    Side by Side: A Testimony

The following is a testimony from our sister Michelle Neves about our ladies’ Side by Side ministry this past year. I believe you will find it encouraging.

Side by Side is our beloved women’s ministry where we come together to uplift one another. After spending most of 2020 not so side by side, we were all looking forward to the day we started to meet again, but this time with a new addition. Now, I’m not referring to the masks, restrictions, or Zoom meetings, but to the start of having small groups—a smaller and more intimate gathering on alternate weeks of our study. After a year filled with hardship, losses, and anxiety, this has become a wonderful blessing to the women of our church.

We kicked off the fall with an incredible introduction to Romans, which was led by Jayne, Cheryl, and Sherrian. These ladies faithfully devoted their time to bring forth such a rich and well-rounded study of this book, which discusses the essence of Christianity and what it means to be “Jesus-like” people. In saying that, I’d like to commend Jayne, Cheryl, and Sherrian for modeling this example to us. Romans is not an easy book, yet they sacrificially took on this task to make sure we are getting nourished and encouraged through our walk. On top of that, they prayed for us, listened to us, and extended themselves to see how we are all doing and growing in the Lord.

With our large group setting, we really gleaned a lot from Scripture, grew in our understanding of the gospel, and reflected on how the gospel still applies to our culture today and in our personal lives. As we grew in our understanding of the gospel, we also grew in obedience to the word of God. We learned each meeting what it means to live out the two greatest commands: to love God and His people. Romans really brings these two commands to life in the following ways:

In loving God—we learned that the gospel message is Jesus and His work on the cross for those He has called. We are saved and justified by faith and faith alone. We cannot attain righteousness with God through works, nor can we attain the goodness of God through sin. Romans also teaches us that amid troubles, we have hope in our Redeemer, who is also our Intercessor. We have this hope because we have been justified by faith, and we know that God is working all things together for good and for His glory. We also have hope because a new creation is coming where we will no longer be separated from God.

In loving His people—we learned that we are to present ourselves as a living sacrifice to God, so we are to be humble, use the gifts the Lord has given us to serve the church body, and not seek revenge. In addition, we are to obey our government and those in authority over us. We are to be mindful of our brothers and sisters, whether they are weak or strong in the faith. We are to rejoice with them in good times and weep with them in days of sorrow. We are to have grace with our new family as the Lord was gracious to us and to accept one another just as the Lord has accepted us. After all, what we owe to others is love.

In supplement to the large group meetings, we came together in our small group setting to encourage the above truths, express how they apply to us, share our struggles, and pray for one another. When I was asked to lead, I was a new mom to a baby boy. I was incredibly exhausted and in need of encouragement. After prayerful consideration, I decided to take on the task and we began our first small group. I really put myself in the Lord’s hands because, let’s be frank, what good is being sleep deprived in any situation?

My group had some women I already knew and some I had yet to get to know, so naturally, I was nervous. After our first gathering, I walked away saying, “Lord, I don’t know what these women think about today’s meeting, but I am incredibly encouraged, so for that alone, I’m grateful.” From that moment on, we grew in the Word and in our relationships, and we were always uplifting one another.

In our small group, the book of Romans was our guide for discussion. Through each lesson, we shared how Romans applied to our daily lives and our struggles. We touched on very meaningful topics such as having courage to share the gospel, dealing with discord among the brethren, growing in and using our spiritual gifts, and even being gracious to our spouses. In addition, we prayed, recited Scripture, and meditated on some verses together. Our friendships are continually growing, with Christ as the center of our group. Personally, I think about my sisters often, which the Lord has used to grow me closer to Him in prayer. We shared many laughs, too, and enjoyed a nice “Romans” Bingo game on Zoom—it was fun and a great review!

Oh, Zoom…I’d like to take a moment to show my appreciation for Zoom and its role for maintaining consistency. Zoom has been a blessing and has made meeting regularly accessible. This made it convenient for those who were being mindful of Covid-19, the women working late hours, and the new moms like myself. Though gathering in person is always sweeter, Zoom has made meeting often lighter on the commuters. I can see where Zoom, or any other face chatting platform, will always serve a purpose in the church going forward.

Overall, the small groups have been so wonderful and have displayed how much we truly rely on one another in this marathon we all run. The two greatest commands come to life when we meditate on God’s Word together, regularly meet with each other, pray for each other, and consider each other throughout our daily lives. There is something significantly beautiful when we do walk side by side.

Bear in mind: walking side by side isn’t natural. It requires commitment, consistency, and an understanding that we cannot be a full, functioning body when one of our sisters is missing. Otherwise, we are limping through this marathon. Every single person of the church body is essential—you need me just as I need you.

That is why my deepest desire is for us to grow in our love for the Lord and His people. That we would learn to understand what it means to be committed, “Jesus-like” people who serve the Lord with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. That we would continue to grow in the new man and be present in the lives of our new family. That we would be eager to serve and use the gifts the Lord has given us. After all, who isn’t eager to open a gift on their birthday, cherish it, and put it immediately to use? How much more willing should we be to serve the Lord after receiving the greatest gift of all—salvation.

I also desire that we would rejoice or weep with one another in times of joy or sorrow. That we would take each moment we have here seriously knowing that we live before a gracious and caring Heavenly Father. That we would also seek to live in unity with our brothers and sisters, submit to our elders because it is good for us, and hold others in high regard just as the Lord commands us to do. Ladies, here is my admonition to you: love the Lord, love your sisters. Commit to Christ, commit to the body. Let’s stand side by side.

  • Mall Evangelism

    Mall Evangelism

There is an upcoming opportunity to join us for mall evangelism. For those who may have never experienced it, Julie was gracious enough to write about her experience at the mall last spring. Thank you, Julie, for sharing about this ministry opportunity!

On Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14, 2018, members of Calvary Community Church went out into the community for the purpose of sharing the gospel. For years our church has been part of Mall Evangelism, faithfully led by a long-time member. Throughout this ministry, members of Calvary are able to put into practice what they hear each Sunday by boldly proclaiming the good news to the lost.

We typically go to the Bridgewater Commons Mall, where we have a long-standing understanding that allows us to have a table set up by the food court. There, purveyors of the Truth hand out tracts, inform passersby about Calvary Church, and most importantly share the gospel.

This year, our Young Adult Ministry (YAM) was able to apply what they learned during the most recent series through evangelism. After studying how to go through the four components of the gospel (God, Man, Christ, and Response), YAMmers were given a hands-on opportunity to share this simple, yet amazing news with any who would hear.

In addition to being a stepping-stone for sharing the Word of God with people, Mall Evangelism also gives Calvary members the occasion to fellowship and talk with those they might not regularly see on Sundays. While taking breaks or waiting for another person to walk by the table, churchgoers could be seen having conversations with the pastor, various elders, and other church leaders. It was also great to have the younger crowd represented with some YAMmers and families present.

By far one of the greatest benefits of giving up a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon to hang out at the mall is the abundance of joy that is received after being in prayer and fellowship and simply doing the Work of the Kingdom! God is so faithful every time we open our mouths to speak about Him, and He not only blesses those who might believe on His Name, but He also blesses us with a peace and joy that comes from delighting in and glorifying Him.

Calvary intends to continue with this powerful ministry for months and years to come, and encourage all members from young and old to participate.

If you are interested in going to the mall this month, please email the church administrator at calvaryem.adm@gmail for more information. You have to be scheduled for a time slot because the number of people at our table is limited.

    Operation Christmas Child is here!

As a church, we will be participating in Operation Christmas Child (OCC) again this year. We will be collecting boxes on Sundays at the OCC table next to the Book Nook in the sanctuary. There are free OCC shoe boxes there for you to pick up as well.

We will be having a Packing Party in the Fellowship Hall on 11/17 to pack a large number of boxes – please come with (or without) supplies to help out!

The last day to bring in your packed shoe boxes is Sunday, Nov. 19th.

Here are some guidelines and suggestions for packing a shoebox:
-Attach the appropriate boy/girl label and check an age range for the child receiving the shoe box. Visit the OCC table at church if you need labels to attach to the boxes.
-Include a WOW quality toy – doll, soccer ball with pump (very very popular and well received!!), stuffed animals, shoes.
-Fill the box with gifts. Do not include anything liquid or delicate. Also no camouflage items, toothpaste, or candy please.
-You can include a personal note or photo. We will be taking polaroid photos at the Packing Party to put in the boxes.

  • The Foundry Conference 2017

    The Foundry Conference 2017

The  Young Adult ministry (YAM) went to Immanuel Baptist Church in Springfield, VA for the annual Foundry Conference. From June 9-11, they were able to experience sermons centered on the truths which sparked the Reformation (Additionally, in observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, our Sunday School and sermons are currently covering topics regarding the Reformation).

    Martin Luther

The speakers were: Jordan Standridge, Jesse Johnson, Mike Riccardi, and Eric Davis.

Rob, one of our young adults, shares about his experience at the conference:

This year at the Foundry conference I wasn’t expecting to be blessed as much as I was. Everything was great, the preaching, the fellowship, hanging out at the hotel, walking around DC. YAM in DC

But one thing in particular was especially great. Both sermons by Eric Davis had a powerful impact on me personally. The theme of the conference this year was The Reformation. Therefore, Eric talked a bit about the doctrine purgatory and Martin Luther’s conversion. Hearing the details of the doctrine of purgatory was so fearful, sad, hopeless.

Hearing how Luther tried to please God Almighty with his filthy works makes you feel so utterly hopeless, depressed. Is there any hope at all?! Then, in both of his sermons, Eric tactfully transitioned from man’s hopeless attempts to obtain justification by good works, to the mighty power of God in justifying sinners by faith alone in Christ alone!!!

I believe that the reason why the sermons were so powerful was because the Gospel was preached right after preaching the hopeless attempts of man. As a result, the Gospel was like a bright star in a dark night sky. Such powerful preaching! Will never forget that experience.

    YAM Foundry Group

We had a wonderful time of fellowship, powerful preaching, God-centered music, and practical application. We look forward to attending next year!

The conference will be known as The Cripplegate Conference going forward.

  • Our Newest Deacon Candidate: Brian Gussis

Our Newest Deacon Candidate: Brian Gussis

Please join us in welcoming our newest deacon candidate, Brian Gussis.

    Gussises
Brian, Natalie, and their two children.

Brian and has wife Natalie began attending Calvary in 2010. Brian has been active in our Missions ministry and he and Natalie currently administer our Child Protection Policy. They have been a blessing to our congregation and we are thankful that he has prayerfully accepted to serve Calvary in this way.

1 Timothy 3:8-12 (NASB) Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things. Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.

  • The Dexters’ Visit Recap

    The Dexters’ Visit Recap

Our missionaries to the Philippines, the Dexters, came to visit with us this past weekend while on their first furlough from the Philippines in 3 years. A number of families at the church were privileged to spend some sweet time with Chad, Kara Mia, Titus, and Kenan during the weekend!

What a joy it was to hear about their work in the ministry on the other side of the world! We are thankful to see them vibrantly and earnestly working toward the specific purpose of training up pastors to know and adequately exposit God’s Word.

While they were here, we wanted to mobilize the families in our church to care for the Dexters and to show them the love of Christ.

Here’s a play-by-play of how the weekend went.

    Friday Night:

The Dexters drove in on a Friday night (from upstate NY).

They had insisted they did not need a hotel, but would have been perfectly content to stay in any place.  But thankfully, we were able to provide (thanks to the generosity of our church body) a very comfortable accommodation for them and their kids (a suite!).

The Dexters expressed that they were thrilled to stay in a hotel with enough room for their kids after being on the road so much.

Later that evening, Shae was able to greet them and drop off some warm soup and salad to give them a “snack” before bedtime, as well as bring them a few drinks and snacks from Costco for the weekend.

    Saturday Afternoon:

Saturday morning, Chad and his family slept in. Chad reported that it was the first time he slept well in days! Well rested, they were able to share some coffee time with the Bibbos in the afternoon.

    Saturday Evening:

In the evening, the Dexters were able to meet with Roy!  He has been a faithful and encouraging partner for them in the ministry right here from our congregation.

His love for them and prayers were felt and the Dexter’s expressed their thankfulness for his continued support.  In their time of need, their remembrance of his faithful prayer for them brought them strength.

Later that evening, Pastor Babij, Jayne, and Roy took the Dexters out to dinner at a Thai restaurant! They shared about the joys of ministry, as well as the trials and tribulations.

    Sunday Morning:

Sunday morning, the Dexters presented their work in the Philippines during Sunday School.  We got to see their day-to-day ministry – and truly, there is something going on every day!

From Monday to Sunday, they have either a class or Bible study in which they engage with pastors that travel many miles to learn God’s Word.  Whether the Dexters have to travel far or have many people come to their home, they are seeking to strategically reach as many people as they can to properly equip them in the Truth.  By working alongside existing pastors, the Dexters are able to disciple and know that they are multiplying their labor exponentially since this will reach congregations in several cities in and around the Manila area.

Sunday Service was also an encouragement, as Chad brought the Word of God to us from 2 Corinthians 5:18-20. Chad reminded us that the work of giving the gospel is the calling of every believer, not just the “professionals.”

    Sunday Afternoon:

On Sunday afternoon, the Dexters joined (and taught!) the home group at Church. It was a Q&A about ministry and missions that got everybody involved and excited.

    Sunday Evening:

Sunday evening, the Dexters came to dinner at the Hos’ house for dinner with the Hos and the Bibbos! Shae and Yiyin prepared a very nice steak and asparagus dinner, which was a nice treat since steak is expensive and hard to get in the Philippines! And apple cobbler for dessert!

After dinner, Ermanno Bibbo (the barber), was able to give Chad and Titus a very needed haircut, which they had put off getting for a long time due to the business of ministry.

Kara Mia then sang and played some Filipino worship songs for us!

    Monday Morning:

Monday morning, they were off to Texas!

Many thankful text messages were sent, as they expressed that they were blessed by the time spent with us.

What a blessing to have had an opportunity to spend time with the Dexters!  And thank you to everyone at Calvary who generously gave of their time and money.

The Dexters will continue to be in our prayers!

Side by Side – Ladies Fellowship

The Side by Side ladies fellowship met in February at Mrs. Cooper’s home for the monthly gathering.  Mrs. Cooper was a great teacher and taught all of us how to make delicious cinnamon bread.  Jayne shared a short devotional on brokenness as the way to Jesus. It was a great time of relaxing, eating, talking, and laughing.  We are so grateful for Mrs. Cooper’s generosity in opening up her home to us!

  • Recap: Plugged In Greeters

    Recap: Plugged In Greeters

This is a summary of the Plugged In presentation on the Greeter Ministry that Roy recently presented to the congregation.

    What We Do As Greeters:

We distribute the bulletins and welcome everyone to the worship service. For first time visitors, we try to find out more information from them, such as their names and where they are from, how they heard about Calvary, and why they chose to worship with us.  We also let our visitors know how to get around in our church, the location of our kitchen, and nursery if they have young children.   And we encourage them to visit our dining area if they want coffee or something to eat.  We will also introduce them to our elders if they are nearby, and observe to see if perhaps our visitors have any special needs.

But in addition to welcoming our visitors, we try to insure that all of the needs of you in the congregation are taken care of, whether it is envelopes needed for the offering, assistance finding a pew when it’s crowded or assistance getting a child to the nursery.  So our job is to try to help in any way that will make the service for our members and visitors a pleasant experience.

We try to remember as greeters that whether you are a long-time member or a first-time visitor, your walking through the doors of our church is no accident.  Somewhere along the line, the Lord has drawn you to this church.   The circumstances that brought you here might seem ordinary, but the fact that you are here is not an accident.  The truth is that you were chosen to be a part of this body, and in that respect everyone in this church is special, because God called you here.

    Goals of the Greeter Ministry:

One of our most important goals is to make sure that everyone who comes through our doors on a Sunday morning receives a genuinely warm welcome.  We want all of our visitors and members to know that we appreciate their attendance and that we care about them.  And we want to do everything we can to help our members and visitors grow in their relationship with God.

We also want our members and visitors to know that we are here to SERVE you with whatever your needs are when you come.  You know that the Lord took on the attitude of a servant, and so we want very much to do the same.  Serving the needs of our members and our visitors is important to us!

We especially want visitors to return, of course, because we want them to know the Lord and start living for Him.  One of our major goals as greeters is to make people feel welcome so that they will stay and hear the gospel. Seeing them come into a relationship with the Lord is one of our aims.

    God’s Work in This Ministry:

One of the things I like about greeting is that we get to watch the Lord at work when He brings new people into the church.   As I mentioned earlier, many of our visitors come through those doors because the Lord has made them recognize their spiritual need.  And our greeters are the first ones to meet them.

It is interesting to watch the Lord work with some of them.  It is interesting to watch when they come back.   And then within several weeks I see them when they begin to make friends.   After several more weeks of hearing the Pastor preach, I notice that they are being ministered to spiritually. After several more weeks, I see their names on the new member’s sign-up sheet.   Things like this are just a part of how I have seen God work in this ministry and grow our church.

But what can you do as a congregation?  Even if you are not able to serve with us, one of the things you can do to help us when you see visitors is to introduce yourself and join with us in making them feel welcome.  Ask them how they came to visit with us, if they have met the elders of the church, or if they have any questions about the ministries we have here.   Another thing you can do when you see new people is to say a quick prayer for them.    Your prayers to open the hearts of our visitors make a difference in how the gospel impacts them.  So you can really be of help to the greeting team by continuing to welcome our visitors and saying a prayer for them before the preaching of God’s word.

If you have a heart that is willing to serve you are welcome to join us. This is a great way to get to know other people in the church and to give yourself the opportunity to use your spiritual gifts and serve with our greeter teams.  Contact me (Roy) or one of our other Greeter team members, and we will be happy to talk to you.

  • YAM: 2017 kick off

    YAM: 2017 kick off

The Young Adult Fellowship (YAM) will be starting up again on Friday 1/8 for the new year.  The topic that we will be continue to focus on is evangelism.

Here is something to think about before the first meeting:

Are we Man-Centered in our Evangelism?

It seems that a man-centered mindset can plague both the gospel message and the messenger. We have all heard the phrase “watered-down” gospel.  So we are relatively familiar with how the message of the gospel can be man-centered verses God-centered.  Yet, have we considered that even the messenger can be man-centered?  Even a good old reformed believer, can be man-centered in evangelism?!?

If lofty reasons like a love for God and obedience to Christ do not motivate you to share the gospel, then perhaps a love for self, this very man-centered view, is the sinful idol that is dictating your evangelistic endeavors, or lack thereof.  It is man-centered thinking when we only recognize our own desires and thus command our own lives. Then we fail to recognize and apply Christ’s command of evangelism to ourselves.

Why is this so hard to detect?  Well, the very heart of this issue begins with absence.  Perhaps the evangelist, which should be every believer at some level, does not even consider that he is called to this command. It is almost absent from his mind.  He does not appropriate the command to his own life.  However, Christ makes His purpose clear when He declares it in the Great Commission.  We, yes you and I, are to reach the lost with the gospel.

We must realize that lack of evangelism is a lack of appropriating God’s command in our lives to evangelize others, thus becoming man-centered in our thinking of evangelism.  The command is for you!  Go and preach the gospel!
