okay this morning let’s take our Bibles and turn to Amos the Pew Bible page 9913 and I do recommend this morning that because I’m going to do nine chapters today in one message and I want to give you the sense of what it says in Amos because once you give it give a message like Amos in one chunk you get a good sense of what the whole book says so I really want you to look up the verses when I mention them and I’m going to try to very much stay right here in Amos but let me have a word of prayer Lord this morning as we come before you and we approach your word and we hear from one of your Prophets that we realize that Lord the message that he gave to the people back then is the message we need to hear right now Lord because it’s so applicable to us in our day and age in which we live in our country and so Lord I pray we would take it to heart that we would put oursel in the equation and that we would realize that if we have drifted from you or if we have never come to call you upon call you our Lord and savior and repent of our sin and trust in you then I pray Lord today may be that day but Lord also for those who are serving you that they would realize a seriousness of what the prophets say to the people and I pray Lord that you would work it into our heart that we would be Christians that have a hope but have a soberness about life and I pray this in Christ’s name amen now before I I actually look into Amos I want to just mention first of all what is a prophet all of you may think right now in your mind that a prophet is someone who uh predicts the future but do you realize from scripture that a prophet may be someone who never tells the future another idea you may that may be in your mind is that a prophet is a spokesman for God in fact that is the ethology of the word Pro means in the place of another and of course the second part of the word is to speak so a prophet is one who speaks in the place of another Aaron was Moses’s prophet in a sense and he spoke for him and Moses was God’s prophet and Moses spoke for God now don’t get me wrong I am not saying that a prophet does not at times tell the future and that a prophet does not speak uh does not speak for God what I want you to grasp is that a prophet is much more than this and the question should be what is true of all prophets whether it be Old Testament or new testament I think when we discover that we’ll dis discover the definition of a prophet so so what is running through the verses in Amos and all the prophets is this particular phrase if you look at Amos chapter 1 verse number three it says thus says the Lord in verse number six thus says the Lord in verse number nine thus says the Lord in verse number 11 thus says the Lord and 13 th thus says thus says the Lord so all through the prophets the prophet is definitely speaking in behalf of God so a prophet is one called by God to Bear forth his message the office and sometimes it’s a temporary office sometimes it is a permanent office was a gift of God and involved both the future aspect as well as the present revelatory message it was forth telling uh foretelling and it was forthtelling so what is a prophet Prophet was conscious that his message came from God thus says the Lord is used 1,200 times in the Bible so the Lord first speaks to the prophet and then the PO Prophet turns around and speaks to the people God directly God speaks directly to the prophet that’s divine revelation from God and if that’s what a prophet is you would expect the word of God to speak toward that end in fact when Moses said there was going to be a prophet greater than me speaking of Jesus he said this in Deuteronomy the Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you from your countrymen you shall listen to him and then it says I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you and I will put my words in his mouth and he shall speak to them all that I have commanded him so in other words a prophet is someone who gets direct Revelation from God and then he speaks it directly to the people without messing it up so he doesn’t give commentary on it he gives the people what God says so a prophet was a Statesman a prophet a prophet was a preacher to speak to the people to warn them often and called them to repentance a prophet always worked within the groundwork of the law never apart from it and also a prophet speaks when there is a prior situation involved God never gives a word to the prophet for the prophet but for the king or for for for the priest or for the people like Israel and Judah and also for the Nations God speaks when there’s a problem amongst the people some crisis some problem some need so the whole prophetic Ministry of a prophet is a loving God meeting the needs of his people speaking through this individual God speaks direct Revelation but on but but is occasioned by relating a related need of the people if the people need food well God will speak about food if the people need discipline then God will speak about their sin and repentance if they need hope he will speak about the future deliverer if they need encouragement he will speak about encouragement and if they need Grace he will speak of the coming time of Grace in the coming Messiah so a prophet is a person to whom God gives this gift and whatever the need is God speaks directly to that person the prophet and he in turn takes the message to the people or to the king or to the priest or to a nation so the Minor Prophets there’s 12 of them 12 individual prophets to Israel and Judah they serve both as as predictions of judgment and as well as Promises of Hope for the future so what does that mean for you and me well if a loving God addresses and meets the needs of his people he will do the same today and he will do the same always so then the Minor Prophets are still relevant for us us today because they address the issues of the heart and Society they remind us that God is still God is a God who still holds people responsible for their behavior especially those who claim to belong to him some of God’s fiercest judgments have been upon his own people because they should know better they have the truth so the call of the prophets are calling us really even to today to repent to return to experience God’s grace and forgiveness which then lays the groundwork for Revival and restoration and for Hope for the future so let’s look at the prophet amus in your Bibles verse number one chapter one here we see the historical background being given to us that background would answer the question who’s the author who is he writing to when was he writing and so the three issues the these three historical issues come up right in the first verse it says the words of Amos who was among the sheep herders from tcoa which he envisioned envisions concerning Israel now remember Israel is the northern kingdom in the days of Uzziah king of Judah Judah is the southern Kingdom in the days of jerob Jobo son of joash king of Israel and then it says this two years before the earthquake so Amos is speaking to the people two years before an earthquake all right now just for a note probably this terrible earthquake is in the time of Uzziah all right and this is what it says Zachariah actually mentions this earthquake and it says in Zachariah you don’t need to turn there it says you will flee by the valley of my mountain for in the Valley of the mountain you will reach to Asel yes you will flee just as you fled before the Earth quake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah then the Lord my God will come and all the holy ones with him in other words this Quake was of such a magnitude that it is mentioned by the prophet Zachariah 200 years later that’s significant that is significant in fact Josephus who was a Jewish historian he wrote this about this earthquake he says a great earthquake shook the ground and and a rent was made in the temple and the bright rays of the sun Shone through it and fell upon the king’s face in so much that leprosy seized him immediately so we know that Uzziah did uh have leprosy uh because he did something he ought not to do so the mention of this earthquake points to the intern connection between this event and the prophet’s own prophetic Mission scripture teaches the earthquakes when the Lord comes in judgment upon the Nations Amos chapter 8 if you notice there Amos 8 in verse number 8 it says because of this because of this will not the land quake and everyone who dwells in it mourn indeed all of it will rise like the Nile and it will be tossed about and sub and subside like the Nile of Egypt so the earthquake which shook Jerusalem two years after the appearance of Amos was the Judgment threatened by God against two kingdoms of Israel and the actually the excavation of hazor in that area seemed to indicate the earthquake occurred around 760 BC which is the time uh that Amos is actually Pro prophesying now the target for Amos is the northern kingdom Amos though was from the southern Kingdom and so he lived in takoa the Bible says about 10 mil 10 miles south of Jerusalem and he preached in bethl in the presence of the king so that means that the purpose of the message of Amos was to announce God’s impending judgment on Israel for their unrighteous deeds and a call for repentance from the nation see that’s what the theme of this particular book is now what’s the historical situation of the book important to know to get the message well if you look in chapter 2 verse number 8 and then chapter 5 verse number 21 the first sit situation how was it spiritually how were they doing spiritually in Amos chapter 2:8 it says on garments taken as pledges they stretched out beside every Al alar and in the house of their God they drank the wine of those who have been fined now you may say well what is that saying well number one it says every altar there’s only supposed to be one and then also they they drink wine in the house of God N I don’t think so all right so these people looks like spiritually they are taking advantage of people and they’re doing what they think they want to do all right then the next passage of scripture if you notice in Amos 5: 21 it says this verse look at verse 22 Chapter 5 Verse 22 it says even though you offer up my burnt offerings and your grain offerings I will not accept them and I will not even look at the peace offerings of your fatlings take away from me the no of your songs I will not even listen to the sound of your Harps now if I were to ask you the question are the people going to the temple yes they’re going to the temple all right they’re offering up festivals their their sacrifices their off they’re bringing their offerings and it says here they’re singing the only problem is God is not happy with them they’re INSP spiritual apathy so are are they offering things to the true god Jehovah uh Yahweh yes they are all kinds of religious activity is directed toward the true God it says the name is 5:22 you’re offering it to me so now we’re getting at really what the prophet is going to speak to the people were worshiping the true God in the wrong way their hearts were far from God and they were worshiping with empty formality so spiritually things were terrible in Israel and the reason why is because the passage we read this morning in their scripture reading Jobo did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord and what did he do remember Jobo was from the north riab was in the South and if we read the passage of scripture before these guys did not take the counsel of the wise men of Israel but took their own counsel the counsel of the young people in Israel and the kingdom split northern kingdom split from the southern Kingdom all right now what happened when that took place the Bible says this and I’ll just re re reiterate it was read it says rabom king of Judah and they will kill me that’s Jobo and return to rabom King of Judah so the king consulted and made two golden calves and said to them is it too much for you to go up to Jerusalem behold your Gods oh Israel that brought you up from the land of Egypt and he set in bethl and the other he put in Dan now this thing became the Bible says sin for the people went to worship before before the the one as far as Dan in other words this is what jerob bone was saying listen don’t go down to the South to Jerusalem to worship I’m going to make golden Cals one over here and one over there it’s going to be close you don’t have to go all that far and pay all that money to do all those things you’re going to stay right here uh and because if you don’t they’re going to come and kill me and you’re going to get won over by riab and go down and worship God now in saying that look at chapter 2 in verse number 11 Amos chapter 2: 11 then I raised up some of your sons to be prophets and some of your young men to be nazarites is this not so oh sons of Israel declares the Lord but you made the nazarites drink wine nazarites aren’t supposed to drink wine and then it says this and you commanded the prophets saying you shall not prophesy what were they saying we don’t want to hear from you we’re doing our own thing everything’s going well here we’re worshiping we’re going to the temple we’re doing all those things but they’re worshiping calf idols I mean they didn’t break away from Egypt too much at all did they now I want you to notice in chapter 2 verse 11 which I just read look at chapter 4:4 it says enter bethl now bethl is where the golden calf is and transgress and then in gilgal and gilgal was also an idolatry section it says gilgal multiplied transgression bring your sacrifice every morning your tithes every 3 days now you could not do that if you went to Jerusalem because J Jerusalem was some uh distance away so he was making it easier for them to go through the motions in worship and what else was he doing look at chapter 5 verse 26 it says you also carry along sikou the king of kaiwan your images the stars of your Gods which you made for yourselves in other words you know what they were doing also they were worshiping in fact suku and kaiwan were names for the planet Saturn they were worshiping the solar system that’s what they were doing and so in other words they’re not doing good spiritually at all at all they’re not doing good spiritually but they don’t think they’re doing bad let’s look at second thing what about how are they doing politically chapter 6 of Amos verse number one it says this woe to those who are at ease and Zion and to those who feel feel secure in the mountains of Samaria the distinguished men of the foremost of Nations to whom the house of Israel comes in other words politically they are strong Jobo actually reigned 42 years around 42 years in um in the North in Israel that’s a long time for someone to Reign especially if someone who’s Wicked it and that’s what he did in other words from the top down right to the people in the nation God is speaking to the Nations and he’s saying listen when the top goes bad everything goes bad especially if the people below are not holding to the truth of the word of God they’re going to go bad just like everybody else so they feel secure they’re politically strong let’s see how they’re doing economically look at chapter 3:12 and then verse number 15 in verse number 15 let me read verse 15 it says I will also Smite the winter house together with the summerhouse the houses of ivory will also perish and the great houses will come to an end declares the Lord and then look at chapter 6 in verse number four it says Those Who recline on beds of Ivory and sprawl on their couches and eat lambs from the flocks so in other words how are they doing how are they doing economically they’re wealthy they’re living in plush houses all right in other words another way to look at it is this this is unprecedented Prosperity life had become come to them a big party even in their worship they’re drinking wine they’re partying all the time Life’s a bunch of fun that’s what they thought but it says at the end of verse number six or verse six Amos 6 who drink wine from the sacrificial bowls while they anoint themselves with the finest oils yet they have not grieved over the Rune of Joseph or the Rune of Israel see so in their material uh in their they are very wealthy materially and financially they are rich and people in power are rich Ivory beds plenty of rich food inventing instruments so they play as it says in scripture to improvise eyes to the sounds of the harp as David did they’re inventing music so just think about doesn’t that sound like anybody does it sound like the United States what’s going on right here see it’s spiritually dangerous when a country in which you live is economically rich and spiritually poor which we are today politically we are still superpower although diminishing economically we are stronger than most countries the stock market is trading at all-time high gold and silver are holding their own they’re on the rise right socially we are more we have more genres of music and entertainment than we need we are drowning in a cesspool of our own multimedia forms of amusement and spiritually well let’s be honest nationally we are spiritually dead it is dangerous for the church because we tend to forget God in that situation we tend to live for ourselves we tend to neglect others and the needy and when this happens most likely we’ll still pray somewhat we’ll still sing we’ll still go to church but the danger is religious formalism and hypocrisy and it begins to show up in the heart look at Amos chapter 5 verse number 12 chapter 5 verse2 he says I know your transgressions are many and your sins are great you who distress the righteous and accept bribes and turn aside the the poor in the gate that doesn’t sound good does it see God hates when his people slip without much notice into spiritual a spiritually destructive condition that’s why the Lord says I hate your festivals I hate what you’re doing I do not Delight in your solemn assemblies and he uses the word transgression sometimes you come across that word you may say well what does that word mean see transgression is a ual word for sin because what it means is that it’s a sin of willful Rebellion towards something you already know secondly it’s a sin and a violation of a covenant standard that God set up in the word of God in other words that standard was if you obey you will be blessed if you do not obey you will be cursed right so it’s it’s this obedience Disobedience things and what they did is they broke the agreement with God and a person should never expect if they just wander away from what God says that somehow God’s going to look over that and find favor in that he will not he will not do that see the Lord God is speaking to all the nations that surround uh Israel and Judah and and he is holding them responsible for their treachery for their violence for their corruption for their slavery for their killing pregnant women all found in Amos now with that in mind that’s where the Prophet Amos comes on the scene and we see in chapter one verse number one that he is he lives in tcoa right his very name Amos means burden Bearer and the Bible does tell us there that he was a sheep herder from tocoa and then Amos even replied to amziah in chapter 7 verse 14 and 15 he says I’m not a prophet nor am I the son of a prophet in other words Amos is saying listen I’m not a professional Prophet I don’t even come from a family of prophets it’s not even my job or my trade I’m just a Layman he says that I’m a I’m just a herdsman and he was a herdsman from a country and he was a grower of Sycamore figs he says I’m a Nipper of sycamore fruit I’m a poor Prophet who eats common food now in the passage from Amos chapter 7 he says that he is a grower of Sycamore figs a more correct translation might be a Bruiser of sycamore fruit which becomes important for the message of Amos because Sycamore the sycamore fruit being like a fig though not quite as sweet in flavor and it was believed in the East that it would never ripen except it was a little bruised so some person was actually employed with an iron comb that scratched the skin of the Sycamore and unwounded and unwounded the fruit would even when ripe would be bitter to eat but when after it was wounded it would ripen rapidly and become sweet so this becomes important as God gives Amos A Vision that harmonizes with his occupation so he is a northern he is a northern uh a Souther a northern country boy from Judah a southern country country boy excuse me from Judah called to prophesied to the rich city in Israel now how does Israel respond to the prophet and his message well we if you look over to Amos chapter 7 you’ll find that in verse number 10 this is how they respond to him in Amos chapter 7 verse number 10 then amiah the priest of bethl sent word to jeroboam king of Israel saying Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the House of Israel the land is unable to endure all his words in verse 11 of chapter 7 for thus Amos says Jobo will die by The Sword and Israel will certainly go from It Go from its land into Exile then amziah said to Amos go you Seer SE another word for Prophet flee away to the land of Judah and there eat bread and there do your prophesying in verse 13 but no longer prophesy at bethl for it is the sanctuary of the king and the Royal residence so in other words they were saying to him the northern King was saying to this Southern boy they were saying to him listen go back from where you came from we don’t want to hear what you have to say because what you say is against what we want to do and what we are enjoying doing so you’re messing up the party here Amos and we we don’t we don’t want you to do that so Israel broke away from Judah the South and therefore they were no longer going down to the temple to worship God they’ve designed their own religious system now these are God’s people who should know better so the theme and purpose of Amos is the chastising of God’s people in chapter 1 verse number two it says he said the Lord Roars from Zion and from Jerusalem he utters his voice so the from the very temple of God in Jerusalem the Bible says that the Lord Roars his voice now when a lion roars and to those who are in earshot do they listen yes they do they listen right and uh I would listen well the Bible is saying that God is the he is the lion and he’s roaring from Jerusalem so to announce God’s impending judgment on Israel for their unrighteous deeds and vain worship and a call for them to repent of their sins so the theme of Amos starts with God because this is who they forgot they forgot who he is they forgot how he acts they forgot how seriously he takes wrong worship how seriously he takes sin how seriously he takes that so Amos begins to prophesy and remind them again who God is because they distorted who God is they are ignoring his word and they are forgetting God and what does he say well look at chapter 4: 13 He says first of all he created it all chapter 4:3 he says for behold he who forms mountains and creates the wind and declares to man what is his thoughts he who makes Dawn Into Darkness and Treads on the high places of the earth look what it says the Lord God of host is his name you forgot his name you forgot not who he is Yahweh who creates everything he’s saying here behold your God again and when you get your eyes off the Lord you need to get him back on him again or it’s going to be ending it’s going to end in disaster which it always does and then look what else he says in chapter 5: 8 and9 he creates the great Heavens he says he who made pleades and Orion and changes deep Darkness into morning who also darkens day into night who calls for the Waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the Earth then notice what it says the Lord is his name have you forgotten him you would not eat if it wasn’t for him he Waters the Earth he is the one that we ought to keep our eyes on and behold all the time in verse number nine it is he who flashes forth with destruction upon the strong so that destruction comes upon the fortresses now just think for a moment pleades in Orion is still visible to us today it’s it’s one of the best known star clusters out there if you know anything about viewing the sky and no remember they’re worshiping planets right and God is saying well hey I created those you should be worshiping me see they got it all mixed up and that’s what happens when we move away from God our our our thinking becomes completely distorted even if you’re a Believer if you wander away from God you’ll start doing things before you would have never even thought of because it is the Lord who keeps us in line it’s the word of God who keeps us on the straight and narrow all right that’s what it does so if you consider this well-known star cluster it’s one of the most beautiful objects in the sky and with a naked eye you can see six or seven stars enshrouded in blue gas and dust the problem is in New Jersey you may say two you may see two of those Stars I asked a uh scientist in our church many years ago uh if he would figure out the distance uh this St cluster is from the Earth and um if somewhere to travel there how long would it take and uh he did his calculations and he came up with with like 415 light years which is uh quite a distance now I don’t know if his calculations were correct however the point is the universe is very very very big and God God Almighty has created and sustains it he sustains all of it and I say all this to stress the important point that not only it’s not only for the the people of Israel but for all of God’s people at all times is that the important Point attached to the theme of a Amos is this you my people have lost sight of how great and awesome I am and you made me again into some little Idol that you can put in your pocket or you can travel around with in your suitcase and that’s what we often do we minimize God to a point where we are in control God’s not in control and you know what there’s there’s really no other place in the Bible that tells us more about the character of God than the prophets because the prophets are dealing directly with the people about who God is and what God says if you look at chapter 4:3 I read this already but it said I want you to notice it says for behold he who forms and then he he ends with this the Lord God of host is his name he’s saying to them listen behold your God and if or better when you get your eyes off the Lord you need to get them back on him quickly because when you get your eyes off the Lord you drift further and further into darkness into worldliness into the sinfulness of your own heart and into idolatry so what’s God’s plan for Amos to bring the condition of the people to their attention and who’s going to do this the one who Roars from jerus Jerusalem God is the lion he tells them what he sees and he says to them you forgot I’m not like your dumb Idols who do not see who do not hear who do not respond I am the god who sees and responds I am the god who knows everything going on that’s who I am John Calvin a reformer from Years Gone by remarked on our detrimental tendency as human beings to keep our eyes fixed on the terrestrial plane he said and he added if we just once lifted our gaze to heaven and contemplate what kind of being God is we would gained a very different perspective on ourselves and our world what does God think when his people drift away from him and he finds them going just going through the motions of worship and their hearts not engaged in real worship of God and they’re involved with all kinds of activities that they know God is not pleased with and they’re still doing it well here’s the plan here’s the plan of Amos chapter 3 and verse 7 and 8 this is what he reveals to both the northern kingdom and the southern Kingdom even though the northern kingdom is the one under judgment it says this in verse number seven surely the Lord God does nothing unless he Reveals His secret counsel to his servants the prophets in verse eight a lion has roared who will not fear the lord God has spoken who can but prophesy see you have done this and this and this and this and I’m going to discipline you for your sins in Amos chapter 3: number two he says you only have I chosen among the families of the earth therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities because you are are my children I will hold you responsible for breaking my Covenant remember the Covenant blessings and cursings that if you don’t obey the cursings that went on Egypt will be on you that’s what he’s saying there will be a lack of bread there’ll be a withholding of rain there’ll be blight and Milo there’ll be plagues you’ll die from The Sword all those things will take place because you broke my Covenant so in other words this is coming a a discipline that will come in the Assyrian destruction in Amos chter 5 verse 27 says therefore I will make you go into Exile Beyond Damascus says the Lord whose name is the god of host the god of the Lord’s army that’s who he is he’s saying listen behold your God again you’ve gotten your eyes off of me and you’re already slipping into the uh to a path of Destruction now saying all that God gives object lessons to to Amos for Israel and the OB object lessons are easy to understand and I want you to let’s look at them in chapter 7 of Amos the first object lesson is a locust plague and the Locust plague what he’s showing them he’s showing them something that could happen and that’s insects devouring the land look what it says in in verse number two of Amos chapter 7 thus the Lord God showed me and behold he was forming a locust swarm and when the spring crop began to sprout and behold the spring crop was after the king’s mowing at that point Amos intercedes for him and it says this in verse number two and it came about when he it had finished eating the vegetation of the land that I said Lord please please pardon how can Jacob stand for he is small so that’s he pleads for him he prays for Lord please please don’t do this on the nation please it’ll just destroy them and what does God do how how does God respond verse number three the Lord changed his mind about this I shall it shall not be says the Lord so in other words Amos is not from Israel he is from Judah they are actually his enemies and he is praying for them all right then here’s a second vision and it’s the vision of drought and fire in verse number four of chapter 7 of Amos notice what it says it says thus the Lord showed me and behold the Lord God was calling to contend with them by fire and it cons and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the Farmland all right so that would be devastating right fire destroys everything if you ever have any damage in your home by fire or something that would burn down that’s it you got to rebuild you got to destroy everything you have to really unless unless you there’s something left that you can save but most of the time with the smoke and the fire and the Flames it just destroys everything and God says I’m going to do that well what does Amos do he prays for them look what it says in verse number five of Amos 7 then I said Lord please stop how can Jacob stand for he is small Judah was only two Nations right well Israel was larger and then what does God do in verse number six God changed his mind about this this too shall not be said the Lord so God relented now when does God relent when does God change his mind he changes his mind in scripture for actually two reasons number one when someone prays in their in in the will of God and by repentance right when you repent from your sin and trust in Jesus he changes his mind toward you instead of judgment being poured on you and I he gives us his Mercy see that’s why you have to repent to come to Jesus because if you don’t repent then the Judgment of God is still will still be upon you all right but he’s not done yet there is a third vision and look at verse seven of Amos chapter 7 and this is the vision of the plum line now you know what a plum line is Right a plum line is is a is a straight it’s like a a string and on the bottom it’s a weight and then you would hold it up against the wall to see if that wall is straight now if you hold it up and the wall is crooked then you know something’s wrong right well that’s what’s going on here and notice what it says in verse number seven of Amos 7 thus he showed me and behold the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plum line in his hand you know what happens next Amos does not intercede there’s no prayer verse number eight says the Lord said to me what do you see Amos and I said a plum line then the Lord said behold I’m about to put a plum line in the midst of My People Israel does God relent this time no he does not what does he say in verse number seven or verse number eight he says I will spare them no longer this is in other words this is where the occupation of Amos comes in because it says in verse number uh 1 and two of Amos chapter 8 it says thus the Lord God showed me and behold there was a basket of summer fruit and he says what do you see Amos and I says a basket of summer fruit then the Lord said to me the end Has Come For My People Israel I will spare them no no more in other words when you nipped the syamore uh the sycamore fruit right it became sweet but if you waited too long it became rotten and what is he God saying to my to the people he says God’s people are rotten to the core the Fig was nipped but became rotten that’s the point so what will God do what will God do well look what it says in verse number 11 of chapter 8 behold days are coming declares the Lord God when I will send a famine on the land not a famine of bread or a thirst for water but for hearing the words of the Lord people will stagger from sea to Sea from from the north even to the east they will go to and fro to seek the word of the Lord but they will not find it that is the worst Famine of all if the word of God was not available to the people they wanted to hear it but they could not find it do you know what happened two years later after his message an earthquake came and do you know what happened 25 years later this is what happened right here that God held judgment upon the people and the nation the northern c nation of Israel fell and they fell under the mighty power of the Assyrians who God raised up to discipline them so in other words you see the character of God in these uh passages that are so incredible now if I were to end right there I would say wow this is this tough but this is the amazing thing about God this is the amazing thing about God Dave had mentioned this in Sunday school too that in the midst of judgment God is still merciful he is still merciful he’s still reaching out saying come and repent he gave them 25 years to repent he didn’t do it right away he sent an earthquake just to remind them about the message of Amos and they still didn’t repent so see God in other words there’s a time where God’s mercy ends and judgment begins but I want you to notice some people have called this second Amos now I I don’t mean to be fun funny but but when you read the last chapter of Amos it’s not M talking about judgment it’s talking about restoration see here’s the greatness of God three big things contained in the framework of all the prophets and what are those three big things that you can never forget is number one the Lord will raise up the davidic line again secondly the Lord will have a theocracy well God will be the king and SEC and thirdly that he will they will be saved saved and blessed in their own land talking about Israel now I want you to look at the last section of Amos chapter 9 verse 11-15 and I want you to notice the goodness of God towards people that have rebelled against him that he disciplined because he was a father to them and now this is what he promises them in the midst of this uh hard message look what he says in verse number 11 in that day I will raise up the Fallen Booth of David and wall up its breaches and I will also raise up its ruins and rebuild it in the days of old verse 12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name declares the Lord who does this verse 13 behold days are coming declares the Lord when the plowman will overtake the Reaper and The Treader of grapes him who SWS seed and when the mountains will drip sweet wine in all the hills will be dissolved in verse 14 also I will restore the Captivity of My People Israel their wine and make Gardens and eat their fruit verse 15 I will also plant them on their land and they will not again be rooted out from their land which I have given them says the Lord God now of course eventually this is talking about the millennial Reign the tribulation the in the Millennium where where the Lord will restore his people and the plan goes from the church to Israel right the church being taken out we’re in heaven right we’re in front of the beam to see Judgment of God then the marriage supper of the land then we come down with the Lord and resurrected bodies to reign with him on the earth for Thousand Years and in that time God will call his people back they’ll see him whom they have pierced and they’ll get saved they’ll get saved in their land and that’s where Jesus will reign in the temple for a thousand years and will reign with him a thousand years see that’s God’s plan so in the midst of judgment There’s Hope for the future and we’re all part of that because we are part of God’s plan so God’s promises to reinstate the ddic line to renew the land and restore the people will come to pass it will come to pass and that’s the great message of the prophets all the prophets end here Malachi ended there too and so do the other prophets there’s always this hope for the future he’s not done with us in other words so what are some of the things that we could take away from flushing it out in our own life I think one of them would be God cares about people and those who have needs and so should you and I that whenever you have an opportunity to show compassion you should act upon it as God does and it is wrong to enrich yourself at the expense of others and in your heart if your heart is far from God and you are living in Disobedience then your words and actions mean nothing to God and you’re still under judgment and then also compl complacency happens almost without notice check and renew your heart daily judgment is certain to those who ignore God see the patience and the kindness and the mercy of God have a ending point which judgment or discipline will take hold so in the end keep your eyes on the Lord and your heart warmed to the awesomeness and the greatness of who God is and how much he loves his people and desires them to walk in Holiness and worship him in spirit and truth but if you decide to do your own thing and go your own way and sin he will hold judgment on you as a father does a son that’s the message of Amos Amen in one message let’s pray before I pray I just want to end with this one preacher once said to a group one day I Came Upon a drunken man asleep on the railroad tracks and the the express is due what would you have done he said and each answered quickly I would have dragged him off the track in a hurry well said the preacher this is the state of every unsafe person in the world asleep on the tracks and God’s judgment Express is almost due and then when you find the man you find that he’s not just asleep on the track he’s dead on the tracks so you have to give him the gospel so he comes alive right let’s pray Lord thank you this morning for your word Lord don’t don’t allow us Lord to slip into a condition like these people and Lord in our country it’s easy to do so we’re wealthy Lord we have more possessions than we could even need or want and Lord there’s pleasure abounding in our country and yet Lord those are the very things that can move us away from you I pray Lord they would not that you would stop stop us Lord in our tracks help us Lord to lift our eyes to you and both Behold our God and who he is and what he’s done and what he’s going to do and how we’re fit fitted into to that plan and I pray Lord Jesus we would Worship You from our heart and it would show in our our manner of life it would show in our um understanding of the word of God it would show in our practice it would show in our singing it would show everywhere Lord because we have our eyes upon you thank you Lord for your mercy thank you Lord for your kindness and I pray Lord Jesus we your people would submit unto you and that Lord we would receive the blessings that come from worshiping our true and living God and Lord we do look forward to the future we do look forward to your plan that’s yet to be unveiled and and take place and so Lord allow us to keep our eyes upon that hope no matter how dark our days may get no matter how much trouble we may find ourselves in I pray that our eyes would be upon your plan because your plan is not going to change because a nation is going in its wrong direction so I pray you would bless us Lord in that way and Lord give us people make us people that are rejoicing in all the great things that you have done and I pray you give us the opportunity to hedge against sin and Lord even for those who don’t know you today would be the day of salvation they would come and call call upon you as Lord and savior because judgment is coming and you mean what you say and I pray this in Christ’s name amen

A Country Boy with a Message from God Almighty

In this sermon, Pastor Babij goes to the Book of Amos and details how both kingdoms of Israel drifted from true worship of God into mere formality and idolatry. Pastor Babij explains how the prophet Amos focused on the voice and Word of God, even interceding once for Israel. Pastor Babij then teaches from Amos that God would not relent of His final judgement against the two kingdoms but would send a famine of His Word. Pastor Babij concludes with message of hope and exhortation for believers to keep their eyes and hearts on God.

okay this morning I really want you to take your Bibles and turn to an Old Testament minor prophet Amos using this particular book and this message today as a kind of a New Year’s message for us and I’ll be back in first Peter next week but Amos you have to try to find it if you haven’t been in the Old Testament for a while and it’s asked of course it’s after Psalms proverbs and then into the prophets so just turn to Amos in your Bibles and as you’re turning there let’s pray father I thank you again for your kindness this morning to us allowing us even to live another day and Lord the privilege to be under the hearing of the word of God I pray we’d never take that for granted and I prayed we would always be faithful to be ready to hear it but not just be ready hearers but lord allow us to be ready doers so we put it into practice so we’re not just getting a big head of knowledge Lord but we’re learning to have a relationship an intimate relationship with you and I pray Lord as we do go along in our Christian life and we grow I ask Lord that you would allow us to always be sensitive to the Spirit of God as the Spirit of God brings to our attention things in the Word of God and convicts us of sin I pray Lord that we learn to take care of that sin put it to death put on righteousness and go on to walk a life of holiness Lord this morning as we look at the Prophet and his message to the people I pray we would take heed and that we would not let what happened here happened to us so lord please teach us these things make us aware of them from the Word of God and I pray this this morning in Christ’s name Amen so Amos I’m gonna do something today I’m going to preach the whole Book of Amos this morning actually I was given an assignment by grace advanced to teach the Minor Prophets and so I’m trying this out on you this morning and because I haven’t been in the Old Testament in a long time and I’ve been in the New Testament so I do want to look back at this particular book now the most important endeavor you will ever embark upon is the pursuit of knowing God aw Tozer once wrote that a right conception of God is basic not only for or to systematic theology but to practical Christian living he further commented on the observation that error in doctrine rises from imperfect and ignoble thoughts about God it was also John Calvin he remarked on our detrimental tendency as as human beings to keep our gaze fixed on the earthly plane and not on the heavenly plane he added if we just once lifted our gaze to heaven and contemplated what kind of being God is we gain a very different perspective on ourselves and of course on life itself so what does God think when his people drift away from him and he finds them just going through the motions of worship and their heart is not engaged with him they are no longer in other words listening to God’s spokesmen and actually they prevent God’s spokesman from speaking what does God do when those kind of things happen well we kind of get a message from the Prophet Amos that is very pertinent to our day but to get there I want to give you some historical background to give you the situation in which the people live because Amos was probably a very early prophet he was a prophet that would be early in the life of Israel about 755 BC he prophesied so he’s one of the early prophets and there’s a background and why he is bringing the message of God to the people so he we have to find out who the author is who is who was he writing to and when was it written because he was so early if you look in verse number 1 of chapter 1 of Amos it says the words of Amos who was among the sheep herders from Tekoa which he envisioned in visions concerning Israel which is the north northern kingdom him being from the southern kingdom Judah it says in the days of Uzziah king of judah south which would be the south judah in the days of Jeroboam son of joash king of israel two years before the earthquake so you find right there in this particular book that it’s giving us this thing we need to know about what’s going on and who’s who’s the one speaking and white wise why is he writing who is he writing to and also the historical context of his writing now if you probably the terrible earthquake terrible earthquake was from the time of Uzziah two years it says in the passage before the earthquake where it says here you will flee by the valley of my mountains two for the valley of the mountains will reach two as ell yes you will flee just as you fled before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah the king of Judah so the very mention of course is Zechariah 14 5 the very mention of this earthquake points to the internal connection between this event and the prophet’s own prophetic mission so in other words scripture teaches that the earthquakes when the Lord comes in judgment upon the nation’s for we’re gonna find out in Amos chapter 8 verse 8 it says because of this will not the land quake and everyone who dwells in it mourn indeed all of it will rise up like the Nile and it will be tossed about and subside like the Nile of Egypt so in other words when God is speaking especially when he is speaking in judgment the earth shakes the earthquake which shook Jerusalem two years after the appearance of Amos was the judgment threatened by God against the two kingdoms of Israel the north and the south so what was the historical situation in this particular book well the historical situation actually examines the condition of the people during that particular day now what was the spiritual situation well if you look in anus Amos chapter 2 look at verse number 8 it says on garments taken as pledges they stretch out beside every altar and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined so another passage here in chapter 5 verse 21 through 23 it says this I hate verse 21 of chapter 5 I hate I reject your festivals nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies even those you you offer up to me burnt offerings and your grain offerings I will not accept them I will not even look at the peace offerings of your fatlings verse 23 take away from me the noise of your songs I will not even listen to the sound of your harps now so from this particular these passages right here we would have to ask the question are they going to the temple in other words are they going to church of course they’re not going to church they’re going to the temp they’re meeting with the people of God are they meeting the question if we answer the question the question is yes they’re there meaning they’re offering their festivals and their solemn assemblies they are offering sacrifices and offerings and they are singing now are they offering these things to the true God Jehovah well in verse number 22 of chapter 5 it says you’re there offering it to me so now we’re getting at what the Prophet is going to speak to the people were worshiping the true God in the wrong way see their hearts were far from God they were worshipping with empty formality so that means that the spiritual things in Israel were terrible and why were they terrible because Jeroboam did that which was evil in the sight of God and the passage of Scripture from first Kings which is on the screen here it says then Jeroboam built check’em in the hill country of ephraim and lived there and he went out from there and built Pannu Jeroboam said in his heart now the kingdom will return to the house of David if this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem then the heart of this people return to the Lord even – even – rio bom king of judah and they will kill me and return to rio bomb king of judah and then the second part of that passage of scripture it says so the king consulted and made two calves and said to them it is too much for you to go up to jerusalem behold your God’s o Israel that brought you up from the land of Egypt he set one in Bethel and the other he put in Dan now this thing became a sin for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan and he made houses on high places and made priests from among all the peoples who were not of the sons of Levi so in other words the king of the north says listen you don’t have to go down the south to worship because if you go there you’ll you’ll turn back to the Lord so I’m gonna give you your gods of course remember those gods were pointed back to Egypt when they made a golden calf he gives them now two golden calves and he says listen you don’t have to go to Jerusalem Oh – down to Judah to worship you can worship right here because I’m gonna make all these I places and you’re going to go and worship and that’s what they did so spiritually they were in rebellion against God because they worshiped him in the wrong way with an empty heart so what was the situation politically Amos chapter 6 politically in verse number one it says this woe to those who are at ease in Zion and to those who feel secure in the mountains of Samaria the distinguished men of the foremost of nations to whom the house of Israel comes all right so from that passage of Scripture what would you say the people were week or were they strong were they politically strong or and secure or were they weak well we can see from the passage that they were living at ease and it says right there they felt secure Jeroboam and Jeroboam reigned for 41 or 42 years even though Judah and Syria and Assyria and Damascus were where the main is enemies of Israel yet they are at ease and feel secure because they are politically strong so spiritually they’re in rebellion politically they feel strong and secure in the land how about economically how are they doing economically well look at chapter 3 in verse number 15 it says I will also smite the winter house together with the summer house the houses of ivory will also perish and the great houses will come to an end declares the Lord now of course in the first three chapters the Lord is declaring his judgment upon them and then of course in verse number six I mean chapter six and verse number four through six look what it says here those who recline on beds of ivory and sprawl on their couches and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall who in improvise to the sound of the harp and like David have composed songs for themselves who drink wine from sacrificial bowls while they anoint themselves with the finest of oils yet they have not grieved or the ruin of Joseph would you say that from that passage of Scripture they are rich or poor they’re rich so they’re politically they’re spiritually in rebellion politically they feel secure in the land and they’re wealthy people in power are rich ivory beds plenty of rich food inventing instruments for song it’s amazing when a culture is doing well there’s a lot of music there’s a lot of that kind of thing now you I could ask this question to who does that sound like does it sound like us politically we are still super power although diminishing economically we are stronger than most countries the stock market is trading at an all-time high gold and silver are holding their own cryptocurrency is becoming more desirable to invest in socially we have more genres of music and intake entertainment than we need we are drowning in the cessful of multimedia forms of amusement and spiritually well we have to be honest nationally we’re spiritually dead as a nation the only thing that’s keeping this place afloat is the true Church that’s the only thing the Lord is keeping final judgment from coming because at times not ready yet so it is spiritually dangerous when the country in which you live is economically rich and spiritually poor it is dangerous for the church because we tend to forget God we tend to we really tend to ourselves and we neglect the things that we ought to be doing and in in Amos here one of the things they were neglecting were the needy when this happens we most likely will still sing will still pray will still go to church but the the danger of religious formalism always lurks there when a country is in that particular place he got hates when his people slip without much notice into this spiritually destructive condition we have to watch out it’s not just a min as a misen his day it’s our day – it’s every day that the church dwells that we have to watch out we don’t slip into this now if you notice in Chapter 1 of Amos there are certain things that he says over and over again he says in chapter 1 verse number 3 thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Damascus and for four I will not revoke it’s punishment because they thrashed gilad with implements of sharp iron and that that goes on in chapter six that goes on in chapter one verse 6 chapter one verse number nine and if you look at verse number nine it says this in chapter one thus says the Lord for three transgression Grint transgressions of tyre and for four I will not revoke its punishment because they delivered up an entire population to eat them and did not remember the Covenant of Brotherhood and then also in chapter 2 in verse number one again it says thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Moab and for four I will not revoke its punishment because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to Lyme and then in verse number four of chapter two thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Judah and for four I will not revoke its punishment because they rejected the law of the Lord and they have not kept his statues they their lives also have led them astray and those after which their fathers walked and then in verse 6 of chapter 2 it says thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not revoke its punishment because they sell the righteous for money and the needy for a pair of sandals and then notice over in chapter 2 in verse number nine it says yet yet it was I so now the Lord’s bringing himself in in verse number 10 of chapter two it was I who brought you out of Egypt and it says I led you in the wilderness and verse 11 then I raised up some of your sons to be prophets and some of your young men to be Naza rights is this not so o sons of Israel declares the Lord verse number 12 of chapter 2 but you made theirs Nazarites drink wine and you commanded the prophets saying you shall not prophesy verse 13 behold I am weighed down beneath you as a wagon is weighed down when filled with cheese so what’s the Lord know the Lord’s telling me I’m I’m burdened by the way you’re living I’m burdened by your sin I’ve had enough of it that so the Lord showing us right there how he actually feels when the people his people come to this particular place now before I go any further I want to introduce you to the man himself to the Prophet because I think this is important to understand who the man is Amos who is he well chapter 1 verse number 1 he lives in Toccoa Judah the words of Amos says who was among the sheep herders from Tekoa which he envisioned in visions concerning Israel in Chapter 7 in verse 14 and 15 we find out that he’s a sheep herder in other words he’s a farmer type in chapter 7 and verse 14 it says then Amos replied to a Messiah I am NOT a prophet nor am I the son of a prophet so in other words he was not a professional prophet he was not even the son of a prophet it wasn’t even his job to be a prophet he was just a layman he was a herdsmen in other words he was a free boy it says there in verse 15 he was a grower of Sycamore figs a better way to translate that would be he was a nipper of Sycamore fruit that could mean that he was connected with a poor class of people he was poor and it says in verse 15 but the Lord took me from following the flock and the Lord said to me go prophesy for the people of Israel so in other words this southern boy from Judah is told by God to go prophesied to the northern tribes of Israel in fact a grower of Sycamore figs also can be translated a bruiser of sycamore fruit what that means that the sycamore fruit being like a fig though not quite as sweet in flavor it was believed in the East that it would never ripen except with a little bruise so some people were actually employed and hired with an iron comb to scratch or to wing the skin of the sycamore fruit unwanted skin would mean that it would never ripen and even when ripe it was it would be bitter to be too bitter to be eaten and after it had been wounded or scratched it ripened rapidly and became sweet so this particular thing that he actually was involved with as employment as his life we see later in this book that God gives Amos a vision that harmonizes with that occupation and we’ll look at that the last part so he was a nurse a northern boy it tells us in Chapter 7 that Amos was it says Amos was conspired against because it says Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel in other words he was speaking against the king and it said the land was unsuitable to endure his words then a Masai Amaziah said to Amos in Scripture go away from us he calls him a seer a seer is another word for prophet he says flee to your land of Judah and there go eat bread and there go prophesying in other words he’s saying just you don’t belong around here you don’t belong here go back to where you came from we don’t want to hear what you have to say so that was the response of Israel to God’s prophet because God’s prophet has something to say to Israel we didn’t get to that quite yet but it does bring us to the theme of Amos and what is the theme of Amos we see from the the few passages are already read that the theme of Amos is God’s going to chase in his people he’s going to spanked them in other words for them worshiping him in the wrong way with no hearts that’s what he’s going to do and so in Amos chapter 1 in verse number 2 notice how he describes the Lord it says he said the Lord roars from Zion and from Jerusalem he utters his voice and the Shepherd’s pasture grounds mourn and the summit of Carmel dries up in other words how does he pictured the Lord he pictures the Lord as a roaring lion and when a lion roars do people pay attention you better believe they do all right if you’re close earshot to a line and you hear roaring you better make a plan right because something’s going to happen right you don’t want to be lunch so it’s describing the Lord as the lion and what is the line doing the lying is roaring and so that means the Lord is ready to actually pounce on his people so the theme of Amos actually starts with God the first thing that happens when people are at ease when people are more paying our paying attention border to themselves into their spiritual life and their walk with their Lord the first thing that happens is they start to forget who God is and they move away from that they forget that God is the one who is the creator look at chapter 4 of Amos in verse number 13 Amos begins to remind them again who God is it says for behold he is saying to them look you have not been looking he says behold he who forms mountains and creates the wind and declares to man what are his thoughts he who makes dawn into darkness and spreads on the high places of the earth or treads on the high places of the earth the Lord God of hosts is his name he knows how he’s stressing that in the scripture he is saying to them listen behold your God that when you get your eyes off the Lord you need to get them back on the Lord because the more you don’t look at the Lord and who he is the more you drift away from him and you become unlike him and you just backed into worldliness and ungodliness and and all the darkness that the world has to offer so when you get your eyes off the Lord you need to get back on the Lord and then notice in chapter 5 of Amos and verse 8 and 9 again he is telling them listen it’s the Lord who created the great heavens and verse 8 of chapter 5 it says he who made the Pleiades in Orion and changes deep darkness into mourning who also dark day in tonight who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth the Lord is his name verse number nine it is he it is he who flashes forth with destruction upon the strong so that the just that destruction comes upon the fortress so in the passage he is actually stressing there that it is the Lord who created not only the heaven the earth but the the the universe he’s the one who created all the stars he mentions Pleiades and Orion by name it’s probably one of the best star clusters out there in the sky it’s one of the most beautiful objects in the sky if you ever did any stargazing with the telescope and even with the naked eye you can see it’s got it’s got about six or seven stars shrouded in blue gas and dusts and the clusters shape reminds star gator’s gaze there’s really of a miniature Dipper the clusters shape as a little dipper can be seen now of course if you’re in New Jersey you maybe see two or three of the stars not the whole thing you have to go into the dark parts of the state or another state and to see them but he is just saying to the people you forgot that the God that you covenant with is a great God he is an awesome God he’s the God who’s not uncreated these things but he’s created these incredible objects that guide your night and your the passage of time and so you forgot who he is I had a scientist in my church in the church figure out the distance this star cluster is from the earth and if you were to travel there how long would it take us of course that would be a question only a scientist like an astrophysicist can answer of course if he’s a believer and unbeliever you’d get a different answer or becomes confusing so is if his calculations were correct he said one light-year is the distance of light that light travels in the vacuum in one year and light travels at 186,000 282 miles per second and then he says an astronomical unit is a measure of the Earth’s average distance from the Suns the Sun approximately 93 million miles and so he did the math and said to me traveling at 30,000 light years the distance from the centre of our solar system to the center of our galaxy flying at 3000 miles an hour would take six point seven billion years of course then you said Pleiades and Araya is 450 light years from the earth now I I don’t know if those calculations are correct I could never check them however the point is the universe is very very very big and God that means God is very very creative and he’s very powerful to be able to create such a universe and then sustain the universe see when you drift away from God you don’t think of those things anymore and I say all that to stress the importance not only for the people of Israel but for all God’s people of all times so what is the important point attached to the theme of Amos it’s this you my people have lost sight of how great and powerful and awesome and personal I am you’ve lost sight of that you’ve drifted away from that and that’s why he says in the passage for behold it’s I who forms the mountains and creates the wind I’m the one who made Pleiades in Orion I’m the one who made all this great universe behold your God again your eyes back on me and if or better when you get your eyes off the Lord you need to get them back on him as soon as possible because when you get your eyes off the Lord you drift further and further into the darkness of worldliness and the sinfulness of your own heart so what’s God’s plan in Amos to bring the condition of the people before their attention well God of course is the lion he tells them what he sees he says to them you forgot that I am NOT like the dumb idols that the King set up for you that you go worship and worship in the wrong worship me in the wrong way I’m a God who sees I’m a God who responds I’m a God who knows the intentions of your heart I’m a God who does not overlook evil yes I’m long-suffering with it but I do not overlook it there’s a point in time where God’s judgment is full and he must act because of his holiness and his righteousness he must act so what does he do here’s the plan the plan is that God’s going to give Amos three visions one vision is a locust plague another vision is a drought in a fire and a third vision is a plumb line now before I look at that I want you to go back to chapter 3 in verse number seven and eight chapter three verse number seven and eight because God reveals his plan for Israel and Judah – Amos it says in chapter three of Amos verse seven surely the Lord God does nothing unless he reveals his secret counsel to his servants the prophets verse aid a lion has roared that’s God who will not fear the Lord God has spoken who can but prophesy and then move up to verse number two of Amos chapter three it says you only have I chosen among the families of the earth therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities see the Lord’s being pretty clear there and notice he says he fears the endearment you are my people I’ve chosen only you I didn’t chose choose all the other nations I chose you I put my love upon you so you see the heart of the Lord coming out of that passage and then move over to chapter five of Amos in verse 10 through 13 it says this in verse 10 of chapter 5 they hate him who reproves in the gate they abhor him who speaks with integrity therefore because you impose heavy rent on the poor and exact the tribute of grain from them though you have built houses of well hewn stone yet you will not live in them you have planted pleasant vineyards yet you will not drink their wine verse 12 for I know your transgressions are many and your sins are great in verse number 12 of chapter 5 and then he says this you who distress the righteous and accept bribes and turn aside the poor in the gate north therefore at such a time the prudent person keeps silent for it is an evil time and then down to verse 27 of chapter 5 it says therefore I will make you go into exile beyond Damascus says the Lord whose name is the God of hosts in other words he’s going to send discipline them with the nation of course the Assyrian destruction nation of Assyria is going to come against them we’re going to see that later on in in the prophets but at that point when God tells them listen your sin is has been filled up to the top it’s time for me to act but he doesn’t in a very unusual way he gives a mestizos visions and these visions really do point out something in particular but then I want you to notice what Amos does and then how God responds to Amos the Prophet look now look turned in a chapter 7 and verse number 1 and this is the vision the first vision of the locust plague now we know locusts are very destructive if they have very good agriculture because they’re a wealthy nation they’re eating well so that means they have good crops and stuff so the Lord kind of says I’m going to send to you a locust plague and he is showing them something that could happen insects devouring their land look at verse number 2 of Amos chapter 7 it says thus the Lord showed me and behold he was forming a locust swarm when the spring crop began to sprout and behold the spring crop was after the Kings mowing all right now so that’s the setup verse number 1 verse number 2 that was verse number 1 verse number 2 what is Amos do he prays he asked the Lord Lord please don’t do that and so Lewis says in verse number 2 of Amos chapter 7 and it came about when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land that I said Lord God please pardon how can Jacob stand for he is small alright so what does he do he intercedes right and how does God respond to that intercession of the Prophet verse number 3 and the Lord changed his mind about this I shall not said the Lord so Amos remember is not from Israel he is from Judea actually Israel is the enemies of Judah and God changes his mind because the prof saw him in prayer alright so that’s the first vision the second vision is the name is chapter seven verse number four and this is the vision of the drought in the fire it says thus the Lord God showed me and behold the Lord God was calling to contend with them by fire and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the farmland again in verse number five what does Amos do he intercedes in verse number 5 of chapter 7 he says he said Lord God please stop how can jacob stan for he’s small and how is God responds to him verse number six of Amos 7 the Lord changed his mind about this this too shall not be said the Lord God but then there’s a third vision and this is the vision of the plumb line and you know what a plumb line is right plumb line is something you drop to met to see if a wall is straight the line is straight and if you put it next to the wall and the wall will tell you it’s straight or it will tell you it’s crooked right so the Lord is now saying – Amos listen look at verse number seven of chapter seven it says this thus he showed me and behold the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in his hand verse number eight Amos does not intercede this time there’s no prayer offered Amos can’t pray and the reason why is because Israel was clearly sinfully crooked look what it says in verse number eight it says the Lord said to me what do you see Amos and I said a plumb line then the Lord said behold I am about to put a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel that’s what the Lord says to them and then in verse number seven verse number eight he continues on he says I will spare them no longer so what is he getting at well in Chapter eight in verse number one and two he’s getting at what I mentioned before that Amos was a nipper or a scratcher of the Sycamore to make them ripe well it was almost a picture of God holding chastisement on the people so they would recognize their sin so they could see their deeds and the judgment of God that would come upon them and of if we’re looking at chastisement that God would lead them to repent and come back to him so look what it says in Chapter eight in verse number one and two it says this thus the Lord God showed me behold there was a basket of summer fruit and he says what do you see Amos and I said a basket of summer fruit then the Lord said to me the end has come for my people Israel I will spare them no longer so you can see that judgment is filled up Amos can’t even pray for the nation now the only thing the only thing that could take place is God’s judgment and chastisement upon his people because of their incorrect workshop because of the the rebellion of their heart because they have seeped and and moved far from him and have forgotten their God and so he has to get their attention he has no other choice than to get their attention so what does he actually do once he measures Israel and he finds out this basket of summer fruit what does that picture of it’s a picture of saying that my people are rotten to the core you know summer fruit summer fruit is the last you leave bananas laying around in your basket for too long whether they start getting brown and mushy right nobody wants to eat that you have to make banana cake after or whatever you do with that or you or you mash it up or do something with it but it’s no longer a desirable fruit like a nice firm see the people of God have gotten rotten to the core what will God do to distant planets people after he measures them and finds them crooked this is probably the most devastating thing that could ever happen to any people and God says okay if this is what you want this is what I’m giving you and what does he do notice in verse 11 and 12 of chapter 8 the Lord sends them a famine the famine of course is inevitable it’s a famine of the worst kind and it says this it says behold in verse number 11 of chapter 8 behold days are coming declares the Lord God when I will send a famine on the land not a famine for bread or a thirst for water but rather for hearing the words of the Lord verse 12 people will stagger from sea to sea from the north even to the east they will go to and fro to seek the the word of the Lord but they will not find it isn’t that devastating so that’s the Lord that’s what the Lord does he gives us people a famine of the word of God can’t find it anywhere why when I sent my preachers to you my prophets to you what did you do you shut them up you sent them out and of course ultimately they killed them and he says if that’s what you want that’s what you’re gonna get I’m gonna there’s gonna be a famine it’s gonna be a spiritual famine that family is gonna be a famine of the word of God but so when the people of God are not faithful if the people of God or the people who claim to know God don’t want the Word of God the Lord says okay I won’t give it to you I won’t send it to you anymore not realizing that that’s our life stream that’s how we know who God is that’s how we know how to be right with him that’s how we know about the message of Jesus Christ that’s how we know what we’re supposed to be while we live here in aliens in this foreign land that’s what the Word of God tells us where we’re going and how we can be right with God all those things found in the Word of God if the Word of God is not there if it’s not being proclaim how would people know how can people be saved how can people be rescued they can’t be so the most devastating things that could ever happen to a group of people is when God no longer speaks no longer speaks do you know the last word of the prophets is Malachi God did not speak through a prophet for 400 years until John the Baptist and the spiritual condition of Israel when John the Baptist stepped on the scene was horrific they were they were just in the same position that these people were they’ve moved so far away from the Word of God they put so many things around the Word of God people never got to the Word of God and so what they believed was wrong what they understood about God’s plan was wrong and so the Lord had to correct that and John the Baptist was the man that came on and laid bare laid straight the road so the message of the gospel can come again to the people and so this particular destruction and judgment of God on the people of God was the worst that could happen what is so amazing about the prophets though you would think all right wow this happened to the people and you would think that’s it it’s over and this is the amazing part about the prophets because what does God do does he leave just the message of judgment for the people they’re going to be taken into a Syrian exile right they’re gonna there’s going to be a Babylonian captivity after that right and then other things are going to happen to the people of God so what does God do once tells them he’s going to send a famine in the land and he’s going to prevent the Word of God from going you won’t be able to find out what is he do he gives them the last chapter of Amos is a message of hope it’s not a message of judgment that’s what’s so amazing about the prophets in other words I’m gonna give you something you don’t deserve again I’m gonna give you hope that there’s gonna be a rescue over here now to show you that let’s look at chapter 9 verse 11 through 15 and then I’m gonna close Amos 9 11 through 15 and this is a basic pattern of all the prophets that God who sends judgment yet he gives a message of hope notice what it says in Amos chapter 9 verse 11 through 15 he says in that day I will raise up the falling booth of David and wall up its breaches I will also raise up the ruins and rebuilt it in the days of old verse 12 of chapter 9 that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name declares the Lord who does this behold days are coming declares the Lord when the plow and plow men will overtake the Reaper and the Treader of grapes will who sews grapes him who sow seeds when the mountains will drip sweet wine and all the hills will be dissolved also I will restore the captivity of my people Israel and they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them they will also plant vineyards and drink their wine and make gardens and eat their fruit and I will also plant them on their land and they will not again be uprooted out of their land which I gave them says the Lord your God isn’t that a message of hope a message of judgment and at the end God gives a mess that you are god is he wants to encourage his people – he wants to bring them back to himself and what does God do he sends a promise he says I’m this is my promise I’m gonna reinstate the Davidic line I’m gonna I’m going to renew the land and I’m gonna restore my people that’s what I’m gonna do and that’s what he is going to do God’s plan for Israel is still in place today someday Israel will come alive and be regenerated in their land in Israel someday that’s going to take place but right now the preaching of the gospel goes out so all the Gentiles can be saved right and there there are Jews getting saved individually but nationally as a as a nation a country they are not being saved they are kind of they’re partially blinded and they’re very stubborn when it comes to the truth of the gospel but one day that will change it will change God promises that so just in thinking through a bit of the message of the Prophet you see how applicable this ancient message is for us today this can easily happen to any one of us that we can slip away from God and if you ever experienced a cold time in your Christian walk it’s not pleasant it’s not it’s not one that you want to stay in you want to you want to be on fire for the Lord Rennell the Lord wants us to be on fire for him he doesn’t want to lukewarmness he wants us from our heart to worship Him to praise Him genuinely to love his word to love his truth to to flesh out the things that we’re learning in our life so we can use our gifts and we can walk in holiness so we can bring glory to his name and we can bring the gospel to those who haven’t heard it yet see that’s what we ought to be doing so if we flesh out a little bit of the things that are happening from Amos we would have to say a couple things number one you don’t have to be professionally trained to speak for God Amos wasn’t also if your heart is far from God and you are living in disobedience then your words and your actions really don’t mean anything holiness and obedience go together and they give incredible power to your life and your words also complacency happens almost without notice we have to check and renew our heart daily and when we come to the Lord’s table part of the Lord’s table is to make sure we examine ourselves spiritually relationally with God and with others so we can come and partake of that peace meal in a way that we are truly worshiping God and God is meeting with us as the God who makes peace with us through the blood of the Cross and then also judgment is certain to those who ignore God judgment will come to those who reject and ignore God and then finally when you lose sight of how great and awesome God is how personally is to us.if or better when you get your eyes off the Lord you need to get them back on him ASAP see that’s the message for the new year there’s many things that can distract us from our spiritual walk with the Lord Jesus Christ don’t let those things distract you keep your eyes on the Lord and your heart warmed to the awesomeness and the greatness of who God is and how much he loves his people and how much he gives his people and then desire each day to walk in holiness so you can worship Him in spirit and in truth and that’s what pleases God that’s what gives him glory and that’s what makes us a body of people that can be effective in our day to make sure the Word of God is still being heard and is still going out to those who haven’t heard it yet and they don’t think they need it but they do need it they need the gospel of Christ and who does that the church does that right so let’s take this message the heart and put it into practice in our life and be honest with ourselves about where we’re really at spiritually and if you have never come to know Christ as your Lord and Savior never repented of your sin and asked them to save you then today has to be the day this is a new year let’s start off the new year and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ follow him be baptized and be part of God’s church and learn more what God wants for you and has for you in the Word of God and believe me I know that you will find the blessings of God in tremendous ways as you learn God’s Word and the Word of God transforms your mind to give you a worldview that is truly Christian that’s pray Lord thank you again Lord your word is awesome and we didn’t even touch the whole message of this prophet and yet Lord how practical and more up-to-date your word is then even tomorrow’s newspaper because it tells us who we really are it tells us what our really real problems are it tells us what we really need so I just ask you Lord that you would impress upon our heart these truths and I pray as you do so Lord you would allow us to have the plumb line of the Word of God measure how we’re doing and if you find anything in our life that is crooked and that should not be there make it plain to us that we may repent of it put it to death as sin before you so we can get up put on the garments of righteousness and the clean garments of truth and then walk with you Lord in the integrity of our heart I pray you would do that amongst your people today in Christ’s name Amen

that’s right they were taken captive not simply conquered and oppressed by another Nation but actually removed from the land they were taken into Exile and that’s what God promised back in the Torah he said if you keep on being disobedient that eventually I will remove you from the land who carried away the people of Israel what Empire the Assyrian Empire in 722 or 721 BC who carried away the people of Judah Babylonians or starting in 605 BC to 587 when they’re the third invasion but God was long suffering with these two kingdoms and he constantly sent prophets to turn them back and we’re going to look at one of those prophets today by the name of Amos these are outlined for today’s class we’re first going to look at who was Amos what information do we know about this person what was his message his message of warning how is Israel supposed to respond what did God promise Israel in the distant future through Amos and then how can we apply the truths that we see in the Book of Amos let’s pray before we go on father we pray that you would work among your father or son of Holy Spirit please work among your people now sanctify instruct mature your people as we encounter this amazing book that you gave us through the prophet Amos and patient helped me to be able to communicate it clearly answer questions well and God I pray that this would be a time of growth for your church in Jesus name amen all right please open your Bibles to the Book of Amos but it’s in the Old Testament go past Isaiah Isaiah Ezekiel and Daniel and then it’s just three books more and there you’ll find Amos and you’re if you’re using the Pew Bible it’s on page 9 13. that’d be an easier way to find it but we’re looking at the Book of Amos it’s only nine chapters long one of the latter prophets you don’t have time to read the whole book but we will sample a number of passages in the book to give you a feel for the whole book but let’s start by asking our first question who was Amos and we get some information right in the first verse of the Book of Amos so look at chapter 1 verse 1.

and let’s read that first verse we’ll bring in another verse in just a moment but Amos 1 1. follow along as I read the words of Amos who was among the sheep herders from Toccoa which he envisioned envisions concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and the days of jeroboam son of joash king of Israel two years before the earthquake all right with just that let’s observe a number of things what is Amos profession he’s a shepherd shepherd or a sheep herder we do here later on in Amos 7 14-15 that he did some raising figs on the side I’ll just read those verses to you Amos 7 14-15 then Amos replied to amaziah I am not a prophet nor am I the son of a prophet for I am a herdsman and a grower of Sycamore figs but the Lord took me from following the flock and the Lord said to me go prophesy to My People Israel so Amos is a Shepherd he’s not a career Prophet or religious teacher but God took him from his work in the field to send an important message to the kingdom of or to send an important message now back in verse 1 it says that Amos is from Toccoa this is a little town about 10 miles south of Jerusalem so that means Amos was from Israel or from Judah if he’s from a town that’s south of Jerusalem you see from Israel or Judah yeah Judy Judah that’s right he’s a Judea or Judean he’s from Judah but which kingdom does his vision concern Israel so he’s a he’s someone from Judah who’s actually traveling to Israel to send a message his message is for Israel now Amos prophecy comes in the days of Uzziah and jeroboam and that would be jeroboam II not the first king of Israel so this place is Amos prophecy somewhere between 800 to 750 BC this also means that Amos was a contemporary of Jonah Hosea and Isaiah all ministering about the same time it says that this prophecy was given two years before the earthquake what is this earthquake we can’t say for sure but the book of Zechariah also records in Zechariah 14 5 there was a significant earthquake that took place during the reign of Uzziah Josephus the First Century A.D Jewish historian claims that this earthquake actually happened after Uzziah the king of Judah proudly attempted to offer incense instead of the priests in God’s Temple now the Bible doesn’t say anything about that but that was what Josephus claimed it was a significant earthquake that the people at the time would know about now what were conditions in Israel that’s the northern kingdom during ames’s time well II kings 14 23-29 tells us we won’t read that passage but it tells us about the time of jeroboam II it’s actually a time of prosperity time and prosperity in Israel after a time of formerly being downcast and oppressed their King though evil and a follower in the ways of the first jeroboam nonetheless had a long stable reign of 41 years that’s a that’s a blessing Israel saw military success under jeroboam II they restored much of the territory that had been lost under previous Kings and they even made territorial gains in Syria why had these good things happened especially to an evil King and an evil people well first the second Kings 14 26-27 tells us the reason it’s this is what it says for the Lord saw the Affliction of Israel which was very bitter for there was neither Bond nor free nor was there any helper for Israel the Lord did not say that he had blot out the name of Israel from under heaven but he saved them by the hand of jeroboam the son of joash in other words God simply was gracious he had compassion on the people even though they were not following after the Lord he said I’m going to be gracious I’m going to give you a measure of restoration I’m going to give you success and prosperity for a time under this King jeroboam II now that was to evoke a response for sure from Israel but how did Israel respond well let’s find out because that has a lot to do with amos’s message Amos is going to give a message of warning let’s see what that message actually says we’re looking at our second question now what was Amos warning well it starts with an image look just one verse down into verse two Amos 1 verse 2.

he said the Lord Roars from Zion and from Jerusalem he utters his voice and the shepherd’s pasture grounds mourn and the summit of Carmel dries up now this is a significant way to start his message a roar comes from what kind of animal a lion we normally associate lion or Roars with lions but here Amos says Yahweh roars the lion of Judah himself is roaring God Roars like a lion what is said to instantly react to the lion’s roar or to the Lord’s Roar what’s that well that would be a a sound of warning but there’s something right in verse two that actually reacts it changes because of this Roar right so the summon of Carmel and the shepherd’s pasture the land itself reacts it says it Mourns and it dries up notice the term Shepherd’s pasture grounds this isn’t any old land this is a land that has fertile pasture for sheep the Sheep may be currently enjoying some nice food on these pastures but what does the Lion’s Roar mean for them danger right if you’re a sheep and you hear a line roaring that means Danger it’s Danger and this is the way he starts his book by saying the Lord Roars the land reacts what about the Sheep already you can see Amos background playing a role in the way he declares the message but with sheep are in danger if you scan down chapter one you see that God pronounces a series of judgments on different kingdoms for the evils that they have done and all with the same formula look at Amos 1 3 it says thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Damascus and for four I will not revoke its punishment go down to Amos 1 6 thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Gaza and for four I will not revoke its punishment and we see the same formula with other kingdoms Tire in verse nine Edom in verse 11 Ammon in verse 13 and then if you go to verse 1 of chapter 2 Moab all having these pronouncements of judgment with the same formula for three transgressions and for four I will not revoke its punishment by the way why would these nations be relevant to Israel Ammon Moab Damascus Gaza they’re the neighbors exactly they are all of Israel’s neighbors on different sides so um there are messages of judgment for each of these neighbors now notice the repeated rhetorical device involving numbers what is God emphasizing by denoting a judgment for three scratch that four Wicked Acts what is he emphasizing yeah Ron we were talking about this yes certainly it emphasizes the the repetition of these sins but specifically the idea of three rather four why say it like that yeah Danny yeah yeah I think you’re absolutely right Danny it has to do with the fullness of the Judgment or the fullness of the sin that brings the Judgment it’s like well John McArthur describes it well in his Study Bible with three the cup of iniquity was full and judgment was warranted with four it overflowed it’s almost like he’s saying they were already ripe but then they added more to it they’re extremely right for judgment it was three scratch that four judgments that are bringing the Lord’s Fury just as you were saying Danny now certainly we shouldn’t take that absolutely literally it’s not that they did three specific or four specific evil acts there are many more evil acts than that but this is a this is just a way of rhetorically emphasizing how each nation is right for judgment now up to this this point you probably would have gotten a or Amos probably would have gotten a hearty amen from the people of Israel yeah go lion go get those evil neighbors get those sheep but now look at chapter 2 verse 4.

thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Judah and for four I will not revoke its punishment oh and now verse six thus says the Lord for three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not revoke its punishment what is God saying about Israel in comparison to the other nations just like the other nations they are just as wicked just as deserving of God’s punishment their cup of iniquity is also overflowing and calling out for the justice of God Yahweh comes for them too like a lion coming for sheep what Israel’s has evil or what evils has Israel committed well let’s read and observe verses six to eight with each one of these pronouncements of judgment God outlined some of the sins that the people have committed what does he say about Israel because they sell the righteous for money and the needy for a pair of sandals these who pant after the very dust of the Earth on the head of the helpless also turn aside the way of the humble and a man and his father resort to the same girl in order to profane my holy name on garments taken as pledges they stretch out beside every Altar and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined now these are kind of given quickly to us but what are the sins that God is indicting in Israel what’s one of them say that yeah a form of immorality here where you have a father and son going to the same um the same woman that I think is representative of immorality as a whole what else idolatry right and we see that with the altars um in the very end they stretch out beside every altar in the house of their God so we have false worship what else yeah they sell the righteous for money and the needy for a pair of sandals the they are oppressing the poor and they are oppressing the righteous I think we can say there’s also one more maybe just hinted at here but definitely explained a little bit more directly later on in the book but this idea of um they are stretching out on garments and drinking wine this idea of a luxurious living that pays little attention to God there’s immorality there’s false worship there’s great oppression of the poor for financial gain and there’s this materialistic pleasure-seeking living in the nation what will be the consequences for these sins and others like these well it does say a little bit in Chapter 2 itself but I think we get a uh a better idea that in chapter three look at chapter three and verse 8.

we’re going to see what is the consequence for these sins chapter 3 verse 8 we’ll read down to verse 13.

a lion has roared who will not fear the Lord God has spoken who can but prophesy Proclaim on the citadels and ashdod and on the citadels and the land of Egypt and say assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria and see the great tumults within her and the oppressions in her midst they do not know how to do what is right declares the Lord these who hoard up violence and Devastation in their citadels therefore thus says the Lord God an enemy even one surrounding the land will pull down your strength from you and your citadels will be looted thus says the Lord just as the shepherd snatches from the lion’s mouth a couple of legs or a piece of an ear so will the sons of Israel dwelling in scenario Samaria be snatched away with the corner of a bed and the cover of a couch hear and testify against the house of Jacob declares the Lord God the god of hosts let’s observe notice the image of God as the roaring lion once again with what specifically is God’s Roar connected in verse 8.

we’re not just talking about a symbolic Roar it’s tied to something that’s tangible his speech right his word or we could even say prophecy the Lord God has spoken who can but prophesy God’s Roar is God’s word God invites Israel’s Pagan neighbors to come give witness of something of what will these neighbors testify they’re going to look at something in Samaria what are they looking at tumults oppressions that they don’t know how to do anything right violence and devastation says you’re going to see all of these things and therefore something is going to happen to Israel what does God promise will happen in verse 11.

an enemy will come verse 11 an enemy will come they will surround they will destroy the citadels and they will plunder the land and then there’s this violent image in verse 12.

what is the image there’s a snatching going on who’s snatching what well there is a lion but it’s actually not the lion doing the snatching yeah soon yeah exactly it’s like a lion has grasshold of a sheep the shepherd’s trying to pull the Sheep out of the lion’s mouth but all he’s getting are a few body parts a couple legs the piece of an ear he’s not able to get the whole land it’s taken by the lion what does God say this snatching of the Shepherd pictures Israel being snatched away from Samaria Israel being snatched away from the land and God also says those snatched away will escape with only the corner of the bed and the cover of a couch all right let’s interpret this what is God’s Roar it’s the prophecy you could even say it’s the Book of Amos this is the word of the Prophet to Israel listen to the Lion’s Roar this is God’s Roar listen by inviting Israel’s neighbors to observe Samaria what does God emphasize about Samaria and Israel look at the oppressions look at the how they don’t know how to do anything right look at the violence why would he invite Israel’s neighbors to see that what is he emphasizing about Israel are the neighbors righteous no they’re Wicked and Pagan themselves so why bring them to look at Israel okay it could be partly a warning to those Nations but what else yeah Danny yeah I think that’s definitely true too he’s showing them that it doesn’t matter even if they’re his own people he will judge wickedness I think we can also say that it’s to emphasize just how Wicked Israel is the other nations are kind of these other Wicked nations are kind of come look and be like wow they’re really evil even though these other nations are wicked themselves they’re gonna say these these people in Israel and Samaria they are very Wicked they’re going to give testimony to the great wickedness of Israel even exceeding their own but of course they will also be warned of the Judgment themselves now think about the image again in verse 12 because it’s very important that we appreciate the details is the majority of the Lamb snatched away by the shepherd or just the minor bits and pieces just the bits and pieces what happens to the rest of the Lamb then what it’s destroyed it’s eaten by the lion it’s consumed verse 12 says that Israel be snatched from Samaria in the same way as the shepherd snatches those bits therefore what will happen to the minority of Israelites that’s right they won’t be destroyed if they’re being snatched away they are the ones being taken in Exile which means the majority then will be what they’ll be destroyed they’ll be the ones that are consumed by The Lion now some would say no no the minority represents the people left in the land and the majority are taken away but that doesn’t fit the image the lion is not the one doing the snatching it is the shepherd it says it is the shepherd snatching that is going to be like what happens to my people in Israel just a couple of legs just the piece of an ear will be snatched and taken away the rest will be destroyed and consumed that’s right the line is the one doing the destruction is the shepherd at least in that image that is doing the saving and carrying away so if this is what’s going to happen to Israel Israel God is saying Israel will be destroyed but I say by surviving Remnant will be carried away and will be taken into exile and then we have that last statement what is God indicating about the survivors when he mentions the corner of a bed and the cover of a couch It’s Kind of a Funny detail we could say it indicates perhaps a couple of things yeah right yeah it’s like um well maybe not so much survive but it is the idea that you only got like the smallest bit to take with you it’s like um you couldn’t take the whole bed you only got a corner of it you couldn’t take the whole couch you just got the cover of it like that’s all you could take I think that indicates the the suddenness of the snatching they were yanked away so quickly that’s all they could take but what else does this image of the bed and couch indicate not only do they are they able to escape with little and it’s a sudden snatching as if they were yanked from their beds but also they are on their beds and we already heard them a little bit already heard a little bit earlier about how they’re reclining and drinking wine this is another image of their luxurious living they’re not ready for something to come upon them they’re just enjoying their luxury they’re you know remember back to David and the cinema bathshebo where was he right before that sin took place on his bed not doing anything not going out with the people of Israel so this this idea of only taking a corner of a bed or cover a couch it’s like Israel was just enjoying its sleep enjoying its luxurious rest and suddenly they’re yanked away and they only can take the corner of a bed or the cover of a couch they can barely take anything with them those that even survive so this is a severe judgment this is fearful news for the flock of Israel no wonder the land instantly dries up at even the pronouncement of it in Amos 1 2. God says great Calamity is coming upon Israel because of their great evil now we only got to see the initial pronouncement of that evil but if we were to keep going on in the Book of Amos we would see more specific descriptions and I’ll share a couple of them with you just so that you can get it filled out in your mind Amos 4 1 2 and you can flip through these if you like as I read them God says hear this word you cows of Bashan who are on the mountain of Samaria who oppressed the poor who crushed the needy who say to your husbands bring now that we may drink just a couple verses down Amos 4 4-5 enter Bethel and transgress in gilgal multiply transgression bring your sacrifices every morning your ties every three days offer a thank awesome thank offering also from that which is leavened and Proclaim Free Will offerings make them known for so you love to do you sons of Israel declares the Lord God now he’s not actually commending them there that’s some Divine sarcasm it says you’re going to your sacred places you’re bringing your offerings but you’re not even bringing the right offerings and you’re doing transgressions the whole time Amos 5 12.

God says for I know your transgressions are many and your sins are great you who do stress the righteous and accept bribes and turn aside the poor in the gate down to verse 21 verse 23 the same chapter I hate I reject your festivals nor do I Delight in your solemn assemblies even though you offer up to me burn offerings and your grain offerings I will not accept them and I will not even look at the peace offerings of your fat links take away from me the noise of your songs I will not even listen to the sound of your harps and the name is six verses four to seven those who recline on beds of Ivory and sprawl on couches and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall who improvise the sound of the harp and like David have composed songs for themselves who drink wine from sacrificial bowls while they anoint themselves with the finest of oils yet they have not grieved over the ruin of Joseph therefore they will now go into Exile at the head of the Exiles and the sprawlers banqueting will pass away so you’re seeing re-emphasize the same things that God first condemned in Israel back in chapter two you are pressing the poor you are oppressing the Righteous you are seeking to gain wealth for yourself you’re looking to live luxuriously with no attention to what is righteous no attention to God and then on top of all that you pretend to worship me I hate all of this this is all evil and this is made even more heinous considering who Israel actually is they are a special people just go back to Amos 2 9-11 actually won’t read that passage but God reminds Israel that he previously was the one who destroyed their enemies he destroyed the um I think the amorites he gave Israel the land of Canaan he raised up prophets for Israel and then Israel just left the Lord they silenced the prophets they went after other gods God also says in Amos 3 1-2 hear this word which the Lord has spoken against you sons of Israel against the entire family which he brought up from the land of Egypt you only have I chosen among all the families of the Earth therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities your evil is even greater considering Who You Are you are my people look at what I’ve done for you continually and as we saw in the beginning he had just given them a period of prosperity that was totally undeserved what did they do with it they use it as an excuse to turn away from God oh everything is going well let’s just enjoy life get the wine let’s go have a Pleasant worship experience at the at gilgal or Bethel Israel’s evil was quite quite great Israel’s got special people for whom he had done such Mighty Works yet Israel was acting more wicked now than their wicked neighbors Israel was indeed ripe for judgment and God like a roaring lion was warning through Amos he was warning the doomed sheep of Israel question so far by the way I apologize for the flickering I know that keeps going on sorry that’s distracting sound uh sound people is there anything I should do with my computer no nothing nothing right now okay hopefully this stays relatively stable yeah Rob OT yeah usually but in this case you’re saying is still actually lazy and laying on the bed all day okay a good question Rob am I saying that the remnant because normally The Remnant is the remnant of the righteous we often hear the remnant of various Nations being the righteous but we had this description of certain people being destroyed and certain people being carried away the remnant being carried away are am I saying that they’re evil just like the rest and that’s why it’s happening to them we actually don’t get any description of why certain people are saved and certain people are not why are some allowed to lift are they more righteous are they um is there something else that’s particular about them we know as we’re going to hear in just a moment part of the reason why Remnant survives is that God is just going to be gracious to Israel he’s going to remember his Covenant he’s not going to destroy them utterly but I think we can also say from some of the other prophets writing the in the end of the Old Testament that it is the righteous who are often the ones who are surviving it is the righteous who are being spared people like um I think Jeremiah comes to mind with Judah and and Daniel and some others they are the ones that go into Exile and they continue to look to the Lord but I can’t say that necessarily everyone who goes into Exile was righteous so far in in the Book of Amos we don’t get a description of why certain certain people survive and other people don’t other questions yeah Joe good question how is Amos and the other prophets alike him how do they actually communicate the message are they standing in the marketplace are they going into the king’s court how are they actually talking to the people well we don’t get a description of that at least in the Book of Amos we we will see at one point how a priest and the King react to Amos I imagine that he’s not going straight into the king’s hall because it sounds like there’s a report that gets sent to the king so I’m I would guess that he’s just going to public places and trying to speak to the people so that they would listen but we’re not told specifically sometimes okay you’re asking a question can you asking for how how did the Kings of Israel get appointed into their position or how do they come to have their position it varies a little bit sometimes a person will lead a coup against the previous King sometimes with a measure of um not condoning but God actually anoints that leader and he says you are going to be the one that I’m raising up to judge this person’s house that was the case of jihu on the house of Ahab through his son and he destroyed the previous house and took the throne for himself but other times during Israel’s history the sun did succeed the father and I think that is the case with jeroboam we heard that earlier jeroboam II was the son of joash so he actually just inherited the throne from his father so it does vary sometimes God doesn’t anoint a specific ruler to replace the previous ruling house but other times it’s just the normal succession we have to keep moving on so hold on to your other questions we’ve seen Amos message of warning but how is Israel supposed to respond because this isn’t simply a message of Doom there is something that Israel can do well you could probably already ask that question what was Israel supposed to do God prophesies this judgment it’s for the point of Israel actually doing what it repent turn back to the Lord repent Turn Away From Evil turn back to the Lord but by the time Amos is prophesying Israel’s not doing that even though they’ve had plenty of opportunities look at Amos chapter 4 verses 6 to 13.

you can see that Amos is not coming out of nowhere this has been part of a process Amos 4 verse 6.

God says to Israel but I gave you also cleanness of teeth in all your cities and lack of bread in all your places yet you have not returned to me declares the Lord furthermore I withheld the rain from you while there were still three months until Harvest then I would send rain on one city and on another city I would not send rain one part would be rain on while the part the part not rained on would dry up so two or three cities would stagger to another city to drink water but would not be satisfied yet you’ve not returned to me declares the Lord I smote you a scorching wind and mildew and the caterpillar was devouring your many Gardens and Vineyards fig trees and olive trees yet you have not returned to me declares the Lord I sent a plague among you after the manner of Egypt I slew your young men with a sword along with your captured horses and I made the stench of your Camp rise up in your nostrils yet you have not returned to me declares the Lord I overthrew you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and you were like a fire brand snatched from a blaze yet you have not returned to me declares the Lord therefore thus will I do to you o Israel because I will do this to you prepare to meet your God o Israel well actually just stop right there so what lesser judgments has God already sent on Israel to turn them back what was one of them trout what was another Daniel yeah the mildew which would have affected the crops and the caterpillar so that would be part of a famine and he mentions famine Also earlier some different reasons why the crops fail what else I sent you a plague like I sent them plagues of Egypt and what was it one more yeah Judy what we have drought yes I sent people to attack you yeah he says um I sent I slew your young men by the sword along with your captured horses so famine drought plague Conquest defeat in battle but Israel’s response every time repeated the same way in the passage yet you have not returned to me therefore God says verse 12 prepare to meet your God but this is not a meeting of comfort or Deliverance this isn’t like that other passage behold your God o Israel like yes the deliverer the Savior no that’s not how he’s coming prepare to meet your God he’s coming in judgment the lion is coming but even still there was something that Israel could do look at Amos chapter 5.

    Amos chapter 5 verse 4.

and we’ll read to verse 7.

verse 4 for thus says the Lord to the house of Israel seek me that you may live but do not resort to Bethel and do not come to gilgown nor cross over to Beersheba for gilgal will certainly go into captivity and Bethel will come to trouble seek the Lord that you may live or he will break forth like a fire or o House of Joseph and it will consume with none to quench it for Bethel for those who turn Justice into one word and cast righteousness down to the Earth what could Israel still do they could repent they could seek the Lord and live God commands them to do this he’s pleading with them to do this it tells them not to resort to Bethel gilgal or Beersheba which were their useless sites of idolatrous worship where Sheba was actually in Judah so apparently they had spread their worship there God says don’t look for salvation uselessly and any other God turn to me and live the only way to avoid the judgment is to turn to me and what does turning to God mean well he makes it a little bit clearer in verse 14 verses 14 and 15.

seek good and not evil that you may live and thus may the Lord God of hosts be with you just as you have said hate evil love good and establish justice in the gate perhaps the Lord God of hosts may be gracious to the remnant of Joseph so we see what turning to God means what seeking God means trusting him loving him being obedient to him repent God says turn from your wicked way love God and love Justice and then there’s this perhaps statement the speaker acknowledges that even though their evil is so great as to perhaps make judgment on the kingdom unavoidable repentance might still totally save them perhaps God could spare Israel from this judgment now is he right if the people of Israel repented as a whole would God relent in his judgment he would and we could know that because where else do we see that same thing demonstrated yeah between Nineveh right in fact remember Jonah is a contemporary of Amos so this was happening around the same time and it’s even spoken about in the same language Jonah 3 verses 8 to 9 the king of Nineveh or the yeah the the king of Nineveh instructs his people but both man and beef must be covered with sackcloth and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his Wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands same thing Israel was called to do who knows God may turn and relent and withdraw his Burning Anger so that we will not perish Perhaps Perhaps God will turn away and that’s exactly what God does Jonah 3 10 when God saw their deeds that they turned from their wicked way then God relented concerning the Calamity which he had declared he would bring upon them and he did not do it now this is not God being changeable this is not God being like a man and changing his mind this is the way he always acts this is his character his judgment is always in a sense conditional as long as you keep not repenting the judgment will come but if you turn back to the Lord you’ll be spared Israel could still be spared there was still hope as long as the Judgment had not yet come the kingdom could still be spared if they repented if they turned from evil God would relent God will let them live and God would even bless them again but would Israel repent we see a an ominous response already in the Book of Amos look at chapter 7.

    chapter 7 verses 10 to 13.

    chapter 7 verse 10.

then Amazonia the priest of Bethel sent word to jeroboam King of vigil saying Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the House of Israel the land is unable to endure all his words for thus Amos says jeroboam will die by The Sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile then amaziah said to Amos go you Seer flee away to the land of Judah and there eat bread and there do your prophesying but no longer prophesy at Bethel for it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence so we see two of the leaders of Israel one a religious one the political they are not repenting but more than that what else do they seek to do I don’t simply refuse to react the way that Amos wants them to and God wants them to on top of that what do they want to do to Amos they want to silence him they want to get rid of him they don’t want to hear this prophecy anymore they don’t want the people to hear it either they want to shut up God’s prophet and want to get rid of him I don’t want to hear the word anymore and they don’t want the people to hear it either and this seems to be the the way people will reacting to Amos as a whole yeah what are we gonna say Dwayne exactly we’ll talk a little bit later on but that does sound like the way things are today therefore God prophesied one other judgment by Amos and perhaps it’s the most frightening of all turn to Amos chapter eight actually I guess it’s right in front of you Amos 8 verses 11 and 12.

Israel’s leaders want to silence Amos they don’t want to hear the word of the Lord anymore verse 11 and 12 chapter 8. behold days are coming declares the Lord God when I will send a famine on the land not a famine for bread or a thirst for water but rather for hearing the words of the Lord people will stagger from sea to Sea and from the north even to the east they will go to and fro to seek the word of the Lord but they will not find it so what is God’s response to Israel’s desire to shut up His prophets God says I’ll give you what you want you don’t want to hear their Prophets I won’t let you hear their prophets anymore you no longer be given my Revelation that could save you instead you will die in your sins that’s what you want that’s what I’ll give you that will be my judgment and though this could find fulfillment in different times with Israel this certainly found fulfillment during the Exile many people of Israel were dispersed into lands with new gods and no faithful Jewish priests or Levites to instruct them in the way of the Lord they lost access they were cut off from God’s saving word that was his judgment so the picture is Bleak as you come to the final chapter of Amos Israel if you turn you will be spared God’s judgment seem unwilling therefore God will spare the faithful ones among you but the rest of you will be destroyed and taken into exile we see how Israel was supposed to respond certainly there was still hope by the time of amos’s writing because that’s why he’s written this book says still listen repent turn to seek the Lord and live maybe even if the whole nation doesn’t do it you individually do it but then there’s one more word from Amos a surprising word a word regarding the distant future of Israel I want us to look at that before we come to our final conclusions and applications look at chapter 9 verse 8.

Israel is shown to be completely Wicked they’re not repenting God says in Amos 9 8 behold the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful Kingdom and I will destroy it from the face of the Earth nevertheless I’m not totally destroyed the house of Jacob declares the Lord and then verses 11 I’m sorry yeah verses 11 to 15.

God speaks of another day in that day I will raise up the Fallen Booth of David and wall up its breaches and I will raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name declares the Lord who does this behold days are coming declares the Lord when the plowman will overtake the Reaper and The Treader of grapes him who sow seed when the mountains will drip sweet wine and all the hills will be dissolved also I will restore the Captivity of My People Israel and they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them they will also plant Vineyards and drink their wine and make Gardens and eat their fruit I will also plant them on their land and they will not again be rooted out from their land which I’ve given them says the Lord your God this is amazing and this is very surprising considering the rest of this book what are the different promises that God is giving here regarding Israel’s future what’s one of them right back in verse 8 he says I won’t destroy you completely what else yes Danielle that’s right he’s going to restore their prosperity in fact there’s a that image in verse 12 I’m sorry verse 13. it’s a little bit confusing at first but it’s an image of prosperity and abundance the idea that Plowman overtaking the Reaper most likely refers to that there is such an abundant Harvest the people have not finished harvesting it before it’s time to plant new seed so the the plowman is overtaking the reaper because the reaper has too much to take in it’s going to be abundance there’s going to be so much abundance that when it comes to the grapes on the hills and mountains of the land it’s going to be so abundant the mountains themselves are dripping with wine and it’s almost like they’re dissolving in the wine there’s so much of it so we’ve got prosperity and abundance coming people will not be destroyed what else they’ll be planted in the land and they’ll never be taken out of it again yeah now that’s really right this would also be very surprising verse 12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations were called by my name that where Nations can also be translated Gentiles this is referring to non-israelites it says they’re going to be possessed they’re going to be ruled and led by Israel and yet they’re not simply subjugated because these nations are called by my name they’re going to be worshipers along with Israel and then there’s that promises about things being rebuilt now verse 11 there’s some difference of interpretation here the Fallen Booth of David does that refer to Jerusalem because that was the dwelling place of David what does it refer to the house the dynasty of David some difference there the word is not house it’s Booth so you can argue maybe different ways but there’s a promise of rebuilding either Jerusalem or the davidic kingship there’s gonna I promise that Gentile Nations will be ruled and led by Israel extreme prosperity and abundance a return from captivity to the land and then a promise never to be taken from the land again amazing amazing way to end this book now let’s step back running a long time but we’ll want to take some time to come to some conclusions based on what we’ve read how does God reveal his character in this book consider all his interactions how is he showing who he is yeah we see that and what what aspect does that show have gone it’s merciful right that’s our thing Justice and mercy God’s mercy and giving them time to repent and sending lesser judgments and promising this restoration and various other things we see God’s mercy God’s kindness God’s heart this is not deserved but he does it because that’s the kind of God he is what else yeah Rob God’s holiness right he does not uh and his Justice he is so holy and just that if his own people require judgment he will send it he has to do it their evil is even more reprehensible than the evil of others because there’s people he is a holy and just God we could point out other aspects here he’s a God who keeps Covenant either to blessed order curse he’s being faithful to keep his Covenant according to the curses that he promised to Israel but he’s going to be faithful to also relents of judgment if they repent and also to bring them back into the land just as he promised back in Deuteronomy we see that God is powerful and Sovereign he’ll bring the Assyrians he um he will cause all these things to happen to Israel he’s holy and just he takes sin extremely seriously he’s patient and merciful he loves Justice and goodness you can see that sin is not a victimless crime the people are harming themselves they are defaming God and they are harming others again and again in the book he says this is what you’re doing to the poor this is what you’re doing to the righteous you’re oppressing them you’re taking advantage of them you’re selling them I see that I’m going to vindicate them and I’m going to judge you and we see God’s care for the lowly and oppressed and of course these are the many same aspects of God we see throughout the scriptures God doesn’t change he’s displaying his attributes here and he still has those attributes so of course that’s going to be relevant for our application I think I’ve already mentioned why Amos wrote this book this was a call to repentance for the people at his own time but even for the people afterwards anyone who hears it remember this is the kind of God you’re dealing with turn back to the Lord and now back to Amos 9.

we know how things turn out for Israel they don’t repent within 50 to 75 years God is still patient with them but then he brings the Judgment he brings the promised judgment Kingdom the Kingdom of Israel is removed and the survivors are taken Beyond Damascus and Beyond the Euphrates but have the promises of Amos 9 been fulfilled we could only answer partially it’s true that God later brought some back from Israel and Judah back into the land this happened under the Persian Empire it’s true that these returners experience some measure of blessing for a time but they also experience trouble and persecution it’s true that Jerusalem was rebuilt if that was the meaning of Amos 9 11. it’s even true that James the brother of John cites Amos 912 actually that might be James the brother of Jesus cites Amos 9 12 during the Jerusalem Council as proof that the Gentiles have a place in God’s kingdom and in God’s salvation plans he goes back and says look Amos said so that’s acts 15 verses 13 to 18 by the way I would nonetheless argue though these promises have not yet been fully realized Israel has not possessed not ruled and led certainly not cooperatively the Gentile Nations Israel has not experienced the extreme Prosperity described in Amos 9 13.

and Israel has never been permanently secure in its land let’s not forget that though some Jews were brought back into Palestine under the Persians the Jews were removed again from the land after a series of revolts under Rome in 1866 to 81-36 their nation was dissolved the people were dispersed and there was no Jewish Nation for more than 1500 years the Jews were dispersed in the world and did not have a state let alone a state in Palestine until 1948 and though that state exists today it is hardly secure it is under constant threat from its neighbors so rather than saying that Israel’s return unto Persia fulfilled these prophecies or that Israel in the church spiritually fulfills these prophecies I submit that we have not seen their fulfillment yet not their full fulfillment like the Prophecies of Moses regarding a permanently circumcised heart for Israel so we see here that God has plans for Israel’s Restoration in the future and I would say that is in Christ’s Second Coming but what does the Book of Amos mean for us we’re not a northern kingdom we’re not under the threat of the Syrian Invasion so why does this matter we’ve only got about a minute so I’ll just list some application questions for you we certainly see here that when it comes to that notion that God is love God is good and he forgives and he would never judge sin or send anyone or never get angry over sin or send anyone to hell that’s just not the god of the Bible that’s an incomplete picture of God and you can just go straight to the Book of Amos and show no first of all we can see God’s math right here we can see his Holiness but second of all because he’s good and loving he must judge sin because sin is so reprehensible and it hurts so many people the only way we can know what God’s character truly is is by going to where he revealed it and we’re not going to get that just by looking around the world or even looking at creation the only clear revelation of God comes through the Bible and clear revelation of his character but we’ve already alluded that though we’re not Israel in the situation that they were our situation is not that different because we also have a judgment coming the world also has a judgment coming the son of man will return Jesus will return and he will judge each man according to his deeds and just as he explained in the gospels he was telling people in light of that how should you be acting Psalm 2 12 says do homage to the son that he not become angry and you perish in the way for his wrath May soon be kindled we’re in the same situation as Amos the world is in the same situation and people are doing the same thing as Israel was doing living luxuriously oppressing the poor pressing the righteous persecuting the righteous living immorally all the same things God’s judgment is kindled on our world and on us today we need to seek the Lord that we may live and we also need to be like Amos we’re not commissioned prophets in the same way that he was but we are commissioned in a similar way just as Jesus disciples were we have to end right now but next week we look at another Prophet Israel Hosea who brings another surprising message and the title of the next lesson is God’s God loves Israel we’ll see how he was going to act based on that love if you have other questions please see me afterwards let’s pray father father we thank you for this word it is a sobering word because the same truths that were true for Israel and Amos during that time are true for us today the lion roars you roar God your judgment is coming you’ve made that known in your word and people everywhere must repent no one will escape you will not wink at any sin all evil must be judged by you because you are holy and just and yet God you are merciful anyone who turns to you leaves aside the evil way and repents follows after you you will rescue you will protect him from the Judgment he will spare him and you will bring him into your most intimate Fellowship well thank you for that God we thank you for doing that for us those who believe pray for those who don’t believe that they would turn and be saved in Jesus name amen
