it’s a privilege to come and um open the word of God with you this morning um we all know of course that the Bible has no contradictions there’s um it’s a sufficient and self-consistent book however there are some apparent contradictions and I’d like to start this morning by examining one with you in the Bible Luke 173 Jesus says this if your brothers sins rebuke him and if he repents forgive him and if he sins against you seven times a day and returns to you seven times saying I Repent forgive him okay that’s simple enough to understand repentance in that verse is a transaction forgiveness is a transaction that requires the offending party to repent if he offends you and then you must as a Christian forgive him but in Mark 11:25 Jesus says this he says whenever you stand praying forgive if you have anything against anyone so that your father in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions well notice that’s not the same thing in the first verse that we read you are to Grant forgiveness if the offending party repents but in the second verse Jesus is Calling You to exercise forgiveness unconditionally while you’re alone in your prayer time whether they ask for it or not so which is it is forgiveness extended conditionally or unconditionally well the way to resolve this apparent contradiction is to realize that it’s talking about two different types of forgiveness Heath Lambert a a well-known biblical counselor describes forgiveness in this way in quote there are two in fact there are in fact two categories of forgiveness the attitude of forgiveness and the action of forgiveness I have some cartoons up here cuz I teach kids Sunday school and uh we haven’t had a class in the summer but you know wanted to help keep them interested so the action of forgiveness and the attitude of forgiveness you see the action of forgiveness is to actually extend forgiveness by saying something like I forgive you but this requires repentance because the purpose of saying I forgive you is to restore a relationship between two people but in order to do this in order to be able to do this in a genuine way you must continually cultivate an attitude of forgiveness in your heart and this is how Dr Lambert describes the attitude of forgiveness quote Jesus is talking about forgiveness as an attitude we cultivate in our soul and to release that person from your anger from your bitterness from the penalty of your sin right there whether or not they are sorry whether or not they are repentant whether or not they have asked whether or not they have remained silent end quote so the idea is that although you cannot extend transactional forgiveness because that requires two willing parties far before your brother or sister repents you must already have forgiven them in your heart so the attitude and the action but of the two by far is the attitude of forgiveness that is more difficult for us this is where the hard work is this is where we wrestle with our hearts this is where we root out the bitterness from our hearts we excise the anger and the resentments and replace them with mercy and Grace and love and boy is that hard it’s hard but as you saw from the verses we read it is not optional for a Christian a Christian must have this attitude of forgiveness and it’s this attitude of forgiveness I would like to spend some time this morning with you to unpack and I’d like to do this in a in a rather unusual way I’d like to introduce you to a somewhat obscure character in The Bible by the name of shimi now to understand shimi story you must know a little bit about the story of King David who was King over Israel about a thousand years before Christ walked on this Earth it’s not an exaggeration at all to say that King David was the greatest King that Israel had ever seen or since he reigned at the height of the Golden Age of Israel it was under David that Israel’s borders were expanded to its greatest extent and furthermore aside from one major blemish that we’ll get to later David is described in the Bible as a man of exemplary Godly character in fact described as a man after God’s Own heart and in fact it was because of David’s exceptionally pure heart and his humble and his deep love for God that he was in fact handpicked by God when he was a boy to become the king of Israel and of course this is the same David who slew the Giant Goliath with a rock and a sling a feat that was so unusual that it immediately catapulted him into Fame and brought him into the courts of the king at the time King Saul but as these things go eventually King Saul came to view David as a threat to his throne and for 10 years King Saul relentlessly pursued David through the Wilderness seeking to kill him during this time David actually had two perfect opportunities to end Saul’s life but because of David’s Godly character both times he refused to do to do so and in one instance in 1st Samuel 268 David and his close companion abishai literally catched Saul asleep and it says this in 1st Samuel 26 it says abashi that is one of uh one of David’s close companions said to David today God has delivered your enemy into your hand now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the ground with one stroke and I will not strike a second time meaning it’s going to take one one spear stroke to kill this guy but but David said to abashi do not destroy him for who can stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be without guilt see despite the wickedness of King Saul despite all the wrongs that Saul had done to David to David the act of raising his hand against God’s anointed king the rightful King was like raising his hand against God himself and instead what David did was that he trusted God to deal with Saul David trusted God and God honored David’s trust and his faith and eventually Saul was mortally wounded by the Philistines in battle in 1st Samuel 31 and he killed himself by falling on his own sword not long after David became the king of Israel without ever having to lay a finger on Saul and this was David at his best his most Godly but then there was that one incident and it’s a big one and and many of you know the story David is installed as king over Israel things are going well blessed by God several years later at the height of his power and his success and his comfort he has Six Wives probably concubines David looks out from his Palace and sees a woman ba Sheba the wife of one of his most loyal and trusted men and she’s bathing on a rooftop and UAH her husband is on deployment fighting a war for David and as David gazed out at this woman his heart was filled with lust and so he sent for her and the scriptures say committed adultery with her and this is all in first in 2 Samuel 11 but the short story is that basba got pregnant and to cover up his affair he had her husband his trusted friend his mighty warrior murdered on the battlefield well God was not pleased and he confronted David through his Prophet Nathan and upon being confronted David does genuinely repent of his sin in fact that’s where he penned Psalm 51 which we read together this morning a Psalm of repentance and a pleading for the mercy of God and did God forgive David what do you think yes God did forgive David this ungrateful this lustful man this adulterer this liar the schemer this murderer God forgives David because that is who God is God is a God who forgives any and all sin but just because God forgave David in the ultimate sense does not mean that David was able to escape the worldly consequences of his sin and that is the nature of Sin Sin destroys sin destroys and sometimes even after being forgiven the destruction of our sin cannot be undone and indeed David although spared by and fully forgiven by God in the Eternal sense was given severe consequences on this side of Eternity one of which was in the prophet Nathan’s words the sword will never disart from your house the sword will never depart from your house that is David’s family would descend into chaos and turmoil and strife and even gruesome violence as a result of David’s sinful actions and that’s so often what it is right the family is the that pays the price for the parents sin and we fast forward a few years later and that that’s how it came to be through a chain of events set off by David’s sin that David’s own son Absalom turns much of the country against his father declares himself King and gathers an army to overthrow his father David it’s a civil war from father and son and this war was one of the lowest points of David’s life and we encounter this man shimi in the pages of scripture at this time the story of shimi is told to us in three acts in the Bible act one is in Samu first 2 Samuel 165 and I I would like you to turn there if you can um in your Pew Bibles it’s on page 3 34 and there’s going to be a lot going on it’s going to the story is going to move kind of fast and I think you would get a lot more out of it if you’re actually looking at the words of the scripture sometimes I get lazy too and I don’t always open the Bible but um if you can please do that today 2 Samuel 16:5 um to 13 act 1 so before we get into it here in our text we find David fleeing Jerusalem this is the beginning of absolum rebellion and absolum has an army and he’s gathered and he’s coming to Jerusalem and David needs to get out he’s not prepared to face absolum at that time and in order to get to where he needs to be he needs to cross the Jordan River and the Jordan River if you want to get there you have to go through a town called bahim and with David is his Entourage of Warriors but in a hurry he also gathers up the palace servants and civilians and they’ve rushed out in a hurry and at this point David is tired he’s depressed he’s sorrowful everything that David has worked for is at risk and in his heart of hearts he knows that this suffering is a direct result of his own sin and and waiting an ambush at bah is our man and let’s begin reading from 2 Samuel 16:5 when David came to baharin behold there came out from there a man of the family of the House of Saul whose name was shimi the son of Gara he came out cursing continually as he came he threw stones at David and all the Servants of King David and all the people and all the mighty men were at his right hand and at his left thus shimi said when he cursed get out get out you man of Bloodshed and worthless fellow let’s pause right there for a second we meet shimi here he is a man who is angry isn’t he he’s an angry man and he has a foul mouth and the scripture says he’s cursing continually I’ve known a few people like that these people don’t tend to be very pleasant to be around and they have anger problems and they’re not very stable but why is this man so angry well it tells us shimi belonged to the house of Saul and when David took over shimi lost out his fortunes declined he perhaps lost political power he perhaps lost clout opportunities and shimya is looking for somebody to blame and of course he blames David now at this time David himself is faced with the possibility of losing his power and shim’s sheer hatred causes him to come out and for no other reason than to rub salt in David’s wounds remember that David did nothing to shimi personally this is the same type of foaming irrational partisan hatred that people have for some of our politicians today and I imagine a fact that if if shimi was alive to he would have fit right into these protests that we see he would have thrived on social media might have made a career out of it and this man is calling names and he’s insulting David and you’re you’re a man of Bloodshed and you’re a worthy worthless fellow a violent good Forno Thug and this should remind you of of Jesus’s words in Matthew 5:22 where Jesus Jesus says but I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be answerable to the court and whoever says to his brothers you good for nothing shall be answerable to the Supreme Court and perhaps Jesus had shimi in mind when he uttered those words but we find that not only is shimi cursing he’s also posing an actual physical threat in fact he’s throwing stones at David and as we know Stones can do some real damage in fact it was a single stone that David himself used to kill the Giant Goliath even today if you try to throw rocks at a head of state you would be sure to be in deep trouble and just like David understood that to raise his hand against King Saul would have been to raise his hand against God himself shim’s cursing and his Rock thr is by extension an attack on God himself even in fact just an insult to the king at the time would have been worthy of capital punishment in every nation at the time maybe even in some countries today but then shimi compounds his sin we see in verse eight look at verse eight the Lord has returned upon you all the Bloodshed of the House of Saul in whose place you have reigned and the Lord has given given the kingdom into the hand of your son absolum and behold you are taken in your own evil for you are a man of Bloodshed this verse these words that shimi utters is a clear example of breaking God’s Third Commandment which is that you shall not take the nor the name of your lord your God what in vain you see shimi is not a prophet but he is presuming to speak for God’s Will and he is wrong about all of it in fact every word that shimi has uttered In this passage is wrong shimi I mean David did not in fact kill Saul his blood is not on David’s hands instead he explicitly refused to do so twice when he could have and what’s more the Lord had not given the The Throne to absum and eventually would not end up doing so so this is fake news shimi is carelessly using God’s name for no other purpose than to twist his knife than to sling more rocks at David and I think this is a clear example of using the lord’s name in vain and Christians today can be far too flippant to throw the name of God around ourselves but when David’s companion abashi pops up in verse 9 I’m honestly a bit sympathetic to abashi verse 9 let’s take a look then abashi the son of zeruiah said to the king why should this dead dog curse the Lord the king my Lord the king let me go over now and cut off his head and funnily enough this is the same abashi that offered to stab King Saul so many years ago I imagine abashi in my mind as a tough guy enforcer that follows David around saying hey boss you want me to kill this guy but David despite shim’s accusations is in fact not a man of Bloodshed and David responds in a Godly way here as he as he did all the days of his life except in the case of Uriah the hittite that’s a direct quote from First Kings 15:5 so let’s watch how David responds in verse 10 the the king said what have I to do with you oh sons of zah if he curses and if the Lord has told him curse David then who shall say why have you done so then David said to abashi and to all his servants behold my son who came out from me seeks my life how much more this benjamite what a Godly response as we go through the rest of the story I’d like to point out to you just to give some structure four characteristics of David’s attitude of forgiveness we’ll see in our the rest of our story four characteristics of David’s attitude of forgiveness first thing we see here is that David refuses to retaliate David refuses to retaliate Again David has all the rights by at this time he could have taken aashi’s advice but David refuses to fight back or in the the words of the Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 3:9 he does not return evil for evil and instead David demonstrates for us the act of turning the other cheek as in fact our lord Jesus himself did when he was cursed at on the day of his crucifixion the Bible tells us that on that day when Jesus was reviled he did not what he did not revile in return and that’s the lesson for us sometimes when somebody offends us the best thing we can do is simply to ignore it to Let It Go likewise as Christians we ought not to freak out over every slight over perceived Injustice or aggression and I’ve seen married couples that act this way with each other and that’s a way to have a non-h harmonious marriage so that’s the first thing simply refusing to retaliate but of course there’s something greater at work here than just grinning and bearing it and if you look down at verse 11 again we’ll see why he’s able to do this verse 11 let him alone from the middle let him alone and let him curse for the Lord has told him in verse 12 perhaps the Lord will look on my Affliction and return good to to me instead of his cursing this day now that’s a funny statement from from David you have to think about a little bit because I mean what does David mean is he is he is he saying that he believes in Karma no this is just an expression of David’s belief in the sovereignty of God David is of course a good calvinist and this is where David’s theology affects his behavior see David understands that God is Sovereign over literally every single thing in the world everything that happens including shimi in that situation and in that time and although David doesn’t think that God is literally or verbally commanding shimi to come and say false things and harass David David understands that ultimately all things are under God’s control and ultimately nothing happens unless God wills and that is the truth for all of us too no Misfortune can befall you unless God allows it and so in David’s case rather than getting angry at shimi David is looking at the big picture and he looks beneath the surface and in David’s Reckoning shimi in fact is not the main actor in the story despite it being called shimi story God is the main actor and because David knows God David knows something else about God and that God is good God is Sovereign but also God is good and that brings us to that second characteristics in David’s attitude is that David trusts in God’s Sovereign plan and goodness David trusts in God’s sovereignty and his goodness see while being sinned against David asks himself what is God’s greater plan he steps back and he asks himself what is God’s purpose in this situation he talks to himself and maybe he says perhaps this is a test perhaps this is to teach me something or perhaps this is an opportunity for me to Showcase my faith but whatever God’s purpose is David knows in his bones that God is good God is a good God God is a God that David writes in the Psalms is abounding and loving kindness he’s a god of Tender Mercies and because God is good David also knows that God will not allow his suffering to go on one more second than absolutely necessary and I think David is is thinking to himself you know if this is a test and I pass this test then perhaps God will deem that further suffering is not necessary and we can get to the good part I don’t think we talk about this enough that God is always in a sense watching you and keeping score uh we don’t like to talk in that way but you know God is always watching us and he’s observing and noticing your good works in fact Hebrew 610 tells us this that God is Not unjust as to forget your work and the love which you have shown towards his name God is not ignoring your good works but he notices them and it’s David’s belief in God’s sovereignty and his goodness that motivates him to have this forgiving attitude because he wants to please God because he knows that God is good and he knows that the sad times will not last forever well did this Godly response of David cause this man shimi to repent well let’s see verse 13 so David and his men went on the way and shimi went along on the hillside parallel with him and as he went he cursed and cast stones and threw dust at him well this worked out exactly as I thought start stop far from stopping his insults shimi is emboldened he ramps up the abuse just picture this he’s here’s David he’s a a weary worried frightened procession of soldiers maybe even servants maybe even children they got out of that Palace in a hurry and as they walk as they make their way to the Jordan River they have to go through this road and it cuts through a valley and this man shimi is on the hillside above them raining down verbal abuse throwing down rocks and kicking up dust and if you’re in the procession maybe What You observe is that there’s now so much dust that it’s difficult to see in front of you it’s hard to breathe they didn’t have face masks but even as the abuse intensifies and escalates David still does not retaliate and that is how act one of our story closes now let’s look at act two for this act two let’s turn to second Samuel 19 Verse 18 so this is on page 338 of your Pew Bible at 2 Samuel 19 Verse 18 very different atmosphere shim’s worst nightmare has in fact come true David has won and he has successfully defeated absalom’s Army and now he is the Undisputed king of Israel coming back to Jerusalem and he is returning down the same path that he came in the other direction but now he is coming down in Victory and the atmosphere instead of being somber and dejected the first time around now it’s celebration and Jubilation because God has given David the Victory and suddenly shimi is not talking so big anymore in fact he knows he’s in deep deep trouble but this shimi he appears to be a smooth talker and he knows he has one chance to get ahead of this so when he sees King David marching back shimi rushes to meet him and we see what happens in the middle of Verse 18 let’s pick up in verse 18 and shimi the son of G fell down before the king as he was about to cross the Jordan so he went all the way to the Jordan River which is actually fairly far if you look at the map so he says to the king let not my Lord consider me guilty nor remember what your servant did wrong on the day when my Lord the king came out of Jerusalem so that the king would take it to heart for your servant knows that I have sinned therefore behold I have come today the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to go down and meet my Lord the king and remember shimi crossed the Jordan River to get to the king first he throws himself at David’s feet and no longer is it you worthly your worthless bloodthirsty animal now it’s all behold your servant my Lord the king now let just pause there and let me let me ask you let’s pull the pull the congregation do you think that shim’s repentance is genuine yes or no do you guys think yes genuine raise your hand if you think it’s genuine all right couple well honestly this is a pretty good speech as far as repentance speeches go right it’s pretty good he’s asking for forgiveness he admit he sinned he’s calling David Lord attempting to demonstrate his sincerity by rushing out and traveling a long distance to be the first to greet David as king and you know in fact it might be an example for us when we ask for repentance we might do well ourselves to model our requests for repentance on this template but doesn’t the timing seem a little convenient and ask yourself that if the outcome was different and it was absolum coming across that River would shimi be singing a different tune in any case our friend abashi is in fool and here he goes again in verse 21 but abashi the son of zeroa said should not shimi be put to death for this because he cursed the Lord’s anointed don’t you love that abai but David in verse 22 David then said what have I to do with you oh sons of zya he say he said that a lot that you should be this day an adversary to me should should this day be an adversary to me should any man be put to death in Israel today for do I not know that I am King over Israel today the king said to shimi you shall not die thus the king swore to him him well we see that David indeed had mercy on shimi again in fact he goes so far as to swear that he will not die by his hand did not have to do that and is this because David believed that abishai was genuine I me sorry shimi was genuine I don’t think he did in fact notably David does not address shim’s confession at all if you if you notice he seems to mostly ignore it and David’s justification for having Mercy on shimi was simply what that God gave him the victory that day that God was merciful to David that day and it was a day for David to show Mercy because God had shown David mercy and that that’s our third characteristic of David’s attitude of forgiveness that I want to point out to you that David shows Mercy because he had been shown Mercy by God God had given him the victory despite the the fact that victory was definitely not a foregone conclusion how could David who had just experienced such mercy and goodness from God turn around and refuse to show mercy and goodness to another so I think David here strongly suspects that this confession is phony yet spares abashi anyways and even swearing an oath that he would not kill him which is far farther than David had to go far far beyond what abashi really I mean sorry what shimi expected or deserved also what abishai expected and just pause here and think to yourself when you are wronged do you remember the mercy that God had for you and that should really be in your hearts all the time that if we have been shown such Mercy why would we not have mercy for another Well many commentators at this point of the story will note that this would have been a very convenient place for shimi story to end because the ACT three kind of throws you for a loop a little bit so there’s a Twist to this story and I love stories with twists so let’s look at what this one’s like in act 3 we’re going to go to First Kings now 2:8 and this is on page 349 if you’re following along in your Pew Bible First Kings 2 verse 8 several years pass perhaps even a decade and David we find now on his deathbed David is dying and David calls over his successor his son Solomon to give him his last wishes and to hand off some unfinished business and David picks up in verse 8 behold there is with you shimi the son of Gara the benjamite of bahim and now it was he who cursed me with a violent curse on the day I went to manah but when he came down to me at the Jordan I swore to him by the Lord saying I will not put you to death with the sword now therefore do not let him go unpunished for you are a wise man and you will know what you ought to do to him and you will bring his gray hair down to shield with blood well it’s an unexpected twist this is years later maybe a decade and David has not forgotten shimi and what’s even more astounding is that these are literally David’s last words spoken with his dying breath I mean the next verse look at verse 10 David then David slept with his fathers he died after he said this his last words on Earth appear to have been an instruction to execute shimi this is wild what is going on some commentators suggest that this is David’s second sin that he’s exercising unforgiveness here did did is that true did shimi live rentree in David’s head for 10 years is this David settling some personal Grudge on the contrary I think it’s just the opposite and if you think about it if David really wanted to have shimi executed as shimi richly deserved then David would simply have not sworn any vow and he could have come back and executed shimi the next day or any other time within the 10 years of intervening and so what is going on remember what abashi said in the last passage he said this should not shimi be put to death for this because he what he cursed the Lord’s anointed and the answer to aashi’s question was yes because his sin his offense was ultimately not against David it was against the Lord it was against God himself and like all of us think of it shimi answers not to David but he answers to God and I think that shimi I think that David purposely waited until his dying breath to give his judgment for shashimi so that it would be clear to everyone that this is not about a personal Grudge but this is about the Judgment of God and that brings us to the fourth and final and maybe a bit surprising characteristic of David’s attitude of forgiveness and that is that David entrusted Justice to God in instead of taking Vengeance on his own hands David entrusted Justice to God because we know here on the pages of scripture that God is a just judge who will always demand a punishment for sin does not let sin go unpunished and David for all of his kingly power could only ultimately delay and not cancel shim’s just punishment and notice that David himself will never see the day that shimi is punished he would never see that Justice be done but that’s okay because he trusted in the Justice of God and I also think that you know David waited those 10 years and in any of those 10 years shimi had the chance to fall on his face and repent before God and if he did that you know I personally think shimi may have been spared and why do I think that because I know God I know that God loves to forgive and I know that God is even more forgiving and merciful than David is in fact Psalm 130 which was written around the time of David perhaps by David himself reads this if you Lord should Mark iniquities I mean sin if you mark sin oh Lord who could stand but there is what forgiveness with you you see the willingness of God to forgive is well known to David and in fact David greatly benefited from it himself but it seems that David that shimi never did get right before God and the time for Mercy passed away with King David there’s one final Arc in our story in verse 36 let’s see how Solomon handles the situation now the King sent and called for shimi and said to him build for yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there and do not go out from there to any place for on the day you go out and cross over the book The Brook kidin I mean the border of Jerusalem you will know for certain that you shall surely die your blood shall be on your own head shimi then said to the king the word is good as my Lord the King has said so your servant will do so sh shimi lived in Jerusalem many days it seems even Solomon in response to David’s instruction to execute shimi even Solomon had mercy Solomon would have been in his rights to summarily execute shimi that’s what he deserved but instead he does something different he confines shimi to the city which are Which is far more generous terms than even minor convicted criminals of today which enjoy and shimi you know you can tell from the text that he knows he’s getting off easy and all he has to do is to stay in the city it’s not hard and he agrees wholeheartedly before of course Solomon has a chance to change his mind and later we find out that he actually swore by the Lord to honor the agreement so he swears by the Lord and had shimi honored his oath he would have found yet more Mercy and he would have lived the rest of his life out in peace in the city but it seems that shimi in all those years had not changed much so if you look in verse 39 but it came about at the end of three years that two of the Servants of shimi ran away to akish son of Masha king of gath and they told shimi saying behold your servants are in gas then shimi arose and saddled his donkey went to gas to aish to look for his servants and shimi went and brought his servants from G so it seems here that shimi lasted for about three years but then notice of course shimi is well off enough to have servants and a donkey and uh that means he’s not suffering he’s not starving but his servants ran away you don’t know why he they ran away but um they ran away from shimi uh to take refuge in this Gentile city of gath and Furious at their desertion he leaves Jerusalem and breaks the terms of his agreement with Solomon to find his servants and drag them back what a foolish man was his anger initially that caused him to sin by cursing David to begin with and it’s likely again his anger here that causes him to break the terms of his release agreement to get his runaway servants there’s so much sad irony here because unlike David who had been shown Mercy shimi having been shown mercy so much Mercy did not see fit to extend Mercy to his own servants in return now this this is not how someone who truly repents and tasted of the mercy of God should act and as you may guess Solomon quickly found out in verse 41 we can end our story sad ending to the story of shimi it was told Solomon that shimi had gone from Jerusalem to gath and had returned so the king sent and called for shimi and said to him did I not make you swear by the Lord and Sol solemnly warn you saying you will know for certain on the day you depart and go anywhere you shall surely die and you said to me the word which I have heard is good why then have you not kept the oath of the Lord and the command which I have laid on you the king also said to shimi you know all the evil which you acknowledge in your heart which you did to my father David therefore the Lord shall return your evil on your own head but King Solomon shall be blessed and the Throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever so the king commanded bayah the son of jeho and he went up went out and fell upon him so he died thus the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon and as you see the the last line is telling because it shows us that dealing with shimi was really about Solomon Solomon established Ling his kingdom it was not about a personal Vendetta of David’s but the fact that Solomon’s rule would not have been properly established had he not dealt wisely and decisively with this very public traitor who brought shame to his nation and sinned against God in such a public way and for 10 years shimi escaped judgment because of David’s Mercy but in the end Justice had to be done for Solomon to establish him as a just King establish himself as a just King so today we saw how an attitude of forgiveness manifested in David and I think the points can go up there again we first saw that David refused to retaliate second David trusted in God’s Sovereign purpose and goodness third David showed Mercy because he himself received mercy and finally David entrusted himself self entrusted Justice to God and if you are a believer in this morning it’s up there I would pray that you would check your hearts to see if you can find this attitude of forgiveness forgiveness in your own heart when you are offended in your own life and I have just one last thing to say before we close the title of the sermon today was shimi story but if you are not a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ this morning it might as well be your story because you see what did shimi do he committed a capital offense by refusing to honor God by dishonoring the anointed king of God and similarly really everyone in this room everyone in the world we have committed capital offenses by breaking the Commandments of God and by by failing to honor his son Jesus Christ and just like shim’s punishment was delayed but not canceled so all of us have been granted a temporary stay of execution but if you have not believed in the Lord Jesus Christ you should not mistake God’s patience for forgetfulness because eventually the time for Mercy will run out and God’s justice will come for you as surely as it did for shimi but the good news is that Jesus Christ stands even more ready to forgive than King David did and Jesus is always ready and willing to extend the action of forgiveness to you for all of your sins if you would come to him so if you would acknowledge that you have sinned before God and committed offenses worthy of capital punishment don’t let let shimi story be your story run to Jesus Fall on Your Knees confess your sins with a humble heart repent but mean it unlike what shimi did believe that Jesus the son of God the true anointed king of God the greater David has bore the penalty for your sins in his own body on that cross and acknowledge Jesus as your lord and your king and then in instead of your head going down to shol as shim’s great head did according to God’s amazing mercy God will instead put on your head the crown of eternal life amen let’s pray father we are so thankful that you are merciful to us that you have not seen fit to have us suffer the punishment of our sin that we deserve and thank you for this cautionary story of shimi seeing that he had so many chances and opportunities to repent but that the time of Mercy ran out I pray Lord for all the people in this room who have not believed in the gospel that you would grant them repentance that they would fall on their knees and repent and have new life and you would grant them the crown of eternal life in Christ’s name we pray

great God as we examine a very serious topic today I pray God that you would speak to your people minister to your people especially God Minister hope you are the god of Hope but this world is hard help us to believe your word and be transformed by it in Jesus name amen as you heard in my prayer where talking about a serious topic and starting on a serious note today perhaps you saw in the news that on last Friday there was a terrible plane crash in Brazil the investigation as to how that crash took place is still on going but one of the things that eyewitness footage has already confirmed is that this plane went down after entering a spin what is a spin you might ask well a spin is one of the most most dangerous situations that a pilot can face spin also called a tail spin for in a spin not only is the aircraft stalling which means its wings are no longer generating lift to keep it in the air and so it’s basically Free Falling but also in a spin the plane is rotating as it falls as it plummets towards the ground and it only takes a few minutes for a plane to enter a spin one moment the pilot is flying high ey and attempting to make a turn but if he positions the plane at just the improper angle based on the plane’s current speed and direction then he will suddenly find himself wildly careening downwards entering the spin you can imagine as a pilot how frightening and disorienting a spin would be part of pilot training involves understanding how to get into and more importantly how to get out of a spin I happen to watch a couple of videos showing flight instructors demonstrating how to recover from a spin and just watching the videos is heart-wrenching because you see how quickly a spin can occur and it indeed looks like the plane is completely out of control just watching you can immediately tell that unless something decisive is done to rescue that airplane the pilot and anyone with him they will perish now thankfully there is a proven protocol for recovering from a spin but the steps to recovery though simple are non-intuitive in some ways the pilot must do the opposite of what he would naturally feel like he should do to recover the aircraft now why do I bring this up to you this morning well it’s to ask you this have you ever felt like your life was in a spin that you had lost your lift do you even feel like right now you’re either in a gradual or rapid descent and perhaps headed towards a disastrous crash on the ground maybe everything was going well for you you were flying just fine but then a severe an unexpected setback came upon you and you don’t know how to recover or maybe you’ve been going through inflight emergencies for a while you’d already lost an engine cabin’s depressurized you’re using the oxygen mask you’re desperately trying to cling to God trying to keep serving him but then another warning light pops on another alarm goes off something else has gone wrong and you say that’s it what’s the use of trying I’m going down our society has a word for this feeling or mood that I’ve been describing and it’s depression but a more biblical and informative term I would say is hopelessness hopelessness or despair our world is filled with hopelessness because life in a sin cursed wrath cursed world is hard and because most people in the world don’t know the god of Hope but even true believers even strong Believers can slip into hopelessness into Times of despondency we know this is true because we see it in the Bible we see it with men and women of God who otherwise would think are quite strong in faith and actually today I want to look at one of those times in the Bible where we see someone who genuinely loves the Lord and believes in Him experience a time of hopelessness even rapid spiraling into despair I want us to look at that instance not simply that we’re comforted that this isn’t an issue that others haven’t dealt with but because in that same instance we see God restore this brother he had fallen into hopelessness we will find that restoration of God encouraging for us and instructive for us as we also battle with hopelessness and help one another to do so if you would please take your Bibles and open to First Kings First Kings chapter 19 title of the sermon today is is hopelessness a self-destructive spiral hopelessness a self-destructive spiral going to be looking at the entire chapter of verse of First Kings 19 verses 1 to 21 but to appreciate what unfolds in this section of historical narrative you need to understand the context so let me provide that for you we’re in the divided Kingdom Period Kingdom of Israel in the North Kingdom of Judah in the South Wicked King Ahab and his wife Jezebel are ruling in the Northern Kingdom of Israel these two have propagated worship of the Canaanite storm God Baal for Israel and many Israelites have abandoned Yahweh their God the true God for Baal where they’ve tried to serve both in syncretism meanwhile Jezebel has killed all of yahweh’s prophets that she can find in steps the Prophet Elijah he arrives on the scene in First Kings 17 to announce a judgment of no rain on the land because of ahab’s and Jezebel’s wickedness and leading Israel into idolatry he then hides and the Lord miraculously sustains him for three and a half years while there’s no rain in the land but then in First Kings 18 which we read part of earlier God sends Elijah back to confront Ahab and the false prophets of Baal and they engage in a little contest at Mount Carmel to see which God Baal or Yahweh can send lightning to consume a sacrifice that’s what it means it says fire from Heavens likely a reference to lightning who can actually send lightning is it baale the storm God or is it Yahweh well Yahweh turns out to be the clear Victor Elijah then proclaims that Yahweh has turned well actually he says this in his prayer right before it happens but he says that Yahweh has turned the heart of his people back and Elijah has the people execute the false prophets of Baal and he tells King Ahab to get ready for the reain to return before a rainstorm comes Elijah supernaturally outruns ahab’s Chariot 17 miles from Mount Carmel to Jezreel which was ahab’s Winter Capital but what happens next that’s what we see in today’s text First Kings 19 I’m not going to read it all at once to start we’ll read it as we work through it this passage divides into five sections and so I’ll give you five headings as we read and examine this passage and see how we’re instructed when it comes to hopelessness by God’s spirit our first section is in verses 1 to4 and let’s read that now First Kings 1:4 now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah saying so may the gods do to me and even more if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to beerseba which belongs to Judah and left his servant there but he himself went a Day’s Journey Into the Wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper tree and he requested for himself that he might die and he said it is enough now oh Lord that’s the Hebrew word Yahweh oh Yahweh take my life for I am not better than my fathers our first heading working through this passage is the servant dispares that’s what we see here number one the servant Des spares notice in verse one that Ahab tells Jezebel all that Elijah did at Mount Carmel hey honey he killed all your precious prophets so in verse two Jezebel sends Elijah a threatening message May the gods punish me severely if I don’t kill you tomorrow like you killed my prophets now the fact that Jezebel sends a messenger rather than an assassin or an executioner is significant it tells us that her threat is hollow if she really was going to kill Elijah really could kill Elijah she would have done that right then besides she appeals to Gods to to to whom or she appeals to gods that Elijah knows they’re not real your oath is useless but notice verse three Elijah’s response he responds with fear he even runs for his life all the way to Beba they say What’s significant about berseba consider its location it’s at the southern end of the territory of Judah right on the edge of the Wilderness so he’s in the northern kingdom he doesn’t even feel safe going into the southern Kingdom he goes right to the border of the Southern Kingdom on the edge of the Wilderness he’s trying to get as far away from Jezebel as he can and then we also see in verse three that Elijah leaves behind his servant that’s curious Elijah aren’t you going to need your servant’s help especially as you prepare to do the next thing that God’s called you to do in Ministry Elijah makes clear in verse SW that he never intends to return to prophetic Ministry it says he goes a Day’s Journey Into the Wilderness and what that means is the rocky Barren desert south of Judah Elijah sits down under a juniper tree then he ask God to kill him talk about a tailpin Elijah what on Earth has happened to you is this the same bold Prophet who confronted 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the ashra by himself look at you what’s going on now we get a clue into Elijah’s mind when we hear him speak in verse four he first says to God it is enough this is that short Cry of despair that many of us have uttered before maybe not out loud but in our hearts God I’ve had enough I’ve reached my limit I cannot take anymore I can’t go on this is too much this is all too much for me second he says now oh Yahweh take my life has life ever overwhelmed you to the point that you wished to die you wish that you were dead Elijah’s wish here now significantly he does not try to take his life that was understood among the Jews suicide is not an option God is the only one who can give and take life but Elijah like job and like a few others he’s at such a low point that he wishes that he were dead third he says for I not better than my fathers not better in what way Elijah not more righteous not more able to endure hardship not more able to be successful and produce change in Israel probably all of those things in fact to get a handle on the change that is taking place in Elijah’s mind we just need to consider verse four in light of First Kings 18 why has Elijah turned from Bold Faith broken despair the answer is simple dashed expectations Elijah thought something would happen was hoping something would happen was sure that God would make it happen and it didn’t happen the Elijah loves the Lord he hates baalism and he longs to see his own people repent and with the Mount Carmel show down Elijah thought Israel was on the verge of Revival three and a half years of Elijah’s being on the Run were coming to an end consider his excitement as Elijah runs to Jezreel to the capital to help oversee the transformation of syncretistic Israel back into a true Kingdom of priests and a holy nation like God had always designed Israel to be this was his happy expectation remember he even said you are turning the hearts of your people God back to yourself it’s going to happen right now but what does Elijah find when he arrives in Jezreel not the upsell of support from the people that he expected but apathy from both people and King worse the decisive defeat at Carmel of the prophets of Baal has not daunted Jezebel one bit though Limited in her abilities to inflict Vengeance Jezebel is clearly as defiant as ever and determined to see bism Victorious and even Elijah killed so then to Elijah all that effort all that hope all the ministry up to this point that Elijah has Faithfully pursued what does it look like what does it feel like it feels like it’s all for nothing nothing to show for it nothing is changing God I’ve been putting my life on the for years I’m hated I’m a fugitive I’m trying so hard for you and nothing is changing what’s the point who can keep going who can keep going when it’s all useless God just kill me now I’m not a superhero I can’t endure such hardship when there’s no hope there’s no hope of relief and no Hope of Victory I think this is very relatable has your heart ever felt or said the same thing did you have some hope or expectation for your life but then you saw it dashed multiple times God I thought my spouse would change but it’s been years my spouse is as wicked as ever God I thought you’d heal me of this illness it’s only gotten worse God I thought you’d use me to save my family but now they’ve disowned me God I thought I’d be married by now God I thought you would grant us children don’t you love children God I thought you’d provide a job I’m barely getting by God why are you doing this God why aren’t you providing why does it seem like nothing is working out why is nothing changing God where are you well if your heart has ever cried out in that way we keep listening because God has something to say to you to say to us this morning we see number one the servant Des spares but now God enters the picture to help his downcast servant our next section appears in verses 5 to8 and the heading is number two God ministers the servant despairs but God ministers let’s read verses 5 to 8 he laid down and slept under a juniper tree and behold there was an angel touching him and he said to him arise eat then he looked and behold there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water so he ate and drank and lay down again the angel of Yahweh came again a second time and touched him and said arise eat because the journey is too great for you so he arose and ate and drank and went in the strength of that food 40 days and 40 nights to Horeb the Mountain of God in this section of text we find something very surprising at elow Elijah’s doubt and cry of Despair we do not hear a word of rebuke from God nor do we find a word of comfort or instruction none of these yet instead we find the Lord himself tenderly meeting Elijah’s needs after all Elijah is very distressed he has no doubt been desperately fleeing from Jezebel he must be physically and spiritually exhausted he is spent in every way so what does the Lord provide for Elijah food drink and sleep Elijah I know you need these things I’m going to provide these for you and notice verse 7 identifies the ministering Angel as the angel of Yahweh now that’s a significant title the rest of the Old Testament reveals that the angel of Yahweh is actually Yahweh himself so this means that God doesn’t just send Aid to Elijah in Elijah’s distress the Creator himself comes down to minister to Elijah and meet his needs now that is a loving God and Mark this Brethren the same God who is so committed to tenderly caring for Elijah also tenderly cares for his own sheep today even you and me when we are faced with the temptation to despair twice Elijah sleeps twice Elijah eats and notice why notice why specifically God urges Elijah to eat in verse 7 he says because the journey is too great for you in other words where you’re going Elijah you’re going to need extra sustenance now verse eight says that Elijah goes in the strength of that bread and water that food and water 40 days and 40 nights that description of Supernatural sustenance should sound a little familiar who else in the Old Testament went without eating and drinking for 40 days and 40 nights Moses Exodus 34:28 and where did that take place the same place to which Elijah is going Mount Horeb also known as Mount Si you see something important for Elijah is about to go down at this ancient sight of God’s revelation to Moses but as we’re about to see it’s going to be a little different for Elijah than it was with Moses they come now to our third section which is the center of our text verses 9 to 14 number three god instructs god instructs let’s read verse 9 and following then he Elijah came there to a cave and launched there and behold the word of Yahweh came to him and he said to him what are you doing here Elijah and he said I been very zealous for yah the god of hosts for the sons of Israel have forsaken your Covenant torn down your altars and killed your prophets with a sword and I alone him left and they seek my life to take it away so he said go forth and stand on the mountain before Yahweh and behold Yahweh was passing by and a great and strong wind was rening the mountains and breaking in pieces the Rocks before Yahweh but Yahweh was not in the Wind and after the wind an earthquake but Yahweh was not in the earthquake after the earthquake a fire but Yahweh was not in the fire and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing when Elijah heard it he wrapped his face in his mantle and he went out and stood at the entrance of the cave and behold a voice came to him and said what are you doing here Elijah then he said I have been very zealous for Yahweh the god of hosts for the sons of Israel have forsaken your Covenant torn down your altars and killed your prophets with the sword and I alone am left and they seek my life to take it away in verse 9 we immediately discover more details that should remind us as they surely reminded Elijah of Moses meeting with God on Mount Si in Exodus 33:18 Moses Express his expressed his desire to see the Lord’s glory god granted Moses request but in a very particular way which is described in Exodus 34 God hid Moses in the Clift of a rock which is another way to refer to a cave until God’s glory passed by and when it was safe Moses went to the entrance of the cave cave to gaze at God’s back God then declared his name to Moses resulting in Moses bowing down to worship God you may notice we have a similar setup here notice the word that comes to Elijah from Yahweh in verse 9 a question what are you doing here Elijah this question is a gentle rebuke from God to Elijah Elijah there’s no good reason for you to be here you’re supposed to be back in Israel serving and speaking for me but by asking a question God gives Elijah a chance to explain himself notice in verse 10 Elijah in his reply he gives a depressing and mostly true report of the situation in Israel he says I’ve been very zealous and faithful for you I’ve been very zealous and faithful on God’s behalf Israel though has been stubbornly unfaithful and resistant to God’s prophets in fact I’m the only one left wait a second is that true is Elijah the only faithful Prophet left Elijah actually made the same claim back at Mount Carmel but in a passage we didn’t get to read the beginning of First Kings 18 the beginning of First Kings 18 shows that that technically is not true Elijah you’re not the only Prophet left Obadiah says I’ve actually hidden another hundred prophets of the Lord don’t tell Ahab but there are other hundred other prophets that I’ve been protecting so why does Elijah say he’s the only one well perhaps Elijah was the only currently active prophet in Israel the others were in hiding but certainly Elijah felt like he was the only faithful Prophet left and that’s pretty consistent with hopelessness right you feel alone you feel like you’re the only one going through your circumstance we can sum up Elijah’s reply to God in this way God I’m here because the situation in Israel is hopeless I fought hard but the people are unmoved they’ve killed everyone else now I’m next why go on why keep fighting a doomed battle give me some reason show me some sign that I should take up the sword and shield again perhaps that’s what Elijah is looking for God gives Elijah a sign all right but not at all the one Elijah expects verse 11 says behold Yahweh was passing by wow it seems like Elijah is about to get the full Moses Sinai experience God passed by Moses God’s about to pass by Elijah and notice in verses 11 to 12 we have a succession of these terrifying and Powerful momentous happenings we have rock splitting wind then we have earthquake and and then we have fire this have been awesome and very reminiscent of the first experience at SI maybe not with Moses so much but forces of fire and storm were Unleashed on Mount Si when Israelite when the Israelites first came there in Exodus 19 and 20 but there is one great difference between that and what’s happening here because Exodus 1918 says Yahweh descended upon Mount Si in fire other words Yahweh was in the fire but what do we read here Yahweh was not in the wind not in the earthquake and not in the fire specifically the text says that three times but what comes after the fire and what is the only happening as part of yahweh’s passing by that does not include the phrase but Yahweh was not in it the end of verse 12 says and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing now there’s a phrase that is one of the most intriguing in the Bible the sound of a gentle blowing the King James famously translates this phrase as a still Small Voice ESV says the sound of a low whisper NIV says a gentle whisper why is there such variation in Translation it’s because the phrase itself doesn’t seem to make sense on its own in Hebrew literally the Hebrew phrase is the sound or the voice of a thin silence the the sound of a thin silence now what sound does a silence make silence is the absence of sound and what’s a thin silence what’s the difference between a thin silence and a regular silence translators do their best to understand this phrase and that’s why we see their attempts and variation but I think the phras is Mystery is part of the point after all the clamor of the Windstorm the earthquake and the fire what comes next for Elijah is this silent thin sound or a vibrant silence as one translator puts it out of all these four phenomena which is the one that manifests the Lord’s special presence it’s this silence this mysterious silence and Elijah himself realizes this for notice verse 13 says that it’s at the silence or whatever sound that was that gentle quiet sound it’s at the silence that Elijah wraps himself and goes to the entrance of the cave and why would he do that to behold Yahweh passing by now consider the implication of this despairing alijah has come all the way to SI because he doesn’t see Yahweh at work doesn’t see Yahweh at work in Israel doesn’t see Yahweh at work in his life and therefore he has no hope Elijah wants to see at sin some dramatic action he wants to see some Sinai fire both at Sinai and maybe even in Israel God I want to see you on the move but God shows Elijah at sin Elijah I can bend Heaven and Earth dramatically as part of fulfilling my will but that’s not how I’m choosing to work right now you think because you don’t hear or see anything that I’m absent but I tell you I am there and I am working even in the silence do you see that this same truth this same fundamental truth applies to us today those of us who are in Christ really this is the main takeway of our passage whenever you think that God has abandoned you or failed to act you need to realize that God is there he hasn’t abandoned you God is there and he’s actually working in the silence the silence is not a mark of him being absent it’s actually a mark of him being there he may be unseen he may be unheard but he is still there and bringing about his perfect will for you and the world God never stops working not for his own sake and not for the sake of his people sometimes his work is obvious loud dramatic sometimes it’s quiet even silent but God is always there God is always working and his works are always good not just good for the universe good for you he’s working for your good this is the great object lesson of Elijah’s experience at SI but did Elijah understand it apparently not because you may notice in verse 13 when God asks Elijah again what Elijah is doing there Elijah gives the exact same dejected response as he did before word for word what’s this tell us Elijah didn’t get it Elijah missed the object lesson he goes back to his prepared speech for Why God there’s no reason to go on so God our God graciously and patiently comes at the issue for Elijah from another angle which is what we see next in our fourth section verses 15 to 18 this is number four God commissions God commissions verse 15 Yahweh said to him go return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus and when you have arrived you shall anoint Hazel King over Aram and juu the son of nimi you shall anoint King over Israel and Elisha the son of shaffat of Abel Mah you shall anoint as prophet in your place it shall come about the one who escapes from The Sword of Hazel juu shall put to death and the one who escapes from The Sword of juu Elisha shall put to death yet I will leave 7,000 in Israel all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him notice here that God gives Elijah a new task and Direction excuse me a second God tells Elijah to go back through the Wilderness and start heading toward Damascus in Syria God then tells Elijah that Elijah is to anoint three individuals haziel King over Aram or Syria J King over Israel and Elisha as Prophet to succeed Elijah now note that these anointings represent pretty dramatic geopolitical changes totally new rulers in these in in these places and a new prophet and notice the purpose notice a purpose revealed by God about these three anointed men in verse 17 these three God says are going to work together to put certain fugitives to the sword whoever escapes from one man the other two will make sure to track that fugitive down down and execute him now which fugitives does God have in mind well remember Elijah has just been complaining about how Israel’s turned to bail worship and God apparently hasn’t done anything about it bail worship is also the subject of Verse 18 so we can infer that this word about fugitives is actually God proclaiming a coming judgment on baalism in Israel God is saying Elijah you think I’m not doing anything about this heinous bail worship I tell you I am in fact you have an important part to play in what I’m doing go and anoint these men that I will use in the future to punish Unfaithful Israelites and eradicate state sponsored bail Worship in Israel but also notice Verse 18 God clarifies that not everyone will need to be judged in Israel there are yet God says 7,000 who have not bowed to or kissed statues of bail in worship and notice the way God says this he says I will leave 7,000 why is that phrase significant because like Greg was praying earlier in our service it emphasizes that God is in total control yes even over the hearts and salvation of men in summary God is telling Elijah big change is coming judgment is coming but so is the preservation of a Remnant that I myself have chosen and will cause to remain faithful now why would these newly revealed facts be significant for Elijah well first first because they revealed that God really is active he has already taken notice of the situation second because they revealed that Elijah Zeal for the Lord is not in vain rather Elijah still has an important role in bringing about God’s Will and third because they show that Elijah was never totally alone he thought he even insisted he was the last faithful Yahweh worshipper in Israel but God reveals you’re not the only one there are others like you out there I will cause them to stand I will cause you to stand get back into the ministry for my sake and for theirs really what we’re seeing here in this commission is a more D direct explanation of the object lesson that God previously showed Elijah God is telling Elijah you can’t see it yet Elijah but know that I am in fact at work I’m here I know and I’m at work but you know what’s so striking about this commission given by God to Elijah to anoint these three men so they may bring about God’s intended changes for Israel Elijah is not going to be on the earth to see these things come to their completion if you keep going in the record of Kings we’re only in First Kings 19 you’ll see that everything that God promises here does come to pass but largely without Elijah’s direct involvement it’s Elisha who anoints haziel King over Aram in 2 Kings 8:7 to15 it’s some unnamed prophetic assistant who anoints juu King over Israel in 2 Kings 91-113 Elijah didn’t actually do it himself well does that mean that Elijah was unfaithful he ultimately proves derelict in his prophetic duties he never really gets back back into the good fight of faith for God’s sake I would say no God’s continual affirmation of Elijah as you go through the book of Kings and the Glorious departure that God arranges for Elijah via Chariots of Fire in Second Kings 2 they argue otherwise God was not considering Elijah an Unfaithful Prophet no Elijah indeed returns to faithful service but he only sets the wheels of God’s plan into others would literally take up the mantle of Elijah to see to completion the commission given to him by God here in other words Elijah’s important work given to him by God it was part of a multi-generational plan not a plan of just a few years but decades or even more Elijah would not be on the earth to see the working of God come to its dramatic conclusion yet Elijah had an extremely important role to play a critical role to play in God’s plan and there are implications for us there too aren’t there let’s face it we will you will encounter moments when God is silent you don’t see him you don’t see him working working and it will be obvious to you that great changes seem to be needed in your life in the world you may not see anything happening in the moment but take the same courage from God’s commission that Elijah was meant to take here you too have an important role to play in God’s plan you have important work to accomplish for the Lord work that you may not see the good outcome for a while maybe not this year maybe not 5 years maybe not 50 years maybe not until after you are with the Lord we tend to get micr focused on our momentary struggles but we need to remember that God he’s with us in those micro struggles but he is accomplishing something in them that is cosmically Grand your work is not in vain in the Lord but you must realize that it may be a while until you understand how it is not in vain in the Lord how specifically what must you do in the meanwhile you must trust God you must believe that he is working out his good purpose for you and through you and get back to what he has called you to do and to focus on how does Elijah respond to his new commission from God we see the beginning of his response in our last section which is verses 19 to 21 number five the servant obeys the servant obeys so he departed from there and found Elisha the son of shaffat while he was plowing with 12 pairs of oxen before him and he with the 12 and Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said please let me kiss my father and my mother then I will follow you and he said to him go back again for what have I done to you so he returned from following him and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the Implements of The Oxen and gave it to the people and they ate then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him we see in this last section that Elijah gets right to work with part of his new commission from God Elijah seeks out Elisha in Elisha’s Village in Israel and marks Elisha for prophetic succession but would Elisha actually follow Elijah I mean when so many in Israel were seeking the Bales what are the chances that this random Israelite will drop everything for a dangerous life of serving Yahweh and serving Elijah The Marked Man notice Elisha’s response to the ministry Callum verse 20 Elisha begs leave to say goodbye to his family uhoh is this request a sign of hesitation toward God’s call even of repudiation may be reminded of what a certain disciple said to Jesus in Luke 9:61 well let me go let me go say goodbye to my family Elijah responds to this request from Elisha by basically saying you’re free to go back I’m not forcing you to do anything choose what you want but young Elisha doesn’t Sher the calling on the contrary as we read Elisha takes the ox with which he was just plowing along with their yoking equipment and he prepares a final meal commemorating his entering Yahweh service in other words Elisha makes clear he’s totally giving up his old life to follow Yahweh and serve Elijah you think these events might be encouraging to Elijah of course and the Lord knew that they would be encouraging not only does Elijah begin to see what begin to see God’s work coming to pass God’s plan coming to pass but Elijah gains a fellow Minister and a friend even someone who’s just as zealous for Yahweh as Elijah is what a compassionate work of God Elijah says I’m the only one there’s no one who’s willing to stand with me God says just keep going and look I’m going to provide someone he’s going to stand with you even even when it seems like no one else will and again there’s implications for us Brethren you will experience similar similar blessing and encouragement when you step away from despair when you step away from your own expectations about how life is supposed to go for you and when you step back into Faith filled obedience to God it will be hard especially at first to let go of those thoughts of Woe Is Me inadequacy self-pity but as you proceed by faith into the work that God has calls you to upheld by his strength and not your own you do you will discover the goodness of God again especially as he brings Brethren around you to encourage you and to serve alongside you for his part I Elijah would go on to faithful Ministry and he would again see dramatic acts of God’s power and faithfulness but in this moment of seeming Silence from God Elijah desperately needed reorientation from God a away from spiraling Despair and our gracious God provided that but this passage is provided for us as well do you realize that God is speaking to us this morning even so that you might experience a similar restoration and transformation as Elijah be rescued from Despair and even made to help others who are being tempted in that way really the truths we saw just summarizing this passage are actually a pretty good application outline for dealing with hopelessness I mean just look at the outline again the servant Des spaires all of God’s servants will face Temptation towards discouragement and despair if you haven’t faced that significantly in your life yet you will but number two God ministers God and tender kindness will minister to us when we Face despair even by the simple goodness of his creation and meeting our physical needs number three God instructs in those moments of Temptation towards despair God instructs us that when we think that God is absent and silent to remember that God is both present and working in the silence for our good and his ultimate Glory number four God commissions God therefore commissions us to fulfill our meaningful calling by faith it is never in vain the work is too much for us but is not too much for Emmanuel God With Us he says go into the work and I will provide and number five the servant obeys when we return in obedience to the work of the Lord he will eventually vindicate our trust in him and he will bless us with the encouragement of our fellow soldiers in Christ you know I mentioned in the beginning that the basic recovery protocol for a plane in the spin is simple but it is counterintuitive for instance from what I read in spin you actually need to point the nose of the plane down rather than up which is the opposite of what you might naturally expect something similar is true for us in our battle against despair if you’ve ever dealt with despair if you’ve ever dealt with hopelessness what does it do it tends to drive you away from all the people and things that can actually help you you don’t want to be around people you don’t want to pray you don’t want to read God’s word you ultimately are tempted to withdraw from God and withdraw even from the goodness of his creation I don’t want to eat I don’t want to do fun things anymore this is why I say hopelessness is self-destructive even a self-fulfilling prophecy of Doom it’s not that God is going to abandon you but when you keep withdrawing from God you are moving yourself towards ruin therefore the steps necessary to escape despair must be taken by faith against your feelings your feelings which are being heavily informed by the flesh the old man in your flesh believe me you will simply want to withdraw and wallow but that will never help it will only increase your sense of hopelessness increase the problems in your life and you know this if you’ve ever experienced this yourself you must go against your flesh you must keep pursuing the Lord and his kingdom and God will show you good again his timing his way but he says keep going it looks like I’ve been blocked out by a cloud it looks like I’m silent but I’m there keep going you will see my light again you will see my goodness again it’s like I sometimes remind people the only way out of your bad situation is faith not faith that God will simp simply make everything better immediately the faith that God will enable you to endure it that God is good that his promises will not fail that is the only way out if you just follow the flesh you follow the world’s advice you’re not going to find rescue the only way out is faith God says keep holding to me you will see good again now if you are facing despair but you don’t know Christ well then the very first thing you need to do is you need to come to Jesus you need to come to Jesus in Repentance and Faith because you are in this section of Kings as well but you’re not Elijah you’re the prophets of Baal remember the prophets of Baal they called out to their God the whole day they screamed they cut themselves but what does the scripture say there was no voice there was no sound nobody heard nobody did anything if you don’t know Jesus Christ if you haven’t repented and believed in Jesus then you don’t have a true God to help you you can’t even help yourself because ultimately you’re not in control God is and worse the prophets of Baal not only did they not see their God provide but they were judged by the the true God they were put to death in accordance with the law and we’re aware of the other scriptures that that’s just the beginning Revelation warns us against the second death which doesn’t end which is the Lake of Fire God says for all those who ought to turn to me as their creator as the Lord but they instead trust in themselves live for themselves seek out the Treasures of the world for themselves instead of me they will one day be judged there is no hope for you outside of Christ but there is abundant Hope For You In Christ if you will turn from your sins if you will turn from the lordship of your own life if you will turn from all your self-righteous efforts to make yourself right with God this is what repentance means if you will turn from all that and take Jesus take Jesus as your lord and savior it’s his perfect life on your behalf and his sacrificial death on your behalf that is the only way you can be made acceptable to God it’s the only way and it’s the sure way because God has already shown that he accepted his son’s sacrifice he accepted his life he accepted his death and he says all those in him are saved and safe because I raised my son from the dead and he’s sitting at the right hand of God now so repent turn and believe take Jesus as the only one who can make you right with God take him as the Lord of your life and follow follow him and God says not only will you find rest for your souls right now because now I’m your God who takes care of you now I’ve settled the most terrible things that were looming over you they’ve been you’ve been saved once and for all but when you’re through the soour of this life you will enter into the kingdom of God with his son the Lord offers you that today he is the only sure hope hope he is the only true hope in this world will you really hope in something else that’s ultimately going to fail now before he ascended back to Heaven Jesus reminded his followers in Matthew 28 that all authority in Heaven and Earth had been given to him but what else did he tell his disciples he says behold I am with you even to the end of the age do you know that’s statement is really a parallel to the central truth of this passage Jesus told his disciples that they would face trials and you know what we know that that’s true because we are facing them even now Jesus says I am with you I am with you in the trouble I am with you in the storm I am with you in the silence and I am working all authority has been given to me in heaven and on Earth I am there and I’m at work so take courage do not be afraid do not despair hope in the Lord he will vindicate you and you will see his good again let’s encourage one another with that truth continually because we need it let’s close in prayer Lord God thank you for this scripture thank you for all of your word because when we face what this world really is because of sin when we Face the calamities when we Face the Sorrows when we Face the Troubles of this world God we without you would quickly lose hope we realize how little control we have we realize how all our dreams and expectations just get shattered right and left but God you have a purpose even in those things that yet remain in this unredeemed world for the good of your people you say yes you are experiencing Calamity you are experiencing hardship that doesn’t seem to have an end but I’m working in it I’m there I’m with you and I’m working in it for your good don’t despair keep going you will see my goodness again Lord would help us help us to believe that when the Trials Come Lord it is easy to sing this when we’re not not going through the trials but Lord help us to believe this when we are going through the trials Lord you will never leave us or forsake us and the testimony of Elijah the testimony of job the testimony of habach even the testimony of your own son as he faced the cross was my God will vindicate me in the end you will raise us up from the dust you will restore us more than that one day Lord you will seat us on Thrones to rule in your kingdom what a great God you are your tenderness your wisdom your sovereignty they are all ually on display help us Lord against the flesh the world and the evil one the evil one especially Lord wants us to despair he cannot destroy us eternally those who us are in Christ we’ve been saved once and for all but oh how he can hobble us oh how he can cause us to lose out on reward because we can get so discouraged we can really lose hope but we know the schemes of the evil one so God help us to not only believe your word but continually draw close to you even by fellowshipping with one another it’s no accident that your word says encourage one another as long as it is called today so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin we need the encouragement we need the ministry and others need it from us so God I pray that that’s something that we as a church would be continually mindful of that we be constantly encouraging one another instructing restoring one another as the situations would need God so that we may all persevere by faith until your appearing thank you for this time amen amen

God Is Working in the Silence

In this sermon, David Capoccia examines the prophet Elijah’s descent into despair in 1 Kings 19 and how God ministered to Elijah and restored Elijah to service. The account not only demonstrates how God is working good even through difficult circumstances but also how believers can practically move from depressed doubt to obedient faith.

Let’s hear from the Word of the Lord this morning. Pray with me. Heavenly Father, we do indeed live by grace alone. It is only your unmerited favor that has saved us and we need it continually. We need the grace that also comes from the instruction of Your Word. So empower me now to speak it. Work in Your people to hear it and be changed by it. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

One of the most dangerous flying situations that a pilot can face is what’s known as a spin. It’s also called a tailspin, and it’s a situation in which the aircraft is stalling. This means there is no longer lift generated by the wings, so instead of flying it is falling. And in a spin, the aircraft is rotating as it moves towards the ground. It only takes a few moments for an airplane to enter a spin. The pilot can be fine flying high but if he makes a little turn, the plane is at an improper angle based on its speed and direction. Immediately the plan starts careening downwards.

You can imagine how frightening and disorienting the spin can be. I’ve watched a few videos of flight instructors demonstrating how to get in and out of a spin. Just watching it, I felt my heart being restrained. It was heart-wrenching to watch! You see how quickly a plane can go out of control. It’s so obvious from watching that if something decisive is not done quickly, that plane and everyone on it is going to crash and those inside will perish.

Thankfully there is a proven protocol for getting an airplane out of a spin, but the steps the a pilot needs to take are counterintuitive. You have to do the opposite of what you feel in order to successfully rescue the airplane. Have you ever felt like your life was caught in a spin. You were like a plane that was suddenly and wildly heading towards the ground. Maybe everything was going well for you and then suddenly there’s this severe and unexpected setback in your life. And you found yourself spiraling towards the earth.

Maybe you’ve been experiencing emergencies for a while and you’re amazed your plane is still in the air. You’ve lost one engine, your cabin has been depressurized, you’ve got the oxygen mask on and you’re trying to cling to the Lord and serve Him. But then something else goes wrong and you look down at your instruments and say that’s it, you can’t take anymore. And now you’re going down.

Our society has a term for this kind of feeling or mood, it’s depression. But I think a more Biblical term is hopelessness and despair. The world is filled with hopelessness because life is hard and people do not know the true God who is the only God of hope. But even believers, strong ones, can fall into hopelessness. It happens quickly and we even see this happening in the Scriptures. In fact this morning I would like us to take a look at one of those times when a believer experienced hopelessness and the restorative ministry of God Himself back to hope and obedience.

As we look at this account from the Scriptures, we’re going to find encouragement for our own encounters with hopelessness, and also become more equipped to help others who are struggling. Please take your Bibles and turn to 1 Kings 19. The title of the sermon today is, “God is Working in the Silence.” That is the main message and comfort of our passage. When we encounter despair and hopelessness, we need to remember that God is working in the silence.

We’re going to look at the entire section of 1 Kings 19. To appreciate what’s going on in this section of historical narrative, we need to know the context. We’ve gotten a little bit already from today’s Scripture reading. Wicked King Ahab is reigning in the northern kingdom along with his evil wife, Jezebel. These two have begun to propagate the worship of the Canaanite storm god, Baal. They try to replace Yahweh with Baal and many Israelites have gotten on board. They’ve abandoned Yahweh altogether or they tried to serve both Yahweh and Baal at the same time.

Meanwhile, the true prophets of God have been hunted down and killed by Jezebel, the wicked queen. But then Elijah comes on the scene seemingly out of nowhere. In 1 Kings 17 Elijah arrives and announces judgment from God on the two monarchs. He says it will not reign anymore in Israel until he says so.

Then begins a period of drought for the next three and half years. Elijah has to go on the run and God miraculously hides and provides for Elijah during those years while Israel suffers. Then in 1 Kings 18 which is what Greg read earlier, God sends Elijah back to Israel to confront Ahab and the false prophets of Baal. They engage in a little contest at Mount Carmel to see which God, either Yahweh or Baal is able to send fire, probably meaning lightning, from Heaven to consume a sacrifice.

The result of the contest is that Baal loses and Yahweh wins. Elijah proclaims and you heard this, that Yahweh has turned the heart of His people back. He has the people execute the false prophets of Baal and tells King Ahab to tell get ready for the rain to return because God is sending it back. Before the rainstorm comes, Elijah supernaturally outruns Ahab’s chariots 17 miles from Mount Carmel to Ahab’s winter capital in Jezreel.

These are some pretty dramatic events but what happens next? Our text 1 Kings 19 shows this. Rather than reading it all at once and going back, we’re going to read and analyze the sections as we go through. We can divide the passage into five sections and I’m going to give you five different headings as we move through. That’s how we’re going to organize our approach. The first section in this passage is 1 Kings 19:1-4. Read it with me:

Now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” And he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.”

What’s this first section? We can give it the heading, “Servant Despairs.” Notice in verse 1 that Ahab tells Jezebel what Elijah did at Carmel, that he killed all her prophets. In verse 2 we see that Jezebel sends Elijah a threatening message basically saying that may the gods punish her severely if she doesn’t kill Elijah like he killed the prophets. Now the fact that Jezebel sends a messenger rather than an assassin or an executioner is significant and suggests that she doesn’t really have the power to kill Elijah. Also, she is appealing to gods that Elijah knows are false so why be afraid of that?

Notice verse 3 which is Elijah’s response. It is fear that makes him run for his life all the way to Beersheba. Beersheba is all the way at the southern end of the kingdom of Judah. It’s as far away in the land of Israel as he can get from Jezebel. It’s right on the border of the wilderness. He doesn’t even feel safe in god-fearing Judah, which had a righteous king at this time.

He also dismissed his servant in verse 3. Elijah, don’t you need the help of your servant to do ministry? Well in verse 4, Elijah makes it quite clear the he never intends to return to prophetic ministry. He goes a day’s journey into the wilderness and remember when we hear wilderness in Israel we’re talking about a place that is very difficult to survive. The southern wilderness below Judah is a barren, rocky desert. He goes into this wilderness and sits down under a Juniper tree and asks for God to kill him.

Talk about a tailspin! Elijah, what happened to you? Is this the same man, the same prophet of God who just stood up against 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Ashura? What’s going on? We get a clue into Elijah’s mind when we hear him speak in verse 4. Notice what it says:

    “It is enough."

That is the short cry of resigned despair that we have all uttered at different times in your lives. We cry out and say we’ve had enough and have reached out limits. We can’t take it anymore and go on! And then he says to God secondly:

“Now, O Lord, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers.”

Have you ever been overwhelmed by the troubles in your life so much that you wanted to die? That’s what Elijah is feeling here. Now it is significant that he doesn’t actually attempt to kill himself and there are other righteous men in the Scriptures who similarly want to die but don’t try to kill themselves. That is not man’s right. Elijah is hoping that God will kill him.

Thirdly he says to God that he is not better than his fathers, he is not more righteous, not more able to deal with difficulty or produce change in Israel? In fact, to get a handle on the change that has taken place in Elijah’s mind, we have to keep in mind what he is saying in verse 4 and what has just taken place in 1 Kings 18. Why has Elijah turned from bold faith to fearful despair? It’s simple: dashed expectations.

You see, Elijah loves the Lord. He hates Baalism and he longs for his people to turn back to Yahweh. With the Mount of Carmel showdown, Elijah thought he was on the verge of revival. He said as much three and half years are coming to an end, and God turned His people back and brought the rain. Elijah runs excitedly to the capital in Jezreel and he is ready to advise Ahab and oversee the turning of this syncretistic nation into what it was supposed to be: a holy nation of priests.

What does Elijah find when he goes to Jezreel? Not the swell of support that he expected but instead apathy from the people, the king, and even worse he finds that the decisive defeat of Baal and his prophets at Carmel has not daunted Queen Jezebel at all! She’s as defiant as ever and though her ability to inflict vengeance seems to be temporarily limited, she is determined to see Baalism triumphant over Yahwehism in Israel.

So then to Elijah, all that effort, hope, ministry over the years where he faithfully sought the Lord’s work, it seemed like it was for nothing! He had nothing to show for it and nothing is changing. What is the point, God? Who can keep going when it’s all useless? God, please just kill me now, I’m not superhero and I can’t keep going when there is no hope for victory or relief. Has your heart ever said the same as Elijah’s?

Did you have some hope or expectation that you were longing for in your life, only to see it dashed maybe multiple times? Maybe you thought your spouse would change, but your spouse is as wicked as ever. Maybe you thought God would heal you from your illness but it’s only gotten worse. Maybe you thought God would use you to save your family and now they have disowned you.

Nothing is working out and nothing is changing! Where is God? If your heart has cried this way, then keep listening because has a Word to you this morning. We’ve seen in the first section that the servant despairs. But now God reenters the picture and helps the downcast. The next section in verses 5-8, God ministers. 1 King 19:5-8 says:

He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat.” Then he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you.” So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.

This next section of text gives us something very surprising. In Elijah’s doubting word of despair, we do not find a word of rebuke from God, nor do we find a word of comfort or destruction. Instead, we find the Lord Himself tenderly meeting Elijah’s needs. After all, Elijah is very distressed and no doubt was frantically running from Jezebel and physically, emotionally, spiritually exhausted.

So what does the Lord provide for Elijah? Food, drink, and sleep. Notice in verse 7 it identifies the ministering angel giving aid to Elijah here as the angel of Yahweh. If you’ve been with us in Sunday school before, that is a specific title. We know that the angel of Yahweh is Yahweh! When God sends an angel to Elijah, He is not just sending an angel but is coming down Himself to minister and meet Elijah’s needs.

What a God! Friends, do you realize that the same God who tenderly ministers to Elijah, is the God who if you’re in Christ, ministers to you? He cares for you in the same way even when you face despair. Twice, Elijah sleeps and eats and notice why specifically God urges him to eat in verse 7. God tells him that the journey is too great and he is going to need more sustenance for where he is going. Verse 8 says that Elijah goes with the strength of that food and drink for forty days and forty nights.

That phrase should should a little familiar. Where else have we seen a man of God go forty days and forty nights without eating and drinking? If you know your Old Testament, that should sound like Moses! Where was Moses going for forty days and nights? Mount Horeb, also known as Mount Sinai which is where Elijah is going.

Something important is about to go down at this ancient site of revelation to Moses and to Israel. It’s going to be a little different than when Moses went. That’s what we see next in our third section. We see the servant despairs, we see God ministers, and now we see God instructs. In 1 Kings 19:9-14 it says:

Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Then he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

In verse 9 we immediately start to discover more details that should remind us of Moses’ earlier encounter with Yahweh at this mountain. In Exodus 33:18, Moses requests to see the glory of Yahweh. God grants Moses his request but has to do it in a certain way. He hid Moses in the cleft of a rock, or a cave, and passed by. He was going to let Moses see his back and after hearing God describe His name, Moses bowed down. This is an amazing moment of revelation in the Old Testament.

We see a similar thing in our text. But notice what word comes to Elijah in verse 9: what are you doing here, Elijah? This question is a gentle rebuke to Elijah. God is telling him that He knows there is no good reason for him to be here when he is supposed to be back in Israel serving. Because this is framed in the form of a question, God does give Elijah the chance to explain himself and He is willing to listen to Elijah.

In verse 10, Elijah in reply gives a very depressing and mostly true report of the situation in Israel. He says that he has been zealous and faithful on God’s behalf but Israel has been stubborn and unfaithful to the prophets and have tried to kill them. Elijah says he is the only one left, which is not true. Elijah made the same claim at Carmel when he met with the prophet of Baal. But if you were paying attention in the beginning of 1 Kings 18, Obadiah said he hid another 100 prophets of Yahweh so Elijah is not the only one left. Perhaps he is the only publicly active prophet, or maybe he is just not being accurate here. Certainly he feels like he is the only one left. He feels very alone and if you’ve ever dealt with despair then you know that feeling.

We can sum up Elijah’s reply to God this way: “I’m here because the situation in Israel is hopeless.” He fought hard but the people are unmoved. They killed everyone else and surely he is next. So why go on fighting a doomed battle. Elijah wants a sign that it is worth it to take up the sword and shield again.

God gives Elijah a sign alright, but it’s probably not the one he expects. In 1 Kings 19:11, it says that God would give him a sign. At first it looks like Elijah is going to get the full Moses-Sinai revelation. There’s this succession of rock splitting, wind, earthquake, and fire. These were awesome and terrifying and very much similar to the kinds of phenomena that Israel experienced when they went to Sinai. There is one difference though. In Exodus 19:18 for instance, it says:

Yahweh descended upon Mount Sinai in fire.

Yahweh was present in the fire but what do we read here? Yahweh was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire. What comes after the fire and what is the only manifestation that doesn’t have the accompanying phrase that doesn’t have Yahweh in it. Our text reads that after the fire, there is the sound of a gentle blowing. This is one of the most intriguing statements in all the Bible and it’s translated different ways. The King James famously translates it as a still small voice. The ESV translates it as the sound of a low whisper and the NIV says it is a gentle whisper.

Why these differences in translation? Part of the reason is that the phrase itself doesn’t seem to make sense on its own. The sound or the voice of a thin silence is what this phrase really means. Silence is the absence of sound so what does it sound like? What is a thin silence and how is it different from regular silence. Translators do their best to understand this phrase but I think the mystery is actually part of the point.

You see, after all the clamor of the rock splitting wind, the earthquake and the blaze, what comes next for Elijah is something so extraordinary: a silent thin sound. One translator put it as a vibrant silence. Out of all these phenomena, which of these actually manifested the Lord’s presence? It was the last one, the silence and Elijah himself realizes this. In verse 13, it is when he hears this silence that he wraps his face in the cloak and goes out to the entrance of the cave to see Yahweh passing by.

Do you see the implications of this for Elijah? Despairing Elijah has come all the way to Sinai because he doesn’t see Yahweh at work in Israel or in his life. Elijah wants to see some dramatic action and Sinai fire in Israel. But God shows Elijah that He can bend Heaven and Earth to His will in dramatic fashion but that is not the way He choose to work right now. Don’t think that just because you can’t see or her anything, God is absent. He is there even in the silence.

This is the great object lesson that God was showing Elijah at Sinai. Do you see that this same truth applies to God’s people today? Whenever you think that God has abandoned you or is no longer acting faithfully on your behalf, you need to realize that God is actually there working in your situation and in the silence unseen and unheard. He brings about His perfect will for your life. He never stops working for His own sake and His people’s sake. Sometimes His work is obvious, loud, dramatic, but other times it is quiet and imperceptible, even silent.

This was the instruction God was giving to Elijah, but did he understand it? Apparently not because in verse 13 when God asks him what he is doing at the mountain, notice that Elijah gives the exact same dejected response as before. Elijah didn’t get it and missed the object lesson. He goes back to his prepared speech for why there is no hope in this situation.

God graciously, patiently comes at the issue from another angle and this takes us to our next session. The fourth section is 1 Kings 19:15-18, where we see God’s commissions. It says:

The Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram; and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. It shall come about, the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death. Yet I will leave 7,000 in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

Notice here that God gives Elijah a new task and direction. God tells Elijah to go back through the wilderness the way he came and start heading towards Damascus in Syria. God then tells Elijah that he is to work to anoint three individuals: Hazael, king over Aram or Syria, Jehu, king over Israel, and Elisha as the prophet to succeed Elijah.

Notice that these anointing represent pretty dramatic geo-political changes. There are totally new kings in these nations. And notice the purpose revealed by God that are connected with these anointing in verse 17. God reveals that these three will work together to put certain fugitives to the sword, as to death. Whoever escapes from one man, the other two will make sure that they destroy the fugitives.

What fugitives does God have in mind? Well, remember that Elijah has been complaining to God that He is not doing anything about the Baal problem in Israel. Verse 18 also has Baal worship as its subject. So the fugitives that God must have in mind here has to do with coming judgment on Baalism in Israel. God is saying that it’s not true He is not doing anything about the heinous false worship among His people. He is doing something, in fact Elijah has an important part to play in it! He is to go and anoint these men that God will use to punish unfaithful Israelites. He also will use these men to destroy state-sponsored Baal worship in Israel.

Notice though, that in verse 18 God clarifies that not everyone will need to be judged in Israel. God says that there are 7,000 who have not bowed and whose lips have not kissed any statue of Baal in worship. Notice the way God phases it. It doesn’t say there are, but God will leave 7,000. Why is that phrase significant? Because it emphasizes God’s total sovereignty. He is in control, even of the hearts and salvation of men. God is telling Elijah that big changes are coming and judgment is coming. But also, preservation of the faithful remnant is coming. This is a remnant that God will uphold and cause to be faithful.

Why would these facts be signifiant to Elijah? Well they reveal that God is active and has taken notice of the situation. Second, they reveal that Elijah’s zeal for the Lord is not in vain. Elijah had been given an important role in bringing about God’s will and he needs to do it. Third, it shows that Elijah was never truly alone. He thought and even insisted that he was the last faithful Yahweh worshiper in Israel. God reveals that he is not the only one but there are others like him. God will cause them to stand and Elijah to stand. Therefore, He tells Elijah to return to the ministry for His sake and the sake of the people.

Really what we’re seeing here in this commission is a more direct explanation of the object lesson that God was giving to Elijah before. Elijah can’t see it yet, but God is at work. What is so striking about this commission of anointing these men given by God to Elijah is that Elijah will not be on the earth to see these things unfold. If you keep going in the record of the books of Kings, you’ll see that everything God promises here does come to pass but largely without Elijah’s involvement. It’s Elisha who anoints Hazael, king of Syria in 2 Kings 8. And it’s an unnamed prophetic assistant who anoints Jehu, king over Israel in 2 Kings 9.

So does this that Elijah proved derelict in his duties as a prophet? That he never really turned to faithful ministry because others had to jump in for his unfaithfulness. I don’t think we can say that. If we keep following Elijah in the book of Kings, God keeps affirming and using him. How does Elijah die? He doesn’t! He is taken by a chariot of fire into Heaven! I can’t think of a much more glorious exit for a man on the Earth than that!

This was no prophet under God’s disapproval. No, Elijah was being faithful. But what’s going on here is Elijah was never intended to fully accomplish his commission by himself. He was setting the wheels in motion but it was going to have effects that far outlasted him. Others would literally have to take up the mantel of Elijah to finish the calling given to him. To say it in another way, Elijah’s important work given specifically to him by God was part of a multi-generational plan.

Elijah would not be on the Earth to see God’s great plan come to its dramatic conclusion. Nevertheless, he had a critical part to play. Do you see the implications for us? Brothers and sisters, you will and you already have encounter moments where it looks like God is silent. Where great changes seem necessary for your life and for our world, you don’t see anything happening but take courage from God’s commission given to Elijah here. You too have important work to accomplish from the Lord. You have a calling to fulfill! But this work may not manifest its good outcome for a year, five years, fifty years, or maybe until after you’re gone!

We often get so micro focused on our struggles but we also need to take a step back and realize that this is part of a larger plan, a great and glorious plan, that we can’t see the end of yet. God doesn’t have to reveal to us how what He is doing fits into that plan. But what we have to do is trust the Lord, that He is working out His good purpose for us and through us. And we need to get back to fulfilling His calling to us. We gotta trust the Lord and we have to get back into the battle and back to work! Now how does Elijah respond to this new commission from God? We see it in our last section. This is the beginning of his response in 1 Kings 19:19-21 where we see that God’s servant obeys. It says:

So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him. He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Please let me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.

We see in this last section that Elijah gets right to work with part of his new commission from God. Elijah seeks out Elisha in his village in Israel. He marks out Elisha as the one who would succeed after him but would Elisha actually follow Elijah? So many in Israel are just seeking the Baals? What are the chances that this random Israelite will embrace a life of dangerous ministry on behalf of Yahweh?

Notice Elisha’s response to the ministry in verse 20. He begs that he might have leave to say goodbye to his family. Uh oh, what’s going on here? Is this a sign of hesitation and repudiation of this calling from God? You might be thinking of Jesus’ own experience in the New Testament with some of His would-be disciples. One of them says that he wants to say goodbye to his parents and Jesus says the person who looks back is not worthy to plow the field.

Is that what is going on with Elisha here? Perhaps Elijah does not know and that is why he says what he does to Elijah. He says that Elisha is free to go back and can choose what he wants to do. But Elisha doesn’t shirk the calling. On the contrary, Elisha takes the oxen he was just plowing with along with the yoking equipment and he prepares a final meal for his family and the people around him. This commemorates Elisha’s entering Yahweh’s prophetic service.

In other words, Elisha’s totally giving up on his old life to follow Yahweh and to serve Elijah. You think these events were encouraging to Elijah? They sure were! And God assuredly meant them to do so. Not only does Elijah see the Lord’s word come to pass, but Elijah gains a faithful fellow minister and friend in the Lord. This is someone who was just as zealous for Yahweh as he was. Just at the beginning, Elijah can see that even after he is gone the prophet that succeeds will remain faithful to Yahweh. That would be encouraging.

Brothers and sisters, we will experience similar blessing and encouragement when we step away from despair and step back into faith-filled obedience to Yahweh. Yes, it will be hard at first to let go of that despairing attitude, woe is me and that sense of inadequacy and self-pity. But as we proceed into the work of the Lord, not according to our own strength but according to God’s we will do it. Elijah couldn’t handle it but God was the One sending him. We will see the goodness of God again! God still has it out there for us. One of the chief ways we see it is in the brothers and sisters who serve alongside us. You won’t see it if you never return to the ministry.

For his part, Elijah does go on to faithful ministry, even though we can’t trace it right now. He goes back and sees many more times of God working dramatically, powerfully, and faithfully in Israel. But he needed this time of reorientation from God away from his spiraling despair. Perhaps you need the same. Do you realize that this passage that we have just looked at has been provided by God to you today to help you in your encounters with despair? This is also to help you help others when they are facing despair.

Actually, the truths that we have seen in this section form a pretty good application outline for dealing with despair. Let me show you. If we just go through the five points again, we’ll see it. Number one, “The servant despairs.” All of God’s servants will face temptation to discouragement and despair. If you haven’t, you will! We respond with number two, “God ministers.” God ministers to us in our despair, even in the simple goodness of creation and meeting our physical needs. Number three, “God instructs.” God also instructs that when we think that God is silent we need to remember that not only is He there in the silence but He is working for our good and for His glory. Number four, “God commissions.” In light of those truths, God commissions us to fulfill our meaningful calling by faith. The work is too much for us but not too much for God. Number five, “The servant obeys.” When we return in obedience to the work of the Lord, He will vindicate our faith and bless us with encouragement especially via our fellow soldiers in Christ.

You know I mentioned in the beginning that the basic recovery protocol for an aircraft and a spin is a little bit counterintuitive. For instance when you’re going down and spinning, you might think that you have to pull the nose up. But actually you shouldn’t do that. Initially when you’re trying to reorient your aircraft, you actually need to point the nose down so that the plane can stabilize. It’s not what you would expect to do, but it’s what you need to do. It’s similar when it comes to dealing with despair. Some of these things I just mentioned to you are just the opposite of what you feel like you should do in that situation.

Hopelessness has a way of grabbing hold of you and trying to pull you away from everything you really need. You might not feel like being with God’s people and experiencing the good of God’s creation or hear any of God’s Word. Ultimately you may not want God anymore. But those are all the things you actually need! Therefore, brothers and sisters please here me in this. To escape despair, to come back to safe spiritual flight so to speak, you’re going to have to go against what your flesh is telling you to do. You’re going to have to go against those despairing feelings and proceed by faith in the Lord.

When you do, you will experience an outcome just like Elijah here. You’ll be brought back to that safe flight and you’ll have the joy of the Lord again. Now for those of you are facing despair but don’t know the Lord Jesus Christ, you need to come to know Him today.

You’re in this account too but you’re not Elijah! You’re the people serving Baal in Israel. They had a false hope which was clearly shown to be false. Baal couldn’t send the rain or fire. He was exposed as utterly useless. Whatever you are trusting in that is not God, it will be exposed as utterly useless. Whether it’s a false god or yourself, you will realize that it doesn’t have power and life’s calamities are going to show this to you.

What are you going to do what that happens? Even more serious, God as your Creator deserves your worship, service, and trust. Because you’re not willing to give that to Him but instead reserve it to yourself or give it to another idol, God is angry. Just as He was angry with the Baal worshipers in Israel. He will, in holy judgment, act against you. You may not see it or think it’s going to happen, but don’t forget that God is working in the silence. If you know Christ, He is working for your good. But if you don’t know Christ, He is working for your judgment.

The judgment is not asleep and it will soon overtake you as it did the unfaithful persons in Israel and there will be no recourse at that time. That’s why you must turn to the only Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the only God and the only hope! Only His life, death, resurrection, and amazing salvation work accomplished at the cross is your way of rescue.

That is the only way of rescue from sin, death, and the wrath of God. On top of all that, without Christ you face the difficulties of life without any help. You need the Lord Jesus Christ, not only for your eternal salvation but to have any real hope in this life. That can be yours today but you must return in repentance in faith and give up your sin and your old way. You say that you’re not the Lord of your life anymore, and you must trust in God and give your life as His. There is no way that you can make yourself to Him and it is only Jesus Christ who brings you to God and reconciles you. It is not good works, riches, but only Christ.

If you will repent and believe, you have a sure hope even today. This is not a hope that we often talk about. Pastor Babij does a good job of clarifying this too. This is not that you hope things will work out. This is that you know things will work out because God is faithful. You know before Jesus ascended back into Heaven, He gathered up His disciples on that one mountain in Galilee and He told them that all authority on Heaven and Earth has been given to Him. He gives the commission to go out and make disciples and baptize them in His Name. Then He gives a comfort for behold He says, “I am with you even to the end of the age.”

That’s another version of what we just saw in our text today. Our Lord and God is with us, even in the silence. It’s for that reason that we can have peace and joy no matter what we’re going through. That’s a great comfort and I hope that you have it.

Let’s pray. Lord God, we thank You for Your Word. You are indeed the only hope. You’re the only hope of eternal life and the only true hope for this life now. But I pray that everyone listening today would know Your hope in an intimate and saving way and they would not trust in false hopes. Lord, for those facing despair I pray that You would be so gracious as to cause them to act in faith. That they would go against what their flesh is telling them to do and instead trust Yahweh again. He is doing something here even though we can’t see what it is. It is for your good and His glory. I pray that anyone who is facing despair that they will remember that truth and that You will rescue them. Lord, we thank You for this passage and this time in Your Word today. Make it effective. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Elijah Defeats the Prophets of Baal

Answers Bible Curriculum Year 2 Quarter 2 Lesson 11

In this lesson, David Capoccia examines Elijah’s confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel. David Capoccia first looks at the context of the confrontation at Carmel, then the contest at Carmel, and then the application of the account of Carmel. This section of Scripture vividly exposes the uselessness of revering or serving any false god, physical statue, or idol of the heart.

to align to though let’s recap what we said about Jonah last week at least a little bit of what we said why did Jonah disobey God’s call came down to ya Joe he didn’t want to go to Nineveh true but is he just lazy or why didn’t you want to go yes Steve oh yeah he’s prejudiced he I think we can beam strong in that he hates the Ninevites he hates them so much he would rather not risk the possibility that God would show kindness event you might have relished the idea of pronouncing judgment on them but he knew God’s heart and he didn’t want at any cost to see God relents of judgment to the Ninevites now how did Jonah survive in the great fish it was miraculous remember there’s no way as we can understand for a human to survive inside of a whale or fish so it had to be miraculous preservation now when God’s dealings with Jonah which attributes did God demonstrate clearly demonstrates compassion he does not give to Jonah what Jonah deserves during a disobedient a prophet event out of all people should have been obedient to the Lord but God is gracious to him and he’s completely sovereign and powerful he can orchestrate the storm the casting of lots of fish miraculous preservation he does all of these things he demonstrates his total power when Jonah goes to Nineveh dough and actually preaches what even greater miracle takes place exactly all of the people repent from the greatest to the least of them everyone repents this this Gentile City the greatest city in the Middle East at this time they all repent and God therefore relents at the judgment now we didn’t mention this last week we’re just as an aside remember this is not God demonstrating inconstancy God declares that he never changes he never changes his mind didn’t you change your mind if you said you were going to judge and in it and then you didn’t Oh God for ordained all of these actions even his own responses and he was acting completely consistent with this character he is a God who is angry with the evil and proud always but he’s always kind to the repentant and humble and God’s response to Nineveh was completely consistent with that character he’s consistent with his holiness and consistent with his compassion but Jonah is angry with God’s response why was Jonah’s anger hypocritical yes d right he accepted God’s mercy he experienced God’s compassion they didn’t want to see gone do that to other people this particular people group besides God’s demonstrating his great compassion and power in the Book of Jonah why else was the book of jonah written yes d that’s true it has some messianic implications the sign of Jonah is something that Jesus is going to refer to for himself but there’s that’s it’s good that you say that because that points us to another aspect of the Book of Jonah that even Jesus brings out you’re going to say something wrong I think so some have pointed out that Jonah is some ways almost symbolic of Israel that he didn’t want us to share the good news with Nineveh just as Israel never really sought to be a witness to the other nations it was just trying to reap the blessings for itself but keying on earth even going further with the idea of Israel remember that the Book of Jonah is a work of contrast Nineveh the greatest city of the Gentiles the most wicked city of the Gentiles repents that the preaching of one prejudiced half-hearted preacher but Israel will not repent even though all these preachers and even though they’re God’s people are coming or all these features are coming to them again again so it is a as an exposure Israel’s wickedness by way of contrast to the Vice Israel stubbornness Israel’s hard-heartedness issue had far more reason to repent and follow God but they would not in Nineveh had seemingly small reason to repent from human perspective and they do now there was a question last week I heard after class about whether such a rebuke via the Book of Jonah is truly fair if salvation is only possible by the Lord spirit as we know then how can God get condemn Israel for not believing true Nineveh had less reason to repent but they only repented because God moved them to repentance if God didn’t grant repentance to Israel then how can God find fault with Israel ah this is the classic misunderstanding of God’s sovereignty that nullifies man’s responsibility without spending a whole Sunday School lesson on it let me just try and sum up the answer quickly man is responsible to believe in and obey God yes every reason to do so and any kind of blessing or extra revelation at man receives makes him even more culpable but man by his own choice will not ever believe or obey God he is a man is bent toward rebellion God does not force man’s choice on this issue man brings upon himself his own deserved punishment man reaps what he sews this was true of Adam and it’s true of us his descendants as pastor taught recently it is therefore impossible for any man to be saved unless God intervenes unless God makes the person choose differently than he would naturally and this is what God does in salvation he intervenes he opens a man’s eyes he gives the man faith he makes the man alive by the Holy Spirit so that the man cannot help but choose God be save and experience God’s blessing now God’s refusal to intervene for all is not blameworthy you say well if you interview for some why don’t you intervene for all isn’t that not fair God does not need to save any you don’t have to intervene for any person the fact that any are all any at all are saved is an extremely surprising mercy therefore for those who are damned the responsibility in shame is entirely their own they chose it they reap the consequences of it but for those who are saved the responsibility and glory is entirely God’s because God chose it God accomplished it God made it come to pass now you weak you can try and say but what logically doesn’t this make gone responsible or doesn’t this make man irresponsible the Bible doesn’t let you do that the bible does not let you argue otherwise it states explicitly God does not force people to sin and by extension God does not force people to go to hell God allows evil for his own purposes but he categorically is not the author of evil or injustice of any sort this is part of what makes salvation so wondrous we could never have deserved it or even expected it it was a big merciful surprise we would have justly perished like the rest but God amazingly showed his loving kindness to us back to Israel even though we know Israel would never have turned to God without God’s intervention it is nonetheless true that Israel should have turned to God they had every reason to do so and the fact that they did not is even more blame worthy than those who had never experienced that special relationship to God or heard God special revelation questions about that or about what we talked about regarding Jonah last week yes yeah that’s good comment Steve there’s just something a little bit or repeat a little bit where you’re saying the the account of Jonah and even these understandings of God’s sovereignty and salvation they really emphasize the mercy of God the great compassion of God and it is something for us to imitate it is not something for us to be hypocritical about and even with this situation with the shooting in a gay nightclub of an Orlando this is another instance where we should be thinking about having an attitude of mercy and extending mercy because it has been extended to us and I also think about anytime you see a tragedy or natural disaster or something like that it’s always good to go back to the words of Jesus or the when he talks about the tower that fell on certain people or those who were killed when they were offering sacrifices he says you think they were more evil than you I’ll tell you no but unless you perish for unless you repent you will likewise perish so it’s not this oh they were you know they were homosexual they were they were living a gay lifestyle that’s why it happens them we’re all evil we all deserve to have that kind of thing happen to us there’s no reason necessarily that it happened to one and not the other we need to be we need to learn the lesson how we need to get right with God because the same thing could happen to us other questions or comments ok well the account of Jonah takes place in the middle of the divided Kingdom period under Jeroboam the second but we’re going to back up some years now and consider an earlier prophet Elijah Elijah was a fascinating individual unique in many respects it was a powerful servant of God and yet he was just a man he affected some of the most momentous miracles in the Old Testament including raising a person from the dead he was bold for the Lord and declared as a prophet must that the Israelites of the Northern Kingdom that’s where he ministered they must repent and serve God Elijah you may remember also is unique and that he never died but he ascended to heaven how in a chariot of fire but Elijah was also a week and failing profit in the book of Kings we see him express both loneliness and despair like Jonah Elijah at times asked for God to kill him because Elijah feels like allied is the only God fever left in Israel he’s always on the run from people who want to kill him and it feels like he’s not strong enough to keep standing for the Lord but God did sustain Elijah and even use this at times failing profit in a powerful way of course that there are parallels for us there we can’t look at elijah’s whole prophetic ministry but we are going to look at a few things today here’s our outline we’re going to focus on the accounts of Elijah at Mount Carmel but first looking at the historical context the historical situation of that moment in Elijah’s ministry then we’ll take a look at the contest itself between God and bail at Carmel and then we’ll finish by considering application from this momentous event let’s pray before we go on father I pray that your greatness to be on display in this class that you’d help me to be able to explain clearly and hopefully what your word says and that we would grow and understanding and love and fear god of you as the as the one great God and then Jesus name Amen let’s start by examining the context of the caramel debacle please open your Bibles to first Kings chapter 17 if you’re using the Bible’s in the pews this is on page 372 1st Kings 17 not going to read this whole chapter but I will make reference to a couple of the verses in it by the way I’m going to try and use the laser pointer function so that’s showing it and kind of see it nice as I said we’re in the divided Kingdom period around 900 BC about 100 years before Jonah’s ministry at this time the infamous a hab is king of israel remember Israel being the Northern Kingdom do you roam the first that was the first king of the first king of Israel was pretty evil but a hat was even more wicked one evil act of Ahab was his marriage may have married a Phoenician princess Jezebel and made her queen of Israel phoenicia by the way I think you can see it on the map and the top middle is the area that included the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon is the northwest of Israel modern Lebanon Jezebel is from Phoenicia and he brings she brings into Israel the worship of Vail now you remember bail bail was sometimes a sometimes the bales is just a generic term for all the gods of the nations but Bale specifically usually refers to a particular god this is the he had a regional variants but this is the chief of the gods of the Canaanites and of the Phoenicians some regard to him as the god of the Sun but most worshipers viewed him as the god of storms he had power over due rainfall lightning very similar to Zeus of the Greeks and Marv Duke of the Babylonians because this impact on crops he’s also associated with fertility now Israel is reason very dependent on rainfall so very quickly bail this bail becomes popular now enter Elijah chapter 17 verse 1 introduces Elijah as Elijah has a message from God to the king of Israel look at verse 1 of chapter 17 now Elijah the Tishbite who is of the setters settlers of Gilead said to Ahab as the Lord the God of Israel lives before whom I stand surely there shall be neither do nor rain these years except by my word and we can notice a few things from the dust that’s one statement first of all Elijah is called a Tishbite that just means he’s from the town of tisch p not exactly sure where that was but it was he said also to be from Gilead should be the northeast area of Israel where my little pointer is now that would be the region of Gilead tishman must be somewhere in that area now notice his proclamation of judgment no rain or Dew in israel until Elijah says so why is this appointed judgment are those random judgments no it’s very purposeful right y-yeah duty exactly that is that is precisely the area that their false god this new God that is get becoming popular in Israel is supposed to rule over he’s supposed to bring the do he’s supposed to bring the rain and God says because you’ve turned to the god of the sky the goddess supposed to give you doin rain I’m going to not have any do I rain in your in your area until I say so this is a very purposeful judgment now after this the Lord instructs Elijah to flee already Elijah is on the run he is constantly on the run I think if it was kind of like a running prophet he has to flee and they first he hides at the book careth in Gilead so he’s going back to this northeast section yeah he’s miraculously provided for there but as the drought oh okay good as the drought continues to Brooke dries up and God directs him to another place to a city called Zarephath you’ve probably heard of that but where is Arafat I look at verses 8 to 9 of chapter 17 then the word of the Lord came to him saying arise go to Zarephath which belongs to Sidon and stay there and behold behold I’ve commanded a widow there to provide for you zarephath is in Sidon or in other words what Kingdom phoenicia so remember phoenicia is right up here you can see Zarephath would be in between tyre and Sidon about where my pointers and God sends Elijah to a widow in Zarephath but not just any widow look down to verse 12 at this point Elijah has asked the widow for some food and water no sir response but she said as the Lord your God lives I have no bread only a handful of flour in the bowl in a little oil in the jar and behold I am gathering a few sticks that I may go in and prepare for me and my son that we may eat it and die all right this is a pretty this is very informative statement from this Widow what do we learn about her she’s poor she’s clearly poor and connected with that I think we can also say the famine produced by the drought is indeed severe she is almost no food and you can see how poverty and having no food fit together with no rain there are little to no crop yields which means by the law of supply and demand the price of food goes way up a poor Widow ko no longer afford to buy food to live and there’s no welfare a handout system and no crops to glean even if that were allowed in the area so she’s doomed she’s poor the famine is severe but we also learned something else about her she knows about God and seems to have some fear of him because notice her first name it she says as the Lord your God lives she’s making an oath a by Yahweh now should I say your God I don’t know if we can read too much into that but she doesn’t necessarily know too much about Elijah and yet she’s already swearing by Yahweh she has some fear maybe even faith in Yahweh and were what happens right after this is that Elijah tells her to do something that would be kind of scary to do he says oh give me the food that you have and don’t worry you won’t run out and she believes him she obeys she had spate so I think we’re looking at somebody here who actually is a believer in Yahweh and exercises through faith so what we see here is the same sad irony that we saw with Jonah Israel is persisting in idolatry turning after bail meanwhile the place where bail comes from Phoenicia has a widow who’s turning two and remaining faithful to yahweh this is a persistent theme in the divided Kingdom period and among the prophets hard-hearted Israel will not turn to God but pagan Gentiles all of them but some of them do turn to God and even though they have far less reason to do so as with Jonah Jesus again points out this idea and makes a parallel to his own day if you don’t mind turn real quick to Luke chapter 4 keep your finger in first kings but Luke chapter 4 Jesus is in his hometown and he says some pretty interesting words Luke 4 verses 23 to 27 page 2024 in the pew Bibles Luke chapter 4 verse 23 and he said to them no doubt you will quote this proverb to me physician heal yourself whatever we heard was done at Capernaum do here in your hometown as well and he said truly I say to you no prophet is welcome in his hometown but I say to you in truth there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was shut up for three years and six months when a great famine came over all the land and in yet Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath and the land of Sidon to a woman who was a widow and there were many lepers in Israel on the time of Elisha the Prophet and none of them was cleansed but only name and the Syrian hopefully you can appreciate Jesus’s point here he is saying what I was just saying hard-hearted Israel consistently rejects God’s prophets well pagan Gentiles believed and they get to experience God’s mercy and blessing Jesus by saying no prophet has honor in his own town you’re going to be quoting certain profit proverbs to me he foretells that they will do the exact same thing to him and his message by the way what’s the crowd’s reaction Jesus’s words they try to kill him they get his point he’s shaming them he’s saying your heart hardened you won’t listen to God’s message but the pagans will the Gentiles will and they don’t like that and they try and kill Jesus but it’s not his time they can’t do it and Jesus leaves by the way how long does Jesus say the famine in Elijah’s day lasted three and a half years now that is a mega droughts and that’s going to result in severe famine can you imagine three and a half years with zero rain and no do there’s no water anywhere in Israel and probably in the surrounding regions Israel must have been a dry and dusty wasteland severe food shortages people are probably trying to import food as best they can consuming the livestock that they raised but there are still many starving people many starving animals it’s a total catastrophe but why did this happen because they turn to bail and because they turn to false gods Oh a habbo Israel why do you persist in your stubborn idolatry three and a half years as bail truly served you well we shall not subject yourself to the true God who actually does have power over rainfall but Israel and its King do not repent meanwhile God miraculously provides for this Phoenician widow and Elijah His Prophet until God is ready to visit Israel again in an act of undeserved compassion let’s actually see what God does we’ve looked at the background the context of caramel now let’s look at the episode of caramel itself back to 1st Kings back to first Kings chapter 18 now page 3 73 in the pew Bibles this is going to be our main passage today we’re going to look at the whole thing it’s 46 vs. so bear with me as I read it follow along now what happened after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year saying go show yourself to a hat and i will send rain on the face of the earth so aligned to win to show himself day hab now the famine was too veer in some vit in Samaria a hab called Obadiah who was over the household now Obadiah feared the Lord gravely from a Jezebel destroyed the prophets of the Lord Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by 50s in a cave and provided them with bread and water then a ham said to Obadiah go through the land to all the springs of water into all the valleys perhaps we will find grass and keep the horses and mules alive and not have to kill some of the cattle so they divided the land between them to survey it a hab went one way by himself and Obadiah went another way by himself nows Obadiah was on the way behold imagine met him and he recognized him and fell on his face and said is this you Elijah my master he said to him it is I go say to your master behold Elijah is here he said what’s Sinha by committed that you were giving your servant into the hand of Ahab to put me to death as the Lord your God lives there was no nation or Kingdom where my master has not sent to search for you and when they said he is not here he made the kingdom or nation swear that they could not find you and now you were saying go say to your master behold Elijah is here will come about when i leave you that the spirit of the lord will carry you where i do not know so so when i come until a hab and you cannot find you you will kill me although I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth has not been told to my master what I did when Jezebel killed the province of the Lord that I hid or that I hit a hundred prophets of the Lord by 50s in a cave and provided them with bread and water and now you’re saying goes lady or master behold Elijah is here he will then kill me hell I just said as the Lord of hosts lives before whom I stand I will surely show myself to him today so but I went to me they haven’t told him and they have went to meet Elijah when they have saw Elijah Ahab said to him is this you you trouble ER of Israel he said I have not troubled Israel but you and your father’s house have because you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and you have followed the bales now then send and gathered to me all Israel at Mount Carmel together with 450 prophets of bail and 400 prophets of the ashram who eat at Jezebel’s table so Ahab send a message among all the sons of Israel and brought the prophets together out at Mount Carmel Elijah came near to all the people and said how long will you hesitate between two opinions if the Lord is God follow him but if they’ll follow him but the people did not answer him a word then Elijah said to the people I alone am less the prophet of the Lord but bales profits are four hundred and fifty men now let them give us two oxen and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up and place it on the wood but put no fire under it and I will prepare the other rocks and lay it on the wood and I will not put a fire under it then you call in the name of your God and I will call on the name of the Lord a name of the Lord and the God who answers by fire He is God and all of people said that is a good idea so Elijah said to the Prophet the bail choose one ox for yourselves and prepare first for you are many and call in the name of your God but put no fire under it and they took the ox which was given them and they prepared it and called on the name of bail from morning until noon saying oh bail answer us but there was no voice and no one answered and they leapt about the altar which they made it came about at noon that Elijah mocked him and said call out with a loud voice for he is a god either he is occupied or gone aside or was on a journey perhaps he is asleep it needs to be awakened so they cried with a loud voice and cut themselves according to their custom with swords and Lance’s until the blood gushed out on them when midday was passed they raved until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice but there is no voice no one answered and no one paid attention then Elijah said to all people come near to me so all the people came near to him and he repaired the altar of the Lord which had been torn down Elijah took 12 stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob to whom the word of the Lord had come saying Israel shall be your name so with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two measures of seed many arranged the wood and cut the oxen pieces and laid it on the wood and he said Phil four pitchers with water and poured on the burnt offering and on the wood and he said do it a second time and they did it a second time and he do it a third time and I did it a third time the water flowed around the altar and he also filled the trench with water at the time of the offering of evening sacrifice Elijah the Prophet came here and said Oh Lord the God of Abraham Isaac and Israel today let it be known that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant I have done all these things at your word answer me O Lord answer me that this people may know that you o Lord our God and that you have turned their heart back again then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust and licked up the water that was in the trench when all the people saw it they fell on their faces and they said the Lord he is God the Lord he is God then Elijah said to them sees the prophets of bail do not let one of them escape so they seized them and Elijah brought them down to the brook kishan and slew them there now Elijah said a ham go up you can drink for there is the sound of the roar of a heavy shower so I have went up the in drink but Elijah went up to the top of Carmel and he crouched down on the earth and put his face between his knees said to his servant go up now look toward the sea so he went up and looked and said there’s nothing and he said go back seven times and it came about at the seven time that he said behold the cloud as small as a man’s hand is coming up from the sea and he said go up say they had prepare your chariot and go down so that the heavy shower does not stop you in a little while the sky grew black with clouds and wind and there was a heavy shower and Ahab road and went to jen’s real then the hand of the Lord is on Elijah and he girded up his loins and outran a half two Jezreel pretty amazing amazing that this actually happened that this is history but it’s been reported for our instruction so let’s study it will start with basic observations God tells Elijah to show himself a hab afterward what does God promised to do i will send rain not i will think about sending main i will send rains God reigned is an Elijah with a hat via this man Obadiah Obadiah is a righteous man what is oh but I had done without the Kings knowledge he hid a hundred prophets of Yahweh and provided food and water for them now why did they need to be hidden Jezebel was executing God’s prophets there was a definite need Elijah tells Obadiah to tell a hab that Elijah wants to see him but Obadiah hesitates why what’s a Obadiah sphere yeah great oh yeah that God might hide Elijah that God might carry Elijah way yeah he says we’ve been looking everywhere for you a hat acenta foreign nations looking for you and now you tell me to go tell am I found you God might take you away and then Ahab’s gonna kill me he’s gonna be so angry that he’s going to kill me but Elijah reassures Obadiah and by the way we’re getting a picture of the character of the two rulers of Israel at this time Jezebel and Ahab very very wicked but Elijah does me what they have what does they have call Elijah trouble ER of Israel you trouble ER of Israel Allied attorneys the phrase around I’m not troubled Israel but you and your fathers have and how have they done so according to Elijah sit that’s right by turning to bail and by forsaking the commandments of the Lord he says you are the trouble of Israel then illogic commands they have to assemble the people of Israel and 450 prophets the bail and 400 prophets of the Asherah at mount carmel and we called the Astra is a term that refers to a wooden tree like image or pole probably shape to depict a goddess ashra likely depicted ashed or wrath the principal female deity of the Canaanites and the Phoenicians goddess of love sex tility and war bail and asteroth were the two main deities of the Phoenicians so it makes sense that these deities would become principal deities in Israel with the inauguration provided by the Queen from Phoenicia the princess of Phoenicia Jezebel so he says bring both of those groups of prophets notice also that it says the prophets of bail and Ashford eat at Jezebel’s table Jezebel is directly honoring and supporting these prophets Elijah orders these 850 prophets come to Carmel where is caramel well i provided a map for you carmel mountain range is on the northwest section of israel so where my pointer is now mount carmel be right around here so this is not too far from where phoenicia is if we just go a little bit north we would find this is where tyre and sidon are so pretty close to Phoenicia and very close to the coast now the people visual gathered a caramel Elijah asked them to make a decision what’s what decision decide today which God are going to follow God or bail this may remind you of another episode in Israel’s history where else have we heard a man of God tell the people to choose between God and other gods Joshua right Joshua 20 enemas life choose this day whom you will serve as for me and my house we will serve the Lord that’s where that verse comes from don’t vastly any longer between two opinions you can’t serve God and bail choose one or the other during the time of Josh would the people affirmed that they would follow yahweh but here nobody answers Elijah now Elijah proclaims himself at Carmel you can say something George ok so now Elijah proclaims himself at Carmel to be the only prophet left of God this true no we already heard earlier in the passage of their 100 other prophets that were hit by Obadiah not quite sure why he says that this is a strange insistence of Elijah that he even repeats to the Lord later maybe he’s just saying this because in this instance he’s the only prophet not there are 450 prophets the bail I’m the only prophet of the Lord he here or maybe he just felt alone technically true yes there were other prophets but he felt like he was the only one left now that caramel Elijah tells the people that they’re going to prove once and for all which God has gone and it’s going to happen with a test but with Elijah and the prophets of bail will arrange sacrifices on altars but what will be missing from these sacrifices fire there will be no fire and you need fire to present a sacrifice it needs to burn it will be then the God who answers his worshipers with fire from heaven to burn the sacrifice will prove himself to be the real God people liked the idea so the contest is on by the way why is fire from heaven an appropriate test for bail he’s the god of storms he’s the god in control of the heavens fire from heaven should be his wheelhouse in his wheelhouse it’s appropriate for him it’s even possible that fire from heaven may actually refer to lightning I mean that’s exactly what he’s supposed to preside over remember they don’t have a concept of electricity so what is lightning well its a bright flashing fire so perhaps the idea of fire from heaven is simply lightning whichever God answers with fire or lightning from heaven and certainly lighten lightning would cause something to burn that will be the real God this should be bale strong point and the prophets the veil go first what do they do to try and get bail to send fire we can actually see a progression and what they do what’s the first thing well first it says they call on him we don’t know the intensity of that call but they call on him then they start leaving around the altar then what do they do before they cut themselves says they cry with a loud voice oh they’re getting more intense in their call and then they cut themselves cut themselves gash themselves with swords and Lance’s till the blood gushes out and then finally says that they rave they’re getting more and more what’s the word not eccentric they’re going more and more crazy trying to get trying to get bail to answer ecstatic i think is the word i was looking for now how long do they try to get bails attention how much time goes by the entire morning into into the evening or technically the afternoon says the time the evening sacrifice which as best we understand is about three o’clock but no morning begins at 6am so how many hours is that six to three in the afternoon nine hours nine hours but what is the result nothing the text tells us this twice verse 26 but there was no voice no one answered and verse 29 there was no voice no one answered and no one paid attention talk about awkward and embarrassing nine hours of 450 prophets crying out leaping gashing themselves for nothing Elijah even mocks them suggestion they should cry louder because well maybe your God’s occupied a verb suggested meditation maybe he’s deep in thought you gotta cry loud to shake him out of his trance or maybe he’s gone aside the verb suggests private withdrawal even has the connotation of removing waste so can be translated maybe he’s relieving himself it’s actually the way the ESV translates this verse or maybe he’s on a journey the gods were said too often journey to various places in the world better hope it gets back in time shout so that he hurries back or maybe he’s asleep the gods were said to take time to sleep too maybe your God is snoozing better shout to wake him up well there’s absolutely no response there is useless and it soon becomes Elijah’s term Elijah repairs an altar of Yahweh that was at the site an altar that had been torn down he repairs it using 12 stones one stone for each tribe of Israel Elijah kills and prepares the sacrifice at the time of the evening offering but it goes even further what is he order to be done to the wood and sacrifice douse it with water now is it three times with four pitchers of water this is a fair amount of water there’s so much water poured over the sacrifice the water flows all over the altar and the trench around the altar is also filled with water either filled with additional water or whether runoff from the altar now how well do wet things burn not very well in fact I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to burn things that are wet as long as it’s wet it’s not going to burn you have to dry it first so the odds are stacked against Elijah and Yahweh but allowed to simply praise what for desires is Elijah express in his prayer god make yourself known as the true God of Israel what else doing yeah he says answer me so that’s his most basic desire but why why does he want him to answer him well one reason we’ve said is to make yourself known as the one true God what else then I’m your servant I’m you’re true prophet what else the people may see what yeah so he does actually say that twice but as we mentioned show yourself to be the true God show yourself to be the real existent God what else that’s right I’m not only your true prophet but everything I’ve done has been in obedience to you and then one more thing one surprising thing he wants the people to know yes notice that last one let me see if I can find the verse again yeah 37 answer me that this people may know that oh that you o lo o Lord our God and that you have turned their heart back again you have turned their heart back again we’ll come back to that a little bit later now God does answer is prayer what burns up everything burns up the wood burns up the sacrifice burns up the stones of the altar burn up and those are not flammable the dust of the ground burns up and even the water in the trench is licked up there’s basically only a crater left where the ultra was God didn’t just sent fire he sent fire how did the people react and he confessed the Lord be God they fall on their faces and proclaim the Lord he is God Yahweh he is God just as it was emphatic that there’s no one home for bail it was repeated twice so it’s in fata cod is true and his presence is there I am he is god I am he is God Elijah then orders all 450 prophets of bail sees they take it to the book the brook kishan which on the map flows here on the eastern side of Carmel the carmel mountain range so it would have been nearby take them to the brook Kishan and the prophets are killed there we’re not pulled what happens to the 400 prophets of Asherah we don’t seem to a feature in this account but they probably would recognize this false prophets and kill do after telling a happy and drink Elijah goes back up to Carmel puts his head between his knees it then tells the servant to go up and look at the sea seven times remember caramels right here on the coast so had been totally doable to look towards the sea and he asked him to report what he sees doesn’t see anything but the seven time he sees a small cloud Elijah then tells the servants la have you better go home and your chariot now because the heavy rain is coming a HAP sets out for Jezreel which is right about here about 15 to 25 miles from Mount Carmel this has been the winter capital of a hab in the Northern Kingdom sets out with his chariot but what amazing detail closes the chapter I’ll lie to you outruns the chariot the Jezreel the hand of the Lord was upon him and he’s able to outrun him I tell you Elijah is the runner he’s always running anyways let’s take all these observations and interpret and work through some basic ones and then gets us some more complex ones what is Elijah doing at the end of the account with his head between his knees he’s praying it’s not stated directly but that’s certainly what he’s doing he’s praying and what is he praying he’s praying for the rain to return because it’s right after he does all this that the rain comes by the way if you’re looking for biblical prayer postures here’s one we can call the elijah head between the knees james 5 17 18 by the way backs up our conclusion here speaking about elijah james says elijah was a man with a nature like ours and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and did not rain on the earth for three years and six months then he prayed again in the sky poured rain on the earth and produced its fruit and that’s exactly what we’re seeing here at the end of his chapter backing up a little bit why does they have call Elijah the trouble er of Israel how was allied to troubled Israel yeah he says you brought the famine you proclaim the famine it’s your fault you brought the lack of rain you brought the drought you brought the famine cut Elijah makes clear the blame for the drought belongs to the wicked King not God and God’s holy prophet by the way this is a typical response of the proud heart of man is it not rather than facing up to the consequences of his own sin the sinner blames others especially God for example a child violates class rules gets a detention but he blames the teacher for being me not my fault the rules are too strict the teachers to me or a husband pays no attention to his wife and when she confronts him about it he excuses his behavior by saying why would I want to be around you when you only complain we’ll admit the fault blame someone else or even more generally many people say if God were really good why is there so much suffering in the world ah a problem is not God’s lack of goodness or his lack of love it’s man sin it’s not God’s fault it’s our fault we did this to ourselves God’s not the one responsible we are the ones responsible it’s the same way they have in Elijah a hab is responsible with his sin for the judgment on Israel not Elijah and not God now why does elijah have the false prophets killed isn’t that a little brutal a little extreme okay that’s certainly true just from a practical standpoint it’s a it would be better for these prophets to die than for the people to persist in their idolatry and a whole nation to be killed but there’s a more direct reason that we can justify Elijah yeah it’s commanded in the Old Testament Deuteronomy 13-5 but the prophet of that dreamer of dreams speaking of the the one who is proclaiming other gods shall be put to death because he has counseled rebellion against the Lord your God who brought from the land of slavery and redeemed you from the house of slavery to seduce you from the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk so you shall purge the evil from among you now remember we’re not Israel this is not a prescription for us today or not to go around killing false prophets or false teachers this was God’s provision for that special nation at that special time with three years of drought with the contest of fire from heaven and with the reintroduction of rain into Israel what does God show about bail he is not a real God and he has no power I mean you can’t have arranged a more comprehensive exposure of Bale’s impotence let me think about it when the people start worshiping the god of rain and storms and turn away from Yahweh they get three and half years of no rain then when the god of the sky is called upon to send fire our lightning from the sky which he should be able to do he can’t do it but Yahweh can do it and he does it emphatically and finally when the people turn away from this sky God and they kill his prophets and it turned back to Yahweh what happens rain returns to the land the conclusion is clear bail is not god yahweh is god couldn’t have been made more clearly now of course bail is not the only impotent God also call gods and art and idols are just as powerless and useless as bail we don’t have time to explore this today but I think you’ll find it very evident at affine if you do a word search on the word idols in the Old Testament look at the passages in which they appear so often especially in the prophet looks like Ezekiel Jeremiah you hear the writers decry vain idols or mute idols as being totally useless these idols and their gods they can’t see they can’t hear and they can’t speak they can’t move that can’t even prevent their idols from falling over they can’t save they can’t do anything the Bible even literally calls idol worshippers stupid the people who go after idols are stupid it says totally useless now Elijah mocks the profits of bail our Christians to imitate are Christians free to mock false religions adherence the false religions and false teachers how do you think yeah joe yeah I think that’s a good cautious stance and I may explore a little bit I don’t know if we want to go so far as to say mock but certainly we want to expose the folly of false religion we should note looking at elijah’s behavior here god remember that principle of interpreting historical narrative just because a person does it or just because the righteous person does it does not mean that you should necessarily do it too they’re just reporting that it happened not saying that you should do it however if we look at the example of Jesus and the Apostles in the New Testament we can see some interesting things they’d never speak rudely or harshly to any unbeliever except i’m going to use the word rudely they do speak harshly to false teachers they speak harshly to and about false teachers for example Jesus calls the Pharisees you may remember blind guides whitewashed tombs among other things Jude and his letter calls false teachers wandering stars and wild waves full of sea garbage Paul expresses in the book of Galatians a wish that there was teaching circumcision as necessary for salvation would go all the way and emasculate themselves why these severe words all’s because of the dangers that these false teachers present not only to themselves but also to others people need to appreciate the level of evil and danger connected with these teachers they need to be exposed with severe words now these words are never juvenile or flippant in order they denigrate someone’s appearance or speech they are thoughtful denunciations of grave evil of the behavior and teaching of false teachers now what about mocking religions or religious practices here’s my opinion it is right for us to point out the absurdity folly an inconsistency of false worship but we want to be very cautious about how we do so because worship is serious it’s not a subject to be approached rudely flippantly or cavalierly so I think when we think of mocking we think about people being simply rude or um flippant I don’t think that’s really what we’re too that’s the really the way we’re supposed to act we should expose falling but not in a way that is shameful or unhelpful final question interpretive question I want to ask why did God choose to send rain again to Israel because right at the very beginning says go see a hat and afterwards i will send rain why that’s right we remember that detail he says Elijah says let them know that you have turned their hearts back now why is God turning their hearts back have they done anything to deserve it yeah it’s a great point a great observation they the reminders in the text and in a light is prayer they point back to the Covenant that God made with Abraham and by extension his descendants a covenant of love a covenant of faithfulness God is remembering his covenant and choosing to act and compassion but not simply x to send ring he’s not going to violate his holiness he’s not going to violate his the other part of his covenant which says when you turn away from you I’m going to judge you he’s going to fulfill both his compassionate and his holy nature by granting repentance and then granting rain now this is just the start of a movement toward repentance Elijah probably thought that everything was going to turn around all at once and so he gets extremely discouraged we don’t see it here but it comes in the next chapter chapter when he finds out that Jezebel undeterred by the death of her profits is actually still trying to kill Elijah but revival is starting here in the Northern Kingdom and it would later culminate under Elijah and a later king gee who as a result of this revival Bale worship is almost entirely purged from the Northern Kingdom this was a gracious act of God now this devotion of God doesn’t last in the Northern Kingdom and not even everybody is on board surely at the start or throughout it but it is a period of mercy it is a act of compassion from a holy God to this particular generation and moving their hearts back towards him and an N sending rain none of this was deserved none of this was even to be expected but God out of his kind heart determined to send relief to Israel through rain and thus determined first to send repentance to make that rain possible so we’re seeing once again like with Jonah we see the compassionate beautiful holy heart of God questions about what we’ve looked at yes Joe you okay very good question we won the time to fully explore this today but I will try and say something about it he’s asking what about the demonic power behind bail is there what kind of power is there because Joe didn’t say it specifically but the bible does associate idols with demons is there demonic power behind idols well it’s really interesting that if you examine what the Bible says about idols it has two strands of thought they’re not contradictory they’re just I guess two ways of looking at it one is that idols are completely powerless they’re useless there’s no one home another’s that idols are associated with demons even in the book of first Corinthians you can see that in one chapter he says an idol is nothing it doesn’t matter if eat food sacrificed idols but then in a later chapter he says I don’t want you participating in idolatrous feasts because they’re ademas associated with idols I don’t want you to partake with demons how can those things be true at the same time again without getting full fully into it I think that there is an association with demons but that doesn’t mean that there is a demonic power to idols at least not in the sense of those idols being able to do anything for you there is a dangerous nature to idols because of demons there’s a bitching character to idols which is why we have to flee from idols but it’s not the demons have some sort of power that Idol worshipers get to tap into no the idols are still useless I mean even if we think about even if we were to say oh the demons are there they might give some power to the idol or the idol worshippers remember who’s under cruising control the demons god they can’t do anything without God allowing them to and they can never accomplish anything except for God’s own purposes now again he’s not responsible for the evil but he allows it for its own purposes any way you slice it idles don’t have power demons ultimately don’t have power it’s god god is the one with the power he’s the only one that can help you he’s the only one that can save you so we could probably say more about that there’s an association with the moon with idols but it’s still nonetheless true that idols are powerless false gods are powerless they cannot do anything for you other questions alright let’s consider just a couple of application questions as we close the passage makes clear that physical idols provide no true help or ability how is this truth directly relevant today physical idols provide no true help or salvation how is this directly relevant today are their physical idols in the world yes there are where I mean various religions have them yes d oh wow wow okay I didn’t know about that so it just repeat what he was saying on route 27 there’s a Buddhist temple I guess with a what someone’s backyard okay someone’s that God with a huge image of Buddha there and certainly we know that Hinduism Shintoism various other religions they include idols actual idols but the Bible makes clear those idols have no ability those gods are not home there’s no one there they can’t help you there’s also another relevance though for some some statues that are not called idols some images that are not referred to as idols even in Christianity there are sex that pray to or honor images like Roman Catholicism Greek orthodoxy the same word about idols needs to be declared there as well the saints are not home no one hears no one understands no one pays attention Mary and the Saints have no ability to help you you’re not listening you’re one who has the ability to help you as Christ and really Saints are just relabeled versions of ancient Greek and Roman gods in the first place these are useless and vain idols people need to turn from them but it’s not just the physical idols how is this text relevant for idols of the heart we’ve only got about a minute left we don’t have full time to explore this but it’s true in the same way take any Idol of the heart for example wealth it is deceptive and then it seems to have power oh look what I can do with wealth look at how it’s going to satisfy me look at how it’s going to secure me no it’s not true the more well if you have the less satisfied you are with it and the security it seems rev I to you can be taken away at any moment and there’s some things that wealth just can’t help you with most notably your own sin and death wealth can’t stop that but Yahweh he can do all the things that wealth can’t do he can satisfy you he can provide for you he can make you secure until your time on earth is done and he can deal with the most important thing he can save you you can save you from your sin and give you a turn alive all idols with their heart conform to the pattern that physical idols do they seem to offer power they seem to offer satisfaction but they don’t actually yahweh does and finally we’ve already broached this so we don’t have to spend time on it now if eyes are empty and useless why is it so important to stay away from them well they don’t have power to save they do have the power to cause one to stumble they can capture you they can bewitch you they are extremely deceptive because they play on the flesh or the fleshly nature that remains with us and they use false promises to appeal to that fleshly nature so even though an idol is powerless it doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous we must unmask idols for what they are and if we’re involved with an idol we need to get as far away from it as possible because it will has like a gravity to it it’ll try and keep us with it alright that’s all we have time for today we’ve talked about Elijah next time we’re talking about Elijah Elijah successor let’s pray father thank you for this amazing truth the way you expose idols and show yourself to be the only one with power the only one with true power the only one who can truly help thank you that you have helped us continue to help us provide for us god and cause us turn our hearts to you we pray in Jesus name Amen

    The Kingdom Is Divided

Answers Bible Curriculum Year 2 Quarter 2 Lesson 9

In this lesson, David Capoccia discusses the compromises of King Solomon and the consequences for the nation of Israel. David Capoccia examines how Solomon compromised, how God reacted, and how Israel was affected. Solomon’s life is a great cautionary tale of how someone wise, even a great teacher of wisdom and of fearing God, could nonetheless hurt himself and others with great sinful compromise.

last week we sampled the wisdom of God that appears in the book of Proverbs what are some of the concepts we want to remember when studying and interpreting proverbs what’s one of them well it is God’s wisdom for sure this is superior to the what is called the wisdom of man or what is offered as the wisdom of man what else Roy right that’s extremely important to remember with proverbs men of proverbs are not written as absolute they are general principles of life they allow for exceptions we also saw that proverbs is written in Hebrew poetry with parallel ism so there’s the juxtaposition the purposeful connection between different lines and also remember that not all of the verses give direct applications they tell you how life is but they don’t necessarily tell you how to react to life that takes meditation it takes comparison with the rest of Scripture who wrote the Proverbs Solomon mostly mostly Solomon to whom did he write basically everybody he identifies the naive that is the simple and those who don’t know the young those who haven’t learned yet and the wise so basically everybody everybody can benefit from the book of Proverbs and why did he write the book of proverbs he tells us his purpose in the first chapter it is to do what to make people wise to impart wisdom to give instruction now what’s a Solomon’s show in the book of Proverbs are the even the first few chapters what are the two most basic ideas for wisdom fear the Lord that’s basic the fear of the Lord is beginning of wisdom and what’s the other basic idea how should you treat with them yeah is the treasure to be diligently even painfully sought it’s that important and that we have to proverb 2 verses in proverbs let’s say at the beginning of the Lord or the fear of the Lord is beginning of with them but also there’s another proverb that says that the beginning of wisdom is seek wisdom so those are those two basic principles are two basic concepts for wisdom which areas of life does the book of Proverbs address basically all of them it touches on many if not all of them and we sample that ourselves now proverbs is the very wisdom of God and it’s truly valuable we ought to seek it arduously like a person digging for treasure that he knows is in a certain spot but there are hindrances to accessing God’s wisdom we will stop short of obtaining God’s wisdom if we settle for the wisdom of man if we’re distracted by the cares and comforts of life so by faith we need to persevere against the flesh in order to obtain the Blessed wisdom of God questions about what we looked at last week okay so now we come to the latter part of Solomon’s reign and his pursuit of folly we’ve been foreshadowing this for a number of lessons now but now we actually take a look at it here’s our outline for today’s class we’re going to first look at how Solomon goes astray we’ll look at how God reacts and the prophecy he gives regarding the future of Solomon’s kingdom and then we’ll finish by looking at how God’s prophecy comes to pass that’s right father I pray that you would open your word to us give us your instruction by your spirit and Lord let it powerfully work in us so that we can throw off sin so that we can become mature so we can act wise or wisely and we could obtain the benefit give me the ability to explain now father I pray in Jesus name Amen alright we look first and how Solomon turns away from the Lord we’re going to be looking most get a couple chapters of first king is but before we do that let’s remind ourselves of some of the things that were written in the Pentateuch regarding Kings look at Deuteronomy 17 open your Bibles please and turn to Deuteronomy 17 and look at verses 14 to 17 and your pupils this is page 203 there are a couple things written in this passage and we’ve actually looked at it before regarding how Kings ought to behave whenever Israel gets a king but we’re specifically looking at the things that we’re told the king is not to do look at verse 14 in chapter 17 when you went to the land which the Lord your God gives you and you possess it and live in it and you say I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me it shall surely set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses one from among your countrymen you shall set his king over yourselves you may not put a foreigner over yourself who is not your countrymen moreover he shall not multiply horses for himself nor shall he caused the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses since the Lord has said to you you shall never again return that way it shall not multiply wives for himself or else his heart will turn away nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself I will just stop right there according to this passage for actions are forbidden to issue as kings what are the four give me one they must not multiply wives they were even given the reason because his heart will turn away if he does that what else not multiply horses very good what else not to multiply gold and silver for himself or greatly increase not the greatly increased silver and gold for himself and then the last one kind of little corollary to the one about horses they are not to go to Egypt to get horses and again we’re given a reason because God has said you shall not return that way now let’s think about these a little bit what does God have against horses can’t the King have a lot of horses there’s nothing wrong with horses but why does god come in not to multiply horses yeah yeah I think that’s certainly part of it it’s a sign of wealth and prestige there’s another aspect of horses that’s that we can see sometimes by how horses are talked about in the Old Testament they are important for or right they are an important strategic resource particularly because they can be used for chariots and perhaps even four horsemen and so if you have horses if you have a lot of horses then you might feel strong militarily and just as there would be a temptation to solace in one’s wealth and the horses also in one’s military power I don’t need to trust God because look at all the horses I have I can handle any sort of military invasion or military issue he’d be tempted the King would be tempted to trust in the horses instead of God so God says don’t even have a lot of horses now what does God have against Egypt God doesn’t even want is people to go back to Egypt to get horses why not Egypt yeah Roy hmm yeah you mentioned two ideas there we’re not told specifically but we can think about it a little bit come up with some possible reasons why God commands not to go back to Egypt or not to go to Egypt for horses certainly the way of life in Egypt it was a temptation to the Israelites when here in the wilderness they’re like let’s go back to Egypt it says I don’t want you to be tempted to go back to that way of life what you did there your life there so I don’t want you to go there even for economic reasons and gone really because he even quotes are yeah it quotes the words the Lord by saying you shall not return that way God wanted to make it clear to the Israelites there is a once and for all break with Egypt maybe you’re allowed to do things or the other nations but Egypt Egypt is different because each of represents something to you I don’t want you to even think about going back to what you were I removed you from that place totally once and for all stay away from Egypt don’t go to Egypt for horses don’t even allow yourself to be tempted by going back there now the third prohibition about wives why would having many wives turn the King’s heart away from God now we’re going to see this later on but even before we see what happens in Solomon’s life why this prohibition against multiplying wives yeah Danny okay explain the connection you said it would lead to idolatry to other gods how so that’s right so the implication here is not is not merely marrying Israelite women but he’s marrying foreign women and that’s particularly going to turn his heart away even if it just want marries Israelite women multiplies Israelite wives that itself could be a temptation because one becomes more and more earth minded wanting to please and be pleased by the many wives and not looking to God but this probably is in reference to multiplying wives via political alliances and that means marrying idolatrous wives this would lead to a temptation towards idolatry in the King’s Own life it could lead to idolatry and Israel at large God warned Israel not to intermarry with the nation’s and if the King is doing that he’s going to be invulnerable just as the people would be vulnerable you cannot marry pagan wives and he’s not to trust in political alliances so for many reasons got to stay away from multiple wives the king is not to have multiplied wives where you’re going to save really yeah exactly yes thanks for mentioning that Roy we have these other reasons about not marrying foreign wives and not multiplying wives so that one is distracted but the original blueprint in Genesis was one man and one woman and to become one flesh one once you start going outside that blueprint you’re going to have all sorts of problems not just for a king but for any person where we gonna say David right right right we’ll talk about Solomon specifically a little bit later but certainly this command in Deuteronomy was in contrast to the nation’s just as you were saying David it was very common for the kings of that area in the Middle Eastern and elsewhere to have many many wives and that was a sign of their prestige like having horses or like having other things but it also was part of their political arrangements and part of just them pleasing themselves and got to stay away from that don’t go near that and then finally this prohibition about greatly multiplying silver and gold why is why that prohibition is it wrong to have silver and gold yeah again the emphasis on the word greatly is showing us that there’s there’s a there’s a level that one can take with wealth or that a king could take with wealth that would be bad it would actually lead him away from God in the same way that wives and horses and other things would it would be a temptation towards greed it’d be a temptation to seek security and his wealth and the temptation to be satisfied in his wealth rather than by God wealth is necessary for kings they need money to rule to pay their servants to arrange things for the kingdom but greatly multiplying gold and silver for himself is not necessary for God’s King it is more necessary that he protect himself from the dangers of wealth by not taking what is more than her by not taking more than what is necessary from his people and by using whatever extra he has or God glorifying ends now this is actually many the same principles that we exercise ourselves so that we ought to exercise ourselves when it comes to money how much is necessary for a king to spend on himself well that line is not clear but certainly no king ought to oppresses people merely to enrich himself now so for many of these things all except polygamy it’s not that the Act is wrong in itself having money is not wrong having gold or silver is not wrong having horses by itself is not wrong but by multiplying these things there’s a great danger and God commands his righteous Kings to not even go near that danger don’t multiply horses don’t go down to Egypt don’t have many wives don’t multiply silver and gold for yourself now how does Solomon’s behavior compared with what is prescribed on this list well let’s find out turn over now to first Kings chapter 10 first Kings chapter 10 verses starting in verse 14 I’m going to look at a couple different sections here so this is after a number of chapters describing the greatness of Solomon’s rule the splendor of his wisdom and of his palace in his kingdom and now verse 14 this is page 362 in your few bottles we’re going to be down to verse 22 now the weight of gold which came into Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold besides that from the traders and the where’s the merchant and all the kings of the Arabs and the governors of the country King Solomon made 200 large shields of beaten gold using six hundred shekels of gold on each large shield he made 300 shields of beaten gold using three minas of gold on each shield and the King put them in the house of the forests of Lebanon moreover the King made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with refined gold there were six steps to the throne and around top to the throne and its rear and arms on each side of the seat and two lions standing beside the arms 12 Lions were standing there on the six steps on the one side and on the other nothing like it was made for any other Kingdom all King Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold and all the vessels of the house of the force of Lebanon or of pure gold none was of silver it was not considered valuable in the days of Solomon but the King had at sea the ships of Tarshish with the ships of Hiram once every three years the ships of Tarshish came bringing gold and silver ivory and apes and peacocks stop there for a moment we’re not going to take time to observe all the details here but what is Solomon gathering a lot of each year gold gold silver and other valuable items and on whom is he spending it or using it himself notice the items all mention here they go in the king’s palace that it says the house of the force of lebanon that’s Solomon’s palace the golden shields are going there the golden drinking vessels are going there the throne the ivory and gold throne is going there these things are not for the people and not for God and we’ll even here a little bit later on about how Solomon’s rule at least the latter part it was considered oppressive to the people so he’s gathering a lot of gold and I’m going to hear later on that the people were suffering because of it so we see a problem with Solomon’s following of the Deuteronomy commands but now let’s look at verses 26 and 29 just giving two verses there now Solomon now Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen and he had 1,400 chariots and twelve thousand horsemen any station them in the chariot cities with the king in Jerusalem the King made silver as common as stones in Jerusalem and he made Cedars as plentiful sycamore trees that are in the lowland also Solomon’s import of horses was from Egypt and QA and the King’s merch is procured them from QA floor price a chariot was imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver and a horse for 150 and by the same means they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and to the Kings the arameans what else does salman multiplying for himself horses and chariots chariots and horses he’s also exporting them to other nations but from where to Solomon get these chariots and horses Egypt and this other place cuit which probably is meaning cilicia southern Asia Minor but he’s going down to Egypt to get horses not looking good Solomon you’re a great king and all but aren’t these exactly what God said not to do but there’s more and this is the really big one 1st Kings 11 12 8 just right done out of the back to the next verse now King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh Moabite M&I adonian and Hittite women from the nation’s concerning which the Lord had said to the sons of Israel you shall not associate with them nor shall they associate with you for they will surely turn your heart away after other gods or after their gods Solomon held fast to these in love he had 700 wives princesses and 300 concubines and his wives turned his heart away for when Solomon was old his wives turned his heart away after other gods and his heart was not wholly devoted to the Lord his God as the heart of David his father had been for Solomon went after ashteroth the goddess of the Sidonians and after milk come the detestable idol of the ammonites Solomon did what was evil and the side of the Lord and did not follow the Lord fully as David his father had done then Solomon built a high place for Chi maj the detestable Idol of Moab on the mountain which is east of Jerusalem and for Molech the detestable Idol of the sons of Ammon thus also he did for all his foreign wives who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods so this is serious compromise not always the King multiplying wives but what kind of wives are they they’re foreign women they are idolatrous pagan women Solomon had a total of 1,000 why 700 royal wives and 300 concubines as David mentioned earlier he’s becoming like the kings of the neighboring kingdoms though he’s out doing his neighbor’s actually in the extent of his harem many of these wives were probably taken as political alliances but others especially the concubines were simply taken for the Kings own pleasure notice the phrase in verse 2 said that Solomon held fast to these and love it’s pretty intense Salman clung to them there’s an intense need to Solomon seeking out pleasing and being pleased by these wives who was Solomon’s first wife it mentions here the beginning of the passage you got all these other women besides the daughter of Pharaoh and mentioned earlier in the historical account in Kings that was his first wife or that appears to be his first wife so much for not going back to Egypt he marries the daughter of Pharaoh and what was the result of these multiply this multiplication of wives first two quotes Deuteronomy 7 and verse 3 quotes the passage we read earlier his wives turned his heart away and his old age hoping to please his various wives Solomon build shrines for every kind abominable God and Goddess many of these deities we know accepting human sacrifice not only does Solomon build the worship sites but it says that Solomon himself went after these gods Solomon’s heart was not fully devoted to the Lord like the heart of his father David Solomon became idolatrous and though it’s not mentioned specifically here he leads Israel into idolatry as well because they see the King doing it they see the Kings wives doing it then surely Israel can do it too so let’s interpret a little bit now of the four prohibitions given to the Kings in Deuteronomy 17 which the Solomon violate all of them all of them maybe not at the beginning probably not at the beginning but certainly by the end of his reign he is flagrantly violating all of them and as bad as these individual acts are however the result is far worse the King becomes an ID auditor and idolatry and intermarriage become normalized and Israelite society once again lead from the top now remember who’s doing this this is solomon this is the same solomon who was said to be beloved by God since birth who was given a special name from God to emphasize God’s love relationship to Solomon he was blessed with wisdom riches and honor he was given rest by God from all enemies this is the Solomon who built God’s temple who saw God’s glory inhabit the temple this is the wisest of all men on earth how could he do such a thing well this is the big question right how can such a wise man act so stupidly but we asked a similar question not too long ago about David right how could a man said to be after God’s own heart sin in such horrible ways well it comes down to and we’ll explore different parts of this answer but it does come down to the horrible murderous deceitfulness of sin sin is utterly sinful it so wicked and monstrous and through the flesh through the world system through the evil one it can cause even the wisest or most righteous of men to stumble and in big ways no one is invulnerable to sin or temptation now concerning Solomon’s wisdom how could a wise man do such a thing we could get into the question of what was the real nature of Solomon’s wisdom was it a general ability to understand the world its life its people or did it also include theological understanding certainly the examples the applications of wisdom we see in the first 10 chapters of Kings they have a lot to do with this world he’s making legal decisions he’s giving discourses on trees and animals answering various questions from visitors but certainly whatever the nature of Solomon’s understanding was he did know what and where true wisdom was found or he did know what true wisdom was and where it was found we know he knew he knew this because he wrote it right we just read in Proverbs last week the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom whether that nugget of wisdom was given to him by God or if he just acquired that as part of also his general understanding he knew that the wisest thing is the most basic part of wisdom mr. fear the Lord but he didn’t listen to his own words why Solomon why didn’t you listen to your own teaching because its flesh told him something different and it felt good to listen to the flesh rather than leave God and wait for the delayed reward of God certainly Solomon was uniquely tempted if we say oh I would never do what Solomon did we’re not in the situation of Solomon he was blessed with so much understanding and so much wealth he’s been giving accolades from every side gifts from all sorts of people he would have been uniquely tempted to cling to and trust those things his wealth his wisdom his power I like the proud apostles you may remember pastor talk not too long ago and his sermons on mark they’re proud apostles you’re casting out demons they stopped praying right and then they can’t cast out the demons anymore they can’t figure out why in a similar way Solomon because of the greatness of the gifts he’s received each trusted in his own wisdom rather than gods and he acted contrary to God’s Word cleese Yossi’s tells us that Solomon at least for part of his life purposefully pursued falling on purpose he acted stupidly just to investigate it I want to see if there’s any value to this a good deal of Solomon’s wicked behavior was simply experiment so he could gain more knowledge act more wisely and teach others but was it wise to conduct such experiments no why not oh that’s a good point yeah even if you say I’m just going to see I’m just going to experiment you don’t know how far it may actually take you yeah there’s a he didn’t not considering the danger of actually once you’re inside folly why else was it wrong say that again yeah that’s another thing you can’t just simply say oh I’m going to find out you’re finding out is going to have consequences for you for your family and for the nation you can’t just say oh that’s just an academic thing oh it affects real life what are you going to say George exactly and there’s probably the biggest reason is that there’s no need it goes against God’s Word do you think that God is lying do you think that God has forgotten something that you need to find out yourself so not only did he fail to consider the danger of pursuing folly that it will be more difficult to actually remove himself from it he did not consider the consequences of experimenting in this way he did himself in the nation injury but God already told him the answer God already showed him the answer to his questions in God’s Word there was no need to pursue folly to find out whether there was something to it or not to pursue sin to pursue self-indulgence but we can do the same thing can’t we we and say to ourselves I just want to find out what this is like I want to find out more about this sin or this activity so that I can better stand against it I want to see what the people in the world are doing or watching so I can get a better idea of how to reach them this is nonsense God already tells us what we need to know about those things we’re not missing out on some value or some information and like Solomon we do ourselves and we do others injury when we insist on trusting and our own understanding finding out for ourselves and because Solomon did this we have even more reason not to do it ourselves because the end of a Salman basically confirmed everything that God said in the first place Solomon then represents a cautionary tale to us don’t do what I did because when I pursued my own understanding when I tried to find out for myself I found out that God was right all along so there’s no need for us to say I just got to find out for myself I need to find it can’t just simply trust God’s Word I need to see if there’s something I’m missing out on I need to find out more about this way of life part of the explanation too and I think rich was alluding to this for why the wisest man could fall into such folly is the gradual pneus of compromise I’m sure when Solomon married his first foreign wife he did not think that he would be building pagan shrines the next day or even multiplying his wives but over time Solomon’s resistance was worn down so many wives so many in treaties such great desire to please them you really did love them or at least in a way the text says he held fast to them and love and so Solomon ended up doing at the end of his life what he never dreamed he would have done in the beginning again perhaps due to the pride of trusting in his own mind it did not appreciate the danger the great insistence of God’s warnings he decided that he was strong enough smart enough righteous enough or whatever enough to withstand temptation even though he was already violating God’s Word in willfully exposing himself the temptation he knew there was great temptation everybody said I’ll be fine and we can do the same make no mistake the sign of Christian maturity is not choosing to expose yourself to sin and remaining unaffected it is choosing not to expose yourself to sit in the first place and fleeing once you encounter temptation I’ll just say I’m strong enough I’ve grown enough I understand enough in the word you say if I understand enough then I know I don’t even want to go near that the Proverbs again expressed this principle also Solomon you knew this Solomon why didn’t you follow your own advice why don’t you follow God’s Word it felt good to the flesh Solomon chose to set it aside set aside wisdom for an enjoyable compromise and a compromise that led some more compromises so we need to appreciate again this morning the seriousness of sin God’s Way is blessed the book the purity principle speaking specifically about sexual morality it says immorality is always stupid but purity is always smart that’s true in sin in general any kind of sinful behavior any kind of worldly behavior is always stupid and we can know that because God tells us but righteousness is always smart it’s always wise questions or comments so far yeah bill you’re talking about in Deuteronomy mmhmm yeah yeah that’s a good point yeah hmm yeah let me repeat your comment bill and the passenger Deuteronomy that we read earlier just a few verses down and talks about what the king is supposed to do and that is to make a copy of the law and to steady a day and night so that he won’t depart from God’s Word and so that he won’t exalt himself above his brother we’ll come back to that concept a little bit later on but he said remember what your role is it is to serve the people is to be good to the people it is not to use the people to enrich yourself and to indulge yourself but when Solomon was as you were saying bill pursuing all these projects and wealth and trade and wives he doesn’t have time to study the word much less so Bay it are you going to say boy hmm a good question speaking about Ecclesiastes what’s it written when was it written in Solomon’s reign and if it were written early how could it be talking about those pursuits in the past tense my understanding is that it was probably written late in his reign I know that Ecclesiastes is a difficult book to interpret but I think you’re right Roy to point out that he talks about the things that he pursued in the past and how they’re all vain that would seem strange for Solomon’s say at the beginning of his reign when he was following the Lord and then the later part of his reign to actually turn away from the Lord so this sounds like the words of Solomon after he’s pursued this fought this foolish course looking back at at all and saying it was a waste it was vain and really the only wise thing to do is to enjoy what God gives you and to fear Him so I would say probably please yes was written late Solomon’s reign other questions or comments that’s a good question where does proverbs fall proverbs at least from what what I’ve read how people interpret it is being towards the beginning part of his reign so you can hear a lot of the wise counsel that he knew and he was teaching others but later on he himself sets aside that counsel now I suppose one could argue that he wrote it later because he’s looking back and now he can he can make all these determinations but I think he even before he pursued the course of folly he knew he already knew what the Lord’s word was and he was teaching people that and he just ignored his own advice and this is something we can do right we can become great teachers of God’s wisdom and yet not believe it ourselves not follow it ourselves I think that’s what we see with Solomon he could write the Proverbs and then act contrary to the Proverbs and part of it is I think as you were saying David he didn’t intend to do that but he made these small compromises and later on he’s making big compromises he didn’t appreciate the danger he was putting himself in or he ignored it rather say something che hmm Wow yeah let me do her yeah Ecclesiastes 413 you were saying I’ll just repeat it for the recording but even Ecclesiastes says it’s better to be a poor and wise youth in a old king who can no longer take warning an old and foolish king let’s move on the rest of what we’re going to talk about today we’ll go through a little bit more quickly but we see how Solomon turns away from God it’s a cautionary tale here’s a wise man he knew God’s wisdom but he did not believe it and he suffered the consequences and we can do the same so we need to beware of Solomon’s example but let’s see how God responds let’s see how it actually plays out look now at verse 9 and 1st Kings 11 I’ll read the verse 13 verse 9 now the Lord was angry with Solomon because his heart was turned away from the Lord the God of Israel who had appeared him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing that he should not go after other gods but he did not observe what the Lord had commanded so the Lord said to Solomon because you have done this and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes which I have commanded you i will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant nonetheless I will not do it in your days for the sake of your father David but I will tear it out of the hand of your son however I will not tear away all the kingdom but i will give one tribe to your son for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen observe God’s anger what Solomon did was wicked and God was righteously mad about it this is the way God treats sin this is the way God treats Arsene what judgment does God promised Solomon I will take the kingdom from you and this is the same as what other tragic King Saul the exact same words God said to Saul because you’ve refused to obey me I’m going to take away the kingdom from you and give it to someone better I’ll give it to your servant and he meant David but there’s a difference here God qualifies the judgment against Solomon he says two things will nevertheless not happen what two things I won’t tear away the entire kingdom I’ll leave one king or one tribe of the kingdom one part of it and what else I won’t do it during your lifetime it’ll happen in the lifetime of your son now these are gracious limits on God’s judgment why God actually says why he’s putting these limits there for the sake of David and for Jerusalem with the sake of David that covenant he established with David resets you have followed after me you obey me I’m going to establish your throne I’m going to establish your seat on the throne and they shall continue to rule they will have an eternal throne and then for Jerusalem that’s the place where God’s temple is the place of God’s name he says I’m going to honor my name and my temple by being gracious to the city and being gracious to the ruler of the city so we see again that though God must judge sin his covenant love precipitates his kindness the Davidic covenant is an impetus for God to act kindly to Solomon there Solomon does not deserve it this is similar to how God act with Abrahamic covenant based on the Abrahamic covenant to Israel because of God’s desire to be kind Israel through David because of God’s desire to reward David’s righteousness because of God’s desire to send a redeemer an ultimate King one day through the seed of David God was going to be kind of Solomon and to Israel and it would not be a complete judgment God’s sovereignty once once again Evan here he established his kingdoms you can take away kingdoms Solomon as I said did not deserve God’s kindness but for his own glory God was compassionate to Solomon to Israel and to us today who benefit and indirectly the kingly line of David would remain despite Solomon’s flagrant disobedience in accordance with god’s words to David God was going to chase and David seed but he would not totally remove the kingdom now it’s interesting notwithstanding the book of Ecclesiastes like I said probably written late in Solomon’s reign by Solomon we don’t see any sign of repentance from Solomon in the historical books we hear about the judgment we don’t hear about Solomon’s repentance in fact the end of Solomon’s reign looks pretty sad it won’t take time to read it but the rest of chapter 11 outlines various men who rise up against Solomon there’s hey Dad edomite resin of Damascus and jeroboam the son of me bat now Jeroboam you probably heard of he’s the one who’s going to lead the northern tribes he didn’t so much rise against Solomon as Solomon drove him away Jeroboam was an industrious man of Ephraim whom Solomon noticed and put over the forced labor he was a servant of Solomon the Prophet hi Jeff found Jeroboam took a cloak you can see it depicted here and he towards his cloak into 12 pieces and he gave 10 of the pieces to Jeroboam as a sign of God’s impending judgment on Solomon’s kingdom God is going to give 10 tribes to Jeroboam to rule and he promised Jeroboam that if Jeroboam would obey the Lord God would establish his throne and his family and his seed god also reiterates that God will leave one tribe to Solomon and to David’s line because of the covenant with David and because of Jerusalem where the temple of God is may notice there’s a little bit of an oddity with the numbers ten tribes to Jeroboam one tribe to David where’s the 12th tribe does anybody know if Benjamin Benjamin ends up being actually being split between the northern and southern kingdoms that’s why sometimes confusing will be here Benjamin being with Judah and sometimes it it talks about only one tribe being with the David’s line but Benjamin appears to have been split partly with Judah partly with the rest of the tribes of Israel so Jeroboam receives this prophecy by way of an object lesson but apparently this ceremony didn’t stay private because Solomon reacts to Jeroboam looked down her 1st Kings 11 verse 40 it says right after with this whole prophecy Solomon sought therefore to put Jeroboam to death but Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt to shoe shack king of Egypt and he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon Solomon tried to kill him no sign that he actually rebelled but Solomon heard about this prophecy and Solomon tried to kill him I man is acting like whom again so exacting just like Saul so not a very positive end to Solomon’s great rain we see God’s prophecy of judgment though mitigated by God’s kindness on the house of David but let’s see now how the judgment comes to pass this is the last part of our lesson today look at first Kings chapter 12 when we’ll look at verses 1 to 20 mostly just reading this will make some observations at this point Solomon is dead he’s rain for 40 years same amount of time is David a long reign a blessed rain his son Rehoboam is now king now let’s hear about what happens next verse 1 chapter 12 then Rehoboam went to Shechem for all Israel had come to check him to make him King now when jeroboam the son and even heard of it he was living in Egypt where he was yet in Egypt where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon then they sent and called him and Jeroboam and all the assembly vigil came and spoke to Rehoboam saying your father made our yoke hard now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and it’s heavy yoke which he put on us we will serve you and he said to them depart from me for three days and return to me to the people to party kingway bum consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon while he was still alive saying how do you counsel me to answer this people and they spoke to him saying if you will be a servant to this people today and will serve them and grant them their petition and speak good words to them they will be your servants forever but he forsook the Council of the elders which they had given him and consulted with the young man who grew up with him and served him so he said to them what counsel do you give that we answer this people who have spoken me saying lighten the yoke which your father put on us the young man who grew up with him spoke time saying thus how you shall say to this people who spoke to you saying your father made our yoke heavy now you make it lighter for us but you shall speak to them my little finger is thicker than my father’s loins whereas my father loaded you with a heavy yoke I will add to your yoke my father disciplined you with the whips but I will discipline you with scorpions then Jeroboam and all the people came to ray bomb on the third day zynga directed saying returning me on the third day the King answered the people harshly for he forsook the advice the elders which they had given him and he spooked them according to the advice the young men saying my father made your yoke heavy but i will add to your yoke my father disciplined you with whips but I will discipline you with scorpions so the king did not listen to the people for it was a turn of events from the Lord that he might establish his word which the Lord spoke through a hide to the shona night to jeroboam the son Danny bad when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them the people answered the King saying what portion do we have in David we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse to your tent so Israel now look after your own house David so as you’ll departed to their tents but as for the sons of visual who lived in the cities of judah raya boehm reigned over them then King ray bomb sent a Durham who was over the forced labour and all israel stone him to death in King Rehoboam made haste amount of chariot to flee to Jerusalem so Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day it came about when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned that they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel none but the tribe of Judah followed the house of David some quick observations here who’s present at this coordination of Ray bone yeah all Israel it says and they’re being represented by whom you’re speaking on their behalf Jeroboam they’ve called back Jeroboam or he’s come back and he they respect him they like him they want him to speak to Solomon on their behalf now what requests are they making the new king lighten the burden lighten our burden sulman made our yolks difficult to bear he made our lives hard Salman really you did that he was again oppressing the people to enrich himself and they asked for this oppression to cease make things easier for us rebel I’m asked for time to consider the request and he seeks counsel wise move you can souls for the older men who served and probably learned wisdom from Solomon and what do they say to answer grant their request and speak kindly to them no sirve here they’ll be grateful and this would only be right considering what song is it was wrong so a king ought to say my father he oppressed you I’m gonna end that oppression but Ray Boehm didn’t like their advice and he asked his young friends how to answer and they give the opposite they say reject the request and speak to them harshly in other words show yourself tough make them fear you don’t posture yourself like some kind of servants make them tremble but God shows that the best kind of King is a shepherd it is one who gently leads one of the reasons that Deuteronomy 17 says a king should read out the law all the time as we mentioned some moments ago is that Deuteronomy 17 20 his that his heart may not be lifted up above his countrymen king of Israel is God’s anointed but he’s a shepherd and a steward not a god the people are not really there to serve him the king is a servant to the people to answer harshly and to continue oppression or even to make a depression worth worse is both wicked that’s not what God designed his Kings to do and it’s foolish since it will dishearten once followers and make them more prone to abandon your kingdom but that’s the foolish answer that Ray bomb chose but the text tells us why why according to the text it was a turn of events from the Lord it was to fulfill what God prophesied through a hijack God caused this to happen so at the harsh answer ten and a half tribes to seed the king sends a magistrate in charge of the forced labor to the disgruntled Israelites and they promptly stone him to death a curious move from a bomb I guess he really didn’t believe that Israel meant what they said it says in verse 19 at Israel the northern tribes remained in rebellion against Judah going forward indeed for the rest of the Old Testament history books the kingdom’s are split and often at war with each other her a poem actually begins this war or sought to begin this war he rallies an army it’s not mentioned here but right afterwards he rallies an army to force the northern tribes back into the kingdom but God disperses the armies he says this is from me do not fight against your brethren so God’s Word of judgment against Solomon’s sin but also the merciful corollary they come to pass just as God said before we consider application just one interpreter question that bring up here who’s responsible for Rayo booms foolish answer to Israel is a god or is it ray bomb responsibility remains with Raya boom even though we’re told this turn of events was from the Lord as we’ve said many times God is in complete control but man bears complete responsibility for his actions Raya bones answer was wicked and it was what he wanted and therefore Raya bomb deserves the blame and punishment but Rahab oh man was also determined by God nothing happens unless God ordains it God is not the author of sin nor sea tempter yet God directed for this to happen any time a government makes a foolish or wicked decision even our own government the people in government Baird the responsibilities of their choice God will judge them for it yet God determines things to happen exactly as they do so that we can take comfort that God’s purposes are being worked out no matter the foolishness or wickedness of our governments so ray bone was responsible even though God was in complete control this is where our narrative ends today we’ve actually hit an important milestone in our course with the divided Kingdom which would be happening around 975 bc according to Answers in Genesis or 9 31 BC according to MacArthur we passed the halfway point of the Earth’s life span more than 3,000 years have gone by since creation we’re now moving into the second half of Earth’s life I’ve also I don’t know if you’ve noticed but we’re quickly moving through the Old Testament will already add the divided Kingdom don’t look now but we only have two quarters left a little bit more than two quarters and then it’s the New Testament so we’re moving right along coming up will be tracing the dejected of the divided Kingdom the Northern Kingdom the ten and a half tribes in the north and the southern kingdom will be looking at various kings prophets how God brings armies against these nations ultimately bring them into captivity and then returns them from captivity and allows many to come back to the land but that’s all ahead well let’s finish our time today by looking at some application questions first how did the actions of Solomon and Ray Obama expose their sin of unbelief yeah they they just don’t obey God’s Word therefore they don’t believe God they don’t believe his promises Solomon violates the prohibitions against kingly action Raya bomb seeks to impress the people instead of do good to the people as God’s King is designed and in all these situations they refuse God’s counsel and they trust in man’s Council either their own were counselors that they like yeah yeah here by Shea I mean just briefly trying to capsulate some of what you were saying it wasn’t that horses or wealth or gold and silver were evil in themselves is that God was I’d be good to them trying to protect them from folly trying to protect them from their own their own weakness but they decided I think God’s holding me back from something good the same same as Adam Eve right they questioned whether God was actually being good to them whether he was holding out on them something good and they acted foolishly and then went they went right along with their fleshly impulses a set of by a bang by faith along the same lines let’s explore a little bit of how this plays out for us Solomon was warned that having wise from other nations would be a snare and lead him to worship false gods that is idols what are some of the things in our society that we can find ourselves toying with and unbelief thinking that it will bring us something good pleasure rather than destruction what’s one thing politics okay can you explain a little bit hmm yeah putting too much faith in politics either entering it or following it it can be really distracting there as many of you know there’s a there has been a movement among Christians to be really involved in politics as if if we could just change the government then that we can do good for God’s kingdom and where we have small ability to influence the government through voting that that’s fine but so quickly when we start getting involved in politics it consumes us and we’re not able to proclaim the gospel we end up compromising just as you said rich because if you’re going to succeed in politics well you need to do these certain things but a Christian can’t do those things so yeah getting involved in politics is over the involved in politics is a way to toy with what is unprofitable and sinful yeah yeah the materialism taking on a number of things gaining a lot of wealth gathering up a lot of treasures for yourself you are prone I am prone to the same temptation of Solomon you say oh I don’t feel like this is going to draw me away but as one writer said well there’s a gravity to wealth the more you accumulate the more it kind of pulls you and you start thinking about it you start being concerned about it you want to keep it you want to acquire more of it that’s why it’s good for us as Christians to make sure that we’re freely divesting our wealth for God’s kingdom God does give wealth but not so we can hoard it or so we can indulge ourselves it’s so that we can use it as good stewards so yeah materialism is another one we’re running short on time so I’ll just mention a few others this is good for us to keep thinking about though objectionable content movies especially sexuality and nudity say oh that’s not going to affect me it’s like what a god say don’t even expose yourself to it certain jobs that it’s long line of politics certain jobs where we’re going to be tempted in particular to dishonor God or to lie dating relationships with unbelievers oh you know I just want to be a witness to this person but you end up getting more and more entangled and then you say well maybe it is okay if I get married to that person same thing with ungodly company saying oh these hang out with these friends who who don’t don’t love the Lord that’s not really going to affect me objects or activities that we know will consume us if we start to get involved with them and more things and we’ve got some more application questions we don’t have time to really go through them there there’s a good parallel between the consequences of rainbooms actions for all of Israel for the centuries later and the consequences we experience from Adam you’re saying that’s not fair he did something and I suffer the consequences of it that’s just life it’s not about fairness or unfairness just about what is we benefit from some things that people who came before us and we also suffer for some of the things that people came before us that’s just the way it is but in Christ we can have a great great benefit there’s a there’s a point here to be made about not trusting in governments we always look to a new leader oh he’s gonna fix things so he’s gonna fix things he’s going to make everything better no every leader fails the Old Testament just a series of failures by nations by leaders even good leaders they they never come through all the way but Jesus will and we can look forward to his kingdom and his vindication because he will come through all the way for his people I gave her the questions or comments see me afterwards next week we’re talking about Jonah yep it’s already that time that’s right father this is a sobering word god it’s so difficult we know father because things in the world can be so pleasant and yet you warn us you say if you get involved with that it will be a snare to you God your way is better we know that your word is true you don’t lie about anything so whatever it takes god whatever snares that need to be removed whatever practices whatever ideas need to be given up so we can keep ourselves away from sin what we will do it help us to do it by ear forgive us for our sins for where we have flirted with so many unprofitable sinful and foolish things let us take to heart Solomon’s cautionary tale a man who could speak wisdom and yet not even follow with himself what I pray that you bless the rest of the service today in Jesus name Amen you
