Take Comfort, God Will Destroy Evil Oppressors (Part 2)

Will God’s promises hold even when such seems impossible? David Capoccia finishes his look into the book of Nahum and explains how God encouraged the people of Judah to look past the great power of the kingdom of Assyria and rest assured in God’s coming vengeance. David Capoccia discusses the second and third of the three main points of Nahum along with a few necessary closing thoughts:

    1. Remember God’s Characteristic Justice and Wrath
    2. Prepare for the Stunning Reversals of God’s Judgment
    3. See Through Man’s Useless Strength and Defenses

well good morning my joy to be with you again and bring you the word we’re back in ahem this week let’s pray Lord God this is a great word that we have before us because you are a great God and you sent your Prophet to declare this word not only to the people of that time but to us today so God exalt yourself now show yourself to be so great as the just God the faithful God the god that we can place our trust in that we can be secure in help me to be able to explain this word help the people to understand it and to apply it in Jesus name amen amen one of the great sources of discouragement and despair that we face in life is The Impossible perhaps you thought something like this no matter how much so and so hears the Bible’s truth he’s never going to believe or change he’s just too hard-hearted it’s impossible or I’m never going to be able to give up this sin habit I’m too weak and it’s too strong my own life choices have made it so that I cannot change now it’s impossible or there’s no way our family is going to survive all these unexpected expenses we just didn’t prepare enough and now we are doomed rest is impossible we may find ourselves sometimes saying such things when it comes to the evil and and Injustice of our world the rich always get away with their evil you can’t touch them they have too much money they have too much influence there’s no justice on the evil rich or false and flattering teachers claiming to be from God they just keep gaining more and more followers no one seems interested in sound Doctrine or careful exposition of the B never be able to win the people for Christ or nothing can stop that evil government they have too much power too much control they oppress their people too well they’ve spies everywhere they’ve silenced all criticism and opposition they have too many soldiers cannot be stopped cannot be resisted anymore have you ever such have you ever thought such despairing thoughts either about your own life about the situation in the world how quickly we forget the unbreakable nature of God’s promises promises that are tied to God’s nature itself God’s nature itself and that directly contradict our depressing thoughts consider Deuteronomy 7: 9-1 God declares know therefore that the Lord your God he is God the faithful God who keeps his Covenant and his loving kindness to a thousandth generation with those who love him and keep his Commandments but repays those who hate him to their faces to destroy them he will not delay with him who hates him but he will repay him to his face or Matthew 6: 31-32 do not worry then saying what will we eat or what will we drink or what will we wear for clothing the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things for your heavenly father knows that you need all these things but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you or Matthew 19: 24- 26 Jesus said again I say to you it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of an needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God I.E it’s impossible when the disciples heard this they were very astonished and said then who can be saved and looking at them Jesus said to them with people this is impossible but With God all things are possible we hear we have such promises in the scripture yet even with these promises we are slow to believe we tell God God do you know what you’re up against how can you Prevail against such a mighty obstacle either in my life or in the world people of nahum’s day were wondering the same thing about the evil Kingdom of Assyria last time we discussed how this aggressive greedy brutal and deceitful Empire had conquered all the kingdoms of the Middle East they had annihilated Israel’s northern kingdom Samaria and they had subjugated Israel’s Southern Kingdom Judah these were God’s people by the time of nem’s Prophecy around 650 BC the Syrian Empire was more powerful than ever and God’s promise to judge evil and vindicate the faith of his people seemed infinitely remote nevertheless through nem’s prophecy God tells his people take comfort I will destroy evil oppressors this is the main message of the book of nahem God says take comfort I will destroy evil oppressors in the first part of nahem we saw how God directed the people to his character we articulated this point one of three points in the face of ongoing evil remember God’s characteristic Justice and wrath it has always been God’s characteristic it’s always been part of his heart to hate evil to love Justice and to judge wickedness with overwhelming holy wrath Nim describes the mere anger of God as upheaving the world causing the Seas to dry up vibrant lands to wither and mountains to crumble God specifically promises Nineveh that was the capital of the Assyrian Empire and then also Assyria as a whole and its king that he will destroy them well at the same time he promises his people that he will remove the Assyrian oppression and he will restore he will one day restore their Splendor the Splendor of Israel God even commands that these these two peoples respond appropriately Judah God’s people are to believe and celebrate while Nineveh is to get ready for battle and for their downfall but the question surely arose how is this possible oh God Assyria is Invincible their empire is vast their armies are Mighty their King has strict control how could you possibly overthrow this Kingdom so the book of nem continues with God’s preemptive answer to such an objection these next two sections of nim and the next two main points were critical for Judah to understand if they were going to take comfort and they’re also critical for us to understand if we are to take comfort in God’s justice and God’s faithfulness so how should we respond in the face of ongoing evil number one as we saw last week remember remember God’s characteristic Justice and wrath but also number two prepare for the stunning reversals of God’s judgment and also number three see through man’s useless strength and defenses let’s now read the second section of nahem and look more closely at this second point if you haven’t done so yet open your Bibles to nahem chapter 2 the book of nahem is towards the end of the Old Testament right after Jonah and Micah it’s page 931 if you’re using the Bibles in the Pew turn to nahem chapter 2 where we see the second section of the book of nem NM 2:3 NM 3:7 let’s read this section and then we’ll talk about what is the second point of nem’s message so name chap 2:3 down to verse 7 of chapter 3 follow along with me the shields of his mighty men are colored red the Warriors are dressed in Scarlet the Chariots are enveloped in flashing steel when he is prepared to March and the Cypress Spears are brandished the Chariots race madly in the streets they Rush wildly in the squares their appearan is like torches they Dash to and fro like lightning flashes he remembers his Nobles they stumble in their March they hurry to her wall and the mantelet is set up the gates of the rivers are opened and the palace is dissolved it is fixed she is stripped she is carried away and her handmaids are moaning like the sound of doves beating on their breasts so Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days now they are fleeing stop stop but no one turns back plunder the silver plunder the gold for there is no limit to the treasure wealth from every kind of desirable object she is emptied yes she is desolate and waste hearts are melting and knees knocking also anguishes in the whole body and all their faces are grown pale where is the den of the Lions and the feeding place of the Young Lions where the lion and lioness and Lion’s Cub prowled with nothing to disturb them the lion tore enough for his Cubs killed enough for his lionesses and filled his layers with prey and his dens with torn flesh behold I am against you declares the Lord of hosts I will burn up her chariots and smoke a sword will devour your Young Lions I will cut off your prey from the land and no longer will be heard no longer will the voice of your Messengers be heard woe to the bloody City complete completely full of lies and pillage her prey never departs the noise of the whip the noise of the rattling of the wheel galloping horses and bounding chariots Horsemen charging swords flashing Spears gleaming many slain a mass of corpses and countless dead bodies they stumble over the dead bodies all because of the many harlotries of the Harlot the Charming one the Mistress of sorceries Luc sel’s Nation by her harlotries and families by her sorceries behold I am against you declares the Lord of hosts and I will lift up your skirts over your face and show to the Nations your nakedness and to the kingdoms your disgrace I will throw filth on you and make you vile and set you up as a spectacle and it will come about that all who see you will shrink from you and say Nineveh is devastated who will grieve for her where will I seek comforters for you we see here in the second section of nahem a second exhortation of comfort from God in the face of evil and it’s this prepare for the stunning reversals of God’s judgment our second point is prepare for the stunning reversals of God’s judgment notice this section features a series of images and these pictures all have the same theme Divine reversal God will take the once great seemingly Untouchable people of Nineveh and suddenly turn the tables on it let’s look at each of these Vivid images there are six of them in our text first in verses 23 to 25 we see the great besieger now becoming the besieged verse three gives us a picture of this resplendent Army preparing for battle mighty men dressed in red with gleaming bronze Shields and flashing steel only there’s a problem this is not a picture of nineveh’s Mighty Army but of the army marching against Nineveh Nineveh isn’t depicted in glorious Marshal array at all verses four and five show the state inside Nineveh is one of panic chariots are careening wildly through the streets as the commanders race to make all the preparation for battle Mighty Men called The Nobles here they’re not standing tall and proud they’re stumbling as they hurry to the walls battle has come and the people of Nineveh struggle to get ready Syria was famous for their Siege engin Assyrian armies were expert in bringing down walled fortresses but now the siege works are brought against Neva the text says the enemy sets up a mantlet that is a large defensive Shield or covering behind which infantry can hide this is our first image second in verses 26 to 28 we see the impregnable water Fortress actually compromised by water Nineveh trusted in her moat her Aqueduct and her canals to keep her safe during a Siege but now the gates of the rivers burst open and the water itself begins to destroy the city the palace is broken down and washed away the female slaves and servants those who would not be at the walls defending the city They Mourn over the sudden destruction Nineveh the once secure city of pools remember that that Nineveh was associated with water just like Venice is today this once secure city of pools now has her water fleeing away and destroying the people cry halt against the water to no avail the unleash torrent cannot be stopped what exactly is being described here we cannot say for sure perhaps since the city was built between two rivers one of the rivers unexpectedly flooded damaging the structures of many great buildings in the city and probably lengthy sections of the critical City walls or or yeah perhaps this flood occurred as a failure in nineveh’s engineering the bursting of a City Reservoir the failure of a critical piece of the aqueduct or Canal perhaps that was the cause of the flood or perhaps the besur cleverly stopped up certain channels of water around or near the city to overload other channels of water so that the waters burst through and overwhelmed sections of the city of Nineveh this is so such an event is supremely ironic because the Assyrians had done prec precisely the same thing when they had besieged the when they had besieged the city of Babylon decades earlier they had re rerouted channels of water to compromise the city’s defenses intriguingly deodor culus a Greek historian from the 1st Century BC reports that Nineveh was indeed com compromised by flooding waters before it fell he says a section of the city wall crumbled away due to a flood giving this once impregnable City a ready Avenue of invasion however this flooding happened the protective Waters God declares the protective Waters of Nineveh will turn against the city Nineveh will be invaded From the Inside Out not by men but by water that’s our second image third in verses 2 chapter 2: 9 to 10 we see the city once filled f with plundered Treasures now plundered the breach caused by the flood makes the way to the city’s wealth Wide Open Notice the character characterization of this City’s wealth there’s no limit to it wealth of every kind of desirable object because of ass Syria’s incessant conquests and the tribute it stored up from the various subdued Nations the city of Nineveh was one of the greatest and most beautiful of the Ancient World perhaps the most beautiful at this time it was filled with plundered treasures and the kings of Assyria took great effort to Adorn the city and its many temples but all this treasure is suddenly seized the great city of treasure is now made empty of treasure and it becomes a desolate ruin the the inhabitants cannot even comprehend this reversal Hearts melt knees knock faces turn pale and bodies are racked with anguish it’s our third image of reversal and fourth verses 11 to 13 of chapter 2 we see the one time Predators turned into prey verses 11- 13 describe the city of Nineveh like a Den of Lions a safe place for the Lions to return after they’ve hunted other creatures the king his Nobles and his soldiers they’re characterized as a a lion and Young Lions while while their wives and children are characterized as lionesses and lion cubs Nineveh used to be a place to cure for these Lions a den filled with prey plunder from all the nations attacked betrayed and subdued by Nineveh but in verse 11 nem asks what happened to this Lion’s Den the den has been invaded the prey have been removed the lionesses and the lion cubs are no longer safe moreover God himself declares directly I am against you oh Nineveh Den of Lions God promises to destroy the city and her shoulder soldiers to remove the prey from these lions and to even cut off the voice of The Messengers it’s going to be a Communications breakdown Lions who once hunted will be hunted and their once secure Den will be plundered fifth in naam 3: 1-3 we see the corpse making City full of corpses God pronounces woe on Nineveh woe is a word of judgment a word of warning even a word of lamentation your Devastation is going to be great God warns woe to you why God says because you are a bloody City full of lies and pillage you shed the blood blood of countless innocence you are brutal you are brutal to enemy soldiers and prisoners you have stolen that which does not belong to you as your plunder and you are full of lies you betray the trust of those who sought to make peace with you you turn against those who sought your protection and friendship and you turn them into prey Isaiah 33:1 by the way says the same thing about ass Syria’s bloodthirstiness and treachery here’s Isaiah 33:1 one woe to you oh Destroyer while you were not destroyed and he who was treacherous While others did not deal treacherously with him as soon as you finish destroying you will be destroyed as soon as you cease to deal treacherously others will deal treacherously with you Assyria indeed spilled much blood throughout the Middle East and piled up corpses literally piled up Corp corpses they did that as a psychological um technique a strategem to prevent other people from fighting against them but now the tables are turned in verses 2 to 3 we see the chaos of battle unfold chariots rattling Horsemen charging swords clashing Spears gleaming and what’s the result widespread death bodies everywhere and notice the great emphasis on this death there’s a fourfold description of the result of this Carnage and it keeps getting greater and greater first many slain actually a mass of corpses actually so many dead bodies you can’t even count them all actually so many dead bodies you can’t even walk straight you stumble over the dead bodies because they are everywhere thus the corpse pilot city is now filled with the corpses of her own people and her own soldiers six and finally in nam 3: 4 to7 we see the once proud and successful Harlot utterly exposed and abandoned this is our culminating culminating image of reversal why are all these great judgments coming down upon Nineveh ultimately it is because the harlotries of the Harlot Nineveh representing all of Assyria had seduced Nations by her power her wealth and her religion the peoples wanted to become her allies and her trading partners they wanted to adopt her customs and her Gods we see even Israel doing this like a harlot then Nineveh corrupted the Nations but more than this Nineveh betrayed her lovers she attacked them she plundered their wealth and took their people as captives and slaves in doing so Nineveh enriched and beautified herself seeking to increase her charms even more but what does God declare will happen to this har lotous Queen God says again I am against you and he promises a supreme Act of disgrace God says he will publicly lift the skirts of the Harlot over her face she will be completely shamed and exposed she will lose all pretense of majesty and charm she will be exposed as a powerless and unclean prostitute Every Nation will see her nakedness her true corruption and shame and she will be made completely vulnerable blinded and naked furthermore God says he will cast filth he will cast Abominations on her that which is disgusting and repulsive you will cast th those things on her and she will become a spectacle not a spectacle of royalty beauty or Charm as she was accustomed to be but a spectacle of Shame and degradation Nineveh will have no friends in that day every nation for will see her for who she really is she will not be able to lie to the Nations anymore and no one will support her no one will comfort her the great seductress will become an exposed Harlot and abandoned by all now why all these images why these images of complete reversal God strongly underscores to Judah what will happen to evil and oppressive Nineveh this great City along with its great Empire will be completely overturned all her power all her security all her wealth and Grandeur will evaporate will be replaced with complete shame and destruction no one could have expected that such reversals would come yet God tells his people get ready for it I will bring about the unthinkable for Nineveh I will do even the impossible would this not be a great comfort to Israel who sees Nineveh just going on and on and evil gaining Glory gaining riches because of her Wicked acts seemingly Unstoppable God says I am the god of divine universals I will bring this wicked and seemingly Invincible Empire down to the depths she will be abandoned by all I will do the impossible this is the second point that we have in nahem prepare for the stunning reversals of God’s judgment but how sure are these images of reversal because perhaps Wicked Nineveh might be able to foro This calamity with the right preparations what if Nineveh acquires more soldiers or a stronger economic base maybe Nineveh will get away with her wickedness after all so we turn to the third and final section of the book of nahem that’s name chap 3: 8-9 let’s read this third section and then we’ll see the third point so name 3 starting at verse 8 are you better than no Aman which was situated By the Waters of the Nile with Waters surrounding her whose Rampart was the sea whose wall consisted of the sea Ethiopia was her might and Egypt too Without Limits put and luim were among her helpers yet she became an exile she went into captivity also her small children were dashed to pieces at the head of every street they cast lots for her Honorable Men and all her great men were bound with feathers you too will become drunk you too will be hidden you too will search for a refuge from the enemy or you two will search for Refuge from the enemy all your fortifications are fig trees with ripe fruit when shaken they fall into the eater’s mouth behold your people are women in your midst the gates of your land are open wide to your enemies fire consumes your gate bars draw for yourself water for The Siege strengthen your fortification go into the clay and tread the mortar take hold of the brick mold their fire will consume you the sword will cut you down it will consume you as the Locust does multiply yourself like the creeping Locust multiply yourself like the swarming Locust you have increased your traitors more than the stars of Heaven the creeping Lo or more than the stars of Heaven and the creeping Locust strips and flies away your Guardsmen are like the Swarm Waring Locust your Marshals are like hordes of grasshoppers settling in the stone walls on a cold day the sun rises and they flee and a place where they are is not known your shepherds are sleeping oh king of Assyria your Nobles are lying down your peoples are scattered on the mountains and there is no one to reather them there is no relief for your breakdown your wound is incurable all who hear about you will clap their hands over you for on whom has not your evil passed continually in this third section of Mayhem we see the third and final comforting exhortation from God in the face of evil see through man’s useless strength and defenses see through man’s useless strength and defenses notice vers 8 to 11 in these verses nahem asks Nineveh a question are you better than noan what’s noan well noan is another name for the city of Thieves thieves was a city or another let me say this there’s another name for the city of Thieves a great and illustrious city of Southern Egypt a city that had recently led a promising Rebellion against Assyria in 664 BC this will be fresh in the minds of the people of the time notice the description of Thieves starting in verse 8 thieves also called noan thieves was a city just like Nineveh thieves was built on both sides of the Nile in Egypt like Nineveh thieves was a water City that ex seemed that seemed extremely well protected and well prepared for any kind of Siege Beyond water and wall defenses th had many great armies to protect her armies from Ethiopia armies from Egypt and armies from the peoples of Libya puts and lubben this was thev situation when she rebelled but what happened to thieves Assyria came besieged thieves and a supposedly Invincible water city fell verse 10 describes the result the survivors were taken captive their children were killed all over the city and the the city’s greatest men were assigned as prized slaves marched away in Chains what’s the point of bringing up thieves verse 11 makes the connection just as you Nineveh are like thieves in your greatness in your wealth and your defenses so you will be like thieves and your calamitous fall of all who want to know that even impregnable cities can fall Nineveh you are to know God announces to Nineveh as you did to Invincible thieves so it will be done to you you will be taken captive your children will be torn apart your Nobles will be sold off as prized slaves you will stagger as drunken thieves staggered you will try to hide yourself just as the survivors tried to hide and flee from Fallen thieves thieves great defenses did the city no good neither will nineveh’s famous defenses name further illustrates this point of defenselessness in verses 12 to 17 name says Nineveh is like a tree full of ripe figs sure looks impressive from the distance full but get closer give it a little Shake all the figs just pop right off right into the mouths of awaiting eaters verse 13 says Nineveh is like a city defended exclusively by women now no offense to ladies but women at this time were not known for strength for courage and they certainly were not trained for battle so when God says they are defended by women he’s essentially saying Nineveh is defended by weak untrained cowards verse 13 further says that the city is like one with its Gates wide open the city may look strong to men it may actually have its Gates closed but from God’s perspective it’s like the gates are completely open it’s like the gates it’s like the the bars of the gate have already been burned with fire any Invader can easily come in in verse 14 we see the taunting commands of God given to Nineveh get yourself ready for the siege secure Provisions strengthen the defenses the first half of 15 like we saw earlier in nem makes clear that these defensive preparations will not change their Destiny sword and fire will will destroy them the city will be consumed just as locusts strip crops bare and leave nothing behind this Locust comparison leads to another metaphor regarding locusts because some in the city might have sought Security in greater numbers let’s increase the number of our soldiers let’s increase the number of our Traders let’s get a strong supply network going so we can withstand even the greatest Siege God even sarcastically commands the people to multiply themselves in preparation multiply yourselves like locusts multiply themselves do you know what the problem with Locust is one day locusts arrive in such numbers that they black out the sun and the next day they’re all gone locusts disappear so quickly versus verse 16 begins to allude to this fact but verse 17 makes this point even more directly God says your soldiers are like a horde of locusts and a horde of grasshoppers sitting on cold stone walls as soon as the sun rises as soon it get as it gets hot what will your Locust do they will fly away and you will not be able to find them anymore God says this is what your multiplied soldiers and Traders will do they will flee like locusts the more people you gather to strengthen your defenses oh Nineveh the more people will flee in an instant in an instant your Mighty looking defenses will disappear but what about our King some of them must have thought surely we can find strength in our King he will rally the people and He will lead us to Victory but verses 18 to 19 show that looking to the king for strength is futile verse 18 addresses the king of Assyria directly naam tells the king your leaders are sleeping possibly meaning they are dead your leaders are sleeping and your people are scattered fleeing to the mountains for safety why have they scattered why can they not be regathered why is there no leader to bring them together to stand and fight where is their mighty king implication the king is gone in nahem 1 the Lord said he was preparing a grave for the king and now we see that the king is removed the people will be without their great king when they stand against their enemies this decision from God is fixed verse 19 referring against the king says there is no relief for your breakdown your breach your fracturing your wound is incurable nothing can preserve nothing can save your life any preparations you make are useless and you know what you Wicked King God says when you’re gone the peoples of the world will not weep they will not sigh they will not shake their heads but what will they do when they hear that you have died the end of verse 19 declares they will clap their hands over you they will celebrate God’s justice on you they will be glad that you are gone all your glory all your pump all your accomplishments wiped away in an instant the last memory of you is one of gladness that you are no more why God tells the reason for on whom has your evil not passed continually who in the world was not your victim O King whom did you not oppress whom did you not harm with your evil and not just once but continually none of the Nations will mourn the passing of the king of Assyria the king will not be able to save Nineveh and no one will be able to save him so behold the Unstoppable Justice and wrath of God Nineveh sure look strong in 650 DC even Invincible but God exhorts his people see through their useless strength and defenses they have no true security what they have is all show it’s a mirage none of their preparations will matter their strength will evaporate in an instant they will be completely exposed in their deserved judgment I will accomplish this I have promised this I will do the impossible so we see the third Point see through man’s useless strength and defenses let’s now review what we’ve seen in this book God’s people had suffered greatly at the hands of the wicked king of Assyria the city of Nineveh and the Assyrian Empire in general the people wondered God why do you let the wicked Prosper where is your Justice why have you stopped being good but God through nahem tells the people emphatically take Comfort my people for I will destroy your evil oppressors God gave his people and it gives us three exhortations of comfort in the face of evil remember God’s characteristic Justice and wrath prepare prepare for the stunning reversals of God’s judgment and see through man’s useless strength and defenses do not despair in the face of try triumphing evil God says my plan is already set I am good and evil will receive its rightful recompense I will do even the impossible I will suddenly cast down the mighty I will utterly shame and expose the proud and any preparations they make will be useless when you see all of this oh my people you will understand just as Isaiah says behold your god reigns did nahum’s prophecy against Nineveh come to pass most certainly did while Assyria was at the height of its power around 650 BC by 625 BC only 25 years later the strength of the Empire had deteriorated as the empire was beset by Civil War the Nations that had formerly been subjugated by Assyria rose up in Rebellion with Babylon taking the lead this Rebel Coalition defeated Assyria in a number of battles until in 615 BC Nineveh itself came under siege the city’s defenses did not save it nor did ass Syria’s armies Nineveh the greatest city in the world up to this time fell to Invaders many of the survivors were massacred the rest were taken away as slaves and the great city was burned to the ground and left a ruin and it has remained a ruin to this day Assyria itself did not long Outlast her great city after another 10 years of war at the Battle of charch Miss in 605 BC Assyria Was Defeated for the last time and the Assyrian Empire ceased to exist Babylon became hegemon in the Middle East and no one was sad to see Assyria go God’s stunning prophecy of judgment came to pass exactly as nahem had declared so what does all this mean for us as Christians in the 21st century does Nim’s prophecy really matter now that the Assyrian Empire no longer exists of course it does not only are the principles of this book Timeless for responding to tests of God’s faithfulness and justice but the fact that this prophecy was completely fulfilled by God should encourage us all the more to believe in him my brothers and sisters let us stop despairing and becoming discouraged in the face of the supposedly impossible if God has made a promise to us in his word we can be sure of that promise’s fulfillment even if everything our eyes tell us say that there is no way that God can keep his promise now understand that I’m not saying that God will do whatever we want that’s impossible this message is not a call to name and claim even the impossible of God because God will do it no we can only expect from God that which he actually promised God could do the impossible for things he hasn’t promised but we’re only talking about what God has promised for us as Christians he didn’t promise US riches but he did promise perfect provision he didn’t promise US good health but he did promised to bring us safely into his Heavenly Kingdom and he didn’t promise US freed us from temptation but he did promise to strengthen us so that we can stand in the day of testing so if God’s promises seem contradicted by impossible situations do not be shaken in your confidence is the arm of the Lord Too Short is our God so impotent nothing will be impossible with God he is the god of divine Divine reversals he exalts the humble and suddenly cast down the proud wait on your faithful God to do the impossible however long it takes he will not fail he will act in the right time and when you consider the injustices and evils in the world today the peoples the practices the governments that seems so impossible to stop or to bring to Justice remember that your God still does the impossible to keep his promises evil no matter how mighty No matter how seemingly secure and well prepared will not escape the eye and the wrath of God God will judge all evil oppressors just as he did Assyria God did not judge Assyria immediately God gave Assyria time God was patient but God’s patience does not last forever in God’s perfect and wise timing he called those Wicked ones to account and he will do the same with those who practice evil today either in their own lifetimes or at the final judgment so let us never despair in the face of ongoing evil let us remember the words of n God will judge evil oppressors there are three other final thoughts I’d like to give you before we close our steud on the book of nahem number one understand that the comfort of nahem regarding God’s faithfulness and Justice is not an allowance to passivity let us never say because God has promised me I no longer need to act God has given you commands alongside his promises commands such as agonize to put your sin to death work hard to provide for yourself and your family and to give to others proclaim the gospel so that people might repent and believe have mercy on the poor and oppressed expose sin and Injustice let us not put God to the test by using God’s promises as an excuse to be disobedient God’s promises are to comfort us and Empower us in our obedience not lead to laziness and apathy even as we consider the world’s Injustice and oppressions let us remember that we have a duty to oppose evil and show Mercy even as we rest in God’s promise to bring Justice number two some of you might be wondering how all this taking comfort and God’s Wrath and Justice fits with the commands of the Bible to love your enemies and to pray for them and to give them the gospel these truths may seem contradictory and there is a tension to be sure but these truths actually fit together we love our enemies and we hate wickedness at the same time when we witness evil we ought to feel both a desire to see Justice and a desire to see Mercy we ought to cry to God please have mercy on these wicked men help them realize their wickedness open their eyes so that they might cry out to you and be saved as we also pray God do not allow them to continue in their wickedness do not allow them to oppress anymore bring your Justice if they will not repent let them be confounded do not let them get away with what they do never do we hate or feel anger for our own sakes but we ought to feel righteous anger on God’s behalf we ought to feel Zeal against Injustice and blasphemy just as our Lord did when he drove the money changers out of the temple so yes let us obey the Lord’s command to love our enemies to the uttermost even doing as Jesus did laying down our lives for them but let us also work to stop oppression from continuing let us beseech the Lord to establish justice on the earth and to avenge his oppressed people and then number three as I said last week understand that the comfort of nem is only for those were truly God’s people if you still live as king of your own life if you still live in habits of sin if you still refuse to love God and worship God with all that you are then woe be to you because you are like Nineveh you are a rebel against God and an agent of Oppression in the world like Nineveh you may feel secure now you’re not yet old you’re relatively healthy you feel you do more good than bad in your life you feel smart enough to evade death and injury you’ve got a fair amount of money surely you can talk work or pay your way out of any emergency I heard you do not think so foolishly Because unless you’re absolutely perfect before God you’re unacceptable to him that’s Matthew 5:48 your tainted good works actually stink in God’s nostrils and you are not safe before him you live under God’s overhanging Wrath which could come crashing down on you at any time you could die today unexpectedly happened to others it could happen to you and if you die in this rebellious State and what will you face only God’s holy anger only God’s overwhelming judgment you would be like the foolish man the foolish rich man that Jesus describes in his Parable in Luke 12 19 to 21 the man who said to his soul soul you have many Goods laid up for many years to come take your ease eat drink and be merry but God said to him you fool this very night your soul is required of you and now who will own what you have prepared so was the man who stores of treasure for himself and is not rich toward God Nineveh did not see her judgment coming and persisted in evil till it was too late so I urge you do not make the same mistake and do not say to yourself Jesus is too loving he’s too understanding to punish me he the warning that Jesus himself gave in his Sermon on the Mount Matthew 7: 21-23 Jesus says not everyone who says to me Lord Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven but he who does the will of my father who is in heaven will enter many will say to me on that day Lord Lord did we not prophesy in your name and in your name cast out demons and in your name perform any Miracles and I will declare to them I never knew you depart from me you who practice lawlessness Jesus is not just savior he is Judge and if you do not repent of your sins Jesus will be the one who separates you as a goat from his sheep and he will say to you depart from me a cursed one into the Eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels that’s Matthew 25:41 and what’s the only reason that Jesus hasn’t judged you yet he patience his undeserved patience his great goodness and patience you have not deserved God’s mercy but he has given it to you because he is that good so do not spurn his patience do not reject his Mercy or you’ll only Heap greater judgment on yourself but what must you do repent and believe confess God to be right and you to be wrong confess him to be deserving of all worship and obedience and yourself to be a great sinner deserving God’s fiery anger a sinner unable to reconcile himself with God throw yourself upon God’s mercy as it is found in Christ take Jesus as the substitute for your sin and Trust in Jesus’s righteousness alone to make you acceptable to God give up your sin give up your own way take Jesus’s good yoke upon you submit every area of your life to his will become a true disciple of Jesus follow your master until death and you will obtain eternal life and better than that you’ll obtain God God will give himself to you turn to Jesus while you can you do not know how much time you have as nahem says in nahem 1 verses 7 to8 the Lord is good the stronghold in the day of trouble and he knows those who take refuge in him but with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of its sight and will pursue his enemies into darkness dear Calvary the day of the Lord is drawing nearer and nearer God’s judgment is eventually coming on the whole world must then live soberly while we are on the Earth but in Hope God will keep his promises to us during our sojourn even if he has to do the impossible what’s seemed more impossible than him saving us from our sins and according to God’s promise God will one day perfectly judge the wicked and vindicate his people does the he judged ass Syria according to the word of nahem let’s close in prayer God you were so great what I’ve sought to communicate to the people the greatness that you declare about yourself in your word but holy spirit I pray that you would do the work because you’re the only one with power my words don’t have power but you used the preaching of your word you use the word as the means to affect change so please affect change in your people affect change in those who don’t know you I pray God that we would all love you find our security in you run to you for your mercy and believe you because you are God worthy to be believed you will keep your promises even promises to judge the wicked and be faithful to your own I pray that every person here would be realizing that taking firm hold of that meditating on that and living lives in accordance with that truth in Jesus name amen amen

Take Comfort, God Will Destroy Evil Oppressors (Part 1)

Where is God’s justice in today’s world? In this sermon, David Capoccia examines the first part of the book of Nahum and the book’s historical context. David Capoccia explains that, even when it looks like the wicked prosper and continually get away with doing evil, God promises to bring justice. David Capoccia explores the first of three exhortations from Nahum as to how Christians are to take comfort in God’s promise of vengeance:

    1. Remember God’s Characteristic Justice and Wrath
    2. Prepare for the Stunning Reversals of God’s Judgment
    3. See Through Man’s Useless Strength and Defenses

thank you so much pastor oh it’s good to be back here at calvary thank you so much for your prayers and for your support while emma and i have been in california and at seminary we’re very very grateful the lord has provided it’s been a great uh five months or so there learning so much i’m eager to apply it and to share it with you and uh i’m looking forward to doing so with nahim do you just want to correct one thing that i i had displayed in my sunday school class this morning i said that jesus was born in a.d 6 or 4 to 6 a.d no it should be bc i said bc i think but i displayed a.d so no we’re not we don’t have a really late date for christ’s birth it should be 6 to 4 bc that’s when we most likely would say christ was born but let’s take a look at our word this morning and before we do that let’s pray god thank you so much for this opportunity thank you for this word all of your word is relevant to us the book of nahum is relevant to us we need to hear this word so i pray that you would help me god to be able to explain it and to explain it with the impact that it deserves oh spirit please work among your people today i pray that we would be changed we’d be encouraged that we’d be convicted by what you have in this book pray please work now oh spirit glorify yourself oh god in jesus name amen okay how long o lord how long have you ever said that to god this pointed phrase appears a number of times in the bible and when the phrase appears it’s usually in a context in which an oppressed righteous person asks how long until god judges evil listen to a few sample passages where we see this phrase psalm 79 psalm 79 5-7 says this how long o lord will you be angry forever will your jealousy burn like fire pour out your wrath upon the nations which do not know you and upon the kingdoms which do not call upon your name for they have devoured jacob and laid waste his habitation another one psalm 94 psalm 94 verses 1 to 3 o lord god of vengeance god of vengeance shine forth rise up o judge of the earth render recompense to the proud how long shall the wicked o lord how long shall the wicked exalt and then revelation revelation 6 10 we see this phrase again and the martyrs cried out with a loud voice saying how long o lord holy and true will you refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth god’s people have asked since since ancient days how long will you allow us to be afflicted how long will you allow evil to triumph how long until you bring justice and we can ask the same question today for do we not live in a day in which evil triumphs and oppresses in various places how long o lord will you allow islamic terrorists to continue to glory in their suicide bombings how long o lord will you allow governments and peoples around the world to shut out the gospel and to arrest and even execute your christians how long o lord will you allow sex trafficking prostitution and pornography to flourish girls and women all over the world sold and degraded because of greedy men how long o lord will you permit parents to murder their unborn children how long o lord will you overlook arrogant courts giving rulings which in the name of tolerance make it illegal to speak about or practice your good word how long o lord will businesses get away with unscrupulous practices for the sake of profit how long o lord will you allow false teachers to lead people astray and blaspheme your name and it can get personal how long o lord will you allow this certain person in my life to persecute me for doing what is right and it also embraces the spiritual realm how long o lord will satan and his demons and the wicked world system he controls succeed we could ask many similar questions and these questions are not unwarranted because god claims to be a god full of justice and zeal for what is good so god where is your justice why does evil continue to oppress and triumph will evil really go unpunished at the root of these questions is the faithfulness of god god has promised in his word to judge the wicked and vindicate the righteous so god when will we see you keep your promise god responds to such questions in his bible and we’re going to see one of those responses today in the book of nahum so open there if you haven’t done so already the book of nahum short often neglected book near the end of the old testament five books before malachi so if you just find malachi you can go back a couple pages or so it’s right after micah jonah micah nahim or in the book of nahim nahim is part of a group of books that we call the minor prophets unfortunately many today see nahim as irrelevant and even an embarrassing book such people dismiss nahim’s prophecy as a mere hymn of hate it was a hymn of hate from an ancient hebrew about an enemy that no longer exists how could such a book be applicable or appropriate for disciples of jesus on the contrary we will see as we look at the book ourselves the name has critical words to say to us regarding god’s justice and god’s faithfulness make no mistake this prophecy was written for our instruction as well that we might take comfort that we might gain confidence and that we might have a sober hope for the future we’re going to take two weeks to examine this short but powerful book this first week we’ll introduce ourselves to the historical context of the book of nahim and we’ll explore the first of the book’s three main points next week we’ll investigate the second and third points of the book before we begin looking at the message of nahim we really need to orient ourselves to the book’s historical setting indeed the historical occasion of this book is critical to our understanding and appreciation of what is declared in it so look with me just at nahum 1 1 am chapter 1 verse 1 where we read the oracle of nineveh the book of the vision of nahum the elkashite this book is an oracle or burden of prophecy given by god to the prophet nahum regarding nineveh now though the subject of this prophecy is nineveh and much of the book is addressed to nineveh and to its king the audience receiving this prophecy is not actually nineveh it’s judah this is a prophecy about nineveh given to judah now who is nahum well the bible tells us almost nothing about this man except what is revealed here in this verse nahum is a hebrew prophet his name means comfort and he comes from el kash we don’t know exactly where that is different theories have been put forward though nahim’s personal background is murky his message is not it is a burden of judgment against this city nineveh what is nineveh well nineveh was a great city in upper mesopotamia you may remember nineveh was the city that the prophet jonah reluctantly visited with a message from god back in the book of jonah which would those events would have taken place between 800 and 750 bc jonah did not want the people of nineveh to repent and be saved but the people did repent and god spared them from a coming calamity nineveh was still a great city in the days of nahim actually nineveh had become even greater the city was located in the northern part of what is today iraq it’s right across from the city of mosul that is its ruins are right across from the city of mosul nineveh was a city built between two rivers the great tigris river and the smaller coaster river along with these rivers a city featured a great aqueduct and various canals as well as a moat of water that surrounded the city’s walls indeed nineveh was a city associated with water much like venice is today i think nineveh think water messiah is making nineveh beautiful the water of nineveh made this city nearly impossible to conquer the canals and moat dramatically augmented the city’s defenses and the river passing through the city along with the aqueduct meant that trying to siege the city into submission was useless in nahum’s day nineveh was the capital of the assyrian empire one of the world’s first great empires historians call this empire the neo-assyrian empire began its rise around 900 bc and began to expand dramatically through conquest around 750 bc assyria subdued the medes and the persians in the this would be to you to the northeast the babylonians in the southeast and the hittites in the northwest so all their neighbors conquered subdued assyria then turned to syria assyria and syria are different places syria was right above israel the northern neighbor assyria conquered syria and then it attacked one of the two kingdoms of israel the divided kingdom period divided kingdom period we had the kingdom of israel samaria and the north judah to the south in 722 bc assyria conquers samaria when samaria fell whoever wasn’t massacred by the assyrians was taken in exile northern kingdom was no more in contrast to this northern kingdom though judah under king ahaz sought protection from assyria they submitted to a syria’s overlordship but this protection came at a cost judah owed ongoing tribute to assyria they had to pay money they had to pay this tribute and assyrian culture and religion began to find its way into judean society despite jonah’s beef brief ministry in nineveh syria was a proud and idolatrous nation and it enriched itself via the conquest and the domination of its neighbors syria was an incredibly effective war machine well known for its aggression brutality terror and duplicity for somewhat of a modern parallel think nazi germany just incredibly effective war machine brutal deceitful people listen to one of the boasts of an assyrian king this is found via archaeology quote i destroyed i demolished i burned i took their warriors prisoner and impaled them on stakes before their cities i flayed the nobles as many as had rebelled and spread their skins out on the piles of dead corpses many of the captives i burned in fire many i took alive from some i cut off their hands to the right from others i cut off their noses ears and fingers i put out the eyes of many of the soldiers unquote around 705 bc the righteous king hezekiah of judah rebelled against assyria threw off the assyrian yoke but assyria responded by invading and devastating judah every fortified city of judah fell until only jerusalem was left king hezekiah sought peace with assyria promising to submit again to a syrian rule and pay whatever assyria required the king of assyria imposed a huge indemnity of hundreds of tons of silver and gold and hezekiah sent the payment in order to obtain peace however the king of assyria betrayed his word and after accepting the payment he moved to besiege jerusalem anyways you may know how the rest of the story goes hezekiah turned to god in the face of this proud king of assyria who was boldly blaspheming the god of israel saying who is going to save you from me god then sent one angel and that angel killed 185 000 assyrian soldiers causing the assyrians to withdraw without even firing an arrow toward jerusalem jerusalem was saved but judean independence did not last long hezekiah’s son the wicked king manasseh also ward with assyria but manasseh was defeated he was defeated and taken prisoner to assyria he did actually repent of his evil ways and he eventually returned to israel but because of his defeat judah again came under assyria’s domination they were under the cruel yoke of assyria once again so by about 650 bc basically the whole of the middle east was under assyrian control the last serious rebellion against assyria’s domination which had arisen around the great egyptian city of thebes was crushed by syria in 663 bc by the way much of this historical information i’m giving to you is recorded in second kings 15 to 23 and second chronicles 5 28 and then 32 and 33. so the bible talks about a lot of this it is in this historical context that nahum prophesies his oracle on nineveh and consequently on assyria and its king is given sometime between 663 and 630 bc so that’s about 100 years or 150 years after jonah so assyria this wicked blasphemous treacherous nation is at the height of its power the northern kingdom of ireal israel is wiped out the southern kingdom of judah is subdued and oppressed no one is able to challenge the assyrian superpower in this situation we can understand how judah must have been asking the same questions that we mentioned earlier how long o lord why are you letting assyria prosper why does their evil continue unchecked do you not care for us we are your people but we are oppressed will you not act against evil where is your justice god had a message for judah through nahim about the situation with assyria and that message is contained in my sermon title name’s message to judah regarding assyria is essentially the same message that god gives to all christians today as they face ongoing evil what is that message it is this take comfort i will destroy evil oppressors take comfort this is the message of nahin take comfort god will destroy evil oppressors let’s now consider how god presents this message to judah and by extension to us we can divide the book of nahum into three main sections communicating three main ideas i’m going to articulate these ideas in the form of three exhortations from god as to how we ought to behave in the face of ongoing evil that is how are we to take comfort in god’s promise to judge evil oppressors here are the three points number one remember god’s characteristic justice and wrath number two prepare for the stunning reversals of god’s judgment number three see through man’s useless strength and defenses as i said earlier earlier we will only get through one point of nahim today we’ll look at the other two points in their sections next week let’s now read the text in which we find our first section and our first point so that’s going to be nahum chapter 1 verse to nahum chapter 2 verse 2. so 2-2 starting in verse 2 of chapter 1 follow along with me as i read a jealous and avenging god is the lord the lord is avenging and wrathful the lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and he reserves wrath for his enemies the lord is slow to anger and great in power and the lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished and whirlwind and storm is his way and clouds are the dust beneath his feet he rebukes the sea and makes it dry he dries up all the rivers bashan and carmel wither the blossoms of lebanon wither mountains quake because of him and the hills dissolve indeed the earth is upheaved by his presence the world and all the inhabitants in it who can stand before his indignation who can endure the burning of his anger his wrath is poured out like fire and the rocks are broken up by him the lord is good a stronghold in the day of trouble and he knows those who take refuge in him but with an overwhelming flood or with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of its sight and he will pursue his enemies into darkness whatever you devise against the lord he will make a complete end of it distress will not rise up twice like tangled thorns and like those who are drunken with their drink they are consumed as stubble completely withered from you has gone forth one who plotted evil against the lord a wicked counselor thus says lord though they are many though they are at full strength and likewise many even so they will be cut off and pass away though i have afflicted you i will afflict you no longer so now i will break his yoke bar from upon you and i will tear off your shackles the lord has issued a command concerning you your name will no longer be perpetuated i will cut off idol and image from the house of your gods i will prepare your grave for you are contemptible behold on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news who announces peace celebrate your feasts so judah pay your vows for never again will the wicked one pass through you he is cut off completely the one who scatters has come up against you man the fortress watch the road strengthen your back summon all your strength for the lord will restore the splendor of jacob like the splendor of israel even though devastators have devastated them and destroyed their vine branches that is our text in these verses we see our first point of comfort from god in the face of evil here’s the first point remember god’s characteristic justice and wrath remember god’s characteristic justice and wrath notice that the first place that god directs the minds of his oppressed people is god’s character god says do you wonder where just judgment is don’t forget who i am notice verses 2 and 3 god in particular tells judah to remember that god is a god of holy wrath just notice the repetition of these terms in verse 2 avenging avenging wrath vengeance wrath god has not forgotten who he is he is the holy god that unleashes overwhelming holy anger against those who do evil verse 3 further clarifies that yes god is a patient god even a god who forgives with proper atonement but god will never allow the unatoned that is the guilty to go unpunished that language by the way that phrasing is actually a an illusion allusion to something that the lord said back in the torah back in exodus 34. that’s the section where god’s glory passes by moses and god declares his long name what we call the long name of the lord here’s exodus 34 verses 5-8 you don’t have to turn there but just listen exodus 34 verses 5-8 the lord descended in the cloud and stood there with moses as moses called upon the name of the lord and the lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed the lord the lord god compassionate and gracious slow to anger about and abounding and loving kindness and truth who keeps loving kindness for thousands who forgives iniquity transgression and sin yet he will by no means leave the guilty unpunished visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations moses made haste to bow low toward the earth and worship that was the response to god revealing his character so verse three and nahim here is calling back to mind the nature of god as declared by god himself in the book of exodus notice also in the beginning of this chapter one of nahum the repetition of the name the lord remember that when you see that that term in all capital letters in your bible this is really in the hebrew yahweh the special covenant name that god gave himself to moses and to all israel that this name which translates to i am emphasizes god’s eternal nature god’s perfect self-sufficiency and his unchangeability this is the name that god revealed specially to israel it is a name that connotes god’s special covenant with the people he chose by using this name so noticeably and repeatedly here at the beginning of nahim god emphasizes i don’t change i am the same covenant-keeping god who entered into special relationship with you now as i was then i will never forget my justice nor will i forget my promises to you i am and will be faithful notice how in the middle of verse 3 down to verse 6 nahum gives us a visual illustrating god’s overwhelming and powerful wrath god is described here like a mighty storm with blistering wings and rolling clouds when god’s wrathful presence arrives the earth itself cannot help but tremble the sea flees the river dries up fertile and beautiful lands like the plain of bashan and the slopes of mount carmel and mount lebanon they immediately wither and become barren the mountain themselves they tremble and break apart the world is upheaved just at the arrival of the god of wrath and he hasn’t even done anything yet and if this is how the land and its great mountains react to god how will wicked man fare the beginning of verse 6 appropriately asks who can stand before his indignation who could possibly endure his burning anger the implied answer is no one god’s wrath goes out like fire and breaks up even the mighty rocks verse 7 pauses to remind us that god’s wrath is not sent on everyone for those who seek refuge in yahweh god’s overwhelming power is their security yahweh is good to them but notice the contrast in verse 8 not so the wicked for them god sends an overwhelming flood of judgment that pursues god’s enemies into darkness that is the realm of darkness into the land of the dead notice the phrase he will make a complete end of its sight here we have introduced for the first time in nahim since the title a particular recipient of god’s wrath there will be a particular place that will experience an overwhelming flood of god’s wrath and that flood will bring the inhabitants into darkness and we’re going to see later that this flood is not just figurative it’s not just a expression there’s a little literal aspect to it verse 8 then functions as a transition verse in this section nahim transitions transitions us from hearing about god’s judgment his characteristic judgment against enemies in pre in general to god’s wrath against one particular proud enemy verse 9 makes this shift even more explicit since we hear for the first time a you whatever you devise against the lord he will make a complete end of it verses 9 to 12 tell us that there is a people and one from among that people who make evil plans against yahweh against the great i am and notice how the verses emphasize the totally foolish nature of this venture whatever you plot against me god says i will totally overturn it i won’t need to act against you twice you will be consumed like dry brambles are consumed by fire you will stagger and become incapacitated like a drunk man even if you’re at the height of your power if you are full and many even so i will cut you off and make you pass away what is this talking about who is this well we already know from verse one this is god talking about his wrath against assyria against nineveh its capital city and against its king that he’s the wicked counselor who leads his nation to conspire against king yahweh but nineveh isn’t the only addressee here there’s a back and forth nature to these latter these latter verses in chapter one the middle of verse 12 and verse 13 switched to address one oppressed by this wicked plotting people oppressed by assyria and notice what does god promise this other people he says the affliction i brought against you will come to an end i will break his that is the king of assyrias i will break his yoke on you and tear away his shackles to whom is nahim speaking here this is judah this is the surviving kingdom of israel they are the ones who are experiencing the brutal yoke of assyria god had allowed this god actually says that he brought it about i brought this affliction on you he says nevertheless god says i’m going to judge the wicked agent of your affliction the cruel yoke will now be torn off of you judah in verse 14 yahweh turns back to address the king of assyria what does he declare here it says a command has gone out from god to cut off the king’s name and his lineage from the earth moreover god promises to cut off the king’s gods and images god will even prepare a grave for this wicked boastful king this king is going to die god declares by the way if you’re wondering how do we know it’s the king well in the hebrew there’s a little bit more information on the term u in english we use u for singular and plural masculine and feminine but in hebrew it’s more specific so you you can know in the hebrew these are talking about the king here based on those extra indicators on the word you so god says this king he’s going to be judged this king is going to die and why notice the 4 in verse 14. what’s the reason for this king being brought to the grave because you are contemptible god says you are a light thing to me you are nothing great or worthy of respect whatever you think of yourself what other whatever others think of you you ought to be despised as a worthless thing you are contemptible this section ends with god giving two sets of directions to two different peoples to judah and her people on the one hand and nineveh and her king and people on the other what is god’s direction for judah notice verse 15 celebrate god says judah celebrate look messengers have come with good news they announced peace what peace the wicked one the brutal and blasphemous king of assyria will not come through you anymore he is cut off therefore you people of god celebrate pay your vows offer sacrifices of thanks to god for he has remembered you and has recompensed the wicked you may recognize this phrase at the beginning of verse 15 about beautiful feet haven’t we seen this elsewhere in scripture actually even in sunday school we mentioned it we have it’s first used in isaiah 52 where god or where isaiah describes the coming of king yahweh to rescue and save his people here’s isaiah 52 verses 5 to isaiah 52 5-8 now therefore what do i have here declares the lord seeing that my people have been taken away without cause again the lord declares those who rule over them how and my name is continually blasphemed all day long therefore my people shall know my name therefore in that day i am the one who is speaking here i am how lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news who announces peace and brings good news of happiness who announces salvation and says to zion your god reigns listen your watchmen lift up their voices they shout joyfully together for they will see with their own eyes when the lord restores zion that’s isaiah but this phrase is also used in one other place in the bible new testament in the book of romans paul uses this phrase to describe the preaching of the gospel romans 10 verses 14 to 17 romans 10 14 to 17. paul writes how then will they call on him and whom they have not believed how will they believe in him and whom they have not heard and now will they hear without a preacher how will they preach unless they are sent just as it is just as it is written how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things however they did not all heed the good news for isaiah says lord who has believed our report so faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of christ maybe asking yourself what do these passages all have to do with each other what do they each of the uses of this phrase about messengers and their feet have in common actually there’s a striking similarity and each situation god is announcing what he that is he by himself has done or will do for his people salvation and in each instance what does god require his people to do nothing nothing except believe and celebrate just believe and celebrate god has done it all god will do it all you don’t have to do anything just believe and rejoice over the kind faithfulness of your god this is god’s message to judah through nahim god will keep his promises to you god will stay true to his nature you will hear messengers of good news in the future detailing to you what god has done all by himself on your behalf therefore be no longer anxious be no longer troubled believe and rejoice contrast this message with what god commands assyria to do in chapter 2 verses 1 and 2.

what must assyria do not celebrate get ready for battle god declares the one who scatters is coming up against you enemy armies are preparing to besiege you so get ready battle stations send out your sentries war is coming but notice there’s a certain irony in this command because even while god commands you should get ready for battle verse 2 says or verse 2 indicates your preparations will do you no good because god has promised i will restore the splendor of israel i will restore that splendor even though devastators devastators like you assyria have come up against them even though you’ve devastated them i’m going to restore them and just as god changed the name of jacob to israel an illustration of god’s glorious abrahamic covenant so god will also transform the remnant of jacob in judah into the glorious covenant vindicated kingdom of israel assyria god declares your necessary role is to prepare for battle and fall i will glorify the people you devastated because i keep covenant with them you cannot celebrate as they do there is nothing left for you to do o nineveh except to brace for impact prepare for your doom and destruction would not all this be a great message of comfort to judah and the days of a serious unchallenged domination god tells judah remember that i have not changed my zeal for holiness and justice are as infinitely strong as ever my nature demands that i judge evil i have not forgotten you or assyria my fury will break out against nineveh and its king assyria will have to prepare for destruction while you prepare for celebration i will vindicate your trust in my justice i will vindicate your belief in my faithfulness so calvary this is also nahum’s first point to us when you face ongoing evil remember god’s characteristic justice and wrath now god has further comfort for his people god doesn’t just want to make promises based off his character god also wants to illustrate how these promises will be fulfilled what it’s going to look like and that is going to give further confidence and comfort to his people and next time we’ll see how god does that second and third points again just to kind of preview that number two prepare for the stunning reversals of god’s judgment and then number three see through man’s useless strength and defenses but from what we’ve seen thus far how can we apply this divine instruction into our lives though nahim though nahim’s prophecy primarily points us to confidence in god’s vengeance we can more generally apply nahum’s message in confidence in god’s faithfulness in every area this includes your salvation will god keep his promises to save you remember god’s character this includes your trials well god i’ll actually illustrate this many of you are facing situations in your lives in which the promises of god are being put to the test for instance you know god has promised to provide for your physical and financial needs but now you’re not seeing that provision your savings have dried up or you suddenly have some new unexpected expenses you don’t know how you’ll meet them can you still believe god can you still rejoice confidently in god’s future provision or maybe you know that god has promised to be with you and take care of you as you are faithful and obedient witness for him but telling others about jesus is costing you some of your family and friends don’t want to talk to you anymore can you still believe god can you still rejoice confidently in his future care and vindication of your faith or maybe you’re seeking to be a faithful parent to your children but despite your living a godly life before them and exercising loving and consistent discipline your children still rebel can you still believe god can you still rejoice confidently that he will perfectly provide both for you and for your children whatever the trial you are now facing or that you will face know that a proper response includes the exact same attitude that nahim is driving us toward take comfort god will keep his promises to you and how do you know that because these promises are tied to god’s character and god’s character does not change therefore remember god’s character remember god’s characteristic wisdom and faithfulness remember his essential love and compassion his unchanging strength and power he will not fail you wait for the lord’s vindication however long it takes to come it will come you will see those messengers with their beautiful feet and you will hear a glorious message of good news but more directly as we think about the different kinds of ongoing evil that exists in our world today or that we encounter or that oppresses us whether it’s personal familial national international we must remember god’s good justice and wrath as i said as we’ve said repeatedly god’s character does not change he is the same holy god of nahum chapter 1 as he is of exodus chapter 34 as the years of america 2017.

god’s wrath is still awe-inspiring and overwhelming his wrath will still be justly poured out on evil god kept his promise to judge and destroy assyria next week we will see how but know then if god kept his promise there he will keep his promises to judge today’s evil so stop despairing over evil stop being discouraged stop acting as if god might not vindicate the righteous or bring recompense to the wicked no that’s your god reigns vengeance is his vindication is his evil may triumph four times but god will triumph in the end wait for the lord’s revealed salvation good news will come believe and celebrate rejoice in the unbreakable goodness and faithfulness of god one final application remember that the comfort of nahim that we’ve just been describing is only for those who truly belong to god if you do not belong to god if you do not acknowledge him if you do not love him if you do not serve him with everything that you are if you do not submit to him in every area of your life if you persist in your own way and on your own path of sin then you are in the place of nineveh not judah you yourself despite what you present yourself or think of yourself to be on the outside you yourself are an agent of evil you are an agent of oppression you are a source of discouragement to god’s people you’re a slave of satan the new testament would or the new testament would say in in that language jesus says that if you are not with him then you are against him there is no neutral ground with god if you are not a servant of christ then you are a servant of the devil and the cries of god’s righteous for justice are also against you will god not hear his children’s cries don’t think that god doesn’t see your sin and that he doesn’t know the true affections of your heart god knows everything neither suppose that god doesn’t care about your sin remember god’s character he’s too good he’s too just to let what deserves justice to just go god is a god of fearful and holy anger anger against sin and he does not change beware the fate of nineveh and assyria if you do not repent you too will likewise perish and not just now but forever so escape while you can the wrath of god god is such a god who pardons iniquity that’s even mentioned here in nahim but he will by no means leave the guilty unpunished so come to jesus come to god’s only way of salvation while you can repent of your sin turn away from it take jesus as your only righteousness and as the sacrifice to satisfy god’s anger against you turn over your whole life to jesus make god your master because then god will be your strong tower and your place of safety when the day of judgment comes you will not be carried away in the overwhelming flood of wrath god is patient but his patient doesn’t his patience does not last forever god will act at the right time in judgment to destroy the wicked and vindicate his own to let us remember god’s character let’s remember his faithfulness let’s close in prayer god this is a great word it is a sober word it is a word that’s often not mentioned today but it is the truth god we do praise you for your justice we do praise you even for your wrath because that is that is only right how could you ever overlook evil how could you ever overlook oppression how could you just say oh that doesn’t matter to me you’re too good for that and yet god we’re so grateful we’re so grateful that you provided a way in mercy for us to be saved from your wrath even as we were talking about in sunday school today you provided a savior you provided a way for us to have peace with you thank you god for for doing that for bringing us into your strong tower but god as we think about the different sources of ongoing evil today lord we thank you for this word that shows us that we don’t need to be discouraged we don’t have to wonder will wickedness ultimately triumph we know we know what your word says we know your character you’re too just for that you’re too good so god we will wait we will wait for your vindication we will wait for your vengeance we will leave those things to you and we will rejoice until that day comes but i pray that you would do your necessary work and the people who have heard this message today build them up cause them to run after you enjoy in jesus name amen

    God Judges Nations

Answers Bible Curriculum Year 2 Quarter 3 Lesson 5

This week in Sunday school, we’re looking at the book of Nahum and God’s prophecy against Assyria. What exactly did God announce to Assyria? Why did God make this pronouncement? How does Nahum’s revelation compare to Jonah’s? How can a just God use one nation to judge another nation for its sin and then judge the afflicting nation for inflicting God’s punishment? And what can we learn from Nahum to apply in our own lives today? We’ll consider these questions and more.

right let’s get started welcome to Sunday school we come to the book of Nahum this morning and God’s prophecy regarding Assyria the title of today’s class is God judges Nations last week we saw how God judged Israel whom did God bring to destroy Israel and carry its people away Syria same Nation we’re talking about today the capital of Israel Samaria was besieged for three years what date BC did it fall 722 or 721 BC around that time why did this judgment come upon Israel yeah yeah it was that they were sinful they were idolatrous and they refused to repent but it wasn’t that Israel refused to serve God at all but as we saw last week that they sought to serve other gods at the same time as God but does God what does God think about this syncretistic or divided devotion foreign yeah it’s spiritual adultery if you serve God alongside other gods then you’re not really serving God at all it is you serve God only or you do not serve him at all he hates divided devotion it’s impossible it is Blasphemous to him and so we need to learn from Israel’s from Israel’s sin unless we serve and worship God Alone we do not serve or worship God at all we are just as much under the Judgment of God as if we had openly repudiated God if we live in such a way let us heed the warning given to us from Second Kings about Israel of course the people who came into land after Israel did the exact same thing questions or comments about last week’s lesson okay well Assyria was God’s agent of judgment on Israel but God also had a word of Prophecy to speak to Assyria after the Judgment of Israel had taken place and this prophecy is what we’re going to be looking at today the book of Naaman Nahum in which this prophecy appears is only three chapters and we’re actually going to look at the whole book together today but even though this is a fairly short amount of text there’s a lot to say about it so we’re going to be hearing a lot of information today please hold your extra questions or comments till the end here’s our outline for today’s class we’re going to orient ourselves the historical situation of nahim we’re then going to observe the three chapters in nahim then we’ll ask and answer a number of interpretation questions and we’ll finally consider application based on what we learned from God in his book of the prophecy of Nahum let’s pray God I pray that you would make this word very clear to us help us to understand it and help us to apply it help me to be able to explain it well in Jesus name amen please open your Bibles to the book of nahim it’s on page 9 30 in the Pew bibles if you’re using those if not just keep going towards the end of the Old Testament nahim is one of the last books in the Old Testament after Jonah after Micah you find Nahum it comes right before habakkuk and Zechariah so page 930 in the few Bible we’re going to read this book in sections but before we do so let’s Orient ourselves to the historical situation by just reading verse 1 and then talking about the context so nahim won one I’ll read the Oracle of Nineveh the book of the vision of Nahum the elkashite I noticed the word Oracle here this word is also translated burden or prophecy this is a supernatural Revelation given by God as a commission to his prophet to declare to God’s intended audience well what is the intended audience it says here the Oracle of Nineveh we’re going to see that as we go through this book this Oracle is not just about Nineveh but it is actually addressed to Nineveh Nineveh is the primary audience What’s significant about the city of Nineveh not Babylonian but yes Jonah went to the same city it was the um it was a city that he had gone to and preached to and in which the people had repented why else is Nineveh significant Nineveh is the capital of the Assyrian Empire so here’s our map again of the Syrian Empire after 671 BC it’s all that light and dark green uh Nineveh I don’t have my laser pointer with me right now but Nineveh is in the Northeast section Babylonia is that Southeast section but Nineveh is the Northeast section and that’s where Assyria originates but its empire spread quite far anyways but Nineveh is the capital of Assyria it was the same one that Jonah is the same place that Jonah had visited and while this prophecy is addressed to just Nineveh it really encompasses the whole Syrian Empire just as when God was prophesying against Samaria he was really prophesying to all Israel when he prophesies against the capital has implications for the rest of the nation so it is here for Assyria we’re talking to Nineveh we’re talking to Nina or to Assyria in this book God sent Jonah to Nineveh somewhere between 800 to 750 BC and that Ministry to Nineveh and Assyria really happened before a serious great expansion as an Empire Syria has existed for a long time but they were big they contracted and before they got big again that’s when Jonah went to them but a considerable amount of time has gone by since Jonah this prophecy to Nineveh comes at the height of its power as Syria now dominates this is basically the the territory in green is the situation in the book of nahim Assyria now dominates the Middle East it has gained control over Egypt as well Egypt was their rival in the southwest they now control Egypt along the Babylonia and all the Central Middle East and because and we get this a little bit from the details in this book as we’ll see since Assyria is in this state we can date the prophecy of nahim to sometime around 650 BC so this is about 100 to 150 years after Jonah things have changed a little bit in Assyria and Nineveh certainly things have changed in the Empire so here’s the historical situation of Assyria but what about nahim it says this is the the rest of verse 1 says this is the book of the vision of Nahum the elkashite who exactly is nahim well the Bible tells us basically nothing about name though the name nahim appears in the genealogy of Christ in Luke 3 it’s not the same name him can’t be the same name him and we’re told they nahim is an elkashite but even that information is ambiguous is that the place of his birth is that the place of his ministry and even if we could determine that where is elkosh we don’t know some suggest that it could be uh in Iraq which would be in Assyria there’s a site there today are ruin our I don’t know if it’s a town or a room but El alkoosh which kind of sounds like elkash so maybe that’s the one think they think perhaps maybe it was in Galilee perhaps Capernaum Capernaum means the city of Nahum but it could also simply mean the city of comfort because that’s what nahim means or maybe in Judah because we’re going to see in a moment this book has some things to say about Judah so he could have been an Israelite a descendant of an Israelite captive in Assyria or he could have been Prophet from Judah who just happened to deliver a message to Assyria so we don’t really know much about nahim but that’s actually not super important more important than who nahim is or where he’s from is the message the nahim has for Assyria let’s now start looking at that message we’re going to read the first section of chapter one verses two to eight so find that verse and follow along with me as I read his prophecy begins a jealous and avenging God is the Lord the Lord is avenging and wrathful the Lord takes Vengeance on his adversaries and he reserves wrath for his enemies the Lord is slow to anger and great in power and the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished and Whirlwind and storm is his way and clouds are the dust beneath his feet he rebukes the sea and makes it dry he dries up all the rivers Bashan and Carmel wither the blossoms of Lebanon wither Mountain’s Quake because of him and the hills dissolve indeed the Earth is upheaved by his presence the world and all the inhabitants in it who can stand before his indignation who can endure the burning of his anger his wrath is poured out like fire and the rocks are broken up by him the Lord is good a stronghold in the day of trouble and he knows those who take refuge in him boat but with an overwhelming flood he will make a complete end of its sight and will pursue his enemies Into Darkness okay let’s observe some details of this first section what do verses 2 to the beginning of verse 3 declare to us about God it does say he’s slow to anger but that’s not the main idea of verses two to the beginning of verse 3.

there’s another another quality of God that’s highlighted yeah Roy or that’s right right we’re seeing a lot of emphasis in these first couple verses on God’s Wrath he’s avenging and wrathful takes Vengeance on his adversaries his enemies if you’re an enemy of God his wrath is great oh you slow to anger but if you’re an enemy his wrath is great he will not leave you unpunished if you are an enemy if you are guilty what kind of images do we then see involving God in the end of verse 3 down to verse 5.

series of pictures but what do they all have in common yeah that’s great God’s great power is Manifest where on the earth it’s as if the Earth cannot handle the overwhelming power of God he just says something or he moves into an area and the mountains Quake the hills dissolve the the sea becomes dry totally or Rivers just totally disappear as soon as he comes near that’s the overwhelming power of God we get pictures involving the great power and authority of God now there’s a question two questions in verse six what’s the expected answer to those questions no one the expected answer is no one who can stand before his indignation his wrath who can endure his Burning Anger he is power you see his great wrath no one no one can stand before it then there’s a contrast presented in the last two verses of this section verses seven and eight what’s the contrast for which people that’s right so to those who trust in God this great powerful avenging wrathful God he’s a place of protection he is a stronghold in the day of trouble for those who he knows take refuge in him but in contrast to that what have we told in verse 8.

how does God respond to his enemies yeah Rob yeah he’s going to consume them with an overwhelming flood he will make a complete end of its sight wherever they are a flood will find them he will pursue his enemies Into Darkness so we have this contrast on the one hand those who take refuge in God he’s their protection but on the other hand his enemies will be pursued as with a flood even Into Darkness and in all of this nothing is yet been said about Nineveh or specifically against Any Nation but that changes in the next section let’s now look at verses 9 to 15.

I’ve seen this first section some truths but let’s see what the rest of the chapter has to say verse 9.

whatever you devise against the Lord he will make a complete end of it distress will not rise up twice like Tangled thorns and like those who are drunken with their drink they are consumed as stubble completely withered from you has gone forth one who plotted evil against the Lord a wicked counselor thus says the Lord though they are at full strength and likewise many even so they will be cut off and pass away though I have Afflicted you I will afflict you no longer so now I will break his yoke bar from upon you and I will tear off your shackles the Lord has issued a command concerning you your name will no longer be perpetuated I will cut off Idol an image from the house of your Gods I will prepare your grave for you are contemptible behold on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news who announces peace celebrate your Feast so Judah pay your vows for never again will the wicked one pass through you he is cut off completely all right let’s make some more observations there appears to be a contradiction in this section and resolving this contradiction I think will be helpful before we observe further what’s the apparent contradiction yeah Craig well we’ll get to that you mentioned that God uses Syria to judge Israel but now he’s a judging of Syria we’ll talk a little bit about that issue a little bit later on but but here I want to focus on the fact that we have promises that seem to contradict each other on the one hand all right well let’s what are the two promises that seem to contradict each other yeah Joe okay okay all right you’ve got you’ve got to where where I was um what I wanted to point out from the text which is we seem to have promises of restoration and freedom from oppression but also Promises of total Destruction I don’t know where uh and Prophecies of judgment is that referring back to nineveh’s First experience with god well I think the the better way to contr or to resolve this contradiction is to realize that someone else is being addressed here other than Nineveh right because we have Nineveh mentioned very beginning but what other nation is mentioned in this section Judah so what we what we’ve really got are words of Declaration to two different nations some to Assyria some to Judah and this makes sense of of what we see here now remember Judah still exists at this time Israel has been um removed Israel fell in 722 to 721 BC but Judah will continue to exist for another 150 years it will last till 587 to 586 BC Judah was at times subject to Assyria but Judah also fought against Assyria you may remember as an example a certain righteous King who fought against Assyria he was besieged in Jerusalem and then miraculously delivered by God which king was that Hezekiah remember the general and king of Assyria actually boasted against Yahweh and said your gods are not going to be able to save you your king is not going to be able to save you and Hezekiah brought those boasts into the temple of God or brought those boasts before God and he said hear his threats and vindicate us well God did even though or God did as the enemies were blaspheming him so we’ve got two Nations being addressed in this section and that I think will help us make sense of it look back at verse 11.

and God says well God prophesies there and points out one who plotted evil against the Lord a wicked counselor to which nation is he speaking yeah this is Nineveh Assyria says from you came that Wicked counselor but and he says that you have devised evil plans against me but what does God promise regarding these plans how successful are these plans going to be nobody comes they they will be cut off their plans will come to nothing whatever you devise against the Lord he will make a complete end of it verse 9.

Assyria and your king whatever you devise against the Lord it will come to nothing God addresses Judah in verses 12 to 13 as we pointed out God promises to Judah restoration or maybe better to say a removal of Oppression verse 12 um and though they must mean Assyria here though they are at full strength and likewise many even so they will be cut off and passed away though I have Afflicted you with Assyria I will afflict you no longer I will break his yoke bar from upon you and I will tear off your shackles I will remove the oppression from you Judah what does God promise about Assyria in verse 14.

yeah oh you’re gonna say something today yeah these are Promises of Destruction I will cut off your name I will cut off your idols there’s perhaps here a specific prophecy to the king of Assyria not just to the nation you will be destroyed but also you you King your line will be destroyed and all your Gods will will be destroyed and then God promises again something to Judah it tells them to celebrate because their wicked enemy will be completely destroyed never again will the wicked one pass through you he is cut off completely all right let’s pause and interpret just a little bit based off of these two chapters I mean these two sections how does the second half of chapter one relate to the first half of chapter one exactly we saw in the beginning what kind of God God is what he does to those who fear Him and what he does to those who are his enemies and then we see that manifest specifically in history it says Judah you fear me I’m going to protect you I’m going to remove the oppression from you Assyria you’re my enemy I’m going to completely destroy you so we’re seeing the specific application of God’s character and how he reacts to his enemies this first chapter really sets the stage for the rest of the book Nineveh and Judah are reminded of God’s character and then they receive announcement broadly of what God will do the rest of the book though is going to really focus on Nineveh and Assyria so let’s now look at the rest of the book in Chapter 2 and we’ll read verses one to five this is the next section I want us to observe what does God have more to say about Nineveh and Assyria look at verse 1 of chapter two the one who scatters has come up against you man The Fortress watch the road strengthen your back summon all your strength for the Lord will restore the Splendor of Jacob like the Splendor of Israel even though Devastators have devastated them and destroyed their Vine branches the shields of his mighty men are colored red the Warriors are dressed in Scarlet the Chariots are enveloped in flashing steel when he is prepared to March and the Cypress Spears are brandished the Chariots raced madly in the streets they Rush wildly in the squares their appearances like torches they Dash to and fro like lightning flashes he remembers his Nobles they stumble in their March they hurry to her wall and the mantlet is set up okay let’s observe God is speaking to Nineveh again here the one who scatters has come up against you what does God command a Nineveh to do verse one what does he command that’s right repair your defenses you’re ready for battle Nineveh battle is coming to you says Get Ready what does God promise in verse two exactly restore the Splendor of Jacob restore the Splendor of Israel this is similar to what he said in chapter one I think this is the last reference we have to Judah or Israel in this book but he says I prepare your defenses but no I’m going to restore I’m going to restore Israel’s splendor and then we have an image in verse three think of the details there that are given there what is the image we get first of all what is depicted got soldiers depicted right we’ve got military men but how would you describe their depiction their Mighty Men colored red dressed in Scarlet flashing Steel their Cypress Spears are brandished what kind of picture of soldiers is that yeah they look Splendid and mighty they look like a a glorious group but then look at the next image it’s also an image of soldiers but what is the sense in this image yeah soon yeah rushing chaos you see words like wildly they’re dashing to and fro they’re stumbling they’re hurrying because battle has come they’ve got a man in the walls they aren’t that Splendid looking Army that we see in verse three they’re a panicked army they are an army that is hurrying for the defense by the way if you’re wondering what a manslide is in verse 5 manslide is a portable barrier for Archers and infantry to use for cover when they’re besieging a city it’s kind of like a wall or a box that you can transport and you can’t be hit by arrows or projectiles anyways so we have these images The Defenders of Nineveh are called to ready themselves we see them doing so but let’s now look at verses 6 to 13.

the gates of the rivers are opened and the palace is dissolved it is fixed she is stripped she is carried away and her handmaids are moaning like the sound of doves beating on their breasts though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days now they are fleeing stop stop but no one turns back plunder the silver plunder the gold for there is no limit to the treasure well for every kind of desirable object she is emptied yes she is desolate and waste hearts are melting and knees knocking also anguishes in the whole body and all their faces are grown pale where’s the den of the Lions and the feeding place of the Young Lions where the lion lioness and lions cut Lions Cub proud with nothing to disturb them the lion tore enough for his Cubs killed enough for his lionesses and filled his lairs with prey and his dens with torn flesh behold I am against you declares the Lord of hosts I will burn up her chariots and smoke a sword will devour your Young Lions I will cut off your prey from the land and no longer will the voice of your Messengers be heard okay this section is dominated by two main images first image appears in verses six to ten it’s mentioned specifically in verse 6 to 8.

what is the image used to describe what will happen to Nineveh they’re going to be taken over but he’s using an image to describe something about that conquest yeah Roy there’s this water image if you go back to verse six it says the gates of the river are opened and the palace is dissolved and then in um verse 8 though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days now they are fleeing so there’s this image of Rushing Water uh of water suddenly being opened up and water fleeing now just as a dammed up River suddenly rushes and a pool of water bursts through a barrier this pool of water in Nineveh burst through a barrier what the metaphorically is going to depart Nineveh rapidly like Rushing Water in verses 6 to 10.

okay the things things that were met by the waters are carried away but he mentioned specifically some things being carried away as if by the water what’s being carried away yeah silver and gold um the the palace is stripped um plunder the silver plunder the gold there’s no limit to her treasure will from every kind or desirable object all the wealth is just carried away rapidly as if the water itself was carrying it out and what’s the state of Nineveh and verse 10 after this Rushing Water has gone through it’s ruined it’s desolate it’s empty it’s like you had this pool that was all nice and sealed in the city and then the barrier breaks it rushes through carries away everything people are saying stop stop they’re trying to hold it back but you can’t it’s water it’s just going to keep on rushing and all the wealth is carried away from the city it’s left empty it’s desolate now remember that Nineveh was quite a splendid City at this time it had been beautified with all the wealth obtained from the conquered peoples and the subjugated peoples and the tribute of Kings it was a glorious City but he says all that wealth it’s going to disappear like water carrying it away now there’s another image in the second half here of this section what image appears in verses 11 to 13.

it’s all about what creature the Lions right it’s the image of a lion’s den verse 11 asks where this Lion’s secure den and the hunting grounds are now if he’s asking that question what does that indicate has happened what happened to the lion stand in the hunting grounds they’re gone they’ve disappeared they’re no longer secure they’ve been devastated verse 12 describes how the lion formerly killed enough for his lionesses and his Cubs and his lair was filled with prey and with flesh with torn flesh but God says he is against you and again looking at the context that would be the lion he’s against the lion in verse 13.

and what does God promise to cut off from the you a couple things I will cut off I will burn up I will get rid of your prey you will no longer have prey what else I’ll get rid of your Messengers their voices will not be heard I’ll get rid of your chariots and I’ll get rid of the Young Lions your young lines will be cut off all right so let’s just interpret a little bit based on that line image what is this image of the line and the Lion’s Den describing regarding Assyria if God is asking Nineveh where’s the Lion’s Den and then he makes these promises regarding the lion what is he really saying about Assyria well who is the lion okay yeah that makes sense the Lion’s Den is the Syria or is Nineveh or you could say even to Syria so who’s the lion lion is Assyria and that makes sense right because the serious the dominant conquering Nation it’s been plundering it’s been attacking it’s been like a lion tearing prey tearing flesh bringing it back to the Cubs bring it back to the lionesses the families of Assyria the wives and children of Assyria he says that’s what you were but now your Lion’s Den is compromised now your hunting grounds have been cut off here’s what I’m going to do I am against you o Lion of Assyria I will destroy your military might your chariots I will destroy your Young Lions I’ll destroy your your young men who fight for you I’ll get rid of your Messengers and I’ll make us that you no longer have any prey so you can see how these two images of the passage are related right the lion that tore for itself obtained flesh for itself obtained wealth for itself if we’re not speaking metaphorically it’s going to lose it all the one who previously obtained greatness through conkos was now going to be desolated and conquered the Predator is Syria would now be hunted by the way I see the screens doing the flickering thing again I apologize about that we thought that it was fixed but I can always see it here this one doesn’t seem to flicker as much all right let’s move on to the Final Chapter I’ve seen some prophecies regarding Assyria let’s look at the last set of words that God has for Nineveh and Assyria so chapter three we’ll look at the the section from verses one to seven woe to the bloody City completely full of lies and pillage her prey never departs the noise of the whip the noise of the rattling of the wheel galloping horses and bounding chariots Horsemen charging swords flashing Spears gleaming many slain a mass of corpses and countless dead bodies they stumble over the dead bodies all because of the many harlet trees of the Harlot the Charming one the Mistress of sorceries who sells Nations by her Harlot trees and families by her sorceries behold I am against you declares the Lord of hosts I will lift up your skirts over your face and show to the Nations your nakedness and to the kingdoms your disgrace I will throw filth on you and make you vile and set you up as a spectacle and it will come about that all who see you will shrink from you and say Nineveh is devastated who will grieve for her where will I see comforters for you okay God pronounces woe on a bloody city that is full of lies and pillage and whose prey never departs what image is given in verses two to three what is described there yeah Roy well I don’t know if we want to say that just yet that this is the city of Nineveh or a city but certainly we have a picture of battle and what’s very noticeable about this battle I think you’re alluding to it Roy we have something mentioned here that was not mentioned before dead bodies right corpses this is a bloody battle that has resulted in the death of many there are so many corpses that people are stumbling over the Corpses now the reason for the preceding verses are a reason for the preceding verses is given in verse four what is the reason all this because because why now he says because of the harlotry but we’re not talking about physical hollow tree here we’re talking about a spiritual Harlot tree because we can see that he says the Mistress of sorceries who sells Nations by her harlotries we’re talking more than physical immorality here we’re talking about a spiritual immorality that affects Nations he says it is that that is um providing reason for what we see in the preceding verses and is this hollow tree and notice what God promises to bring about upon Nineveh as a result he continues to utilize the image of a harlot or a prostitute and says that he will lift up her skirts over her face and expose the vile disgrace and nakedness to all the nations who will in turn abandon her it will run from her there’ll be no one to comfort her it’s a pretty startling image of Shame and desolation now quick interpretive question is this image of battle and death in verses two to three a prophecy of what will happen to Nineveh in judgment or is this a depiction of what Nineveh has already done to the other nations I think that’s a difficult question to answer what are you going to say Ron right and I I do think that’s key to understanding this rob you point out that understanding who who the is that will relate to identifying what two versus two to three is talking about I think we can say with relative confidence that the adulteress or the ones adulteries all right I’m sorry the Harlot and verse four is Assyrian because again this this whole prophecy is against Nineveh and he says behold I am against you and and verse 7 it says Nineveh is devastated so we’re talking the the one whose whorings are apparent in verse 4 is Nineveh but there are two ways that we can take verses two to three and I’m not necessarily gonna totally settle that issue you could say that and I think maybe some of you are already thinking this this is a prophecy of what will happen to Assyria because of her rings because you are an idolatrous nation and you’ve been selling your spiritual adultery you’ve been influencing other nations with your spiritual adultery here’s what’s going to come upon you but you could also interpret it as well no it’s that idolatry that’s been motivating their Conquest their evil bloody conquests and this would fit with verse 1 where he says woe to the bloody City completely full of completely full of lies and pillage or prey never departs she’s always been doing this to people this is what she’s done to her prey because she thinks this is how she’s going to satisfy her gods or her gods are totally good with this I favor the latter interpretation but I’m not going to be too dogmatic about that certainly we know that God is indicting Nineveh in Assyria for their spiritual harlotry and for their bloodiness and there they are going to be judged because of that by the way as I mentioned in previous lessons Assyria is known infamously in history for its brutality for its cruelty archaeologists have discovered images of battle on the walls of the Palaces that used to be in Nineveh and these Engravings include depictions of enemy soldiers being impaled on Pikes and captives being flayed alive while their families watch this is a very brutal people or they’ve been very brutal as conquerors and certainly just conquering other peoples in the first places is an issue all right next section let’s look at verses 8 to 11.

God has promised to judge to shame to expose this nation but let’s see what he says next are you better than no Oman which was situated By the Waters of the Nile with water surrounding her whose Rampart was the sea whose wall consisted of the sea Ethiopia was her mind in Egypt too Without Limits put in lubem were among her helpers became an exile she went into captivity also her small children were dashed to pieces at the head of every street they cast lots of her Honorable Men and all her great men were bound with Fetters you too will become drunk you too will be hidden you two will search for a refuge from the enemy okay quick observations even if you don’t recognize the name noaman where must this city be this place be according to the details of this passage it’s got to be in Egypt because it mentions the Nile and it mentions Ethiopian mentions Egypt this is some place in Egypt actually no Oman was another name for the capital of Egypt thieves now recall Egypt had different capitals but this was the capital around this time recall that Assyria conquered Egypt which means they also conquered thieves thieves was devastated as were her people but notice the question from God in verse 8 are you better than Noah man what’s the expected answer no you’re not you’re not any better Thebes was well defended it was well positioned it had to see for part of its walls or it had water as part of its walls she was well supported she had many armies to protect her but she was brought down she was destroyed God says the same will happen to you Nineveh you are no better you will be plundered too you will go into captivity too you will have your children dashed to pieces you will have your great men taken as prisoners and slaves you’re not any better defended and you’re certainly not any better behaved all right one more section verses 12 to 19.

verse 12. all your fortifications are fig trees with a ripe fruit when shaken they fall into the eater’s mouth behold your people are women in your midst the gates of your land are open wide to your enemies fire consumes your gate bars draw for yourself water for The Siege strengthen your fortifications go into the clay and Shred the mortar take hold of the brick mold their fire will consume you the sword will cut you down it will consume you as the Locust does multiply yourself like the creeping Locust multiply yourself like the swarming Locust you have increased your Traders more than the stars of Heaven the creeping Locus strips and flies away pure Guardsmen are like the swarming Locust your Marshals are like the hordes of grasshoppers settling in the stone walls on a cold day the sun rises and they flee and the place where they are is not known your shepherds are sleeping O King of Assyria your Nobles are lying down your people are scattered on the mountains and no one to there is no relief for your breakdown your wound is incurable all who hear about you will clap their hands over you four on whom has not your evil past continually all right this is the last word from God in this prophecy verses 12 to 13 describe the state of nineveh’s defenses from God’s perspective Nineveh is like a fig tree with a ripe fruit when you shake the tree the figs just easily drop off they’re like a city defended by women no offense ladies but women were not trained to fight in those days nor were they known for being Valiant so to be defended by women was a very dangerous thing Nineveh is like a city with its Gates wide open in other words how secure is Nineveh it’s it’s completely vulnerable whatever their defenses look like to humanize from God’s perspective they are completely exposed it’s like their gates are wide open you just shake the walls a tiny bit and everything falls apart they’re like a fig tree with the figs just drop off so easily now what has gone Nineveh what does God come in in about to do in verses 14 to 15.

like I said earlier get ready for battle prepare your defenses build up that wall get your soldiers ready and yet what does God promise in verses 14 and 19.

you can get your defenses ready but it’s not gonna matter you’re still going to be destroyed in Syria and its people be destroyed this is another interesting image in verses 15 to 17 one of locusts and grasshoppers he says you multiply yourself um he says you’ve got you’ve got these grasshoppers what do these bugs represent it tells us specifically your Guardsmen are like locusts your Marshals are like the hordes or grasshoppers you can maybe say that the traders that they’ve increased are also like locusts but there’s a big problem being defended by locusts or being defended by Grasshoppers and it’s not that they’re small it could be squished but Lucas and grasshoppers are constantly on the move they get up and fly away at a moment’s notice it says your Defenders are like locusts that have settled in on the cool Stone the stone of the walls but as soon as the sun comes up they’ll all Fly Away they’ll disappear and you will be completely undefended your defenses will disappear in a Flash as no one will be able to find them notice the future state of Nineveh citizens in verse 18. both Shepherds and Nobles are lying down scattered with no one to regather them now this statement is made specifically to the king of Assyria if no one is around to re-gather the people to Rally to lead them what happened to the king the king is vulnerable and there’s a prediction made about the king if people if the people of Assyria will have no one to regather them what’s happened to the king he’s gone he’s either killed or captured remember God had said something similar to Israel after Saul after he prophesied that Saul would die he says I saw all Israel scattered with no one to lead them isn’t it she said the reason I saw that is because the king will die Saul evil die same thing here says the king is going to be killed or captured the people will be left leaderless verse 19 says finally there is no cure or relief for you all who hear about you will clap their hands over you that is they will rejoice they will applaud when they see what happens to you and notice the reason the end of verse 19. another rhetorical question for on whom has not your evil passed continually what’s the implied answer no one there is no one who has not experienced or evil there’s no one who has not felt your evil influence your continual evil influence that’s why this is all going to happen to you and that’s where the prophecy ends so let’s summarize what we’ve seen in chapter one we saw God’s Vengeance on evil and his great power described we saw that his power totally destroys the guilty but it defends those who seek God for Refuge we then saw how God’s character and power were going to manifest themselves specifically Destruction for Assyria but Deliverance for Judah and then in chapter two we saw God calling Nineveh to defend itself but the images then showed the images that came out which showed that the defense was pointless there would be no stopping the wealth escaping from Nineveh like a river nor is there a way to secure the Lion’s Den or the hunting grounds from being devastated in chapter 3 we saw the bloodiness and the spiritual holly tree of Nineveh highlighted and condemned God promises to expose and shame the spiritually immoral City God again called on the city to defend itself but again showed that there would be nothing that would stop the city from being overtaken and destroyed the evil Nineveh inflicted on all nations would receive recompense now let’s ask some interpretive questions okay God is not being serious when he tells Nineveh to defend itself how could we describe these commands of God yeah Craig and I think that there’s definitely a warning there but he also says that it’s going to be useless so if you’re commanding someone to do something that’s ultimately going to be useless what’s the sense um what kind of a feeling do you have in that command yeah I mean there’s there’s confidence there like get your defenses ready you’re not gonna be able to do anything but there’s also a kind of a sarcastic or an ironic quality to those commands I think maybe due to that confidence yeah get your defenses ready but you know know it’s going to be useless it’s a kind of an irony or a sarcasm to those commands total confidence in God and isn’t what he’s going to do yeah I’ve seen this whole book and and you saw the summary on the previous slide what are the main ideas or themes repeated in this book what’s one of them yeah God judges evil right he judges it completely totally and nothing can stop it what else God’s judgment is emphasized Danny something else yeah God’s power God is going to totally bring to pass his judgments he has the power to execute his vengeance what else well this idea of get your defenses ready yeah total sovereignty right his sovereignty is emphasized here we could point to some other things as well just to summarize some of them God judges sins the utter most he will eventually destroy and disgrace his enemies God protects vindicates and avenges those that fear him that call upon Him Judah you will be restored Israel Your Glory will be restored reversal the plunderer becomes the plundered the lion becomes the prey the proud is brought low we also see that planning or making preparation to fight against God or Escape his judgment is totally useless I feel like this is perhaps the strongest theme the most emphasized theme in this book if you want to remember the book of nahim if I could help you maybe with one phrase it’s simply this resistance is futile and God’s judgment comes your resistance is futile evil will never Escape God’s judgment and God is sovereignly going to bring that to pass now this Oracle is addressed to Assyria what then was nahim’s purpose in proclaiming this message of judgment to Assyria to Nineveh why give this word it’s a testament to God’s power for sure yes hmm well it is interesting that you mentioned that you say you notice that repentance definitely seems missing from this book if we go back to the Book of Jonah though you may remember that when Jonah declared his message to people Nineveh he didn’t say anything about repentance he just said you’re going to be judged you’re ready to be judged it’s interesting when you compare these two different books Jonah did not he was a half-hearted um Messenger to the people of Nineveh he didn’t want to go but when he went he declared you’re all going to be judged within a certain amount of time whole city is going to be destroyed they repented the king everyone in the city and then how did God react he relented of the judgment the same thing is possible here yeah Rob yeah the same thing as possible here this message of judgment is not simply to say look it’s coming upon you too bad this was to evoke repentance just like Jonah’s message was hang on a second Ron however from what you know from the rest of the scriptures or history how does Nineveh respond to this message yes Steve um knows the hearts of hearts but the Fortified by themselves of the people yeah that’s a that’s a that’s a good point that would this prophecy of judgment even though the previous prophecy of judgment brought about repentance and judgments are given to evoke repentance there’s a predictive quality to this prophecy about how Assyria is going to react and that’s similar to how the Prophecies of judgment against Israel were also right he tells Israel specifically you need to repent but he also predicts that that’s not what they’re going to do and of course the Judgment comes to pass and that’s what happens to Assyria Assyria does not repent Nineveh does not repent they do not respond to this message from nahim God knew that they weren’t going to respond just to give you the historical details in 627 BC within a few Decades of this prophecy a series of civil wars and rebellions broke out in the Assyrian Empire the Babylonian nabo palacer gained control of the area of Babylonia and later laid Siege to the city of Nineveh he conquered it in 612 BC with an assault that included intense house to house fighting there was even a report that a flood of the river was part of the reason that they were able to assault the city because the flood was so large that it damaged the defenses after Victory the Babylonians plundered the city and then raised it to the ground the city’s remaining inhabitants were massacred or deported and to this day Nineveh is a ruin of the city of mosul is not too far away now but philosopher with the help of the medes continue to dismantle the Assyrian Empire until finally NABA palace’s son Nebuchadnezzar II that is the members Nebuchadnezzar of the scriptures defeated the last Assyrian and Egyptian resistance at the Battle of church mission 605 BC Assyria was then officially no more therefore when we can see when Nineveh repented under Jonah that generation experienced merciful salvation but when Nineveh refused to repent in response to the message of nahim that generation experienced total and just destruction but perhaps the question still lingers in your mind how can this be how can God condemn and judges Syria for what it did to the other nations when God himself raised up Assyria and used Assyria to conquer those other nations and inflict the brutal judgment on them how can God do that well part of the answer this surely has to do with how Assyria went going about God’s ordained judgment Syria certainly did not give glory to God when it conquered these other peoples nor was it careful to obey God’s commands but you might say wasn’t that part of the judgment wasn’t there sinfulness and brutality part of the judgment on those other nations well there’s another part to the answer and it’s this God is just and though he ordains evil and uses evil to accomplish his purposes God is not himself evil nor does he cause anyone to commit evil God is very explicit about this in the scriptures therefore though God ordained a serious evil sinful brutality as a judgment on the other nations God was not responsible for that evil Assyria was responsible therefore God was just in bringing judgment onto Syria our minds May struggle with the tension of God’s sovereignty man’s responsibility but the Bible makes clear that God is always holy just and Sovereign responsibility for evil is never God’s so God did not violate his Justice by bringing this judgment or by pronouncing this judgment on Assyria we only have two minutes so let me briefly turn to our last topic which is application so what why should we care this that this judgment was revealed to Assyria through God’s prophet nahim and then when it was unheeded it came to pass we’re not Assyria after all well many of you already see the connection it’s similar to what we’ve seen in the last few lessons the same holy God who judged Nineveh for sin is the same God God who will judge all men for sin the New Testament describes the dangers that we too are under from God’s Wrath Romans 2 5 but because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of Wrath and the revelation of the righteous Judgment of God Hebrews 10 26-27 for if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth there no longer Remains the sacrifice for sins but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of fire which will consume the adversaries all of us will face the Judgment of God either when we die or when Christ comes back and all human preparations for this judgment like nine of us preparations will be useless you cannot keep yourself from dying you cannot buy your way out you cannot store up enough supposed good works or prayers to protect you or to save you you cannot hide behind your family or your church like Assyria you will be utterly exposed by God and the sinfulness of your heart will be put on display if your righteousness is anything less than God’s standard which is perfection you will be disowned by God and then thrown into the Lake of Fire forever there is no hiding from or escaping God’s judgment there is no defense his judgment will find you as God said God will never leave the Guiltless unpunished he’s too just and too holy for that so what hope is there for any of us well as we said it’s only in the Savior provided by God the only salvation the only rescue from God is the one that God provided because God himself said to name him one I am a strong tower to those who seek refuge in me he is the rock on which if a wise man builds when the storm and flood of God’s judgment comes the house stands firm and how can one make God his refuge and his Savior and do as Jesus and the prophets commanded repent of your sins turn back from your own way trust in Jesus righteousness alone follow after Jesus commit your whole life to no longer doing the will of your flesh but the will of God starting with baptism the only Escape from God’s judgment is the way that God provided Jesus this is God’s message to us this is the message that we need to take to the world some questions for you to meditate on as we close when God’s judgment comes will you be protected or will you be destroyed how do you know in what defense do you place your hope if it’s anything other than the righteous sacrifice of Christ on your behalf your hope is as useless as you as nineveh’s walls are you showing the fruits of repentance in your life putting off the patterns of sin and putting on the patterns of righteousness because these will show whether you truly believe in Jesus do you trust God to avenge evil so that you don’t have to seek your own vengeance and do you continually thank and praise God for rescuing you from the Judgment that you like Nineveh so plainly deserved that’s all for this week next week we take a step back and talk about the Bible’s prophecies in general lots of people make predictions today and some of them come true are the Bibles fulfilled prophecies really all that special well look take a look at that question next week let’s pray
