    God Judges Judah

Answers Bible Curriculum Year 2 Quarter 3 Lesson 11

This week in Sunday school, we finally look at God’s judgment on Judah. What were the three stages of Judah’s fall and Jerusalem’s destruction? How did the Babylonians treat the Judeans in the conquest? What are the implications of Judah’s judgment for us today? We’ll look at these questions and more.

The main scriptures we will be considering in this week’s lesson are 2 Kings 23:25-25:22 and 2 Chronicles 36:11-21.

in the history history of the world and certainly the history of Israel for nearly 900 years at land of Canaan belonged to the people of Israel and then the Kingdom of Israel even the kingdom is vut of Israel and Judah that land was given by God to the Israelites to be Atlanta blessing as they followed the Lord but the people did not follow the Lord and as God promised and his covenant with Israel their land became cursed and the people were removed from the land and the kingdom was dissolved first the kingdom of israel was removed what nation removed them and when did they do so the Assyrian Empire that’s right and close or in the 700 area does anybody remember the date for the fall of Samaria usually given to be 722 BC 722 BC the end of the Northern Kingdom and the fall of Samaria by the Assyrians now Israel’s removal was to be a lesson to Judah who was called Israel sister but according to Jeremiah and his prophecy that we looked at last week what did you two do in response to the judgment on Israel yeah they didn’t repent in fact at least the way the Jeremiah lays it out instead of becoming more righteous they became less righteous they actually learned from Israel’s wickedness rather than Israel’s judgment and they became just as wicked and idolatrous as Israel God sent Jeremiah has a prophet to warn Judah then of judgment if she did not repent but Judah did not listen to Jeremiah so the judgment that Jeremiah prophesied came to pass and that’s the subject of our lesson today God judges Judah Judah and Jerusalem did not fall all at once however it happened in stages and we’re going to explore precisely what happened in today’s class here’s our outline we’re going to do an activity called the three steps of destruction we’re going to track the three phases of Judas fall then we’re going to examine again or we’re going to examine how Judah even in this judgment this tiered judgment this different phase judgment resisted repentance and then we’ll consider application for our lives today that’s right I gotta pay that you give me the ability ability to explain this well and to speak clearly I pray that your spirit will work in the hearts of everyone who hears today moment that we would understand what you want us to understand you wrote this for the people of Judah but also for us so we pray God that your spirit would do the work that’s necessary today in Jesus name Amen if you have your student guys please open to page 85 where you’re going to find the activity that we’re going to do for the majority of our class today so page 85 for less than 11 if you don’t have your book that’s okay you can use the use a blank space in a bulletin or just follow along immensely the activity is based on second Kings 23 to 25 where we’re going to find one of the accounts of Judas fall so while you open up your activity books too your student guides to page 85 please open your Bibles to 2nd Kings 23 second Kings 23s on page 4 11 if you’re using the Bible’s in the pew so page 4 11 in the button the few Bible and page 85 in the student guide and here’s what we’re going to do in this activity we’re going to read about the last five kings of Judah and we’re going to observe certain pieces of information first we want to find out how long did each King rain and then correlate that length of rain with dates establish some dates for the different kings of Judah who are raining and we’ll be using Answers in Genesis timeline for that they’ll give us a little anchor so we can base the rest of our dates then we’re going to ask what acts are recorded for this king of Judah what did he do and then finally who oppressed Judah under that particular King and what did that nation do to Judah and to its King so how long the beach King rain and when was that what did the acts of the king that are recorded who oppressed the king and the kingdom during his reign and what did that nation do those three pieces of information and there’s places for those in your notes in the student guide we’re going to start with Josiah the fifth to last king this is the preliminary phase of Judas destruction you’re just an actually not being destroyed yet but this is almost in preparation for that so we find the record of Judah and second Josiah and second Kings 23 I’m not going to read the whole thing about him we’re actually just going to start in verse 25 and will read to verse 30 but before we do that second Kings 22 verse 1 says that ders I arraigned 31 years and estrogen Genesis tells us that he died in 6 10 BC so if he reigned 31 years and died in 610 bc i remember bc gets closer and closer to 0 when did his reign begin 641 bc 641 bc now it could have been 640 bc and depending on if we count all of 610 or all of 641 or all of 640 so there is some wiggle room there but 641 is a good date for the start of Josiah’s rain also just so you know the line of Kings before Josiah so you know where he comes in in that order there was Hezekiah hey we remember him Great King righteous King and after Hezekiah Manasseh his son one of the most wicked Kings ever then his son Amon who was also evil and then Jersey so you’ve had two extremely wicked kings right before Josiah and for him Hezekiah one of the most righteous all right now let’s learn about Josiah second Kings 23 verse 25 to 30 before him there was no king like him who turned to the Lord with all his heart with all his soul with all his might according to all the law of Moses wouldn’t any like him her eyes after him whatever the Lord did not turn from the fierceness of his great wrath with which his anger burned against Judah because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked him the Lord said I will remove Judah also from my sight as I have removed Israel now will cast off Jerusalem this city which I’ve chosen and a temple at which I said my name shall be there now the rest of the acts of Josiah and all that he did are they not written in the book of The Chronicles the kings of Judah and his days Pharaoh Niko king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates in King Josiah went to meet him and when Pharaoh Nico saw him he killed him at Megiddo his servants drove his body in a chariot from Megiddo and brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb and the people the land took Jehovah has the son of josiah and anointed him and made him king in place of his father okay let’s fill in the information for our activity what do we learn about the acts of josiah he was a righteous king and in the section we didn’t read right before we see he’s actually trying to reform Israel he’s trying to restore proper worship and I’m sorry Judith trying to restore proper worship and Judah you did what was right but what else did he do that’s what in the section that we read i went up to fight against someone do you go up to fight against i wanted to fight against pharaoh pharaoh Nico it says he went to meet him but the idea is he went to fight him second chronicles gives us a little bit more information about that set up they fought at Megiddo bible does not tell us why Josiah went to fight him because actually Egypt was not targeting Judah it was actually on its way up to Assyria to assist the Syria against Babylon and in chronicles we actually learned that Pharaoh Nico before the battle says your diet don’t fight me I’m not I don’t have any issue with you I’m going somewhere else but Joe’s I insistant desires killed by the way the battle that Egypt and Assyria are about to have with Babylon is the Battle of charge mishe anybody remember the results of that battle Babylon in the Syria versus Parma sorry syrian egypt vs Babylon Assyria is crushed and they’re basically annihilated as an empire and Edith is defeated along with them but anyways Nico’s on his way to that fight shows I along the way in josiah’s killed so who’s it then who’s oppressing Judah during Josiah’s rain or does harm to Judah during those eyes rain Rico by killing the king and by fighting against josiah so we have an information here when he reigned what he did who impressed Judah that would be Egypt by defeating Judah in battle and killing King Josiah alright that’s it for Josiah let’s now look at the reign of Josiah son Jehovah has and we’re going to find the information for him in second Kings 23 verses 31 to 34 now this is still the preliminary stage see what second Kings tells us Jehovah has was 23 years old when he became king and he reigned three months in Jerusalem and his mother’s name was Hammett all the daughter daughter of Jeremiah of live nuh he did evil in the sight of the Lord according to all that his father’s had done Pharaoh Nico imprisoned him Riblet in the land of him up he might not rain in Jerusalem and he imposed on the land a fine of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold fro Niko made a like him the son of josiah king in the place of Josiah his father and changed his name to Jehovah Kim but he took Jehovah has away and brought him to Egypt and he died there ok not a great rain for this next king let’s observe some information how long did Jehovah has reign three months so we’re looking for dates if he started in 610 he probably ended in 610 what did we learn about what he did he did evil in the sight of the Lord the only thing that’s really recorded about him he did evil just like his father’s did we still have Ana pressure of judo during this period who’s the oppressor it’s still Egypt he’s actually following up on his victory over Josiah and what does Nico due to a press Judah yeah he imposes a tribute remember let’s see 100 challenge of silver in a town of gold or roughly 7,500 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold so pretty hefty tribute impose upon the people what else yeah he imprisoned Jehovah has and he set up another king he sets up a like him whom he renames Jehovah kim takes the imprison came back to Egypt now notice now in this preliminary phase before Judas destruction really begins its Egypt he was oppressing Judah but that’s going to change the first phase of Judah’s actual destruction begins under the next king Jehoiachin by the way what is significant about the king of egypt renaming ally akin yeah Roy right so ultimately it is about establishing dominance in Judah any time a king is deposed and another king is put in his place by another nation that’s to keep the loyalty of that King like hey I raised you up so you owe me and but the name change itself is part of the symbol of authority you remember even in the Gospels Jesus changed changes the name of Pete Peters all the time he says now you’ll be called Peter and various times in the Bible we have people being renamed Jacob is called Israel Abraham is renamed all those things are actually especially in that culture a signup Authority number adam he had authority over the animals he named them when person is renamed the person naming is the one showing i have authority over you and so alive him is under the authority of Egypt joy his name is changed to Jehovah Kim alright so we’ve seen what happened to Jehovah has let’s now look at the first step of Judas destruction under Jehovah Kim okay so second Kings 23 we learn about him at second Kings 23 verses 35 to chapter 24 verse 7 so let’s read that verse thirty-five twenty-three so Jehovah Kim gave the silver and gold to Pharaoh but he taxed land in order to give the money at the command of Pharaoh exactly the silver and gold from the pupil the land each according to his valuation to give it to Pharaoh Niko Jehovah Kim was 25 years old when he became king and he reigned 11 years in Jerusalem and his mother’s name was evide the daughter of padilla of rumah he did evil in the sight of the Lord according to all that his father’s had done and his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up and Jehovah King became a servant for three years then he turned and rebelled against him the Lord sent against him bands of Chaldeans bands ver means bands Moabites and bands of nice so we sent them against Judah to destroy it according to the word of the Lord which he had spoken through his servants the prophets surely at the command of the Lord came upon Judah to remove them from his sight because of the sins of a NASA according to all that he had done and also for the innocent blood which he had shed very kit for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood and the Lord would not forgive now the rest of the act of Jehovah came and all that he did are they not written in the book The Chronicles of the kings of Judah so Joachim slept with his father’s enjoyed jeho wed kin his son became king in this place I thought it was chin by the way it’s Joachim so jahovic and his son became king this place oh one other note here the king of Egypt did not come out of his land again but the king of Babylon had taken all that belonged to the king of Egypt from the brook of Egypt to the river Euphrates ok let’s gather information on jaha Kim’s ring how long did he reign 11 years so he started in 610 when did his reign end 599 and there could be some wiggle room depending on what what part of the year he started but 6 10 2 599 bc what did Hakim do Eric who’s I he did Eve on the side of the Lord what else did he do okay later on he becomes subject to Nebuchadnezzar to Babylon but doesn’t stay subject he also rebels and we should note he pays tribute to Egypt after after he had been installed as king by Egypt he does also pay tribute to Egypt we see two oppressors in this section one of them kind of fades away Egypt is still imposing the tribute but then it’s babylon babylon is the main oppressor what is it that Babylon does to repress Judah well before against that will get a little bit more specific information if we turn to a parallel passage just for a moment turn over to Daniel chapter one because it says in our past is that Babylon came up what does that mean well daniel is going to clarify that for us so daniel chapter one and we’ll read verses 1 to 4 right after Ezekiel is Daniel there it is ok page 8 81 in the pew Bible here’s what daniel says in chapter 1 verses 1 to 4 and the third year of the reign of jehovah keem king of Judah Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it Lord gave to Hakeem king of Judah into his hand along with some of the vessels of the house of God and he brought them to the land of Shinar to the house of his God and he brought the vessels into the Treasury of his God then the king ordered ashburn ask chief of his officials to bring in some of the sons of Israel including some of the royal family and of the nobles youths in whom was no defect were good-looking showing intelligence and every branch of wisdom and down with understanding and discerning knowledge wettability for serving in the king’s court and he ordered him to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans ok so Daniel tells us that Jerusalem was besieged in the third year of Jehovah came by Babylon what year bc would that be if he starts his reign in 610 just be three years later 607 six or seven bc now Jehovah Keim’s defeated in this siege and he becomes subject to Babylon but he’s not the post he’s allowed to stay there he just has to now be subject to Babylon and not Egypt what spoils of victory did Nebuchadnezzar take back to Babylon it took some of the treasures of the house of Lord doesn’t say you took all them or that he scraped the gold off the doors or anything like that just said took some of the treasures but he also took something else what else is DJ he took some young men from what sector of society the most skilled those from the royal family and those from noble families so taking some of the sons of the great men and some of the those who showed ability they take some back to Babylon and trains them for his court so we see Babylon doing a couple of different things that that are all oppressing Judah this is the first time that captives are being taken out of Judah into a foreign land so technically this is the first time that Judah is in exile or at least part of Judah is next I’ll the captivity is beginning here in 607 bc Babylon invade and subjects King Jehovah Keem take some vessels from the house of God and take some of the best and noble sons from Judah now Jehovah keem is subject for three years but then he rebelled so if he was subject from 607 that means he rebels in 604 and when Jehovah Keim’s reign ends is Judah in subjection or in rebellion to Babylon in 599 is Judah in rebellion or in subjection all he rebelled in 604 and we don’t have any other record of Babylon invading Andrey subjecting him and he must still be in rebellion when Jehovah King dies the kingdom of Judah is still in rebellion against Babylon it passes on that rebellion to a son jahovic in so we have the information for Jehovah Kim’s rain any questions so far okay so this is phase one and gruesome destruction first time that treasures and people are taken captive and it’s by Babylon that happened in 607 bc but now we go to phase two judgment step to go back to second Kings 24 please this next stage happens under Jehovah Jehovah kins rain let’s read about his reign in second Kings 24 8 to 17 Jehovah ken was 18 years old when he became king and he reigned three months in Jerusalem and his mother’s name was knew who shot the daughter of elnathan of Jerusalem he did evil in the sight of the Lord according to all that his father had done that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon went up to Jerusalem and the city came under siege and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon came to the city while his servants were besieging it jahovic in the king of judah went out to the king of Babylon he and his mother and his servants and his captains and his officials the king of Babylon took him captive in the eighth year of his reign that’s a Nebuchadnezzar’s rain it carried out from there all the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s house and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold with Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple the Lord just as the Lord had said then he led away into exile all Jerusalem and all the captains and all the mighty men of valor 10,000 captives and all the craftsmen and the Smiths none remained except the poorest people of the land so he led jahovic in a way into exile to babylon also the kings they’re in the Kings wives and his officials and a leading men of the land they led away into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon all them in a valor 7,000 and the craftsmen in the smiths 1,000 all strong and fit reward and these the king of Babylon brought into exile to babylon then the king of Babylon made his uncle mattaniah king in his place and changed his name to Zedekiah ok let’s no no information on Jehovah King how long did Jehovah can reign three months another three month or so again if he started in 599 he probably finished in 599 what were his acts recorded here he did evil the side of the Lord he also did one other thing when Nebuchadnezzar procedures Jerusalem what is Jehovah can do he surrenders says you went out to him with his royal family and all that kind of them he surrendered to Babylon and he was spared but he was taken captive now Babylon is again the one oppressing Judah but let’s know what Babylon the specific things that Babylon does this time see that it invades Judah and the siege of Jerusalem ultimately successful because because Jehovah came surrenders but what else does Babylon do yeah that’s right so now unlike the first invasion we have most of the treasures being taken away all of the gold items all the most important treasures in the temple are taken but not just the temple also the treasures of the royal palace those are taken and as you mentioned Eric the best people are taken it says all the people Jerusalem men a valor the commander’s the the Kings royal family the great men that would be the nobility they’re taking all the best people out of the land just leaving the poor all the Temple treasures all the world treasures are taken all the great men all the skilled men are taken and then because the King’s captive installs a new king mattaniah who’s Jehovah kins uncle and he changes his name gantz I’m Authority changes his name to Zedekiah by the way if Zedekiah is Joe Atkins uncle that means that he’s Jehovah Kim’s brother and whose son he’s Josiah son because a memory Jehovah has when he was deposed the one replaced the one who replaced him was another son of design so it wasn’t there who has a son he’s actually Josiah some so we see phase 2 a Judas destruction much more has been taken this time the exile has increased dramatically that the captivity has increased but Judas still has a king king in the line of David it’s still a kingdom and all many people have gone the best people have gone there are still many Judeans living in the land at the poor people but now we come to Judas final king and the final phase of Judas destruction this is under Zedekiah’s and we’ll read about him in a longer section from chapter 24 verse 18 to chapter 25 verse 22 starting in verse 18 Zedekiah was 21 years old when he became king and he reigned 11 years in Jerusalem and his mother’s name was ham we call the daughter Jeremiah of live now he did evil on the side of the Lord according to all that Jehovah Kim had done for through the anger of the Lord this came about in Jerusalem and Judah until he cast them out from his presence and Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon and when the ninth year of his reign on the tenth day of the tenth month Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came he and all his army against Jerusalem camped against it and built a siege wall all around it so the city was under siege until the 11th year of King Zedekiah on the ninth day of 4th month the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land then the city was broken into an all men of war fled by night by wave the gate between the two walls beside the King’s garden though the chaldeans were all around the city and they went by way of the Arabic but the army the Chaldeans pursued the King overtook him in the plains of Jericho and all his army was scattered from him then they captured a king and brought him to the king of Babylon at rib LA and he passed sentence on him they slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes then put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him with bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon now on the seventh day of the fifth month which was the 15th year of King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon New boos era Dan the captain of the guard a servant of the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem he burned the house of the Lord the King’s house and all the houses of Jerusalem even every great house he burned with fire so all the army of the Chaldeans were with the captain the guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem then the rest of people who were left in the city and the deserters were deserted to the king of Babylon and the rest of the people me boos era tan the captain of the guard carried away into exile but cats on the guard left some of the poorest of the land to be vine dressers and Plowman now the bronze pillars which were in the house is Lord and the stands and the bronze see which were in the house of Lord the Chaldeans broken pieces and carried the bronze to Babylon they took away the pots the shovels the snuffers the spoons and all the bronze vessels which were used in temple service the captain the guard also took away the fire pans in the basement what was fine gold what was fine silver the two pillars the one see in the stands with Solomon had made for the house of the Lord the bronze of all these vessels would be on weight the height of the one pillar was 18 cubits and a bronze capitals on it behind the capital was three cubits with a network and pomegranate some on the capital all around all of bronze and the second pillar was like these but network and then then the captain the guard took Soraya the chief priests and zephaniah the second priest with the three officers of the temple from the city he took one official who was overseer of the men of war and five of the Kings advisors who were found in the city and ascribe with the captain in the army who mustered the people of land and sixty men of the people the land were found in the city News Erin and the captain the guard took them and brought them to the king of Babylon a trib la then the king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death every blow and the math so Judah was led away into exile from its land master the people who were left in the land of the land of Judah whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left you pointed get a lie at the son of a he can the son of shape Minh over them I think we’ll just stop right there okay let’s observe this final king and final phase how long does that a kiyah rain 11 years so if he started in a 599 one that his reign end 588 5a dapc now when people give a date for the fall of Jerusalem it’s usually 588 or 587 sometimes even 586 BC what did Zedekiah do in his reign he did evil on the side of the Lord what else did he do he rebelled against Babylon and when the siege had reached its climax and the famine was intolerable what else did he do he tried to escape he fled he and his army made a hole in the wall and they fled for their lives Babylon’s the oppressor again what is it that Babylon does this time well we know that they’ve invaded they’ve responded to the rebellion by invading and besieging Jerusalem again this is the third time that Jerusalem is besieged when the King tries to escape what is Babylon do they catch him they overtake him they defeat him his army scatters and then what do they do our problem oh oh hang on to that question then what they do they slaughter his sons before his eyes and then they put out his eyes so the last thing he saw was his sons being killed and those would be his heirs right they’d be the next one’s on the throne they’re all killed for him what else they do they burn all the houses of Jerusalem Jerusalem is basically raised the whole city is burned it becomes a ruin and they break down the wall and when a city doesn’t have a wall it’s very hard to rebel because they can easily be overtaken by an arm the walls broken down temples destroyed and all the houses are burned what else happens what else is Babylon do right they leave some the poor of the land has agricultural workers but what do they do with the rest right those who weren’t killed and we’re going to see in a moment that many of them were killed survivors and deserters were taken to Babylon so it’s the third group of captives that’s taken away and as you said Rob some of the poor were allowed to remain that’s vine dressers and Plowman and basically they’d be servants to whomever Nebuchadnezzar brought into the land there are still some treasures left that Babylon takes away any gold and silver implements that were left in the temple where that were remade after the last ones were taken they were taken and now even the bronze is taken the bronze elements of the temple the various implements the pillars all that’s taken away and then some of the officials and priests who were there under Zedekiah are also brought before Nebuchadnezzar and what happens to them they’re executed these officials had participated in rebellion so I have a cognizer have executed them and now there’s no longer a king in Judah but instead what a vassal the term here is a governor there’s a governor appointed the kingdom is over now this land is administered by a governor of Babylon from the people of Judah but a governor not a king so this is the final phase of Jerusalem our Judas destruction it’s now complete the kingdom is gone though there are a few poor jidian still left in the land the land is devastated Jerusalem is devastated the the city and as temple are ruins and almost all the Judeans who aren’t killed we weren’t killed are in exile in Babylon this is exactly what God promised would happen it’s exactly what God warned Judah would happen you remember that word from Isaiah where God says just like the rain falls on the ground my word will go forth and it will accomplish whatever i sent it to do exactly what we’re seeing here he says I said that it would fall I said that your that your city would be destroyed and the temp will be made of ruin and look my word came to pass it doesn’t fail my word always accomplishes whatever I send it out to do God brought it to pass so let’s summarize the three steps of Judah’s destruction just to keep this all clear in your mind phase one that was in six or seven bc when jerusalem is first deceived under Jehovah Kim the whole Cain was defeated Judah was forced to become subject to Babylon but the king was allowed to remain and only some of the spoils and some exiles were taken some of the noble sons in phase 2 or step 2 that was in 599 bc under jahovic in where Jerusalem was again besieged jockin surrenders Babylon sets up a new king takes much spoil takes all the great men the soldiers in the skilled craftsmen to Babylon and also takes King Jehovah King to Babylon to be a prisoner and then finally step 3 phase 3 that’s in 588 PC Zedekiah’s defeated by Babylon the king’s sons and his officials are slow Jerusalem is completely destroyed any spoil left is taken any people left except for a few poor are taken into exile and there we have it Jerusalem the kingdom of Judah has been dissolved questions Ravi had a question okay yes AC first phase of Daniel right so yes rather do something but not even to do something like that they continue to rebuild or go in the face of ridiculous odds yeah let me see if I going to repeat your point just a little bit briefly but you see here the hand of God and bringing the judgment the people are continuing to rebel even though they have plenty of incentives not ravel I mean that’s the whole point of what the somewhat gentle responses from nebuchadnezzar after the first invasion yeah you can keep your king i’m just going to take some of you tried to some of your men don’t do it again like I I’ve done you good so if you want things to go well with you then stay subject and the same thing for when he appoints the next king you have an incentive to not rebel anymore but then finally there they’re annihilated because they rebel at their time and you do wonder what was the thought process behind rebelling what did they think they could do against Babylon but maybe they thought hey we’re the people of God we’ve got the Lord on our side we can win even though they weren’t following the Lord and so it was a false confidence but in that your point Roy about how God intended to bring this judgment and that’s partly why they were so stubborn and why he allowed them to ravel like this the text emphasizes that and we render right kept saying like the Lord was determined to judge Judah for all the sins of a nasa in front and for the sins of the people and so we actually see that the hardness of Judah’s heart was itself a judgment of God that allowed his full judgment to come to pass we’ll see more about that in just a moment Danny you were interesting something oh yeah yeah I was about to say something about that in just a moment but you’re right except for God’s mercy and God’s covenants this would be the end we would never heard of Judah or they just be a historical footnote like oh there was this one king of Babylon just steamrolled and when they rebelled they were annihilated it would be a very very tragic end what a sad story the people of God are no more because they rebelled against it of course that’s not the end of the story well say more about that in just a second other questions so in case you’re wondering and a little bit more exploring what Roy was saying was Judah doomed from the start when the judgment began under Egypt and Babylon was there no hope would God have relented of judgment if the people in the King repented perhaps you already haven’t answered that question but to fill in a little bit more of that let’s look at the parallel account from chronicles of the Last King Zedekiah go to 2nd chronicles 36 are you going to say something doing yeah yeah um I don’t know full address that specifically but yeah even if they were just paying close attention to the law they would know that there was always hope they repented because even when they’re in exile God says when you repent I’ll bring you back but let’s see what second chronicles 3611 the 21 says because we get a kind of a different perspective on the fall of Jerusalem under Zedekiah and what was given in Kings a little bit more focus on the spiritual aspect rather than just the historical details so look at verse 11 Zedekiah was 21 years old when he became king and he reigned 11 years in Jerusalem he did evil on the side the Lord his God he did not humble himself before jeremiah the prophet who spoke for the Lord he also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar who had made him swear allegiance by God but he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord God of Israel furthermore all the officials of the priests and the people were very unfaithful following all the abominations of the nations and they defied the house of the Lord which hits sanctified in Jerusalem the Lord the god of their fathers sent word to them again and again by his messengers because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place but they continually mocked the messengers of God despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people until there was no remedy therefore he brought up against him the king of the Chaldeans who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion on young man virgin old man or infirm he gave them all into his hand all the articles of the house is God great and small and the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king and of his officers he brought them all to Babylon then they burned the house is gone and broke down the wall Jerusalem and burned all its fortified buildings with fire and destroyed all its Bible articles those would escape from the sword he carried away to Babylon and they were servants to him to do his servants to him into a to the rule of the kingdom of persia to fulfill the word of the lord by the mouth of jeremiah until the land had enjoyed its Sabbath’s all the days of its desolation it kept Sabbath until 70 years were complete ok we won’t observe this in detail but notice even in the times of judgment what were the King priests and people doing refusing to turn to God they were stubborn in their wickedness they refused to humble themselves before the Lord but the prophets were there Jeremiah was there telling them turn back to the Lord and if they did it’s implied in that statement and known for the other scriptures things would have turned out differently there wouldn’t have been this devastation maybe the kingdom of Judah couldn’t have been saved but maybe could have been spared for another generation or maybe there wouldn’t have been as much devastation in the city or as many lives lost God certainly as we saw with Nineveh and Jonah God relents and judgment when his people or when people repent there was hope if they only turned but they would not so God brought the judgment and by the way you notice here not everyone made it into exile notice verse 17 again says that the young man was slain by the sword in the house of God the Babylonians had no compassion on anyone didn’t matter who you were a young man virgin old man or infirm people were brutalized there was mass death in Jerusalem by starvation by disease and by the sword so looking back at last week’s lesson when Jeremiah wet from what he called the slain of the daughter of his people he’s not being metaphorical or not just metaphorical he foresaw prophetically and then watched literally this country being slaughtered this was the judgment on sin now the Babel in brutality it points to a number of things it’s it is itself wickedness how God judges those who are brutal those were cruel those who those who murder and yet was also ordained by God as judgment he’s not responsible for the sin and yet he ordained it as part of his judgment on Judas in Babylonians would be judged for their wickedness and the Babylonians intended to make an example of Judah and Jerusalem you can see this from it from a human perspective and we’ve mentioned this before in classes rebels get the worst treatment because it’s to be a deterrent from others rebelling so Israel is gone Judah has gone to and they’re now strangers in a strange land where people speak a strange tongue and serve strange gods and this would be the one of the most tragic stories of it ended here certainly Judah deserve to have it end here Israel deserve to have it end here but it’s not where it ends and you can see right in verse 21 already hope is mentioned it says second chronicles 36 verse 21 the land would be devastated until what be desolate it would have its Sabbath the Sabbath of the people neglected to give to the land until what until 70 years we’re complete in fact if you just look below the Book of Chronicles does not end with Babylon Babylonian exile but with Persia and with the people returning from exile from the decree of Cyrus to go back and rebuild the temple God has not done all these people and this is such a sober account as we go through khana coals and we go through Kings we see the judgment brought it on Israel and Judah sin but God’s not done God’s not doing this people he has covenants with Abraham and David to keep his promises spoken by Moses Hosea Isaiah and Jeremiah to fulfill and one of the most immediate promises prophecies is from Jeremiah one we didn’t look at yet regarding 70 years there’s a prophecy about seven years that God is going to fulfill we’re actually gonna examine that next time before we close today let’s bring this to today why is this account important for us to know about to apply here’s some questions to get you thinking about that now and we can discuss this a little bit what does Judas fall teach us about God God you to sin and not just with the people out there right but even among those who call themselves his people you call yourself a Christian you call yourself a back then if you called yourself an Israelite a follower of God and yet you persist in sin you’re not shielded God will judge it if he was this severe with Judah in Israel why do you think will be any different with us God is holy God judges sin and yet we even saw that when the judgment came to Judah it came in phases and this was after the kingdom had been established for 500 years what does that also show us about God so merciful he’s so patient he’s so long suffering when we saw this also in Jeremiah last week we says I saw Israel acting like a harlot just continuing after her harlotry but I said she will return I won’t judge right she will return and she didn’t and God judged Israel and did the same thing with Judah I’ll give her time surely surely she would recognize the great evil that she is doing how could she not how could she not remember all the good that I’ve done she will turn back I’ll wait I’ll give her another chance but Judah didn’t drink back so God said my patience has its limit and god judge Judah but his patience was great and his patience is great the fact that if you’re believing today the fact that you were allowed to live and come to faith is God’s patience and God’s mercy the fact that the human race is exists in that America exists in the nation’s that exists today is God’s patience God’s mercy speaking of America and the other nations how are we in America or even just how are we as humans in the 21st century at all similar to Judah how are we similar yeah rebelling against rebelling against God yeah even though I think still the majority of Americans would confess what about God that they believe in it do they follow him they would call themselves Christians or at least believers in God and yes we are an idolatrous wicked nation and it’s not just America of course is the nations around the world many in those nations say that they are gone followers that they serve God some of them don’t some say they serve another God and yet every nation is so wicked an idolatrous so looking again to Judas example what else does that mean about America and the nations of the world today that God has and God will demonstrate those same attributes that he demonstrated with Judah patience I have been so patient with you America I’ve been so patient with you united kingdom I’ve been so patient with you Arabia and you know all the other nations in the world I’ve been so patient up with you and yet you persist in your wickedness in your on idolatry my wrath will come it will come on America it will come on all the nations of the world and that’s one of the things in the new the New Testament right God has ordained a man through whom he will judge the world he testified to all of dis man’s authority to do this by raising him from the dead Jesus Christ Jesus Christ will come in judgment and he will judge all the nations he will judge our nation ojo jocks we’re just like Judah a people who claims all of God a nation that claims to follow God but actually serves Isles and loves wickedness and just like Judah when that judgment comes there’s going to be a slaughter this isn’t like oh you know people are going to be suffering now it’s going to be destruction a bit with a spiritual the spiritual aspect we don’t think about things like sword or people literally dying but that is the way that Jesus coming is described he slays them with a suite of his mouth he calls all the birds together from all around the world he says feast feast on those who rebel against me and then I destroy our countrymen we ourselves if we don’t know Jesus we’re going to be experiencing that and but of course there’s another aspect of that judgment that’s the eternal one people not just be destroyed temporarily but forever suffering torment in hell it’s the price of sin wages of sin it’s what we earn but if you’re a believer you’re safe when the wrath of God and yet what has made you safe what is happened that makes you safe from God’s wrath yeah yeah that’s one way to answer it it’s because of Jesus Jesus is that shield he is that tower that you can go to and say save me from the holy wrath of God protects me cover me and Jesus is able Jesus does it you know that section in the end of Jesus Sermon on the Mount where we talk about the wise man builds his house on the rock foolish man build his house in the sand but sometimes think that’s about trials but it’s not it’s about judgment since you listen to my words and you act on them and the flood comes your house will be spared it’ll stand if you don’t house is going to be destroyed and great well its destruction be so that’s one way to answer it the reason you’re safe is because of Jesus work on the cross he died for your sins and yet how how do you gain and why doesn’t everyone what has happened right but you mentioned is by belief it’s not just that Jesus died and hey everybody’s okay now it’s those who have faith in Jesus those who believe in Jesus those who trust in Jesus those who repent and turn to Jesus they are the ones who are justified his righteousness has put on men their synesthete on him he totally cancels their debt of sin and his righteousness is infinite on them so of course God can’t judge them because they have the righteousness of Christ they’ve been justified they’ve been declared righteous so yes it’s by Jesus yes it’s my belief in Jesus and yet we can also answer the question by saying is because of God’s sovereign mercy because why do you believe in Jesus because God caused you to believe you didn’t have that in yourself God gave you the Fate God changed your heart he did what the new covenant of Jeremiah says he would do he wrote his law in your heart he caused you to seek him he caused you to repent so very accurate way for us to answer the question is why don’t we suffer the wrath of God it’s because God mercifully chose to spare us he chose to make us righteous and therefore protected from his wrath but how do you know whether that’s really true of you how do you know that you are one of that number that you were chosen by God that you were saved by belief in Christ and that you’ve actually repented of your sin how do you know that Dan exactly exactly yeah that’s one of the themes in the New Testament the way you know what you really stayed whether you really repented is you bear fruit of repentance you walk in righteousness you live a holy life you are a new creation the seed the supernatural seat of God is in you you crucified the old way or rather it was crucified with Christ on the cross so you don’t walk in your old pattern anymore do you say but but I prayed a prayer but I I hadn’t experienced or i have right doctrines you can have all those things and yet if you don’t have the fruit of repentance in your life you are not safe from the wrath of God because there are plenty of people who have believed right things you know the scripture even the demons believe that God is one and they shot her because they’re expecting the judgment of God or even more soberly I think from Hebrews he says for those who are once enlightened and yet persistence in no no longer remains an expectation of hope but of terrifying judgment don’t call yourself a Christian and then continue to walk and have it to sin and expect yourself to be safe Judah did the same thing it’s only those who repent who demonstrate that repentance by actually turning away from sin that can be confident of their inheritance in God I believe that’s one of the reasons why the Holy Spirit is described as a seal right a seal as a guarantee as you see the works of the holy spirit manifest in your life you know you’re going to receive the heavenly kingdom because the Holy Spirit’s working itself out in your life he’s the guarantee if you’re not seeing that in your life how can you be confident how do you know that you’re safe as a final expectation my brothers and sisters we know that God’s judgment is coming gods revealed that to us we’ve been exposed to it from his word a person faces judgment when he dies but Christ will bring the judgment for all when he comes to the earth so if we truly know Christ let us persevere and faith and holiness and in good deeds until Christ comes so that when he comes we will not receive wrath but reward that’s all our time if you have other questions or comments please see me afterwards that’s right God would recognize that this is a sober word you have for us this morning we don’t want to so quickly say oh I’m safe from God’s judgment because I’m a Christian God because we know that there are many will say we believed in you didn’t we do all these things but you will save them depart from me you who practice lawlessness I never knew you God let them not be true for anybody who’s here today please God be merciful by your spirit to change the heart to bring forth fruit the fruit of repentance to be true belief so they can be truly safe they can be truly justified so that the wrath will not come upon them but it will pass over that just as you were the Passover lamb now cause us to persevere calls us to be zealous for good deeds cause us to live holy Lord as we anticipate your coming in Jesus name Amen

    God Judges Israel

Answers Bible Curriculum Year 2 Quarter 3 Lesson 4

This week in our Answers Bible Curriculum Sunday school, we step back into the book of Kings to find out what happened to the northern kingdom of Israel. How were they judged? Why were they judged? What happened to the people who remained in the land? How are we supposed to be affected by God’s supernatural and historical record of these events? We’ll look at these questions and more.

all right well let’s get started good morning welcome to Sunday school we’re looking this week at the Fulfillment of God’s word as declared By His prophets to Israel God warned that if Israel persisted and it’s sinful Rebellion against him Israel would be conquered and then removed from her land and that’s what came to pass that’s what we’re looking at today title of our lesson is God judges Israel last week we heard from the prophet Hosea it’s a God command Hosea to do that’s right Mary Mary a wife of adultery and have children of adultery or where marry a wife of harlotry and have children of harletree God also commanded to name his children certain prophetic names Isaiah’s wife and children actually served as symbols of what what they were prophecies but prophecies about what yeah they were symbols and Prophecies of Israel they were a symbol just as Gomer was adulterous toward Hosea so Israel was adulterous toward God and this is the theme of the book of Hosea this idea of adultery or spiritual adultery again and again the prophet declares Israel you have been an adulteress to God you are a spiritual Harlot you profess faithfulness to your husband but in reality you are constantly defiling yourself with idols and looking to other powers other than God for deliverance from trouble you are Unfaithful Israel even though God has been faithful to you kind and loving to you he brought you up from Egypt he gave you the land in which you live he gave you his word but you have ignored his law and you have used His blessings for your own idolatrous ends God sent you prophets to turn you back he chastened you in limited ways he gave you Prosperity when you didn’t deserve it but you would not return even though he did all these things you are a stubborn Shameless adulteress that’s the message of Hosea and therefore God premised or God promised through Hosea to bring judgment on Israel he would Cast Away Israel his Unfaithful wife and he would disown her children but God promised something else what else did God promise that’s right a restoration that included what not just I’ll bring you back and I’ll bless you again but what was the most significant part that’s right I will change your heart I will cause you to genuinely repent and then love me always says I’ll betrothed you to myself in faithfulness you will come trembling to the Lord in the last day and as a symbol of this what did God command Hosea to do that’s right so somehow Gomer had departed from Hosea but God said go love again a woman who was loved by her husband and yet an adulterous and so Hosea went after his wife bought her um bought her back and brought her back into his home and said you’re not gonna have any other lovers I’m going to be your man Israel like Gomer would be similarly removed from her lovers she would not have a king or a temple a temple worship system until in the last days Israel looked upon the one whom she had pierced and in Repentance embraced her Messiah now it doesn’t give the specifics about the Messiah but we’re uniting that with the rest of the scripture the Kingdom of Israel will one day be established on the earth with the promise seed of David on the throne and he will be ruling the world in righteousness from Jerusalem and though Gentiles and I said this at the end of last week’s lesson we can have a part in this Kingdom if we also stop adulterating ourselves with idols and stop ignoring God’s kindness just as God showed love to Israel so God has shown us love by giving us good things by sustaining us each day and by making his word of Salvation available to us and though we have sinned incessantly against God and blaspheme his worth He has been patient with us giving us time to repent but have we been pretending to be devoted to God when he really isn’t our treasure let us behold the kindness of God and his patience and repent while there’s still time let us come to Jesus before his before his judgment comes and we are Swept Away but if we are already saved let us thank God for not only loving us when we didn’t deserve it but by doing everything necessary for us to be saved including changing our heart he provided his son but he also provided the faith in us so that we could see the son for whom he is for who he is and actually believe in him questions about what we talked about last week okay so let me just uh resay your comment hopefully hopefully I get it all correct but you’re saying that the change of heart that God promised um in Hosea we see actually what that specifically means in um in the revelation of the New Testament and God providing the sacrifice of Jesus but also doing the work of regeneration that comes when the gospel is declared and God causes a person to believe now we are all experienced or we who are Christians are experiencing that or have experienced that but because of the promises that we’ve seen in the Old Testament towards Israel that is something that’s also going to happen to them as a nation in the future so they’ve been you know they are resisting their King they are they are that wife that does not want to love her husband but God will draw her to himself but we will have been added in will be brought into that Kingdom Where the wild branch that is put into the to the Olive Tree of Israel the the tree of Abraham but yeah what we’re seeing already in the church is what’s going to happen one day in Israel other questions or comments okay well Industrials of redemption is coming it did not come during hosea’s generation the stubborn adulteress did not repent and therefore the prom the promised Judgment of God came to pass and we’re going to see how today here’s our outline we’re going to be spending time in Second Kings 17 just that one chapter today we’re going to look at how Israel was judged also the explanation of why Israel was judged well then examine what happened to the land of Israel after the inhabitants were removed and then we’ll consider what this judgment means for us today let’s ask the Lord’s blessing on this time our great God you aren’t Mighty and Majestic and there we thank you for this Revelation and yet we also recognize that you are not fathomable not fully fallible we can’t understand all your works or the extent of your mightiness or the extent of your Holiness but we thank you for what you have revealed because this is necessary for us this is beneficial for us this is lovely for us Our God I pray that you would help us to understand you in a better way and that we would apply the word that you wrote through your prophets in the scriptures and even here in Kings in Jesus name amen please open your Bibles and turn to Second Kings chapter 17.

second king 17 we’re going to be as I said just focusing on this one chapter today we’ll break it in half we’ll look at it in two parts let’s first read verses 1 to 23 and here the description of Israel’s judgment please follow along as I read this is Page 401 in the Pew Bible if you’re using that chapter 17 verse 1 of Second Kings down to verse 23.

in the 12th year of ahaz king of Judah Hosea the son of ela became king of Israel in Samaria and reigned nine years he did evil in the sight of the Lord only known as the king’s visual who were before him shamanese or king of Assyria came up against him and Hosea became a servant and paid him tribute but the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hosea who had sent Messengers to sow king of Egypt and had offered no tribute to the king of Assyria as he had done year by year so the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison then the king of Assyria invaded the whole land and went up to Samaria and besieged it three years in the ninth year of Hosea the king of his and the ninth year of Isaiah the king of Assyria captured Samaria and carried Israel away into exile to Assyria and settled them in Hala and haywor on the River of gozan and in the cities of the medes now this came about because the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God who had brought them up from the land of Egypt from under the hand of pharaoh king of Egypt and they had feared other gods and walked in the customs of the Nations whom the Lord had driven out before the sons of Israel and in the customs of the Kings of Israel which they had introduced the sun’s visual did things sick ly which were not right against the Lord their God moreover they built for themselves high places in all their towns from Watchtower to fortified City they set for themselves sacred pillars and ashram on every high hill and under every Green Tree and there they burned incense and all the high places as the Nations did which the Lord had carried away to Exile before them and they did Evil things provoking the Lord they served Idols concerning which the Lord had said to them you shall not do this thing if the Lord warned Israel and Judah through All His prophets and every Seer saying turn from your evil ways and keep my Commandments my statutes according to all the law which I commanded your fathers and which I sent you through my servants the prophets however they did not listen but stiffen their neck like their fathers who did not believe in the Lord their God they rejected his statutes and his Covenant which he made with their fathers and his warnings with which he warned them and they followed vanity and became Vain and went after the Nations which surrounded them concerning which the Lord had commanded them not to do like them they forsook all the Commandments of the Lord their God and made for themselves molten images even two calves and made an Ashura and worshiped all the hosts of heaven and served Baal then they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire and practiced divination and enchantments and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord provoking him so the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his sight none was left except the tribe of Judah also Judah did not keep the Commandments of the Lord their God but walked in the Customs which Israel had introduced the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and Afflicted them and gave them into the hand of plunderers until he had cast them out of his sight when he had torn Israel from the House of David they made jeroboam the son of nibak King then jeroboam drove Israel away from following the Lord and made them commit a great sin the sun’s Israel walked in all the sins of jeroboam which he did which he did they did not depart from them until the Lord removed Israel from his sight as he spoke through all his servants the prophets so Israel was carried away into Exile from their own land to Assyria until this day all right let’s observe seen this guy before but was Hosea a good or an evil King he was an evil King not as bad as some before him but he was an evil King what brought about the war between Assyria and Israel to the king of Assyria but at some point he went to Egypt to help you that’s right so he basically a Serial had been in submission to Assyria but decided to Rebel he reached out to Egypt for support and the king of Assyria learned of it so that meant War just to give you a bit of historical background place this um in the timeline of history the Assyrian Empire had been growing stronger and stronger since about 750 BC uh it had times of strength before that but it was again becoming strong Syrian Empire was based in Upper Mesopotamia this area particularly around the cities of Asher and Nineveh so Asher right here Nineveh is just a little bit above it right there in 744 BC Assyria had ended a period of Civil War it reorganized its government and Military and became a successful conquering machine began to subjugate many of its neighbors a Syria subjugated Babylon to the southeast it subjugated the medes and the Persians over in the East and the Northeast it then defeated the Hittites in the northwest and then it set at sights on the Southwest conquering phenicia tire and sidon in this area and Gaza near the coast to avoid being invaded the king of Israel menahem paid tribute to Assyria and we see that mentioned in the scriptures in Second Kings 15.

however the Assyrian King tiglath pleaser III later attacked Israel nonetheless this time under King Pika and he also attacked Syria Israel and Syria had actually been fighting a war as I remember Syria is about right here they had been fighting a war against Judah and the king of Judah ahaz send a message to Assyria and promise to pay him if he would actually declare war on Syria and Israel so Judah said if you fight these guys for me I will pay you Assyria said sure okay we’ll do that and they conquered Syria and they invaded Israel let’s see they under King pika Assyria captured Gilead Galilee and naphthali from Israel so that would be the North and Northeast sections of Israel they actually captured this territory and of the survivors in that area they were taken to Assyria so even before the passage we read here Syria has invaded and partially taken captives from Israel but Assyria was not done with Israel Israel was invaded a third time under tiglas pleaser’s successor chamonizer V but Hosea who became king after overthrowing Pika the previous sufferer of assyria’s Wrath he submitted to a Syria right away and he said I’ll pay you tribute that’s what’s mentioned in verse 3 of our chapter but in 725 BC Jose Rebels against Syria just as we read which meant that Israel was now going to be invaded by Syria for a fourth time this isn’t the first time a series come against Judith but it’s going to be the last Samaria itself falls under Jose’s I mean under a serious attack but why wasn’t Hosea leading the defense in Samaria where’s Isaiah he’s he’s in prison he’s been captured by the Assyrians so even though he’s captured a Syria is going to invade the land and the people try and do their best to defend while their King is captive how long does it take Samaria to fall three years that’s a pretty long time but somewhat normal for the time period while the Assyrians were renowned for their War engines and Siege Warfare sometimes it was just more profitable to starve out a well-fortified city or wait for someone in the city to betray it than to try and assault the city especially if you already control the surrounding area which Assyria did they invaded the whole land of Judah I mean the whole land of Israel and then besieged Samaria and even if the people didn’t surrender eventually they would be so weakened by the seeds that an assault would overwhelm the city’s defenses so Assyria dug in and besieged the city just waiting it out even with extra supplies and preparations Samaria could not last forever it would eventually fall but this is just as God prophesied remember Amos 3 11 therefore thus says the Lord God an enemy even one surrounding the land will pull down your strength from you and your citadels will be looted Hosea said something similar and Hosea 11 5 6 specifically identifying Assyria is said of Israel they will not return to the land of Egypt but Assyria he will be their King because they refuse to return to me the sword will against their cities and will demolish their gate bars and consume them because of their councils so Syria besieges Samaria the Bible doesn’t describe conditions inside Samaria during the Seas but what was it probably like based on what we see in other sieges in the Bible yeah Ron right the price of food gradually increases it becomes super expensive what else eventually there’s a shortage of food that’s the reason that prices are going up so if people don’t have food to eat what do they start doing yeah that’s something that whilst we see in the scripture is cannibalism eating people who have already died or actually killing children and eating them people eating their own excrements people starving to death there’s sure desperation and um a despair in the city is it’s a place full of fear probably people calling out to various gods or looking for some kind of Hope in various places but none comes this is a very tragic scene though that’s not describe to you that’s usually how sieges go took three years but Samaria capitulated in 722 BC what happened to the Israelites just as God promised taken into Exile Israelites are removed and it tells you it tells you in attacks where exactly they were removed too now there’s some debate about where these cities are and where the river goes in is but it appears that the surviving Israelites were taken far to the Northeast into Assyria and into the cities and the medes so we’re talking exactly as God promised in His prophets beyond the Euphrates River that’s this one here and so this area and this area over here they were taken into modern day Iraq and Iran but from other scriptures we can say that not all Israel was taken into exile Second Chronicles 34 9 mentions that Hezekiah who’s the king at this time in Judah he collects money to repair the temple in Jerusalem and he collects money from Judah from Benjamin and it says the remnant of Israel so there was still a Remnant during hezekiah’s Reign so what does that refer to well it may be and this is likely that the Assyrians took most the people into captivity but left some some poor people to work the land and to serve the newcomers into the land they would basically function as servants and slaves it’s possible also or alternatively that the remnants discussed in that passage are actually people who fled from Israel into Judah so they’re actually not um from the tribe of Judah or Benjamin but they flee to Israel and they lived there they flee to Judah and lived there until Judah Falls both of these might be true but not everyone was taken into exile but definitely most of them those that survived now while the book of Kings is mostly a recounting in Israel’s two kingdoms of what happened and there’s very limited commentary from the author there’s a shift here in the text starting in verse seven it goes down in verse 23. what’s the shift exactly we get an explanation of why these things happen and as we’ve gone through Kings and maybe in your own reading of Kings you notice that this is this is rare the author doesn’t usually make an extended commentary like this it might say oh he was an evil king or he was a he was a good King but we got a full explanation here of why Israel was judged in this way what phrase is repeated in verse in verses 7 and 9 describing Israel’s actions what phrase is repeated Sun’s visual is repeated but what did they do there’s something that they did that has a repeated phrase uh let’s see weird other gods it does say for you to the gods verse seven uh it doesn’t mention that in verse 9 though it does say that they did things secretly the phrase against the Lord appears in both those patches they did these things against the Lord and we see another repeated phrase in verses 18 20 and 23 describing God’s actions towards Israel look down at Verse 18 20 and 23 what phrase is repeated describing what God did that’s right removed him from his presence or removed them from his sight three times he says that God removed them he determined to remove them from his sight out of his sight and the author makes clear that this came upon Israel and would come upon Judah and just keep going on in Kings it came as a judgment for sin and he describes just how sinful Israel was what were some of the evil practices in Israel mentioned by the authors what was one of them worshiping Idols that’s right they um and they served Idols verse 12.

they feared other gods verse seven what else um made images I along the same lines of a worshiping Idols yes what else they do yeah they burn incest in an unauthorized way only the priests were to do that and in the temple and on a specific altar but they burned incense everywhere under on all the high places and they set up a number of worship sites they built high places everywhere they put Sacred pillars and ashram everywhere they were burning incense everywhere it just widespread idolatrous worship there and other things besides they walked in the customs of the Nations a number of times in the passage says they did as their neighbors did they looked to the nation they walked in the pattern of the nation they walked in the pattern of the evil Kings of Israel they didn’t depart from that I didn’t listen to God’s prophets they rejected God’s law they followed vanity and became vain they forsook all of God’s Commandments they made two golden calves for themselves they made ashra they worshiped all the hosts of Heaven they served Veil they sacrificed their children to false gods they practiced divination and enchantments they sold themselves to do evil provoking God I remember listening to a teacher one time say I can’t remember if this was from the Seminary course or from someone in a sermon but you’re saying that the Old Testament has a lot of different ways to describe sin a lot of different phrases that are not exactly the same but they give another image of what sin is and you see a number of those In this passage they forsook the commands they would not listen a lot to God’s law they ignored God it’s they were a people Rife with sin and so the Judgment Came Upon him a very great evil worship the host of Heaven what is meant by that just answering um quickly I believe that refers to the practice of looking at the heavens and believing the the bodies in the Heavens to be gods or to be representations of the gods they worship the sun god or they worshiped uh they worshiped the moon or they worshiped uh the stars as manifestations of the Gods certainly we see that in some other passages of scripture I think there’s one in Ezekiel maybe it’s Jeremiah where people in the temple and his vision are actually worshiping the Sun so that’s probably what’s meant there yeah Dwayne so uh it’s not just about uh worship it’s also looking looking at horoscopes you find horoscopes you stop doing it right there’s no wisdom right yeah thanks for missing that Twain so wish being the host of Heaven also involved astrology that is actually looking for wisdom or looking for divine guidance by observing observing the heavens observing the stars and certainly that was that’s something that’s still around today and it was certainly or it was also something around at that time so great great evil in Israel and these were God’s people but at this point this list of Israel’s sin should not surprise us because we’ve already been hearing the prophets denouncing Israel for doing these exact same things they’ve been warning Israel repent you’ve got to turn away from these things God’s judgment will come well they didn’t listen so God’s judgment came because of these things yeah really intermarrying with those decisions male worship abomination yeah that’s a great Point Roy just reminding ourselves how did Israel get to this point well we know that ultimately it came down to their hearts their hearts didn’t really love God they were uncircumcised and heart but they were already moving down this path early on when they intermarried with the Nations when they were not careful to destroy the Nations when they inherited the land destroy the the um idolatrous inhabitants as God commanded when they made alliances with the other nations when they intermarried the the Kings intermarried with the other nations even in the the passage right before this in Second Kings 16 you hear how the king of Judah ahaz that makes an alliance with Assyria and then he wants to impress the king of Assyria or maybe he’s just so impressed by the king of Assyria he brings in all these idolatrous practices into Judah it says I I like the altar I saw in Damascus that the king of Assyria made so let’s put that in in front of the temple and let’s move the other altar let’s put all our sacrifices on this new altar and let’s get rid of these other things that have been part of our worship so it’s exactly as you were saying Roy they were not careful to see where evil was going to come in and avoid it but the reason they were not careful is they they were uncircumcised in heart they didn’t really care to keep following after the Lord so it was inevitable that they were going to make these small compromises and keep moving down that path of idolatry so the as the prophets foretold God violently removed the ten and a half tribes of Israel by the hand of Assyria in 722 this was a judgment for sin by the way 722 or 721 two different dates given for some areas fall what does the as it is to this day indicate to us in verse 23 regarding Israel how permanent was this change that God brought about yeah really that’s right by the time that this book ends I know you can say that this phrase can sometimes be used not necessarily in in terms of the office Zone time but of the source that he’s citing but we go through the rest of kings and Israel’s not in the land anymore they never come back they they are judged by God or moved and that’s it as it is to this day Israel’s no longer in the land they’re still where Assyria dropped them off this was God’s judgment now the book of Kings could stop right here and just move back to Judah here’s what happened to the king of Israel but let’s go talk about Jude and see what happened to them but no the author wants his audience to see one more thing about the land and which Israel had formerly lived and that’s what the rest of the chapter talks about and that’s what we’re going to read next so look now at verse 24 and we’re going to read down to verse 41.

follow along with me the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon and from kutha and from Ava and from Hamas and sephor Vain and settled them in the cities of Samaria in place of the sons of Israel so they possessed Samaria and lived in its cities at the beginning of their living there they did not fear the lord therefore the Lord sent Lions among them which killed some of them so they spoke to the king of Assyria saying the Nations whom you have carried away in Exile in the cities of Samaria do not know the custom of the god of land so he has sent Lions among them and behold they kill them because they do not know the custom of the god of the land then the king of Assyria commanded saying take there one of the priests whom you carried away in Exile and let him go and live there and let him teach them the custom of the god of the Lamb so one of the priests whom they had carried away and Exile from Samaria came and lived at Bethel they taught them and taught them how they should fear the lord but every nation still made gods of its own and put them in the houses of the high places which the people of Samaria had made every nation in their cities in which they lived the men of Babylon made suck off benoth the men of kuth made nergal the men of moth made ashma and the avvites made nibhas and tartak and the sempervites burned their children in the fire to a dramalac and anomalac the gods of sephir vain they also feared the Lord and appointed from among themselves priests at the high places who acted for them in the houses of the high places they feared the Lord and served their own Gods according to the custom of the nations from among whom they had been carried away into exile to this day they do according to the earlier Customs they do not fear the lord nor do they follow their statutes or their ordinances or the law or the Commandments which the Lord commanded the sons of Jacob whom he named Israel with whom the Lord had made a covenant and commanded them saying you shall not fear other gods nor down yourselves to them nor serve them nor sacrifice to them but the Lord who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm him you shall fear and to him you shall bow yourselves down into him you shall sacrifice the statutes and the ordinances and the law and the Commandment which he wrote for you you shall observe to do forever and you shall not fear other gods the Covenant that I have made with you you shall not forget nor shall you fear other gods but the Lord your God you shall fear and he will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies however they did not listen but they did according to their earlier Customs so while these nations feared the Lord they also served their Idols their children likewise and their grandchildren as their fathers did so they do to this day all right another big section but let’s observe after the Israelites were taken away how was the land repopulated yes Steve those others that they um that they conquered exactly so Assyria brought captives from other places where people from other places and move them into the land of Israel this was a serious common practice this was actually a technique that later Empires would imitate whenever you conquer people remove them from the land and disperse them in the other lands in your Empire and then repopulate the land with your own why do this you’re welcome yeah it’s a way to lessen or to eliminate Rebellion when people are gathered together there’s a greater chance that they will Rebel especially if they don’t like the ruling Empire and when people are on their own land they are zealous to control that land and defend that land but you remove them from the land you split them up now they’re not going to have as easy of a Time raising up and fighting against the or rising up and fighting against the power that is you move your own people into the land or people who don’t have this same kind of ties in the land and you can get the profit from the land without worrying about rebellion in the land so this is a Savvy move as an Empire by the way I want to share with you an Assyrian inscription that describes what we’ve just seen in our text this comes from the Nimrod prison of Sargon II so this is one of the Assyrian prisms Sargon with shamanese’s General it came to the throne in 722 BC perhaps before the siege of Samaria ended or maybe after the season he’s just claiming the credit for what the previous King had done but here’s what he writes and this gives us Comfort or this gives extra confirmation and a little bit more information about what the Bible tells us he says on the prison the inhabitants of Samaria who agreed and plotted with the King hostile to me not to do service and not to bring tribute to Asher and who did battle I fought against them with the power of the great Gods my Lord I counted as spoil 27 280 people together with their chariots and gods in which they trusted I formed a unit with 200 of their chariots from our Royal Force I settled the rest of them in the midst of Assyria I repopulated Samaria more than before I brought into a people from countries conquered by my hands I appointed my eunuch as Governor over them and I counted them as Assyrians very interesting especially this gives us some data or at least gives us a number for the captives taken by Syria twenty seven thousand in some ways that sounds like a lot in some ways that doesn’t sound like a lot only twenty seven thousand that that few coming from Israel now you could say well maybe that number’s not accurate that’s possible but if it wasn’t d27000 that means that many people in Israel did not survive the attacks by Syria where they fled into Judah because there were not many left to be taken captive but that’s exactly his name is prophesied right it will just be pieces of an ear and a couple of legs that the shepherd is able to take away from the lion that comes to consume the people who moved into Israel’s land did not fear Yahweh what did God do to these people in response he sent lines among them they attacked and they killed some of them these foreign settlers concluded that these lines were attacking because they prop they did not know how to properly serve the god of the land of course that Pagan understanding that various lands have particular Gods they’re saying the same thing about Yahweh and they asked the king of Assyria for help the king grabs an exiled priest from Israel sends them back into the land and he says teach the people the custom of the god of the land this priest sets up in Bethel what is significant about the city of Bethel Edwin right so this is this is not painting a good picture who this priest is what kind of priest He is we don’t get specific commentary on what kind of priesthood was but he sets up in Bethel and that’s a side of idolatry in Israel Bethlehem um about one other city were the sights of the golden calf Bethel was also significant in Israel’s history but in recent history it was the site of idolatry but that’s where this priest sets up and he teaches the people and what’s the result of his teaching say that again that’s right the people do start to serve God but along with all the other gods they serve Yahweh along with the gods that they already had and this is what we call syncretism this is where you take elements from one religion and you add them into another or you take one God and you just add them into your Pantheon they set up a syncretistic religion in Israel how long do the syncretistic religion last according to the author to this day and he says Generations went by their children did it their grandchildren did it they all served God and other gods at the same time and the author recalls to mind when describing these people in verses 35 to 39 the promises that God made to Israel regarding worshiping him versus worshiping other gods Exodus and Deuteronomy Don’t Fear the other gods fear me obeying me I will deliver you but the people the land even though they heard some of these same words they did not obey them how does the behavior of the new inhabitants of Israel compare to the behavior of the old inhabitants of Israel say that again yes basically the same though perhaps you could say maybe the second group was actually a little bit better because when the Lions came among them they actually cared to do something about it but Israel no matter what God did they just persisted perhaps we could say that they perhaps some of them really would have trusted and and served Yahweh but maybe they’re teaching that they got from this priest wasn’t that great and so they just went back into a syncretistic religion just like Israel did because Israel did the same right Israel was not someone who served the other gods with no attention Yahweh they just served Yahweh alongside the other gods but that’s of course not really serving Yahweh yeah Dwayne right so we’ll talk about that more in just a second but there’s a definite mixture that takes place in Samaria but looking now at the whole chapter let’s ask some more interpretive questions first one aspect of God’s character is most evident in this passage it’s Justice right his Holiness and Justice we saw this already in this prophecies but now we’re seeing it come to pass God is just God hates sin he is patient but he will judge sin and when he does it will be fierce and that’s what we see heaven Israel sin is a big deal to God yeah the reason why um so you see that that God loves the world right so even with what the lines as you were saying even as bringing the Lions into the land after the new people came in they weren’t paying any attention to God’s law and God made sure that they noticed that he um that he’s serious about Islam the book of Kings was probably written by a prophet in Exile to Israelites in Exile why would this chapter chapter 17 be significant to his audience Mr Wayne if it would show how they what happened iterations that would occur that never were in Israel foreign land right so as you point out a couple of things Dwayne we know that this book goes all the way into the Babylonian captivity of Judah so we’re not simply talking about the Exile brought about by Syria but actually the Babylonian exile because the kingdom of Babylon the Empire Babylon is actually going to overtake the Assyrian Empire and so those taken into captivity in Judah they’re going to be needing to know the same information the whole book of Kings really it’s an explanation of how what happened to Israel came to pass and how Israel ended up in Exile how Judah ended up in Exile and the clearest explanation the most direct explanation appears right here in this book it’s because they turned away from God it’s because they serve the idols because they paid no attention to God’s law in light of this and in light of the the way this book ends it actually ends with kind of a note of Hope where the king of Judah is brought out of imprisonment and brought to the king of babylon’s table this is the king in the line of David what is the expected response of the audience based on what they read in Kings you’re in Exile because your forefathers did not serve the Lord therefore yeah it’s the cost of people to turn back to God it’s the cost people to do all the things that Israel would not do pay attention to God’s law heed God’s prophets be careful not to serve any other gods and God will bless you he will even return you to the land you’ll be faithful to his covenants that which he declared to Israel through Moses that which he declared to David he would bring them back so serve God his judgment is serious against sin but he is a God who is faithful in all aspects not just his judgment on sin but also his promises of restoration so turn to the Lord are you gonna say boy you that did come back and could look at this later on because one of the things that this exercise forever cured them of idolatry ever again in the same way as we see it here in the Old Testament and so from that standpoint forever is this lesson forever yeah um you said a number of things um Roy I’ll just repeat some of them not certainly not all the people who go in Exile return and people commonly say that the 10 tribes or the 10 lost tribes and it’s only the tribe of Judah and Benjamin that returned but remember that God said that in his prophecies that all Israel would be restored and there were some like we said some that fled to Judah from these other tribes and there were some perhaps also some from these other tribes that were taken into Exile that would eventually also come back with the people of Judah but as a whole these other tribes these tribes from Israel yeah they don’t they don’t come back they don’t return to the lord they’re not restored to the land but it is interesting that after this Exile we don’t see the same movement toward idolatry in Israel now that doesn’t mean that they are circumcised in heart and start falling after the Lord totally because as we’ll see when we get to Ezra and Nehemiah um instantly these these men these righteous men have to keep exhorting the Israelites and rebuking them say what are you doing you’re engineering with the people again what are you doing these priests are not actually clean and they’re trying to do the Lord’s work in the temple and I mentioned it before but I think it’s a Nehemiah starts pulling out the hair of some of the people because he’s so frustrated so it’s not that Israel is going to totally be righteous but at least idolatry their their attitude towards idolatry obvious Idols is changed and that seems to fit with what we saw in Hosea right it says Israel is going to be for a time without King and without um uh household idols and without public worship and and so that’s what we see happening but they didn’t mean that they had returned it was just like an interim State and when they would one day fully return but that’s what we see happening another question we kind of touched on this a little bit before was the priest who returned into the land of Israel a true priest of Yahweh or an idolatrous priest promoting syncretistic worship we can’t say for sure but there are some reasons for us to think that this was not a good priest and Dwayne mentioned one of them or we’ve mentioned two of them he went to Bethel that’s not a good sign he’s from Israel that’s not a good thing because Israel was always it was problematic in its worship and its priests were not not true priests you’d think that there are any true priests in Israel they would have gone into Judah because you can’t serve the Lord as a priest outside of his Temple and the result we don’t see the people turn back to the Lord they just add Yahweh to their other gods so this is probably not a faithful priest not someone who’s Faithfully going to declare the law of the Lord why does the author take time to tell us about the new inhabitants of the land because this isn’t Israel so why tell us about them yeah boy and you see a picture of that in the Gospel of John chapter 4 when Jesus walked through right so perhaps the explanation is really to just explain what happened to the remnant of Israel that was left in the land that intermarried and they um they continued in the tradition that Israel had already started which was to have a syncretistic worship now let’s understand about the Samaritans and the New Testament that we know there’s a lot of hatred between the Samaritans and the Jews but it’s not simply based on their ethnicity it’s not like oh you’re impure because you you married with Gentiles because we’re going to see when we get to or when we get to the New Testament some things have taken place where Israel actually had a kingdom again and the inter-testamental period that maccabean Revolt resulted in a New Kingdom of Israel which actually conquered a lot of the original land including Southern Judah or which was called idumia where the Edom where Edom used to be or where the live and those people became Jews there’s like a mass conversion they said or we want you all to be circumcised and we want you all to follow the law as as we have it revealed and the people agreed and they were in a sense considered Jews that’s why having Herod as as the king in the beginning of the gospels was not so bad to the Jews because they considered him to be Jewish he was a doomian after all he gave tacit recognition of Yahweh but when they conquered Samaria and they asked the Samaritans to do the same thing they would not they said you are not going to force your religion on us you may conquer us but we are not going to do your religion and so that was a real source of hatred between the two peoples the political animosity and also the religious differences so we do see this is the origin of the Samaritans and perhaps that is why the author gives us this passage but perhaps there’s another reason why else might the author have put this here what do you mean also going to talk about a little bit more there are certainly am I bringing up the idea of just adding Yahweh into the other gods that that is a this is an example to not be followed even today we have to be aware of syncretism and we’ll talk about that more in just a second but it’s not as if this was the The First Time Israel was syncretistic because as I said this is what Israel had been doing the whole time I don’t know if I can come to a a final answer on why this passage is brought up but it is an explanation of where the Samaritans came from it is a way to tie off the narrative with Israel it is perhaps another emphasis of God’s power in delivering up Israel they Assyrians take over the land but then God sends lines among them he says that’s just like a little reminder don’t think that you can just do whatever you want and it doesn’t matter it was all by your power and your gods that you accomplished this look I’m gonna go send lines among you I’m going to remind you that I’m the one who has the power I could have sent these lines to drive you off I could have totally saved Israel and not allowed you to conquer the land but it was my purpose for this to happen so maybe there’s that emphasis or perhaps it’s to emphasize Israel’s wickedness mention that the pagans when the Lions came they actually reacted they said oh we need to get right with the god of the land Israel didn’t have that kind of reaction but also there’s a sad symmetry to Israel’s experience in Canaan the idol just people were exterminated and removed from the land and God gave the land of Canaan to Israel but now idolatrous Israel is exterminated and removed from the land and the land is given to another people and other people who also idolatrous so there’s perhaps a number of things going on there so even though ultimately we don’t hear of any further judgment on the new syncretistic inhabitants does that mean that God doesn’t really care that much about syncretism obviously not what is God’s attitude towards syncretistic worship it’s spiritual adultery it’s Abomination to him and say well you know you’re kind of there no he says that’s evil if you serve me alongside other gods you’re not serving me at all right Jesus said the same thing in the New Testament no man can serve two masters if you have another God alongside God and God is not your God he will not give his glory to another Bill brought up that we have the same issue of syncretism or serving God alongside other gods even today and let’s talk about the a couple of those things when we consider application with our last four minutes or so but first how can we relate God’s patience and bringing judgment to Israel to sharing the gospel with unrepentant people today yeah Steve you know I mean realistically I mean you look at adultery in the Old Testament it’s supposed to be taken care of by stoning and sexual immorality thinking the fact that God just doesn’t definitely the same patience that God has played with Israel he’s displaying to all people today and we commit some of the same sins or even worse sins than Israel who was judged but while God is patient what does this passage also show us that is part of the Gospel that we need to share that’s right patience doesn’t last forever God is long-suffering but he does have an end point his Holiness and Justice demands that eventually he will judge and there’s a judgment coming for all people today just as God was patient and bringing Israel’s judgment sending prophets and trials to warn them so God is patient today but his final judgment is simply on hold it’s not been um absolved one day Jesus Will judge the Earth and righteousness and this is exactly what Paul declared to the Athenians in Acts 17 therefore having Overlook the times of ignorance God is now declaring to mend that all people everywhere should repent because he has fixed a day in which he will judge the world and righteousness through a man whom he has appointed having furnished proof to all men by raising him from the dead so we need to call people to repentance for they are rebelling against God as well just as Israel did God has warned of his just judgment and it will come his patience is great but it will not last forever and we can point to Israel and say here’s an example of that his patience is great but it will run out for the world and for individuals God will say I’ve given you enough time now I demand your soul but of course we can proclaim the way of escape the way of covering Jesus Christ son of God ISM a blending of one religion or worldview I think we should have world view in there a problem for Christianity Today I’ve already answered that question yeah it is what are some examples of syncretism with Christianity say that again new wage new wage ideas not super familiar with those I can’t talk about that at length but I I know that that’s true what else Steve it’s like Oprah Jesus said he was the only way and yet over who claims and says well Jesus can’t be the only one he’s certainly a way maybe in one of the better ways but you know it’s it’s a it’s an assuming that all religions are equal yeah yeah the idea that Universalist idea or really a postmodernist idea that everyone everyone can have their own way or all right in the end that’s an idea of man that gets blended into Christianity really it’s not that much different from what the Samaritans did you’ve got your oh you’ve got Yahweh but you can have all the other gods too because we’ll all be fine in the end and we can point to a number of other things praying to Saints that’s just praying to God’s syncretized into Christianity venerating icons it’s just wish me Idols brought into Christianity various superstitions Works righteousness that is just um Pagan religion brought into Christianity placate the gods earn favor with the gods offer sacrifices to the gods and you’ll be fine mysticism and meditation from gnosticism and other Eastern religions find their way in Christianity materialism worshiping the god of wealth Finds Its way into Christianity and the Prosperity Gospel we could point to a number of other things easy beliefism seek any God that you want or if as long as you just pray a prayer for Jesus you can seek any God you want theological liberalism the idea that that science is the authority that man’s Wisdom is is the greatest bring that into Christianity oh yeah we can’t believe everything in the Bible but that’s okay it’s just the feeling that you get from the Bible lots of things just come into Christianity these ideas of man’s Wisdom or these ideas from other religions they find their way in Christianity and we need to be aware of them and I think particularly we need to be aware of the most prevailing ideas in our society which are going to be towards materialism towards science towards um inclusivity those are the things that are going to find most pressure against Christianity um I have one other thought regarding just because something comes from a false religion or is has a connection to something that is idolatrous does not make it automatically evil if you sell me celebrate Christmas that doesn’t mean you’re a pagan idolaterer if you sing A Hymn that was written by a Catholic that doesn’t mean you believe in work salvation so we need to recognize that but we also want to be careful against allowing syncretistic ideas to or practices to come into coming to our own lives last question in light of what God shows us about syncretism you gotta ask are you a syncretistic Whisperer do you worship God alongside other gods maybe not obviously Jews after the time in Exile they did not obviously worship other gods but they did and that’s why they rejected the Messiah when he came they they worship them themselves they worship wealth they worship the favor of men do you do that at the same time that you profess to worship God because God will not accept that worship we’re out of time we’ve seen how God raised up Assyria to judge Israel but if Syria was itself Wicked and God prophesied judgment against Assyria we’re going to see that next week with the prophet Mayhem let’s go some prayer God you were who are Mighty you are the holy judge you will judge all men you will not accept worship alongside something else and God we know how deceitful our hearts can be and we know that the evilness that is in the world and in our own flesh so please deliver us from syncretism please Deliver Us from thinking that we can serve you along sir alongside serving something else that is not possible that is not beautiful to you you hate that and you will judge it Deliver Us from Evil but thank you that you have revealed yourself to us you have called us out from the first generation I pray that you would use this as Witnesses and that you would redeem more people for yourself that they would be free from serving these vain Gods becoming vain like the people of Israel and they would be saved and get to enjoy you in Jesus name amen

    Elisha Heals a Leper

Answers Bible Curriculum Year 2 Quarter 2 Lesson 13

In this lesson, David Capoccia looks at the poignant account of Elisha and Naaman the Syrian leper. David Capoccia explains how this account is another example of God being opposed to the proud and giving grace to the humble, no matter who they are or where they come from. David Capoccia cautions that, while this account features many elements of the gospel, Christians should not try to interpret it as a direct analogy of salvation in Jesus Christ.

we’re gonna get started good morning welcome to Sunday school thanks for being here right at the start today’s review day most the classes Quarter Two review for the second year of the answers Bible curriculum but in our class today we’re going to be looking at an account that we didn’t have time to look at last week and that’s the account of God using Elisha to heal Syrian leopard named Naaman uh just a word you may notice that the the screens seem to be refreshing turning black and then coming back on that’s a hardware issue that we’re trying to figure out but please you’re patience with that today you can always look here this one seems to be constant before we get to today’s lesson about naming let’s review a little bit of what we talked about last week last week we looked at God’s transferring Elijah into heaven and God’s replacing Elijah with Elisha why did Elijah keep trying to leave Elisha behind I think that’s the best answer that it was a test or it was part of the training the last set of training that Elijah was doing for Elijah in ministry will you persevere to the end will you stick with me into the end in Ministry what request did Elisha make to Elijah before Elijah was taken I would like a double portion of your spirit as we saw Elisha was not asking for double the spiritual power Elisha had for what was Elisha really asking Place yeah it was about succession there’s a there’s empowerment there just like a firstborn son who received a double portion he I need extra wealth I need extra uh extra empowerment to do this job but basically I want to take your place I want to be your successor I want the unique empowerment duties and difficulties that come with being the prophet in Israel and this was a hard request because this meant that the same trouble Elijah or Elijah experience would happen to Elisha and it meant that only God could Grant it but God did Grant Elijah’s request and in what two ways do we see Elijah’s succession as Prophet validated by God what’s one way very good remember Elijah Elijah said I don’t know if I can grant your requests it’s a hard request but if you see me depart from you you will have what you requested and he did Elisha did see Elijah go up to heaven in a whirlwind in that storm and in The Chariot of fire and what was the other validation he was able to do the same miracle that Elisha did which was to divide the Jordan River and to walk across on dry Ground God confirmed his prophet now many principles from this account as we saw apply to us we have our own inherited responsibility and empowerment as Christ ambassadors and though we cannot force results we cannot make ourselves successful from a human perspective we can be faithful to the charge handed down to us as Elijah and Elijah were and therefore and thereby obtain God’s commendation so let us by their witness persevered to the end in Ministry and may God grant us a legacy of righteousness like theirs that will testify to the world even after we die questions or comments about last week’s lesson all right well to close out the quarter we’re going to look at the account of Elisha and Naaman this is a famous account also a profound one here’s our outline for today’s class we’ll look at the context of where this account appears the chapter is right before Second Kings five then we’ll analyze the account itself and then we’ll consider how this account applies to us that’s right father I pray that you’d help me to explain this well some tricky things in this passage Lord I pray that you would help me and that you would Minister to your people that you build up your church mature your people and also those that don’t know your God I pray that you would save them in Jesus name amen all right open your Bibles please the second Kings five before we read the chapter we’re gonna get some context what’s happened since chapter two where we last were Elijah Elisha exceeds sus sucks seeds Elijah in Second Kings 2 and then he continues to speak and Minister for God empowered by God God meanwhile continues to validate Elisha by miraculous signs at the end of Second Kings 2 young men ridicule God’s prophet and by extension God himself Elijah pronounces a curse on them and they are mauled by bears it’s a miracle Second Kings three God according to the word of Elisha miraculously provides water for Israel and Judas thirsty armies as they are going out to fight and subdue rebellious Moab the battle is or they are able to defeat Moab more actually in battle but there’s also the miracle of the water for the armies now though the wicked king of Israel jehoram benefits from these Miracles Elisha says it’s because of Jehoshaphat that God is even allowing me to talk to you and that these Miracles take place it was on account of righteous Jehoshaphat in Second Kings 4 we see a number of Miracles God uses Elisha to miraculously provide for a righteous Israelite Widow she was the wife of one of the sons of the prophets who were the sons of the prophets again who are the sons of the prophets yeah they’re followers of the prophets some of them are prophets themselves but they’re righteous men and their families ostensibly are righteous as well so their disciples or followers of God’s prophets so this Widow was married to one of the sons of the prophets he died and the Widow’s about to have her two sons sold into slavery because she’s in great debt the creditors are coming they’re going to sell her sons into slavery but God provides that a little bit of oil she has miracula will not run out until she fills up a whole bunch of vessels and then is able to sell them pay her debts and then live on the rest with her two sons this is a miracle provided for this righteous Israelite Widow but there are more miracles further on in Second Kings 4 God uses Elisha to miraculously cause a Barren but righteous woman from shunam that’s another town in Israel so this is another Israelite woman to conceive and have a son with her aged husband this is a miracle and the gracious thing from the Lord then this son later dies but God uses Elijah to actually raise the boy from the dead another Big Miracle and at the end of Second Kings Four two more miracles a group of the sons of the prophets accidentally create poisonous stew they’re not able to eat it but God uses Elisha to miraculously make the stew edible again and then finally God uses Elisha from raxing multiply food for the sons of the prophets 20 body Loaves and a few fresh ears of grain fully feed a hundred men and they even have some left over now I mentioned all these things to you because you may notice there’s a pattern to these Miracles at least when it comes to who’s receiving them who is receiving these miracles no these these here are Israelites these are all Israelites but what else can we say about them they’re not just Israelites what else do they have in common they are yeah God fears they are righteous we have these right the righteous Widow these two righteous women and then we have a number of things happening to the sons of the prophets and we also have the thing happening for Jehoshaphat who was a righteous King those who are not righteous they are part of the Miracles sometimes as well but it’s because of the righteous people or they’re on the other side of the miracle like those boy or those young men who are ridiculous ridiculing God’s prophet but these people that these Miracles are happening or the people that these Miracles are happening for they’re in distress they need help they’re Israelites they’re men women and children and they’re righteous they’re true followers of Yahweh now that’s important because that has to do that has going to have something to do with the account that we’re looking at today so keep that in mind as we now turn to analyze our main passage in Second Kings five remember that the Miracles in the previous context they take place on behalf of distressed but righteous Israelites but now let’s look at chapter five and we’re going to read the whole chapter verses 1-27 all along with me please now Naaman captain of the army of the king of Aram was a great man with his master and highly respected because by him the Lord had given Victory to arum the man was also a valiant Warrior but he was a leper now the Armenians had gone out in bands and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel she waited on naaman’s wife she said to her mistress I wish that my master with the prophet who was in Samaria then he would cure him of his leprosy Naaman went in and told his master saying thus enough spoke the girl who was from the land of Israel then the king of Aram said go now and I will send a letter to the king of Israel he departed and took with him ten talents of silver and 6 000 shekels of gold and 10 changes of clothes he brought the letter to the king of Israel saying and now as this letter comes to you behold I’ve sent Naaman my servant to you that you make cure him of his leprosy when the king of Israel read the letter he tore his clothes and said am I God to kill and to make alive that this man is sending word to me to cure a man of his leprosy but consider now and see how he is seeking a quarrel against me it happened when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes that he sent a word to the king saying why have you torn your clothes now let him come to me and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel so Naaman came with his horses and his chariots and stood at the doorway of the House of Elisha Elisha sent a messenger to him saying go and washing the Jordan seven times and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean but Naaman was Furious and went away and said behold I thought you will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper I’m not abana and far far the rivers of Damascus better than all the Waters of Israel could I not wash in them and be clean so he turned and went away in a rage then his servants came near and spoke to him and said my father the prophet told you to do some great thing would you not have done it how much more then when he says to you wash and be clean so he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan according to the word of the man of God and his flesh was restored like the Flesh of a little child and he was clean when he returned to the man of God with all his company and came and stood before him he said behold now I know that there is no God in all the Earth but in Israel so please take a present from your servant now but he said as the Lord lives before whom I stand I will take nothing and he urged him to take it but he refused Naaman said if not please let your servant at least be given two mules load of Earth for your servant will no longer offer burnt offering nor will he will he sacrifice other gods but to the Lord and this matter may the Lord pardon your servant while my master goes into the house of Remnant to worship there and he leans on my hand and I bow myself in the house of remn when I bow myself in the house of women the Lord pardon your servant in this matter he said to him go in peace so he departed from him some distance the servant of Elisha the man of God thought behold my master has spared this name in the airmean by not receiving from his hands what he brought as the Lord lives I will run after him and take something from him when Naaman saw one running after him he came down from The Chariot to meet him and said is all well they said all is well my master has sent me saying behold just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from the Hill Country of Ephraim please give them a talent of silver and two changes of clothes Naaman said be pleased to take two talents and he urged him and he bound two talents of silver and two bags with two changes of clothes and gave them to two of his servants and They carried them before him when he came to the hill he took them from their hands and deposited them in the house and he sent the men away and they departed but he went in and stood before his master and Elisha said to him Where Have You Been Ghazi and he said your servant went nowhere then he said him did not my heart go with you when the man turned from his Chariot to meet you is it a time to receive money and to receive clothes and Olive Groves and Vineyards and sheep and oxen and male and female servants therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever so he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow okay an amazing account start our analysis with observations the count focuses on a man named Naaman what do we learn at the beginning of this account about Naaman what’s one thing he’s a great man well respected great man uh considered great by his master what else that’s right he’s called the captain or this would be the supreme commander of the Syrian armies he is very high up in the king’s court and he has been very successful it says the Lord had given him victory he is the successful captain of the armies of the king of Aaron yes Danny good question who was over what nations was he successful it’s possible that it includes the nation of Israel he may have actually himself led the Syrian armies against Israel we don’t know that for certain various commanders at different times lead the Syrian armies but he was successful and certainly the Israelites were a neighbor and sometimes enemy of the kingdom of Aaron yeah Danny girl right it doesn’t say that he himself led the raid that resulted in her capture but she was taken captive by the Arabian so that does tell you that the relations between the two kingdoms have not been positive it’s normal for raids to from one side to go to the other and the air means that actually captured this girl um Naaman may have also LED raids against Israel that certainly would have been normal for the Syrian commanders to do so he’s the commander the successful commander of the Syrian armies what else do we learn about Naaman he is a leper yeah we’ll talk more about that in just a second he’s also said to be from Aram where is Aram yes Dwayne Syria yeah some Bible translations actually translate the term Aram as Syria it’s literally Aram in the Old Testament Hebrew but Aram the kingdom of Aram would be that if Israel’s right here Syria the kingdom of Aaron would be right to the Northeast so they’re very close to Israel and they’re frequently going to be interacting with Israel especially right after this chapter Syria Aram is going to do a number of things with Israel he’s from Aram that means he’s a gentile not a Jew he’s also called a man of Valor that could refer to his martial courage or it could refer to his great wealth that term could mean either of those things but also a leper mentioned at the very end but he was a leper remember the term leprosy has a broader definition in the Bible than it does now leprosy today also called Hansen’s Disease is a serious contagious disease of the nervous system caused by bacterial infection which the body deteriorates from the inside out there’s loss of feeling in various parts of the body which means the one who has leprosy is not able to notice when he damages the various limbs or parts of his body and soon those parts actually begin to fall off it’s a very horrific disease it is curable today with antibiotics but in Bible times it was not if you had leprosy of this type you would die a slow and humiliating death but leprosy in the Bible does not necessarily refer to just this serious form of disease it referred to any number of skin diseases and some of them were actually pretty mild others were serious like the one I just described what kind of leprosy does Naaman have it’s actually a difficult question let’s gather some Clues notice that though Naaman has leprosy he’s still accomplishing much for himself and for his King it doesn’t appear to be a serious threat of contagion from Naaman since he’s constantly interacting with people he goes in before the king he has a number of slaves he’s leading soldiers that says something about the kind of leprosy he has another clue is that the appears at the end of the chapter when naaman’s leprosy is said to come upon gahazi gehazi is described as appearing how he’s described as being white as snow a leopard white as snow and that that phrase is sometimes connected with leprosy in the Bible and it is used at least one other time to describe the totality of leprosy of one other person and that’s Miriam may remember Miriam and the pentateuch is once struck with Leprosy when she and Aaron rebelled against Moses let me just read to you the description of her leprosy from numbers 12 because the same description why does snow is given to her that should help shed some light on what Naaman has so this is numbers 12 verses 10 to 12.

and this is what it says but when the cloud had withdrawn from the tent God is just rebuked Aaron and Miriam behold Miriam was laborious as white as snow as Aaron turned toward Miriam behold she was leprous then Aaron said to Moses oh my Lord I beg you do not account the sin to us in which we have acted foolishly and in which we have sinned oh do not let her be like one dead whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes from his mother’s womb that’s a very interesting description it’s quite Vivid this white like snow leprosy from Miriam which seems to have some similarity to what is described as happening to Naaman and later gehazi makes the person look like a corpse the flesh looks like it’s been half beaten and half formed it’s very pale like snow perhaps even resembling the look of a stillborn child that’s actually the way the NIV translates that description in Numbers Chapter 12. don’t let her look like one born still or a stillborn so this leprosy is pretty frightening looking notice something else over back in our account in Second Kings five actually soon afterwards though turn to leper at the end of this chapter gehazi we later find gahazi in the court of the king of Israel in just a few chapters in Second Kings 8 he’s talking to the king and relating the Deeds of Elisha now where people with Leprosy allowed in the king’s court No in fact they weren’t even allowed in the towns of Israel they were to stay outside the camp outside the towns because the leprosy was thought to be contagious it was considered unclean they couldn’t come in except for one kind of leprosy what kind you may not know or remember but there was one exception and I’ll read it to you from Leviticus 13. actually turn there you can see this yourself turn back to Leviticus 13. this is actually where we get a number of the laws that relate to leprosy Leviticus 13 and 14.

there were different types and it talks about when you see something that looks leprous what the priest is supposed to do and there’s one type in the middle of this section which we should pay attention to Leviticus 13 verses 9 to 17.

    verse 9.

when the infection of leprosy is on a man then he shall be brought to the priest the priest shall then look and if there is a white swelling in the skin and it has turned the hair white and there was quick raw flesh in the swelling it is a chronic leprosy on the skin of his body and the priest shall pronounce him unclean he shall not isolate him for he is unclean normally you’d be isolated seven days to see whether the thing progressed he says don’t even do that he’s unclean if the leprosy breaks out farther on the skin and lets you covers all the skin of him who has the infection from his head even to his feet as far as the priest can see then the priest shall look and behold if the leprosy has covered all his body he shall pronounce clean him who has the infection it has all turned white and he is clean but whenever raw flesh appears on him it shall be unclean the priest shall look at the raw flesh and he shall pronounce him unclean the raw flesh is unclean it is leprosy or if the raw flesh turns again and is changed to White then he shall come to the priest and the priest shall look at him and behold if the infection has turned to White then the priest shall pronounce clean him who has the infection he is clean very interesting so what kind of leprosy actually can still keep one clean yeah right exactly if your whole body is covered by the leprosy then once that happens you’re considered clean while it’s progressing you’re unclean but once your whole body has turned white and your all your hair is turned white you’re considered clean however you could become unclean again if what happens if a section of raw flesh appears so apparently even after your whole body has been covered by this leprosy there may be a breakout of some kind of raw flesh and inflammation of the skin and while that’s there you are unclean until it turns back to the white as the rest of the body so we have these details gathered back in the second Kings five what kind of leprosy does Naaman have we’ll wait to the interpretation step before we take a stab at that question let’s ask some other questions related to observations Naaman hears that there’s a prophet in Samaria who can heal naaman’s leprosy how does he hear about this prophet his servant girl probably better understand slave girl because of her origin we mentioned earlier she’s an Israelite girl who was kidnapped taken captive by an aramian raid and if you’re a kidnapping a person you’re not going to hire them you’re gonna be like oh yeah it doesn’t work for me a couple of uh you know a certain amount of money per day she’s a slave she’s been enslaved she ends up serving naaman’s wife the Miss or whom she calls her mistress and she tells naaman’s wife that she wishes her master visited the prophet in Samaria because that Prophet would heal him naaman’s wife tells Naaman and Naaman tells the king what were you gonna say Danny yeah she’s not very old I’m not exactly sure what little girl entails but usually if it’s saying little I mean girl already means young but little girl we’re probably talking to somebody who’s not very old at all and she was kidnapped and she’s not being taken back and never is according to this account not that we can see anyways she tells about this prophet name and hears about it so a surprising chain of events to give name in this information but he goes to the king Eamon goes to his King and he gets permission to set out for Samaria what does name and take with him a couple different things he takes 10 talents of silver now talent What’s Talent a talent is 75 pounds about 7 75 pounds so how many pounds of silver is this 750 pounds of silver that’s a ton of silver and then six thousand shackles of gold now what’s a shekel what are six thousand shekels another math question here 3 000 shekels is equal to a talent and we have six thousand shackles so how many pounds of gold 150 pounds of gold that’s a lot of gold a lot of silver a lot of gold and then also what else is he taking 10 changes of clothes and then the letter from the King there’s a letter from the King as well but he’s bringing a lot of wealth with him and he’s going to have to transport all that wealth and secure all that wealth which means he’s taking some of his servants or slaves with him actually the word used for Servant here could mean servant or slave so I’m going to refer to them both as slave or servant we don’t really know what kind they were but he has slaves they could be slaves also or they could be soldiers but they’re called servants here he’s taking all this wealth with him he’s got this Caravan it describes the Caribbean as consisting of horses and chariots in verse 9. all of them are traveling to Samaria when Eamon arrives in Israel and presents his King’s letter to johoram the king of Israel how does johoram react yeah very interesting response he first tears his clothes which is a sign of grief or distress is this is a terrible thing that’s happened that we’ve gotten this letter and that we see this person and his conclusion as you were saying Danny is that the king of Syria is trying to pick a fight with Israel basically I’m sending you this servant for you to heal oh you can’t heal him then I’m gonna go to war with you because that was very rude of you or that you you refuse to heal him so he’s saying he’s trying to pick a fight with me this is terrible news we’re going to soon be going to war with Syria what factors to harm strangely forgetting or ignoring that there is a prophet who can heal this man he doesn’t say oh I’ll send you to Elijah right away he just says oh I’m not God I can’t do anything for you he’s strangely forgetting about Elisha Elisha hears about the king’s reaction though and he says send them to me and he gives the reason so that he will know there is a prophet in Israel you make it look like there isn’t there is anyone brings his Entourage to Elisha’s house and Naaman stands at Elisha’s door but the healing process as arranged by God through Elisha makes Naaman Furious what is it that Elisha says and does that enrage is Naaman yeah he doesn’t even meet with him he sends a messenger he’s at the door of his house it wouldn’t take too much effort for Elijah to come out but he doesn’t he sends a messenger and the messenger has a message what about the messages offensive yeah Rob yeah yeah he feels like it’s a silly and easy thing to do go wash yourself in a river seven times and then there’s another aspect to that watching that also infuriates Naaman where is he supposed to wash the Jordan what’s his view of the Jordan gross non-special certainly not a majestic River there are way better rivers in Syria why would I have to go to the Jordan so Elisha won’t meet with him himself he has to do something that seems silly and easy and it’s in the Jordan the dirty gross Jordan River and he’s ready to turn away in a rage he’s gonna storm off but his servants and treat him they say and they say to Naaman you were willing to do something hard and he’s told you to do something easy why not do that and Naaman listens to his servants his slaves and he travels the approximately 25 miles from Samaria to the Jordan River he dips himself in the Jordan seven times and his skin is restored just like the soft and perfect skin of a baby name is even said to become clean but Naaman doesn’t just rejoice and go home he returns to Elisha well this time actually does present himself to name it now because of the travel time this would have been a day two days or three days later take some time to go to the Jordan back when he arrives back before Elisha what does Naaman confess I now know there’s only one God and it’s your God it’s the god of Israel it’s Yahweh there’s no other God I now know that Naaman wants to give a gift to Elisha after all that’s why he’s brought all this fabulous wealth but Elijah refuses even when Naaman repeatedly urges Elisha to accept a blessing that’s actually the word gift can be translated blessing except a blessing from me says Nope as the Lord lives I will not accept the thing from you seeing that Elijah cannot be persuaded Naaman instead asks Elisha for a gift for two mule loads of soil from the land of Israel what reason does Naaman give for this request it is for sacrifice says I want this soil so that I can sacrifice to Yahweh that’s a notice the word for what’s the exact verse here yeah verse 17 for your servant will no longer offer burnt offering nor will these sacrifice other gods and to the Lord also the connection between the soil and sacrifice comes back to that in the interpretation step but just notice that observe that okay he also before leaving asks Elisha for yahweh’s pardon over one issue what’s the issue yes he says even though I’m going to serve Yahweh only I do have a duty to go into the house of women my master is going to lean on me and he’s going to Bow and when he bows I’m going to bow to another God in the house of Remnant now what’s this Remnant all about according to John McArthur Raymond is a parody a Hebrew word that means pomegranate but it’s a parody of the Assyrian ranunu which means thunderer so we’re probably talking about Baal um bail hey Dad the storm God this would be this another version of the bail that was introduced into the northern tribes the storm God the sky God it’s one of the main Gods in Syria he says I’m going to go into the house of Raymond which is the house of Baal so Naaman is essentially asking when I support my master as he worships Baal in Bales Temple and it looks like I’m worshiping Baal too please let Yahweh pardon me not really worshiping Baal but I have to be there for my master what’s Elijah’s response go in peace which seems to suggest he has the pardon that he’s asking for otherwise you couldn’t be going in peace that would be wonderful the account stopped right here oh great wonderful the miracle that’s wonderful but there’s a epilogue something else happens afternoon leaves gahazi Elisha’s servant resolves to do something what does he resolve to do I’m gonna go get something from Naaman I’m gonna go take something from Naaman kahazly secretly runs after Naaman and he tells a lie about Elisha needing some gifts for some sudden visitors uh for what does gehazi ask specifically please give me two changes of clothes and Talon of silver remember that’s 75 pounds and generosity though Naaman gives him two talents 150 pounds of silver and two changes of clothes now obviously God he’s not gonna be able to carry all that back so someone named him slaves they carry it for him until gahazi gets close to his house he’s able to take the items from the Servants of Naaman and put them away in his house so the servants leave and gohaji goes back to the presence of his master what lie does gehazi then tell Elisha yeah like she says where have you been God this is I didn’t go anywhere I’ve been here the whole time but Elisha knows all along about what kahazi is doing as if his own heart was going with gehazi he saw it all Elisha then acts very interesting question is it time gahazi to receive money clothes Olive Groves Vineyards sheep oxen male and female servants what’s the expected answer no it’s not time it’s not time therefore what you did was very inappropriate gohazi sought to take some wealth from Naaman but Elijah says gehazi would really take something else what is he taking from Naaman his leprosy you went to get something from Naaman well you got it it’s his leprosy and that’s just and kahazi it says the end of the account he leaves supernaturally leprous as white as snow Okay so we’ve gathered some observations on this this chapter and the text here let’s take these observations and now put some put them towards some interpretive questions do you have a question yeah digitalizes likes Arden um Neiman saying it was okay to bow down to another guy well he does say good question is Elisha really saying it’s okay if you bow down to another God well he does say go in peace and he is God’s representative here so unless Elisha is saying something on his own and not Consulting God is saying oh it’s fine then this seems to be something that is okay by God not that bowing down to another God is okay but this particular circumstance that Naaman is in where he’s required to do this Duty he’s not really wishing but he has to support his master wise Master worships this particular situation seems to be pardoned by Yahweh yeah George yeah that’s a good point too and then certainly that coincides with some new testament teaching where we say or where we learn an idol is nothing so he says I’m going into this Temple um I’m forced to be the support for my master but really I’m not serving that God there is no God there there’s no God except in Israel but that’s a pretty particular situation we know there’s also some other New Testament teaching that say beware of taking part in anything idolatrous don’t go feasting in an Idol’s Temple thinking oh an idol is nothing yeah we’re gonna say Danny just hmm right yeah that’s a good point uh certainly we can see naaman’s heart we can see that this really bothered him and that he wanted to bring it before Elisha we just say real quickly we don’t want to take these Concepts too far because we know that there are certain other parts of scripture where for example the three friends of Daniel are told to bow down before the statue they can’t rationalize and say well we know the statute is really nothing so if we bow it doesn’t really mean anything they very clearly stand up and say no we have to Worship the Lord only we’re not going to bow down before any Idol so we don’t want to take any of the principles being exercised for a name in here too far and say oh it doesn’t really matter if you bow down to where a statue as long as you think it’s not really an idol there there are some subtleties to what God is God is exactly pardoning here all right let’s ask some interpretive questions here’s a biggie what kind of leprosy does Naaman have what do you think I would argue yes it is the mild form of chronic leprosy that covers the whole body this is not the more serious form where your body is being eaten from the inside out I would say this is the more mild form this is still a very grotesque form of leprosy because if it is indeed like Miriam then he looks like a corpse this isn’t just like somebody who looks like an albino this is someone who looks like he’s a corpse walking around this is a very scary looking skin condition but technically it’s uh mild and it’s not going to kill him now there are some tricky details that it’s kind of hard to put together into a satisfactory interpretation verse 11 does say I thought he would wave his hand over the place that seems to suggested localized lesion of leprosy but then he says the place and cure the leper which is weird because he’s talking about himself so why does he say it like that and the word leper does not refer to a place it refers to a person so I’m a kind of confusing statement there in verse 11.

also there’s that detail that when he comes out of the Jordan and said he is made clean well technically if he has full body leprosy isn’t he clean already is this another form of leprosy well even if he does have full body leprosy obviously is not normal so I think there’s a sense that he would still be considered unclean even if he is ceremonially clean in Israelite law but I think the decisive details are the fact that Naaman is to able to accomplish very much on behalf of his master is still able to interact with people who are not afraid of him shunning him and gahazi when he has the same form of leprosy is still able to go into the king’s court now you can try and argue some certain things about Second Kings eight as being outside of the chronology or maybe because he got healed later but I don’t think it was a persuasive I think the the judgment on gahasi proceeds forward into the chapters because actually we don’t even see gehazi serving Elisha anymore he’s apart from Elijah at that time so I think the Judgment remained on him but it was again that mild form of still grotesque looking chronic body covering leprosy I would argue that’s the kind of leprosy that Naaman has he’s completely Snow White his hair is all white and while this is not deadly there are the periodic infections of the skin of raw flesh so that is assuredly painful and annoying and socially there’s an obvious stigma because of his frightening appearance maybe that’s good for battle but socially he looks very scary foreign I believe that’s the form of leprosy we’re looking at here why does Naaman bring so much wealth with him yeah Rob OT is yeah I think that’s a good way to describe it he’s trying to buy The Profit services and this is totally normal for how the people of that time considered holy men and Prophets if you’re going to go down to a prophet you always had to bring a gift with you go down to a Seer or to a holy man we actually see something like this happening in numbers 22-24 remember balak consults Balaam who’s supposedly a prophet and he’s ready to honor him with all sorts of gifts he says just curse Israel for me but when he doesn’t do that he says oh I was going to honor you but now you get no honor because you’re not doing what I want you to do it’s looking to buy The Profit Services you can call it a gift oh I’m just really thankful for what you did but essentially it’s buying the profit services and this is customary so Naaman brings all these gifts why does Elijah refuse the gifts yeah Roy right so to write to accept the payment would be to really prostitute his position as profit I’m not in it for myself and God is not a God who needs money God acts for according to his own glorious and holy purposes therefore it’s not appropriate for me to accept any gift from you I’m not a prophet for hire and God is not a genie who if you pay him or God is not some God or if you just pay him he’ll do what you want yeah Roy yeah that’s a great Point Roy uh Faith healing and the Prosperity Gospel they invert exactly about what Elisha is doing here and they’re acting just like the prophets of the Pagan Nations where accept a gift give me some sort of money and then God will do what you want though when Elisha explains his reasoning to gehazi he says something different something in addition that is very interesting he says it is not the time to be receiving wealth receiving gifts why not why is it not an appropriate time because it suggests that there is an appropriate time or something like an appropriate time but that is not the time right now why not what could be a possible reason just me yeah okay that’s a that’s definitely a cogent explanation that he says for this miracle it’s important that we don’t accept any wealth because we’re trying to present our position and God’s position in a certain light so if you by you accepting this gift you’re really polluting that message that that God is putting forth through this miracle why else why else is it an appropriate inappropriate time for be for Gathering or for accepting wealth yeah Roy willing to pay maybe this might be something okay um that’s an interesting thought the it’s certainly true well no I’ll say one thing and then I’ll say the other thing it’s the Syrian paying the Israelite here or seeking to pay so it would not be exactly paying off because the raids seem to be coming from Syria unless he’s trying to pay off the Israelites so they don’t raid Syria we don’t know if they were raiding Syria but we would expect the payment to be going the other direction if there were indeed a paying off of the rates however it’s interesting that you mentioned raids and serious relationship as an enemy of Israel because as I said before right here in this chapter begins a number of accounts about how Syria Wars with Israel they devastate Israel actually to the point where they besieged Samaria and the inhabitants are so desperate that they start cannibalizing their own children so I think there is a sense that we can say it’s inappropriate for us to be accepting this gift or trying to gather wealth and trying to enjoy wealth because think about what’s about to happen the chastisement of God through Syria is about to come upon Israel it’s so it would be silly for us to try and make ourselves comfortable with well we’re about to go under siege in a city we’re gonna have to leave this wealth behind we can’t lug around 150 pounds of silver or uh if we’re trying to hold on to these well these things are going to be taken by the enemy right now we really need to put our priorities somewhere else it’s not appropriate for us to be gathering wealth and trying to enjoy well I think along with that we can also say the spiritual state of Israel makes it inappropriate for the prophets to be gathering or enjoying wealth there’s an important and difficult job for the prophets to do they need to be God’s soldiers they need to be prophets calling the people visual back to repentance they cannot afford to be weighed down with wealth taking on its cares getting distracted by its comforts because Israel’s soul is in peril the northern tribes in which Elisha and gehazi are ministering they have been idolatrists for a long time they’re beginning there’s a Revival beginning but there’s important work to be done there’s still much wickedness going on before the prophets can rest and enjoy God’s blessings the nation needs to turn back to Yahweh remember God did promise rest and prosperity to Israel it says when you follow me I’ll bring you into the land I’ll give you such blessing and I want you to enjoy it but they’re not following Yahweh right now so it’s not appropriate it’s not appropriate for people to just be at rest and just enjoying the various blessings of God one of those blessings would be in wealth because Israel is not obedient they are under the threat of God’s judgment what would the rest of the people of Israel think if they see the prophets acquiring wealth and taking their ease would they not take that as a sign that everything’s okay no worries everybody we’re good just enjoy yourself seek whatever Pleasures you want because the prophets are settling down so we can too I think we can say that another reason why it’s inappropriate for gehazi or Elijah to accept the wealth is because it sends the wrong message to Israel it makes them think that everything’s okay it’s going to distract the prophets from Ministry there’s such important work to be done the spiritual state of Israel makes it inappropriate for us to be accepting wealth or trying to gather and enjoy wealth chastening is coming judgment is coming and the message that we’re even just trying to to portray right now to to Naaman and to those who are witnessing this is sullied by your obtaining wealth on my behalf remember he says it’s not because I want this he says Elisha wants this he sent me that’s exactly in contrast to what Elisha had said before no by the Lord I will not accept anything from you so this is the wrong message this is the wrong time for receiving wealth what’s really interesting we don’t have time to pursue this right now is that you can see this theme in other parts of the Old Testament but there’s an inappropriate time for accepting wealth or for trying to enjoy wealth Ecclesiastes 10 is one example Solomon writes that woe to the nation whose princes feast in the morning and get drunk in the morning why that’s totally inappropriate time they’re only doing that because they know a judgment is coming and they want to enjoy themselves while they can I always says they the blessed is the kingdom whose princes Feast at the appropriate time because they’re following after the Lord and there’s also um some other things in the uh the latter prophets interestingly there’s also a section in Jeremiah where Jeremiah is told to purchase aditive property right before Israel is about to be invaded and Jeremiah’s like why did you want me to do that that’s the total opposite of what you’d expect he says it’s going to be assigned Israel that they will be restored there will be a time for owning houses and property again when I restore Israel anyways let’s ask another question what’s at the root of naaman’s anger over yahweh’s method of healing Pride clearly Pride he says I had an idea of what was supposed to happen and remember he’s a great man so he his his idea perhaps carried a lot of weight in his mind consider who I am I thought things were going to happen a certain way but they didn’t and so he becomes angry it was his pride what then is required for Naaman to actually be healed what change in Naaman he has to Humble himself he has to submit to God’s way and he has to Humble himself so to be healed he needs to be humbled Naaman says that he wants some Earth from Israel in order to properly sacrifice the Yahweh what’s the connection here Edwin territory over here right balac and Balaam you’re talking about yeah right this appears to be just repeat your thought Dwayne this appears to be an erroneous but a common understanding of the time that that God’s had certain territories uh they were connected to certain lands and therefore if you were to properly worship that God you needed to be in that land or take some of that land with you and so he feels like it’s only appropriate for me to worship Yahweh if I have the soil of yahweh’s land um that is true in the sense that Yahweh was connected to the land of Israel it was the special land that he had given to Israel but certainly you don’t need the soil of Israel to worship Yahweh apparently Naaman seems to think so but again this shows even if he’s mistaken his commitment to worshiping Yahweh that there’s going to be a testimony to the people of Syria but why’d you bring all this Earth back and why are you sacrificing only on that piece of Earth and why are you sacrificing to this other God because he understands there is no other God but Yahweh so this is another fruit of naaman’s genuine belief and faith and trust in the Lord even if it is somewhat mistaken is a clear testimony of his trust in Yahweh now some bigger questions consider this miracle hang on to your question we might have some time in the end consider now this miracle with Naaman in the context the preceding miracles of chapter 2 3 and chapter four taken together what does this account show us about God yes there is a an extension that God not only cares for Israelites but he cares about Gentiles too what is the defining feature that results in God’s favor to both it is his Mercy but it is extended to whom humble right the risk goes back to one of the most basic principles that we’ve seen even since the beginning of the pentateuch that God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble and it doesn’t matter who they are or where they are Gentiles like Rahab like Ruth like Naaman they can have the same Grace and conversely stubborn Israelites who do not humble themselves before the Lord even though they are part of God’s covenant is special Covenant people they will miss out on God’s grace they’ll be opposed by God and they will be cursed by God and that’s exactly what we see here right name it technically an enemy of Israel receives God’s blessing because he humbles himself an Israelite a servant of God’s Prophet himself obtains God’s curse because he hardened his heart and he disobeyed Yahweh he decided to pursue greed rather than to trust in the Lord and to be satisfied in the Lord so we see here this divine principle emphasized in connection with all these other Miracles the Israelites those righteous Israelites who humble themselves they receive God’s Deliverance God’s provision and God’s blessing but also the Gentiles but those who did not humble themselves like the boys who made fun of Elisha like the wicked king of Israel and like kahazi may he obtain God’s curse now this is of course a principle that Israel and Exile needed to understand because remember that’s when the second Kings was written to it was written to the Israelites post-exile or in their exile he wants them to understand this principle follow after the Lord humble yourself trust in the Lord obey the Lord and He will deliver you he will provide for you don’t be stubborn in your heart don’t be like oh where is your light so we’re going to get God’s blessing no matter what no don’t be stubborn in heart because you’ll obtain the consequences just like some of the people mentioned here this was meant for the Israelites to understand this basic important Divine principle and of course it’s meant for us too we’ll explore that just a little bit later couple more questions running short on time so we’ll try and go through this a little bit more quickly naaman’s healing features many parallels to Salvation in Jesus as presented in the New Testament what are some parallels how is what happens to Naaman similar to what happens to someone who is saved by Jesus yeah right yeah those are that’s about true God is gracious in both circumstances to heal Naaman and also to save somebody from sin but it requires a obedience to God which requires a humbling before God they even had an idea of how he thought things were supposed to happen that’s to some people today have an idea of how salvation is supposed to work we often hear people say oh that’s too easy or that’s foolish what’s what a silly message that someone could actually believe this it says no if you say that and you remain stubborn in heart you miss out you will not obtain God’s Deliverance you will not obtain God’s salvation just as Naaman would not have obtained God’s healing so we do see the parallel there something else Roy that’s right we can also make a parallel between the Elisha not accepting any gift there’s no way that you can purchase or that you can earn God’s favor God’s salvation just his name and there’s no way that he could purchase the services of the Prophet or if you always your purchase yahweh’s healing it was merely on the basis of God’s um God’s mercy towards the humble and we can point out some other parallels Naaman is healing and cleansing from leprosy just as we need healing and cleansing from sin uh Naaman is an enemy of Israel just as we are enemies of God naaman’s healing is impossible without Supernatural intervention just as R salvation is impossible without God’s Supernatural intervention name is cleansed through water Christians are cleansed through baptism and we can point to a number of different things there are very many noteworthy parallels between salvation and Jesus and the healing of Naaman but not everything aligns perfectly to make this metaphor of salvation for example Naaman is told to dip seven times in the Jordan Christians don’t do anything seven times it’s part of obtaining their salvation Christians obtain salvation on the basis of the substitutionary sacrifice but there’s no substitution or sacrifice here no one takes on naaman’s sickness if Naaman truly had body covering leprosy as I’ve argued then he would have technically been ceremonially clean even though people outside of Jesus are totally unclean all the time and naaman’s leprosy would not have been deadly though annoying but our sin plague is very deadly and it will destroy us it ruins every part of our Lives eventually and it will damn us forever so the parallels are not complete even though there are a number of parallels so here’s the critical question can we say that the writer of First Kings intended to write the account of naaman’s healing as an analogy for salvation in Christ was it supposed to be a direct analogy it was not it was not intended as a direct analogy or a metaphor for salvation in Jesus to make this account directly about the gospel is to alter the originally intended meaning of the text which is isagesis it’s over spiritualizing but you may ask why are there so many parallels we see so many connections to Salvation in Jesus how can you say that it was not meant that way well the answer is because of the Gospel principles in this account God does not change he acts a certain way he always conforms to his own character and we see that character on display here just as we see it on display in the gospel there are elements of the Gospel here there are principles Divine principles Eternal truths gospel gospel principles whatever you want to call them that are evident here but they are not the the account is not a direct analogy to Jesus and the gospel of salvation this is the same thing that I argued and hopefully you persuaded by when we talked about Abraham’s offering Isaac on Mount Moriah a lot of parallels to Salvation in Jesus but was that

all right well we’re gonna get started welcome to Sunday school good morning today we transitioned from Elijah to Elisha title today’s class is God calls Elisha now it can be difficult to keep these two prophets straight they have very similar names somewhat similar Ministries but actually we can use their names to help us remember the differences between the men and their Ministries Elijah means Yahweh is God or my God is Yahweh L from the beginning of his name from Elohim is the title for God and yah at the end of Elijah’s name is short for Yahweh so basically L is yah Elohim is Yahweh Yahweh being the special name for God I am so that’s Elijah but Elisha means God Saves or my God is salvation again the L referring to Elohim and the Shah or the shua meaning savior or salvation and these names are emblematic of their Ministries Elijah calls the people back to Yahweh as the true God bail is not God Yahweh is God but Salvation didn’t really come to Israel during his days God began Revival through Elijah but the Salvation Harvest came during the ministry of Elisha whose name is God is salvation under Elisha Baal worship was eradicated in Israel and many people returned to Yahweh so Elijah is the Forerunner who reasserts the true God but Elisha is the next Runner who brings God’s salvation more fully you of course can see the parallel to the New Testament here John the Baptist comes in the spirit and power of whom Elijah and he acted just like Elijah did even dressed like Elijah but as a forerunner he was directing the people back to Yahweh on behalf of one who would bring Salvation and that’s Jesus the Messiah Elisha and Jesus actually have similar names an original Hebrew we have elishua God Saves and Yeshua which means salvation or Yahweh saves so we can see a parallel between the Old and New Testaments there hopefully that helps you keep the prophets straight Elijah comes first he’s directing the people Elisha comes second and that’s where we see more of the Salvation taking place but we’re talking more about Elisha today before we do let me just review specifically what we talked about last week last week we saw how God used Elijah to confront idolatry in Israel the main new God in Israel during Elijah’s time was Baal as a deity what was bail supposed to rule yeah Roy right it’s possible he was a Sun God but it seems more likely that he was the sky God the storm God similar to Zeus he had power over storms rain and was associated with fertility and what three ways then did God show this so-called Sky God to be completely powerless what was one way go ahead Joe yeah very good so the first thing is that as soon as they turn to the sky God to provide them with their rain there’s no rain for three and a half years because Elijah the god of or the prophet of Yahweh prays that there would be no rain so that first of all there’s no rain what’s another way that he shows God shows Baal to be impotent what happens on Mount Carmel yeah Rob uh yes there’s a there’s a competition there’s a contest between Bale and Yahweh over whose sacrifice is going to be accepted what are they actually looking for from God fire from heaven and again this should be bail strong point he’s the god of the sky he should be able to send fire or lightning from the sky to uh emulate the sacrifice but he’s not able but Yahweh is able and he does so emphatically if you remember not just burns the sacrifice but burns the whole large Altar and basically makes a crater and then what’s the third way that we see that Baal is not really God doesn’t really have power over the sky right he’s not able to overcome the drought and as soon as the people turn away from Baal they kill His prophets what happens the rain the rain comes so if they were really God he’s failed and all his his main ways he wasn’t able to keep the rain going when the people worshiped him he’s not able to send lightning or fire when the people call upon him and as soon as the people kill His prophets that’s when the rain comes so God couldn’t have said it more clearly Baal cannot do what he promises to do for you he has no power he doesn’t even exist I exist I have power love me and obey me and I will provide for you what you need this is what Yahweh was communicating we saw that this is not just true of Baal this one God this is true for every Idol whether that Idol is material or immaterial no Idol no Spirit no saint no so-called God no lust of our hearts can ever truly help us whatever it is we serve with the hope that it will save secure and satisfy us if it’s not God Yahweh it cannot and it will not like the prophets of Baal we can exert ourselves greatly for these false gods these lusts but they cannot help us they cannot do what they promise they are powerless there’s no one there and what they seem to give us sometimes is an illusion or what they what they seem to give us at times is actually an illusion it doesn’t last in a moment it can be taken away so serving any Idol is useless or to use the biblical language in other sections it is stupid let us not be taken in by bewitching idols and let us instead praise God for how he has turned us away from these vain Idols to the Living God to the God who actually is questions or comments about last week’s lesson right they have no power to help or save they do have the in one sentence they do the power to Captivate and deceive exactly that’s why we have to flee from Idols but they have no power to help yeah that’s a good clarification Bill other questions or comments so we see the false gods shown to be impotent we see the two true Gods would be powerful and that’s exactly Elijah’s Ministry God is Yahweh or Yahweh is God but now we turn to Elisha the lesson in the curriculum today calls for us to look at two different moments in Elijah’s Ministry first his uh um his his calling or his taking over for Elijah and then a specific healing but since we have a free day in our curriculum next week and there’s so much to talk about in just that first episode I’m actually splitting the lesson into two parts so uh we’re gonna deal with the second part next week today we’re just going to focus on um the the departure of Elijah and the stepping up of Elisha in the ministry so here’s our outline for today’s class we’ll first look at the context of Elijah’s departure get up to speed with the chapters that are intervening from where we were last time and where we are today then we’ll look at the account of Elijah’s departure and then we’ll finish by considering the application of that account for our lives today let’s pray father I pray that you would help me to be able to explain this word well Lord I pray that you would instruct us this word was meant for us as it was meant for Israel would help us to understand it correctly help us to apply it Lord as you have meant for us to so that we might be changed so that we’d be encouraged so that we’d be emboldened to follow after you and to to gain the reward in Jesus name amen please open your Bibles to Second Kings when the book of Second Kings now remember First Kings and second Kings are originally written as one book they’ve been split in our Bibles but second Kings chapter two won’t read the passage right away though because I want to give you the context first let’s talk about their passages context so we were talking about the contest between Bale and Yahweh at Carmel last time after Carmel perhaps expecting immediate widespread Revival but not seeing it Elijah flees from Jezebel who’s threatened to kill him and he despairs he tells God I’m The Only God fever left they seek to kill me I’m really no better than my father so please just take my life he’s very depressed God in response though miraculously feeds and provides drink for Elijah and he brings Elijah to Mount Horeb also called Mount Sinai and he meets with him there he has a number or there’s a little bit of a conversation there but ultimate’s Elijah to accomplish three anointings I want you to anoint three people God says anoint jehu king of Israel anoint has a l king of Syria and then anoint Elisha as a prophet in your place now why these three anointings why is this his commission why is that important well first Kings 19 17 tells us it shall come about the one who escapes from The Sword of Hazel jehoshal put to death and the one who escapes from The Sword of jehu Elisha shall put to death what’s he talking about here escaping from The Sword well this is the in the context the Baal worship Baal worshipers going to bring about the end of baalism in Israel they’re going to put to death the false teachers and they’re going to put to death the worshipers of Baal and they’re going to cause the people to turn away from Baal ultimately back to Yahweh so he’s commissioned to anoint these three people we do see Elijah immediately anoint Elisha by throwing his mantle on him putting his mantle about him now what’s a mantle it could be like a cape or a coat it’s some sort of large outer garment and when the word survives in our language today to mean like a coat or an Overcoat now this mantle was probably made out of sheep or camel skin remember Elijah was known for his hairiness probably referring to the hairiness of his clothes rather than and maybe that was part of it too he wore that leather belt and he wore probably animal skins so maybe this mantle was a sheep or camel skin mantle he puts it on Elisha in response to this mantle casting Elisha leaves his farm and he follows and serves Elijah now we should note that the Bible never mentions Elijah anointing jehu or Hazel he was commissioned to do that but we don’t see him do that in the Bible in fact it’s Elisha who later tells haziel that hazia will become king of Syria and it’s another Prophet under Elisha’s Direction it’s one of his disciples who later anoints jehu with oil so even though Elijah was commissioned it’s not actually he who does it it’s some other people but Elijah does anoint Elisha and Elisha follows and serves his master for about 20 years during this time confrontations and prophecies and Elisha is Keen to be trained by and to serve as master during these 20 years Ahab dies he succeeded by follow along with me as I read and it came about when the Lord was about to take up Elijah by a whirlwind to Heaven that Elijah went with Elijah from gilgal Elijah said to Elisha stay here please for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel but Elisha said as the Lord lives and as you yourself live I will not leave you so they went down to Bethel then the sons of the prophets who are at Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him do you know that the Lord will take away your master from you from over you today and he said yes I know be still Elijah said to him Elijah please stay here for the Lord has sent me to Jericho but he said as the Lord lives and as you yourself live I will not leave you so they came to Jericho the sons of the prophets who at Jericho approached Elisha and said to him do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today and he answered yes I know be still then Elijah said to him please stay here for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan and he said as the Lord lives and as you yourself live I will not leave you so the two of them went on Now 50 men of the sons of the prophets went and stood opposite them at a distance while the two of them stood by the Jordan Elijah took his mantle and folded it together and struck the waters and they were divided here and there so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground when they had crossed over Elijah said to Elisha ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you and Elijah said please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me he said you’ve asked a hard thing nevertheless if you see me when I’m taken from you it shall be so for you but if not it shall not be so as they were going along and talking behold there appeared a chariot of fire and Horses of fire which separated the two of them and Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven Elisha saw and cried out my father my father the Chariots of Israel and its Horsemen and he saw Elijah no more then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces he also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said where is the Lord the god of Elijah and when he also had struck the waters they were divided here and there and Elisha crossed over now when the sons of the prophets who write Jericho opposite him saw him they said the spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha and they came to meet him and bow themselves to the ground before him okay an amazing account it’s amazing it’s incredible that this actually happened that’s been recorded for us now there are some puzzling things in this account let’s start our analysis of this passage with just basic observations what literary device do we see featured back in verse one we’re told that Elijah is going to be taken up into heaven when you tell something that’s going to happen before it happens what’s that called or we could call that prophecy but literally what’s that called shadowing yeah I mean it’s kind of blatant foreshadowing but just basically saying that something’s going to happen and so the reader or the audience is expecting it who else knows that God is going to take Elijah away the sons of the prophets know they keep telling Elijah I mean Elisha I know I’m going to make that error several times today Elisha knows and probably Elijah does too now these likely do not know the mode of Elijah’s transference into heaven they don’t know how it’s going to happen but they know it’s going to happen now notice the phrase the sons of the prophets we see that phrase a number of times in the Old Testament history books it doesn’t understand that it doesn’t mean literal Sons it just means the Disciples of the prophets the followers of the prophets and they sometimes are prophets themselves now verse 1 says that Elijah is to go up in a whirlwind what does the Whirlwind yeah right that’s actually very good because the word can be translated hurricane we’re talking about a storm here definitely a windstorm but probably more than that we’re talking dark clouds we’re talking probably lightning this is a serious storm remember a whirlwind appears in another Old Testament book that we’ve looked at already God God is associated with that Whirlwind one was what was that job right job is uh saying he wants to meet with God and towards as the Book of Job goes along they start talking about a storm probably because the storm was approaching and then when the storm is there God speaks out of the storm it says he speaks from the Whirlwind this is a storm so this is the mode this is the mode of a lie just transference into heaven or at least part of it now what does Elijah keep trying to get Elisha to do yeah leave stay behind God has sent me to a certain place why don’t you stay behind here what’s Elijah’s response each time I’m gonna follow you no way I’m leaving you as the Lord lives he’s taking an oath as the Lord lives I’m not going to leave you by the way the cities that Elijah is traveling to Elijah and Elisha are not random as the pair travel to these different cities to what do they keep getting closer you can see it on the map the Jordan River which is where they’re ultimately going to end up right they’re moving towards the Jordan when they um arrive at the Jordan what Miracle does Elijah perform he strikes the Jordan River with his mantle and it parts and it Parts in such a way that they walk over on dry ground this should remind you of certain other Miracles namely which Joshua and the the people of Israel crossing the Jordan on dry ground and also earlier Moses and The Parting of the Red Sea or the Sea of reeds again they were the waters are parted and they crossed over on dry ground now Elijah offers to Grant Elisha a request before being taken for what does Elisha ask double portion of your spirit I want a double portion of your spirit please let a double portion of your spirit be on me now we need to be very careful about this phrase double portion because it sounds like that Elijah is asking for twice as much of Elijah’s Spirit as Elisha has but the phrase double portion is used other times in the Bible and so looking at that at those instances might help us understand this phrase the most helpful passage is in Deuteronomy so keep your fingers in Second Kings but turn to Deuteronomy chapter 21 for a moment this is Page 206 if you’re using the Pew Bibles actually I think 207 Deuteronomy chapter 21 verses 15 to 17.

starting at verse 15 let’s read if a man has two wives the one loved and the other unloved and both the loved and the unloved have borne him Sons if the firstborn son belongs to the unloved then it shall be in the day he Wills what he has to his sons he cannot make the son of the love the firstborn before the son of the unloved who is the firstborn but he shall acknowledge the firstborn the son of the unloved by giving him a double portion of all that he has for he is the beginning of his strength to him belongs the rights of the firstborn so we’re talking here in this passage about inheritance law if you were a Hebrew with multiple wives some argue whether this is you had a wife she died he took a second wife or God’s plan someone has multiple wives what do you do in that situation when it comes to inheritance if the first one is from the wife you don’t love as much you can’t replace that first one with the son of the wife you do love or the one you love more he still retains the right of the firstborn and what is the right of the firstborn according to these verses okay double portion of all that the father has now can this portion be double of all that the father owns no why not exactly it’s impossible it’s physically impossible he can’t give you what he doesn’t have he can only give you what he does have he can’t give you double than what he has so what can or what must double portion mean in this instance uh Craig exactly the firstborn gets twice of what any of the other children receive now some of you may know there’s a very practical reason that the firstborn gets double the amount of wealth and possessions that the other children receive what is the reason it’s not simply just lucky you get the nice you get the nice portion because well I like you it’s partly yes it has to do with the idea of taking over because as the firstborn as the oldest son he is succeeding his father as the leader of the family and if you’re the leader then you have to take care of the whole family especially those who are not able to take care of themselves remember in this Society it was not normal for any female to inherit anything The Inheritance passed the males only so who’s going to provide for the females the leader of the family if the father has died and the widowed mother Remains the firstborn has to take care of her or his sisters who are yet unmarried he must take care of them and provide the um and provide for their marriages he needs to fulfill certain tribal and Clan obligations he has a reason that he’s given extra wealth because he has extra duties he has to do something with that wealth so yes it is a place of honor and a place of blessing but it’s also a place of increased responsibility and difficulty so let’s turn back to Second Kings now a family inheritance for a family inheritance a double portion is twice what the others would have received and it is the right of the firstborn the successor to the father blessing but also obligation Elijah asked for a double portion of Elijah’s Spirit notice Elijah’s response you have asked for a hard thing Elijah says Elisha will only receive this double portion if Elijah does what if you see me depart you know that you will receive what you have asked you have received what you have asked but you have to see me you have to see me depart from you as they go on and talk he doesn’t immediately depart they continue walking and talking what separates the two men that’s right a chariot of fire drawn by fiery horses it then says a whirlwind carried Elijah up to heaven how does Elijah respond to Elijah’s departure Elijah respond does a couple things yeah he cries out my father my father you can see some emotion there what else he tears his clothes that is an expression of grief and he identifies the Chariot this fiery Chariot as being what this is the Chariot of Israel and it’s Horsemen the mantle of Elijah while Elijah is taken up by this Chariot and by the Whirlwind the mantle the Overcoat the outer garment of Elijah Falls as Elijah is being taken away Elisha takes the mantle back to the Jordan River and he asks where’s the god of Elijah and like Elijah he strikes the Jordan River with the mantle and what happens the exact same thing happens the water separate and is able to pass over on dry ground what do the sons of the prophets recognize when they see Elisha Spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha now notice they say Spirit they don’t say mantle hey the mantle of Elijah’s on them no they say the spirit of Elijah is on him and what do they do to Elijah Elisha they bow to him about him okay we’ve made these basic observations let’s now take them and try and answer some interpretive questions first why does Elijah keep trying to leave Elisha behind seems kind of an odd thing to do what are some possible explanations Roy do you have something ah it could be a test a test of his commitment or perhaps we could say that he’s trying to make the departure easier saying goodbye is always hard sometimes people are trying to avoid the pain of it I want to spare you Elisha so why don’t you just stay here while I go Ascend over in the Jordan he may be trying to get rid of Elijah Elisha or as Roy was saying maybe he’s not trying to get rid of Elijah Elisha it’s a test it’s a test of his perseverance it’s a test of his commitment Elijah is thinking when I ask you to stay behind especially when I know that you know that I’m leaving what will you do you care enough about me and the ministry to stick with me until the end this is a test when Elijah asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit for what is Elisha really asking yeah he’s he’s asking for the responsibility of taking Elijah’s place I want to be your successor I want to succeed you as the leader of the family of prophet so to speak or as the leader of the family of Israel in a spiritual sense I want to succeed you as God’s Prophet inheriting both your special empowerment but also the difficult responsibilities that come with being God’s prophet after all as we’ve seen Elijah’s Ministry is not an easy one he’s a prophet constantly on the Run he’s fleeing from death threats from the King Searchers looking for him he has to confront sin he has to rebuke evil rulers he has to destroy false prophets he has to deal with the continually compromising Israelites is this really what you want to inherit Elisha but Elisha is saying by asking for this double portion yes I do want to be your successor I want to be faithful to the Lord as you were faithful Elijah I want to declare God’s message as you did come what may let me be empowered as you were to minister to this people Elijah’s response is that Elisha has asked for a hard thing why is this a hard thing what it’s not yeah I think that we can at least point to two different things but one is as we’ve just said it’s a difficult job it’s a be God’s Prophet it’s a hard job not only because you have to deal with all the trials and the dangers but you’re more accountable to God you’re standing against God’s prophet but it also is as you pointed out George it’s not really up to Elijah God raises up his own prophets you can’t just say oh I’ll be a prophet of God you can be willing but it’s ultimately God who chooses so this is a hard thing for Elisha or Elijah to fulfill but Elijah promises that if Elijah sees Elijah depart then Elisha will have what he asks why this condition again that seems a little bit odd what are some possible explanations you have to see me depart if you really are going to receive what you ask yeah Dwayne right so going back to the last thing we were just saying if God’s the one who ultimately chooses the prophet then if God allows you to see this miraculous thing then that’s a sign that God is giving you what you ask there may be an element too again of the idea of perseverance you have to keep your eyes on me you got to stay with me you have to actually see me depart if you really want to have this ministry remember recall too that Elijah is going up in a whirlwind so this not may not have been the easiest thing in the world to keep his uh his eyes on Elijah here we’re talking about a storm normally in storms you you hide you go for cover and this is a a terrific storm Like a Hurricane it’s going to take some perseverance it’s going to take some courage to keep your eyes on Elijah in that instance not to mention there’s a fiery Chariot involved so there could be more the idea of this perseverance this test but also this idea of it’s really God who decides and if God lets you see me depart then you can be sure that God is granting you the position of profit after me now why does God choose a chariot of fire for Elijah why a chariot what is the Chariot associated with well it is a mode of transportation and a fast one of that so uh Elijah is being transported speedily up to heaven so a chariot is appropriate in that sense but why else it is a war machine right It’s associated with strength with power so when God is doing something powerful it’s appropriate that he would use a chariot we actually see fiery chariots not too long afterwards in the ministry of Elisha there are enemies of Israel who have encamped against Elisha in a certain City and it looks like they’re about to fall but then God grants a vision to one of the Servants of Elisha and he says let him see what I see and all around the city are fiery chariots and fiery Horsemen this is a testimony to the power of God a symbolic one God’s an actually need chariots it’s like oh if I don’t know materials I can’t do anything no God can just speak and things happen but it’s a symbol it’s a symbol of God’s power to accomplish whatever he needs to accomplish especially on behalf of Israel because remember these are identified as the Chariots of Israel now you say well God has chariots but Israel is not allowed to have chariots why can God have chariots well I think it’s not that difficult they are to trust in God’s chariots rather than their own right these are the real Chariots of Israel the fiery chariots they’re the ones that are going to protect you don’t try and obtain chariots for yourselves as if that’s going to protect you no that’s a false security there’s another association with chariots though I’m not just associated with power what else are they associated with who normally or Judy they are associated with war yeah and uh maybe we could say that there’s something with war here uh as in a spiritual sense basically Elijah has been at war with the the idolatrous government in the northern tribes and he’s been on he’s been in a war on behalf of souls so I think that’s useful to point out who normally rides in chariots what I’m sorry I can’t hear you royalty yes Kings ride in chariots commanders ride in chariots there were some also um Regular Warriors who wrote in chariots but it was a position of prestige to ride in a chariot is to be an honored individual um and this is true even into the classical age it goes a long way through history a position in a chariot his position of Honor so there’s an element of honoring Elijah by taking him up in a chariot you are invited into the Chariot of God you were picked up by The Chariot of God that is a that is a sign of exaltation are being transported by a chariot when Elisha okay so let me just sum that up by taking Elijah up in a chariot God shows his power he uses an appropriate vehicle for Speed and he gives Elijah honor when Elisha another interpreted question now when Elisha uses Elijah’s Mantle to strike the water the water divides just as it did the first time was there then special power in Elijah’s Mantle or was the power somewhere else the power is not on the mantle even though he’s using the same mantle and it does the same thing the power’s not in the mantle there are a number of items that are used to accomplish Miracles throughout the Old Testament if the power is not in the item the powers non-air and staff the power is not in um modes of Staff whenever he’s using it the power is in God and it’s been channeled through these prophets God has chosen to lay his power lay his authority to do these miracles on His prophets and so when they use various items those things have a miraculous ability the power is not really in the item again it’s notable that when the prophets see Elisha they don’t say oh the mantle of Elijah is on Elisha they say the spirit the spirit of Elijah is on Elisha he has the the oh so if the mantle then is not really the source of power why mention the mantle at all it’s a symbol right what is it a symbol of he’s the successor and therefore he has what as a successor he has the the spirit of the Lord uh what are you going to say Roy right right right so he he’s taking on this new role in its power and in its Authority the mantle is a symbol of that by the way as you probably already guessed this this seems to be the origin where we get of taking on the mantle take on the mantle of responsibility or of authority so it’s not really the power of the mantle in fact I don’t think the mantle is mentioned anywhere else in the Old Testament after this point but it was a symbol of this transfer of authority and let’s see okay yeah so the same mantle that divided the Jordan under Elijah divides the Jordan under Elisha because they have the same power in authority you have the Jordan why does all this take place at the Jordan River there was a definite determination to bring them to this spot but why is there any reason why something should take something like this should take place at the Jordan well as we’ve already mentioned the Jordan is not just some random River what already took place here the people of Israel entered in the Promised Land by way of a miracle of crossing over on dry ground and that was also part of a change in Israel’s government really before the crossing of the Jordan yeah Dwayne exactly the Jordan was very much associated with a succession Moses Authority was passed on to Joshua in fact remember the reason for the miracle in the first place was to show that God was with Joshua when people saw the river being divided they said oh the Lord’s with Joshua just like he was with Moses and they responded in the same way that the sons of the prophets respond to Elisha here they recognize the power and authority and they show deference so it’s not random that this is happening at the Jordan the Jordan is a place of transition not just because it’s a river but because there already was a transition in leadership at this site so it is appropriate that these things are happening at the Jordan River so as we’ve already alluded to does Elisha receive what he requests indeedy does his office as or is given the succession the office has profit office of profit and it is validated by the miracle that takes place at the Jordan and by the words and the behavior of the sons of the prophets they recognize the spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha he is indeed the prophetic successor yes bill that’s a really interesting point I had not thought about that certainly um right right um because the Jordan is associated with succession Moses to Joshua Elijah to Elisha can we say that for the same reason Jesus is baptized into Jordan and that in a sense it’s a succession from John the Baptist to Jesus himself if so I have to think about that a little bit more that certainly makes sense at first glance certainly we know this isn’t the only place that succession takes place historically I mean the other people succeeding in other areas but we certainly see that a number of times it is a place of um Ministry beginning or Ministry transferring what are we going to say Dwayne okay that’s good another one other trusted people say the same thing that’s usually a good sign so as Maine was mentioning other commentaries have noted that the connection between these different successions um Moses and Joshua Elijah and Elisha and John the Baptist and Jesus all taking place at the Jordan River so Elisha does indeed um succeed Elijah and Elijah would Elijah would go on to do many miracles many of the same kinds of Miracles as Elijah but also more miracles or at least more are recorded for Elijah than Elijah Elisha also has a share of Trials he indeed takes on the mantle the the same role as Elijah various Kings try to kill Elisha Elisha and vindicates Elisha’s trust he delivers Elisha from the hands of these Kings the parallel between Elijah and Elisha is so strong that when Elijah I’m sorry when Elisha is sick with the illness with which he is about to die so the end of his ministry the king of Israel visits Elisha and he says to him my father my father the Chariots of Israel and its Horsemen that’s the exact same thing that Elisha said when Elijah was going up to heaven the king of Israel says that to Elisha well what’s the point well I think it’s that he’s he’s um stating that Elisha was indeed just like his master he fulfilled his role just like his master and he was being translated to heaven in a way similar to his master he’s not going up in a fiery Chariot but through his death he says I know that you’re being transferred you’re being translated now in a way by the Chariots of Israel so Elisha like Elijah was an extremely faithful and Powerful prophet though Elisha got to enjoy some measure of Revival under his ministry you got to see a little bit more of God’s merciful salvation extend throughout the northern tribes Elijah didn’t see that as much now in comparing the two Prophets some have suggested Elijah was actually a failure as a prophet and they can point to a number of kind of startling things in Elijah’s Ministry as we’ve noted during his ministry Elijah insist that he’s the only prophet of Yahweh or the only God fever left even though he’s shown multiple times that that’s not the case they keep saying I’m the only one left they want to kill me when God leads Elijah to Horeb Mount Sinai and he asked Elijah what are you doing here Elijah Elijah gives this very depressed answer I have been very zealous for the Lord the god of hosts for the sons of Israel have forsaken your Covenant torn down your altars and killed your prophets with a sword and I alone am left and they seek my life to take it away God then does some powerful things on Sinai powerful and mysterious there’s a blasting wind that splits the mountain rocks there’s an earthquake there’s a fire and then there’s a gentle blowing which symbolizes God’s presence but whatever message God was communicating to Elijah Elijah doesn’t seem to get it because when God asks Elijah the same question what are you doing here Elijah Elijah gives the exact same answer I’ve been very zealous for the Lord everybody’s turned away from you I’m the only one left and it’s after that that God commissions Elijah to do those three anointings but Elijah does only one who didn’t do the other two did you just give up on that Elijah perhaps then we’ve been too generous with looking at Elijah’s interactions with Elisha maybe Elijah’s been cranky the whole time maybe he didn’t really care whether Elijah kept following him or not maybe he was so grumpy that he tried to get a get rid of Elisha on purpose because he didn’t want him to succeed him he didn’t want him to succeed as the prophet or have the empowerment of God in this view then Elijah was just a good Prophet turned bad that God basically had to give up on because Elijah was too unwilling too disobedient or too demoralized to continue in Ministry now I admit Elijah does show weakness at times there are times she’s depressed there’s times where he’s discouraged and there are some puzzling aspects to his ministry But ultimately I believe this assessment of Elijah is wrong Elijah was not a failure while he doubted at times and got depressed at times he was ultimately a faithful prophet what are some things we can point to to vindicate Elijah and his ministry what are some signs that he was not a disobedient faithless Prophet yeah Dwayne scripture yeah that’s a very useful reference we’ll be looking at it a little bit later but that section in James when talking about prayer and encouraging Christians to pray it says consider Elijah this righteous man and his prayers were effective he’s identified as righteous what else can we point to yeah George say that again that’s right we certainly saw that God was with him when he was confronting Baal worship he was acting faithfully and powerfully there what were you gonna say Danny frankly Jesus as we’ve noted um or the New Testament talks about Elijah or John the Baptist being in the spirit and power of Elijah if Elijah was a faithless prophet that’s hardly somebody that you’d want to come in the spirit and power of certainly a great man Jesus says he was the greatest of all the prophets and he says he came just like Elijah did so that’s a Vindication of Elijah Dwayne you have something else right yeah let’s consider this whole thing this whole transfer into heaven via Chariot of fire that’s the sign of something right that’s a sign of Honor that’s a that’s quite a blessing to not experience death and go straight into God’s presence that hardly seems appropriate to someone who is faithless in Ministry um Judy were you gonna say something that’s right on the amount of transfiguration there are two people that appear with Jesus as Jesus is appearing in splendor we have Moses and who’s the other one not Isaiah not Ezekiel not Daniel not even Elisha it’s Elijah he’s representing all the latter prophets that again is not appropriate if Elijah was a failure in Ministry if he basically gave up and God had to give up on him that doesn’t make sense Elijah has an honored place at the end of his life um in the time afterwards and as Dwayne mentioned there are some in the future or there’s a there’s references to Elijah coming again when there will be prophets in the uh in the end times during the time the tribulation I think that’s what you’re talking about Dwayne correct me if I’m wrong but it talks about Elijah coming again again it doesn’t make sense if Elijah was a faithless prophet no I would say he was quite a faithful prophet and he was one of the greatest of the prophets but what about this failure to anoint why didn’t he anoint the three people and he only anointed one how do we explain that well there is one explanation one is that he did anoint them and we just don’t hear about it maybe we just assumed that the narrator says you’ve been commissioned to do these things he did it guys I don’t have to tell you about it well that’s one possible explanation but there’s another explanation and I think this is more likely Elijah fulfilled this commission through his successor Elijah’s commissioned to anoint these three men was fulfilled by the later Ministry of Elisha because Elijah in a way is just an extension of Elijah’s Ministry not only did Elijah call Elisha but Elijah also taught and trained Elisha Elijah’s Spirit was said to be on Elisha therefore I think it’s appropriate for us to see successor Elisha Elijah passed on the unfinished work to the one whom Elijah by God’s spirit trained up specifically for that task or for those tasks and isn’t this true for us also today it’s a day when we train up someone to follow after the Lord we may lose contact with that person or we might even die but our investment in that person continues to have its impact how many people have been inspired to go into the mission field because of the Diaries the writings and the biographies of dead believers like Abel as the right of Hebrews says though these men and women are dead their faith still speaks and it has an effect on the coming Generations through their successors still impacting the world as others have pointed out I think this is partly why Believers don’t receive their full reward until Christ’s return we need the BMC judgment to fully assess what we did that deserves a reward not just while we were alive but even after we died how our Legacy continued to impact other Generations you can’t fully assess that until time has run its course this gives us more reason than to take our Christian Life seriously and to believe in you that our obedience to the Lord is not in vain it’s part of our leaving a important and Powerful Legacy for Christ so because of this idea of impact beyond the grave I don’t believe Elijah was unfaithful in his calling Elijah did finish his work through his trained successor Elisha so I don’t think it was a failure at all so let’s sum up what we’ve seen in this passage I’ll go back to the previous slide Elijah as part of a final test or training for Elisha attempts to leave Elisha in various places but Elisha perseveres he says I’m not going to leave you I’m fully committed when asked point blank what Elisha wants Elisha gives a good answer I want to be your successor to the work of God’s prophet by God’s help I will suffer for God as you have and do his work in order that the people of Israel might be saved this is a hard thing for Elisha to ask as it means great difficulties for Elisha and it means that only God can truly grant that request but Elisha perseveres through that final task and is allowed to see the momentous translation of Elijah to Heaven via a chariot of fire a vehicle symbolic of God’s power and of Elijah’s honor Elisha does receive his request to the succession Elisha succeeds Elijah as Prophet as validated by The Miracle at the Jordan River a place long associated with succession and God’s power God’s power and Elijah’s Same Spirit of passion and empowerment rested on Elisha the mantle was only a symbol of that succession Elijah was no failure he was a man just like us it was weak at times but ultimately faithful he was a worthy Prophet to succeed and imitate and Elijah’s Legacy or rather God’s Legacy through Elijah continued to speak and work through Elisha and others after Elijah was taken to heaven questions or comments about what we’ve looked at yes Jim okay good question when I talk about the Chariots of Fire and horses being symbolic of God’s power does that mean that when they see these chariots that they’re not actually seeing something real that these aren’t real chariots or that they don’t have a real role um it’s just a symbol of God’s power I would say that we know that God has certain means of doing things even though those means are not actually the sources of power so God sends out his angels right the Angels they are the ministers they’re they’re angels that are said to have swords and they’re described as actually using these swords to kill the angel of the Lord who brings a plague to Israel after David or an axis census it says that he has his sewer drawn and he’s he’s about to cut more but he’s just paused for a moment so you could say is it that sword that’s powerful that sword that that angel has well the power indeed is with an Angel and the means is that sword but really it’s the power of God so what I guess I’m trying to say is these chariots really do things these angels really do things they’re not merely symbols they’re not um merely Visions but it’s not like we should say oh because this Angel has a chariot he’s more powerful than this Angel who only has a sword the the power is not in the vehicle itself it’s not in the um it’s not in the servant himself it’s ultimately in God and he uses a chariot not because he needs chariots but because the Israelites would have recognized that as a powerful vehicle so I guess to sum up again what I’m trying to say is it’s a real thing but it has a symbolic art the reason it exists is to communicate something through its symbolism I guess that’s what I would say yeah boy hurricane and it’s a good comment the the storm that should be associated with Bale or Bale claims to have some power over we see again happening here in The Chariot of fire that has to do with Something Heavenly that actually ascends into heaven that might be again showing the dot the complete uh supremacy of God over Baal yeah there definitely could be a connection to that here running a little bit short on time so if you have other questions please see me afterwards but I do want to talk briefly about some application what difference should this passage make to our lives today what does God’s word mean for the real world I have three application questions though we could probably pick out more based on the passage first are all Christians a kind of prophetic successor today or are all Christians prophetic successors of a kind or are certain Christians successors we’ll just I’ll answer this myself since we’re short on time despite the claims of some no one receives direct Revelation from God today as Elijah and Elijah did we don’t have that kind of prophetic succession and it’s true that there is some distinction within God’s people God has uniquely gifted and called some to serve as teachers in the church they have greater Authority but also greater responsibility and they will endure stricter judgment as James says but it’s also true that all Christians are prophetic successors of a kind the perfect revelation of God has come through God’s son the culmination of everything the Old Testament said Jesus commissioned Apostles to declare this message of Salvation and those Apostles charge their disciples to pass on the message to the Next Generation and those disciples charge their disciples and their disciples charge their disciples each generation receiving and passing on what was once and for all delivered to them by Christ if you’re a Christian you have become part of that succession you have received the word of Salvation and you are obligated to be faithful to it you are obligated to declare it and you are obligated to pass it on to the next generation this means that like Elijah and Elisha you have duties which you cannot ignore if you do you will miss out on your reward your heavenly father will discipline you or you may found to not even belong to God and you will suffer the Judgment as do the rest as part of this succession you will encounter difficulty in opposition as these prophets also did you’ll be persecuted by evil rulers you will need to confront sin you will experience the pain of an apathetic and hard-hearted generation but with this inheritance also comes blessing not just duty but blessing in this life you’ll be blessed with the Lord’s provision you will take care of you and he will deliver you through every evil attack until he takes you home you will be blessed in this life to know that you do belong to God when you experience what the prophets experienced you know that your partner is with them and not with the false prophets or the people of the world you’ll be blessed in this life to know God himself to Revel in who he is what he has done and what he will do on behalf of his people and you’ll be blessed when your life has ended because you’ll be translated into eternity Elisha you will receive your reward you will gain honor you will gain eternal life you will have Christ’s word of commendation you will sit with Christ on Christ’s Throne you will experience his presence forever so indeed all of us in some way are just like Elijah and Elijah we have received a commission that comes with responsibilities difficulties and blessings I’ll just mention these two other questions how does our condition compare to that of the prophets the prophets seem superhuman almost alien to us can never do what they did can’t be like them or maybe there are certain Christians today they they can do what God calls them to do but I just can’t no these props are just like us they the power was not in them it was in God and that same power is in Us by God’s spirit not Revival not conversions not confessions professions of faith it is faithfulness to God because Elijah did not have a very successful Ministry from a human perspective and yet he was honored above many if not all the other prophets of the Old Testament it was about faithfulness and he was faithful and so that’s an encouragement to us we just go out and sow the seed we water the seed but it has to be God who manages the crop he can allow it to be a famine a small yield or bumper crop he gives Revival at certain times and he withholds Revival at other times the success is not dependent on the man it’s dependent on God’s mercy it’s dependent on God’s good purpose and what will glorify him please let’s close in prayer next week or I’ll shall say this next week we’ll say one more thing about Elisha we’ll talk about Naaman the Syrian and how Elisha heals him let’s pray father thank you for this word it is an encouraging word it is a sobering word God I pray that we would that you would enable us to be faithful to the commission that has been handed down to us that we would make disciples that we would confront sin that we would declare your goodness to this apathetic and evil generation and I pray father that if you will at lord of the Harvest please Grant repentance Grant Revival use us to expand your kingdom but Lord whatever you choose to do cause us to be faithful in Jesus name amen
