    The Birth of Christ

Answers Bible Curriculum Year 3 Quarter 1 Lesson 8

This week in Sunday school, we look at the birth of Jesus. Though we may feel very familiar with Luke’s account of Christ’s birth, how much of what we “know” is actually just tradition and not really found in the Bible? Moreover, has familiarity made us the lose the sense of wonder of what really happened in the incarnation? How should the Son of God’s incarnation impact our lives today? We’ll consider these questions and more.

Our main text will be Luke 2:1-20.

it’s really good to be back thank you for being here for Sunday School let us begin We are continuing our study of the gospels today and our lesson is entitled the birth of Christ last week we looked at God’s announcements to both Zacharias and Mary regarding what God was about to do and God affirmed that the two children that would be born of them would begin the Fulfillment of God’s many Old Testament prophecies to bring Salvation and restoration to Israel and not just to Israel but to the world at first child John would be the Forerunner and then the second child Jesus would be the king would be the Messiah would be the Son of God himself everything was taking place and this is what we emphasized last week everything was taking place according to God’s perfect glorious plan it’s a plan that exalts the humble and shames the proud as a plan that includes everyone even the outcasts of Israel even the Gentiles and this had always been God’s plan now what was man to do in response to this plan he was to believe it was to rejoice and he was to live a life that demonstrated submission to that plan now today we’re going to see a little bit more of what we’ve looked at we’re going to see more of just what an astounding salvation plan God has always had and we’ll see what an astounding savior God has always had that God has provided that he had planned to provide and that he did provide for all men now as we look further at the birth of Christ today it is again important for us to remind or I guess I’ll remind you to beware familiarity you probably know this chapter of the Bible or you may have you heard or read this chapter of the Bible more than any other because it’s so associated with Christmas how well do you really know the story of Christ’s birth the account of Christ’s birth have you fallen prey to certain Traditions about Jesus birth that actually aren’t in the Bible and even if you do know all the details of Jesus birth do you appreciate their magnitude let us come to this account with fresh eyes let’s put ourselves back in the place of Mary of Joseph of the Shepherds of the people of Israel and of the converts that were won Under Paul’s Ministry those Gentile converts let’s hear this account or let’s experience this account from their perspectives we cannot take this news lightly we are to be amazed and be affected once again by one of the most astounding one of the most Unthinkable events in history the Incarnation of God we’re going to be focusing on Luke Chapter 2 verses 1 to 20 today we’re going to read we’re going to read and observe the text we’ll interpret it and we’ll apply it to our lives that’s basically our outline for today this is our inductive Bible study method we’re going to see it in action let’s pray God thank you for answering our prayers to bring Emma and me back safely to Calvary I pray God that this time of Sunday school would be rich as we look at your word as we look at the account of Christ’s birth I pray God you give me the ability to explain it but I pray most of all that we would be affected by this word this is really amazing what we’re talking about I pray that you would help me do it display that and help the people to appreciate that understand that and apply it I pray God that you would bless this time work among your people amen okay open up your Bibles to Luke chapter 2.

if you’re using the Pew Bible That’s page 2020 Luke Chapter 2 we’re going to read verses 1 to 20.

this is the specific account of Christ’s birth Luke is the only one who gives us this information the other gospel accounts record things a little differently but Luke’s the only one who gives us what we see here so Luke Chapter 2 verses 1 to 20 let’s read now in those days decree went out from Caesar Augustus that a census be taken of all the inhabited Earth this was the first census taken while quirinius was governor of Syria and everyone was on his way to register for the census each to his own City Joseph also went up From Galilee from the city of Nazareth to Judea to the city of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and family of David in order to register along with Mary who was engaged to him and was with child while they were there the days were completed for her to give birth and she gave birth to her first born son and she wrapped him in Claws and laid him in a Manger because there was no room for them in the Inn in the same region there were some Shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flocks by night and an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them and the glory of the Lord Shone around them and they were terribly frightened but the angel said to them do not be afraid for behold I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people for today in the city of David there has been born for you a savior who is Christ the lord this will be a sign for you you will find a baby wrapped in Claws and lying in a Manger and suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly hosts praising God and saying glory to God in the highest and on Earth peace among men with whom he is pleased and when the Angels had gone away from them into heaven the Shepherds began saying to one another let us go straight to Bethlehem then and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us so they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph and the baby as he lay in the manger when they had seen this they made known the statement which had been told them about this child and all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the Shepherds but Mary treasured all these things but Mary treasured all these things pondering them in her heart the Shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen just as had been told them okay let’s begin our study of this text with simple observations notice the timing details and verses one and two we are in the reign of Caesar Augustus Augustus formerly known as Octavian became the first emperor of Rome after he defeated his last remaining rival Mark Anthony at the Battle of actium in Augustus kept the facade of a Roman Republic but in fact he ruled Rome as Emperor from 27 BC to ad14 so we know we’re within that range the text here says though that Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the whole world and we should understand the word the term whole world as all the Roman Empire but multiple senses were administered during Augustus Reign there was a cycle of censuses so Luke clarifies for his audience that he’s referring to the first census that occurred while quirinius was governor of Syria so with that information Luke’s audience is able to know the exact year that Luke is talking about but we’re not as familiar with the government or the time of government of coronius so we have to combine this information from Luke on the information we hear from Matthew and also what we’ve discovered via archeology to try and understand what year Luke is talking about I’m going to leave that puzzle for next week because next week we talk about Herod and that’s the final piece of the puzzle that the Bible gives us concerning the date the date of Christ’s birth but for now I will repeat that we’re looking at a date within or probably within the range of ad6 to 4. so 86 85 or 84 for Christ’s birth that’s the Year we’re in now notice verse 3. this census requires everyone requires everyone in Judea to return to a city of his ancestral tribe Joseph like Mary’s from the tribe of Judah and the line of David so he travels with Mary from Nazareth and Galilee which would be in Northern Israel to Bethlehem and Judea they’d be going south and both of them register there now think back to our previous lessons why is Bethlehem significant Old Testament prophecy about Bethlehem where was it not Malachi but close Micah Micah 5 2.

which says but as for you Bethlehem ephratha too little to be among the clans of Judah from you one will go forth for me to be ruler in Israel his going forth are from long ago from the days of Eternity so the Old Testament said Bethlehem this otherwise common not that important town it’s going to be the place where my ruler is going to come from that’s going to be the place where the Messiah comes from did Joseph and Mary know that when they were on their way maybe it was an but that’s the city that they end up going to also notice Luke uses the phrase the city of David he didn’t have to use that phrase this happens to be where David was from by using the phrase city of David what should this bring back to mind for the reader or hearer who’s at least somewhat familiar with the Old Testament exactly the davidic Covenant that God promised to David your your house is going to have the Throne of Israel forever and when we saw the the davidic line lose the kingship when the kingdom of Judah was ended we we are wondering about that promise when is the davidic king going to return so Luke includes that phrase the city of David and that should perk up his audience’s ears if they know anything about the davidic Covenant oh David ah the Messiah from the davidic line and so all of that is associated with Bethlehem now what form of transportation did Mary and Joseph use to get to Bethlehem donkey possibly but the text doesn’t say just says that they went to Bethlehem we don’t know what kind of Transport if they use their transport if they use an animal at all we don’t know if they did and we don’t know what kind of animal that they did that they used certainly the tradition is that they use a donkey but that’s not actually in the text we also don’t know how pregnant Mary was when she was uh traveling to Bethlehem our image is that she was very pregnant it’s like whoa get her to a place because she’s about to give birth that’s usually the way it’s represented but the Bible doesn’t actually say that the phrase here about when she gives birth simply says while she was there so that could have been immediately it could have been a little bit afterwards we’re not told specifically in the text but Mary does give birth and or she gives birth and we have Jesus her firstborn the one conceived by the Holy Spirit the one on whom all the promises of the Old Testament Center the one whom Gabriel would revealed would be called the son of God this Jesus comes into the world now notice what Mary does as soon as Jesus is born she raps newborn Jesus in swaddling Claws and lays him in a Manger now what’s a Manger feeding trough for animals this feeding trough was probably filled with straw and made into a makeshift bed or crib for the newborn babe imagine it was somewhat cleaned up too now notice the reason for Mary’s use of the manger it says four wait let me find it again or because there was no room for them in the Inn she laid him in the manger because there was no room for them in the end now this word in the word for in here is kataluma and it means literally lodging place so in is not a bad translation of that word and then it’s certainly a place where someone might launch but there is a good reason or there are good reasons for us to understand this word otherwise than in In this passage the word katalima only appears three times the New Testament one time here one other time in Luke and one time in Mark the other two times it is used and that’s Mark 14 14 and Luke 22 11. it is used to describe the upper room or the guest room in which Jesus has the Passover meal with his disciples the quotation is where is the katalima and which I may eat with my disciples where is their guest room that’s significant furthermore when in appears again in the Book of Luke when The New American Standard translates a word that means in Luke 10 34 that’s the parable of the Good Samaritan we have an Innkeeper there by the way an inn and an Innkeeper it’s not the same word it’s not kataluma it’s a different word also in the book of Acts which is also written by Luke we see another word translated in but it’s not kataluma in Acts 28 15 when Paul passes through the area known as the three Inns it’s not the word katalima it’s the word tavernay where we get Tavern and would Mary and Joseph really have wanted to stay in an inn s in the Greco-Roman world were not like our Inns or hotels today they were usually seedy places where prostitutes applied their trade most Travelers in the Roman World both Jew and Gentile did not go to an inn if they could help it the usual custom was to stay with a relative or friend in the area that you were traveling to this is also partly by the way this understanding of Inns in the Roman world this is also partly why the New Testament commands that Believers practice Hospitality to Christians the traveling Christians don’t make them stay in an inn bring them into your own home even if you don’t know them show Hospitality to your fellow brothers so we have this background of Inns and perhaps Inns in Judea weren’t as bad as elsewhere you’d hope at least the Jewish Inns wouldn’t be the same with the Indians and Jewish lands nevertheless the prevailing custom of travel at the time was to stay in someone’s guest room rather than in an inn so translating kataluma as guest room makes more sense in this context based on the historical background and really common sense I mean because think about it did Joseph and Mary really set out for Bethlehem with no idea of where they would stay wondering hoping there might be room in a local Inn no they probably had relatives in Bethlehem and they plan to stay with one of those relatives relatives that could help marry with the baby help her deliver the baby I mean because Joseph probably was young like Mary herself he’s never dealt with a baby before or labor what help is he going to be no she probably was they probably are going to rely on the help of some relatives but when they arrived in Bethlehem they found that this guest room that they were planning on staying in was already occupied after all many people were traveling to register for the census and another relative happened to Lodge in the same house so does this relative just toss them out on the street sorry guest room’s already occupied you gotta go no would we do that if one of our relatives showed up to our door sorry no room for you I’ve already got someone in our guest room oh we would make room somewhere else in the house and remember the Jews especially were focused on Hospitality it was a mark of Jewish respectability to be hospitable but never throw one of your relatives out onto the street so what does this relative do upon seeing Mary and Joseph in their clear need the relative clears other space in the home space that would be normally reserved for the animals for the animals at night because you see I’ll show you some pictures to illustrate this many Jewish Homes at this time had a small courtyard for animals they might keep that some chickens or a mule or a donkey or something like that normally during the day they’d be out in the courtyard but at night those animals will be brought inside the house into the first floor they’d be brought into what would normally be the living space for the people of the house that’s where they’d stay at night so then whomever is accommodating Joseph and Mary probably sets up the couple in this area normally used for animals where they normally would sleep and they help Mary deliver and take care of the baby the manger probably was part of the nightly setup for these animals or was simply taken from the courtyard as a place a convenient place to place Jesus so with some of this discussion you should be seeing by now that we have to check many of our modern Notions of what giving birth was like in ancient times because that’s not what it’s like for us at all today is it for us it’s the father and the mother going alone to the hospital and coming out with a baby but that’s nothing like what it was like in Jesus’s time on the contrary and ancient cultures you have the whole family coming together when someone is giving birth the whole family is coming together to help relatives coming together to help and celebrate the birth of a new member of the clan it was a family time and it’s not as if you say didn’t she have this baby without being married to Joseph wouldn’t they be shunning her because of that well later on in this chapter we see Joseph Mary and Jesus traveling to Jerusalem and they’re traveling with relatives both to and from relatives and acquaintances they were not outcasts from Jewish Society whatever people thought about her pregnancy they were still connected to their relatives and to other people they were not ostracized so having a family coming together having Joseph and Mary seeking to stay with a relative in their guest room makes sense therefore we probably should get rid of The Innkeeper stable the cave and other similar elements that come from our imaginary Recreations of the nativity these elements are simply tradition they do have strong tradition but they’re simply tradition and not really supported by what the Bible says or the Bible’s historical context but if you set up a nativity in your home and have a stable in the donkeys and all that kind of stuff you’re not doing you’re not sinning that’s okay now saying all this I don’t want you to think that Jesus being put into a feeding trough was normal that certainly was not common baby care practice also even though Jesus probably wasn’t born in a stable per se he nonetheless was born in a very humble setting there’s no glory even being born in a common house for common people in an area where animals normally sleep or in being laying in an animal’s feeding trough what Luke is describing then it’s a very poignant entry of the Son of God into the world this is how he came now it just so happened that there are also some Shepherds tending flocks in the same area at night tending flocks by night and so what class of society did Shepherds belong they’re low class lower class not not very important not very respected but notice what these Shepherds see suddenly an angel stands before them and the glory of the Lord shines all around them now what do we call the visible glory of the Lord the Shekinah the Shekinah glory of the Lord the special dazzling Glory of God’s presence and when was the last time in the Old Testament that God’s Shekinah Glory was seen on Earth yes when did that Glory depart the temple it did happen before the Exile what book of the Bible features a vision of that Glory departing the temple Ezekiel that’s right Ezekiel Ezekiel sees the glory of God departing he also sees the vision of the glory of God coming back at the prophecy of what God is going to do in the future but the glory Departed the visible Glory the visible um dazzling presence of God the sign of God’s presence left Israel but now we see that Shekinah again we see it back on Earth and it’s all around these Shepherds as this angel speaks to them and notice the shepherd’s response they are terribly afraid are we about to die they probably fought you see something Supernatural like that you think your life is about to end but notice what the angel says and we’re not surprised by this by now because we’ve seen it twice already in the Book of Luke do not be afraid don’t fear why for I bring you good news of great joy which will be for whom for all the people I just set off a little alarm Bell in your mind ding ding ding all the people what was Luke’s purpose I mean he’s showing that salvation is for all men then we get another four in the text another reason another explanation for why the Shepherds should not fear for a savior has been born for you in the city of David that is Bethlehem the city that you’re right nearby the town that you’re right next to with your flocks a savior has been born there for you who is this savior Angel says he is Christ the lord remember Christ just the word for messiah anointed one the Lord that praised the Lord of the term Lord means Master but it is also the new testament’s way of rendering the the name of God from the Old Testament Yahweh we usually see the term Yahweh in the Old Testament sometimes in in all capital letters in the New Testament we don’t see the the term Yahweh or Jehovah spelled out instead we see Lord the Lord even later on in this passage there’s the use of the term Lord to describe God and so many argue that that’s actually what’s being declared here this is Christ God this is Messiah God that’s what the angel declared and then he gives a sign the angel gives a sign to the Shepherds regarding this announcement he says you will find a baby wrapped in claws lying in a feeding trough when you see a newly born baby swallowed in Claws and lying in a Manger you know that what I’ve declared to you is true and you will have found the Messiah and notice their next action or notice the next action not the shepherd’s acting yet suddenly a multitude of the heavenly host and whenever you see the term host think Army host is an army term military term a multitude of the Heavenly Army of angels appears and they are all praising God and saying glory be to God in the highest place and peace be on earth among men with whom God is pleased now this statement is where or the statement about the multitude of angels is where we get the lines for the Christian hymn Angels We Have Heard on High glory to God in the highest is the same as Gloria in excelsis Deo and Latin now the hymn describes the angels as singing but notice that’s not actually what it says here it says that we see the verbs they were praising and they were saying a good praising mean singing it could possibly though or possibly but it’s interesting when I just did a a brief study on angels singing in the Bible I can only find two places where angels are explicitly said to sing most of the time in the Bible they just speak they do praise they do say not very often sing but whether they were singing or speaking this must have been an awe-inspiring sight you have this Mighty Angelic Army All Around are all in the sky you’ve got the Shekinah Glory all around you grab this Angel standing before the Shepherds and they are praising God and announcing peace to men and isn’t it striking that it’s an Angelic Army that is proclaiming peace and notice that when this Vision ceases the Shepherds hurry to Bethlehem to see what God had made known to them and eventually they find their way to marrying Joseph now how did they find Mary and Joseph it’s funny when they look up the pictures of this scene you’ll type in Luke two Shepherds on Google Images or something like that you see them following the star well I don’t know if we can really say that there’s no mention of a star in this passage and yes the wise men are associated with a star that’s how they find Jesus but did the star really appear now maybe that wasn’t the way that the angel said that they would find them they had to be looking for a different sign my guess as to how they found Mary and Joseph is that they basically were searching the town for a residence where their people were still up that they’re still up in the middle of the night so remember this isn’t a world without electricity before electricity and so nighttime there’s much less activity night time is primarily meant for sleeping you could stay up if you had a lamp and do something like that but most the time night was for sleeping so perhaps they were just looking for a home that was all lit up because most the other houses in Bethlehem would be dark and there probably was an extra amount of noise coming from this house because you’ve got the birth taking place you’ve got the relatives all working and oohing and awing over the baby talking with one another asking get this get that so there’s some noise coming from a certain house this house is lit up there’s noise from this house and maybe the neighbors nearby they’re up too because they want to know what’s going on what’s the commotion what’s going on so maybe they’re up too so they’re just looking for the light and looking for the sound in some way or other Shepherds do find the house of Marion Joseph and then they see the sign they see what the Angels had foretold there’s the swaddle newborn Jesus in the manger in a feeding trough the arrival of the Shepherds probably created even more noise got we don’t know how many Shepherds there were at least more than one and they they come through and they’re talking and they they probably are celebrating and so they’re getting more people awake oh what what is going on out there people start coming to their doors trying to figure out what’s going on and there was notice what the Shepherds do next they make no neogellic vision they declare an angel appeared to us told us that the Savior and Messiah had been born they told us that we would find him here in Bethlehem swaddled in a manger and here he is just as the angel had said we saw a whole host of angels giving glory to God and declaring peace to men this child is our Messiah and notice to whom do the Shepherds say this to everyone everyone who’s there and then notice the responses we see three different responses the people wondered what the Shepherds declared Mary treasured and pondered these things in her heart and the Shepherds returned to their flocks glorifying and praising God so we’ve made our observations on the text let’s now go to step two let’s consider interpretation work through some interpretation questions notice that the Angels appear to Shepherds near Bethlehem and not to the people of Bethlehem or even the priests in Jerusalem this was God’s choice how does this choice of God connect with the themes of Luke and even of the New Testament as a whole announcement was made to Shepherds and not to others how does that connect with themes of the New Testament Irma yeah exactly and we see that most explicitly declared in First Corinthians it says God has chosen the weak of the world to shame the strong this is fundamental to the gospel this is fundamentals of Salvation God takes the hormone and exalts them and he takes the proud and he shames them he brings them low and we see another instance of that here God has chosen the Shepherds to be the ones who would Herald the coming of Jesus that’s the ones to whom he made the announcement low class not important he says they’re going to be my Heralds and even that is a theme we see throughout all of Luke it’s these not important people it’s these outcasts of society that are frequently having an important role we had Zacharias and Elizabeth old Barren couple they had the shame of not having children and you have Mary some no-name young woman in Nazareth she’s chosen to Bear the Son of God now we have these Shepherds Shepherds being highlighted for a special blessing and for declaring that Messiah has come this is not an accident this is God’s choice exalting his gospel now notice the emphasis on Joy in the Angel’s message I bring you good news of great joy what’s so joyful about this news perhaps this is obvious to you but what’s so joyful about this What’s Happening Here we have the birth of a savior and what do we need what do we need saving from Sin from death from the curse this is great news this is joyful news God has provided a savior that savior has finally come he had foretold a savior was coming but now he’s come the one who’s going to save us from our sins the one who’s going to buy us back the one who’s going to cover us and we could even broaden that to connect Jesus and his coming with many other Old Testament promises God is going to remember Israel God is going to exalt Israel restore Israel keep his promises to them but those promises are going to be broadened to embrace even the Gentiles throughout the world all this is coming to pass it’s beginning to happen those promises are being fulfilled this is great news this is a huge benefit to mankind that is now Manifest this is joyful news now in what sense was God announcing peace peace on Earth what sense was God announcing peace in verse 14.

peace between men and God has that you’re right has that um let me say it this way does that apply to all men automatically no how will men be at peace with God it will be through this child this is first of all not a mere announcement of that ambiguous feeling of Peace everything’s okay everybody Don’t Worry Be Happy peace on Earth no that’s not what it’s about this is about as you correctly identified this is about peace with God man has been in Rebellion man has been at war with God and God is heralding an overture of peace and this piece does lead to that feeling of wholeness that feeling of everything being okay but man ought not to feel that way until he actually is that way with God until he actually is at peace with God yes Roy right thanks Roy I’ll just repeat your comment briefly this this phrase can be easily mischaracterized especially by people in the world peace on Earth to Men of good will actually talk about that latter phrase in just a second but no this is not about men earning peace or men automatically having peace God is saying peace is available you can be at peace you’re not automatically already at peace with God but you have a way to be at peace and that way is now being revealed the mediator has arrived The Advocate has arrived the high priest has arrived peace is now available to men through this one now getting to a little bit of what Roy was saying in what sense is God pleased with men in other ways that are this verse is the second part of the verse 14 is translated but The New American Standard says peace on Earth and actually let me go back to the verse so I don’t misquote it among men with whom he is pleased and what sense is God pleased well this is certainly not men earning God’s favor or that man is innately good somehow and therefore they please God no we know the rest of the scriptures they get rid of that idea so we must understand this phrase similarly to how we understood the statement given to Mary Hail Mary full of grace is how it’s often quoted but that just means favored one you’ve received favor from God not based on what you’ve done but because God simply was pleased to give it to you greetings you have received God’s favor just by his own Grace same thing with men you’ve received the pleasure of God you’ve received the favor of God not based on anything that you’ve done but based on how good God is he’s chosen to show you favor he’s given you unmerited favor what we call Grace he’s giving you unmerited favor by sending this this child sending this one he will save you from your sins that’s unmerited favor and that God was pleased to do that now why do the Angels after this announcement why do the multitude of angels appear and they all give glory to God why would that be a necessary next action glory to God in the highest why why appear and say that yeah that’s so that we don’t miss the point that what’s happening is extremely glorious the Angels cannot help but appear all of them the multitude the hosts and say glory to God what is happening right now is incredible glory to God and the Incarnation is glorious God has done many glorious and praiseworthy things in the Bible but what is happening here in the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem is one of the most glorious acts I won’t say the most glorious act because we haven’t seen the cross yet but it is one of the most glorious acts the Son of God has become a man in order to save men how glorious and we see specifically in this act some of the attributes of God what attributes of God are being a highlight here Grace it’s Mercy this was undeserved but look he’s pouring it out he’s pouring out Grace what else humility that is really interesting this is a striking display of the humility of God and you’d think someone like God who deserves all glory how could he be humble how could even demonstrate humility ah but that’s what he did in sending his son in the Incarnation we would otherwise never be able to see the humility of God but we see it here because consider the depth to which the Eternal God is stooping in this act the uncontainable god is taking on the form of a finite man he who dwells an unapproachable light is being born in a common home in Bethlehem and laid in a feeding trough he who has all power and Majesty is being born as a helpless baby with all that being a baby entails burping diaper changes feeding what a downgrade but the sun does it willingly for the sake of the father out of love for the father for the sake of the ones the father has given him for the sake of us for the sake of his elect truly without the Incarnation we would never know the profound humility of God as displayed in the Sun and that humility is beautiful that humility is glorious so we see the humility we see God’s grace we can also say we see God’s love just think about the incredible loss of privileges that God has that God the son is willingly choosing to save unworthy men he’s choosing to suffer to do us good that is love as a love and that is deep compassion and we also see the faithfulness of God of course this is throughout but God promised us what happened and he’s bringing it to pass all these things are glorious but who would have ever thought who would have ever thought that God would do it this way that God would do such a thing that he would show such love and such humility such loveliness and such beauty it is as Isaiah 53 says Lord who has believed our report and to whom has the strong arm of the Lord been revealed the Old Testament foretold that God would do this yet it was too wonderful to be fully understood and believed no one could have expected that God would reconcile man to himself by becoming a man yet that was what was completely necessary it couldn’t be any other way reconciliation could not happen any other way but this certainly is not how man would do it man would have God come in Pomp and Circumstance right into Jerusalem be born with a splendor of royalty really man would have God affirm a man’s innate goodness and congratulate man on earning God’s favor man would have God deliver man from just the temporal evils yes stop our sickness and our poverty Deliver Us from political oppression and you don’t really need to worry about sin or our hearts that’s what man would have man would rather have God deliver man so that man could actually serve idols just let us keep going after our Idols we would really appreciate that but God will have none of that God will not come in the way that man desired and not come for the purpose that man desired God will deliver man in his own incredible way and he the whole time will affirm man’s unworthiness and God’s greatness truly God’s way is far better than anything man could come could come up with in God’s way make sure that God gets all the glory so brothers and sisters behold with Wonder the astounding plan of God’s salvation and the astounding savior who was born a man to save all men now just to confirm the magnitude of what’s Happening Here in Luke 2 let’s briefly turn over to John 1.

John chapter one we’ll just look at the first 14 verses all the gospels affirm the deity of Christ but perhaps due to some of the issues of his own day John is even more explicit than the other gospels about Jesus deity and we see that even here in the beginning of John 1. so John 1 we’re going to read he won’t really analyze this passage but we’ll make a few observations on it John 1 verses 1 to 14.

here’s John’s version of describing the Incarnation of Jesus in the beginning was the word and the Word was with God and the Word was God he was in the beginning with God all things came into being through him and apart from him nothing came into being that has come into being in him was life and the life was the light of men the light shines in the Darkness and the Darkness did not comprehend it there came a man sent from God whose name was John he came as a witness to testify about the light so that all might believe through him he was not the light but he came to testify about the light there was the True Light which coming into the world enlightens every man he was in the world and the world was made through him and the world did not know him he came to his own and those who were his own did not receive him but as many as received him to them he gave the right to become children of God even to those who believe in his name who were born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of God we’ll read one more verse and the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we saw his glory glory is of the only begotten from the father full of grace and truth when Jesus was born God himself came into the world not a god the god you know probably John 1 1 from the Greek there’s no reason to supply an indefinite article a and the Word was a god no John 1 1 equates the word with God they are the same and yet they can dwell together they are the same yet different they are plural godhead they are Trinity and verse 3 makes this point even more emphatic it’s like John wants to make sure there’s no way that you can come away from this passage and not know that Jesus is God because what does he say in verse 3 all things came into being through this word through him nothing came into being without the word two ways of saying the same thing essentially what he said in verse one the only uncreated being is God and everything that was created came into being through the word so how could the word be a created being if all the things came into being through the word and nothing came into being without the word then the word is uncreated it can’t be created because it’s the one that caused everything to be created conclusion the word is God the word that dwelt with God is God so the Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses they have no leg to stand on here John will not let them the word the light God himself he took on flesh he entered this following World he dwelt with sinful even rejecting men and he manifests the truth and the glory of God our brothers and sisters this all really happened this is not some story we rehearse as part of our culture part of our tradition this is not some mere element of religion that we make sure that we have straight so that we can feel good about ourselves I know the story of Jesus well no this is history God actually did this he sent his son into the world to save Sinners Like You and Me isn’t that not wondrous we did not deserve it we didn’t deserve this here’s what we did deserve we deserve God sending Jesus into the world to destroy us we deserve God to announce peace not by sending an advocate on our behalf but by sending his Commander to wipe us out he would have made peace that way that’s the way he could have made peace but that is not what God did that’s not what God did in Luke 2 tells us that’s not what good what God did he instead sent he sent his son to become a man to save all men who would have ever thought it who could have ever imagined it how beautiful how glorious so how should we apply this word and many things we could say I want to highlight Five Points of application but I urge you to think more on this yourself think other ways this account makes a difference in your life number one we should believe this message was declared to the Shepherds that they might believe the same was true of the announcement made to Zacharias and to Mary they heard what God was about to do we hear what God has already done but our response should be the same as what was expected of them we must believe the good news we don’t work for it we can’t work for it simply to believe it we should not dawdle the Shepherds heard this word they hurried to Bethlehem to see the child we too must hurry to believe there’s no reason to wait a reason to remain in darkness second we should praise God what God has done is glorious and deserves praise not just in your heart but publicly the angels are praising God here the shepherds are praising God here we too should be praising God extol the greatness of God declare his wondrous Works give thanks in the Assembly of Believers as the psalmist says praise is fitting for the upright we should be giving thanks we should be giving thanks publicly we should be glorifying God publicly for what he’s done number three Ponder what God has done is so profound that it deserves way more of your mental attention than we have in this hour of Sunday School be like Mary be like those who heard the shepherd’s message treasure Ponder this truth Ponder this text think about what God has done consider its implications meditate on how you personally are connected to the Incarnation and work of Jesus that’s not a one-time thing really that should be an ongoing habit that should be a habit for all of us we should constantly be thinking about Jesus Incarnation and work on our behalf number four Proclaim lots of Peace here notice not all mrps God declared good news to the Shepherds but it wasn’t for them alone nor was it only for the people of Bethlehem what did God say this is for all the people it was for all the people Jesus commanded his disciples to share the good news and if you’re a disciple of Jesus that applies to you tell others how God has provided a way of Peace tell others about the Overture of peace that God has made tell them that God has provided a way for Wicked Rebels to be reconciled to him for how will they know how will they believe unless we tell them but you say but I thought God was Sovereign he’s in control of all things he can save all people without my sharing a peep God is Sovereign but what does God sovereignly determined to be his means of salvation you us his people Romans says how will they believe on him and whom they have not heard and now they hear without a preacher and how will they preach unless someone is sent behold how beautiful are the feet of those who announce good news brothers and sisters evangelism is obedience F4 let us tell people the good news but you say but they’ll never believe it they’ll only reject me and they’ll persecute me I don’t want to suffer like that for no reason well some will reject your message many of them but some will not because God says all that the father gives me will come to me God has laid the elect in your life paths you’re going to meet people who are elect and as you share the good news those people will believe and they will be saved you will be used by God if you seek to be obedient now you’re still going to glorify God whether that person believes or not some are merely going to be confirmed in their judgment because of your message that’s part of God’s will but don’t think that oh it’s going to be useless to share the message no God will draw those that he’s known from the foundation of the world we don’t know who the elect are we know that they are out there so let us obey Christ let us imitate these Shepherds that we see in this passage and joyfully Herald what God has done and then number five finally walk worthy this exhortation contains many of the others in it but what God has done is so amazing it is an unthinkable Act of mercy and love do we dare to live in such a way that does not take this truth seriously yeah God what you did in sending Jesus is great and all but it’s not enough for me to turn from my my sin I’m just going to keep going on my own way I’m going to hold on to my sin how dare we how dare we say such a thing to God yeah God the Incarnation is pretty cool but I’m really more amazed by the things of the world so if you’ll excuse me I need to get back to them how dare we how dare we say such a thing to God yeah Jesus you humbled yourself to the point of becoming a baby in a Manger in an unremarkable town of Judah but I’m not really interested in Humble service I’m not really interested in doing anything that cost me something or that makes me uncomfortable how dare we how dare we say such a thing to God you say well I don’t say that well maybe your actions do remember what Hebrews says the book of Hebrews how shall we escape God’s judgment if we neglect so great a Salvation brothers and sisters if we haven’t done so already it’s time to get serious it’s time to get serious about this truth let us be where anything less than a complete Devotion to Jesus you cannot serve two masters if you don’t follow Jesus totally then you don’t follow Jesus at all if you believe in Jesus yet continue in the Same Old Paths of sin you do not really believe and you’re not really at peace with God you cannot yet claim a part in the good news of Luke 2 if you live in such a way true Disciples of Jesus walk on a manner consistent with the greatness of the Salvation that’s been revealed so if you’re in Christ you should seek to be like your head you should seek to obey your Master’s commands such is our reasonable Service as Khalif was saying last week listen how Philippians specifically cites the Incarnation as part of our call to holiness Philippians chapter 2 verses 5 to 8.

    Philippians 2 verses 5 to 8.

have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus who although he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped or that is held on to but emptied himself taking the form of a bond servant or slave and being made in the likeness of men being found in the appearance as a man he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death even death on the cross and therefore Calvary let us walk worthy of our calling God is worthy of such worship that ends our lesson today questions or comments about what you’ve heard all right it is an incredible word that we’ve seen this morning thank the Lord that he’s revealed it to us next week we talk about Herod and we talk about the visit of the wise men and then we’ll finally tackle why do we believe that Jesus was born between six and four B four BC let’s pray as we close my God I’ve done my best to communicate how wondrous it is that you sent your son to take on flesh to dwell Among Us and to save us God I pray that you would really imprint that truth on the minds of your people it’s so easy for us to take this truth lightly it’s so easy for us out of familiarity or whatever reason to think this is not that great to not be affected by it I pray that that would not be the way this morning I pray God that your people would be really affected by this truth well that we would take seriously that this actually happened when Jesus that you actually did this that you humbled yourself to the point of becoming a baby oh God that is so great that is so merciful and so instructive oh God forgive us for where we have trifled so much in a world where we have just wasted ourselves wasted our time serving idols oh Lord you deserve everything from us and it is a great way that you’ve called us to live God I pray that your people would get serious would be serious about this truth walking joyfully proclaiming your good news living a life worthy of the calling that we’ve been given thank you for your salvation your plan is So Glorious thank you that you’ve unfolded it thank you that you will conclude it by coming to the Earth by bringing us to yourself I pray that you bless the rest of the service today in our fellowship in Jesus name amen thank you

    The Messiah’s Messengers

Answers Bible Curriculum Year 3 Quarter 1 Lesson 7

This week in Sunday school, we begin the birth narrative of Jesus by looking at the announcements God made via Gabriel to Zacharias and Mary. What exactly did Gabriel declare? How do Gabriel’s words connect with the Old Testament? What can we learn from Zacharias’ and Mary’s reactions? How do these passages connect with Luke’s overall purpose in His Gospel? We’ll consider these questions and more.

Our main text for Sunday school will be Luke 1:1-45.

all right well let’s begin good morning Calvary we’ve finished our introductory our introduction to the New Testament and to the Gospels today we start our more specific study of the words and events of the gospels themselves and we start with the birth Narrative of Jesus in the account of Jesus birth Begins by describing the days before Jesus was born which God announced what he was about to do that’s the subject of our lesson today entitled The messiah’s Messengers last week we considered certain sometimes made against the New Testament especially the charge that the 27 books of the New Testament were arbitrarily decided no good reason why certain gospels like infancy Gospel of Thomas or the Gospel of Judas were rejected and no good reason well why our four gospels and the other New Testament books were included but after hearing their presentation from Brian Edwards and after looking ourselves at some of the excerpts from the two rejected gospels we see that this objection that or this objection and many related to it have no basis in reality there’s absolutely no basis for this criticism we can trust our 27 New Testament books to be God’s only revelation be on the old beyond the Old Testament by the way if you missed the video from last week or if you’d like to watch it again or share it with somebody it is available online you can go to Answers in Genesis website just type in the title of the video y66 or you can just copy the URL that I have displayed on this slide so answers in genesis.org media video slash Bible slash why 166.

but now let’s turn to the birth Narrative of Jesus as given in the Gospel of Luke we are perhaps familiar with this section of scripture since it is often read at Christmas time but we must be aware the great danger of familiar texts texts that feel familiar to us because we often think we know them better than we actually do and we stop paying attention to what they actually say so we don’t want to do that the birth narrative is in Luke 1 is unique among the Gospels Luke is the only one who tells us about these events and so we want to answer the following questions today why does Luke record these events for us how does their inclusion connect with the overall purpose of Luke’s gospel and how should our lives be changed from what we read in the beginning part of Luke 1.

here’s our plan for answering those questions we’re going to move through our passage we’ll read and observe Luke 1 5-25 and we’ll read and observe the second section Luke 126 to 4 5 or interpretation of those passages and questions that arise from them and then we’ll consider application for ourselves let’s pray before we continue a great God thank you for this time this opportunity to hear more from your word I pray that you’d give me the ability to explain it and explain it well and accurately pray that you’d help the people to understand it and help us all Lord to apply it to be impacted by it please do that by your spirit in Jesus name amen all right open your Bibles please to Luke chapter one that’ll put you if you’re using a few Bible on page 1018.

Luke chapter one now wait for that slide we’re going to start in Luke 1 5 but before we read let’s remind ourselves of this book’s background as revealed in the first four verses and from what we book as a whole this is by Luke Gentile Christian physician associate of Paul writes the most excellent Theophilus also a gentile Christian and Luke writes so that Theophilus and those like him will know the exact truth of what taught regarding the Jesus Christ both the gospel this gospel and the book of Acts are committed to one purpose they are intent on giving the exact truth about Jesus and why again might Gentile Christians many of whom were saved under the ministry of Paul have needed to know such truth more exactly what kind of issues were they facing where knowing the truth about Jesus and his message is very important for them to know yeah Rob okay that’s certainly true just seeing the connection between Old Testament and the New Testament how Jesus fulfills prophecies and knowing what Jesus has done is going to be beneficial for all believers certainly true but Luke writes with a specific bench and there are certain issues that Gentile Christians were facing uniquely that Luke’s gospel used to answer what are you going to say Steve yeah so both those things are certainly true thanks Steve we have the same idea that Paul has where he’s showing that the Gentiles are included in the same salvation as the Jews that that was um uh that there isn’t a need for Gentiles to become Jews remember that’s what Paul deals with in Galatians these judaizer saying you got to be circumcised you got to keep the law you basically have to come become a Jew if you’re going to be saved Gentiles are hearing that they’re being uh persecuted sometimes by the Romans or by the Jews they are dealing with false teaching just as you were talking about Steve they’re people who may be making other claims about Jesus so Jesus wasn’t really a man but Jesus wasn’t really God or you can believe in Jesus and then live however you want we know that they Paul was dealing with that in the books of Corinthians and even the Apostle John was dealing with that in his letters so there’s there’s reasons why Gentiles as kind of newcomers to the truth and newcomers to the gospel they need Assurance they need greater confidence and what actually happened so they know that they’re included and so that they actually know what is the true message and they know how they’re supposed to live in light of the gospel and we so we see these these issues in the other books the New Testament and so I argued both in Luke and acts that Luke gives his gospel or he shows that the Gospel According to Paul under which many of these Gentiles were saved is the same Gospel According To Jesus and that God’s plan for salvation is for all men Jew and Gentile man and woman slaver free formerly religious or formerly irreligious and it has never changed it has always been God’s plan salvation for all men has always been by faith alone producing holy fruit of repentance is a life of obedience to Jesus when we specifically talked about the four gospels how each writer gives his own emphasis I characterize Luke’s gospel emphasis in this way Jesus is the man who came to save all men Jesus says the man who came to save all man and so that time that ties in with acts but unique to Luke’s gospel so we want to keep that background information in mind so we don’t read these passages as if they’re just random accounts of interesting parts of Jesus life now these are special because they somehow connect with the background and purpose of Luke that we’ve previously looked at how how are these narratives connected to that purpose showing God’s Plan of Salvation is for all men and hasn’t changed you can be confident in it all right actually start reading our first section Luke 1 5 to 25.

Luke 1 verse 5 to 25 and please follow along as I read in the days of Herod king of June there was a priest named Zacharias of the division of abijah and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron and her name was Elizabeth the righteous in the sight of God walking blamelessly in all the Commandments and requirements of the Lord but they had no child because Elizabeth was Barren and they were both advanced in years now it happened that while he was performing his Priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division according to the custom of the Priestly office chosen by lot to enter the Temple of the Lord and burn incense and the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering and an angel the Lord appeared to him standing to the right of the altar of incense Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel and fear gripped him but the angel said to him do not be afraid Zacharias for your petition has been heard and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son and you will give him the name John you will have joy and gladness and many Will Rejoice at his birth for he will be great in the sight of the Lord you will drink no wine or liquor and you will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb and he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God it is he who will go as a forerunner before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord Zachariah said to the angel How Will I Know This for certain for I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years the angel answered and it and said to him I am Gabriel who stands in the presence of God and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news and behold you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their proper time the people were waiting for Zacharias and were wondering at his delay in the temple but when he came out he was unable to speak to them and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple and he kept making signs to them and remained a mute on the days of his Priestly service were ended he went back home after these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant she kept herself in seclusion for five months saying this is the way the Lord has dealt with me and the days when he looked with favor upon me disgrace among men all right let’s begin our look at this section with simple observations we’re in the days of Herod that is or the days of Herod the King of Judea there are multiple herods in the Bible but this is Herod the Great he’s an Edomite and he is a client king of Rome ruling the whole area of Palestine it’s after his death that the land of Judea becomes parceled Out Among his sons and among other Roman governors herod’s sons are also named Herod hence the confusion with some of the other herods here’s the description of Zacharias and Elizabeth we hear that they are from the Priestly clan of Aaron both of them they are righteous they are old and they are barren no children now what was barrenness considered to be a sign of in those days we’ve seen this in other lessons baroness was seen as a sign of God’s disfavor it’s a sign of Shame it’s a sign of judgment and there are verses in the Old Testament that link barrenness for Israel with God’s judgment you turn away from God this is one of the things that’s going to happen your people your your wives are going to be barren but where else in the Bible have we seen righteous or especially called ones from God but they are also barren someone said what was that say it again please yeah Sarah Abraham and Sarah who else Hannah and elkana Hannah was Barren and we could also add Isaac and Rebecca and Jacob and Rachel actually the first three Patriarchs all had wives who had an issue of bareness too these were not judged people This was um they were especially confidential with God and they were righteous so public feeling though about baroness was still very much oh that’s a sign of God’s disfavor because then we see that in verse 25 she says my the Lord is going to take away my shame Zacharias is performing his Priestly service and he’s chosen by lot to burn incense in the temple now when was incense burned in the temple it was burned every day twice a day that was actually one of the provisions of the law for the priest to do it was to be incense for burning before the Lord perpetually right in the morning and at Twilight so at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day there is to be incense lit and burned before the Lord now where was the incense burned uh yes Rob that’s right it’s right in front of the veil and you can see it in the little picture here that Ultra somewhat small altar golden altar it’s right before the veil right before the holy of holies that’s what the incense was to be burned now this Burning this Perpetual burning of the incense will a sign of God’s glory the glory due to him it was a sign of atonement the incense had a somewhat of a covering function and Israel’s sins were symbolically being covered by God an incense is also linked with prayer especially in the New Testament now there were many priests at this time so not every priest was needed to serve in the temple or even to burn the incense but Zacharias just happened to be chosen to be the one to burn incense in the temple on this particular day they’ve been doing it for the whole week usually Priestly service was for a week now this was a pretty regular event at the temple but not a regular event for a priest not every priest would get to burn incense even in his lifetime Zacharias would have considered this occasion a high point in his Priestly Ministry and was probably preparing for a very worshipful and awe-filled experience and he sure got one now Zacharias goes into burn incense probably in the morning and notice what he sees an angel of God standing right next to the altar the right of the altar of incest now what was this angel now remember that the Bible mentions different kinds of angelic beings you have the cherubim the seraphim there’s also an archangel but the term angel itself in both the Old Testament and the New Testament it simply means messenger often delivering messages is exactly what God’s angels do and though angels can be beautiful and even dazzling in appearance in the Bible the Bible usually describes angels as appearing like men often men wearing white and contrary to centuries of Christian religious art and educational material no wings no wings on most Angelic beings when they appear in the Bible and we’re not given a description of the Angel here but he probably appeared like the Angels normally appeared as a man wearing white whatever his appearance the fact that he was suddenly there next to the altar no one else was in the temple no one else was supposed to be in the temple besides Zacharias Phil Zacharias with fear but also typical all right that is typical in the Bible when people meet Angels they’re often afraid but also typical is the Angelic response and if the first thing we hear the angels say to Zacharias do not be afraid this is not a meeting for you to be afraid Zacharias this is a good meeting and he also gives a reason why shouldn’t she be afraid for your petition has been heard your request the request you made to God has been heard what request well let’s consider the rest of the passage Elizabeth I mean uh Angel continues to say your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son and you will name him John John by the way comes from the Hebrew johannan meaning graced by Yahweh or Yahweh is gracious this is the name determined by the angel determined by God it’s not just a hat Angel also says you will have joy and gladness at his birth many Will Rejoice with you he will be great he will drink no wine or alcohol and we see a link to other parts of the Bible here who else in the Old Testament was forbidden from drinking wine or alcohol I was part of the Nazarite bound now that was not usually intended as a permanent thing it was a temporary way of showing worship and Devotion to God but there were one person maybe two people who in the Bible were permanent nazarites does anybody know who Samson was certainly one perhaps Samuel as well Samuel or Samson here’s the full Nazarite description no wine no liquor no cutting his hair Samuel was only said to have not have his hair cut when Hannah prays to God she says oh if you would let me have a kid I will devote him to you and a razor will never come near his head she doesn’t say anything about wine but that may have been implied so there’s a connection here with those Old Testament people and the Nazarite vow he also says the angel also says he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb he will turn many in Israel back to God and he will go before God as as a forerunner in the spirit and power of Elijah to make ready of people prepared for the Lord now this should sound very familiar wherever it recently heard this language in the Old Testament say that again please that’s right Malachi this is from the one that actually last things said in Malachi Malachi 4 verses 5 and 6. so the Angel’s saying John is going to be fulfillment of that very late prophetic word now talk about amazing promises imagine you received a message like this from God about your own kid before you was even conceived isn’t this exactly what you would want in a kid wow my kid’s gonna grow up to be great he’s not only going to be great but he’s going to be very uh used by God he’s going to draw my people back to God this is amazing and not only is this great news for Zacharias and Elizabeth but it’s great news for Israel because that means that those promises given by God in the Old Testament they’re about to be fulfilled they’re on their way to fulfillment God is going to come because here’s the Forerunner but notice zacharias’s response How will I know that this is true since my wife and I are pretty old that is to say what will be the sign to me that what you say will really happen now where else have we in the Bible seen someone questioning or laughing at a promise about a son being born due to old age exactly back to Abraham and Sarah there’s a lot of parallels here but both of them laughed you may remember when they heard that they were going to have a kid in their old age now notice the Angels somewhat surprising response to Zacharias he basically says let me tell you who I am I am Gabriel I stand in the presence of God and I was I would I would have news to you Gabriel by the way means strong man of God or God is my strength he gives him that name an angel though does give a sign along with this rebuke the sign is Zacharias you will be silent until the child is born so you’ll get your sign but why this sign angel said you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their proper time Zacharias comes back outside people realize he’s seen a vision from God he finishes his briefly service which I feel like must have been interesting he had to continue doing his job for probably the whole week before he went back home as a mute priest but he goes home and soon Elizabeth is pregnant she decides to seclude herself saying God has looked upon me favorably to take away my disgrace the takeaway the shame that comes with bareness among my people so we’ve made our observations on this passage but before we interpret this section of text it will be useful if we combine it with observations the next passage so let’s move on to the next one we’re now going to read verses 26 to 45 of the same chapter what we’ll see another announcement let’s read verse 26.

now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph of the descendants of David and the virgin’s name was Mary and coming in he said to her greetings favored one the Lord is with you it was very perplexed at this and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was said to her do not be afraid Mary you have found favor with God and behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you shall name him Jesus he will be great and will be called the son of the most high and the Lord God will give him the Throne of his father David and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever and his kingdom will have no end Mary said to the angel how can this be since I am a virgin the angel answered and said to her the holy spirit will come upon you and the power of the most high will overshadow you and for that reason the holy child shall be called the son of God and behold even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age and she who was called Barren is now in her sixth month four nothing will be impossible with God and Mary said behold the bond slave of the Lord may it be done to me according to your word and the angel departed from her now this time area Rose and went in a hurry to the Hill Country to a city of Judah and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting the baby leaped in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she cried out with a loud voice and said blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb and how has it happened to me that the mother of my Lord would come to me for behold when the sound of your greeting reached my ears that baby leaped in my womb for joy and blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord all right let’s observe this section it says here that we’re in the sixth month sixth month of what or six months since what yeah Elizabeth’s pregnancy we’re now talking about the sixth month of herod’s Reign this is the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy so we not only move forward a little bit in time but we also move in location we move from Jerusalem in Judea to Nazareth that is from Central Israel to the Northeast section of Galilee from a prestigious religious center of the Jews to a less respectable Town filled with Gentiles all right this is a gentile region in Nazareth we hear of Mary and Joseph and who rather than being descendants of Aaron they are notice descendants of David I said specifically here Joseph is the descendant of David but we’ll see later in the Book of Luke and Mary also as a descendant of David both of them Mary is a virgin engaged to Joseph oh remember that engagement in ancient Jewish culture was way more serious than engagement today today people can break off engagements without too much trouble but in Israel you had to get a formal divorce to break an engagement engagement was like being married except you didn’t live together and you didn’t consummate that marriage it was very very serious been married situation they contracted in marriage now the marriageable age for young virgins at this time in both Jewish and Greco-Roman culture was about 12 to 15 years old I know that sounds very very young to us but that’s when someone became a woman in the eyes of the people that of that time that was when a woman could bear children so Mary was probably quite young early teens now according to certain rabbinic writings Jewish men were expected to marry at about age 18 or even 20. so Joseph 2 was probably a young man though a little older than Mary Gabriel appears to marry presumably privately at her house and he greets her calling her favored one that is the one who has received Grace unmerited favor from God now this greeting by the way Hail Mary full of grace that would be another way to translate it is where we see the phrase in Catholicism things that Catholics repeat that comes from The Vulgate translation of this passage Jerome in the late 300s A.D he used the phrase full of grace word that is translated for us favored one full of grace is not necessarily an inaccurate translation but it’s unfortunate because it leaves open the idea that Mary herself has Grace to give others rather than she has received Grace from God you know that plays into the Catholic theology we know today but she has received Grace she is full of grace received from God and Gabriel also tells Mary the Lord is with you that’s another way of saying that you have the Lord’s favor now note Mary’s reaction she’s very perplexed She’s continually in a state of pondering and wondering what kind of salutation or what kind of greeting this is what does it mean to me that an angel has appeared and said thus to me but again we get an Angelic reassurance do not be afraid why for you have found favor with god wow third time we’ve heard this idea you have found favor God is showing you unmerited favor I must catalog the rest of this initial message what’s what’s involved with this favor from God well you will conceive and bear a son and you shall name him Jesus and Jesus is our version of the Greek Jesus and when it comes from the Hebrew Joshua or Yeshua which means salvation or Yahweh saves says this will be the name of the son you will bear and he will be great he will be called the son of the most high God will give him your son the Throne of his forefather David her son will reign over Israel forever his kingdom will be forever now again talk about stunning Revelation the word of Zacharias the word to Zacharias about John was amazing you would have been floored if you were in that situation and you heard that kind of word from God but this is even more amazing imagine you were to hear this from God your son who isn’t even conceived yet he he is going to be the son of the most high he’s going to rule Israel forever what an incredible child to have what great news for Mary and for his but Mary also has a question how can this be since I’m a virgin well news Gabriel’s answer this time there is no rebuke just an explanation and even a sign Gabriel tells Mary that the holy spirit will cause her to become pregnant with divine power and notice the effect notice the word for for that reason the holy child will be called the son of God because he’s going to be born in this special way he will be called the son of God Gabriel’s telling Mary you will become pregnant without any man’s influence and that is why your child will be called holy the son of God by the way it’s not noted by Luke here it is in Matthew but where was there a prophecy about a virgin being with child and that that child would be called Emmanuel the book of Isaiah chapter 7 Isaiah 7 14. that’s where we see the Virgin birth prophecy but Gabriel also gives it a sign a waved it be encouraged in her belief he says by the way your relative Elizabeth is also miraculously pregnant she was previously Barren she’s already in her sixth month and then the final explanation nothing will be impossible with God now unlike Zacharias who due to his muteness couldn’t respond to the angel Mary responds and notice what she said she said she says behold the bond slave of the Lord but literally you are looking at the female slave of the Lord she confesses herself to be God’s slave and she says may it be done to me according to your word let these things happen just as you have said so after this incredible announcement where does Mary Go to a relative Elizabeth goes to one of the cities of Judah where Elizabeth lives and upon Mary’s entry and at the sound of her greeting to Elizabeth John leaps and Elizabeth’s womb out of joy and Elizabeth prophesied by the Holy Spirit blessed are you Mary among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb how is it that I get to have you a mother of my Lord to visit me and then notice the last statement from Elizabeth blessed is she who believed and the Fulfillment of what God announced to her okay having made all these observations let’s start asking some interpretation questions what was the petition of Zacharias that Gabriel declared God had heard it must be a prayer for the child that makes the most sense in the passage because he says immediately right after your petition has been heard and your wife will bear a son your wife will bear you a son so God is answering that prayer even that prayer that seemed impossible what does it mean that John will be filled with Spirit from his mother’s womb want to give it a shot Rob well it’s it’s interesting that you say that so you mentioned that it could could mean salvation but there were people filled with the Holy Spirit who weren’t saved those are both true in the New Testament the holy spirit’s coming is often linked with salvation but we do know that the Holy Spirit the indwelling of the holy spirit is also connected with empowerment empowerment for Ministry on God’s behalf I think we’re probably looking at both things here that we’re having John being empowered but there’s also the Lord saving John by putting his Spirit into him at at a young age I think this is certainly very a unique thing how is that possible in a child without full understanding oh that’s a miraculous work of God and it’s a unilateral work God didn’t ask John for permission God didn’t respond to John’s will God just puts his Spirit there we can always see that Spirit manifesting itself because what does babe John do he leaps in the womb for Joy because he recognizes by the holy spirit that his Lord Son of God has just come into the same house I think there’s an element of Salvation here certainly there’s an element of empowerment for Ministry others would also say that this is salvation related but God was doing this very special thing for John I don’t think there’s anybody else in the Bible who’s quite like but that’s what God decided to do another question why was Zacharias tribute for his question Mary was not I think there’s a hand in the back yeah yeah certainly we can point to a number of things in this passage that show there’s a difference between these two questions and there’s a difference between these two situations one the angel makes clear that the root of zechariah’s question is unbelief because he says to him this is going to be the sign to you because you did not believe but we’re here Mary my Elizabeth in verse 45 bless the she who believed so whatever difference is in their situation Mary believed Zacharias didn’t Zechariah didn’t fully believe but we can also notice the difference between the wording of the two questions Zechariah says How Will I Know Mary says how can this be so Mary was asking how as you were saying Roy how aversion birth conception could be accomplished while Zacharias knew how his Miracle could be accomplished but he wanted to know whether it would be accomplished it wasn’t asking how you’re just wondering if he could really be sure note that there is a precedent also for zachariased the situation as we noted Barren couples in the Old Testament even Abraham and Sarah they were able to have a kid because of God’s miraculous work but there’s not been a precedent for what’s going to happen with Mary never before has a child been born without a sexual Union without sexual input from another person this is a unique situation we could also point to Zacharias is a priest he’s an old mature priest charged with a bang and teaching the scripture and he certainly should have known better than to doubt the Lord’s word regarding this this situation with barrenness is the whole Old Testament to look at for that especially the first five books Mary was to know in obey scripture too but her situation wasn’t as culpable and as Gabriel shows when he describes the sign he’s giving to Zacharias Gabriel acknowledges that his mere appearance and his delivery of his message to Zacharias was enough for belief no need a sign Zacharias to believe he gives a sign and then even Mary gets a sign unasked for but the angel was to be enough to get a message from God was to be enough to be believed so certainly some differences in the situation but ultimately Zacharias was doubting Mary doesn’t seem to be doing that she believes when the question in what way was Mary favored by God the angel emphasizes to her three times the Lord’s with you you’re highly favored you have God’s favor how in what way was Mary favored by God yes Steve yeah that’s it right there yeah this isn’t like oh I’m giving you this thing because you’ve earned it by your own good works and your and your own favorableness no you’re saying I’m doing this thing for you because I’m showing you unmerited favorite and what’s this thing you’re going to Bear the Son of God you’re going to Bear the Messiah so notice there’s a direct connection between the first thing the angel announces and what comes afterwards it says Zacharias your petition has been heard you’re gonna have a son well with a petition it was about having a son Mary you’re highly favored how are you highly favored you’re gonna bear a son you’re gonna bear the Son of God you’re going to Bear the Messiah this was a great position of privilege Mary’s not the dispenser of Grace by our good works she’s rich he’s receptacle of God’s Grace by his good work and this grace is going to manifest itself in burying the Messiah there’s no greater honor no greater privilege No Greater Joy than that we didn’t read it but if we go down to verse 46 and we look at the song that Mary declares to Elizabeth about her situation it’s all about look at What the Lord Has Done For Me she understands that she has received the unmerited favor from God and and being the one to Bear the Messiah and this connects with her attitude what is Mary man Mary’s attitude toward the Revelation given her oh that goes to the next slide what kind of attitude is she displaying when she says behold the bond slave of the Lord may it be done to me according to your word what we’re seeing is humble and grateful submission she’s submitting to the Lord’s word now as a young woman pregnant out of official wedlock even though betrothed Mary was probably going to experience some derision from her own people and perhaps even Joseph doesn’t understand she risks having the marriage broken off or her being exposed to the community in which she would be stoned or at least shunned but there’s not a trace of fear self-pity or complaints in Mary she simply is astounded that she a no-name girl from Nazareth was gonna supernaturally bear the Son of God and king of Israel what does a little suffering compared to the amazingness of what God was going to accomplish for her and for Israel and we also see that in her song starting in verse 46 but I’ll have time to look at it right now but she’s just glad she’s just amazed she’s not feeling bad for herself at all you may have noticed that these announcements have a lot in common announcement of Zacharias announcement to Mary they’re both in the angel Gabriel they both are in sudden appearances they both initially cause fear they both feature then reassurance both feature promises about a son to be born both future promises about the greatness of that son and both involve Joy but there are some important differences John will be born to an old Barren couple but Jesus will be born of the Holy Spirit John will turn people back to God but Jesus will be the son of God John will prepare the people for God that Jesus will rule the kingdom of God forever so when showing similarities but also highlighting the differences what does Luke emphasize about the relationship of John and Jesus how do they compare yes Roy okay those things that you’re saying are certainly all true that there’s a we do see that there’s a kind of like a I almost want to say amerism so marism is when you see two extremes you see two things um the legacy on one side one extreme the other side but by highlighting them both everything in between is counted so we have very old couple they’re very young couple woman and they’re both involved in God’s Redemptive plan and that does connect with one of the themes of Luke which is that salvation is for all people women included they’re they’re a huge part of God salvation plan people who are outcasts Society people who maybe shamed otherwise as even righteous Elizabeth and Zacharias were as people who were barren so there’s that and you also mentioned that they have some sort of uh relationship by Blood Mary and Elizabeth that’s true and they were both going to be used as part of God’s Redemptive plan for Israel but those are highlighting some of the similarities between them I want to ask more about the difference what difference does does Luke want us to understand between John and Jesus are you going to say something to me that’s also true we have fulfillments in the Old Testament scripture not um certainly alluded to the language is being used here doesn’t take time to say and this is in fulfillment of the scripture as his audience becomes more familiar with scripture they would have noticed that I’m just basically getting at a basic Point here who’s greater between the two it’s clearly Jesus it’s not that John’s not great the angel says he will be great John is great but Jesus is greater Forerunner is great but the one who’s really great is the king Son of God they’ll both be great but Jesus is greater another question now we’re getting a little bit more complicated here why is it important for Jesus to be virgin born a couple ways we can answer this go ahead Steve yeah I think those are both critical elements we can at least point to three things or did you want to add something else wrong can you say that again yeah I think that’s also true yeah salvation is fully of God as you were saying Steve one of the reasons why it must be virgin born is because that’s the phone with a prophecy I do think you’re right that it does connect with Genesis 3 and the announcing made to the woman after after the fall it will be through the seed of the women all right maybe the woman will be opposed by the seat of the serpent but the seed of the woman will crush the Serpent’s head now it’s specifically the seed of the woman not the seed of Adam so that is a kind of an interesting difference perhaps finding a fulfillment specifically in a virgin birth Matt or Isaiah 7 is more explicit yeah the Messiah is to be original born so one of the reasons we need the Virgin birth is fulfillment of Prophecy also even here in this passage what does Gabriel say it says one of the effects of the child being born only of a Virgin by the holy spirit is that he will be called The Son of God it’s critical that he’s virgin born to establish his identity he will the Son of God he really is God and yet he also is human you have to have both of those things and that’s only accomplished by the Virgin birth he is fully God but he’s fully human but as you’re also saying Steve and this connects with what you were saying rob we need a second atom we need a second representative for Humanity because otherwise all Humanity even the son son of God who would come in Adam’s line would be polluted because the seed of Adam inherits what their head obtained for all of them which is for Adam guilt in a sinful nature since Adam he was the head and representative of all those who came after him if Jesus were born of Adam how could he have avoided the imputed guilt and sinful nature that came from his forefather so that’s why save mankind a new atom was necessary a second Adam to establish a righteous line so that those who are born again in this Adam in Jesus would receive what Jesus imputes that is life righteousness and salvation let those in the line of Jesus obtain a new head a new representative a new forefather in a sense in Adam were the first fruits the first real atom the first fruits of sin guilt and death for all his descendants but in Jesus is the first fruits of righteousness life and Resurrection for all is descendants for all his children Paul describes it this way in the Book of Romans I’m just going to quote three verses from there Romans 5 verses 12 and 13 and then verse 17 Paul says therefore Justice through one man’s sin entered into the world and death through sin and so death spread to all men because all sins nevertheless death ran from Adam until Moses even over those who had not sinned and the likeness of the offense of Adam who is the type of him who was to come verse 17 verse by the transgression of the one death reigned through the one much more those who receive the abundance of Grace that the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the one Jesus Christ so Paul is saying we had death and sin spread to all men through the one man Adam he was their head he was a representative he was their forefather but hanum was a type he corresponds to the one who was going to come Jesus second and through him through this second one there is abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness which Reigns in life through Jesus Christ so for at least three reasons yes the Virgin birth was quite necessary the fulfilled prophecy it’s part of establishing the identity of the son as both God and man and as part of establishing that second Adam that we all need in order to be saved so virgin birth is quite necessary you want to add something okay yeah so I guess from one perspective he was the second man but the last time yeah there’s not going to be another representative it’s not going to be another head so that is true he is the last atom all right so now let’s come to one final interpretation question why these announcements these announcement narratives are not in the other gospels Luke has uniquely chosen to include this information why would he do that well again let’s think about the differences between announcing something and not announcing something if you get on the Highway 287 let’s say it’s the middle of the day you find that traffic is at a standstill you find yourself in this situation what is your response it’s 287 middle of the day traffic’s at a standstill on the highway what are you thinking you’re probably asking yourself what’s going on this doesn’t make sense what happened was there an accident why is everything so slow of course you may be also thinking oh this is terrible but you don’t understand what’s going on you want to know what is going on everything’s different than normal but you will have a very different response if you see a sign a month beforehand indicating that on a certain date the road will experience construction that will severely limit traffic so on the day where you encounter this traffic you’re no longer surprised because you see that this inconvenience was all part of a larger what it’s all part of a larger plan this is not random that traffic’s topic on this day did that traffic stopped on this day it was playing we knew that this was going to happen there’s a there’s a purpose there’s a plan that is undergirding what you experience in the same way by announcing beforehand what will happen not just through the profit from the Old Testament but even via an angel Gabriel to Zacharias and Mary what does God indicate about what is going to happen it is all part of his plan everything that is about to happen is part of the plan of God now as I’ve argued Luke purposefully writes his gospel to show Gentile Christians now their inclusion in the gospel of faith in Christ has always been a part of God’s plan here in Luke 1 Luke emphasizes that even before the birth of Jesus or even before the birth of his Forerunner John God’s Plan of Salvation was proceeding exactly as God intended and what kind of plan is this what is this Plan of Salvation well look at the responses of the people in this passage it’s an astounding plan it’s an amazing plan no one could ever conceive to this plan but God says no this is part of my plan it’s a joy-giving plan there’s going to be joy and gladness as part of this plan it’s also a humble exalting plan Zacharias Elizabeth they were shamed but now they’re going to be exalted by God Mary some no-name girl from Nazareth she’s being exalted by God God has poured out favor on her this is part of God’s plan this plan is going to exalt The Humble it’s also going to shame the proud which Mary goes on also to describe in her song but it is a humble exalting plant we can even say based on what Simeon says in Luke Chapter 2 and we looked at that before that this plan is a far-reaching plan it includes the Gentiles a light of Salvation to the Gentiles and the glory of God’s people Israel this is God’s plan and it’s such a great plan such a good plan what does it deserve from then it deserves belief it deserves belief isn’t that one of the main themes of this passage sacrifice you didn’t believe you should have believed blessed Mary are you because you did believe you want to I believe this is what God always planned to have happen he’s declared to you you’ve got to believe it believe in the good and never-changing gospel plan of God this is for everybody you can be old be a priest you can be a young virgin response required is the same you’ve got to believe in God’s plan and believe in God’s savior the only Savior Jesus the Messiah and we can draw out a few further applications from this that’s the way I want to close today the reapplication questions for us to consider as we think about this whole passage and think about think about its interpretation this is all part of emphasizing God’s salvation plan his unchanging plan his good plan his plan it requires belief you’ve got to ask do we believe in God’s exclusive salvation plan God has never altered his plan and neither must we alter it in the name of so-called love or tolerance or evangelism or wisdom I’m not allowed to alter this plan this plan does not allow for other plans to coexist with it nor can this plan be altered there’s no mountain top with many ways this is the plan it is the only plan and it is the good plan do we believe in God’s salvation plan as he intended and revealed do we know what his plan is not just in saving us but in what comes afterwards number two if we say we believe in God’s salvation plan do we demonstrate belief do we demonstrate that we believe in God’s salvation plan look at Mary Mary sought to understand God’s plan more and after a little explanation she humbly submitted to it she became obedient do we do this do we submit to God’s salvation plan do we present ourselves to God as Mary did saying behold the slave of the Lord I am the slave of the Lord God do to me according to the plan you have revealed I want to be submissive to this plan if we say yes I say that with Mary does your life back it up is your life back up your words do you actually obey the different commands of God or of you are Jesus words true why do you call me Lord Lord and not do what I say have you have I it’s all considered this together have you marked out certain areas of exception in your life where you will not submit to God’s plan for you I’ll submit to God’s will for me in this area but I just can’t this other one God’s just got to understand do you excuse yourself from submission to God’s plan because you don’t know what it is say well I would submit if I just knew what it was but God hasn’t revealed it do you not know that God has revealed his plan in the Bible all that you need for your life is right there both in what you should believe and what you should do you don’t need an angel to appear to you because God sent Jesus and he gave his Revelation to Jesus and the apostles you have all that you need do you demonstrate belief in God’s salvation plan and then finally are you motivated by the greatness and gladness of God’s salvation plan you want to believe you want to demonstrate that belief but connected with all that is a true and godly motivation Luke very noticeably connects the coming of Jesus with joy God’s plan is connected with joy what God has accomplished and what he will accomplish is amazing but do you see that do we see that one of the great lies of Satan is as you know that God’s way is unhappy it’s hopeless it’s dismal that is a Lie the opposite is true God is the one who shows us the only way to last in joy his plan is intensely good he cannot help but make it so because he is good but if we want to experience that goodness when you experience that Glory when experience that happiness we’ve got to let go of our worldly thinking we have to let go of our Idols we can’t tell God I do believe your way is good because I believe that your way allows me to keep this sin nope if we believed us we won’t experience God’s goodness we won’t experience the reward of God’s plan we must submit everything to the Lord we must even submit what we believe will make us happy to the Lord say God I got to be informed by you not by my own feelings not by my own wisdom I got to be informed by Your Word show me what is to make me happy let us not serve and intensely love that which is in the world that which perishes nor should we look to God as some sort of cosmic Genie to give us what we really want yes God will serve you because you’ll give me the things that I really want instead of you nor should we see God as some Cosmic Thug to be placated so we can go back to what we really love oh yeah I gotta do this God thing so get him off my back and they can pursue what I really want no no such attitudes will not experience God’s reward nor will they save from God’s judgment so we’ve got to ask ourselves have we given up both in our thinking and in our lives that which is not part of God’s good plan for us for the sake of gospel Joy you know the words of the missionary martyr Jim Elliott he is no fool to give up that which he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose have you done that are you continually doing that pray that you are praise God for revealing his salvation plan to men and bringing it to pass and yet it still will be brought to pass may he fully accomplish it by bringing us to himself establishing his kingdom on the Earth your other questions or comments please email me next week we look at the birth of Jesus itself and I will be with you in person Lord willing we start our time back in New Jersey next week and so it’ll be good to see you all let me close in prayer God to thank you for this word Lord it is one that we do need to rejoice in and we need to submit to pray that you would accomplish that work in us we know we are responsible but Lord it is only by your power and help us to believe help us understand help us to be overjoyed and amazed just as just as these people were thank you so much for this salvation plan this unchanging plan that included us included Gentiles included Jews included all people but it is only through the one that you sent Jesus Christ we thank you for Jesus Christ we thank you for the love that you showed through him and pray God that we would be move to greater love for him greater belief and demonstration of that belief in lives of obedience in Jesus name amen all right see you next week

    Only One Thing is Necessary

In this sermon, Pastor Babij looks at the account of Jesus’ first visit to Mary and Martha. Pastor Babij explains that, in the hospitality situation of these two women and in the whole Christian life, worshipful intimacy with Christ must come before all other concerns. When service becomes more important than fellowship with God, Christians commit the same three blunders as Martha: they become distracted by activity and do not listen to Christ, they charge Christ with not caring enough about them, and they easily find fault in others.

Luke chapter 10 we’re going to look at this morning Luke chapter 10 I will get back into the Gospel of Mark but today we’re gonna look at Luke chapter 10 and we’re going to look at verse 38 through verse 42 so let’s let’s look at that in our Bibles Luke chapter 10 verse 38 now as they were traveling along he entered a village and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home she had a sister called Mary who was seated at the Lord’s feet listening to his word but Martha was distracted with all her preparations and she came up to him and said Lord do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone then tell her to help me but the Lord answered and said to her Martha Martha you are worried and bothered about so many things but only one thing is necessary or mary has chosen the good part which shall not be taken away from her let’s pray father this morning has come before you I can only come before you in the only name the name of Jesus Christ he’s made the new and living way into your presence and I praise you for that and lord I do pray that as we think about just this new year that Lord there’s many things in our life that needs to be examined there’s many distractions that need to be removed and lord I pray that you would help us to do that as we consider this passage this morning that Lord you would allow us to get a lot of the baggage out of our life and I pray Lord we would be able to narrow it down to one thing and I ask you Lord Jesus that you would enable us to see those things that we need to change discard and take on for the sake of growing and godly and holiness growing in intimacy with you and I pray this this morning in Christ’s name Amen tile my message Julie this morning is only one thing necessary of course you can see where I got the title from right from the text every day every day we are confronted with so many choices it’s like how do you feel when you go into your favorite fully food establishment or you go into a New Jersey diner you pick up the menu and you find a 10-point font six page menu with so many things and food item ins to decide from it only makes it humanly impossible to process it and to decide when the waitress comes back and say are you ready to order and you’re just not ready yet because you just don’t know what to order see there’s too many selections there’s there’s a lot of choices don’t you wish things were simpler simpler than they are even our Christian lives get cluttered with too many non essentials often the Christian life is presented as something that is much more complicated than the Scriptures actually teach so in a quagmire of human opinion of philosophies flying out around out there and have religions with so many to choose from truth seems to be lost in the shuffle confusion and fear grip the heart and in the end we don’t make wise choices actually we take on more garbage and we take on more distractions so once again Scripture offers help so allow me to briefly examine some scriptural examples to help us narrow down wife’s choices before I move into the main text which I read this morning notice with me the singular goal in the main focus of each of these Bible passages before I look at the loop text for example in some 27 in verse number 4 if you like to turn there you are welcome to but if you are just listening at this particular point then I’ll read it to you because in Psalms chapter 27 verse number 4 there is one desire that he is seeking and notice what it says and I want you to highlight the one thing it says one thing I ask from the Lord that I shall seek that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life that’s what he asks now why does he ask and seek the presence of the Lord for two reasons in the passage verse 4 to behold the beauty of the Lord and then secondly to meditate in his temple so that’s one desire worth seeking a second passage is found in the Gospel of John and it’s one conviction worth keeping we’re in John chapter 9 verse 25 it says then he answered and then he answered whether he is a sinner I do not know one thing I do know that though I was blind now I see again it’s limited down to one thing the blind man is saying I know I never met anyone like Jesus Christ he did something for me no one has ever done or could have done so here is a conviction of knowing that you were transferred from the realm of blindness to the realm of sight and no one can convince this man otherwise if that’s truly the case in our own life once we know the we have been moved from darkness to light no one can convince us because scripture has convicted of us of that very truth so there’s one conviction worth keeping and then in our home group book today we’ll see that there’s one goal worth pursuing in Philippians chapter 3 verse 13 where it says brethren I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet but one thing I do forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead I press on toward the goal through the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus so Paul’s one goal is to press on to reach the goal and several things need to be done for that to happen one of them is to forget not allowing the past to him from reaching that goal and then secondly the very reaching of it it’s not allowing the uncertainties of the future to stop him from reaching that goal in the very word for reaching is the word to be stretched out it’s a picture of a runner bending forward his hands out steps stretched out and his eyes fixed on the goal see for the believer it is the one goal of moving upward moving heavenward moving Christ word the goal is Christ the goal is heaven the goal is to be with him and then there is in mark chapter 10 verse 21 one exchange worth making where it says there in mark 10 21 looking at him Jesus felt a love for him and said to him one thing you lack go and sell all your you possess and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven and come follow me meaning that exchanging every thing one thought had worth for making them right with God and laying them aside for the only one who could give you worth before the father and that’s Christ alone see this brings me now to the text I want to look at this morning because all of those are emphasized by one thing I do one thing I pursue one exchange is worth making see one thing is desire is worth seeking this this this this understanding of taking life and narrowing it down to the bare basics and this the the one thing that we ought to do for the sake of our own spiritual life and health so that brings me this morning to our text a very familiar narrative in the New Testament and of course found right here in Luke chapter Canon and beginning in verse number 38 and what we see here is this one posture worth assuming the one posture worth assuming in life and if you look at what it says in verse number 38 it says now as they were traveling along he entered a village and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home now that sets up the narrative for us it’s not every day that you can invite Jesus into your home Martha had that opportunity so here is the Lord of Heaven sitting in Martha’s living room now Martha’s home is of course is in Bethany and Bethany is about two miles from Jerusalem and when she invited Jesus into her home she unexpectedly also invited 12 of his rifles now imagine 13 people dropping in on you for dinner and you’re not ready I mean you can grab a few cans of tuna and whatever items you have and I know we’ve done this before right and see what we can come up with and maybe that’s what Martha was thinking because there’s no refrigeration back then there’s no you can’t go to your freezer and and in your microwave and defrost anything you’ve got to have fresh stuff and if you don’t have it and you’re not ready then it could be really a panic and so I’m in fact admittedly it would be a stress producing situation for most of us immediately though the narrative brings to our attention the reaction of the two sisters in this situation and we learn a lot from these sisters what’s Martha doing well it says in verse number forty but Martha was distracted with all her preparations so in other words she gets right to the task of preparing an acceptable meal for to feed everyone on that particular day she’s overboard overburdened by the task she is overwhelmed by the Herculean task of hospitality that must be displayed on that particular day she wants to do her best now she may have assumed that her sister Mary would get right in there with her roll up her sleeves and help her with this huge task however that was not the case in fact Martha found Mary relaxing look at it says in verse number 39 she had a sister called Mary who was seated at the feet of Jesus listening to his word all right now of course as you read on in this particular narrative you noticed that certain things are very much highlighted see Martha is scurrying around she’s not listening to Jesus word she is serving now there’s nothing wrong with serving serving in as this is an essential characteristic of all of Jesus disciples at all times I believe there’s there’s more more boiling in the kitchen than water in this case Martha was boiling inside so her serving attitude actually ends up stirring into sinful emotions and at that particular point this lesson becomes very practical for all of us that Jesus disciples when they place activity when they place doing things as a higher priority than listening to the Lord we will most likely likely fall into certain blunders in fact Martha actually helps us to understand those blunders to avoid in fact there’s three blunders that she makes that we can avoid and here’s the first blunder the first blunder is in found in verse number 40 where it says but Martha was distracted with all her preparations her first blunder is becoming distracted in activity to the point that listening to the Lord becomes a secondary issue not a number-one issue but a secondary issue now so that means when you stop listening you start worrying and start complaining you become doubtful that you can trust the Lord matter of fact that’s what worry portrays worry portrays that you do not trust the Lord worry twists our emotions and distorts our spiritual perception of Sirk stances and reality which usually leaves us frantic trying to keep all the plates spinning and when that happens then of course our first blunder takes place that we are not prepared for the activity because remember what James tells us he tells us to be a doer of the word you have to first be a listener of the word listening always comes first so what is the antidote for avoiding such a blunder well keep listening to the Lord that’s the antidote keep listening to the Lord as your highest priority see the one necessary thing before all activity is listening to the Lord listening to his word see seated at Jesus feet even when all this stuff and all these pressures are around you see that’s the first blunder the second blunder is found in verse number 40 also and the second blunder is this charging the Lord that he doesn’t care look what it says and she came up to him and says Lord do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone so see here it is here’s the second blunder you begin to charge God about not caring about you not caring about your circumstance that you’re in right now so see in other words Martha is bothered that the Lord seems oblivious to the fact that she is overworked that this task is too big for her and so finally she interrupts Jesus teaching and she finally says to him Lord don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving and then she says this then tell her to help me you’re not telling her to help me don’t you see she see the point is that she’s looking at the circumstances and the situation but she’s not looking at her from the spiritual glasses she ought to have on she’s more concerned about the now and not concerned about the eternal and you know what if we have not said it before at times we think it at times we think Lord you don’t care what’s going on in my life I’ve thought it when times get bad and things seems twisted and confusing I thought it and I know you’ve thought it and so when you don’t cultivate a habitual lifestyle of listening to the voice of the Lord in Scripture then what happens is we become suspicious of God’s love and care for us in fact the last book of Malachi they had that problem and the Lord called it hypocrisy that they were saying the Lord was saying I love you and they were saying Lord where have you loved us where we don’t see it in our life where you loved us this is going wrong that’s going wrong this is happening in my life I’m filled up with the anxiety I’m wound up like an eight-day clock where Lord you care for me you sometimes we make that blunder and it’s a blunder we ought to learn to avoid on a regular basis so maybe in your circumstance right now in which you are you could be tempted in thinking Lord you don’t care whatever it may be that you have been praying for a lost spouse for years and still they’re not saved that you have been praying for the salvation of your family members and relatives and there seems to be no change matter of fact there seems to be a greater distance than an opportunity your marriage possibly has taken some heavy blows over the past year and you have received very little relief in your circumstances and you begin to think Lord don’t you care about me don’t you know what’s going on or you’ve been praying for one of your children that have not come to the Lord yet and you’ve been seeking the Lord in prayer for a long time and still it doesn’t seem like they’re at all coming but actually being driven further away or maybe you were a single person and have been praying that the Lord would send some favourable prospects or way and there seems to be none in sight and you begin to think Lord I’ve been praying this a long time don’t you care about me or maybe you have been hoping and praying that the Lord would open up some new job opportunity and rescue you from the situation that you’re in on your job but it doesn’t seem like there’s anything that’s coming your way that’s a good prospect and you begin to think Lord don’t you care see mark Martha really helps us here because we have all been in this place we have all if we have not said it we’ve thought it and these circumstances and ones like them can surely tempt us to be suspicious of God’s love and care for us and that is not a good place to be in fact if we are in that place we are probably going to be filled with worry and anxiety filled with stress and filled with confusion because that’s where really where it leaves you so however your search whatever your circumstances are you have to conclude this your circle stances may not change but it surely doesn’t mean that God doesn’t care it surely does doesn’t mean that God is not demonstrating his love for you in fact with a regular diet of listening to the voice of the Lord in Scripture it will constantly remind us of the constant care that God has for his children every single day 7 days a week 24 hours a day 365 days a year God doesn’t take his eyes off his children he is in constant care for you in fact as he ascended into heaven and seated at the right hand of the Father he is making intercession for us before the father before his throne see if we begin to think like this then we won’t look around and think and see what God has been doing how he has blessed you how he has answered prayer how he is intimately involved and active in your life in all kinds of way but if you stopped listening to the Word of God then you will be listening to something else and when you start listening to yourself you’re in trouble when you start listening to the rebel inside of you the sin nature you’re in trouble and so am I see that’s why you need to talk to yourself you need to talk to yourself about truth about doctrine about what you’re learning in the Word of God you need to preach to yourself outwardly don’t care if anybody thinks you’re crazy around you just do it for your own spiritual health because believe me you let that rebel inside of you that’s in nature that’s still there you let him talk her talk you’re in deep trouble because they have nothing good to say except sin God doesn’t care well then go out here and do this go what do what you like go do it you used to do go find your old friends where you used to have fun go do see he’ll convince you against what you know is right but a regular constant exposure to the voice of the Lord will constantly transform our minds and clean our consciences and keep that rebel inside of you at bay and the voice will be louder of the Lord then it is of that sinful nature and we know what happens that’s when you get victory over sin when you start saying no to sin because why I know God cares for me in fact like scriptures like this where it says like in Romans that whole chapter in Romans 8 but in verse number 32 he who did not spare his own son but delivered him over for us all and then it says this how will he not also with him freely give us all things who shall separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus who shall do that shall life or death or angels or principalities or power nothing we’ll see that’s where we need to be reminded so if we do get caught in that mindset in that blunder in that sinful mindset we will quickly recover we will click quickly recover and so I’ve learned this that sometimes my circumstances don’t change sometimes I let my circumstances change me but there’s one thing that has not changed God’s relationship with me because of what he’s done on my half behalf I have I may have changed but he has not he’s constantly pursuing us so here in this particular text to charge the Lord that he doesn’t care is really a grievous sin and it’s one that doesn’t help you advance in your spiritual growth and maturity it does not here’s a third blunder though and this leads into it found in verse number 40 it says this in the last part of the verse it says after he accuses Lord that don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving in other words the third blunder is you begin to find fault with others you begin to blame others it’s the whole blame shift game you know she’s the problem she should be helping me she knows better possibly Mary was Martha’s younger sister so Mary Martha most likely had the authority there and she could have pulled rank she appealed to Jesus she didn’t really go to Mary she appealed to Jesus to say the Lord tell her to help me well that doesn’t happen Mary never leaves the feet of Jesus she never lifts a finger to provide one part of serving for that meal in fact the Bible really never teaches us that they ever actually ever ate the meal and that’s not the point the point is really what comes next see when you’re not listening to the voice of the Lord in Scripture you tend to become impatient with others you tend to find fault and nitpick them and why is that because you haven’t been listening and waiting on the Lord that’s why because what you’re up to your own thoughts again you’re you’re left to your own thoughts and so see the heart of Martha is very much like our own heart yet if you look at the Lord’s gentle and kind and thoroughly clarifying rebuke to Martha you’ll see how patient he was one thing that the Lord did in this situation is that he allowed Martha to expose her heart completely he did not say one thing patiently teaching there whoever was sitting at his feet with Mary he was patiently doing me and he let Martha get it all out she laid her hard right on the table she but was their self how’s Jesus respond to her well if you look at the response in verse number 41 it says but the Lord answered and said to her Martha Martha scripture uses a repeat of something like you know truly truly Martha Martha that means you better listen in other words he had to get Martha’s attention because she was not listening and sometimes God has to get our attention yes to speak more than once to us yes to intervene more than once in our life to get our attention because we are so distracted and we think we’re not distracted that’s the deceptive part of it but he says to her Martha Martha you are worried and bothered about so many things you’ve got so much baggage in your life you’ve got to clear out that whole thing before you can even hear one thing or listen to one thing or do one thing that’s worth anything so Jesus does not what’s amazing is Jesus does not excuse her fleshly attitude he doesn’t say to her Mount Martha Martha it’s all right doesn’t say that doesn’t excuse her attitude and he does not empathize with her at all he does not at all say to her that listen Martha you’re having a bad day I know this is a tough circumstance everything’s all right no he let her see her sin he exposed the heart that she exposed to him she turned it around and let her see it so Martha was very busy she was very industrious she was a practical woman but will be forever remembered in scripture for her preoccupation I don’t think she knew that this is going to be written for all the world in the generations to come to read about you but nonetheless thank the Lord Martha did recover because in John chapter 11 when Lazarus died who comes running to Jesus first Martha Martha so it looks like Martha learned her lesson and that she learned from this situation here that even though she was going to be remembered for all her preoccupation and one thing that’s very clear about it love was not motivating Martha serving love was not motivating her serving anxiety was motivating her serving pressure was motivating her serving and see that that could quickly get us in the realm we shouldn’t be so anxiety over over what well it doesn’t say specifically but of course the circumstances and we can see ourselves in Martha she was overwhelmed by all the stuff he thought she needed to do so she can make a proper meal for her guests she missed the spiritual meal of Jesus she missed the spiritual meal of Jesus teaching that really mattered that’s what she missed and if she keeps missing it it’s not going to be healthy and beneficial for her spiritually at all in fact it was a kind of prideful anxiety how she thought maybe others would perceive her giving really precious time to things that are not wrong but are not necessary these things are not necessarily wrong or sinful but they are unnecessary they clutter your life they confuse your life they bog down your spiritual growth and they’re not necessary you can actually let them go they are distractions the urge that she had is I got to get this project done but that isn’t love and it’s not real serving at least not on the heart level it is a self-exaltation kind of a masquerading as a diligent competent productive person so what’s driving us in times like these well it could be the fear of man it could be the desire for the praise of men so what we do is we scurry around and in the process we nitin neglect the most important things and what is the most important thing what is the posture worth assuming well if you look back at verse 39 let me remind you of it here’s the posture seated and listening it is seated and listening that’s the posture that Tunes out all the unnecessary distractions all around us in verse number 39 she had a sister called Mary who was seated at the Lord’s feet listening to his word see there is the key if you are to avoid all these blunders we need to imitate Mary her devotion to the Lord she chose the one necessary thing you know when we think about that I was I stopped at Cabela’s you know the big sports store in Pennsylvania there and it was interesting we’re checking out and they handled to slip of paper and the paper was about taking a day and fasting with social media and I said this is very interesting but you know what maybe we should take that advice we need to fast all social media because how distracting is that especially when you have a phone and iPad beep and buzzing and vibrating and all kinds of thing to get your attention and you know what after a while it kind of conditions us looking at my phone when I don’t even look at my phone I’m looking at the same message that you looked at because I got another message that beeped on top of that you know what I mean and then before you know it we are distracted by the things that we ought to be doing maybe I think my own opinion is that we need to leave our iPhones and our iPads home or in our car if we’re not using them as our Bible when we come to worship and not be distracted to look at our email while the Word of God is being preached I think that would be disrespectful to the Lord to do that see I think that there are certain things we really need to consider in our life in a in a more specific way so not that when we get up in the morning if we have a routine to read the Word of God to pray and then all of a sudden you’re going to your phone first you’re going to your iPad first you go to your computer and also in your minds off distracted from where you’re going by some thing you just read maybe two sentences and you’re done you’re done unless those distractions are eliminated doesn’t mean you don’t use them is that you use them in the right way you tune out all the unnecessary distractions around you for what reason so you can listen to the Word of God now why wasn’t Mary distracted it looks like Mary was enthralled with Jesus she’s listening to Jesus teach and she’s drinking in the water of life she’s eating the bread of life she hungered so much for the Word of God that she couldn’t break away from it for one second to answer any of the distractions calling for her attention even her own sister maybe I should say that Jesus had her divined attention and when God has your divine attention there’s not many things that could distract you so is this the posture that you’re taking when getting ready to listen to the Word of God read or preached or taught you come to the Word of God hungering and thirsting because you believe that’s the one thing that you know is necessary for your soul are you gripped and captivated by Jesus Christ and what he has done knowing that you can never learn as much as you need to know about him about what he’s done about what he’s going to do are you constantly drifting off and distracted in your mind by different things and not really seated at Jesus feet not really listening to his word by the way I want you to see what posture Jesus was pleased with he commended Mary on having chosen the good portion but notice what it says in verse 42 it says but only one thing is necessary for mary has chosen the good part which shall not be taken away from her meaning this that Mary not only made the best choice she made the eternal choice that what she received from God would never be taken from her see that’s the kind of food you want to eat you want to eat eternal food you want to eat food that’s going to make you more like the Lord Jesus Christ Martha was wasting her time jesus corrected her so if you feel worried and troubled by the many cares of the world if you feel overwhelmed by task if you are easily distracted from Jesus stop and ask the Lord to help you so that you will choose the one the only one thing necessary because scripture narrows things down for us it narrows our choices down one desire worth seeking there’s nothing like the presence of God there’s one conviction worth keeping there is no one like Jesus Christ there’s one goal worth pursuing moving upward in heavenward Christ’s word there’s one exchange worth making exchanging everything you and I thought had worth for Christ alone and there’s one posture worth assuming seated and really listening to the Word of God so hopefully scripture narrow some things down for you today narrowed it down to one necessary thing now we must simply devote our time to listening and waiting on God the only issue are are you listening and by now you should have concluded that if you have been listening that the primary aspect of listening involves several things it involves reading the Word of God it involves the study of Scripture it of course it involves a little along with that listening to preaching really listening and and making note in your mind and the unpay / alright and those are the practical things that can hedge us against making any of the blunders that Martha made but are you willing to commit yourself to the practical aspects of the one necessary thing for example of reading the Bible through in a year I’ve challenged you last time to do that and I thank the Lord that as I challenge you that you bought you bought up all the one your Bibles and though I we have to order some more we need to order some more you know those Bibles but the thing that is you you’re not doing that to make a commitment that you’ll start doing that and then or intent to a disciple is to pray every day for a portion of time in adoration to the Lord and confession of sin in thanking the Lord for the things that’s giving you and supplication for others that should be a daily thing that we do and in doing that we will eliminate distractions before we do anything else and the disciple maybe possibly committing things to Mayer memory Scripture to memory so if if you take this as top priority you will commit to reading through the Bible this coming year if you take this this top priority you will practice committing to memory Scripture in fact I think in a couple weeks going to have a sign-up sheet on the back table that if you want to engage in a viable memory course we’re gonna you could put your name on that and then we’ll give you passages of scripture to read and to memorize and maybe we can meet together in groups and see if we’re you know kind of keep ourselves accountable to do that you know when I was in Bible College one of the one of the first exercises I had in one of my theology courses was that I had to read and memorize and put and actually be tested on them a hundred passages of Scripture in 16 weeks I thought it was such a daunting exercise but I ended up loving it and you know some of those passages that I memorized back then I still remember today it like got burned in my memory and so you know it’s important that see these are the practical aspects but you know what we can all do all those things in a very mechanical way but so there’s got to be a devotional aspect where you are aware that God speaks through his written word and you are ready to listen to the Lord’s voice and wait on him it’s not just coming to the Lord reading and praying it’s and listening what does go with the Lord teaching you through what you’re reading through what you’re listening through what you’ve heard preach what is he teaching you and what are you actually putting into practice are you listening to what he’s saying to you this is not just about Martha anymore this is about you and I this is about the devotional aspects of our life really listen real listening requires uninterrupted undistracted times of listening instead of talking sometimes we need to shut our mouth we talk too much and we need to listen I think if we consider the devotional aspect if you take that as a top priority you will practice to consciously refuse to let distractions of the day infringe upon your time with the Lord so text emails tweets Twitter’s phone calls and everything else has to be left second place or third place not first place and then if you take this as a top priority you’ll devote quality time to express your dependence on God depending and and and deepening your intimacy with him so the question would be what is the one necessary thing the one necessary thing is not just sitting at Jesus feet listening the one necessary thing is intimacy with God because that’s where it leads it’s not just mechanical it’s a relationship it’s an intimacy with the Lord it’s not just listening studying reading memorizing those are all practical things we can do but it’s this devotional thing where we are seeking for intimacy with God we want to know the Lord more we want to have a relationship with him all the time and we don’t want to commit the blunders that Martha committed over and over again so that’s my challenge to you for this coming year so may this year be a very spiritually productive year in your life in which you start removing the distractions and the clutter so that one necessary thing is in place this year if you can do that one thing I think that at the end of the year you’ll find a lot of spiritual growth and maturity if you can remove those distractions you’re gonna find that your focus on the Lord is going to be more crystal clear if you can do these things and both on the practical and devotional way your intimacy with Christ will become deeper and more abiding and once you get there you won’t want to leave you will not want to leave because you’re gonna get a sense of the presence of God that you cannot have any other way there is no easy three points in a poem to spiritual maturity I’m sorry there’s not and all God’s people said what let’s pray lord thank you this morning thank you Lord for your people I pray that you would bless them with the things we talked about today I pray Lord they’ve become a reality in their life I pray Lord that you would give them sober thinking this week to be able to do the things they must to be able to organize that or reorganize their life so lord their time with you and their pursuit of this one thing intimacy with you would become a reality and lord I pray that you would allow them to fight to get it to do everything they need to do to have it and I pray Lord they would experience the same response from Jesus that Mary received what she has done and what she has chosen will not be taken away from her I prayed that for us and I ask it in Jesus name amen

okay if you have your Bibles you can turn to Luke chapter 17 that’s the main passage that we’re going to be looking at this morning and it’s all if you’re not familiar with your Bible and you’re visiting with us today you can look on the back of your boat and follow along around going this morning and but today I’m really looking at with another view of the gospel of Jesus Christ from the scriptures but looking at some observations about the text that I want to I actually focus in on this morning and looking at really the 3 r’s worth 3 r’s worth remembering and those three ours are pretty simple they are ruined redemption and regeneration those are the 3 r’s that are significant really to formulate believe it or not a biblical worldview let’s pray lord this morning i do ask you to help me to lay out the word of god i pray that you would be with those who are here listening that you would make them and prepare them make them ready to receive it and i pray lord that all of us would begin to adjust our thinking to the scriptures that our view of the world our view of life would be more in line with what the Bible teaches and I pray Lord through all that you may strengthen believers and maybe for the first time draw those who do not know you to yourself I pray that this morning in Christ’s name Amen now this week we will be celebrating the holiday of Thanksgiving it’s a favorite holiday of many people and most likely because it’s not filled with all the commercialism that Christmas and Easter is filled with these days but did you know you probably did not know this originally it was a day marked by the Pilgrim Fathers fundamentally for religious purposes it was actually a day to give thanks and too fast not to eat I think we got that little bit backwards today so it was essentially a solemn in a spiritual exercise it was commemorated precisely the opposite of what transpires today that most Americans gathered together to indulge over an extravagant meal and of course enjoy competitive sports different forms of entertainment and ultimately to shop all right now according to the pilgrims though the first actually they were Calvinistic Plymouth pilgrims their first this is how their service of the day kind of fell out first they would give thanks to God for every blessing that he had bestowed upon them for that year and they really wanted to register their sense of utter indebtedness to God on that day a second thing that they would do is that they were they would employ the day to give themselves to fasting to introspection to meditation on the word of God in prayer so they gave themselves to devotional exercises which inevitably issued in repentance and Reformation changing something in your life a last thing they did they employed this day to pray for the salvation of others including the American Indians their immediate neighbors and for those they left over in Europe they also pray for the new ministers that God would give them success in their ministry ministry and or missionary endeavors and that they would continue to preach the everlasting gospel of grace of our Lord Jesus Christ usually that’s how the day went without a lot of food so is prayer and fasting or the main things so Thanksgiving was designed as really a solemn public summoning of all people to adorn themselves in sackcloth and ashes to pray to give thanks to repent both personally and as a community that example really should spy r us to do the same not necessarily on Thanksgiving but during some time during the year to do that before the Lord as for now thanks giving days are related more to stuffed turkeys rich pies creamed potatoes and family reunion feast while some may give thanks and sanctify the food and invoke the name of Jesus Christ it is hard to imagine that it will lead to repentance revival and Reformation today because it’s usually a day of enjoyment now nothing wrong with that it’s the point that I’m making is that some were down along line we have lost it’s an original intention how did that happen and we’re doing something we think they’ve done from the beginning and that’s not how they did it and we’re not doing that see the ways Thanksgiving days are spent today is of course more like what the Lord warned us about in scriptures that it is he warned us the snare would come upon the face of the whole earth on the last days now if you look on in your bulletin or if you’re in the Bible Luke chapter 20 runt 1 verse 34 and 36 it says be on guard so that your hearts will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap or it will come upon all those who dwell upon the face of all the earth and then verse 36 it says be but keep on the alert at all times praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place you stand before the Son of man so if the original intention of Thanksgiving was lost and change into something else what else could be distorted what about our whole view of life what about how we look at life could that be distorted is the way people look at life today something that would line up with the way the Lord wants us to look at life so what about your worldview how exactly do you look at your life I think you’ll be surprised this morning some of the scriptures we’re going to look at as I was thinking upon how different the pure tin worldview was in comparison to the world view most people have today it’s quite alarming we not be we may not be able to recover your original design of the first thanks living days but we surely can be challenged to adjust our worldview to be to have a more biblical worldview at least the puritans worldview could be summed up in by the 3 R’s I gave you ruin redemption and regeneration these 3 r’s rightly understood will not only help us adjust our worldview but will inform our understanding of what is really important in world history now just consider for a moment history according to the Bible is not what man has done world history or really is doing world history is what God has done what God has done to an about mankind that is the most important thing that we ought to look at when we consider history the three big things in God’s view of history is really simple Jesus coming all the Old Testament office I Jesus coming the second thing is Jesus dying everything in the Old Testament point to the cross and the last thing is jesus is coming again that’s world history right there and that’s the way God looks that world history it’s pretty simple we don’t we make things off wait to complicate it we try to think about things that’s simple and it should be simple for us as believers to think in those terms because Jesus coming happened Jesus dying happened Jesus coming again will happen so how do we live in light of Jesus coming again so then if these are what God deems most significant then that is the only history that should really matter to us now just think of it for a moment a non biblical worldview if I can narrow it down to some very simple terms a non biblical worldview would be a worldview that can be summed up really in one word and it’s the word progress a non biblical worldview believes that humanity is gradually and inevitably making forward and upward progress with its ultimate destiny of perfection in other words given enough time man can accomplish perfection that’s pretty much so that word progress is really very much in the mindset in the world view of people of most people in the world a biblical worldview is opposed to this worldview the Bible teaches that human history is marked by crisis by ruin and by judgment that is the world is heading in a downward direction it is not necessarily progressing in the way that we all think it should we think it is but when we look at the news and see what’s happening in the world and would took place in Paris we say wait a min something’s drastically wrong we are not moving forward we’re moving downward that’s what the Bible says but you know what that’s honest the Scriptures honest about reality I am so thankful about the reality of the Bible doesn’t pull any punches it tells us just the way it is and you know what I’m glad for that because when I see it just way it is then i can adjust things then I can throw things out that don’t belong in my life things that are not expedient or helpful or cause causes growth I can throw those things out and I can take on things that I’m not doing I can pursue godliness with a greater intensity when I have a view of biblical worldview so let me ask you some questions when you look at the world presently does it make you feel optimistic about the future does it make you or does it make you feel pessimistic you know I would say that it would probably make most people today pessimistic if you look at the world scene are you shocked by what you see or have you anticipated that happening and taking place like that by the events of our day with all its technological advancements things are not getting better and better I mean you just think of what Isis is doing in the Middle East and how they’re taking care of all their actually they’re living by their worldview their worldview is to someday head to Jerusalem and put their black flag on the Temple Mount that’s what their worldviews it and there and they’re carrying that out there looking for their Savior the Mahdi that’s coming they’re looking for him and what precedes him according to their profits is that black flags armies army of black flags will start taking over things in causing warfare all over the world until they reach their goal and their goal like I just said was to conquer pretty much conquer the world and take over and put Sharia law in and have Islam being the one world religion so they’re they’re carrying out their worldview would great gusto and conviction if Christians can be the same when it comes to the gospel man we can get a lot of work done we have to be very much motivated to have a mindset that the law that’s given by the Lord so we’re not entrapped by a non biblical worldview see man is in a state of ruin and has been for the past six thousand years and will remain so right up until Christ comes back there will be no change so men are going to do what they think they need to do but the emphasis in Scripture is what God does in what God said would take place at the end now let’s see what the scriptures say about the consistent state of humanity since the beginning and that state has been a state of ruined and then of course it should want us to be alert in our own life about what’s happening so we’re ready we’re ready for whatever comes we’re ready whatever happens we’re ready why because we know god’s plan we know what God is going to do in the end we have been given the Word of God to do that so let’s look at the first thing and it’s this and I want to look at Luke chapter 17 verse 26 and 27 and I want to make some observations from these scriptures this morning because the first thing is that man is in a state of ruin in other words man’s essential nature has remained the same since Adam sinned and of course fell from God and of course because Adam sinned that sin has been transmitted imputed to us and so we send to so we too are in a state of ruin now the Lord is speaking in this passage of Scripture and he’s giving some interesting instruction to his disciples about the last days but he says it and he does it with some and I think sometimes we may miss what’s a being said here in the scripture and I want you to notice in verse number 26 and this is what he says to them he says this now the first thing is he’s talking about the days of Noah and the destruction of a worldwide flood and he says in verse number 26 and just as it happened in the days of Noah so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man verse 27 they were eating they were drinking they were marrying they were given in marriage until the day that Noah entered the Ark and the flood came and destroyed them all now what we see here is God’s judgment upon man in ruin the man can’t get better because he’s a sinner he can’t go forward and upward he has to go downward because of his rebellion against God of cause of his separation from God so what we see here is God’s judgment just like in Genesis 65 remember what it says there then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth and every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually but we also see something else in this passage we see two groups of people we see those who are rescued from judgment and we see those who suffer the full wrath of God’s judgment and you know what there are no other groups these are the two groups so way back in amongst the ancient people of Noah when Noah was there and he was building the are and he was telling them that God is going to send judgment if you don’t repent of and of course he preached and preached and preached and preached and preached and preached and well judgment came right up until the last day but then I want you to notice in verse number 28 he doesn’t just say the days of Noah he goes forward in history a little bit and he talks about the days of lot alright and of course the destruction of Sodom Gomorrah and verse number 28 it was the same as happened in the days of lot they were eating they were drinking they were buying they were selling they were planting they were building verse 29 but on the day that lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all so again what we have we have man and ruin and God’s judgment upon sin again two groups of people those who are rescued from God’s judgment very few very few in Noah’s time and those who suffer the full wrath of God’s judgment so in a sense we’re looking at man in room alright that’s our worldview that’s how we see in Scripture that’s reality so in each historical event man’s nature produces the same manifestations and results no matter where on the historical grid they may live that man’s demeanor is sinful and his mind is at enmity with God in fact James tells us you adulteresses do you not know James for for that friendship with the world is hostility towards God therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God so right in Scripture it’s saying listen if you want to be friendly with the world if you want to take on the world’s view of things and how the world looks at things then you are actually putting yourself up against God because that’s the only thing you can do is because there is a sense of ruin that has come upon man it is man’s wicked defection from God that brought about such desolation and this just destruction of the soul it’s because man has moved away from God and continues to move away from God and therefore what happens is they’re just left to themselves they’re left to their own thinking they’re left to their own devices to their own passions and and and will and all those things that drives their life now if you notice in your bulletin there’s another passage I want you to look at if you don’t have your Bibles and says in Romans chapter 1 verse 26 now of course this is a familiar passage but it informs us in these passages about man’s mind that man’s mind is reprobate or another way of saying that is depraved it says in verse number 26 of Romans 1 for this reason God gave them over to degrading passions for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural and in the same way also men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in the desires toward one another men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error verse 28 and just as they did not see fit here is the key they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer in their thinking God gave them over to a depraved mind to do those things which are not proper so in other words the Lord is saying listen if you want to live that way if you want your worldview to be that if you want to just follow the passions and desires of your heart and do these wicked things then I’m giving you over to those things so mankind as a depraved mind that generates unlawful rebellious selfish irrational unjust and downright weird behavior that’s the result of sin so we are experiencing today some very bizarre twisted and unnatural behavior in our day are we not right and what was 10 a few years ago sin is today accept it and it is even accepted by our colleges and universities and our own government comes behind them making it very difficult for anyone to stand and keep the line keep the standard right and if you do say something then you are the marked person you are the evil person you are the person who and myself are going to be in trouble but you know what that’s the way it really is isn’t it and it’s always been like that that sin was right there in Sodom and Gomorrah so see right there with those ancient people of old still stuff same stuff going on today that the worldly mindset reaps the waves of God’s judgment over and over again sinful man wallows in the cesspool of immorality social confusion insane political turmoil and economic instability see the consequences of defection from God coupled with the penalties levied by God for unbelief and wickedness will become pounded and will compound human misery and suffering as we end head towards the end days suffering it will be a bounding amongst people groups as we move toward that second coming of Christ that next part of God’s program birth pangs are going to come about there’s going to be wars and rumors of wars right we have those but the Bible says those are just perfect hangs there the forerunners of what ultimate punishment will be and those who disbelieve will suffer in the lake of fire or in hell so see man is man in his utter depravity and bondage of will is selfish and lives only for what is lowest in his nature and for what is temple now if you look at our passage again to see what I am referring to you’ll find that the Lord identifies a very serious sinful condition that he’s telling to his disciples once he and he’s talking about the coming of the Lord because they’re asking him Lord when is it going to happen and this is what he tells them he so he’s identifying now let me just say the sinful conditions that the world doesn’t think is sinful and we often don’t look at as sinful so it doesn’t matter where you are the Lord brings this up and so these very sinful conditions and really an evil worldly mindset which manifests itself in two particular ways see a non biblical worldview will manifest itself really daily in two ways here’s the first way the first way this worldly evil mindset is noticeable in a person’s life is that that person begins to ignore the highest part of their human nature and only live at the lowest level now what do I mean by that look back to verse number 26 and let’s look at Noah’s days again because we’re just like these ancient people look at what the people thought most in verse number 26 it says and just as it happened in the days of Noah it was also being the son of the man here it is verse 27 they were eating they were drinking they were marrying they were being given in marriage now what’s wrong with that that’s the question what’s wrong with that those are all good things I don’t see any sinful stuff going on there oh look at let’s look at also verse number 28 lots days it says it was the same as happen in lots days they were eating they were drinking they were buying they were selling they were planting they were building now what’s wrong with those things Jesus is saying there’s something very wrong well if I answer that question honestly I would say there’s nothing wrong with them in and of themselves because God’s given us all things to enjoy and these are things that we all enjoy see when God created man he created him body soul and spirit God provided us food to enjoy he provided us companionship with family with friends and that special close relationship with that man or woman that we have in the bonds of holy matrimony is given to us to enjoy also God provided industry and work for us to enjoy so see the question is what’s wrong with doing these things then well when these become all that people live for and they ignored the spiritual and they leave out God’s highest and greatest gift to us that is to have a relationship with God to have communication with God that’s where it all goes wrong so it’s just like in the garden that’s why we’re under ruined because we have not only moved away from God our whole worldview is based on these things the lowest part of our humanity it is wrong when all people can see in the world immediately around them is fancy cars and find furniture and big homes and people taking extravagant vacations so see people want to pursue those things they want to be like those who do those things so in other words they want to pursue the pleasure of the world are their pleasures in the world yes their pleasures in the world but remember what it says in first John there’s the lust of the eyes and there the lust of the flesh and the pride of life see all those things are temporal and they’re passing away why would we put all our marbles in one basket we shouldn’t do it as believers see people forget life on Earth is short an eternity is long they don’t consider the next world that they will possibly matter of fact they will face come face to face with God it is upon people who fail to realize all this that sudden calamity will come upon them why if you look at Noah’s days in verse number 27 it says and the flood came and destroyed them all in the days of lot and when lot left Sodom well then God sent fire and brimstone and destroyed them all so ultimately see people live that way up until the last minute and destruction comes that’s going to happen with people so if you see really from our text that the people in each historical context the people had no interest in other than life in the immediate whatever they however they can gratify themselves now that’s what they lived for no thought to cultivate the spiritual part of their being all they live for was eating and drinking and marriage and family and business and pleasure in fact in the lot days it adds some things that says they were also building in other words they want to make their home here they want to keep building and advancing like the Tower of Babel and stay here I don’t want to go anywhere else I’m going to stay right here I don’t want to go anywhere else there is nowhere else a lot of people this is it is there’s no where else there’s no next world for many people in their world view this is it so man eat drink and be married because that’s all you God you don’t have anything else so man’s highest part remember is spiritual it’s to acknowledge God it’s to have a relationship with them so the Lord is saying to his disciples listen if you’re just living for the here and now if you’re just living for these things you have an evil worldly mindset and the second thing that comes out of a non biblical worldview and in his manifest in daily life is the second way this worldly evil mindset is noticeable in a person’s life is that it ignores the next world and lives only for this present temporal world in other words in both cases people are indifferent to God they’re just indifferent and you know what I would say today people are numb they’re just going along they’re hoping for the best they’re just numb they don’t know where to hang things when it comes to a worldview they’re just trying to do the best they can they think and that’s it there’s nothing else you know and they hope in the end that somehow God will look at them with favor this is where we all here today come into the equation and the present day historical context because if you look at verse number 26 it says this see in other words we live in the last days and what’s going to happen at the end of the last day’s progression upward movement no at the end of the last days is destruction that’s what the Bible says right Lucas says in verse 26 7 Luke 17 and just as it happened in the days of Noah so it will also be in the days of the Son of Man you see that so when Jesus comes again he is coming with judgment upon the world in fact in verse number 30 of Luke 17 it says it will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed is this not an exact picture of what people in our present day live for they live for eating and drinking and marriage and the family and business and pleasure buying and selling business and money-making do they do those things to bring glory to god no they do it just still have more comfort and more pleasure see the goal is to have as much fun as possible everything today is about fun if I didn’t have fun it didn’t mean anything right I didn’t have any fun everything’s boring well people are really most concerned about their homes their cars their sports their games and hobbies their education their jobs their bodies or anything else you can add to that list it’s all about them it’s all about what they want see they pay in other words little attention to the spiritual part of them to the higher activities of humanity they do not prepare for eternity they do not think why should I worry about the future if I am having things go pretty well for me now they say I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it they think either there is no God and no afterlife or they think themselves good enough in their own eyes that God will look on them with favor when the end comes at least they hope they will they don’t consider that it will be too late then was it too late for the people of Noah’s day it was too late Noah preached a hundred and twenty years while he was building the ark repentance and faith he was a preacher of righteousness the Bible says and he warned the people about the wrath to come he preached repentance and God’s means of deliverance for 120 years now if you look at verse number 27 I want you to notice something else in Luke 17 it says they did all these things right in the middle of verse 27 until the day that Noah entered the Ark they did all these things verse number 29 but on the day that lot went out from Sodom what happened judgment fell right but remember there was two groups there was the group that were saved and there was a group that fell in the gods full wrath and destruction see the question must be this morning is which group are you in either those who will be rescued from God’s judgment the saved or those who will suffer the full wrath of God’s judgment the unsaved separated from God from for all eternity in the lake of fire and if there is a hell of course I believe there is because the Bible teaches that if there is a hell when would you want someone to tell you how to avoid going there that’s a good question because remember when it says in Matthew 1028 and do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul rather fear Him that can destroy both soul and body in hell who’s that that’s God see God has full authority over all things so now I really drew for your really dismal picture right but you know what dismal is reality ruin is reality but thank the lord that’s not the end remembers to other ours matta fact these two other arts become important to understand according to God’s Word the judgment of God some day will soon come and no one will escape however God provided one way to escape there was one way in lots time there was one way in knowest I’m there is one way of course in our day or the main emphasis of of being delivered is of course the Lord God our Lord God not only exposes sin and identify sin but he does something about sin see it’s about what God is doing he atones for it by variance punishment so this next word quickly is the word redemption alright God’s done something that’s the word Redemption he provides rescue so dear people do not ignore God’s gracious warnings and his offer of deliverance I think you to give up your own plants to save yourself if you’re trying to do that because you can’t the only way to escape God’s wrath is by God’s own plan of redemption like I said it was the Word of God that tells us that Noah a preacher of righteousness preached for 120 years so if you notice in our text in Luke chapter 17 verse 24 and 25 God tells us there’s a way of escape it says in verse number 24 for just like the lightning when in flashes out of one part of the sky shines to the other part of the sky so will the Son of Man be in his day but verse 25 says but first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation in other words something had to come first that God would supply to humanity to all humanity that would secure their deliverance and that was his redemption this is God’s plan of salvation that geez would Jesus would suffer in our place he would take the wrath of God in our place so Jesus is the one who was crucified and died in the place of sinners it is by his very death that those who believe in Jesus can be pardoned and forgiven of their sins so according to God’s plan of salvation all people are currently under the wrath of God you know what and they can’t escape themselves we have all sinned against God we all merit punishment we have forgotten God we have ignored God and live for the sole purpose to pledge to a pleasing ourselves and find as much pleasure as possible in this world without thinking about God so we’re all guilty there no one’s no one can escape that because we live in this sinful world the all people are all also absolutely help us to do anything about their future punishment it says in Ephesians 2 1 and they were dead in their trespasses and why can’t we do anything because we’re dead spiritually and then in Romans 8 7 for the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God for it does not submit to God’s laud indeed it cannot those who are in the flesh cannot please God so as long as we are restricted to the mindset of the pleasures of this world and our lust in our desires we can never please God there so the incredible thing about God’s plan is only God through Jesus Christ can save sinners from his wrath and condemnation like acts 4 12 as there’s salvation and no one else where there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved in John 10 I am the door if anyone enters by me he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture and then in Romans 6 23 the wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ so Jesus is God’s remedy Jesus has provided the way of escape the way of salvation and Jesus offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all those who are under ruin to all those who cannot save themselves and that is everybody so ruin is man’s condition redemption is God what God has done and what he offers man but there is another word another are and that is regeneration regeneration is really you can know all those things and still not be in God’s family the regeneration is where your get born again you get born again into gods family in fact you can know those things and never really move toward them that would be very tragic than to not know that you’re right with God so regeneration simply means to be born again when a person is born again he sees and enters the kingdom of God and he does so always by repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ like we say see in John 3 3 and jesus answered and said to him truly truly I say to you unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God he cannot be born into gods family unless he turns from his sin and believes in God the father’s only solution for that sin and that’s Jesus Christ and remember faith always includes three things knowledge of what’s going on knowledge of God’s plan of salvation a second thing is you can know things never move any further the second thing is ascent i assent to the plan of God salvation that Jesus Christ died in my place that he took the full wrath of God firm for me that I cannot save myself and that by faith and repentance if I believe in Jesus Christ Jesus would give me everything that he said would be offered to me and I can be saved I can be born again to gods family but a person could ascend to the facts and still not be saved and born again because there must be trust in Christ there must be that step where you trust in Christ it’s like the john three sixteen passage of scripture for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life for God did not send his Son into the world to judge the world but that the world might be saved through him he who believes is not judged doesn’t come up with God’s judgment but he who does not believe is judged already because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God this is the judgment that light has come into the world and Men loved darkness rather than light why because their deeds were evil so if you want to be in the group that is saved then there must be a response you can’t just have knowledge of it matter of fact there’s there’s movements towards faith and the first movement is repentance and it’s that movement includes you hear from the truth in your heart and you start getting it you start seeing you the Spirit of God begins to shed light upon it and then you begin to say you know what the way that I was thinking the way that I was going to what I was believing what I was trusting is totally wrong and you begin to rethink deeply in your heart about what you heard about Jesus Christ that’s what included in repentance but then that move also includes a second move and that’s the move about Jesus Christ repentance really does mean a change of mine about what Jesus has done he offers great blessing in the kingdom of God and that Kingdom that obtained that you must begin to transfer your trust to anything you’re believing and Trust completely and totally him so there’s repentance and part of repentance is believing and then there is the third move that’s an intentional step to reach out and take what is promised to you and given by God it’s an intention now I get it now I see if I don’t trust completely in Jesus Christ I’m going to be like those people in lots day and nose day because judgments coming and there’s only two groups to save than the unsaved I know the only group was going to be in the rescued is going to be those who get rescued by God’s means of rescue Jesus Christ and you get that you know light bulb goes on I see that now I get it and I want to do something about it because when you get to that point that’s why we believe that you know once the Spirit of God convicts you up in that point you can’t resist it anymore there’s like an irresistible gray saying what do I do now that’s why people cried out what must I do to be saved that’s the question why where’s that come from it comes from a deep conviction in the heart that I know God supplied salvation to me and it’s only in Jesus Christ so see you it moves you to confess him as your Lord and Savior and believe him in your heart all the things he’s promised you and you know you trust them that is true but once that happens there’s also another move of faith and this must be included and it’s this to follow him not just to profess him but to follow him it means an intentional daily practice of following and doing what Jesus did end having a worldview that the Lord did give marriage he did give food he did give work and all those things I’m to enjoy but that’s not it my relationship with God is more important to those things right and I’m going to seek that first see and then what happens your whole worldview and the way you look at things changes its it switches right around and now you’re in a place that in a very real way I can enjoy all the things God’s given me and I can enjoy the truth that God told me what it would take place and happen and enjoy both things even if I’m suffering even if everything I used to have is taken away even if my circumstances change it doesn’t change my relationship with God no one could take that away not even death can take that away because many people who are servants of God in Scripture died for their faith but that was just a doorway into the presence of God because God is taking care of everything else see that’s the way to live that’s the way to go out there and be thankful that’s the way as I the first scripture i read to be on guard that’s the way to keep on the alert at all times why because will we be in the presence of God someday the answer clearly is yes and so God’s taking us from ruin offered us Redemption provided for us the spirit of god so we can be born again regeneration and then what glorification right into the presence of God living with the Lord for all eternity that’s where God that’s what God is doing and those are the most important things so see you have to say to yourself where are you at in that process are you just thinking about them or have they become crystal clear in your life and if they have have you done anything have you trusted Christ is there a change in your life do you desire to follow him no matter what’s going on no matter what your friends say no matter your what your professors say no matter what other people have influence what is going on in your mind as far as you’re living the highest part of your being you created in the image of God is a spiritual part my relationship with God is the most important thing in this on this side of eternity is it not that’s how I live that’s supposed to live and if we live like that then we will have a biblical worldview but we will also do something else we will be concerned somebody asked me the other day what do you think about you know Syrians coming into our country everybody’s asking that question right I said of course it’s a matter of wisdom we have to protect our people in our country we have we can’t let anybody in here we need to vet people before they get here that we make sure they are but from a biblical theological perspective if god brings him here the church ought to evangelize them right that they are people who need the gospel maybe all this stuff is going on in the Middle East and people are being thrown out of their homes and burned out of their homes to come here so the gospel can go to them because we can’t reach them over there in a war zone see we have to think that’s God’s world for you you know I don’t like things that are going on in the world as much as you don’t either but you have to always look from God’s perspective okay if they come here I’m going to be cautious but I want to get them the gospel because they need Christ they need to go from Redemption from ruin to redemption to regeneration they need the kingdom of God that’s what they need they need Christ so see that’s what we ought to do and if the church doesn’t do it who’s going to do it if you don’t do who’s going to do it I don’t know no one’s going to do it no one’s going to do it so the gore Lord’s doing a lot of things in the world I don’t understand them all some of them I have a lot of questions about so do you I think the insecure insecurity is in our world has changed where there’s a lot of insecurity in the world but I don’t know if that’s a bad thing I think it’s a good thing because when things are too nice to secure we don’t even think about God no we do we eat drink Mary be given in marriage work plan build that’s it we don’t think about God but when there’s turmoil and their insecurities we think about what is God doing what if the day came today where do I stand before God will I go into God’s presence see those questions could be answered now and believe me you want those questions answered everybody does I prayed that you do if you don’t if you have questions you don’t know you add please come and talk with me I want to share with you the gospel but if you do know please let’s not sit back on our laurels let’s be aware attentive let us be like the Bible says on guard soldiers are on guard right let us keep alert let’s not fall asleep and get lou Lord to sleep in this world that’s always be vigilant spiritually vigilant about what’s going on so we our lives could be used by the Spirit of God at any time to do whatever the Lord wants us to do and that will well can you continue to do preach the gospel and move it to her where it ought to be so I prayed this morning that you will be in the right group the save group and not the unsaved group and that you’ll realize that your worldview would have been adjusted to understand that from ruin and judgment God offers retent Redemption and regeneration to all who will come in faith and repentance to believe and then follow him with all your heart and be a servant in this world so we can use you any way possible within his church and all God’s people said what let’s pray lord again as I come before you today Lord I guess there’s some Lord there’s some sin that we have to that I myself have to confess and that lord is the sin of really sometimes not looking at the world correctly the sin of Lord going through the motions and going through the daily things and and hoping for things and doing things that everybody else is doing but Lord somehow ignoring you and forgetting you I pray Lord that that would not take place anymore but that would be something that we’re very vigilant about our time of reading the word our time of thinking through the Word of God and as we read it and as we hear it preached our time of adjusting things in our lives or our view of the world is more biblical unless what it used to be knowing Lord that this world is going on a downward slope but your plan is to bring the gospel Jesus Christ to those and thank you Lord for those who received you thank you Lord for those who have been rescued by the Spirit of God and the Word of God and the gospel and I pray Lord that we would always be faithful to be aware of those around us who don’t know you and be able to share the gospel with them and i pray lord please save them save our neighbors and our families save people that are going to move in next to us that are a little different than us and for maybe from another country Lord let us somehow befriend them and for the purpose of showing them God’s plan of salvation so they too can enter the kingdom of god i pray that for us Lord so Lord bless Stephens it this week Lord as we consider our Thanksgiving holidays I pray Lord that you would help us to be more sober about them that Lord we can take them more seriously that Lord it is a time to thank you it is a time to pray to you it is a time to ask you to advance the kingdom of God it is a Time Lord to just even repent of our sins and to adjust our life so it could be more in line with what pleases you and I just pray Lord that every day we have an outer sense of our indented pneus to you about the great things you’ve done for us in in salvation and so lord go before us this week make us more aware of our days than we ever were before and I pray Lord that our main desire would would bring to give you glory and honor for what you have and will accomplish and I pray this in Christ’s name Amen
