows for beautiful harmonies to fill the congregation as we sing together.

Also, hymns are loved by many and they give us a shared memory for good and lyrically-rich songs. We believe there is great value here that shouldn’t be lost or forgotten.

    “I Want A New Hymnal!”

Copies of the new hymnal are available in our book nook for $20. We are selling them for the same price you would get directly from their website – except you won’t have to pay for shipping! They are a great resource for singing songs together with your family or in your own devotional time.

Also, we are giving away copies of the previous hymnal. If you would like one, please let Greg or Yiyin Ho know.

  • Now Available: Sermon Transcripts!

    Now Available: Sermon Transcripts!

We’re happy to announce that we’ve launched a new resource for you: starting last week, we’re now providing full transcripts of sermons, available a few days after they are preached!
We hope this resource will make it easier for you to meditate on truths throughout the week, refresh your memory of an important point, or catch up if you missed a sermon.
You can read full transcripts of the sermons by going to the sermon section of the church website ( https://www.calvaryem.org/sermons ).
So far, thirty-six transcripts are available online. We intend to a have all the 1 Peter series! In addition, we are going back and getting transcripts for the Hebrews series as well. Lord willing, we will add more every week.
    Enjoy!
