    Visual Memorials of God’s Faithfulness

In this special Father’s Day sermon, Pastor Joe Babij considers Joshua 4 and God’s command to Joshua to memorialize the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River. Pastor Babij explains that Christians, too, need to be purposeful in visually memorializing the great works of God in our lives, both for our own sake and for the sake of the next generation. Pastor Babij outlines three general purposes of memorials:

    1. A provision for remembering (vv. 6-7)
    2. A provision for reminding (vv. 7-13, 20)
    3. A provision for retooling the rising generation (vv. 6-7, 20-24)

I want you to go to chapter 4 of Joshua. Joshua is a book a lot like the Christian life. The Lord has done everything for the people, but they were required to go get the land and possess the land that they were inherited from the Lord. So in a very real way, the people were like soldiers. And Christians are like soldiers in the Lord’s army. If we as God’s people are going to have successful conquest, then we must be fighting with the spiritual weapons at our disposal.

Now from Joshua, those spiritual weapons were believing in the promises of God, all in chapter one. Also meditating on the word of God. And a third weapon was an awareness of the perpetual presence of God. Those were the weapons that they really had to fight and to win. Strength, courage, and success come from these three areas. Also, as we as God’s people press forward on our spiritual conquest as believers, we will want to incorporate visual reminders of God’s faithfulness, being able to see what God is doing, what God has done in our life.

In 1988, just about three years after I came here, we just had a handful of people and half were saved, half weren’t. The mortgage was huge. The property was in disrepair. The building was falling apart. The parsonage was falling apart. The whole property was falling apart. And the bills were way more than we could afford. We just prayed, Lord do something. And three years after that on June 4th 1988, we paid off the mortgage. We had a big bond burning in the back of this building here. We got a big bowl, got the mortgage, and put it in the bowl and lit it on fire. That’s what we did. But you know, that event became a visual reminder of God’s faithfulness. When you trust God, He’s going to do things in your life and for believers and for God’s people as a whole in the church that only He could do. And it’s only the faithfulness of God’s people, praying and humbling themselves and serving him with their gifts in the church, that He does those things.

But when He does those things, we need to have some kind of visual reminder. You know why? Because we forget. And so on that day, we got a plate made, and it said on there to the glory of God, bond burning fourth of June 1988. The Scripture passage was in this case, moreover it is required for stewards, that one be found trustworthy or faithful, in 1 Corinthians 4:2. We put that up. It used to be by the sound booth. When we painted, it got moved around and never got back there, but it was on the wall and every time you look at it, it was a reminder that God did something. Now of course, as people come and go and they don’t understand or realize that or don’t even know what it’s about, you have to sometimes remind them what God has been doing.

So now the people have come out of the desert here in this passage of Scripture. They’re done with the wilderness wanderings. And so the people of Israel experienced a tremendous miracle and saw the mighty hand of God work right before their eyes. Israel’s self-awareness was really saturated with an understanding that their God can do anything. And He could do it for them. And whatever He did, it was by His mighty arm. So the events leading to entering the promised land or the land of Canaan was that the priests and the ark of the covenant remained in the riverbed while the people hurried across.

Now we’ll get to the Scripture in a minute. The presence of the Lord was there when the ark of the covenant was there. While the priest went into the middle of the riverbed, the waters parted and two million strong passed on dry ground. If you look at chapter 4 verse 22, it says,

then shall you shall inform your children, saying, ‘Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.’

Also, the men of the trans-Jordanian tribes were not hampered with families and goods when coming across. Remember, part of the inheritance was on the other side of the journey. But if they wanted that inheritance, they had to go fight with the people till they were all done. Then they can leave and go back home. So they weren’t hampered by families or any kind of herds or any kind of things they had to take with them. So they became in the sense the men who were going to fight, and they promised to fight. When all had crossed and a special mission of the memorials had been completed, the priest left the riverbed and resumed their position at the head of the people. And of course, once they got out from the Jordan, it resumed its flow of water.

So for people, for believers today, a crossing of the Jordan is a picture of entering into spiritual warfare to claim what God has already promised you. It is a life lived by faith and obedience. When turbulent waters of life press upon us, we must never lose sight of the God who is able to take us through. Just listen to what the prophet Isaiah said while he was reminding God’s people concerning God’s commitment to them. Isaiah 43 verse 2 says,

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.

So you have to ask yourself a question – do you have any rivers you think are uncrossable in your life? Do you have any mountains you can’t tunnel through? See, God specializes in things like that. God specializes in things thought impossible. He’ll do what no other friend could do because that’s who He is. So when the Lord works in the lives of His people and brings to pass what was thought unimaginable or impossible, then those events are sometimes marked by a memorial so people do not forget.

Now I want you to look at chapter 4 verses 1 through 5. It says,

Now when all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, “Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe, and command them, saying, ‘Take up for yourself twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet are standing firm, and carry them over with you and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge tonight.’” So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe, and Joshua said to them, “Cross again to the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel.

Now as they did that, the Lord wanted Joshua to make a memorial about that event. And memorials are important and have really great value to the believer. There are three really general purposes of memorials in our life. First one is that it is a provision for remembering. A memorial has a present, a past, and a future purpose. It shows that the Lord God worked in the past to benefit and protect the people, and that He is working in the present, and thus will continue to work in the future and bring to pass all that He has promised in the word of God.

So the first thing that we see is that the purpose of a memorial is first a provision for remembering. In verse number 6, he says let it be a sign among you. A sign is really a picture, an adaptation of divine presence. It’s like the sign that God gave Noah after the flood, the rainbow, letting people know that God has worked among them and that He will keep His promises. And they are not to forget He is ever-present. Even today, when a Christian looks at a rainbow, automatically your mind should go back to the story of when God did that and remind you God is still working. He’s still faithful. He has not flooded the whole world since that time, and He will not, because the next time as according to Peter, it’s going to be the judgment of fire.

Then I want you to notice he says there in verse number 6,

“Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ then you shall say to them, ‘Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.’ So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.”

So there it is. These stones are going to be taken out of the Jordan. Actually, there’s going to be two sets, one set set in Jordan and one set in Gilgal. And it was for a reminder. Actually was for their remembering so they would not forget. So there are several things that come together when there is a memorial event in the lives of God’s people. The first one is it is the display of God’s faithfulness to His promises. In verse number seven,

So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.

The last part of that verse. And then it’s going to be a display of the obedience among God’s people. In verse number 8,

Thus the sons of Israel did as Joshua commanded and they carried those stones and lodged them in their place and put them down there. So those two things, the faithfulness of God, and then our response is that of obedience to God, to God’s faithfulness. And that’s without having all our questions answered. That’s without having everything that we think we should know about the subject known. It’s trusting God because He’s faithful.

So the pile of stones were to bring God’s people to reflect on what happened on that great event. Now that is to think carefully about something God has done. And then to act reverently toward what God has done and give Him glory and give Him reverence. It includes really trusting God’s wonderful works and His person. It includes trust in God’s trustworthiness and His faithfulness towards His people. Remember, after 40 years of wandering, the reproach had been rolled away. Judgment laid behind them. They past through the place of judgment and they passed from death unto life and they were now in on the resurrection side of judgment, ready to enter the promised land. But then it also reflects God’s incredible, perfect timing. When God does something, it is right on schedule. Look at verse 19 of chapter 4,

Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth of the first month and camped at Gilgal on the eastern edge of Jericho.

Well, you know the 10th of the first month, what was that? The tenth of the first month, the very day 40 years before that the first passover lamb was selected in Exodus 12, which lead to the crossing of the Red Sea. Yet remember, God did something great for them that day and He’s done something great for them right here. So surely, they can trust Him for the days that lie ahead. And what does it say back there in Exodus chapter 12 verse 3,

Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, “On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers’ household, a lamb for each household. Now if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them; according to what each man should eat, you are to divide the lamb. Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight. Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.

And you know the story in the Old Testament, that when the death angel saw the blood, they were passed over from the judgment of God. And so what happens is that that’s exactly the picture that we got. In our mind, it is Christ death on the cross. When He shed His blood and you believe in Him by faith because He’s done all the work, then the judgment of God is passed from you. You don’t have to fear that anymore. He’s taken care of everything for you and I. So that becomes in our mind something we remember that God has done.

The second general purpose of a memorial is it is a provision for reminding. It’s different than a provision of remembrance. The difference would be because reminding usually happens after an event fades from one’s mind and you kind of even forget about it. So you again need a reminder. Visual things will remind us of what God has done. So the stones in the middle of the Jordan, the stones at Gilgal remind the people of that day when the Lord parted the waters and brought the people out of the desert into the promised land. They were never to forget that day and that visual memorial always reminded them. So if they forgot a bit, if that day was kind of distant to them because of their troubles of life and because of warfare, then once they’ve seen that pile of stones, it was to remind them again of what God has done.

So the people are going to walk by those stones. And when they travel back and forth to use the Jordan for various things, various reasons, every time they see those stones, they will be reminded. Whoever looks on them with any sobriety that God did something great amongst His people that historic day, and that event should never ever be forgotten whatsoever. Look at verse number 8 of chapter 4,

Thus the sons of Israel did as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, just as the Lord spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the lodging place and put them down there. Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing, and they are there to this day.

That’s the first pile of stones. And then verse 10 says,

For the priests who carried the ark were standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything was completed that the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people hurried and crossed; and when all the people had finished crossing, the ark of the Lord and the priests crossed before the people. The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over in battle array before the sons of Israel, just as Moses has spoken to them; about 40,000 equipped for war, crossed for battle before the Lord to the desert plains of Jericho.

So verse number 14 it says,

On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; so that they revered him, just as they had revered Moses all the days of his life.

Now that’s an important verse for Joshua because you know why, it is very hard to fill the shoes of Moses. But when the people saw, wait a minute, God’s doing the same thing with Joshua that He did with Moses, then they knew the hand of God was on Joshua. And so Joshua got elevated by God that day as a leader among the people. He went through all the land and conquered everything. He was able to give them an inheritance. That’s in chapter 24.

So it’s a historical event. This memorial is a visual memorial, but it is also a solemn reminder of how prone our hearts are to forget things. The psalmist writes in Psalm 106. He says,

They quickly forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel.

And then Psalm 106 verse 21, it says,

They forgot God their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, wonders in the land of Ham and awesome things by the Red Sea.

When Moses was the man of God then and God was working through them. So also these verses show forgetting led drifting far from God’s word and His people begin to take the practices of the heathen nations around them and began to sacrifice their children as a form of worship to heathen gods. Psalm 106 verses 37 and 38. This is a horrible thing when people forget what God has done and move away from Him. In verse number 37 it says,

They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons, and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrifice to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with the blood.

So how serious a crime it is to forget the things that God has done and not remind ourselves and have visual reminders that keep pulling us back to the reality of what God has done. We should never think that memorials don’t mean anything. They’re very important to God.

Now, if you’re right there in Joshua, turn to the next book real quick to Judges. Look at Judges 2:7-10. It says,

The people serve the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, at the age of one hundred and ten.

Look over the verse number 10,

All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel.

Now the question would be, why didn’t they know? All these great events that took place with Moses and with Joshua, why didn’t they know? They weren’t able. They didn’t passing down to the next generation what God had done. So in other words, the kids didn’t know. They didn’t know because the people forgot. They got too wrapped up in their inheritance. They got wrapped up in the comfortability of having their own land and their own property and their own livestock. And they were now in the promised land, not waiting for the manna to come down from heaven. They were growing their own crops and they were becoming self-sufficient. And you know what they did? They forgot God.

Could that happen to us? It happens to us all the time. We depend on money. We get to a certain place in our life. I think I can handle it. I think I got it covered. As we do that, we drift away from God. We don’t often say it. We don’t often detect it right away. But I tell you what, if you have a memorial to look at, it will remind you. It’ll pull your back to say, you’re thinking all wrong. You need to get back on track. You need to start serving the Lord like you did at one time. You’re too comfortable in your life. See the people forgot and didn’t think it important to remind their children of God’s works and faithfulness. They didn’t think it was important.

There’s a few historical examples that I could share with you about our recent history right here in the United States. On September 11th 2001, you all know what happened, right? But not everybody knows what happened because some kids weren’t born yet, right? Some kids may never know what happened. I don’t know, they may be living under a rock, but they’re not being taught certain things in places they ought to be. After 9/11, many towns across the globe raised money to put up memorials in their towns, often in very busy and central places so people would have a visual reminder of the great tragedy and loss of life that occurred on that beautiful September day in 2001. Probably everybody who was alive at that time knew exactly where you were and what you were doing on that day.

if you go to Somerville, some towns built their memorials from pieces of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Right there in Somerville, there’s a pillar, a part of the beam from the World Trade Center that they made a memorial around. And you go to many towns and they have these things there. And why is that there? So when somebody walks by that wasn’t born then and maybe don’t even know about it or somebody who’s visiting the country and they say, what’s this about? Then they can read the plaque, or somebody near can tell them what happened on that day. I would say most of the world knew what had happened, that were alive anyway.

So we have to let the memorials God has given us speak loud and be passed down accurately. And let us not go on living as if memorials God has given has no significance for the present and the future generations. They have tremendous significance.

So there’s a third general principle of a memorial and it’s a provision for retooling the rising generation. In verses 20 to 24 of chapter 4 of Joshua, it says this,

Those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. He said to the sons of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’ then you shall inform your children, saying, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as the Lord your God had done to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed; that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, so that you may fear the Lord your God forever.”

If you notice there, the responsibility was given to the fathers. Not only the fathers who led the nation, but the fathers who led their families. And fathers, it is father’s day, right? So fathers, what memorial events do you have in your life, that’s you’re going to pass down to your kids and you’re going to pass down to your grandkids. Now it may not be as significant as the crossing of the Jordan and God parting the waters. But there are going to be events in our life that are going to be events that we prayed about and that were impossible and God did it. In other words, have something to tell your children concerning the faithfulness of God. The memorials were for the upcoming generations. When the children would ask, what do these stones mean to you? It was the job of the father to tell them what they meant. And he better had known himself what they meant. See, that was the job of the fathers. Their fathers would recount in detail the great story and thus children would be caught up in the reverential awe and begin to relate to God with faith that they had not known before, to really say that God is involved with our lives. God is doing something in our life. He’s not far away. He is near us. He’s near us to work on our behalf.

So fathers, we are to inform our children and grandchildren from the stories of Scriptures, yes, but also from personal experience. God is still working in our life personally. He’s still answering prayer. Some of those prayers we need to mark as memorials and tell them to our kids and let our kids know. Listen, this is what God did for us. This is what God did for Israel, but this is what God did for us in our life, in our family.

But then again, if you noticed that there’s two things in verse 23 and 24. He mentions the dry ground that the recent people went over led by Joshua, and then he mentions the Red Sea led by Moses. He goes back. You know what that means? History is important. Getting history correct is important. They would not know unless someone told them. And what are they to know? Verse 24,

that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, so that you may fear the Lord your God forever.

That’s an evangelistic passage of Scripture, that when you relate to these memorials and these visual things of God’s faithfulness to your kids, that they will know something of God’s greatness and they may come to fear God because of what you told them. So let’s get serious about building memorials, about making conscious attempts to preserve the memory of the great things that God has done for us.

I mentioned that plate at the beginning because that is something that God did that was impossible. If you did the math, there’s no way you can pay off that mortgage in three years, but it was paid off. I don’t even know how. I couldn’t even tell you how. I was just surprised as anybody else when we did that. But see, that was a memorial event.

One memorial event that the church as a whole should never forget is the ordinance of the Lord’s table. Why did the Lord leave us the Lord’s table? Because the Lord’s table acts like a stone of remembrance. Those who partake are the ones who once were lost sinners under condemnation, and that event is a testimony that they have been passed over because of the blood of Christ and they have been given rest by God. When God the Father saw the blood and all those who have faith in the death of Christ, He free them from the judgment of God. And now being on the resurrection ground, God’s children can look forward not to judgment, but are united to the risen Christ and are alive onto God. So the Lord’s table points forward and anticipates Christ’s return. It looks backward to the cross and all it entails. And it looks to the present and reminds us that we His children are at peace with God through the blood of the cross. That’s what it reminds us of. And that’s the memorial He gave us. Do this as much as you do it as a church in remembrance of me. Remember.

You know why? These things up here, very leaky. And as you get older, the holes get bigger. Hey I don’t know how many times I go into a room and say – why am I here? I actually have to look around and think, I know I came here for a purpose. But I just can’t, and then finally it comes. Sometimes it doesn’t come actually. You know where I left my keys. You’re working, you lay them down to go up there to do that. You get distracted and all of a sudden, where’s my keys. And then you’re looking, and it takes another hour to find your keys. And then somebody else finds them and gives them to you. So this verse here is given as really to bring people to reverence the Lord and not forget.

So do you have any stones of remembrance? All of us have stones of remembrance. Some less concrete, some more, some more dramatic, others less. And God has given them to us to look back and rejoice, that we might reverence Him and serve Him in devoted faith.

There are several stones of remembrance in my own life. I will tell you one of them. I’ll mention a few of them, but I’ll tell you one of them. One of them was a trial that the Lord brought me to, where my friend died. That was a significant memorial event in my life. And then the second one would be that of my father’s conversion after witnessing to him for twenty-five years and seeing him trust Christ and then baptizing him. It was a memorial event. I’ll never forget that. A memorial event is not just an event. It’s an event that remind you of God’s faithfulness. Do you know how many times I gave up in 25 years witnessing to my dad? I gave up a lot. But you know what, I kind of pick it up again and I used to pray, Lord just let my father ask me a question. I’m not going to bring it up, and he always did. So I brought the Bibles and he ended up getting saved.

And then there were other events, when God spared me from the car accident which I flipped over my Jeep, landed on the roof. And if it wasn’t for the Jeep, I could have been crushed in there. But the jeep has a roll bar. And the thing about it is, when I flipped over and I opened the door, the door is lodged against the mountain. There’s a little bit space to get out. I crawled out and I shake myself off, and there’s like 30, 40 people walking around my Jeep already. I’m shaking myself off and I look at them. There’s nothing wrong. I didn’t even have a scratch. So when that happened, I asked my daughter Elizabeth to paint me a picture. When I was leaving the Jeep, I picked up one reflector, a turn signal reflector, and I stuck it in my pocket. Later on, I pulled it out of my pocket, and I said I’m going to make a memorial event out of this, and I had her draw a picture and put that reflector right in the middle of it. And she did. You know what, every time I see that picture, you know what I think of? God’s faithfulness. He protected me that day. He let me know life is short and I’m still going to allow you to serve Me a little bit more longer. Every time I see it, that’s all that comes to my mind. Nothing else comes to my mind, not even the accident comes to my mind. That comes to my mind.

See that’s a memorial event. And then when people walked in the room, my nephew walked in the room. He says, what’s that picture? and I told him the whole story. I related to him God’s faithfulness to me on that day and His protecting me. So that became a memorial event in my life in which I have shared with others to testify of God’s goodness and faithfulness.

So you have events like that. You’ve got to think about them. You’ve got to think, what did God deliver you from? It could have been a sickness. It could have been the birth of a child. It could have been you couldn’t have a child, and now you have one. It could have been buying a house. There’s no way you could have afford it, and now the mortgage is paid off. It could be anything. Of course, it could be witnessing to a family member for years and all of a sudden they come to know the Lord. And you know what? You may have not been the one leading them to the Lord, but they came and you were part of the process. That’s a memorial event about the faithfulness of God, keeping you on the track so you live for Him and give Him the glory and praise that is due His name. I told my daughter Elizabeth after she did this painting that you should start a business calling it event art or memorial event art, but she didn’t get that yet. Maybe one of these days, I don’t know. So we need a pile of stones of remembrance and share them with our children and with our family. A memorial posted down properly and responded to correctly can inform a generation of people who may eventually fear God and honour His name. Because when you have that, it may lead to sharing the gospel, so you can have an evangelistic event because of that memorial.

Someone suggested to me, I think it may be my reading years ago, that we should take as God’s people two large index cards and two small stones, and then bring to memory at least two memorial events and write them on the index cards. And then glue one stone to each card, and then frame at least one of them and put it on a wall or at a place which you walked by often, to be reminded. Then someone visiting your home may say to you, what is this card and this frame and this stone? And you can give to them the great goodness of God. That’s not a bad idea actually. Then you can tell them of God’s great faithfulness and goodness in your life, and how His presence was significantly experienced in this event at that time in my life.

Now saying all that, let’s turn to Joshua chapter 24. Joshua chapter 24, last chapter of Joshua, so he’s summing things up. And Joshua, what does he do? He reviews the faithfulness of God. Dave read this morning, don’t have time to read all those verses now, but he reviews the faithfulness of God to God’s people, so God’s people would not forget and have really a good and continued success in their walk and their faithfulness to the Lord. So Joshua reviews what the Lord has done for Israel in giving the land to the tribes. He demonstrates His loyalty. And He says to them He will continue to be with His people so the enemies cannot come against them and win. He will fulfill every outstanding promise, even as He has already fulfilled His promises.

So, the Lord has been faithful. So in this last chapter, the challenge is for His people to persevere in their loyalty to Him now. God has been loyal to you, now you be loyal to Him. That’s what he says. Loyalty to the Lord is not apart from loyalty even to the law of Moses because the law tells us what pleases God and how it brings the hearts sin so you can repent and turn from it.

So the address ends with a covenant renewal at Shechem. Look at verse one of Joshua 24:

Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel and for their heads and their judges and their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

Now in the ancient near east, it is common when marking a tree or a covenant to give a brief historical summary of the relationship of the parties involved to God. And so he does that. Verses 2 to 4 he talks about the patriarchs. In verses 5 to 7, he talks about the Exodus. In verses 8 to 11, he talks about the conquest. So he talks about all these things and in doing that, he uses I, meaning referring to God, the pronoun I 17 times. I did this. I did this. I did this. I did this. I did this. In fact, look at verse 11 through verse number 13 of Joshua 24. It says there,

You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho; and the citizens of Jericho fought against you, and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Girgashite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. Thus I gave them into your hand. Then I sent the hornet before you and it drove out the two kings of the Amorites from before you, but not by your sword or your bow. I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you had not built, and you have lived in them; you are eating of vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.

God did everything for them, everything. So the point is the victories were God’s alone and not military power or by anything that the people could do in their own power. So, that brings a response from the people because God was faithful. What about you? Are you going to be faithful? Are you going to keep remembering? Are you going to have more memorials of reminders that are there in your life so you don’t forget?

So the last thing is that it’s really our response to God’s faithfulness. That’s the visual reminders before our minds point to that God is worth committing ourselves to. He’s worth committing ourselves to. And so Joshua asked the people to commit yourself to the Lord. That means a choice on the side of the people. You have to make a choice. You have to make a choice. Look at verse 14. It says,

Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

So three things that are manifested in one’s life when they are choosing to be faithful to the Lord. They’re going to be devoted totally to God in worship. They’re not going to have other things on this side. They’re not going to have other loves beside the Lord. Then also in verse number 14, they’re going to put away the worthless idols, the gods. It says,

put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

And then of course, here’s the choice – choose whom you will serve. Look at verse number 15,

If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

There’s that famous passage of Scripture. That famous passage of Scripture can be very helpful to us. We can put something like that on our door, and it could remind us of God’s faithfulness. But it also should remind us of our response to God’s faithfulness, that I chose on a certain day to serve God wholeheartedly. I came to Christ, I believed in Christ and I know that the Lord has done all the work for that to happen. From that day, I began to put away my sin. I have began to put away my idols. I began to put away everything that would hinder me in serving the Lord. And I make a conscious choice every day to serve the Lord.

The goodness, the presence, the loyalty of the Lord was unquestionably evident among God’s people as he is today. So the Lord expected faithfulness from His people in the form of wholehearted allegiance without any form of idolatry. Can’t have Jesus and add-ons. It’s got to be Jesus alone. And you know it reminds us also that there’s no in between. Either you serve God or you serve something else. There’s no in between. There’s no neutral place. So you are either going to serve God or going to serve someone else. So the question is in Joshua 24, who are you going to serve? Because you have to serve someone. In verse 15, the leadership says we’re going to serve the Lord. In verses 16 through 18, the people respond, we will serve the Lord for He’s our God.

But I want you to notice something in our passage. In verse number 20, look at what Joshua says. He says,

If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you after He has done good to you.

He also said to them in verse number 19,

Then Joshua said to the people, “You will not be able to serve the Lord,

You’re not able to do this. Why aren’t you able to do it? Because God is holy. Verse number 19,

He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.

And why is that? If, that big word if,

If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you after He has done good to you.

In other words, we need the Lord’s help. We cannot live the Christian life without the Lord’s help. The Lord has been faithful and he will remain so. Will you be faithful? A stone of witness is one that gives regard to the faithfulness of the Lord. I want you to notice in verse 22,

Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen for yourselves the Lord, to serve Him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” Now therefore, put away the foreign gods which are in your midst, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel. The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and we will obey His voice.

So then what is Joshua do? Look what he does in verse 25,

So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be for a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us; thus it shall be for a witness against you, so that you do not deny your God.” Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to his inheritance.

Now this is not a stone of remembrance. This is not a memorial stone here. This is the stone of witness, that when a person commits themself to Lord, will they be faithful to that commitment? And that commitment is the rest of your life. The rest of your life until the day you die, to the day you die.

Now here’s the sad events though. If you notice in verse 31 of Joshua, 24, it says,

Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, and had known all the deeds of the Lord which He had done for Israel.

Joshua died. The whole generation died. And what’s the outcome? Look at Judges 2:11,

Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals, and they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the Lord to anger. So they forsook the Lord and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

and then Judges 6:10 it says this,

and I said to you, “I am the Lord your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live. But you have not obeyed Me.

So could the people keep their faithfulness? No, they couldn’t. Of course we have a different day here. We have the Spirit of God. We have the word of God, right? It’s different than them in that sense and the Lord. But it’s also our responsibilities to have memorial events in our life that we can point ourself to to remind us of what God has done so we don’t forget that and then pass those things down to our kids.

So men this morning, when you leave today, we have a visual reminder, a reminder really of God’s faithfulness but also specifically of your commitment to Him. And every time you see this little plaque it should remind you who you need to serve. So men, I want you to take one of these. It says, as for me and as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. I put this on my door when I first came here and it’s been there. It’s been there the whole time. And every time I see it, it reminds me of this passage and of my own commitment to the Lord. I think I have it in other places in the house too. I need a lot of reminders. So do you. So just take it and just put it somewhere that you see it all the time. Maybe your front door. Maybe the door that you come in your house, maybe on the wall right there. And maybe you want to take a memorial event, write it down, put it in a plaque right there by the door, so when people come to your house and say, what’s this, and you can tell them of God’s faithfulness.

Let’s pray this morning. Lord, thank You so much. Lord, You’ve been kind to us. You’ve been gracious to us. Lord, You have given us memorial events, one of them was the day we trusted You as Lord and Savior. And Lord, other times where we fell off the wagon and got involved with things we shouldn’t and we had to repent of our sins and we had to come and rethink and repent and give our life back to You, Lord. And I pray, Lord, that we would continue that, that we would be faithful people. Whatever we’re doing, wherever we’re at, we would be faithful to You, no matter what happens. And the reason for that, Lord, is because it is worth serving You. It is worth serving our God who’s taken care of everything for us. The very things that can separate us from God, You’ve taken care of for us by sending Your Son Jesus to die in the place of sinners, to take the judgment that was due us, to pay the full price that was supposed to be ours, and to then turn away His wrath, shed His blood to wash away our sins, and then to defeat satan and death and rise from the grave and now You’re ascended into heaven, interceding for us, preparing a place for us to come to be with You someday. And Lord, I pray as we think of those things, we would not forget that through our lives there are events that we prayed about it and only You could answer and You answered them. I pray, Lord, that You would always bring those things to our memory. Even if we don’t have something visual in our mind, it would spark something in our mind that we would not forget and that we’d constantly recommit ourselves to being faithful to You. Don’t let us get distracted by the things of this world, but let us keep our focus upon You. And Lord, make us faithful. And I pray this in Christ name. Amen.

    Israel Receives a Land

Answers Bible Curriculum 2nd Edition Unit 7 Lesson 68

In this lesson, we see how Joshua finishes the work of conquest given to him by God, assigns the tribes of Israel their land allotments, and exhorts the people to continue to follow Yahweh and be blessed. How much of the land remained to be conquered after Joshua’s death? Had God really kept all his promises to Israel? And what lessons can we learn about trusting and obeying God in the tasks we face?

Our main texts for this lesson are Joshua 11:1-23 and 23:1-16.

but now we can actually begin since it is 9:30 on the East Coast officially let me say good morning and welcome to Sunday school we are pressing on during this very very interesting time a difficult time a challenging time a time of testing from the Lord but it is a actually a good time a good time for his people because God is always good to his people even through the difficulties and praise the Lord that we have this ability to continue a kind of fellowship and to continue the Ministry of the word via the technology that we have if you haven’t said good morning in the chat yet please do so just so I know that you’re here and that you’re listening I really appreciate that and let’s get let’s get into our study we are continuing in the book of Joshua and actually finishing in the book of Joshua today a lesson is entitled Israel receives a land as we’ve been moving through the Book of Joshua we’ve been seeing God fulfilling his promises to Abraham to give Abraham’s seed a land and not just any land the land of Canaan the one specifically prepared by God for his people and this was be accomplished by means of conquest this land would be received by means of conquest more specifically God was bringing about victory for Israel and defeat and judgment for the wicked peoples of the land and last time we saw just how important it was for the people of Israel to remain faithful to God if they wanted to keep experiencing victory and blessing we saw what happened with akin when he took something underneath the ban and then when Israel dealt with that curse among the people how Israel was then brought back to just staggering victory by God now today we’re actually looking at the completion of the conquest Oh somewhat some ones that maybe having a little difficulty seeing me hopefully all of your connections are good and hopefully you’re all you’re all seeing my audio and video just fine seems to be fine on my end so if you’re having an issues hopefully hopefully there are some things you can do when you’re in but as I said today we’re we’re looking at the completion of the conquer and the assigning of the tribes to their various land allotments and Joshua’s final exhortation to the people so a lot of sections to cover here basically looking at the second half of Joshua and as we go along some questions that we want to consider are did Joshua really bring the conquest to an end did God in fact bring to pass the promises that he had given to Abraham when it came to the land and how should God’s faithfulness to Israel and Israel’s faithfulness to God and the blessing they experienced for it how should that inform and teach us how we should live today because these words they were not meant for simply Israel way back when but they are also meant for us this is God’s holy inspired Word well let’s consider those questions and we want to answer them today let’s pray as we get into our text pray with me family father we thank you that you are in firm control and that you are always good lord you are unchanging and that’s so wonderful because if you had changed well then something would be deficient in your character you would be improving or you’d be getting worse that’s impossible for you because you were the perfect God and who have acted perfectly in biblical history and you’ve given us this perfect word and you are even acting perfectly today even with the coronavirus and all the other things going on lord I pray that you’d help me to explain this word well and accurately and helpfully and help the people to take it to heart listen be encouraged be sobered being convicted Holy Spirit please work among those who listen now in Jesus name Amen well go ahead and take your Bibles and open to Joshua chapter 11 Joshua chapter 11 is where we’re starting today we left off last time with Joshua 10 and that momentous and miraculous day and Joshua’s campaign starting his campaign in the south remember the five kings gathered against the people of Gibeon who had made a treaty with Israel Israel came to their aid after that victory in the latter part of chapter 10 which we didn’t go over last time but just it’s important background Joshua takes Israel on a campaign in southern Canaan besieging various important cities capturing them and destroying the people there he subdues the area destroys and drives out the inhabitants and that leads us right into our new passage today Joshua 11 verses 1 to 23 so follow along with me as I read that entire chapter we’re gonna do some analysis this passage Joshua 11 verses 1 to 23 here’s what God’s Word says and it came about when jabbin king of hot sort heard of it that he sent to jobab king of maidan into the king of shimron to the king of akshatha and to the king of the north in the hill country and in the arabic south of chinna Rothen in the lowland and on the heights of d’Or in the West it’s the Canaanite on the east and on the west and the amorite and the hittite and the perizzite in the Jebusite in the hill country and he fight at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah they came out they and all their armies with them has many people as the sand that is on the seashore with very many horses and chariots so all these Kings having agreed to meet came and encamped together at the waters of Mirim to fight against Israel then the Lord that is Yahweh the Covenant name there said to Joshua do not be afraid because of them for tomorrow at this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel you shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire so Joshua and all the people of war with him came upon them suddenly by the waters of Mirim and attacked them he always em into the hand of Israel so that they defeated them and pursued them as far as great Sidon and mr. faught mane and the valley of Misbah to the east and they struck them until no survivor was left to them Joshua did to them as Yahweh had told him he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire then Joshua turned back at that time and captured hot sore and struck its king with the sword for hot sir formerly was the head of all these kingdoms they struck every person who was in it with the edge of the sword utterly destroying them just as Moses the Oh skipped ahead there there was no one left who breathed and he burned Hut’s were with fire Joshua captured all the cities of these kings and all their kings and he struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed them just as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded whoever Israel did not burn any cities that stood on their mounds except hot sore alone which Joshua burned all the spoil of these cities in the cattle the sons of Israel took as their plunder but they struck every man with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them they left no one who breathed just as Yahweh had commanded Moses his servant so Moses commanded Joshua and so Joshua did he left nothing undone of all that Yahweh had commanded Moses thus Joshua took all that land the hill country and all the Negev all that land of goshen the lowland they are above the hill country of Israel and it’s lowland from Mount a lock that rises towards there even as far as Bale God in the valley of Lebanon at the foot of Mount Hermon and he captured all their kings and struck them down and put them to death Joshua waged war a long time with all these kings there was not a city which made peace with the sons but the sons of Israel except the Hittites living in Gibeon they took them all in battle for it was of Yahweh to harden their hearts to meet Israel in battle order that he might uh Turley destroy them but they might receive no mercy but that he might destroy them just as Yahweh had commanded Moses then Joshua came at that time and caught off the Anakim from the hill country from Hebron from deburr from a map and from all the hill country of Judah and from all the hill country of Israel Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities there were no Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel only in Gaza in Gath and in Ashdod some remained so Joshua took the whole land according to all that Yahweh had spoken to Moses and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes thus the land had rest from war thank you for going to that passage with me let’s use our inductive Bible study method start our study of this passage to adjust basic observations on what we read notice that we have first of all a new leader opposing Israel in chapter 10 it was Adani Zedeck who was king of Canaanite jerusalem who gathered a coalition of kings in southern canaan to attack Gibeon and attack israel but now in verses 1 to 5 we see that king jamming of hot sore is leading a northern coalition of kings against Israel and against Israel’s God and a hot sore is worth getting a little bit of background about hot sore haze or you can pronounce it whatever whatever way hotter was another important fortified city this time in northern Canaan north of the Sea of Galilee you can see it on the map here on the screen north of the Sea of Galilee on the edge of the well watered Hula Valley it’s at right on top of a major trade route the International coastal highway with the via Maurice not only controlled the surrounding Valley but it also prevented access to Canaan B in the Northeast so kind of like Jericho it’s a gateway into Canaan now hot saw is probably one of the largest if not the largest city in ancient Palestine as many as forty thousand people lived inside the walls and it wasn’t count the people who would have gone into the city during times of war or at times of danger so we can understand why verse 10 says of hot sore that it was formerly the head of all these kingdoms all the kingdoms that are joining with hot so to oppose is your hot sore is the largest and the greatest but notice why Javon puts together this coalition in verse one of our chapter it says that he heard something what was it that he heard we heard about Israel’s devastating campaign in southern Canaan he’s looking at his fellow kings and his fellow kingdoms in the north and saying we better band together we’ve got to work together if we’re gonna overcome these Israelites these Israelite invaders we need to defeat them and so they work hard to put together an opposing army and notice what we hear about this army in verse four it says that there were as many people as the sand that is on the seashore how much sand is on the seashore that’s an uncountable number so this is a huge horde of people that is gathering against Israel and notice it also says that they had with them very many horses and chariots now this is the first time we see chariots in the conquest narrative the last time we saw chariots it was with pharaoh with what took place at the Red Sea or the reed sea and remember what people thought about chariots at this time they were deadly war machines they struck terror into the hearts of those who faced him they could demoralize entire armies and Israel’s now facing chariots along with this large number of opposing soldiers and horses it says horses were also considered very dangerous horses and horsemen due to their speed their power and maneuverability so Israel is facing an extremely dangerous enemy they are large in number and they are well-armed according to verses one to five yet God had already told Israel what to do in this kind of situation he don’t need to turn there but Deuteronomy chapter 20 verse 1 says when you go out to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you which is exactly what his rule is facing do not be afraid of them for Yahweh your God who brought you up from the land of Egypt is with you we see the same kind of assurance given right after the description of the army in verse 6 yahwah specifically assures joshua yahweh will bring victory even against this vast and well-equipped horde away even commands joshua to hamstring the horses and burn the chariots after the battle now what does it mean to hamstring a horse it’s a little bit of a difference of opinion here it depends on the muscle group involved something that hamstringing is to cut the hamstring group of muscles in a horse’s legs and if you do that to a horse with that muscle group inoperable well the horse can’t walk and basically that horse is going to die it’s possible that God was commanding this destroy the horses I think it’s more likely though that God means something else because the Hebrew word translated hamstring it doesn’t refer to the specific muscle or tendon that would be cut probably these animals are going to be going to be maimed for lack of a better word in such a way that they will continue to live but they’ll be unable to be used in war apparently there was a way that one can do that many ways job God commands Joshua deal with the horses and deal with the chariots so they cannot be used in war anymore notice how visual comes upon their enemies in verses 7 to 8 says they come upon them suddenly and what happens they defeat them and they pursue them until no survivors left them they pursue them to various cities all over northern Canaan you can see that on the map and then in verse 9 we see Joshua obeys God’s commands regarding the horses and chariots and then notice the aftermath of the battle in verses 10 to 15 it says Israel captures all of the cities of the kings that face them they take the plunder and they put to death all the people as God commanded through Moses and remember that was part of God’s command as part of their as part of God’s judgment on the wicked people of the land as part of God’s safeguarding Israel from learning the idolatrous and wicked practices of the people of the land he says you must put them to death don’t leave them alive or else they will become a snare to you this was a unique judgment being pursued by God against the people of the land via Israel but Israel destroys the people of these cities captures their plunder and notice something unique that Israel does with hot sore it says that they burn the city with fire now let’s see if you can answer the following question in the chat if you’ve been paying attention over the last few lessons which to other cities in the conquest according to the book of Joshua are also burned with fire like hot sore Steve you can answer that question if you can’t that’s okay so actually the very first city they conquered Jericho was burned with fire also I the city that had once defeated Israel in battle that that Kingdom I was also burned and then finally hot sore so in total according to the book of Joshua three cities in the conquest were burned to the ground and their sin verses 16 to 20 we get a summary of the conquest of all the different regions in Canaan that had been conquered up to this point and in verse 18 were told specifically that Joshua wages war a long time with the kings of these areas now this is an important statement because otherwise we might get the wrong impression that you can move pretty quickly through the chapters of Joshua and you might get the impression that everything took place in maybe a year but actually it took longer than that we we get an important time detail regarding the conquest in Joshua 14 Joshua 14 verses 6 to 12 I won’t read through that passage with you but Caleb makes a certain comment and he says that he was 40 years old when he spied out the land but he was 85 when he undertook to reconquer Hebron from Anakin at the end of Joshua’s campaigns now if we do a little math here Israel wandered 38 years in the wilderness he spent two years getting to and staying at Sinai and then there were 38 years in the wilderness after Israel spied out the land so we can figure out from these details just how long the conquest was if Caleb was 85 minus 40 years from what his age at when he spied out the land and then minus the 38 years of window wilderness wandering and how many years do you have left over about seven years so this conquest of Canaan probably took about seven years beginning likely around 1406 BC and coming to an event and coming to an end around 1398 BC so this did take a while now notice in verse 20 of Joshua chapter 11 the explanation as to why no one aside from the Gibeonites sought to make peace with the people of Israel it was actually because of Yahweh Yahweh hardened the heart to the canaanites so that they might be destroyed in battle against Israel this was part of the judgment of God for the people’s sins I’ll notice verses 21 to 22 we get a little report about Joshua’s effort against the Anakin now who were the Anakin or the sons of anak as an alternate description we actually can go back to numbers 13 verse 33 to find out who they are remember when the spies were first going through Canaan they said oh we spotted the Nephilim there and they were referring to the sons of anak and this is their description based on encountering the an Hakeem they said we became like grasshoppers in our own sight and so we were in their sight so who are the Anakin well they’re apparently a clan a group of very large people even Giants so they would be very feared you wouldn’t want to face a giant in battle but look what we see here at the end of our chapter Joshua goes after the an Akeem and essentially annihilates their presence in the hill country or the central region of Judah and Israel and driving most of the Anakim to the coast that’s where those cities are that I mentioned notice one of the places that the Anakim settle is in the city of Gath and if you know a little bit more about the Old Testament do we see a significantly tall person later in scripture who comes from Gath who perhaps was a descendant of man Hakeem and of course thinking of Goliath from Gath we hear that he’s from Gath in 1st Samuel 17 for finally notice in verse 23 we read Joshua took the whole land according to all that Yahweh had spoken to Moses so there it is a declaration that the whole land has been taken the conquest is complete and that’s the final statement and chapter 11 makes good stent good sense thus the land had a rest from war so here it is finally Israel has its land God’s promises fulfilled time to rest and relax and enjoy right but notice something take your Bibles and turn to Joshua chapter 13 Joshua 13 verses one two six I’m not gonna go over Joshua twelve Joshua twelve is a rehearsal of the different Kings that Israel defeated and destroyed via their conquest but look with Joshua thirteen verses one to success it says now Joshua was old in advanced in years when Yahweh said to him you are old in advance in years and very much of the land remains to be possessed hmm this is the land that remains all the regions of the Philistines and all those of the guess your rights from this shy which is east of Egypt even as far as the border of Ekron to the north it just counted as Canaanite the five Lords of the Philistines the Gaza at the Ash tonight the ashkelon tonight the get tied to eccrine I and the a fight to the south all the land at the Canaanite and they are that belongs at the sidonians as far as afec to the board of the Amorite in the land of the Gebo light and all of lebanon toward the east from bale gad below Mount Hermon as far as labo Hamas all the inhabitants the hill country from Lebanon as far as Miller v Maine all the sidonians I will dry them out from before the sons of Israel only allotted to Israel foreign inheritance as I’ve commanded you now this is really interesting because you might be asking yourself wait a second is the conquest done or not in verse 1 of chapter 13 God says much of the land remains to be possessed in verses 2 to 6 they describe the regions where the enemies remain basically and I put up a map to show this basically it’s the regions of the coastal plains it’s the valleys you can see this on the right map here so here another Valley over here and it’s the northern section that in the northern section of Lebanon we can compare this to the description of the territory that got a lots to Israel according to numbers 34 verses 1 to 12 that’s the map here I have on the left now there are slightly different interpretations of the exact borders of that description but numbers 34 1 to 12 definitely includes a larger area that blue area here in the map then what Israel has conquered up to this point so there’s been a discrepancy between this declaration that Joshua has taken the whole land and God’s declaration that much territory still needs to be taken in conquest actually though this wouldn’t have been a surprise to Joshua God actually told the people of Israel before Israel entered the land that the conquest would not happen all at once actually Exodus 23 Exodus 23 verses 29 to 30 right after God proclaims to the people that he will drive out the people of the land of Canaan before Israel he says this God says I will not drive them out before you in a single year that the land may not become desolate and the beasts of the field become too numerous for you I will drive them out before you little by little until you become fruitful and take possession of the land and this is also very significant notice the reason why God says that you will not drive out and destroy the people of Canaan all at once it’s because Israel will not be big enough and not be populous enough to settle in all the empty land actually something that we see in the book of Joshua and even in the beginning of Judges is that sometimes Israel has to go back and re conquer areas that they already conquer undeterred that they already conquered under Joshua because their enemies had moved back into the area this shows that Israel did not have enough people and enough resources to sufficiently settle in and fortify all of the cities that they conquered even under Joshua so you can see why it wouldn’t be wouldn’t be probable profitable for them to try and conquer all of the territory at once they just couldn’t they couldn’t live in at all they needed to settle grow as a people and then they would continue the conquest so we see these is to what may be seemed like contradictory declarations and the end of Joshua 11 were told the whole land is conquered and then in Joshua 13 were told no there’s more to go now what are we to do with these different details well that’s why we go next to the interpretation step we start with just basic observations of the details of the passage and then we take those details together once we’ve observed what we can and we ask questions of interpretation so I’m going to do that with you now so here’s the question in terms of the battles and sieges in which Israel has participated up to this point how does the battle with the northern Kings compare perhaps as you think about this you notice that on the one hand this is different than anything Israel has faced this is the most challenging battle yet a vast amount of enemy soldiers uncountable amount and they have advanced technology they have the horses and the chariots Israel has not faced an enemy quite like this before it was getting harder and harder and harder they faced a coalition of kings in the south but nothing like the northern Kings so this was different this was a new challenge and yet it was no different from what Israel had experienced before because the victory was just as easy through God God was the one who said I will give you the victory that’s exactly what it did here didn’t matter how many enemies Israel was facing didn’t matter whether they had chariots or horsemen God still swore that he would give the victory and he did so the people of Israel trusted God and they experienced the victory so in some ways this was the most difficult challenge in other ways it was just like what is you had experience already now here’s another question the gathering of this large number of kings and the armies and represented the the greatest test Israel has experienced in the conquest thus far but why was this large attacking horde of northern kings and their armies why is it actually a blessing for Israel in the end I don’t know if you thought about it but this really is a good thing for Israel now why do I say that on the one hand Israel gets to see God’s mighty power put on display if the battle were not so great if the challenge were not so daunting then they wouldn’t have gotten to rebel as much and just how faithful and powerful God is on behalf of his people this was a titanic army that was facing them and yet they got to see God bring the deliverance so that was the blessing but also just in practical terms this gathering of the northern coalition against Israel it was because Ezreal got to deal with their enemies all at once let’s face it Joshua is taking a number of years to conquer these various cities deal with these various kingdoms but because all of the northern Kings are the majority of the great ones gather against Israel Israel can deal with them all at once they decisively defeat the army in battle this army gathered against him and then they can go and besiege the various cities that these armies came from no longer are the armies holed up in the cities to be able to defend them so Israel has a somewhat easier time taking care of the cities in the north so what seemed like a great challenge it may be a great test it was actually for Israel’s blessing in the end made things easier for Israel now here’s a question I’d like you to answer in the chat if you can why did Yahweh command for Joshua and Israel to demilitarize the horses and destroy the chariots after the battle with the northern Kings what do you think she might think these advanced technologies these horses the chariots that’d be a great thing for Israel to to take on as their own resource but why did God say destroy them actually make them so that you can’t use them in war yeah mark posts horses were a symbol of man’s strength and Greg mentions trust this is about trust and Yahweh I bear rights you did not want them to trust in horses and chariots and Leila says they needed to rely on God’s power and you’re right this is this is all what it’s about we even see the same idea reflected in the Psalms right that we don’t put our trust in horses or chariots with the strength of men God’s people are called to put their trust in Yahweh himself and so God is really trying to protect Israel by saying I don’t want you to be swayed by these new war machines and technology that you might receive the victory comes through me it doesn’t come via these these specific technologies and implements so actually show your faith in me by just laying aside those technologies I will bring you the victory and so that’s why we see God’s sake just get rid of those chariots and this is this is right along the lines of a command given by God in the Torah when it comes to the kings of Israel later Kings Vidor not to multiply horses for themselves and along with that chariots why so they would not learn to trust in their own strength rather than trusting in Yahweh now God could have brought victory to Israel even if they had horses and chariots but he said I want you to I want you to be able to just see very clearly that I’m the one bringing the victory you don’t need these advanced machines and technologies and mark notes at Psalm 33 I think is maybe the this home that I was thinking of so good thank you for answering that question now here’s another question and again see if you can answer this in the chat why does Israel burn hot sore why does usual burn hot sore they don’t burn all the cities they burned a few of them at hot stores one of them so why hot sword give you a moment to answer three dimensions also a psalm 20 verse 7 in relation to the previous question thanks Judy now mark notes the huts were represented the the biggest enemy that Israel faced this would have been considered the greatest if not of the greatest if not the greatest city in Palestine and what did the people of Israel do they burn it to the ground it was the head of all the kingdoms of the passage noted and as as dawn brought back to our attention so by destroying it by burning it this was another testimony to the people peoples around Israel and to Israel itself that the Lord is mighty he is able to destroy any enemy even the greatest kingdom and I think about really all the cities that Israel burns it was all a kind of memorial an ongoing testimony Jericho the first city I the city that had defeated Israel and hot sore this greatest city of the north each one of them is left in ruins as an eternal testimony to God’s power to bring victory and God’s powerful judgment on those who resist him and those who continue in sin and I think as Liz mentioned this is partly true to prevent the enemy from returning into the area occupying those cities and representing a continual thorn in Israel’s side it’s interesting actually hot sort will have to be recall Kurd we see that we see that in the book of Judges so this is one of the cities because of a strategic location it will be refortified by some visuals enemies and I’ll have to be conquered again but Josh was destruction of the city Israel’s destruction of the city was a powerful testimony to the people of the land now Israel as I said did not do this with all the cities and why not why didn’t why not just make all this city as a memorial by burning them as a testimony to the people the land as a testimony to the Israelites there’s a very practical reason for that and it’s that israel needs a place to live I understand that in the conquest God is not just giving the people of Israel a land they are actually also receiving a land fully furnished they are an cities and farms and vineyards and houses and animals many other treasures God was doing this for the people of Israel as a gift and as a grace and he even reminds him the Torah think about what I’m giving you and don’t forget this grace that’s being shown to you because if you do and if you turn away from me and if you disobey the terms of my covenant well then you will experience what judgment I put on the people of the land the things that you make the houses that you build others will inhabit them the crops that you bring in others will eat them and ultimately I’ll remove you from the land and put other people here so though this was a great gift edge oh it was one that they were not to take for granted lest they experience the removal of these things that they had received by the way this fact that most of the cities the conquests were not destroyed or burned but actually taken intact by the people of Israel and actually accords with what we’ve found so far archaeologically and then there’s no evidence of a wide-scale campaign of destruction in the 1400s BC in Canaan except at a few sites like the ruins of Jericho and the ruins of hot sore now people who don’t know the Bible they think that this is proof that the Bible is not true you see oh we don’t see this big this devastating conquest all these burn layers in the in the lands of Canaan and the cities of Canaan at this time so the Bible must not be true actually if you pay attention to what the Bible actually says what we have found accords with what the Bible says there shouldn’t have been much of a disruption in the archaeological archaeological layers of the city except in a very few sites because God was in fact giving these cities intact to the people of Israel now let’s get to one of our bigger questions certainly the Bible is not contradicting itself when it says in Joshua 11 that the whole land was conquered and in Joshua 13 that much remained to be conquered the Bible is God’s perfect word and as Jesus says scripture cannot be broken so in what sense this Joshua 11 true that Joshua in Israel conquered the whole land and thus God’s promised to give the land to Israel was fulfilled and what sense is that true see if you can answer that in the chat what sense is chapter 11 true and not really in contradiction to Joshua 13 certainly there must be an answer to this question and what sense did Joshua and Israel conquer the whole land I think we can answer all right mark mark notes the promise was given and the people were in fear very notes they had dominion over it but not possession Jeremiah and perhaps that Shaji or Jeremiah God has given them the land that they live in that’s true I think essentially we cannot these answers I think are all right all correct the land was essentially conquered that had essentially received it because all the genuine military threats to Israel have been dealt with Israel has broken the back of the resistance in Canaan all that’s really left is mop up operations to be pursued not by Israel as a whole but the individual tribes Canaan was essentially conquered Israel had essentially received the land thus God’s Word was fulfilled he said he would give them the land they have received it and even with the territory they’ve taken up to this point it is enough for all the people of Israel to live in Israel as I said before it would not be ready at that moment to take on new territory the land would need to have rest for a while which is why the end of Joshua 11 says but it does the land had rest from war but as usual would grow as the tribes continued to trust in God and to seek God’s will they would successfully dislodge the remaining inhabitants and obtain the rest of their inheritance so God’s ancient word to Abraham is indeed being fulfilled here at just as you said Abraham for instance in Genesis 12:7 God said Abraham to your descendants I will give this land and Genesis 15:18 God says to Abraham to your descendants I have given this land from the river of Egypt as far as the great river the river Euphrates referring the river of Egypt there not the Nile but probably the brook of Egypt the wadi lrish in the Sinai Peninsula and the river Euphrates there’s an armour the Euphrates River that kind of descends into Lebanon and that was really comprised the to the two ends of Israel’s assigned inheritance according to numbers 34 so Israel had essentially received God’s promise and it was only a matter of time and their own obedient that they would receive the full amount of land portions to them by God so consider the conquest narrative up to this point and particularly what we have in joshua 11 what did this account show us or emphasized to us about god many of the same things that we’ve seen in the previous lessons god is mighty to save on behalf of his people but also my to destroy those who appoint oppose him god is good to his own god is sovereign he’s in control of all the kings all the kingdoms and the land he is holy and wrathful against sin she did in the judgment being precipitated by the people of israel on the people the land and even on israel when they are not willing to follow god see that God is just he gives it gives the inhabits of the land what they deserve according to their sin but he’s also faithful and just on behalf of his people faithful to his word to Abraham and to the promises given through Moses and through Joshua to the people and we see that God is unchanging it’s not like he made a promise to Abraham and to Josh already set up sorry changed my mind or yeah I really wanted to do that for you but I’m just not able like I thought I was now God is unchanging and thus faithful and of course all these qualities qualities that we’re seeing on display in God they ought to be an encouragement to us even us in our own situation with the coronavirus and the tasks set before us because the same God but the people of Israel and Joshua if you are in Christ he is your God too he is our God usual was tested in battle against large armies we are tested by the spiritual warfare that we now undertake and the testing of sickness and stay-at-home directives and other uncomfortable circumstances misses a testing from God to us but the same God who is sovereign over that time and Israel’s conquest he is sovereign over us and justice he worked for their good he’s working for our good so we can learn from Israel’s experience with God God can be trusted to take care of his people and bring to pass to them what he promised he calls on his people to simply look to him in faith and obedience I will say more about this later in terms of application you can see there’s already great application and what we’ve examined thus far but let’s move on in the book of Joshua in Joshua 13 at 21 we begin a long section of the book where Joshua signs by lot that is by casting Lots not exactly dice but something like that casting Lots to portion to the nine and a half tribes who have not yet been settled their tribal inheritances now there’s very specific descriptions about the inheritance is given to each tribe we’re not going to look at those specifically I’m just going to summarize it via a map but again this is in Joshua 13 to 21 so you can look at that later you see here on the map three of the tribes already received their portion on the eastern side of the Jordan we have Reuben GAD and half tribe of Manasseh on the western side of the Jordan the first inheritance is inheritance is given unto the major tribes Judah in the south and then the sons of Joseph Ephraim and Manasseh in the north they essentially are given the heartland of Canaan the hill country and also some of the coastal area and we have a number of minor tribal inheritances assigned in between and around those allotments we’ve got Dan and Benjamin kind of squeezed in between Judah and the sons of Joseph and then we have also Simeon is in the middle of Judah’s inheritance right in the midst of it and then the four other tribes Asher Zebulun istikhara Naphtali in the north on the western side of Galilee notice one tribe is not mentioned here in the tribal allotment and that’s Levi they didn’t get any specific territory that’s because God was doing something special with him they were given cities to throughout the people of Israel and God was going to provide for the people of Levi via the offerings and contributions that the people of Israel make to Yahweh God was going for treat the Levites has his own special possession and they received the offerings of Israel and as they live throughout the land of Israel they were really to serve as teachers in Israel they were to be teachers of the covenant to the rest of the tribes and people could go to the Levi towns to to consult and to learn so we have all the tribes of Israel now given a portion decided by law according to God’s providence according to what he knows what would be best for each tribe the lot falls to them according to that purpose of God but do note from this map that you see before you that a fair amount of the assigned territory is not yet in Israelite hands there’s still people of the land living in many of these territories each tribe then would be responsible to conquer the assigned a territory as that tribe grew and as they trusted in God of course that’s and that’s actually what Joshua exhorts the people to do at the end of the book of Joshua so let’s actually head there take your Bible and move over to Joshua chapter 23 Joshua 22 we won’t go over that good it talks about him it’s a misunderstanding that takes place between the tribes on the east side of the Jordan and the tribes in the west side of the Jordan which they’re able to resolve without bloodshed but in Joshua 23 and 24 we get a description of certain final assemblies that Joshua convenes for all Israel and in these assemblies well actually let’s read it together flat I may comment on it look at Joshua 23 verses 1 to 16 these last portions we don’t have time to comment in full but I want us to notice a few things especially from Joshua 23 look at Joshua 23 as I read it it says now came about after many days when Yahweh had given rest Israel from all their enemies on every side and Joshua was old advanced in years the Joshua called for all Israel for their elders and their heads in the judges and their officers and said to them I am old advanced in years and you’ve seen all that Yahweh your God has done to all these nations because of you for Yahweh your God is he who has been fighting for you see I’ve apportioned to you these nations which remain as an inheritance for your tribes with all the nations which I have cut off from the Jordan even to the Great Sea toward the setting of the Sun Yahweh your God he will thrust them out from before you and drive them from before you and you will possess their land just as Yahweh your God promised you be very firm then to keep and do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses so that you may not turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left so that you will not associate with these nations these which remain among you or mention the name of their gods or make anyone swear by them or serve them or bow down to them but you were to cling to Yahweh your God as you have done to this day for Yahweh has driven out great and strong nations from before you and as for you no man has stood before you to this day one of your men puts the flight a thousand for Yahweh your God is he who fights for you just as he promised you so take diligent heed to yourselves to love Yahweh your God for if you ever go back and cling to the rest of these nations these which remain among you and intermarry with them so that you associate with them and they with you know with certainty that Yahweh your God will not continue to drive these nations out from before you but they will be a snare and a trap to you and a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes until you perish from off this good land which Yahweh your God has given you now behold today I’m going the way of all the earth and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which our God spoke concerning you has failed all have been fulfilled for you not one of them has failed you come about the justice all the good words which our God spoke to you have come upon you so Yahweh will bring upon you all the threats until he has destroyed you from off this good land which Yahweh your God has given you when you transgress the covenant of Yahweh your God which you commanded you and go and serve other gods and bow down to them then the anger of Yahweh will against you and you will perish quickly from off the good land which he has given you notice just some powerful excitations from Joshua here to the people notice a few things with me he calls on the people to continue the conquest in obedience to God’s law as they grow as tribes they are to continue the conquest encourages the people by calling upon them to remember everything that God has done for them thus far and notice the warning he gives in verse 7 he says do not associate with the people of the land or serve their gods and you can see even a little progression in verse 7 don’t mention the name of their gods don’t swear by them and don’t serve them and bow down to them don’t even start by mentioning the name of their God and then in verse 12 Joshua wants people not to intermarry with the people of the land remember this has nothing to do with race this all has all to do with idolatry just as Moses said in the Torah he says do not intermarry with them because if they if you do they will lead you astray from Yahweh and there will be consequences from that Moses foretold the consequences and they’re repeated here in verse 13 it says if you intermarry if you associate with the people of the land and God will no longer give you victory in your battles and these intermarry peoples will become a snare to a painful snare and ultimately you will perish from this good land that you have obtained you’ll you will be destroyed from it you’ll be removed from it and notice the way Joshua underscores this in verses 14 to 16 it reminds the people that just that they’ve seen all good all God’s good covenant promises come to pass to them pass for them up to this point so in the same way they will see God’s covenant curses come upon them in the same faithful way if they forsake your way if they serve sin if they go after idols and if they really look to indulge themselves this is a powerful excitation and Joshua says similar things in the next chapter look at Joshua 24 now this one we won’t read most of it Joshua convenes a covenant renewal ceremony at Shechem Shechem is a city right in the middle of the tribal inheritances on the western side of the Jordan and in this meeting Joshua again rehearse is all the good that Yahweh has done for his people and he calls upon the people to choose once and for all which God are you gonna serve this is where we get that famous statement from Joshua as for me in my house we will serve the Lord how do the people respond to this call for decision from Joshua what they swear to serve Yahweh and to serve him only and Joshua sets up a stone pillar at Shechem as a witness a memorial to the Covenant renewal ceremony that they all undergo a witness even to what Israel has sworn we will serve Yahweh alone and does this do the people of Israel hold good to their promise notice verse 31 in chapter 24 tells us a little bit after what happened after the death of Joshua it says Israel served Yahweh all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua and had known all the deeds of Yahweh which he had done for Israel this generation it took Joshua’s excitation seriously it remembered who Yahweh is and what works he had done and thus they followed Yahweh and they were blessed for it but what about the next generation it’s actually here that we see the purpose of the book of Joshua this book is written as a testimony and a call to the new generations of Israel after the generation of Joshua that they might walk in faithfulness before God that they might see his faithfulness on their behalf in the past to bring blessing and victory when the people proceeded by faith and to bring chastening and judgment when the people chose to serve sinan idols and God through Joshua was calling the next generation to affirm their covenant faithfulness to Yahweh and to obey his word and that meant specifically for them finishing the conquest keeping God’s covenant and not intermarrying with the people of the land they have this testimony from Joshua they have the book of the law given by Moses they have every encouragement and reason to follow Yahweh but what do the generation after Joshua do do they heed the message of this book did they heed the testimony of the past we find out in the book of Judges and the answer is a tragic one what we’re going to see as we proceed into that book is that Israel will betray its covenant commitment and it will forget all the good that God has done for them they will fail to continue the conquest they will intermarry with the ungodly people of the land and thus they will experience God’s faithful covenant chastening but we’ll get to that a little bit later nevertheless we can heed the message of the book of Joshua and we must even now in the 21st century even now in the midst of the coronavirus this book and even they account that we’ve looked at today the accounts would look at the day it is relevant for us so how should we apply it let me give you a few suggestions how should what we’ve studied in Joshua affect us today which it first of all caused us to behold once again the futility of opposing Yahweh the futility of pursuing sin even a giant army with chariots and horses could not stand before Yahweh in Israel it was easy for him to confound this army and bring Israel its victory so then in light of that well any of us today be able to successfully oppose Yahweh well any of us today be able to get away with our sin and consider yourselves personally are you at all in rebellion against God and against God’s Son Jesus Christ whom God has appointed to one day rule the world and utterly destroy all sinners all those who remain enemies of God do you refuse to love and serve Jesus Christ because instead you want to just serve yourself you want to go your own way a way that is according to the Bible futile self seeking and sinful heed the book of Joshua heed the words of Psalm chapter 2 which says why are the nations in an uproar why are they trying to oppose Yahweh they’re not going to succeed the word from Psalm 2 is kiss the Sun now lest he be angry repent now and be saved before the judgment comes and you perish in the way because if you do not knew this Joshua makes quite clear you will not escape the just judgment of God so we should on the one hand behold the futility of opposing Yahweh and pursuing sin but we should also the more positive sense we should learn to rely on the faithfulness of Yahweh Joshua said that not one of God’s promises related to Israel’s conquest failed to come to pass and that’s true and if that was true back then if God was being faithful to his word back then and his word that he has declared since then even to us today will also hold true because God does not change our God today is the same God who promised to do good to his people back then in the days of Joshua he provided perfectly for his people and he will do the same for us yes even amid the coronavirus I mean think of all the times that God proved himself faithful to Abraham Isaac Jacob the sons of Israel Moses Joshua and then think in your own life all the times that God has proven himself faithful to you and to your family if you are in Christ so then rely on your faithful God he can be trusted he will provide for you in the perfect way believe him rest in him don’t be like the proud and double minded men of James chapter one who can never decide whether he can really rely on God or not this doubting of God is really a dishonor to God it’s saying God you can’t be trusted God I you haven’t done enough for me it’s just pride and it’s refusal to believe the word that God is given yes God will bring you even if you are in Christ into difficult times of testing like the one that we are in but he does it for our good as James even says also in James chapter one we can consider it all joy not the trial itself is good in terms of the pain and suffering or discomfort that is with but because of the purpose that is being accomplished through it we are be being made more like Christ our faith is being put on display and shown to be genuine so you can trust God you must trust God and if you do you’ll experience the Lord’s peace and the Lord’s blessing Joshua tells us that we can rely on the faithfulness of Yahweh and then one other suggestion based on this book is that we also should look forward to our coming inheritance Israel received a blessed inheritance from God via Joshua’s conquests but that inheritance was temporary if you know Jesus Christ if you are found in him then you have an even greater inheritance coming along with all the saints not merely fellowship of God in heaven but the new heavens and the new earth ruling and reigning with the son himself in your resurrected body in your glorified body you know I’ve been thinking and maybe you’ve thought about this too doesn’t this situation with the coronavirus make you long more for the world to come no sickness no suffering no pain no uncertainty no fear no sin such a world is coming the Scriptures have made that so clear the Lord Jesus Christ is bringing a kingdom of life and righteousness to the earth but who’s gonna enter that Kingdom only those who are in Christ only those who have repented of their sins and trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and as God and as king they will be granted entry into God’s kingdom so you have to ask yourselves have I done so am I in Christ have I repented of my sin and believed in Christ to be my only righteousness to make me acceptable to God by His perfect life and by His sacrificial death and his powerful resurrection along with that does the prospect of reward in Christ and dwelling with him in the future in his kingdom does that propel you on in faith obedience and servus remember too and this has been an excitation many of Gibbons so I’m not unique about this it’s easy in this crisis to become very self focused and self-indulgent hey I don’t want to get sick I don’t want to see people just sit at home do various things watch TV don’t care about anyone else anymore whether in the church or outside of the church but that’s not our calling as Christians if we’ve received the salvation that we have indeed reported to received then we must walk worthy of it we cannot simply choose to focus on self yes the way we’re going to serve others will change during this time but we have a calling to the film we have brethren to love and we have those outside of God’s sheepfold I need to be brought in especially during this difficult time we need to take seriously the coming of Christ and not settle for being Christian couch potatoes right now there’s important work to be done on behalf of the Lord the gospel must go forth the church must be built up even now think about how you can minister to other members of the church even now even amid stay-at-home hoarders this work needs to be done and who will God use to do it he will use you yes even you if you are in Christ every member of the body of Christ is important and has a role of building up the church to fulfill in light of our coming inheritance and inheritance though is even more blessed than the inheritance we see Joshua helped the Israelites receive let us do this let’s proceed onward in the work of Christ we will receive a reward and we will dwell with the Lord Himself that’s all for the lesson this week if you have questions or comments about what I shared with you today please post them in the chat I’ll interact with you and after after I pray or if you think of other questions or comments later in the week you can email me at Daffy cap OSHA at gmail.com I would love to interact with you answer your questions the best my ability as I alluded to before in Sunday school next time we open up the book of Judges and we see how tragically and unthinkably Israel turns from God to serve idols in spite of all that God has done for them but how does God respond it will be in holiness but it will also be in grace and this is a powerful message again even for our own day so I look forward to talking and studying the book of Judges with you but let me close our official study time with prayer and then like I said I’ll stay on a little bit afterwards to interact with you if you have questions or comments let’s break our great sovereign God and King Lord in light of this wonderful book that we’ve looked at together or do we know that we are to be changed we ought to be transformed we need to see on the one hand that you are mighty to save we are to believe you you will bring us through the trial through the fire through the flood and you will bring us safely into your heavenly kingdom for those of us who are in Christ but Lord the message of this book is also how foolish and how eternally destructive it is to oppose you to serve Self Serve sin serve the passing things of this world because the judgment will come and the sin will be found out but how blessed are of all of those who seek refuge in you because you are a rock that cannot be shaken and Lord we look forward to our coming inheritance but if you provided the inheritance faithfully for the people of Israel you will also provide our inheritance you have as you’ve testified Lord Jesus gone to prepare a place for us and you will receive us to that place and even bring that place to the earth and the new heaven of the new earth and we look forward we look forward to that God we’re thankful for our place in it we did not deserve even in the slightest bit no good work Noah ritual could ever produce that for us only your righteous life and death and resurrection well god I pray that you would be with us amid this coronavirus crisis and load this would be a time of special ministry even increased ministry the Lords of people the world who don’t have the hope and rock of you and Lord hostage to our brothers and sisters Lord we know that when we serve our brothers and sisters we serve you and you are pleased and what we look forward to the reward from that help us in our weakness help us through the trials and difficulties and we know that your grace is sufficient not only to forgive but your transformed Lord bless the people who have listened today even as they continue to listen to other live streaming sermons and other things pray Lord that they would indeed be transformed by your word in Jesus name Amen

    God Gives the Victory

Answers Bible Curriculum 2nd Edition Unit 7 Lesson 67

This week in Sunday school, we continue in the book of Joshua by looking at two significant events during Israel’s conquest of Canaan: the defeat at Ai and the miraculous victory at Gibeon. After an astounding victory at Jericho, why was Israel suddenly defeated at little old Ai? How was it possible that the sun remained longer in the sky than usual during the battle of Gibeon? And what can we learn from these accounts about how seriously God treats sin among his people and about how God is mighty to bring victory? We’ll consider these questions and more!

Our main text for this lesson is Joshua 7:1-10:15.

we’re continuing on in sunday school today we still need the word we still need to be encouraged and to be encouraging one another so let’s get to the word in the book of Joshua we’ve been seeing how God has been fulfilling his promises those promises that were given to Abraham back many years before but we’re seeing how those are being fulfilled in the people of Israel actually obtaining the land of Canaan via the conquest last time we saw Israel make its first conquest in the land of Canaan via Jericho this ancient and mighty city was brought down it found no protection behind its great walls God mer actually brought those walls down and thus in Jericho we see a clear testimony both of God’s ability to bring victory and display his mighty power on behalf of his people but also to take away the security and to judge and destroy those who will not repent of their sin Jericho is the city of wickedness and God judged it and it is an unstoppable judgment and speaking of unstoppable I mentioned you before how Israel since it’s really arrived on the eastern side of the Jordan it has seemed like an unstoppable juggernaut not because Israel itself has a great amount of power but because Yahweh is fighting for Israel Israel is wiping out kingdoms right and left causing all the wicked nations to fear but today we’re going to talk about how that conquest comes to a screeching halt at least for a moment the juggernaut is stopped Israel will be defeated and by a seemingly insignificant opponent then why does this happen and what would be needed for Israel to have victory once again under Yahweh and how will God a reassert dramatically reassert his power on behalf of Israel afterwards that’s what we’re gonna talk about today and as we do so we’re gonna we’re gonna learn more for ourselves how we can continue on under the blessing of Yahweh and not be defeated in the struggles that we face I’m talking about our spiritual struggles let’s pray and then we’ll begin to hear from God’s Word in Joshua let’s pray Heavenly Father we thank you that you are sovereign you will always take care of your people because you promised you even through the trials even through the difficulties but we’re reminded of certain scriptures and the Old Testament where you promise that there would be nothing that would harm your people that you had not ordained you will bring your people through even through fire and you will bring them safely into your heavenly kingdom at your appointed time so Lord we rest in your sovereignty lord I pray that we be encouraged by your word today that you’d help me to explain it well and accurately thanks for these people who have tuned in I pray that you encourage sober and work in their hearts in Jesus name Amen I see a number of other good mornings thank you good to see you all right please open your Bibles to Joshua chapter and Joshua 7 we’re picking up right where we left off last time with the destruction of Jericho but before we read Joshua 7 just take a look back quickly in your Bibles to Joshua chapter 6 Joshua 6 verses 17 and 19 and we’re gonna be we want to recall some special orders given by Joshua to the people of Israel this is right before Jericho’s destruction look at Jericho Jericho Joshua 6 verses 17 to 19 where it says the city shall be under the ban and all it and all that is in it belongs to the Lord that is yahweh covenant name of God only Rahab the harlot and all who are with her in the house shall live because she hid the messengers whom we sent but as for you only keep yourselves from the things under the band so that you do not covet them and take some of the things under the ban and make the camp of Israel accursed and bring trouble on it but all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron are holy to Yahweh they shall go into the Treasury of Yahweh and I notice from these verses in Joshua Joshua 6 what Joshua says will be the effect of someone taking something under the ban that is something that was a curse and devoted to Yahweh that person who transgresses in such a weight will make the camp of Israel accursed and bring trouble on it and this one is gonna explain a lot of what we’re about to see let’s now look at Joshua 7 and read the entire chapter 2 verses 1 to 26 follow along with me it says but the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully in regard to the things under the ban 4 akin the son of Carmen the son of Zabka the son of Zahra from the tribe of Judah took some of the things under the ban there for the anger of Yahweh burned against the sons of Israel now Joshua sent men from Jericho to I which is near Beth even you stood Bethel and said to them and said to them go up and spy out the land so the men went and spied out I they returned to Joshua and said to him do not let all the people go up only about two or three thousand you go up to hide do you not make all the people toil up therefore they are few so about 3,000 men from the people went up there but they fled from the men of I the men of I struck down about 36 of their men and pursued them from the gate as far as Sheva ream and struck them down on the descent so the hearts of the people melted and became as water then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the Ark of Yahweh until the evening both he and the elders of Israel and they put dust on their heads Joshua said alas O Lord Yahweh why did you ever bring this people over the Jordan only to deliver us into the hand of the amorite stew destroy us only we had been willing to dwell beyond the Jordan Oh Lord what can I say since Israel has turned their back before their enemies but the Canaanites then all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and it will surround us and cut off our name from the earth and what will you do for your great name so Yahweh said to Joshua rise up why is it that you have fallen on your face Israel has sinned and they’ve also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them and they have even taken some of the things under the ban and I both stolen and deceived moreover they have also put them among their own things therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies they turn their backs before their enemies where they have become accursed I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from your midst rise up consecrate the people and say consecrate yourselves for tomorrow for thus says Yahweh for thus y’all way the God of Israel has said there are things under the ban in your midst o Israel you cannot stand before your enemies until you have removed the things under the banned from your midst in the morning then you shall come nearby o tribes and it shall be that the tribe which Yahweh takes by lot shall come near by families and the family which Yahweh takes shall come near by households and the household which Yahweh take shall come near man by man shall be that the one who was taken with the things under the ban shall be burned with fire he and all that belongs to him because he has transgressed the covenant of yahweh and because he has committed a disgraceful thing in Israel so Joshua arose early in the morning and brought Israel nearby tribes and the tribe of Judah was taken brought the family of Judah near and he took the family of the Zehra heights and he brought the family of the Zahra heights near man by man and zabdiel was taken brought the household near man by man and akin the son of Carmy the son of zebedee son of Zahra from the tribe of Judah was taken then Joshua said to akin my son I implore you give glory to Yahweh the God of Israel and give praise to him and tell me now what you have done do not hide it from me so we can answer Joshua and said truly I have sinned against Yahweh the God of Israel and this is what I did when I saw among the spoil a beautiful mantle from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight and I coveted them and took them and behold they are concealed in the earth inside my tent with the silver underneath it so Joshua sent messengers and they ran to the tent and behold it was concealed in his tent with the silver underneath it it took them from inside the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the sons of Israel and they poured them out before Yahweh and Joshua and all Israel with him took a kin the son of Zahra the silver the mantle the bar of gold his sons his daughters his oxen his donkeys his sheep his tents and all that belonged to him and they brought them up to the valley of Achor Joshua said why have you troubled us Yahweh will trouble you this day and all Israel stoned them with stones and they burn them with fire after they had stone them with stones they raised over him a great heap of stones that stands to this day and Yahweh turned from the fierceness of his anger therefore the name of that place has been called the valley of Achor to this day all right we’ve now read through the passage following our inductive Bible study method we now want to start our analysis of the passage with just basic observations let’s do that notice verse 1 it says that people of Israel broke faith with Yahweh now a specific man will be identified as the one who did this akin we see that also in verse 1 but notice it says the people of Israel broke faith and they broke pay for the dog way by taking something under the band we already know from Joshua 6 that means what’s going to come upon Israel trouble and we have this city of I notice that what the spies report in verses 2 to 3 of our chapter they look at hi and they say we don’t need to send more than 2 to 3 thousand soldiers to take this city and we might wonder was that a good recommendation was that bad advice is this the trouble of y’all right walk away already being manifest we will learn later on from chapter 8 that I actually has about twelve thousand total inhabitants spies make it sound small and weak and to some extent dis and they give this recommendation to job Joshua Joshua heats the report of these spies in verses 4 and 5 we see that he sends three thousand men against tiny AI but what’s the result of the battle while Israel’s defeated they flee from I and 36 of their own are killed and then notice verse 5 says that the hearts of the people of Israel melted and became like water now that description says should sound familiar to you because where have we heard that phrase lately that was what Israel’s enemies were experiencing when they heard about Israel’s victories their hearts melted and became like water but now the tables have turned Israel is the one who is disheartened so notice how Josh when the elders respond in verses 6 to 9 they mourn they’re tearing their clothes putting dust upon their heads these are signs of mourning and grief there before the Ark of Yahweh expressing their lament and Joshua even complains before God verse 7 he asked why God brought Israel over the Jordan only to be destroyed in verse 8 he admits he has no explanation for what just happened in verse 9 he expresses concern that the surrounding peoples will hear a visuals defeat no longer be afraid of Israel surround Israel attack Israel and destroy Israel and then at the end of verse 9 notice Joshua asks Yahweh how Yahweh will glorify him so what will he do for his own name if he lets Israel his covenant people be destroyed and notice how God responds to Joshua’s prayer in verses 10 to 12 Yahweh plainly identifies the source of Israel’s trouble he says Israel has sinned by taking something from under the ban and he says Israel has become a curse as a result and cannot stand before their enemies in battle but God also gives instruction to Joshua as to what he’s to do about this what Israel’s to do verse 12 he says you must destroy the banned items from among you verse 13 he says explain the situation in Israel tell them to consecrate themselves ceremonially purify themselves in verse 14 he says cast lots I don’t know exactly how that was done probably via the room and the Thummim of the high priest even those things we don’t really understand what they were but they were used for understanding the Lord’s will by lot but God says cast lots and I will cause the offending man to be found out and then verse 15 what is me done with this man he is to be burned along with all that belongs to him Joshua obeys God’s commands and notice as he does so verses 16 to 18 no one in Israel confesses to the sin or reports who it was who took this in it’s only when the lot plainly falls on akin in verse 19 and when Joshua asks akin straight out what akin had done that akin confesses to his sin verse 19 noticed the way Joshua employs a can he says give glory to God give praise to Yahweh how they can gonna do this by confessing his sin telling the truth verse 20 akin does confess his sin which notice he says is against Yahweh being very theologically correct there and then verse 21 he describes the progression of his sin and it’s very descriptive of Austin really he says I saw I coveted I took and I concealed now what is it that akin took well I took some silver took some gold and he took a beautiful robe from the land of Shinar also known as the area of Babylon and these were precious items I’m sure they were beautiful but were they really worth transgressing God’s ban were they worth bringing a curse on himself its family and all Israel verses 22 to 23 notice Joshua has some men confirm Akins story and they retrieved the banned items and then in verse 24 and what follows Israel carries out all israel carries out the necessary punishment for Akins troubling Israel all of Aikens people is animals and possessions are gathered together and then they are stoned with stones they are pelted with large rocks so that they would die and then all of it and the bodies and the possessions they are burned with fire in the valley of Achor a quarter by the way your Bible may have a note about this a chord means trouble in Hebrew it sounds a lot like the name akin so it’s a little bit of play on words here the trouble er of Israel is justly given trouble by God in the valley of trouble there’s two other pointed details in verse 26 I notice what Israel does after carrying out the sentence they heap a great pile of stones over akin I also notice verse 26 says that these actions of Israel they caused the fierceness of God’s anger to turn away from Israel what we’ve observed our way through the passage let’s now go to the second step of the inductive Bible study method and talk about interpretation number of questions here I want to bring to your attention first why was the whole nation held accountable for a consent of the answer has to be the terms of the ban as articulated in Joshua 6 which we read the ban was a particularly serious injunction for Israel to follow so if even one person violated the ban all Israel would have been considered guilty that’s part of the answer another part of the answer probably has to do with a practical involvement of others in Aitkin sin surely others saw or knew what Aiken had done but they concealed it along with Aiken so this participation in and concealment of Aiken sin shows that this was not simply an individual sin but a corporate sin and thus the whole group is responsible but a third part of the answer just has to do with the defiling nature of sin yes there’s the terms of the band from Joshua 6 and yes there might practically have been involved others in achan’s sin but there’s also just the fact that sin is defiling though every Israelite every individual Israelite had an obligation to follow Yahweh the nation itself was under Covenant obligation to be a holy people so when a source of defilement appeared in Israel that source had to be dealt with by the people of Israel for the people as a whole to continue in right relations with God normal sins unintentional sins needed repentance sacrifice the atoning Ministry of Israel’s priests but high-handed sins defiant sin sins like false prophecy or idolatry or adultery these sources of defilement required the death of those who committed those sins really the principle we see from the Old Testament law is the more serious and widespread the sin the greater the need to cut off the rot of that sin otherwise the wrath of God would not only come upon the particular sinners who committed those sins but even upon the whole nation who was complacent and did nothing to deal with the defilement and such sins not only defiled Israel in a positional sense but in a practical sense when great sins are tolerated in the community others often yield to pursuing the same sense or similar sins people learn not to fear God anymore so Israel was called to be a vigilant and holy people eager to pursue holiness not only individually but also corporately this is part of their remaining true to the covenant terms as given to them by their God and they were failing to do so in this instance so for each of these reasons God’s anger justly is put upon all Israel for a consent now here’s another question was Joshua’s complaints in verses 7 to 9 unrighteous we’re truly some of Joshua’s words sound a little bit like Israel’s sinful complaining in the wilderness you remember when they’re tested at various times they say things like oh why did we ever leave Egypt why did God bring us out here only to destroy us so Joshua sounds a little similar to that right here but then notice at the end of Joshua’s prayer what he requests or what he asks he says what would you do for your a great name god this concern over God’s glory that doesn’t sound like the unfaithful generation in the wilderness that sounds more like another person who we’ve seen complain or pray to God and that’s Moses Moses was righteous in his prayers before the Lord so what’s Joshua doing here is this righteous complaining is this unrighteous complaining you might say this is righteous complaining sometimes these two types of complaints can sound very similar even use the same words but the heart was hot behind each is different and it does show up a little bit in differences in wording you remember my explanation in a previous lesson about righteous or unrighteous complaining righteous complaining or we can call lamenting it admits before God grief pain perplexity about his purposes but and this is key it continues in belief in God and it calls on God to keep his promises believing that he will that’s what a righteous complaining does unrighteous complaining though it not only mentions the pain and the grief and the perplexity but it it charges God with wrong over these things God you you messed up you didn’t you let me down you didn’t do the things that you were supposed to do it manifests discontent and ongoing unbelief in God and yeah Greg I think you’re right this is an applicable issue for our own time as may be in your own heart you you were feeling the pain and suffering the perplexity but you want to continue in faith in God and not not unrighteous Li complained before the Lord that’s not what Josh was doing here he’s not being unrighteous in his complaint being unaware of a consent he had no explanation for what had taken place and so he goes to Gandhi says what about your promises god I know you’re a God who can be trusted but why am I not seeing your promises here this is what Joshua is asking and it’s a fine question for him to ask as long as he continues to trust God and of course God clarifies the situation for Joshua here’s another question why is Aikens family killed along with him now this question in this situation might remind you of a similar situation that we’ve seen not too long ago and that’s the situation with Korres rebellion remember Korah Dathan and abiram the leaders of the rebellion God not only judged those leaders but everyone who stayed with them the households who stood with him they also were destroyed in God’s judgment and so we asked why why did that happen the answer there is really the same answer that we see here and so I’m sounding a little bit repetitious but family members they were responsible to confront sin in each other and to report sin if there was no repentance I’d be aware from the Old Testament law says even if your son or daughter or your spouse if they follow after another God or they commit one of these high-handed sins in Israel it needs to be confronted if you just conceal it well you are participating in the sin you are complicit to some level in the sin and that apparently is what’s happened with Aikens family they didn’t report his sin they didn’t confront his sin and so they suffer the judgment with him but also there’s also what I said last time though God prescribes in Deuteronomy 24:16 that children will not be put to death for the sins of their parents they will not be executed judicially for the sins of their parents or vice versa it is a fact of God’s own severe judgment that when he judges certain individuals there are consequences for those closely associated with those individuals even family and we can multiply examples of this in the scriptures but consider even just in the localized context Israel’s completing this conquest of Canaan and what are they to do with the babes infants and children of the land there to kill them along with the adults and even the elderly but you say but some of these are mere infants they have no knowledge of right and wrong they aren’t able to choose between right and wrong why are they being put to death in the judgment well the judgment really comes upon the people of Canaan as a whole particularly the adults but that judgment has consequences even for those who are children now this is a tragic situation but it is not unjust this is a fact of our world all of us are affected by the choices of those around us the sinful choices and the righteous choices even our parents we experience undeserved blessing when our parents make good choices but we also experience the consequences and due to the sinful choices even of our parents and where they receive judgment where they receive the consequences of their sins sometimes we do too it’s just a fact of life so God is not being unjust and having Akins family being put to death though this certainly is a tragedy we’re seeing we’re seeing some principles about sin here now here’s a question I’ll ask you to answer via the comments if you can what is the point of the pile of stones heaped up over Aiken and his household the purpose of that is not explained in the text but I think we can under we can understand it why the pile of stones I’m seeing your comment which ‘red this is a sobering reality for the heads of households a reminder that your family can suffer for your sins I think that’s definitely right yeah Jenny is right so this is a memorial it is indeed a memorial not the encouraging kind of memorial that we saw when Israel across the Jordan like hey this is the power of God in your behalf but this is a sobering this is a testimony to what happens when somebody transgresses the covenant of God when he takes something from under the ban not only was he destroyed but look all that was his was destroyed his family his possessions this is a warning that other people in Israel would not do the same and I think you’re right rich even a particular warning to the heads of households others will suffer when you transgress the covenant of God and really that goes to my next question and again I’ll look for your comments in the chat what lessons can we learn here from this passage about sin and God’s judgment what are some of the lessons Oh mark asks a question where is it reference that the family members are to confront sin in their own families don’t have the particular reference in front of me but I’m thinking of the section where it talks about if if somebody in the midst of Israel goes after another God it says that no matter who it is whether it’s a beloved family member that you’re I shall not pity him but that person must be put to death so you can see that there’s some level of confrontational reporting that must be taking place there and so other sins were treated in a similar way in Israel but what are some other lessons that we can see from this passage about sin and God’s judgment I see ROI it made a comment here related to the fact that this shows the holiness of God and the judgment of God that comes upon sin and this is a very important reminder for Israel and of course for all of us we’re getting a little bit too application now but we are so tempted in our flesh to treat the holiness of God as less than it is say oh this sin is not such a big deal oh just repent of this sin later but we’re seeing once again in the Old Testament that God says you need to understand you need to understand my holiness you need to understand the seriousness of sin it brings this kind of judgment now God doesn’t always deal with sin the exact way that he does here but he does deal with sin very severely at certain times so that we would learn for the other times I’m reminded of a somewhat similar occurrence in the New Testament where we have those two people in Acts chapter 5 who pretend to give a certain amount to the church but they hold back a certain amount and this was lying before God and before the people and what did God do struck them down miraculously suddenly I didn’t do that every time somebody lied in the church but he did it at the beginning so that people would learn that God is holy yeah mark another good principle we see from this passage is that sin defiles and impacts many this goes back to what rich was saying before and that is think about how Israel all Israel was affected by just one man sin and 36 people died in Israel related to that man sin and then the family of the family of Aitkin was put to death over this sin sin has consequences and not just for yourself but for others and this is still true we can go right to the New Testament and what excitation zwi here there about the defiling nature of sin and especially the instructions given to the church about that churches need for purity and the churches need to confront sin within its midst you remember what Paul says in 1st Corinthians chapter 5 verses 6 to 8 where he’s dealing with a situation in the Corinthian church where there was a notorious sin that nobody was confronting they were even boasting about their tolerance apparently and this is what Paul says 1st Corinthians 5 or 6 to 8 your boasting is not good do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough clean out the old leaven that you may be a new lump just as fact Europe just as you are in fact unleavened four Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed therefore let us celebrate the feast not with old leaven nor the leaven of malice and wickedness but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth so we can see here that God is holy that sin is serious that judgment does come from God for sin that sin impacts other people that sin defiles what else do we see Thank You Jonathan for finding that reference Deuteronomy 13 6 to 11 related to Mark’s question appreciate that I think another thing we can point out here is that God knows all sin and sin will not escape God’s judgment I mean akin he did his best to conceal this sin and most people in Israel the vast majority of people in Israel didn’t know anything about it that God knew and in fact the whole nation was suffering because of that person’s secret sin this is like what Moses says that numbers 32 numbers 32 third verse 23 the latter part of the verse says be sure your sin will find you out and Jesus says something similar in Luke 12 to Luke 12 to Jesus says but there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed and hidden that will not be known we see this in our own lives we see sins that were held secret for a long time suddenly exposed and to the great shame and judgment of the person who participated in those sins but even sins that are not exposed in this life they will be exposed one day that’s part of the reason why God says repent now confess your sins now reveal them now turn away from them now so that they don’t have to be revealed later to your shame into your judgment proverbs 28:13 says he who conceals his transgressions will not prosper but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion and that is the beautiful mercy of the Lord if you confess your sins and turn from them now you will find God’s mercy but if you hide them if you continue in your hypocrisy and your secret and selfish sin God will judge you for it in the end Roy makes a good comment here nonetheless we see from this passage that God will lead guide to protect Israel but only as they remain obedient to him and we can see we can see that principle extends even to our own day not in the exact same way because we are not under the theocracy of Israel not under the specific terms on the covenant but it’s true God will not bless those who continue in sin even secret sin now I’m not talking about the prosperity gospel here not saying that everything will just go well for you you’ll be rich you’ll be healthy if you just obey God that’s true God’s Way is wise it does often lead to material blessing but we also know that those who follow Christ are promised trials difficulties and persecutions so you’re not going to be able to avoid that by doing what’s right in fact you will bring more trials on yourself in certain senses because you do what’s right you will bring persecution against yourself and yet it is true you will not experience the blessing of God as long as you continue in sin and I’m talking most particularly about the spiritual blessings you won’t experience the joy of the Lord you won’t experience victory over outward sin temptations as long as you are cherishing idols in the heart or as long as you are cherishing other secret sins in your life can’t compartmentalize sanctification when you are holding on you’re clinging to a sin in a certain area it will lead you to other sins and if there’s an area of your life where you do not wish to repent well what are you sacrificing you’re sacrificing a clean conscience you’re sacrificing the fellowship of walking with the Lord and holiness and the the abundant joy that comes with jesus’s way you cannot experience that you cannot have that and have your sin – it’s really the same principle we see here and really this principle ought to be a motivation for our sanctification the joy of the Lord is our strength as Nehemiah says it is the prospect of the reward of God the joy of God himself and has to be our motivation for not going after sin because that’s what we always face right the choice between the temporary pleasure of sin and the greater and everlasting joy of God when we by faith choose to seek after the Lord himself and all the joy that comes with walking with Him and in his way then we’re not tempted to go after the poisonous and fleeting pleasures of sin but we cannot have that wonderful joy of the Lord in our sin to even the idols of our hearts it mark gives a a good quote from psalm 66:18 if I regard wickedness in my heart the Lord will not hear and Mark also points another good principle that we see from this passage God is gracious even in his justice he preserved the whole nation even though the offender had to be judged and indeed you can never really separate the the attributes of God his mercy his love his goodness are always there even with his justice and his wrath so we see a number of important principles regarding sin and God’s judgment and they are relevant for us today now we’re not going to read the rest of the account of the conquest of I I recommend you read it on your own after today’s lesson but I’ll just summarize it for you Joshua eight verses 1 to 29 God commands Joshua to take more men and to attack the city of eye in a certain way they’re set up a ruse and ambush draw the defenders out of the city then seize the city surround the enemy soldiers and destroy them Joshua obeys God and the plan works Israel destroys the 12,000 people of AI at God’s command and they seize the property in AI at God’s command as well issue will then burns the city this is one of the three cities of the conquest that Israel actually burns as reported in the scriptures Jericho is one is a second and then hots war when we haven’t talked about yet is the third all the other cities they leave intact because they’re gonna live in them but they burn I and they leave it as a ruin again as memorial to God’s power and judgment now you can see this clear contrast between Joshua 8 and Joshua 7 when Israel has no accursed things in its midst no abominations in its midst while God is again fighting for them making Israel unstoppable in battle once again and where you see this in an even more striking way when we get to Joshua 10 so please take your Bibles and go to Joshua 10 let me give you some background as we look at this passage and Joshua 9 Israel unwittingly swears a pact with certain inhabitants of the land the Gibeonites now these Gibby Knights they had heard of Israel’s God initials great conquests and they’re in great fear visual so they disguise certain messengers send them to Israel and pretend to be a nation that lives very far away they say hey we’ve heard about you you’re so great your God is so great please please make a pact of peace with us we don’t live close by so you don’t have to worry worry about us just make it a treaty with us Joshua and elders of Israel are skeptical but they see the disguises and they’re persuaded by them and they do not consult God and they make this pact of peace hold afterwards it’s only a few days later that Israel learns like learns that they’ve been had give me nights in fact do live in the land and actually really close by but Israel has sworn peace and they do not wish to sin and dishonor Yahweh by breaking their oath so they let the Gibeonites live but only as slaves to Israel the Gibeonites are now going to be perennially woodcutters and water carriers for Israel but in reaction to this and Joshua 10 verses one to five five great kings in southern Canaan they get spooked over Gideon’s capitulation because Gibeon was a great city it had other cities allied with it and now Gibeon has made a treaty with Israel give me are the the other kings of Canaan don’t like this they don’t they don’t like what it portends maybe other cities will do the same so they decide to attack Gibeon make Anna make an example out of Gideon so let’s read what happens next in joshua 10 verses 6 to 15 how long and me as i read this next portion joshua 10 verses 6 to 15 then the men of gideon sent word to joshua to the camp at Gilgal saying do not abandon your servants come up to us quickly and save us and help us for all the kings of the EM writes that live in the hill country have assembled against us so joshua went up from Gilgal he and all the people of war with him and all the valiant warriors yahweh said to Joshua do not fear them for I’ve given them into your hands not one of them shall stand before you so Joshua came them suddenly by marching all night from Gilgal and Yahweh confounded them before Israel and he slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon and pursued them by the way of the ascent of beth horon and struck them as far as isaiah and Makeda and as they fled before israel while they were at the descent of beth horon yahweh through large stones from heaven on them as far as as acre and they died there were more who died from the hailstones the nose and the sons of Israel killed with the sword then Joshua spoke to Yahweh in the day when Yahweh delivered up the EM rice before the sons of Israel and he said in the sight of Israel o son stands still at Gibeon and o moon in the valley of aijalon so the Sun Stood Still and the moon stopped until the nation avenged themselves of their enemies is it not written in the book of Jasher and the Sun stopped in the middle of the sky and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day there was no day like that before it or after it when Yahweh listened to the voice of a man for Yahweh fought for Israel then Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp to Gilgal wow this is really just an amazing account amazing portion of Scripture lets well have to treat this patch a little bit more briefly and for the sake of time but let’s make some observations this is visuals most dangerous battle yet five kings of Canaan and all their armies against Israel Israel’s seen great victory in the past but it was against single cities single kingdoms can they face five at once and win what will be the outcome Paul notice in verse 8 God assures the outcome before visuals even gone to battle he says you will prevail don’t fear them and verse 9 says visual travels all or travels through the night and surprises their enemies in the morning enemies are probably surrounding Gibeon besieging the city as you’ll comes upon them surprises them and then notice verse 10 the enemies go into a panic but why it says Yahweh confounded them before Israel it’s always amazing to me in military confrontations or even just great contests even sports contests it’s amazing how one little moment could go in either direction it could be a moment where the people rally and courage or the people panic and but God makes sure here this surprise this sudden arrival of Israel in the morning it resulted in panic God is able to make something that normally would result in panic not do so they can also take something where panic was not to necessary outcome and he can bring it to pass because he’s sovereign Nana means visual panic and they flee they flee westward from Gibeon via the ascent and descent of Beth Laurent and towards the aijalon valley so the ascent of Beth Horn they go up they go up in elevation a little bit and then they go down a long way via the descent to Beth Laurent so then we’re in the hill country of Israel or Canaan at this point so it’s not like you can just go anywhere you want there there’s certain valleys certain ways to travel that you have to go and these guys these enemies they’re going down the descent of Beth Laurent because that’s pretty much the only way they can get away from Israel this means they’re primarily fleeing downhill which meant they would have been particularly vulnerable to missile fire from Israel Israel can stand on the higher elevation or on the sides of the valley and rain arrows down upon the fleeing the fleeing Canaanites but there’s someone who’s sending more missiles down upon the enemy than even Israel is and that’s God himself according to verse 11 you see God sends large stones probably hailstones and these are very miraculous they apparently are selectively targeting the Canaanites sparing Israel all the way from Gibeon to Isaiah which is a Canaanite fortress on the other end of towards the other end of the aijalon valley now it says that these hailstones they killed more people than even the Israelite warriors did these must have been very scary stones but then notice the striking declaration given by Joshua in verses 12 and 13 Joshua apparently moved by the Spirit of God speaking according to the will of God he commands the Sun and Moon not to move so that Israel could keep attacking pursuing the enemies of God now remember Israel has come upon these enemies early in the morning so when Joshua speaks he indeed probably sees the Sun in the east at Gibeon while the moon is in the West above the aijalon valley and so he commands them to not move according to their current positions now this is an amazing kind of Prayer amazing command but what’s even more amazing is that the Sun and Moon obey the Sun we’re told stops in the middle of the sky and does not go down for an entire day for about a whole day and that could be 12 hours the daylight portion of a day or 24 hours the exact meaning of day here is not completely clear from the context either 12 or 24 hours verse 14 emphasizes though that this was an incredible day a very unique day none others like it because in that day you always into the voice of a man and he fought for Israel with this extra daylight visual willfully pursues the enemy and having accomplished a great slaughter verse 15 says Joshua and his army returned to their base at Gilgal near the ruins of Jericho now just an amazing account let’s ask a few questions of interpretation now and again you can answer this in the chat what does this battle and the manner of victory once again emphasize to Israel and to us today what’s one of the main lessons coming through from this what do you think this is entirely consistent with the things that we’ve been seeing initials conquest yeah Greg says God is powerful powerful to save we’re seeing that once again Craig says God is sovereign yes God is sovereign not only to cause panic in God’s enemies but to rain hail from heaven to cause the Sun and Moon to hold their position this is incredible power of God being put on display and on whose behalf on behalf of his people and really that’s that’s quite amazing I mean how many times does God have to show us in the Old Testament or anywhere in the scripture is that he is powerful and he is powerful on behalf of his people if that’s if it’s true that God is able to deliver victory in such a way here in the Old Testament then we’ll not God also be able to deliver his people in the present time will they not be able to keep his promises to them even to you even to us in the middle of the coronavirus it’s not able to keep his promises Greg says God didn’t have to save in such a miraculous way but he he did so in particular to exhibit his power and glory roy says we see the impact of prayer and obedience to god yes as we were seeing from the previous passage on you when you’ve got this sin in your midst you don’t see the blessing of god but look in a very practical material way for israel according to their covenant when you follow the Lord look at what he’s able to do for you look at the blessing of God upon his people he brings them the victory that he promised he would give them and Mark says God worked beyond the mere ability of his people all of these things showing us just as we saw at Jericho God is mighty he’s mighty to save deliver and bless on behalf of his people but he’s also mighty to judge and destroy and to bring just severe wrath upon sin these five Canaanite kings and their people they were wicked and God made sure that they were dealt a severe blow in this battle so we see all these things here and that should be an encouragement to us and a sobering reminder now I want to ask a little bit of questions though about this Sun miracle how is it that the Sun Stood Still there’s some there’s a little bit of a kind of interesting ways that people try and explain this some try to characterize this Sun standing still as referring to an eclipse they say what really happened here is that God caused an eclipse kind of blocks out the Sun so that the people visual can remain cool as they pursue their enemies and fight during the day that’s an interesting interpretation but has nothing to do with what the passage actually says and there’s nothing here about coolness or eclipses that that doesn’t fit what the passage at all-but did the Sun and Moon literally stand still I mean from what we know about the about the world today when we see the Sun move across the sky the sun’s not really moving it’s actually the earth moving so isn’t the Bible being a little inaccurate when it says the Sun Stood Still oh this is being too hard on on the way that we actually communicate in the way the history is written we should acknowledge that the passage is probably using phenomenological language that is it is actually describing manners as they appeared rather than is technically scientifically accurate but this is the way we speak all the time we often refer to sunrise and sunset and we’re technologically advanced people of the 21st century but we still describe things in phenomenological turns how they appear the same thing is probably happening here the reason the Sun stops moving and are appears to stand still is because what God is actually doing is that he’s causing the earth to stop moving he’s stopping the Earth’s rotation so that the Sun stays in its same position from the is viewing it on the earth this is not scientifically inaccurate at all but someone might ask wait a second if the earth stops moving wouldn’t that cause all sorts of deadly chaos on the earth and this is a fair question because after all scientists have determined today that the earth rotates at about a thousand miles per hour and what would happen if something that’s moving at a thousand miles per hour suddenly stopped what if what would happen to all the things on the Earth’s surface well they’d go flying wouldn’t they everything would become a missile because of inertia because of momentum so let me ask you this question how could God have stopped the Earth’s rotation without everything flying all over the place what do you think Gregg says well he created the earth so doesn’t sound too hard for him to slow it in such per to to stop it in such a way that things don’t fly everywhere I can see at least two ways this might have come about magda ass doesn’t have something to do with gravity mark says we can’t explain it naturally well well we’ll get back to just some of those comments in just a second Kevin says there’s just a miracle though certainly something non normal is happening here this is miraculous in in one way or another in terms of describing what is what is taking place it may be that the Lord slows the rotation of the earth rather than just stops it all of a sudden until it eventually stops it’s interesting if you notice in the passage Joshua says son don’t move from over Gibeon so that sounds like because giving would have been in the East and the Sun was in the east notice later in the passage though it says the Sun went into the middle of the sky so apparently the Sun did move after Joshua uttered his command but then it stopped so it may be that what happened was God slowed the rotation of the earth in such a way that there wasn’t the dramatic inertia that would have happened if God suddenly stopped the earth he slowed the earth until it basically stopped and then he gradually increased the rotation of the earth so that the day would continue that may be one way that he did it or it could simply be that God stopped the earth and he also stopped all the momentum I mean we’re talking about God here he’s able to do whatever he pleases and so he can stop the earth and also stop the momentum – we don’t know exactly how he did it but whatever way he did it he made it happen so God is able to indeed keep the Sun where Joshua wanted it without the world falling into deadly chaos and many of you are pointing out yeah he’s God he’s not hindered by the laws of nature because he creates the laws of nature and he’s able to he’s able to do whatever he pleases now her so as we kind of already said whatever the best scientific description whatever the scientific description of what happened here this clearly was not normal not natural so what was God doing for his people he was doing a miracle a great miracle I mean think about the miracles that we’ve seen the scriptures this is one of the hugest he kept the Sun where it was as it appeared to the people on the earth for an entire day this is the power of God on behalf of his people and he displayed that kind of power in the Old Testament but he still is powerful on behalf of his people today even us now one other word about this miracle here there’s a story that circulates every now and then about a NASA computer running a calculation in the 1960s charting the movement and Sun throughout history and reportedly this computer yielded a glitch in the simulations for the years of 1400 BC and it revealed that there was an extra 24 hours in the solar cycle that could not be accounted for researchers couldn’t understand supposedly their NASA researchers couldn’t understand where this extra day came from until one of them realized that this must be the 24 hour or the thus the special day of Joshua as recorded in chapter 10 I don’t know if you’ve ever heard this story it’s kind of a neat story but is it true actually it’s not not only is there no sound historical evidence that research or realizations of this type ever occurred at NASA but there’s actually no way that they could ever have occurred computer simulations can only tell you what should have happened according to known inputs and parameters if we don’t know all the information the computer can’t run a proper simulation and we can’t do a proper comparison the only way a computer simulation could reveal a discrepancy in the movement of solar bodies in ancient times would be if the Reacher’s knew the precise locations and movements of those bodies to compare with a computers calculation of course we don’t have such detailed records from ancient times so there’d be no way for this story to actually come about science does not prove or disprove the miraculous day of Joshua 10 but we don’t need Sciences confirmation to know that this really took place now why is that because God has made clear to us that he is and that his word is true mrs. Romans 1 says we all know deep in our hearts that the Lord is true that he is indeed the God of the Bible and we recognize it when his spirit moves in our hearts when he opens our blind eyes to see we know that God is we know that he’s revealed himself to us or revealed himself to us in the Bible and therefore that his word this this Bible is authoritative and inerrant it is totally accurate and we can trust this Word of God above any earthly authority and believe this word when no earthly word is available to speak you know it’s very popular among biblical scholars today to deny the miracle of Joshua 10 they say oh this is too incredible to believe no actually they’re truly incredible thing is to deny the knowledge of God which we all have and if God exists and he is the God of the Bible then this is not too hard for him and he indeed accomplished it so as our time is winding down a little bit let me let’s talk a little bit about application we’ve been seeing application as we go along but just three three avenues of application that I want to bring to your attention based on what we looked at today from Joshua 7 and 10 first we need to take individual and corporate sin seriously we saw this in particular from Joshua 7 whether Israel’s under special terms of under its covenant with God we also have been called to holiness we cannot out of some twisted idea of love say oh you know I’m just not gonna I don’t even want to mess with that other person’s sin I don’t want to say anything to them about it learn from the lesson of Aitkin and Israel you’re not confronting the sin first of all that shows dishonor to God but second of all shows a lack of love to others because sin impacts others no sin can stay restricted to one person others learn to do the same sin or others are unpicked it by impacted by the life of someone who is in sin now there’s a way to be to wrongly pursue confronting sin and others we can do that judgmentally and hypocritically and according to terms that are not actually in the scriptures but let’s get that faulty idea out of our heads that if you love people that you don’t confront sin and that’s not true actually love covers transgressions by pursuing people that’s actually what the end of the book of James says he who brings back a sinner from his way know that that person will cover a multitude of sins and isn’t that what love seeks to do it wants to see sin covered and wants to see sin paid for and atoned by God and fellowship with God restored so we need to take not only individual sin corporate sin seriously but we all chose to be seeking the joy of God over the pleasure of sin again this is something emphasized when it comes to Joshua 7 this is our great motivation and sanctification even when we both experience earthly blessings earthly vindication you do the right thing but people are just not responding to it that’s okay because you can have the joy of the Lord the joy of pleasing the Lord the blessing that comes with walking in his way that ought to be your chief motivation as you pursue sanctification and then thirdly remember the power of God on behalf of his people we see it in a titanic way in Joshua 10 and even in Joshua 8 at all throughout the conquest this is God’s power on behalf of his people why because God wants to wants us to get in our heads which is so quick to doubt the Lord that he is mighty and he is committed to his people he will keep his promises both to save and to judge so what should we do we should believe the Lord we should obey the Lord we should seek refuge in the Lord if you have not yet come to the Lord via the only way Jesus Christ you need to do so repent of your sin turn of your sin seek refuge in the savor the one who can make you acceptable to God you can who can do much better than merely protect you from the coronavirus he can do that if he so wills it in his good pleasure but more importantly he can save you from the eternal consequences of sin and bring you into his presence is his abundant life forever seek refuge in the Lord remember his great power and beware his great judgment ness bring us to the end of our time today if you have questions you can definitely email me or you could post something in the comments I’ll stay I’ll stay for a few more minutes or I’ll stay for a little bit of time afterwards but that’s all for this week next week we’re gonna cover the rest of the conquest and the distribution of the land to the different tribes I’m so glad that you were with me today let me pray and then I’ll hang around a little bit too to just interact with the chat lady pray Heavenly Father we thank you that you are the mighty God you’re the God who even stops the Sun in the moon right in their position or stops the earth so that appears that they don’t move and you you accomplished such mighty victories for the people of Israel not because they deserved it but because you were gracious and you were committed them you committed yourself to them and you’ve committed yourself to us those of us who are in Jesus Christ and Lord we thank you for that because you are on our side indeed a psalm 46 says why should we fear if even the whole earth is caught in a tumult you are on our side you will take care of us even through the trials and difficulties but thank you for this comfort but Lord were also aware of the the sobering word when it comes to sin and judgment we cannot be nonchalant about sin in ourselves or on others so lord I pray that you would give us the courage and the love that would even seek to address sin lord I pray that we would not think lightly of your judgment but we would fear you with an appropriate reverence and fear because you are the great and holy God I pray Lord you to blast encourage the people today even as they are home or in various places and Lord take care of you people and we praise You God because we already know that you will in Jesus name Amen

    Israel Conquers Jericho

Answers Bible Curriculum 2nd Edition Unit 7 Lesson 66

This week in Sunday school, we look at Israel’s first conquest in the promised land: the city of Jericho. Why was Jericho such a difficult but important obstacle to overcome? Why did God give the battle directions that he did? And what was God demonstrating for all time by leaving Jericho a smoldering ruin?

Our main text for this lesson is Joshua 5:13-6:27.

all right well I’ll have to do a little bit of truncate version of what I prepared today but welcome to Sunday school we’re moving on through the book of Joshua and we are looking at the next thing that God did he’s done preparing the way for the people of Israel now he’s actually going to have Israel conquered their first their first city in Canaan and we’re gonna see how that happened today and we’re gonna see how the fall of Jericho really is meant to be a sobering sobering reminder on the one hand it shows God’s power to deliver but it also shows what happens when you do not stand with Yahweh when you persist in unbelief and we need to see that picture today so we’re gonna go through that let me pray before we go on Heavenly Father we thank you for your perfect provision we know you’re doing all things well I pray Lord that you would bless this time together amen okay please take your Bibles then open to Joshua chapter 5 Joshua 5 and we’re gonna be starting in verse 13 between where we were last time and where we are today the only big difference or the only thing to her let you know what happened is that all Israel’s males were circumcised apparently the previous generation had not accomplished that part of the Mosaic law which they had been given and also Israel celebrated the Passover at Gilgal but then and Joshua 5:13 the narrative continues and that’s what we’re going to pick up we’re gonna do the Jericho narrative in two parts first we’ll hear the battle directions from God from 513 265 and then we’ll see how things play out but look at 5:13 and we’re going to read to chapter 6 verse 5 here’s what it says now came about when Joshua was by Jericho that he lifted up his eyes and looked and behold a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand and Joshua went to him and said to the man who was standing opposite him or said to him are you for us before our adversaries he said no rather I indeed come now as captain up the hosts of the Lord that is Yahweh and Joshua fell on his face to the earth and bow down it said to him what has my lord to say to my sir to say to his servant the captain of Yahweh’s hosts said to Joshua remove your sandals from your feet at a place where you are standing is Olli and Joshua did sit at Jericho was tightly shut because the sons of Israel no one went out and no one came in Yahweh said to Joshua see I have given Jericho into your hand with its king and the valiant warriors shall march around the city all the men of war circling the city once you should do so for six days also seven priests I’ll carry seven trumpets of rams horns before the ark then on the seventh day shall march around the city seven times and the priests shall blow the trumpets shall be that when they make a long glass with the ram’s horn when hear the sound of the trumpet all the people shall shout with a great shout and the wall of the city will fall down flat and the people will go up every man straight ahead well let’s start observations on this first section text just basic observation of the detailed passage understand the very first verse you read 5:13 that Joshua is out by Jericho I’d appreciate everything that’s about to happen we need to know a little bit about Jericho as far as we can tell so let’s hear some background ancient Jericho appears to correspond to the archaeological site known as tell s Sultana today which is this outside the modern city of Jericho and this site if it is indeed ancient Jericho and there seems to be good evidence that it is built on the western side of the Jordan Valley on a hill next to a spring and though much of the southern Jordan Valley is pretty barren I mention that for you last time the area around Jericho was pretty much the alternate title for Jericho sometimes using the Old Testament is the city of palm trees for example we see that in Deuteronomy 34 3 so environmentally it was pretty nice place Jericho not only had water access and a good climate but it was situated on a very strategically or militarily and economically strategic location as it basically function as the Gateway to Canaan from the east if you want to get to canons interior had to go through Jericho which was good for the economy of Jericho because merchants would have to pass through there you wait to assess customed used but lost cement if an army was trying to come to Canaan from the east they had to face Jericho if they didn’t conquer Jericho well then raiding parties from Jericho would continue to harass that army from the rear so with these environmental economic and military factors in its favor you can understand that Jericho became a desirable place to live in fact Jericho the earliest cities ever built secular archaeologists archaeologists need to found in Jericho to about eight thousand percent thousand see now in this class we argued that that’s that’s not a good timeline that doesn’t take the time details of the Bible seriously especially in Texas five Genesis 11 so we would compress what is usually stretched out by secular archaeologists and say that Jericho is probably founded not too long after the Tower of Babel around 2100 BC it would be the Neolithic period at the end of the Ice Age but certainly whenever it was found at Jericho was in each and see over time Jericho became heavily fortified city was built on the top of a mountain area and then go back to the other slide city was built on the top of a mountain T had two sets of walls at first earlier said it was built on the top of the Mount and within those walls would have been housed the main part of the city this wall was 26 feet high and six feet thick and then a second later set of walls was built near the bottom of the mound and it consisted of two parts there was the retaining wall of large boulders about 15 feet high and five feet thick so painting wall goes right up against the ground against the soil and then on top of that was another mud brick wall that had similar dimensions to the wall on the top of the hill so in all the bottom wall of boulders and mud brick was about 40 feet high that’s a pretty big one that’s four stories you can see that the picture’ the strategic management here at the at the bottom of the slide I’m showing you now it seems there was some ballsy be there were some houses in between the two walls but archaeologically these houses appeared to be flimsier than the houses on the top of the hill that was probably the less desirable part of the city to live shadier area where you’d find even prostitutes like Rahab now in human terms Jericho presented a very imposing defensive obstacle if one tried to scale the bottom wall they then had to climb a steep slope under fire from those in the top wall and then scale or break through that second wall it’s basically a slaughter field an assault on Jericho would be a death trap you would lose tons of soldiers trying to break through the walls so it makes more sense to just try and stage this you starve out the inhabitants but Jericho was also welcomed prestigious the city’s spring as I mentioned before is built near spring that spring was in the same walls so it has a constant water supply moreover by the time Israel approaches Jericho Jericho has just finished the grain harvest that’s around the spring around Passover when the green harvest would have been brought in fact the archaeological remains a telethon they have found remains of grain in containers at Jericho or at this site so by the time Israel reaches Jericho the inhabitants are well supplied with both food and water and they would have had extra defenders in the city now ancient Palestinian cities were usually not that big but any times of danger people who lived around the city would come into the city for protection so maybe there would be normally a few thousand people in the city that number would have smelt swell dramatically because of the invasion of Israel so Erika has a ton of food a ton of water and a ton of men to defend it so Israel faces this strategic puzzle Joshua faces a strategic puzzle salting the city doesn’t sound like a good idea seizing the city is going to be difficult and take a long time Israel will probably suffer more in the seeds than in Jericho will because after they’re done foraging the food around the area there you’re not gonna have any more food so what you about Jericho well that’s continued on in the narrative notice again in 5:13 as Joshua’s by Jericho Joshua encounters a man this man has a drawn sword unsure of his allegiance Joshua asks the man declare his side draw you for Jericho but notice in verse 14 man responds says no just not exactly the way that Joshua Frank the question says no or neither and he declares himself to be part of Yahweh’s army even the captain of Yahweh’s by me well after hearing this replying notice how Joshua responds he falls in his face by I was down and asks what was captain asked say to Joshua before proceeding the captain commands Joshua to remove his sandals saying the place where you’re standing is fully hey we’ve heard that phrase before remember back in Ex chapter 3 the same thing was said to Moses at the burning bush and remember and that earlier is instance in whose presence Moses was he was in Yahweh’s presence God’s presence even the angel of Y always presence each of those things is set to be true there now here in Joshua 5 notice we have God’s captain speaking to Joshua but then in chapter 6 verse 2 who’s speaking – Joshua there it says y’all y’all ways notice in also at verse 1 of chapter 6 that the narrow dimensions that Jericho’s in lockdown nobody coming in or out inhabitants of Jericho would likely expect that it has come siege the city they’re preparing to outlast Israel God hasn’t mind something different than a long siege for his people notice in chapter 6 verse 2 God confirms he has given Jericho and all its warriors and its king it’s the hand of Israel but he gives specific directions for how visible is that actually conquered this city who sees verses 3 to 5 in chapter 6 visuals warriors are to march in a circle around the city once a day for six days will be accompanying by ARC lb7 priests blankets made out of ram’s horns and in the seventh day a little bit different direction it shows to march 7 times around the city and then there’s going to be a long glass with the trumpet and all the men of each bill will then shout what’s the promise result God says when that happens the wall the walls of Jericho will fall down flat or literally they will fall it will fall in its place and then every man will be able to go up straight into the city and slay the inhabitants so these are the battle directions of God we’ve made these observations let’s ask a few interpretation questions now first who is the captain of always art can we make a more specific identification we can this must be God himself even the Son of God we see the same thing here as happened pre-pivot madness if he has to remove his sandals Joshua has removed his sandals it’s because the presence of God is there and also this abrupt switching of where it says the angel of Yahweh or the captain of the always army and then the AH way himself further indicates that this is God Himself speaking to Joshua it’s not like the the captain suddenly disappeared announcer she’s always speaking of this because they’re the same and yet they’re different Yahweh is there and yet this person is distinct from Yahweh represents Yahweh how can that be it’s because God is Trinity of course we’ve looked at that truth before and we’ve also said likely this is the son Oh God because as we here in the New Testament is the explainer he is the mediator of God to men so the son of God is very active in the old pest even here with the people of Israel but why why appeared through Joshua this way with a sword drawn in his hand asking Joshua to remove his sandals and giving direction for Jericho’s defeat well certainly one reason is because this is confirming once again that Josh is God’s name he is the leader chosen by God for his what happened to Moses happens to Joshua Joshua has a similarly special relationship with God but there’s another more important reason it’s to emphasize something to Joshua and all that is Yahweh is the one the papper he is mighty and he will accomplish the victory for Israel I mean Yahweh himself has his sword drawn and is ready to go he’s ready to lead his hosts his army and if you’re always ready to fight well then can the outcome ever be in doubt that’s Joshua did you he used to go forth and fight as well because Yahweh is the one who’s really fighting for him and for all his bill victory is assured not because the people of Israel have power or even because Joshua’s are special it’s because Yahweh fights for Israel I will bring about the victory and the battle directions given by God only further emphasize this point these walls are going to come down these mighty walls these great walls of Jericho are gonna come down without Israel doing anything practical to bring them down no catapults no siege ramp they’re just gonna march around and blow trumpets and shower now normally that would have no effect on the walls maybe it’s effective psychological warfare but that’s not gonna bring down the walls they’re not going to produce enough sonic power to bring down those walls but God was going to use these actions as part of a miraculous deliverance and not all of Israel’s victories are miraculous like this one sometimes it’s merely Providence of God but God shows that this first battle this first conquest would be plainly miraculous God wanted to etch firmly in Israel’s minds who has the power and who’s giving the victory because of this issue was to be confident in God and carefully obey his commands but what Israel do that let’s read on see if God keeps his promise whether Israel believes that promise okay Joshua chapter 6 verses 6 to 27 where we see the rest of the Jericho narrative let’s read that it says so Joshua the son of nun hold the priests and said to them take up the Ark of the Covenant and let seven priests carry seven trumpets the ram’s horns before the ark garlic and he said to the people go forward and march around the city let the armed men go on before the Ark of Yahweh it was so that when Joshua had spoken to the people seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of random horns for Yahweh went forward and glued the trumpets the ark of the covenant of yahweh followed the arms of men went before the priests súplica the trumpets and the rearguard came after the ark while they continued to blow the trumpets but Joshua commanded the people saying you shout out shout no let your voice be heard nor let a word proceed out of your mouth until the day I tell you shout then you shall shout so he had the Ark of Yahweh taken around the city circling it once and they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp now Joshua rose early in the morning and a priest soaked up the Ark of Yahweh the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams horns before the Ark of Yahweh went on continually and blew the trumpets and the armed men went before them and the rear guard came after the ARCIC away while they continued to blow the trumpets that’s the second day they march around the city once and returned to the camp it did so for six days then on the seventh day it rose early at the dawning of the day and marched around the city in the same manner seven times only on that day and they marched around the city seven times at the seventh time when the priests blew the trumpets Joshua said to the people shout yahweh has given you this city the city shall be under the ban it and all that is in it belongs to Yahweh only Rahab the harlot and all who are with her in the house shall live because she hid the messengers whom we sent it asks for you only keep yourselves from the thing–the under the ban so that you do not covet them and take some of the things under the ban and make the camp of Israel accursed and bring trouble on it but all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron holy to Yahweh they shall go into the Treasury of Yahweh so the people shouted and the priests blew the trumpets when the people heard this out of the trumpet the people shouted with a great shout and the Wall fell down flat so that the people went up in this the everyman straight ahead and they took this city they utterly destroyed everything in the city both man and woman young and old ox sheep and donkey with the edge of the sword Joshua said two men would spied out the land go into the harlots house and bring the woman and all she has out of there as you have sworn to her so the young men who were spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had they also brought out all her relatives and placed them outside the camp of Israel they burned the city with fire and all that was in it only the silver and gold your articles are bronze and iron that put into the Treasury of the house of Yahweh however Rahab the harlot and her father’s household and all she had Joshua spared and she has lived in a mystic jewel to this day where she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy on Jericho then Joshua made them take an oath at that time saying cursed before Yahweh is the man who rises up and builds this city Jericho but the loss of his firstborn when he shall lay its foundation and with the loss of his youngest son he shall set up its gates so Yahweh was with Joshua and his fame was in all the land let’s make observations on the second section now you can see Israelites do just as y’all become in march around the city once a day for six days and then seven times on the last day as Parcher part of marching around the city notice the additional restriction given by josh man in verse 10 for this chapter he says no one is to shout or make any noise at all just made for a bit of an eerie singing they’ve got these armed men all these armed men from Israel marching silently all their priests below periodically on their ram’s horns can you imagine what this would have looked like from Jericho now how close did the Israelites get to this as they march around text doesn’t say but I imagine they didn’t march close enough to be struck by arrow fire or by sling stones they probably put a little bit of a distance between and the walls defenders notice in verses 16 to 20 on 7th day before Israel shouts Joshua announces that the cities the place gods I shall him what does this ban mean well it’s everything is dedicated to Yahweh and the city and its people are to be utterly destroyed notice here explicitly it says no one is to be left alive except Rahab and her family and as for the metal items of the city they’re to be added to the always treasure and everything else is to destroy livestock other goods clothing items all to be destroyed now for many other cities in Israel’s conquest God does not command Israel to place the city and it’s items and and its items under the band normally Israel is free to take the plunder of the cities they conquer but in every city whether under the ban or not that people of the land are to be completely wiped out and woman-child old man other infant all to be killed no one left but the ban is something that’s put in place here and the battle precedes just as God said it would see from the text when the trumpets give belong blast people of Israel give a great shout and the walls immediately fall down and the Israelite warriors proceed into the city collapsing walls likely made ramps for the issue is to easily scale rushed into this though interestingly according to archaeology it’s Alisal times there was one section of outer wall that did not completely collapse which would have allowed the homes or home in that section halte name tax and can we think of any good reason why God would want a certain part of the wall not to fall certainly right because someone’s house was in that wall mayhaps apparently there was some fighting that took place even after Israel went into the city Joshua 2411 a does mention that the citizens of Jericho fought against Israel but this was a battle whose outcome was not in doubt at this point the walls have fallen the defenders have no chance at the end of the battle verse 22 tells us that Joshua has the two spies bring out Rahab a family from the city of Jericho why is that because usuals going to burn the whole thing which is what they do and again can you imagine what this experience would have been like for Rahab and her family members he leave the city of Jericho they see the rubble wall they see all all the people of their city slaughtered and then they see the city burned certainly this would have been a very sobering picture even though there’s joy and deliverance there is also that awesome fear of what they have been spared from even the judgment of God after the city has made a smoldering debris pile notice what Joshua pronounces in verse 26 curse on whomever rebuilds Jericho now get the idea of the rebuilding here this is not simply people building homes on this site again actually we’re gonna see we’re not going to see but if you if you investigate there are several times in the Old Testament where it mentions people living in Jericho Jericho is one of the cities given as tribal inheritance and yet there is this curse and notice he says the one who lays the foundations and sets up at Gates Foundation’s and gates her for what four walls Josh was saying whoever refortified this city tries to build the walls again let that person be cursed he will lose some of his sons and we actually see this curse fulfilled later on in the scripture first Kings 1634 thefts in his days were in Ahab’s days he yelled at Bethel I built Jericho that is fortified Jericho he laid its foundations the loss of Abram his firstborn incentive its gates who lost his youngest son tsukuba according to the word of yahweh which he spoke by joshua the son of nun and that was many years later yet the curse of joshua which really gods curse came to pass with these observations in the second section let’s ask a few more questions of interpretation how would you characterize the obedience of joshua in israel to the lord’s battle plan again it is complete it is total obedience and again we might be shocked and I remember as a young believer being particularly shocked at the fact because growing up on VeggieTales and its version of Joshua at Jericho that depiction makes it seem like you sure was questioning God and not really sure whether they should go through with his battle plan but that’s not what we see here no second-guessing no grumbling didn’t seem to bother issue at all that God said to do things that weren’t practical for bringing the walls down God said that it wouldn’t bring the walls down and they believed him God vindicated their faith now it’s possible there was some grumbling some second guessing that’s not recorded in the scripture but it’s not the impression we get them to text fact as we’ve already seen and as we are going to see as we continue through the book of Joshua this second generation is are you different from the first generation first generation was characterized by unbelief and disobedience and complaints second generation not perfect but they are characterized by obedience which comes from faith they actually believe Yahweh and he always pleased to give them the land and to fulfill his promises to Israel Hebrews 11 30 confirms that these walls came down by faith Hebrews 11 30 says by faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days God rewarded the faith of Israel now some might say that God shows himself cruel here by commanding the complete slaughter of Jericho and the rest of Kanaan’s inhabitants but why is this not the case and this is a question we brought up but as we go through the Congress we need to keep reminding ourselves that this was not cruel or evil by God why because God had ordained this as a judgment of the people the land for their wickedness he had given them time to repent even centuries to repent and we told Abraham back in Genesis 15 the iniquity of the amorite is not yet complete I’m giving them time but they won’t repent and their evil practices are even recorded at the Torah the things that they would do like sacrifice their children through their gods and all sorts of other debauchery and cruelty God says now it’s time for judgment Israel you’re gonna be my agents of judgment you will destroy them and I will give you the land so this is not cool from God this is justice from God also we saw with Rahab it’s not as if the people the land had no option they could have sided with Israel and they could have fled from the land but they chose not to do so and partially that was because God was gonna bring judgment on them and we also know that God warned Israel do not leave any survivors because if you do and if you live with them and even intermarry with them they will lead you astray they will lead you into idolatry and all sorts of sin that’s exactly what we see happen to Israel because they don’t keep bounced camp and that comes later see that in the book of Judges this was not evil this was not from God this was according to his wisdom at justice but why was Jericho put under the ban what most the other Canaanite cities that Israel conquers are not now why does Joshua pronounce a special curse on whoever refortified Jericho hex doesn’t tell us specifically but think about the significance of this moment this is the first city that Israel’s conquering and Canaan and it’s one of the most impressive cities even seemingly impregnable therefore it makes sense that God intended for Jericho to be made example I wanted an object lesson to be made in Jericho for Israel to see for the surrounding nations to see Jericho was this wicked city that seemed like it could not be conquered yet it was easily conquered by God and his people and all of its inhabitants were destroyed saved Rahab and her relatives so this was to be a testimony like Sodom and Gomorrah it’s a testimony to both the awesome power of God to save and bring victory but it’s also testimony of the terrible price of sin Israel wouldn’t need this picture as they proceeded in the rest of the conquest and as they proceeded in their relationship with God in Atlanta therefore to remove this very startling and important picture would have been a foolish act I would act a rebellious act even an act that warrant the curse of God don’t refortified Jericho leave it a ruin as a testimony even a memorial to Israel on the other nations of course later generations didn’t heed that warning God wanted Jericho to remain a picture even though Jericho was rebuilt we still do have the testimony in the scripture so that we don’t miss the picture and I think that really points us to the final question I want to ask you what is the purpose of this cow why did God have Joshua write about the Battle of Jericho and even devote an extensive extensive amount of text to it does it go through the rest the conquest narrative we won’t see the same amount of time devote to the other city why here is to emphasize what we’ve been saying Israel is to trust in the power of God and be careful to obey Him in whatever he commands why because God is mighty to save or to destroy visuals gonna continue to face trials in the conquest and in the days afterward they would need to exercise faith in Yahweh they would need to carefully obey Him and so they need Jericho’s reminder that’s why Joshua wrote about it but the Spirit of God the next generation would surely be tempted to think from a mere human perspective about the challenges they faced oh we don’t have the strength to go against this pagan invader or we can’t repay God’s and we have to compromise if we want to survive but Jericho God’s victory brought about at Jericho stands as a powerful testimony to the people you can obey Yahweh and if you do he will bring his promises to pass to you believe the Lord nothing is too hard for him he is mighty and look what he did with Jericho most powerful fortress can be reduced to smoking bubble if God ordains it he made impractical measures of men marching shouting trumpet blowing bring down this great city so what will God do for you if you are willing to believe him and obey him will he not also vindicate your faith of course the answer is yes and that wasn’t just something for Israel to realize continually that’s something that we must realize as well and isn’t that what we’re seeing over and over again as we move through the conquest narrative god is mighty you can trust in him if you do obey you will make eight your faith see that is the main message the main takeaway of this account and now I want to think through a little bit more how that applies to us can we be more specific about what this means for you and for me so let me ask you a few questions what’s your Jericho what’s the Jericho that you face right now in your life what situations are you facing that includes seemingly insurmountable obstacles to obedience I understand what I’m asking here I’m not talking about another way that maybe prosperity preachers talk oh what’s that thing you really want that challenge that breakthrough that you’re looking for so that you can get that promotion or that you can have the freedom from this illness not talking about that because God didn’t promise those things in the scripture God did say if you obey me I’ll vindicate you so where are you facing difficult obedience to God you say oh god if I do this it’s gonna be hard Oh God anything but this the consequences of my obedience are going to be maybe too much for me it’s like a Jericho where are you seeing that now in your life maybe would the work our ministry task set before you or relationships where you need to give the gospel or confront soon yes oh god I don’t know how it’s gonna turn out you believe that God truly is the one with real power real wisdom and a good heart that he stands on the side of his people and he’s able to make the greatest efforts the greatest schemes of man which are done apart from God he can turn them into nothing but he can take even the smallest faith-filled efforts and turn them into great victory look at how God provided in Jericho if God is able to do that for Israel is he not able to also provide for you in his perfect way we don’t know how God will do it but know when God will do it but he will do it he will vindicate the faith of his people we’re not to sit by passively until God acts we got to proceed in obedience expecting great things from Gatlin so asks ask yourselves it’s morning are you like Joshua are you like Rahab are you like this believing generation of Israel do you trust God enough to actually obey Him even when it’s difficult if not and if you haven’t been doing this you need to repent because this Trust is a slant or again let’s go he’s the covenant-keeping god he’s the mighty God and so when you refuse to trust it when you live in fear and anxiety what you’re saying is God I can’t trust you no where did my trust you haven’t demonstrated enough I can’t believe you that’s a slander against God’s character we need to repent of that you need to believe Yahweh and worship Him bacon and don’t forget the flip side of this account God does perfectly provide for his people but for those who do not trust in him and persist in stubborn unbelief what’s their lot their lattes with the people of Jericho its total destruction and ruin holy judgement of God comes down upon there’s no middle ground blue God Jesus said you’re either for me or against me you either gather with me or you scatter in opposition to me Jericho we have a powerful reminder of the fate of all those who oppose God and his Messiah there’s no salvation apart from God walls will not save a healthy lifestyle will not save the schemes of the world will not save good works and rituals will not save all those who continue cysts on their own way continue to serve themselves state countable on what they want to do and rebell in their hearts against Yahweh they will be utterly destroyed just as we see in this passage and eternally punished so ask yourselves again which side of the Battle of Jericho do you want to be on this ancient battle is in some ways a shadowing of a battle that is to come a great battle of Armageddon on whose side do you want to be on the believers who conquered the city on the side of unbelievers whose defenses were overturned and perished in the city now one concept I’ve been thinking about lately it’s the idea of testing in these first five or six books of the Testament we see testing have been constantly and there are two ways that we can test God and we can talk about testing in terms of how we could tested by God but there’s also a way that we can test we can test God by unbelief that’s what Israel was doing that’s what the first generation of Israel was doing continually said Oh God why’d you do this why’d you bring us here and they weren’t willing to believe God how did God respond to that kind of testing it was patient at first but he said no more this is evil what you’re doing against me and it brings down my chase think of my judgment and we hear later on the scripture said we are not to test the Lord like the first generation not to test God with unbelief but there is a way that we are to test how’s that by belief now there’s a section in Malachi and much later in the scriptures or God I think it’s God tells the people who have been withholding their offerings from him he says test me in this sea I’m not willing to open the windows of heaven to rain down blessings on if you will obey he says I want you to test me but with belief so another question for you to ask yourself is how you testing are you testing God with belief unbelief when we test got one unbelief and risk his judgement we risk causing his patients to right now it’s a great agent well we test God by beliefs why don’t we see see God’s goodness you see God vindicated work is be in this perfect time is perfect way we see him vindicate we don’t have time for a last question I want to talk a little bit more about archeological evidence there is great corroboration of what the scripture says in a little time not recognized by most archaeologists today and the reason seems to be chronology a dates the destruction of Jericho LSL taunted 1550 BC where the Bible wouldn’t indicate that Jericho was destroyed around 1405 BC they say oh this can’t be Jericho or rather this can’t be the Bible can’t be accurate this is why I can’t trust the multiple but there are good reasons why there’s a discrepancy here number of possible isn’t it could be that telescope I was not really Jericho though it does seem like it is it may be that the dating methods were done incorrectly on the site and they need to be adjusted actually Jericho fell assaults on was first dated in its final to destruction rather its destruction layer to 1400 BC that was later revised so maybe maybe the revision was wrong well it might just be the same issue that we saw in the patterns of evidence exodus DVD that is they’ve dated it’s the right period but the whole kernel analogical system of periods needs to be adjusted to be a little technical the middle Bronze Age is the correct period but destruction tell us the time response to this it’s just that they’ve dated the middle Bronze Age too too early needs to be pushed a little bit late and so one way or another what the archaeologists say today does not really contradict the scripture so there’s a good explanation why they there’s a discrepancy whether archaeology is able to confirm it or not we know that the Scriptures are true Jericho was a great city but a wicked City it seemed like it could not fall but God made it fall and it was to be a testimony the Israel and to all of us the God is able to bring victory for those who believe in him but he will bring destruction on those who do not well that brings us to the end of our lesson today you have questions or comments please email me next week we proceed further into conquest we’re gonna overview the rest of Joshua’s campaigns and israel’s campaigns see how God continued to keep his promises to his faith-filled people thank you for your patience today’s we dealt with the audio difficulties let’s close in prayer and with your father we thank you for your word there’s another good word an encouraging word but a sobering word god I pray that we would not test you with unbelief thank you for your patience for us patience with us as we have done so but what’s wicked for us to do so god help us not to do so anymore but to believe you as this second generation of Israel did and wait for you to bring the victory in Jesus name Amen thank you again scene

    Israel Crosses the Jordan

Answers Bible Curriculum 2nd Edition Unit 7 Lesson 65

This week in Sunday school, we take a look at another momentous event at the beginning of Israel’s conquest of Canaan: the crossing of the Jordan River. Why would the Jordan River have been such a dangerous obstacle for the people of Israel? How did God miraculously provide for Israel’s crossing? And how is God’s command to memorialize the occasion instructive to us?

Our main text for this lesson is Joshua 3:1-4:24.

land of canaan they testify yahweh has indeed given us the land now today we look at the next step of israel’s conquest of canaan under yahweh under joshua and that is the crossing of the jordan river now when you hear this title or you think about this section of scripture you might be thinking as i did when i first came to this section uh is this really all that special i mean they’re just crossing a river i mean what’s the big deal but having actually studied the passage and the situation that israel faced i now see and hopefully you will as well just how critical the situation was for israel at this point crossing the jordan represented a dangerous if not impossible challenge for the people of israel and it could have derailed the entire conquest right at the start but as god had done previously with israel at the red sea or better the reed sea he would use this difficulty at the jordan to actually put his own power goodness and faithfulness on display and so as we look at this account today i trust that you will find encouragement for your own lies as you behold god’s promises to fight and provide for you as well they’re being displayed to israel but you have a similar promise from god those of you who are in christ so what did god accomplish for israel at the jordan well let’s pray and then we’ll find out heavenly father we thank you for your wonderful word and we thank you that you have brought us to yourself caused us to know jesus christ who is the sweetest treasure in all the universe lord i pray that we would know you in a greater way today that we would see your powerful hand and that it would encourage us embolden us lord to follow after you more fully more obediently pray you’d help me to explain this wonderful section of your word now in jesus name amen all right please take your bibles and open to joshua chapter 3.

joshua chapter 3 page 225 in the view bible if you’re using that one we’re picking up right where we left off last time in the book of joshua joshua 2 ends with the two spies coming back to joshua from jericho the armies and people of israel are currently on the eastern side of the jordan at this point on the plains of moab just opposite jericho now the full account of israel crossing the jordan river spans chapters 3 and 4 of joshua but we are going to just focus on the first half of it now we’ll look at joshua 3 verses 1 to 17.

make some observations then we’ll come back and look at the other side so follow along with me as i read chapter 3 of joshua that’s what the word says then joshua rose early in the morning he and all the sons of israel set out from shatim and came to the jordan and lodged there before they crossed at the end of three days the officers went through the midst of the camp and they commanded the people saying when you see the ark of the covenant of the lord that is yahweh your god with levitical priests carrying it and you shall set out from your place and go after it however there shall be between you and it a distance of about two thousand cubits by measure do not come near it that you may know the way by which you shall go for you have not passed this way before then joshua said to the people consecrate yourselves for tomorrow yahweh will do wonders among you and joshua spoke to the priest saying take up the ark of the covenant and cross over ahead of the people so they took up the ark of the covenant and went ahead of the people now yahweh said to joshua this day i will begin to exalt you in the sight of all israel that they may know that just as i have been with moses i will be with you you shall moreover command the priests who are carrying the ark of the covenant saying when you come to the edge of the waters of the jordan you shall stand still in the jordan then joshua said to the sons of israel come here and hear the words of yahweh your god joshua said by this you shall know that the living god is among you and he will assuredly dispossess from before you the canaanite the hittite the hivite the perizzite the gurgashite the amorite and the jebusite behold the ark of the covenant of the lord of all the earth is crossing over ahead of you into the jordan now then take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of israel one man for each tribe it shall come about when the souls of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of yahweh the lord of all the earth rest in the waters of the jordan the waters of the jordan will be cut off and the waters which are flowing down from above will stand in one heap so when the people set out from their tents to cross the jordan with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant before the people and when those who carried the ark came into the jordan and the feet of the priests carrying the ark were dipped in the edge of the water for the jordan overflows all its banks on the days of harvest the waters which are flowing down from above stood and rose up in one heap a great distance away at adam a city that is beside zerathan and those which were flowing down toward the sea of the arabah the salt sea were completely cut off so the people crossed opposite jericho and the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of yahweh stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the jordan while all israel crossed on dry ground to all the nation had finished crossing the jordan all right we’ve heard the first half of the account let’s make some basic observations of what we see in the passage notice in verses 1 to 2 that the people of israel set out and follow joshua to the edge of the jordan river but they do not cross immediately they stay at the water’s edge for about three days now during these three days israel would have gotten a good look at the jordan river and the potential crossing that they faced what would they have thought about what they saw let’s acquaint ourselves a little bit with some facts about the jordan river in ancient israel jordan river is the lowest river in the world in terms of elevation it sits at the bottom of a deep rift valley between modern israel and modern jordan you can see the little map i have there on the screen the greener the darker the green shows the lower the elevation and you can see there’s this really dark green section that’s the jordan valley the jordan rift valley jordan river flows basically north to south from mount hermon in the north into and out of the sea of galilee then it moves south through the jordan rift valley until the river empties into the dead sea now normally we might think of rivers as great opportunities for agriculture and the northern banks of the jordan river are pretty lush they can even look like jungle but the steep gradient of the jordan rift valley it prohibited using the jordan river in general as an as an irrigation system it didn’t really work that well for farming actually the land on the southern parts of the jordan river is pretty infertile pretty barren the jordan river in ancient times was not a great river averaging about 100 feet across and about as much as 10 feet deep however the river was pretty fast sometimes violent in its current which made boating up and down the river impossible river also floods annually expanding the river’s width and depth and the speed of its current now put yourselves into the shoes of an ancient israelite or ancient individual who encounters a river like the jordan and wants to go to the other side how might you try to cross a river what do you think bridge yes let’s look for a bridge right i mean this seems like the simplest solution let’s find a bridge now though in ancient times though somebody might fell a tree to put it across a little stream to get across bridges were actually pretty rare other than that little little log you used to get over a stream you’re not seeing that many bridges and apparently there was no bridge that was built across the jordan river until the 600s a.d so israel is not going to be able to use a bridge to cross the jordan how else might someone try to cross a river like the jordan river try swimming all right maybe you can swim across well it’s true that some people would have been able to swim across to jordan but unlike today most people in the ancient world did not know how to swim it’s not like after all they could just practice in their swimming pools in their backyard it’s true that some people could learn to swim and they were strong swimmers maybe some soldiers would be good at that but it’s swimming is not a great option for crossing a river when you’re traveling with a mixed group with a bunch of animals and a whole lot of possessions so the bridge option is out swimming is not really a good choice another way is you might simply go around all right we’re not going to cross the river we’ll just go around until we see a land passage across and this was the solution many times if you look at the trade routes and the roads through palestine in the ancient world you’ll see that they mostly avoid rivers they just go around but of course that takes time in israel if they tried to go around at this point well they’re going to be frustrated for a little while and so the only other option would be to look for a ford of course i’m not talking about a car you’re looking for a shallow place in the river where you can wade slash float across looking for a ford to get across the river now the jordan did have some forting sites some places that were shallow enough that you could walk across way through the water and some of these floating sites were actually right across from jericho hey that’s really great but joshua 315 informs us of a certain detail if you look at verse 15 of the past as we just read it says that the jordan overflows all its banks in the days of harvest or in other words the beginning of spring there are several times of harvest in israel but what this is indicating is that at the beginning of spring jordan enters flood stage and what time of year is it now currently for israel well we’ll see in chapter four but it’s even clearer in chapter five in joshua 5 10 soon after crossing the jordan israel will celebrate the passover passover takes place in the first month of the year first month of the year and in what season what season is passover it’s in the spring just as it is today so what does that mean a normally affordable spot in the jordan river is now not affordable at all even at these fords opposite jericho israel is looking at a river 10 to 12 feet deep and up to a mile wide now even for strong swimmers this crossing would be a challenge now i don’t know about you but when’s the last time or i don’t know about myself but for you when’s the last time you swam a mile in some of your clothes while dragging stuff on top of the water and with a child on your back and don’t forget the extra strong current which might sweep you and your child away so as issue waits pairs at the jordan’s edge they probably can’t help but notice that they showed up at the jordan river at an extremely inopportune time if the nation attempts a crossing now without divine help there’s a very strong possibility that some if not many people will drown and who is it who brought them to this place at exactly this time yahweh their god why would god do this perhaps people mold over this question as they waited but notice we don’t see any complaining in the text and notice the command given by the officers the people in verses two to four they say that the people are to set out and follow whenever they see the covered ark pass before them whoever they are to keep their distance from the ark they had to follow two thousand cubits behind which had been more than half a mile behind sir stay back they need to see which way they ought to go arc’s gonna show them now these marching orders are unique compared to how israel would normally move about according to numbers 10 the people usually traveled with the ark in the middle of their company also the ark was normally carried by levites from the family of kohath but this time the ark is going before everyone and who’s carrying the ark here the priests levitical priests are carrying the ark and remember what does the ark serve as it is a container for the the ten commandments the testimony that’s true but how else does the ark serve a purpose right right this is the place where god has chosen to manifest his presence even meet with his people and this ark this place of god’s presence is going to go before all the people now you can imagine this unique set of orders producing some expectation in the people of israel were to follow the ark where are we going how will the ark lead to our crossing this jordan river notice the additional commands given by joshua in verse 5. 5 tells the people to consecrate themselves that is wash yourselves refrain from any activity that might make you ceremonially unclean why joshua says because tomorrow yahweh will do wonders among you it doesn’t say what those wonders are but he says they’re coming you can imagine again the people what what wonders will yahweh do will he bring us across to jordan through some supernatural act then verse 7 yahweh speaks with joshua and says more about what’s happened what’s about to happen yahweh says joshua i’m about to exalt you joshua in the eyes of all the people people will know that i am with you just as i was with moses and you will receive divine affirmation as leader of israel again god doesn’t say specifically how it’s going to happen again so again this declaration will lead to questions what is it that yahweh will do to bring about this great affirmation now are you noticing how the text is leading us on as we move to this narrative it’s giving us some information but not giving us the full information this is a classic literary way to bring about tension or drama or expectation in the reader or listener it probably produced tension in the original people who experienced this event they’re hearing these words from joshua they’re hearing these words from yahweh and they say okay i know a little bit now but i don’t know the full story what’s going to happen what will yahweh do will he really bring us across and i point this out to you because this building of tension actually just increases as we go through the account when we look at verses 10 to 12 we see the same thing with what joshua expresses to the people look at verse 10 joshua enhances the drama by saying look israel by what’s about to happen you will know that the living god is among you now living god as opposed to what kind of god dead god a lifeless god an empty god a fake god who had empty gods who weren’t able to do anything people of the land the people that israel was going to fight against and to conquer and to judge he says but we have a living god and you’re gonna see that and what’s about to happen okay so what’s about to happen or he says also in verse 10 by what’s about to happen you will know that god will surely dispossess the inhabitants of the land for you wow that’s that’s wonderful what is it that yahweh is going to do to confirm our coming victory verse 11. he says the ark of the covenant is going ahead of you into the jordan into the jordan how can the ark of god go into the jordan and stay intact and then verse 12 he says select one man from each each of the tribes of israel for what joshua doesn’t say what are these 12 men going to need to do and this anticipation increases again when we reach verse 13 joshua even plainly says what will happen it says when the priest’s feet enter the jordan river waters flowing from the north they will be cut off and stand in one heap really joshua god will do that is this really going to happen imagine as the people were going to sleep that night they had maybe a hard time sleeping because they’re just anticipating what’s going to happen the next day and also notice the title that yahweh heard that joshua uses for yahweh in verse 13 he refers to him as the lord of all the earth again that title is opposed to what kind of lord right some local god a god of a certain area or even the god who has a jurisdiction over only part of creation he’s the god of the sky or he’s the god of the plains or he’s the god of this river that’s what many of the people’s gods were in the land that israel was going to conquer but he says yahweh is the lord of all the earth not just some local area not just some people not just one particular part of creation he is the lord of all the sovereign of all let me see one last section of build up in verses 14 to 15.

even when we’re having the report of what’s happening notice we still get this big chunk of explanatory material before we actually hear the action one more explanation of the circumstances right before the miracle before we see it and then we do see it in verse 16 the waters indeed are made up to stand are made to stand up as a heap and they are completely cut off it says notice where the water stack up north toward the city of adam which was probably about 19 miles upstream now the specific preposition used with the city adam is a bit unclear in the hebrew it could be from adam or at adam new american standard goes with at adam as as most modern translations do from adam would mean that the israelites would actually have been able to see the waters stack up from where they were all the way towards the city of adams so basically from adam from where that city was probably 19 miles north you would have seen the water stacking up all the way to where israel was and this would be reminiscent of israel’s experience at the red sea where they saw the water stacked up on each side as they crossed so front and atom is possible at adam is also possible that if it indeed is at adam it would mean that the israelites wouldn’t have seen the water stack up because 19 miles away is too far for the eye to see but they surely would have noticed the waters being cut off all the water between where they were and the city of adam would have just disappeared and that would have given them plenty of room to cross the riverbed but either way either way the preposition shakes out under verse 16 says all israel crosses the jordan and verse 17 notes that the people with the ark the priests they stand firm with the ark while the people cross but notice something else that verse 17 expresses what is the condition of the ground as the people cross this is dry ground and is ground normally dry when water ceases flowing across it of course not instead it is muddy and wet and troublesome but here we’re told twice about this ground the priest stood on dry ground and the people crossed on dry ground so here we finish observations on the first part of the account and we normally turn to interpretations at this point but let’s hold off on that until we hear the rest of the account because chapter 4 is going to fill in some details about the crossing which we haven’t heard yet especially details about how the crossing ends so look over at chapter 4 now chapter 4 verses 1 to 24 and we’ll finish we’ll finish looking at the narrative and make more observations on it so joshua 4 follow along with me as i read now when all the nation had finished crossing the jordan yahweh spoke to joshua saying take for yourselves 12 men from the people one man from each tribe command them saying take up for yourselves 12 stones from here out of the middle of the jordan from the place where the priest’s feet are standing firm carry them over there carry them over with you and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge tonight so joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of israel one man from each tribe and joshua said to them cross against the ark of yahweh your god into the middle of the jordan and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder according to the number of the tribes of the sons of israel let this be a sign among you so when your children ask later saying what do these stones mean to you and you shall say to them cuz the waters of the jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of yahweh when it crossed the jordan the waters of the jordan were cut off so these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of israel forever thus the sons of israel did as joshua commanded and took up twelve stones from the middle of the jordan just as yahweh spoke to joshua according to the number of the tribes the sons of israel and they carried them over with them to the lodging place and put them down there then joshua set up 12 stones in the middle of the jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing and they are there to this day for the priests who carried the ark were standing in the middle of the jordan until everything was completed that yahweh had commanded joshua to speak to the people according to all that moses had commanded joshua and the people hurried and crossed and when all the people had finished crossing the ark of yahweh and the priests crossed before the people the sons of reuben and the sons of god and the half tribe of vanessa crossed over in battle array before the sons of israel just as moses had spoken to them about forty thousand equipped war crossed for battle before yahweh to the desert plains of jericho on that day yahweh exalted joshua in the sight of all israel so that they revered him just as they had revered moses all the days of his life now yahweh said to joshua command the priests who carry the ark of the testimony that they come up from the jordan so joshua commanded the priest saying come up from the jordan it came about when the priest who carried the ark of the covenant of yahweh had come up from the middle of the jordan that the souls of the priest’s feet were lifted up to the dry ground that the waters of the jordan returned to their place and went over all its banks as before now the people came up from the jordan on the 10th of the first month and camped at gilgal on the eastern edge of jericho those 12 stones which they had taken from the jordan joshua set up at gilgal it said to the sons of israel when your children ask their fathers in time to come saying what are these stones and you shall inform your children saying israel cross this jordan on dry ground for yahweh your god dried up the waters of the jordan before you until you had crossed just as yahweh your god had done to the red sea which he dried up before us until we had crossed that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of yahweh is mighty so that you may fear yahweh your god forever all right let’s observe some more details from this second chapter when israel finishes crossing notice what is it that causes the river to return to its place verses 15 to 18 make clear that it’s precisely when the priest’s feet leave the riverbed and return to the normal dry land at joshua’s command that the waters return actually this this corresponds to how the waters dissipated in the first place the souls of the feet of the priests they touch the water and the waters retreated and then when the soles of the feet of the priest left the riverbed and touched the dry land the waters returned notice in verse 10 we have this little remark that all the people crossed quickly so this is not a crossing that took several days israel had taken time to prepare beforehand and they certainly did not dawdle now probably also the same way they crossed the red sea they didn’t doddle so a million plus people they cross this river in one day probably in a matter of hours now look at verses 12 to 13. we have details about certain soldiers from the tribe of god reuben and the half tribe of manasseh given to us maybe saying uh isn’t that kind of random what’s going on with these two and a half tribes well this note will sound random and confusing if we’re not aware of what took place with israel after they conquered the two amorite kingdoms on the east side of the jordan this is some details we can go through together in our previous lessons but we’ll talk about it now in the aftermath of those conquests two and a half tribes the ones mentioned here they actually asked if they could have their inheritance on the eastern side of the jordan hey this is a good land moses do you mind if we actually set up our permanent homes here moses was the first angry when he heard this request he says how dare you ask this you’re discouraging israel from going over into the land of canaan you’re saying ah let’s just live on the eastern side and you’re not willing to go and fight with the rest of israel to obtain the land promised by god but the men from these tribes reuben god and manasseh they said no no moses you don’t understand we’re totally willing to go with you and to conquer the rest of the land but is it okay if we settle here now we’ll send men we’ll set up our families here but we’ll send our soldiers to go with you no no we’re not trying to discourage the people at all and so with these promises confirmed moses was mollified and he agreed all right ruben gab half tribal manasseh you can settle on this side make sure make sure you send your soldiers with the rest of people and so we see those terms being fulfilled here forty thousand from these two and a half tribes cross over with the rest of israel now these tribes had more men than this you know we learned this from actually the second census given in numbers 26 they had a lot more men than this but presumably some of their soldiers are going to need to stay behind some of their fighting men will need to stay behind to guard the women and children who are now living on the eastern side of the jordan but a good portion of the fighting men they go with the rest of israel and they cross the jordan here now going back to passage you look at verses 1 to 7 we finally see what those 12 men from the different tribes were chosen for each was to take up a stone from the jordan riverbed as a memorial now these were no pebbles mind you verse verse 5 says that each man will take a stone upon his shoulder so these are some decent-sized rocks here if you gotta stick them on your shoulder and notice where these stones are to be placed god says put them at where you launch and here in verses 19 to 24 where that is specifically at gilgal a place near jericho precise location of gilgal is not known there is another gilgal in the bible but it’s apparently different from this one this one seems to be somewhere near jericho between the jordan river and jericho notice though this isn’t the only memorial verses 9-10 clarifies that joshua set up another memorial in the middle of the jordan right where the priests were standing with the ark of the covenant takes 12 stones puts them there probably stack those stones on top of each other and when the waters return over the jordan it’s likely that these water that this monument wouldn’t have been seen at least not at flood stage but when the the water level had gone lower and the ford site was returned to normal then these rocks would indeed have been exposed and say ah those are the rocks that joshua set up as loyal to what god did here now notice for whom these memorials are to be instructive verse 7 refers to the sons of israel so that would be all people but who especially is in mind with these memorial stones that’s right the next generation the children those who were not old enough to comprehend what’s happening here and those who are not yet even born verse 6 verse 21 say that primarily these memorials are for the people to come for the children and notice that these stones they don’t simply commemorate israel crossing the jordan but specifically that it was yahweh who accomplished it for his people verse 7 the first description of what these memorial stones are supposed to do joshua says these are to remind you and your teach your children how the waters were cut off when the ark of the covenant of yahweh went into the waters it was all about the ark it was all about the one who resided in the ark and verse 23 it says yahweh dried up the waters of the jordan this isn’t something that we merely muscled our way through or accomplishing our own ingenuity this was yahweh’s work and we want to remember that they also noticed in verse 23 and 24 it kind of strange pronoun choice he says teach the later generations about what happened when they crossed the jordan that is you he refers to them with you and that’s maybe a little strange because they wait but they weren’t there at least some of these people some of these kids weren’t even born yet how could you say oh yeah this is when you cross the jordan this is a memorial to that time what yahweh did how can he say you well this is actually a common kind of expression in the old testament and it’s emphasizing the solidarity of the people of israel what god did in a generation past was in a way done for and even experienced by all the later generations too happened to one part of israel in a sense it happened to all the parts of israel even those to come and with these memorials it’s like god wants the later generations to be transported back and even experiencing the great moment of deliverance for themselves so with these memorials it’s like the people will be telling their children even though you weren’t there in a sense you need to be transported back to that time see yourself at the jordan river look at these stones listen to what listen to what happened and in a sense you will see that you crossed over the jordan too god did this for you even you who were born later speaking of the past and present notice the connection joshua makes in verse 23 said god’s drawing up the waters of the jordan so the israel could cross was just like what other events crossing the red sea or crossing the reed c and then notice finally there are realized purposes that are expressed in this section certain messages are being announced loud and clear through what’s happened here with jordan with the jordan river and with israel what messages does god communicate in this crossing verse 14 there’s a message given to all israel joshua is indeed yahweh’s chosen leader he has exalted joshua yahweh will be with him therefore you are to revere joshua that message comes loud and clear through here it was joshua who led this crossing he’s the one who commanded the people to do what they did and yahweh accomplished it all through joshua but there’s also the messages in verse 24 to all israel they are shown that they should revere and trust yahweh who is their great god but also it says to all the peoples of the earth a message is conveyed always hand is mighty yahweh’s hand is mighty to so easily dispatch the waters away and then bring back it’s nothing for yahweh and he’s the god of israel all the peoples of the earth would hear about this see this what would be their reaction hopefully it is also to fear yahweh and actually we see whether the other nations got this memo in the first verse of the next chapter just peek over to joshua five verse one notice what it says there it says now came about when all the kings the amorites who were beyond the jordan to the west and all the kings the canaanites were by the sea heard how yahweh had dried up the waters of the jordan before the sons of israel until they had crossed that their hearts melted and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the sons of israel so they’re seeing they’re seeing the message they’re hearing the message loud and clear yahweh’s hand is mighty and it is active it is being put forth on behalf of god’s people israel well now that we’ve observed the second part of the narrative let’s now talk interpretation ask a number of questions here going back to chapter three both the way the event takes place and the way it’s retold it emphasizes the drama and it works to build tension why why would the event itself and the retelling of it emphasize tension what do you think i might just think hey this is good storytelling and it is if you wanted to be a good storyteller you would do things just like this but this is not merely done to be interesting this is not merely because god like thinks god sometimes to make things dramatic rather this underscores emphasizes the magnitude of what was really being accomplished by god here by building the excitement by building the anticipation it shows your god is really that great and what he accomplished was truly amazing it also i think highlights that this was a bit of a test for the people of israel they didn’t have all the information at first they got little hints of it and more and more as they went along but how are they going to respond to it you know tension is kind of a funny word that it can be both negative and positive sometimes you can be under tension because you’re afraid of what’s going to happen oh i don’t know what’s going to happen i’m it’s uncertain that you’re on the edge of your seat in a bad way but there’s also a positive kind of tension that’s that kind of excitement where you say oh wow i don’t know what’s going to happen but it’s going to be amazing i can’t wait to see it israel kind of face the choice how are they going to respond to this tension it’s a testing of their faith also this especially in the retelling this this effort to produce drama intention anticipation it’s part of drawing listeners and readers back into the moment to have them experience it for themselves look it was dramatic when it first happened and so the way i’m going to tell it is going to re-emphasize that drama because i want you the author says i want you to experience it for yourself see yourself at the jordan river take your imagine yourself in the shoes of the people of israel not knowing what’s going to happen but hearing that yahweh will do wonders as part of transporting the people back this is done on purpose as i said this was though a kind of test for the people of israel how do they fare in this test they do well they they demonstrate faith and obedience to yahweh what you’re like huh because at this point we’re so used to being like oh israel tested again oh they failed israel tested they failed israel but here they don’t what this is truly shocking maybe there really is something different about this second generation of israel they believe yahweh maybe they will indeed inherit the land they will accomplish the conquest just as yahweh said because they believe the lord this is wonderful news this is a great sign of what’s to come and we’ll we’ll see more of that kind of faith being confirmed now a question on a different note some have noted that seismic disturbances in this area have produced rock slides that would cut off the flow of the jordan river i mean the jordan rift valley is part of a huge seismic fault and so there’s a lot of activity there a lot of seismic activity even earthquakes rock slides so how do we know whether the text is really describing something miraculous or it’s actually just a natural event maybe a rock slide took place cut off the waters of the jordan and that’s how israel was able to cross how do we know whether this was merely natural versus miraculous what do you think right the details of the account show us this has to be miraculous and you pointed out one of them and that is the timing of the priest’s feet moving and the water’s retreating or returning that doesn’t happen naturally you can’t pull off a timing like that what else in the account emphasizes this had to be miraculous exactly right right exactly roy has with the red sea crossing they’re crossing on dry ground this is not normal even if there was a seismic disturbance in a rock slide you’re not going to have dry ground you’re not going to be able to cross over in a matter of hours the details show us this has to be miraculous also the waters said are said to be standing up in a great heap that doesn’t happen naturally there’s comparison to the red sea crossing it’s called a series of wonders by joshua the day before yahweh says he’s going to exalt joshua in the eyes of the people by what he does is a rock slide really going to accomplish all those things is that not going to be easily explained away as just a fortunate coincidence how’s that going to point to the mighty hand of yahweh or show that joshua is special especially chosen leader by yahweh no this is this is not really natural this is the mighty hand of yahweh at work just as it had done previously at the red sea now what is the significance of the ark going first said this is not normal why is it significant that’s right and remember isn’t this what god literally promised the people of israel it says look you’re coming to the land of canaan but i’m going before you to prepare the way for you and to give the people of the land into your hand and with this dramatic dangerous scene where israel is at the jordan river in flood stage yahweh again he emphasizes look i’m the one who goes before you i’m the one who’s accomplishing this for you now there’s no special power in the ark itself but as the symbol of god’s presence it’s appropriate that the ark goes before the people and it’s the priest standing with the ark that causes the water to proceed because really it’s yahweh doing it it’s yahweh stepping in a sense into the jordan and the waters flee from him because he is the mighty god this is emphasized by this special direction to have the ark go first and just as the waters parted for yahweh so the people of the land would melt away as israel entered the land excuse me and went into battle now at this point we’ve seen a lot of parallels with what god has done here at the jordan with what god did previously at the reed sea what is the significance sorry there’s the frog in my throat now what is the significance of god doing the same powerful miracle essentially the same miracle at the beginning of israel’s journey through the wilderness and at the end why is that significant um okay so you said a number of interesting things there uh you pointed out how this is a different generation and i think that’s certainly part of what’s going on here i’m really sorry about my throat that is the first generation they have died off and maybe there are some in the second generation who were alive at the red sea crossing but they would have been young some that wouldn’t have necessarily understood what was going on or they didn’t remember it that well and some weren’t even there at all but with the second generation experiencing that same mighty miracle that would have brought to their minds an even more vivid depiction of how they can trust their mighty god to bring them into the land and bring them into the conquest there is um uh kind of like a restatement of the of the picture a a reminder a another vivid example for the next generation of what god had provided before so i think that’s certainly part of the answer uh roy what were you gonna say hmm mm-hmm right yeah so this was as you’re saying before a powerful testimony to a new generation but it also um to refer to some things you just said roy in some ways it does complete the time that the people had in the wilderness it began with god doing this miraculous work to provide for the people and it ends with a similar work to provide for the people to pave the way before them and to even follow behind them and i think as you said roy it’s very very true he’s emphasizing this is all this has all been my work from beginning to end i started this i finished this and i’m gonna keep doing it for you as you go into the land of canaan this emphasizes that their god also does not change he’s the same powerful god he’s the same faithful god i can do it for one generation i can do it for another generation it’s not like i used up all my power the first time with that watery crossing i can do the same thing again easily of course this would encourage the people of israel as they they face what could have been seen as a monumental task and that is overcoming the people of the land taking all their strong cities and utterly destroying them as god had commanded them to do yeah i think there are other things we can say uh all right dwayne yeah why don’t you give me give me something else hmm yeah great point duane uh we do see that parallel on both accounts this is part of god exalting showing that the people need to revere god’s chosen leader moses with the first crossing joshua with the second crossing and both of them were instrumental in their different crossings moses was the one who was raising his hand raising the staff and that was part of god now god used that as to cause the waters to part and to come back the same thing with joshua he gives the command the priests move and the waters depart or they return certainly i think another thing we can say is that it emphasizes that no enemy can stand against yahweh or the people of israel because remember what happened at the first crossing not just though the waters were parted but the pharaoh the army of pharaoh was destroyed utterly there’s no army here in the second parting but there is an army that’s about to be faced at jericho and the rest of canaan so just as the army was annihilated in the first instance so god chose the armies that you’re about to face have nothing on you they will not be able to stand against you look i’m able to part the sea and you remember the last time i parted the sea how i destroyed your enemies also and all this would have been a great encouragement to the people of israel as they faced the task before them they don’t just have the encouragement from rahab the report from jericho that the people are in fear of israel and of their god but they also see the this this vivid picture of yahweh’s power over the waters the significance that moses had that god used him and worked through him to perpetrate certain things right and which allowed the people to have faith in him to know that he was being he was he was being used by god right yeah that was a point that dwayne was just emphasizing and that would be important for the people as they go through the conquest they not just had to needed to trust yahweh and in his power but they needed to respect yahweh’s leader because joshua was going to lead them through the entire conquest or at least the the the main phase of it so yeah that would be important for the people now here’s a here’s another question more on the second part of the account why does his account emphasize memorial so much he says you need to you need to set up these memorials and you need to be prepared to instruct why why are memorials so important why would the people need in their memorials and a memorial like this would help them to remember that god was working with for them and with them right yeah as you’re saying roy there’s a there’s a very strong tendency for the people to forget god and what he had done dwayne were you going to say something else throughout the history of israel god didn’t always do the miraculous events that you know continually in the lives of the people throughout the hundreds of years you know that they were in existence there um and so there may be times where there’s really no miraculous events taking place but uh memorial serves as an event to bring them back to god is a god of you know miraculous yeah that’s a great point dwayne not every time is god going to do this stunning miracle but god is always with his people and god is always working for his people sometimes it’s through unseen means sometimes it’s just the normal providential means but by emphasizing and taking time to memorialize and remember these special instances it shows them you can trust them when you don’t see the special things and as you were saying roy there’s a tendency to forget even these wonderful acts of god and so the memorials were part of redirecting their minds toward what they needed to remember and of course that’s not just true in the days of israel that’s also true today right we have a tendency to forget the mighty works of god we have a tendency to forget the greatness of god and we need our minds constantly redirected towards god and the things of god we need the constant encouragement of remembering who god is and what he has done because we have a plenty of forces working against that we just have the weakness of our flesh the sinfulness of our flesh the false ideas of the world the evil one himself all these things trying to say no no no don’t think about that think about think about these physical things that are right in front of you or maybe you can’t trust what god said and so we do need our minds constantly redirected to the lord and to what he has done and that is accomplished via memorials yeah danny to have something visual we can see god’s god’s being gracious to us he’s giving us a visible sign i think this is our faith we see that in the uh in the new covenant sign the lord suffering right we’re having today right yeah increases our faith reminds us of the great work god has done that’s right i think that’s so true danny it’s just also simply encouraging even if we um even if we weren’t forgetting seeing something visible we can say that that is a sign of what god has done that that is encouraging to us and that spurs us forward one last question to ask here what is the purpose of this account why did joshua write this because remember the context of the book of joshua this is written by joshua completed at the end of his life for a generation that didn’t didn’t necessarily participate in the conquest at the end of his life joshua has gathered all israel together the conquest is complete but there’s some mop-up operations that have to be done the individual tribes have to finish conquering their areas because god said i’m not going to take them out all at once because you wouldn’t be able to fill all the land but i’ll take out a large section of it you’ll have essentially gained the land and then you just finish it up well josh was talking to the people as they’re looking at these mop up operations in the future and he writes this account why what’s the purpose i think you can see that it ties in directly with what’s stated in the account what was this crossing meant to do it was to show everyone the mighty hand of god and so that god’s people would fear their god i remember we say fear we’re not talking about simply that craven fear that says oh no i better do the right thing or god’s gonna smite me you should fear the power and even the holiness of god and be aware of his chastening ability but the fear idea in the old testament and even the new testament has the idea of reverence that love and trust that regard for the greatness of god that causes you to follow him to seek him to obey him that’s what israel was to do and that’s what the later generations were to do all right you weren’t there at the at the crossing of the jordan river but in a way you were and they need to be transported back there because you have a task to do as well you need to finish the conquest it was finished in a sense but you’ve got a task set before you too you need to realize the same thing that the people at the jordan river were realizing that the hand of yahweh is mighty on behalf of his people of course that’s not just true for them but that’s true for us too right this is the main application of our text it’s stated for us in the text we need to realize the mighty hand of god so that we would fear our god you know it’s interesting water is often associated in the bible with chaos even evil you might remember at the beginning of genesis it says the earth was formless and void and the spirit of god hovered over the waters waters kind of associated with this unfinished this disorderly state and if you just observe water today it’s just moving about especially when it’s stormy or windy thrashing about it seems out of control all this power out of control but what do we see yahweh doing again and again and again in the scriptures establishing his power over the waters even the winds and the waves obey the voice of yahweh he says hush be still he established their borders and he says you can’t come forward beyond this and they come to that spot and then they retreat because yahweh is sovereign over all the earth even the mighty and chaotic waters and of course we see this emphasize the new testament as well our lord jesus established his authority over the waters and if our god commands the winds and the waves and they obey him if he can banish the waters of the jordan and then call them back then is he not able to take care of us is he not able to fulfill all the words that he has spoken to us as he had done to israel so a few questions for you to think about along those lines we don’t have time to go through these questions in full today but think we’re not the people of israel we don’t have a an actual military crusade to accomplish on god’s behalf so what should be holding the great power the mighty hand of god encourage us to do well just as the generations after the generation of joshua had their special calling to fulfill so do we we’ve been called by god to make disciples fight the good fight of faith pursue holiness serve the church how are we going to be able to do this through the mighty hand of god will it be difficult sometimes but we face situations that look insurmountable yes but is the mighty hand of god with us and we will also face trials we’ll face times where we say oh lord this is hard things are not going well just as and this really goes into my second question god brought the people of israel twice to a site of watery danger where it looked like there was no deliverance they brought them to the red sea backed them into a corner and we brought them to the jordan river where it looked like there was no way to cross without people drowning why did he do that so he could deliver in a mighty way it’s the same thing for our lives we so often fall into the light version of the prosperity gospel where we say oh if i just obey yahweh if i stay in the word if i go to church if i serve if i do all the right things then life will go well with me and many times you will be blessed even in your life because you follow yahweh but you know what things are sometimes just not going to go well for you even when you do everything right don’t be surprised when that happens don’t say oh what ah i thought no don’t say that remember what god did with israel he brought them into times of difficulty challenge and danger why that the people would learn to trust him that they would persevere in that time of testing it would grow in faith and then you would provide the mighty deliverance at the right time so it will be with you and in your lives you’re gonna face difficulty even when you do everything right even sometimes because you’re doing what’s right but god says trust endure persevere i will vindicate you at the right time and for many of us that’s only going to be fully accomplished when we when we die when we see the lord and you’ll say well done good and faithful servant you were faithful with the little things even when it wasn’t going well for you now i will put you in charge of many things one final question what are ways that we can make or use spiritual memorials as i said we need that same kind of reminding that remembrance of yahweh in his works today so how can we make use of memorials let’s not forget the biggest memorial we have which is the word of god memorials don’t have to be always physical they can be written so we need to pay attention to the word read it talk about it memorize it sing it even sing and memorize christian songs participate in the lord’s supper and baptism just as danny was referring to before these are signs of memorial even visible to help us recall and appreciate what yahweh has done and who he is steady also church history it’s not like yahweh’s mighty work just stopped in at the end of the bible no he’s been continuing to work you can see the testimonies of people from the past and what god did in the world and how he had mercy and how he showed forth his power now as he changed hearts look at the biographies of missionaries and pastors and faithful mothers and other great men and women of faith consider your own testimony share your testimony look for opportunities just in everyday life to teach and remind your children about yahweh and his ways of course holidays birthday parties are all part of that but every day there are little things that we can use to remind ourselves of what the scripture says about our great god so we need to remember i think it’s so telling that one of the commands were given in the new testament is to remember jesus christ you think like how am i going to forget jesus christ but you know what the flesh is weak enough that yeah you can forget even jesus christ maybe not forget his name but forget who he is forget what he’s done fail to appreciate him fail to live in light of it so we need these memorials we need to make use of them create them and also take advantage of the ones that we already have been given now that’s all the time we have for this week if you have questions or comments about what we looked at today please feel free to email me next week we see israel’s unstoppable god the mighty hand of yahweh bring down the walls of jericho look forward to talking about that with you let’s close in prayer heavenly father you are mighty and you say that you are on our side rather you brought us onto your side you’re our strong tower you are our mighty deliverer so even if all the world is against us god we know that we don’t have to fear if you can banish the waters of the jordan you can take care of us if you can pave the way for the people of visual to cross this roiling stream this river god you can take care of us so i pray that the people who have heard this message today those at calvary that they would trust you trust your mighty hand cling to you even in the times of testing and that you would vindicate their faith i praise you bless the rest of their time of worship today jesus amen i thank you all see you again next

    Rahab Helps the Spies

Answers Bible Curriculum 2nd Edition Unit 7 Lesson 64

This week in Sunday school, we look at how Joshua sends spies into Jericho and how God helps Israel via a very surprising person: a Canaanite prostitute. Why did Rahab welcome the spies? Was it right for her to lie to protect them? And what was God showing Israel and us today about his great salvation using Rahab? We’ll consider these questions and more.

Our main text for this lesson is Joshua 2:1-24.

all right well good morning everyone welcome back to Sunday school good to see you we’re looking at another kind of transition today we are coming to the end of our time in the Torah we’ve been in the first five books of the Bible for a while but we’re actually moving on to the book of Joshua today and we are going to be in the book of Joshua for the rest of our lesson unit so about the next six lessons or so this means that we start talking today about Israel’s conquest of Canaan proper last time we heard about how God prepared the way for Israel’s conquest we saw how God brought the people to the eastern side of the Jordan River he caused the people under Moses to vanquish two powerful amirite kingdoms and even turned one prophets attempt to curse Israel into a time of prophetic blessing on Israel so before the conquest has even begun the conquest proper God has made clear that his purposes for Israel his purposes involving Israel will not be stopped they will come to pass but will God still show favor to Israel when there’s a change in leadership because at this point because of Moses is sin at Meribah God has forbidden Moses from entering the promised land is instead called Moses his helper Joshua to lead Israel into the land and begin the conquest so would God still be with Israel under Joshua God had a special relationship with Moses Moses interceded for the lives of the people multiple times what God still show favor with Joshua we’re going to see the answer to that question over the next few lessons but we begin to see it today because God is in the text that we look at going to continue to prepare the way for Israel in an extremely surprising fashion God has a special agent that will act on Israel’s behalf and who is this special agent it is a Canaanite a woman a prostitute and a liar and yet not only would God use this woman Rahab and a critical way for Israel but she would also be an example of God’s grace and the life-changing effect of faith for all people of all time so let’s learn today about Rahab and how she helps the spies of Israel and let’s pray before we go on Heavenly Father we thank you for this account it is very hope giving account lord I pray that you help me to bill explain it well help us to appreciate the impact of just what a great God you are and how you demonstrate that whether Rahab in the spies in Jesus name Amen I please take your Bibles and open to Joshua chapter 2 Joshua chapter 2 and that will be page 224 for using the Pew Bible Joshua chapter 2 let me give you a little bit more reminders on the specific context of this account at this point Moses that great prophet and deliverer of God has died after giving a final exposition of God’s law to the second generation of Israel on the plains of Moab the plains of Moab that would be on the eastern side of the Jordan opposite the Fords that actually are on the way to Jericho now this exposition this last sermon of Moses is written down for us in the book of Deuteronomy after that sermon God led Moses up to the top of Mount Nebo where God granted Moses a supernaturally assisted look of all the land that God was finally about to give to Israel and then Moses died and was buried by God in an unknown location buried by God himself but now Joshua leads Israel and in Joshua chapter 1 got Commission’s and encourages Joshua to lead Israel into Canaan and he specifically charges Joshua to know and pay close attention to all the law of God as given by Moses people of Israel proclaim their support their loyalty to Joshua and they urge him just as God urged him to be strong and courageous this leads us to the beginning of chapter 2 where we look into the account and we’re gonna start just by reading the first seven verses of chapter 2 Joshua 2 verses 1 to 7 follow along with me as I read Word of God says then Joshua the son of nun sent you meant as spies secretly from Satine saying go view the land especially Jericho so they went and came into the house a harlot whose name was Rahab and lodged there it was told the king of Jericho saying behold men and the sons of Israel have came here tonight to search out the land and the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab saying bring out the men who have come to you who have entered your house or they have come to search out all the land but the woman had taken the two men and hidden them and she said yes the man came to me but I did not know where they were from it came about when it was time to shut the gate at dark that the men went out I do not know where the men went pursue them quickly for you will overtake them but she had brought them up to the roof and hidden him in the stalks of the flax stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof so the men pursued them on the road to the Jordan to the Fords and as soon as those who were pursuing them had gone out they shut the gate all right let’s pause here in our understanding of the account so we could just make some basic observations before crossing the Jordan River and actually entering Cain and Joshua sends out two spies and notice their mission given to us in verse one they are to view the land especially Jericho they find a place to stay in Jericho the house of a harlot or prostitute named Rahab in verse two however word reaches the king that these two Israelite spies are at Rahab’s house and so in verse three he orders Rahab to deliver the men over but how does Rahab respond she tells the tale she missed the men came to her do you search she did not know they were Israelites she says the men left through the city gate at dark and she does not know where they went but she encourages the King to pursue them meanwhile according to verse six Rahab has actually brought the spies to her roof and hidden them in stalks of flax back then flax that have been used for linen clothing would be first soaked in water and then dried in the Sun so she probably hid the spies underneath these stalks of drawing flax so she says one thing to the king but she really knows what the spies are which means her story to the king is really a way it’s a lie maybe partly true but it’s a lie but as a result of this tall tale notice the Kings directions or the King spies I’m sorry the Kings meant they pursue the spies by going east east from Jericho toward the Jordan along the road to the main crossing point affords of the Jordan River and who would be on the other side of the Jordan at this crossing point the people of Israel that makes sense that the King would pursue the spies in this direction now with these basic observations let’s ask some interpretation questions might find it odd that the Israelites these two spies they take lodging in a harlots house but surely they did not do so for an impure purpose why Lodge with a prostitute but in name that’s where transient people could go unnoticed all right this is a place where they can hopefully catch as little attention as possible house of ill-repute or a house or people who are just coming and going can go it would be a place it’d be a perfect place for spies to hide and so they figured all right let’s stay here it’s also possible that since we learned later on her house was on the edge of the city actually in the city wall that it would serve as a convenient place of escape if they really needed to get away so it was a very strategic choice to stay at Rahab’s house nevertheless God made it so that the spies were discovered Rahab lies about the Israelites being in her house but her lie was very significant everyone knew that these spies would be in the city for one main reason what would be coming later if the spies were already there yeah to invade the land to conquer Jericho so the situation was very dire for the king and the people of Jericho to protect the city from the Israelites it was vital the nd Israelite spies be discovered apprehended and probably executed it all being the name was saving the city but Rahab protects the spies so by protecting the spies what had Rahab decided about purse she knew was going to be destroyed yeah go ahead do you say well or attack or at least attack she knew that the city would be attacked and I think you’re even right to say she knew that it would be conquered she’s throwing her laden with the Israelites in fact we could even say she’s really turning her back on the city this is not her merely hedging her bets you see gray hab was not really just lying here she was committing treason she’s separating herself from her Gentile people her Canaanite people she’s distant distancing herself from their way of life and she’s decided to stand with the Hebrews does this remind you of anyone else that we’ve seen in the Torah the midwife the midwives to certain extent but also Moses is a man who was raised among the Gentiles he knew all their education in their culture but what does Hebrew say about Moses he considered the treasures of Christ or he’s considered Christ and the rewards of Christ greater than all the treasures of Egypt and decided to stand with his brethren who were slaves rather than continue in Pharaoh’s household we say Rahab going through a similar process here she decides to turn her back on her people and stand with Israel and in doing so she saves the lives the spies who come to her but it’s part of this process Rahab tells a lie was her lie wrong was it righteous was it excusable now we’ve talked about the issue of lying and righteous lies when we talked about the Hebrew midwives back in Exodus it’s worth bringing up the issue again here though because how central Rahab’s lie is in bringing about this situation we see in our text was her lie righteous now the rest of the scripture is gonna have a lot of interesting remarks when it comes to Rahab interactions here and I want to just briefly take you through the majority of those so take your Bibles first and take a look at Joshua chapter 6 verses 17 and 25 that was still in the same book just a few pages over this is later on when Jericho is actually conquered Joshua 6:17 and notice what comment is made about Rahab there it says the city shall be under the ban that is devoted to destruction it and all that is in it belongs to the Lord or Yahweh only Rahab the harlot and all who are with her in the house shall live because she hid the messengers whom we sent I’ll go down to verse 25 verse 25 says however Bray have the harlot and her father’s household and all she had Joshua spared G has lived in the midst of Israel to this day where she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho and mints what we learn here about Rahab from Joshua six she her family and her possessions they are all spared in Jericho’s destruction and she even continues to live in Israel afterward but notice the specific reason why she is spared it says because she hid the spies now let’s look at the New Testament jump all the way over to Matthew chapter one Matthew 1 verse 5 where we see matthew’s genealogy of Jesus the royal genealogy likely the line of Joseph here and notice what we hear in verse 5 regarding Rahab matthew 1:5 it says salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab Boaz was the father of Obed by ruth and obed the father of Jesse how very interesting which is Matthew report to us about Rahab she becomes part of the line of Israel’s kings which culminates in the Messiah this means that Rahab sometime after the events of reported in Joshua she apparently married a Jew named salmon and became the mother of Beau Epps also later the mother-in-law of Ruth what kind of man was Boaz it was a righteous man a generous man and also notably kind to foreigners coincidence let’s look at Hebrews now look at Hebrews chapter 11 Hebrews 11 verse 31 see another comment about Rahab Hebrews 11 31 says by faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient after she had welcomed the spies in peace the writer Hebrew tells us specifically Rahab is an example of fate even saving faith in the actions that she did on behalf of the spies what specifically did she do to the author Hebrews she welcome to the spies and peace that’s how she proved her faith Jason James says something similar about Rahab turned over book of James chapter 2 James 2:25 James 2:25 I mean the author James is making the point in his book special in the beginning that true faith always produces births and he points to Rahab as an example here’s what he says James 2:25 in the same way was not Rahab the harlot also justified by her by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way so James two points to Rahab as an example of faith the true kind of faith that produces the deeds and what’s the specific worker Good Eats was James points she received Israel’s messengers and sent them out another place that they would not be caught now do you know it’s from all these verses that we just looked at which part of Rahab’s actions is left out and every biblical writers praise of her are like it’s not mentioned at all it’s not commanded not mentioned other things she did are commended but not her lying this is very notable and on a slightly different tack is the Bible very clear about whether lying is a sin it’s quite clear and I’ll just bring you through a quick survey verses you don’t need to turn to these zombie a little bit quicker with them that you have them listed there on your screen X is 2016 10 commandments you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor this is basic to the law of God proverbs 12:22 lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh and those but those who deal faithfully are his delight so God strongly condemns the habit of lying revelation 21:8 says but for the Cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons sorcerers and idolaters and all Liars their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone which is the second death revelation says that lying is the characteristic of those who will burn forever under God’s holy wrath in a lake of fire washes 3:9 says do not lie to one another since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices so as Christians part of living the worthy life worthy walk because our salvation means having a righteous mouth putting off the old sinful way of actions including lying Titus 1:2 Titus 1 to give you a little fragment here but it has an important phrase in the middle it says in the hope of eternal life which God who cannot lie promised long ages ago so Paul is talking about God’s promises in this passage and he says he’s reminding Titus that lying is impossible for God God’s nature requires him to speak the truth and only the truth all the time this is to give us confidence in the Word of God and then first John 2:20 1 first John 2:20 1 says I’ve not written to you because you do not know the truth but because you do know it and because no lie is of the truth so no lie comes from or has anything to do with the truth now just this brief survey verses and there many more in the scriptures that talk about lying or telling the truth do any of these verses list exceptions for innocent permitted or even righteous lies they don’t and they’re all lies are grouped in the same category in these verses and they’re all condemned but this shouldn’t be too surprising because of the truth captured in Titus 1:2 and that is God cannot lie and this is what we’ve focused on in our previous discussion about lying as God is the basis of all righteousness if it is true that God cannot lie then lying can never be good because anything that is anything that is loving anything that is righteous or just must already be in God because God is God if there’s something that we can do that’s good that God cannot do then there’s some flaw something lacking in God which would contradict God’s very nature if flying wherever good ever right God would be able to do it or some goodness would be lacking in God but because God cannot lie this shows us that lying is never good lying is never right it is never loving it is never what a Christian is to do now it’s true that God sometimes withhold information doesn’t always say everything that he knows sometimes he allows people to believe what is false but he never lies so the scriptures are clear lying in any situation is sinful so bringing us back to Rahab we can be confident that in lying Rahab sinned but someone may say well if Rahab sinned and why did things turn out so well for Rahab we’re gonna see this a little bit more later on she was just honoring God why did God bless her what’s the answer the reasons God decided not to bring punishment or chastening to her for her lie God was being merciful to Rahab I mean there are other times in the scripture where God still blessed his people who sinned sometimes righteous people who are not demonstrating full faith maybe by lying and God still blesses them or all the times God chooses to show undeserved mercy to the wicked who lived their whole lives in opposition to God he still allows them to experience good on the other hand they’re people who walk faithfully with the Lord in the scriptures and they suffer for it some of them are even killed for it is that a sign of God’s disfavor no ultimately we can’t look to how a situation turns out to know what God thinks is right or praiseworthy we have to look at what God actually said what he commanded what was his own example what is his own nature and for those things we see that lying is sinful regardless of the consequences but another might ask well affray have sinned she lied how could she be held up as an example of faith in the rest of the scriptures is a lie kind of tainting her example of being a faithful person well it’s true that righteous acts if you’re doing a particular righteous accurate the thinking aright just thought and sin enters into it it does become tainted and that’s why apart from Christ there is truly nothing good that we could do even the really nice things or what seemed like righteous things on the outside if they’re tainted by a selfish motive or by some sinful component then they are not honoring to God and everything that we do is like that apart from Christ nevertheless it’s also true according to the scriptures that a person can do something righteous while at the same time doing something unrighteous or very shortly after doing something unrighteous and we can see this in a number of places in the scriptures I’ll just give you a few examples think about the woman who had the bleeding issue in the New Testament a member this woman she had this bleeding issue for four years but she has faith in Jesus and in Jesus’s healing power that she can be healed if she comes to Jesus now that is a righteous leaf and she’s commended even by Jesus for seeking him out for healing at Matthew 9 22 Jesus says to this woman daughter take courage your faith has made you well at once the woman was made well Wow one example of righteous faith but the woman’s specific method for obtaining this healing was actually sinful and unloving how so Oh in the account surrounding that statement I just read we see that she an unclean woman went into the midst of a people risking making them unclean and she deliberately touched another person which would have made him unclean too now she said I only want to touch the fringe of His garment but hey you touch His garment he’s wearing the garment he’s gonna become unclean and the Old Testament you’re instructed if you’re unclean you stay away from people and you do not make them unclean that is very unloving to make them ceremonially unclean and who are we talking about here we’re talking about Jesus this great teacher this miracle worker and more than that he is the perfect Lamb of God she’s gonna defile she’s gonna make ceremonially unclean the Lamb of God just so that she can be healed that’s not very loving of course Jesus is holiness his power is such that no unclean touch could defile him anything unclean touches Jesus it becomes clean but nevertheless you see with this woman even though she was demonstrating true faith and even righteousness by coming to Jesus to be healed her method of carrying this out obtained or was including a sinful component or to point to another example that we’ve already seen think about Moses back in the book of Exodus New Testament commends his faith even when he’s part of Pharaoh’s household I going to check out his brethren and identifying with them and even defending an oppressed Israelite taking vengeance this was righteous he was saying I’m not gonna stand with Egypt anymore I’m gonna stand with Israel and I’m gonna stand up for my brethren but how did what Moses in his faith and what he was demonstrating how did that include a plainly sinful part he committed murder he murdered an Egyptian he had no reason to murder this Egyptian other than he wanted to obtain vengeance but was not his right in that situation didn’t appear to be necessary so Moses even though he was demonstrating righteous faith he was also sinning and the way that he sought to carry out that righteous impulse so we see something similar with a brick hat we observed that she is righteous and she welcomes the spies she stands with Israel she fears the God of Israel she makes sure that the spies lies our lives are protected but her protection her faith that it contained a sinful choice along with it and that was to tell this lie now someone may say well what else was she gonna do she didn’t lie how else how on earth where she and the spies gonna get out of that Jam happy she saved their lives was there’s no other way she could have gotten out of that well is that really true we asked or what else could she have done that’s really a fair question because we don’t know there’s no way to know what else she could have done or what else God could have done to accomplish deliverance here maybe there was another way to protect and conceal these spies that didn’t involve telling a lie maybe she could have been more strategic with what she shared with the kings in tell the truth but withhold information that wouldn’t have resulted in the spies being discovered or maybe God could have done something miraculous or maybe she would have told the truth or just refused to say anything and they’d find the spies they’re all taken prisoner and they’re later rescued maybe they all were killed as holy martyrs and believers in Yahweh and we certainly know that honoring God is more important than life itself and it’s rewarded with eternal life so any number of things might have happened but God allowed these events to happen just as they did just as he desired because it was part of a larger purpose God did not force Rahab to sin it’s all part of what he ordained he actually suddenly arranged that the spies would be delivered by a faith filled yet failing prostitute he determined that this way would be the way that would give him the most glory so in one sense it couldn’t have happened any other way of course it’s worth mentioning that it’s quite amazing that Rahab did anything righteous at all considering the amount of Revelation she had about God considering what kind of person she was her background does she even chose to welcome the spies is amazing and God himself had performed this work inside of her yes it’s true she shouldn’t have lied but Wow considering her situation I can’t believe we should be amazed as she did what she did now on this question of necessity of lying just one other thought about it you know that the vast majority of lies in our day are excused any lies that is tried to be have an excuse his excuses being necessary I had to tell this lie it was for a good purpose I had to do it but as believers we know from the scriptures that nothing is necessary except God and following God’s Way if we can escape danger in a situation that we face righteously without sinning we do so it’s not necessary that we actually just go out there and ask for suffering walk into the middle of a dangerous situation is they do do everything who wants me and Jesus even tell us the disciples that they persecute you and once did he flee to another you’ve got more work to do you don’t have to sit there if you’ve got more opportunity for ministry so if there’s a way we can righteously escape danger we can do so and we can even get strategic and creative about how we do so you remember and I brought this up before the book of Acts when also put on trial by the Jews they they don’t like that he’s preaching the gospel of Jesus they’re accusing him of untrue things and Paul realizes he’s not going to get a fair trial with the Jews and so what does he cry out says brethren I’m being put on trial today from my hope in the resurrection which was true but it was also a very strategic thing to say because the people who are trying him disagreed on whether the resurrection really was going to happen one group of people who are trying to kill him turned against another people and they say hey we stand with Paul so that was a creative way to get out of that situation but it didn’t involve any wrongdoing so again we can do that too but in the end if danger or punishment cannot be escaped that’s it and we accepted we accept that danger or that punishment merely trusting God to provide and deliver because he will do so in this life and or in the next you know it just comes to my mind right now who’s a great example of this three friends of Daniel they knew that if they just bowed down dude statue that never considered one of them to do so they could have saved their lives and in a way they could have come up with all sorts of rationalizations they could say even though I’m bowing down I’m not really worshiping you know it just kind of looks like a wish meeting but I’m not but didn’t even go that route they knew that would be a compromise they said look Nebuchadnezzar we know that our God is able to deliver us even from you and your threats but if he doesn’t just know that we’re not going to bow down to your gods this should be the same for us let us never be what some Christians were accused of being in Romans 3:8 the word that’s some people were saying that Christians were saying was that let us sin let us do evil that good may come I think a lot of people are tempted to believe this when it comes to lying hey there’s a good outcome for this life though it’s permissible when does that ever true in the Christian life I’m just not sin that good come I’ll just do good trust out of the result now you may still have a practical questions when it comes to flying and telling the truth but I do believe the scriptures are clear and that God’s character is clear that there’s no such thing as a righteous lie of course there are times when we say things that are technically not true but are not really lying like we tell jokes are you sarcasm or act on stage use figures of speech use certain kinds of paraphrases etc but in those instances we have indicated to our audience in one way or another that we are speaking in a special mode so I would not consider that lying but outside of those instances if we write or say something untrue we lie and we’ve come unlike God and we dishonor God through our words because we testify that his quality of total truthfulness is not glorious it’s even a flaw in God so my dear brothers and sisters let us speak the truth whenever we speak let’s not even lie to make some surprise birthday party for somebody no lie is of the truth the scripture says it won’t always worship God without word but I’m actor ray Rahab’s lie was not righteous but her hiding the spies was and actually this was incredibly courageous and a faith filled act but why did she do it what was motivating her to treat Israel’s pie is this way we’re gonna find out as we read the rest of our passage look at Joshua chapter 2 back to Joshua chapter 2 and we’re gonna read from verses 8 to 24 Joshua 2 starting in verse 8 along with me as I read we’re used to saying now before they lay down she came up to them on the roof said to the men I know that Yahweh has given you the land that the terror of you has fallen on us that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you that we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came up when you came out of Egypt and what you did to the two kings the emirates who were beyond the Jordan to Sion and AAG whom you utterly destroyed when we heard it our hearts melted and had no courage and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you for Yahweh your God He is God in heaven above and on earth now therefore please swear to me by Yahweh since I have dealt kindly with you that you also deal kindly with my father’s household and give me a pledge of truth and deliver our lives from death so the men said to her our life for yours if you do not tell this business of ours and it shall come about when Yahweh gives us the land that we will deal kindly and faithfully with you then she let them down by a rope through the window for her house what’s on the city wall so that she was living on the wall she said to them go to the hill country so that the pursuers would not happen upon you and hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return then afterwards you may go on your way men said to her we shall be free from this earth you which you have made us wear unless when we come into the you tie the cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you led us down and gather to yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father’s household it shall come about that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street his blood shall be on his own head and we shall be free but anyone who is with you in the house his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on but if you tell this business of ours then we shall be free from the oath which you have made us swear she said according to your words so be it so she sent them away and they departed as she tied the scarlet cord in the window they departed and came to the hill country and remain there for three days until the pursuers returned now the pursuers had sought them all along the road but had not found them then the two men returned came down from the hill country and crossed over and came to Joshua the son of nun and they related to him all that had happened to them they said to Joshua shortly Yahweh has given us all the land into our hands moreover all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before us let’s observe this latter section notice what it is that Rahab has heard about the Israelites and their God according to verse 10 he’s heard about the Great Red Sea deliverance and the conquest of Israel against Sion and hog what had this news done to her and her people she says it filled them with terror they lost all their courage and notice also according to verse 9 what Rahab concluded what would happen to Canaan she said God has given this land to you to Israel I know that and notice what else she Berkeley knows about God in verse 11 she says Yahweh is God heaven and earth let’s not forget who’s saying these things Cain and I prostitute Canaanites were wicked people they were devoted to destruction according to the Torah they were to be too devoted to destruction and yet she one of them a notorious sinner among them she’s saying all these true things about God and then in the verses that follow these amazing declarations rehab requests that the Israelites swear to her that when they conquered Jericho but they spare her and her relatives and the Israelites agree on certain conditions and we see those conditions in our passage Rahab is not to tell anyone about their business she and her family at her stay inside the house during the attack on Jericho and she’s to tie a scarlet cord in her window this cord is apparently a different item than the rope that she used to help the men climbed down a different word in Hebrew also she ties it after they’re led down so it wouldn’t it wouldn’t have been tied already but this was going to be the sign the mark the people of Israel don’t mess with that house Rahab also gives the spies advice how to turn safely to their camp in verse 16 he tells them to go into the hill country and stay there three days now they appreciate the significance of this remember Jericho is part of the valley of the Jordan the bottom of the valley is the Jordan River and it’s to the east of Jericho and this is where the king’s men went to go look for the spies so the edge of the valley well where would it be the hills the the higher elevations it would be on the west on the other side of Jericho so she’s actually telling the spies go the opposite direction that anybody would think you would go go to the west go to the hills you can hide in the hills and then return later so the spies follow her device they escaped the city by climbing down the window climbing down the rope from Rahab’s window because her house was in the city wall and they do as she instructs and they come back to the camp of Israel and then once they return they tell Joshua what happened and notice their conclusion in verse 24 they say Yahweh surely has given us this land where all our enemies are melting with fear having made these observations let’s talk interpretation once again two main questions really having to do with the whole passage think about the results of the spying mission why did God have the two spies go through all that they did aw gee with Rahab nearly being discovered and then later returning to Joshua with their report what do you think I was thinking about the verses you mentioned earlier about the genealogy and and the explanations in the New Testament and to me it just seems like God really gets a lot of glory through using someone so imperfect accomplish his purposes right huge part of why this had to happen was so that we could see the God glorifying faith of Rahab we’ll talk more about that just a second but saw another hand yes yes yes well he doesn’t reward or punishment for her lines I think I was doing a study on Rahab and she’s like the first recorded Gentile that accepts Christ down the road one of the other things is that it’s like a foreshadowing of how in the New Testament Jesus said he’s going to bring peace between the Gentiles and the Jews and she’s like the first Gentile that accepts Christ and it’s through her fear what she saw happening in the land and one other thing I want to say is that I thought it was interesting that they told her to hang the red scarlet port down and it made me think of Passover and because she had accepted Christ it was like that house was redeemed yeah interesting parallels there just to recap what you said briefly Rahab stands out as the first or one of the first Gentiles to embrace Yahweh you say embrace Christ obviously she didn’t know it she didn’t know that name at that time but in a sense that’s true because anybody who saved is saved by Christ and she was looking to God provision even though she didn’t know the specifics of that yet yes she is one of the first and actually this is consistent with God’s entire purpose for Israel God says in the Torah you ought to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation oh wait I thought the priests veiss how can they be a kingdom of priests or they were going to function as priests for all the nations of the world they’re gonna be interceding for them and even drawing all the nations to Yahweh by being a holy people by having justice in their land and by having God do such mighty works in their behalf they were going to be they were designed to be drawing the Gentile nations to Yahweh now of course we’re going to read through the rest the Old Testament that that’s a mission that they largely failed to accomplish they will accomplish it one day when God causes Israel to repent and establishes his kingdom in Israel nevertheless we see that purpose already beginning in a very strange way with Rahab because this is the moment of conquest destroyed the Gentiles they’re evil wicked get them out of the land and God says I don’t want you to miss the fact that I’m actually intent to draw Gentiles to myself and Rahab is certainly one example of that he also noted the parallel between the Scarlet cord and the Passover certainly a similar idea it’s kind of like there’s a sign this house is redeemed this house this house is under the protection of Yahweh and ultimately that does have a connection to Christ so yes very interesting so it is important the spies needed to meet Rahab go through what they did because God was gonna glorify himself in revealing Rahab’s faith in showing his protection for a Canaanite Gentile prostitute he was going to show that he is able to deliver not just Rahab but also the spies go let’s face it the spies also needed help we’re about to die if we’re if we’re caught God says look I know how to protect you and I’m gonna do it this way and also certainly this would have been immensely encouraging to Israel not only seeing the faith of this woman but also her report that everyone in the land even in Jericho this strongly fortified city they are terrified of Israel not because Israelites are so great but because of Israel’s God and that’s why the spies say what they do in verse 24 surely God has given us the land cuz look look at the way the people are quaking in their boots let’s believe the Lord let’s obey Yahweh let’s go obtain the land all of this wouldn’t happen unless they had run into Rahab and experienced what they did they needed to hear her report they needed to see her faith they needed to experience her protection now along those lines let me ask another question because rehabs actions were not only helpful at that time they’re recorded in meticulously in the scripture for all future generations to behold so how what does Rahab’s example not only meant to encourage Israel but even us today toward obedience we see in Rahab how God provide for anyone who trusts in him despite their history of sin despite their social station despite their ethnic background God says you look to me I will vindicate your faith the rest of the Scriptures will certainly be clear especially in the New Testament just how powerful God is to forgive cleanse and transform sinners no one is beyond the grace of God I mean you can’t get that more clearly than with Rahab I mean she is the most notorious of sinners she is one of the most notorious sinners at that time and Israel’s eyes and God says look look at what I’m able to do even for her when she looks to me and faith it’s also amazing when you think about it it’s not like Rahab was saved and then just went on to live an immoral life no because of what we see what bo asked Rahab must have grown in faith she must have become a wise and righteous woman in Israel because she rears up a faithful son and God was even pleased to have her be in the line of Messiah this is God’s powerful grace this is God’s saving and transforming grace which is not just available to Rahab but to any of us today no matter where you come from no matter what your situation is right now if you look to Jesus if you believe in him if you repent of your sin just the same way that Rahab did she said I’m not living that old life anymore I’m not going to continue to behave the way that the people around me behave I’m following Yahweh if we do the same thing in our lives and say I’m letting go of my old life I’m gonna trust in Christ instead what will God do Reagan has proof God says I will vindicate that faith this is a testimony a powerful Testament that we see in the life of Rahab we also see along with this the incredible power of God just in general because he’s not only able to save but he’s able to subdue all enemies all his enemies all his peoples enemies in terror and even cause them to turn to God when God so chooses you know one of the themes that we were talking about last line last time is that God is the unstoppable God makes no sense to rebel against God to oppose his purposes because you’re not gonna win that’s the sentiment behind the phrase in psalm 46 be still and know that I am God stop rebelling stop conspiring you’re not gonna win against me or Psalm 2 why do the nation’s rage and the people’s devise a vain thing they say let’s take off the yoke of Yahweh and take off the yoke of Yahweh’s king but what does Yahweh do says he in the heaven he who sits in the heavens laughs and he says as for me I’ve installed my King on Mount Zion I don’t know what you guys are doing but I’ve installed my King on Mount Zion it’s gonna happen look at even here whether Rahab how that truth is Illustrated all the people of the land are cowering in fear God says I’m able to make them do that and more than that God says look I’ll even turn this notorious sinner towards me that’s my power and so when we think about maybe notorious sinners today or enemies of God we do not need to fear them just as Israel did not need to fear its enemies because who who is in control of all who reigns Yahweh does our God does and he says look I’m able to subdue them in a moment I can destroy them I can cause them to run away in fear or I can even draw them to myself now of course everyone is responsible for his own actions Donal turn to God unless God is gracious to them though because of their evil hearts God says I’m able to do that so don’t fear maybe you have somebody who’s persecuting you maybe you have somebody who’s threatened you maybe you have somebody who’s just such a notorious Senate you say that person could never come to God it’s so rebellious this account shows us don’t forget the power of God he is the unstoppable God he can make anyone turn to him if you so chooses God revealing himself in such a way as he did to rehab and so that person says oh I want to follow him I wanted I want to be with the ahwe I see his beauty I see his glory I see his power I don’t want to go any other way why God is such a God he is so great in his power and he’s also so great in his grace Rahab is a testament to that to all generations so we need to heed that testimony already we’re thinking a little bit about application and so I do think that is the main application that I want you to take home from this text no one is too unclean for Jesus no one is beyond God’s grace or power God is glorified and saving transforming and providing for such people as Rahab he didn’t just provide for her you also provide it for the spies they provided for Israel as they were coming into the land to obtain the land and he’ll also provide for us now there are a few other application questions I want to bring to your attention I took these from the workbook from Answers in Genesis if you do now you’ll see the same questions there along the same lines what we’ve been looking at today so more questions that help you consider the implications of what we talked about number one what do we learn about God through this account we’re a lying prostitute was adopted in God’s chosen nation and became became an ancestor of the Messiah we’ve already seen the grace of God certainly display the power of God put on display but what else yes I see another hand yeah we all can be included no matter where we come from what we’ve done who we are you often be included it means surrender to God we allow him to come into our lives all things are washed away and we to the point where he was chosen to be of the line of the Messiah yeah the saving nature of God the the openness of this salvation he is a God even though there’s only one way to be saved and that is through Christ and nevertheless it is offered to all anyone anyone who turns they they have the possibility of salvation they will be saved if they turn God guarantees so yeah no matter matter where I’m from what else do we see yes go ahead what he was asked to do but his sovereignty and his sovereignty even though she lies God accomplished what he wanted through encouraging the spies that they do like he said Wow they’re afraid of us we can do this and it also shows us what faith can do when we yeah so more emphasized here the sovereignty of God and the power of faith or and how it how it translates into righteous action yes both of those things are true and that’s that’s all God’s God’s the one who’s doing that it’s Lee another thing we see here is how God wanted that kind of like a characteristic way that God loves to exalt himself and that is by raising up the humble as I said can’t get much more can’t get much lower than Rahab God says here is one that I will exalt she has faith in me and now I will raise her up not only by saving her protecting her in the time of Israel’s invasion again honor from all time being included in the scripture being put into the line in the Messiah that’s the way God exalts the humble who turned to him this is a truth from Scripture God is opposed to proud but gives grace to the humble and what’s the opposite that we see here Jericho this proud City this strong City the city that had trusted in itself in its own way what’s gonna happen to them they’re gonna be laid low they’re gonna be destroyed they’re gonna be annihilated by God this is the truth that we need to remember he is this kind of God he loves to glorify himself by taking the low and exalting them but he loves to take those who will not glorify God those who exalt themselves he says I’ll bring you low because I’m jealous from my own glory God as opposed to proud but gives grace to the humble we could see other things but hopefully you can at least see those from this passage here’s another question how does an account like this one where a person sin is put on display both relying and err also her her past how does it demonstrate the authenticity of the Bible it shows no sin is too great that if we confess it God is faithful to redeem and also I thought about my sins were put on display by Jesus when he come for me so just thinking theological excel difficult yes we see that no one is beyond God’s grace and we see that even in our own lives on the cross our sins were accounted and paid for by Christ but just thinking about the authenticity of the scriptures as a whole this this story being recorded as it does how does it show that the Bible is true it takes the negative into a positive I mean most most acts in history most countries like Babylon and Assyria they they never really catalog their their weaknesses or they’re wrong but but God is willing to show what people come up short and how exhausting yeah so yeah just in comparison to other ancient nations other ancient texts this is very very surprising the way the israel’s history is related official was coming up with this themselves this is all made up they came up with their own past which is what many liberal scholars say today why would they choose this why would they choose to say all right we’re a nation of former slaves who were redeemed by Yahweh even though we were really sinful people no one would come up with that they say all by our righteousness we were once Kings but we were unjustly oppressed oh they come up with this this glorious tale which is not actually true but the fact that the Bible records Israel’s history as it does in a way that nobody would have made up it shows us that the Bible is true or looking at Rahab she becomes a hero of faith but is this the kind of hero faith anyone would choose no surely we need some sort of King we need some sort of noble person this our righteous woman who has been pure her whole life and she will be the example of faith that’s what we would come up with God says that’s not how I glorify myself and that’s not it’s not system with real life in real life we’re all Trail and failing people and yet God works powerfully in our lives by His grace we actually can take comfort in the authenticity of the Bible showing us even faith filled person’s failings because we say if God was still able to show mercy and show powerful transforming grace in that person’s life you can do it in my own but this is this is part of why we see the truthfulness of the Bible it doesn’t hide the reality of the world and the reality of the people the past shows us as they really were and yet we see God working a powerful way in them now one a last question for you to think about if you were faced with the situation where seemed as though lying would be the action that would best protect someone from harm how might you respond in a way that demonstrates your faith in God we’ve already talked about this question the answer basically is don’t lie you demonstrate faith and not lying telling the truth or saying something else even if it’s not everything that you could say something that’s not a lie God would never expect his people to sin to accomplish his plans he sometimes uses it but that isn’t his will for us that’s not what he’s prescribed for us he calls on us to be like him and know where we have failed in this and I don’t think there’s any single one of us who says who has never told a lie where we have failed we are forgiven in Christ if we have turned to Christ and faith and repentance we are forgiven even for every careless word we have spoken nevertheless we should not sin with the idea that thinking some good will come from it even God’s forgiveness and grace we can trust that God will accomplish his plans for us without a hint of sin so though maybe maybe circumstances may turn out to be more difficult for us because we tell the truth and must obey God I think as we know that he can take care of us any other questions about what you heard today I’m sorry what is your name you’ve raised your hands I roll times Liz okay good to meet you well if you have any other questions I’m sorry pardon me alright if you have any other questions or comments on today’s lesson please feel free to email me send out the emails about the sunday school previews each week you can get get me at Daffy cepacia at gmail.com that’s all for this week next week we’re gonna see more of how God confirms that he is with Joshua and he is with ischial because God is going to do something else very powerful and momentous Israel will cross the Jordan River even the raging Jordan River on dry ground now I look forward to talking to you about that next time let me close in prayer a Heavenly Father we thank you for this account for this testimony of how you are the unstoppable God even when it comes to transforming sinners who would have ever believed that Rahab would become a follower of Yahweh a powerful agent of your will a faithful person will come to raise up another generation of righteous Israelites who would have thought who would have thought that was possible and yet it’s possible through you salvation is impossible with man but it is possible with you we thank you for that God because when we’re honest we are all like Rahab deep down maybe we didn’t sin the same way that she did but we have all sinned and fallen short of your glory we all loved ourselves we all went the way of the world in one way or another but you had mercy on us just as you had mercy on her pray for any of those who are listening today who have not yet seen your mercy I’ve not yet experienced your transforming grace that Lord they would call out to you that they would look to you in repentance and faith they would trust in only you Jesus Christ to be their substitute to be their righteousness apart from works apart from any ritual god I pray that you would glorify yourselves glorify yourself in their salvation just as you glorified yourself in Rahab’s I pray Lord you bless the people at Calvary as they continue worshiping and learning about you today and Jesus name Amen you all see you again soon

    God Uses Rahab

In this lesson of the Answers Bible Curriculum, David Capoccia looks at how God used the Canaanite harlot Rahab to provide protection for Israelite spies and encouragement to all Israel. David Capoccia also investigates whether lying is ever permitted by God and what believers should make of Rahab’s commended faith.

  • God Calls Joshua

    God Calls Joshua

In this lesson, David Capoccia looks at God’s instruction to Joshua as Joshua is about to lead Israel into Canaan. God exhorts Joshua to continually study God’s Word, to believe it, to obey it, and to, thereby, receive God’s reward and provision. David Capoccia explains how this process was exemplified in both Joshua’s and Jesus’ life and how it really should characterize the lives of all believers.
