    God’s Way of Salvation

In this sermon, Pastor Joseph Babij looks at Israel’s experience with the bronze serpent in the wilderness and the analogy of that experience to Jesus Christ and salvation. Specifically, Pastor Babij considers four things sinners must see in order to look, be saved, and live:

    1. Your Condition (vv. 4-5)
    2. The Judgement Your Sin against God Brings (v. 6)
    3. Your Inability to Save Yourself (v. 6)
    4. God’s Remedy (vv. 7-9)

Good morning everyone, we are coming to you this morning in this unusual way but I guess after being in this for about eight or nine month and we are trying to navigate the waters as best as possible, and I know you are doing the same thing. I pray that you would grab your Bibles and look with me in the Old Testament in Numbers 21. Please turn there now.

We’re going to look in this passage about God’s way of salvation. It teaches those who don’t know the Lord the steps in becoming a believer. It is also a passage of Scripture that reveals how God sanctifies His people. The Lord will not let us go on in sin without stepping in and providing something to show us our sin and bring it to the surface. We can acknowledge it, turn from it, repent of it, and confess it to the Lord and continue on to walk in faith.

We see in our passage Israel’s journey from Sinai to the plains of Moab. It’s a lesson concerning sin and grace and is a story of repeated sin and resulting failure until the Lord in His grace caused the serpent to be lifted up which brought blessing and victory on the plains of Moab among the people. This passage is a signpost that reads this is the way of salvation if you will obey the Lord by looking to His remedy to save. In that way you will live, know forgiveness, and know life. If you don’t want to go the Lord’s way, you will die in your sin.

    Now look at Numbers 21:1-3:

When the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, then he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. So Israel made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.” The Lord heard the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites; then they utterly destroyed them and their cities. Thus the name of the place was called Hormah.

I read this passage in order to show you that the Lord heard the prayers offered up to Him by His people. He answered their request. Yet in the people’s hearts, there was rebellion against the Lord and their leaders. There was sin stewing in the hearts of the people for a long long time. Sin that was not acknowledged by the people, who acted as if their words and actions were justified. The people did not see their sinful condition nor the judgment that sin brings. Nor did they see their inability to deliver themselves from the consequences without God’s deliverance. Now this Lord’s day, I really would like you to take seriously and consider four things that sinners must see before they can be saved.

The first thing a sinner must see before they can look, be saved, and live, must see their condition. If you notice the condition of the people found in Numbers 21:4-5, it says this:

Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey. The people spoke against God and Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food.”

Now you see that the people here had to go around the land of Edom, which was a shortcut to the Promise Land. So they are at the end of the journey in the wilderness and they can pretty much think about the good food they are going to have or the good lands they are going to cultivate. They have this desire to want to be there already in the land flowing with milk and honey. The problem was they weren’t ready for the land because they still had sin in their hearts and still didn’t learn their lessons in the Old Testament. They had to go around Edom, because the King of Edom wouldn’t let them through.

They become impatient because of the journey, and they were tired. They were finding themselves so near the promised land but were not entering it. The route they were taking was the worst part of the desert because it was a harsh path. It presented the people with many unknown difficulties which only produced in the people’s hearts impatience. Simmering impatience in their hearts lashed out in a gross burst of murmuring and questioning Moses and God’s wisdom.

They really would rather have been in slavery with better food than to trust God’s goodness. they attributed evil intent to God and His leaders. This shows what is going on in their hearts. They question God in verse 5 asking why He brought them up to die in the wilderness. Murmuring is an outward sign of hypocrisy and unthankfulness in the heart. They question the wisdom of God and the proven goodness of the Lord.

The statement they relate back to Moses and to the Lord in verse 5 was one of disgust. They loathed the miserable food, the manna that came down from Heaven. They were sick of the honey wafer and it wasn’t what they craved and knew of in Egypt. They were looking back to Egypt and it’s like looking back to the world or the past life that you had before Christ.

Grumbling and murmuring were the surface sins. But the heart sin was unbelief. The Lord was very displeased with them and these accusations against Him that He provided them with no food or water is just simply untrue because God not only provided them with that all through their journey, but God made their shoes and clothing especially durable to not wear out.

God had shown His love by providing a way to be accepted – the sacrificial system- in the wilderness. By faith as evidenced by the blood sacrifice, they could be atoned for their sin and have them forgiven and covered for a year. Instead of thanking the Lord, they accuse Him of neglect. They ignore God’s law by telling lies and dishonoring His Name. So to see your sin and condition is the first step to looking, being saved, and to living.

When a sinner truly sees their condition before God, it means they realize they have broken God’s law and that they see sin as a terrible thing. It also means that they have sinned against their Creator. It is like taking up arms against the Almighty when we sin. The blindness of sin does’t allow us to see beyond this life and to see the hope they could have in Christ and the eternal life they could have with a good God who provides for our spiritual and eternal needs. Sin even blinds people to the consequences of breaking God’s law because they think that sin is not a big thing.

Now the New Testament informs us that this event that we see in Numbers warns present day Christians not to mimic the sins of the Old Testament which were grumbling and murmuring and showed their unbelief. If you turn to 1 Corinthians 10, it shows us that if you think this message was just for the people back then, you would be incorrect. The message in the Old Testament is just as relevant to us today as it was then, and even more so. It says this in 1 Corinthians 10:5-11:

Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness. Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.” Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

These Scriptures are for us today and teaches us that to break God’s laws has consequences. Just as trying to defy the law of gravity results in fractured bones and even death, the violation of God’s law brings about certain consequences.

Now look with me back at Numbers and notice the ramifications of violating the standards of God and the violations that come when we commit sins like grumbling. You may be in a circumstance right now that you are acting out and not satisfied where you are at and you wish you had something better. May you are posting about it on Facebook and complaining. But what you are doing before God is showing the sin in your heart that God will deal with. This is not only to bring someone to salvation but also to sanctify us.

Look at Numbers 21:6, which tells us what sinners must see so that we can look, be saved, and live. Until you see the judgment your sins against God brings, you will not look, be saved, and live. This is what the verse says:

The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

Now that seems very severe judgment upon the sin of grumbling but it was more than that because they were doing that for many years in the wilderness against Moses and God. Notice in our passage who sent the serpents among the people. The Lord Himself did it! This shows the measure the Lord will take to bring people to see the consequences of violating God’s law and the consequences of sin. God sent poisonous snakes among them in judgment. The desert areas in the middle east are well known for several types of poisonous vipers: the hornet viper and the carpet viper are the most dreaded in that area of the world. But the point is that these vipers produced a fiery sting to their bite which can be caused by venom, causing a burning sensation at the bite.

Of course that burning sensation of sin is a sting to us. The severe burning sensation caused by the venom fits here and has the most direct possible connection to the New Testament and this is most likely what the Apostle Paul referenced in 1 Corinthians 15 where he said in that resurrection chapter, “O death where is your victory, O death where is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law. So the consequences of the people sinning was death so to see that there are consequences to all you sin is the second step of looking of being saved and of living for God. This brings me to a third thing that all sinners must see before they can look, be saved, and live. This is until you see your inability to save yourself from your dreadful condition and God’s judgment, you will not look, be saved, and live. In Numbers 21:6 it says:

The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

The people will try to save themselves. The venom will be the cause of death and sin is what causes death and no one has the ability to rescue themselves from the consequences. In the very first book of the Bible, it says sin would lead to death. Physical sin is the separation of a man’s spirit from his body. Spiritually and relationally, it’s separation of man’s spirit from God and eternal death is separation of man’s spirit from God forever called in the book of Revelation the second death. The Word of God says all over the place that just as through one man sin came into the world and death through sin, so death spread to all men because all have sinned and the wages of sin is death.

So if you notice that the Scriptures tells us in Numbers 21:6 that not all the people die. The ones who do not die soberly really took into immediate consideration God’s only remedy to be delivered from the consequences from their personal sin. God always provides a way so sin can be forgiven and acknowledged. He always provides a way out. So you see that you cannot save yourself from the consequences of all your sin, which is the third step.

This leads me to a fourth thing, that all sinners must consider before look, be saved, and live. Until you look to God’s remedy that brings deliverance and restoration, you will not be saved and live. The first indication that a sinner is looking to God to be saved is repentance. Look at what it says in Numbers 21:7:

So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you; intercede with the Lord, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.

If you notice there what you see here is an acknowledgement of sin and also calling sin what it is: an offense to God and His work and the ministers who work on His behalf. So the purpose of God’s judgment is to bring about a change of mind and heart and a desire to turn from that sin and confess it to the Lord which pleases God. God wants to hear confession of our sins. That first indication is that we would repent which is a heartfelt sorrow for sin. It is a renouncing of it and a sincere commitment to forsake it and to walk in obedience to God. See we must genuinely renounce our sin and commit to forsake it in our lives. That’s what the people did here.

This does not mean that you have to first clean up your life before coming to receive God’s remedy. You can’t say you’re not ready to come because you have this or that going on in your life. When we turn to God for salvation from sin, one is really simultaneously turning from the sins they are asking God to save them from. In this case, it was grumbling, impatience, and hypocrisy and unbelief, not believing God would finish what He started. He promised all those forty years ago to bring them into the land.

God’s promises will definitely come to pass but we have to wait for His timing but the Israelites did not want to wait for it and wanted it now even though they still had sin in their hearts and were grumbling against God. Therefore, they had to repent of that first.

A second indication that a person comes to look to God’s remedy, is that they look to God’s intercessor for deliverance. Look at Numbers 21:7:

So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you; intercede with the Lord, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.

They had sinned so they asked God through Moses to deliver them. This meant that they needed to trust the way that God would deliver. So God was going to give the children of Israel the chance to express their faith in the Lord and take Him at His Word to follow His direction and His guidance. Today, you must ask God through Christ who is the Intercessor and Mediator to deliver you from your sins and consequences of condemnation. It says in 1 Timothy 2:5:

For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

You can’t take Jesus out of the equation. People talk about God in a generic way but you can’t go to the Father unless you go through the Son. In Acts it says we need repentance towards the Father and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s always the way it is, and you can’t just go to God the Father without the Mediator. In this case the mediator was Moses who was a type of Christ.

A third indication that one is looking to God for the remedy is to do so in faith. Moses was told to make a serpent in bronze that was elevated on a pole that might be seen by all corners of the camp. Any bitten Israelite had to just look to the serpent and be healed and saved from death and the consequences of their sins. It says in Numbers 21:8-9:

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live.” And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

Looking is synonymous with faith, not trusting in yourself or any system, but looking to Christ. To see that the only way to be saved is to look to Christ, God’s only remedy to save lost sinners is the fourth step to being saved and living. The scenario of unbelief may go something like this: “Moses the servant of God may be losing it. He is one of those holy prophets and is kind of crazy. If he thinks that looking at a bizarre snake on a pole is going to heal a venomous bite, then I don’t believe it. It goes against all conventional wisdom of medicine and science and is not logical.” Such a person would have died because of a snake bite but also because they did not believe God.

People tell me that they think the Bible is a fairy tale because the gospel sometimes sounds like one. And yet, the Word of God tells us in Numbers 21:9:

When he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

So when an Israelite was bitten, all he had to do was turn and look at the bronze serpent and be healed and live. So why is it that people hate, despite, and reject the gospel? Because it is so different in every way from what people would expect God to do. He does the exact opposite often of what we think He should be doing. People do not understand or like the way God works because it doesn’t conform to their religious systems.

This particular method of curing was designed for salvation to show that it was the efficacy of God’s power and grace, not the effect of nature or man that brought about the cure. Secondly, that it might be a type of the power of faith in God in Christ to heal all who look to Him because of their sin. That brings me to the passage of Scripture that was read this morning in the New Testament. In Numbers we have what we call a type, that shadows, forecasts, or represents beforehand something that will happen later on, which is called an antitype.

Types take different forms but the object was always to get the picture to people of what was going to happen in the future. God was preparing the children of Israel for the amazing deliverance that was going to be provided for those who looked when God sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world. So when people looked at the serpent lifted up on the pole, you get the view ahead of time of what the Lord would do.

The people were bitten because of their sins and were complaining and rebellious towards God. This serpent on a pole had a no power to heal, only God did. But when a person fixed their eyes on the serpent, they were restored to health. In the same way, the antitype who does have the power to give spiritual life to the one who looks and trusts is lifted up. So faith in God’s way of salvation is the way of looking to God.

When you come across a passage of Scripture in the New Testament which points to the fulfillment, the antitype is how we see Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. In the New Testament in John 3:14-15 it says:

As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.

Now here is this man Nicodemus is a teacher of Israel and he didn’t come to the place where he realized that all he had to do was look and he could be saved. If you notice in John 3, the conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus ends when Jesus says that the Son of Man must be lifted up, he immediately connected what Jesus said to the Old Testament Scriptures in Numbers and he knew right then that looking was faith. He believed in Jesus and became born again at that point.

So can you honestly say you have looked to Christ alone for eternal life or are you still looking to yourself or something or someone else? Maybe you’re still working on yourself and are trying to be good. I would like to ask you again today, has this wonderful person of Jesus Christ be born into your hearts today. It says in John 3:3:

Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Christ who says who will go in and not go into the Kingdom, has emphatically said to us that unless you have been born anew from above, you cannot enter. The invitation is to look to God for the remedy, repent of your sin of unbelief, and look to the Intercessor Jesus Christ for deliverance who is God’s only remedy for sinners. He was lifted up on the cross and died in the place of sinners, paying for sin and defeating it. Thus He satisfied God’s justice and defeated death and Satan. Then He rose from the dead so you can live.

So today is the day to look to Christ to be born again. Don’t wait til the end to say to yourself, which I’ve heard before, that you will wait to the point of death to believe. Don’t be so foolish that you can out maneuver the fox of death. It may be too late to hope for tomorrow, already in hell and sealed up forever.

See, death freezes you to be as you were on earth for all eternity. The grand question to ask and honestly answer is if you’re born again and lifted up on the cross for your sake? Are you looking to Jesus Christ? If you do that, you must admit you are a sinner under God’s just penalty and turn from your sin to Him for forgiveness.

You must understand your inability to save yourself because there is nothing you can do to earn or merit your salvation. You need to look and see that there is no other remedy but in Jesus Christ. Of course, then you need to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Ask Jesus to save you from sins’ condemnation. He is the only one that can do that and once you do that, then you need to follow Christ in loving obedience everyday.

The Israelites and often Christians have to learn that lesson in sanctification. We cannot continue in sin while following the Lord. A Biblical Christian is not one that just knows they are a sinner with a bad record and heart, that God’s provision for sins is in Christ and his cross, and that they must repent and look to Christ. Can you make the claim this morning to be a Christian that sticks to the Bible and does your life manifest the fruit of repentance and faith?

Do you possess a life of attachment, obedience, and confession of Christ on a regular basis? Is your behavior marked by adherence of the ways of the Lord and are you being conformed to the image of Christ and it shows in your life. We know it won’t be perfectly, but the evidence points that this is surely the direction of your life.

So I ask you again on this Lord’s Day, are you born again? Is Jesus born in your hearts today. I would urge you to humble yourself, acknowledge your sin and look at Jesus the Savior and invite Him to come and be born in you to cleanse, forgive, and transform you. I beg you to do that today.

If you know Christ, I pray that you would not let your sin go on and on and on, even regarding these sins of complaining in the heart. Because if you continue, it shows that you don’t really believe what God has for you in your life. I pray that you would look at your life in that way and as you do, that you would surely continue to walk with the Lord. If you don’t know Christ today, then confess today. Ask Christ to save you and turn from your sins today. Let us know if you have done that!

Let’s pray now. Oh God of our deliverance, I come before you this Lord’s day on behalf of your people lifting up praise for the bitter agony and the cruel death you willfully and patiently accomplish in the place of all who believe in You and turn from their sins and follow You. Thank You Lord Jesus for Your precious blood that was shed to wash away the sins of Your people. After Your payment for our debt that we could never have paid, You went to the grave which could never hold you. Your power burst the bands of death and trampled down the power of darkness triumphing over sin, Satan, and death. In doing that you lifted Your people out of their sin.

Thank You that today all the people who come to You can rejoice in the great fact that Christ is the way of salvation. Those Lord that are believers can also rejoice in the fact that when we do sin, You and the power of the cross is still available to us every single day and that as we come and confess it, You are still faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all our unrighteousness.

I pray that today as a congregation, we would continually give up praise and worship to You because of the great things You have done and even the things You have yet to do in our lives. Let us be sensitive to our spirit and sin so that each day we would grow more and more and bear more fruit in our Christian walks. We thank You Lord and for all that You have done and will do and I pray in Christ’s Name, Amen.

    God Prepares the Way

Answers Bible Curriculum 2nd Edition Unit 7 Lesson 63

This week in Sunday school, we start to see circumstances turn around for Israel as God prepares the way for the second generation to inherit the promised land. God causes Israel to vanquish two entire kingdoms on the eastern side of the Jordan River and then protects Israel from an attempted curse by turning that curse into a blessing. Why should Israel’s military victories have bolstered the people’s faith in God? What did the pronounced blessing reveal regarding a coming exalted king in Israel? And how should we be encouraged in seeing what God was doing for his people in those days? We consider these questions and more.

Our main text for this lesson is Numbers 21:21-24:25.

welcome to Sunday school we are continuing to look at God’s great purposes as they unfold through the history of the world as recorded in the Bible we’ve been moving through the Book of Numbers and by this point you might be despairing of Israel ever inheriting the Promised Land this is understandable I mean consider what we’ve seen lately the first generation of Israel rebelled against God refused to go into the land and all of them weren’t laid low in the wilderness they died and then we saw last time the second generation of Israel they also complained against God like the first generation when they didn’t find any water and at Meribah they even provoked Moses into momentary prideful exultation and rebellion against Yahweh so will such a stubborn people ever actually receive the promised land that God that God promised to Abraham into Abraham’s seed well it will turn out that the second generation is not as unbelieving as the first this second generation group it will stumble – and it will suffer God’s severe chastening but these Israelites will indeed inherit the land in fact we’re going to see today God prepare the way for their inheritance in a powerful fashion actually reading and preparing the teaching for this accounts of Scripture that one word just kept coming back to my mind and that word is unstoppable like a great machine that just blasts through every obstacle in front of it or some mighty warrior that cuts through every opponent Israel is about to proceed forward irresistible into and through the land of Canaan but this invincibility it will not be due to Israel’s power or craftiness or greatness it will be due to the power and greatness of their God Yahweh he promised to fight for them he said he would grant them victory in a sense he makes Israel unstoppable Israel is unstoppable because Israel’s God is unstoppable now for us today we do not face physical battles on the Lord’s behalf or at the Lord’s command but I trust it as we look at this account we will find encouragement for ourselves we do have spiritual battles and spiritual labors set before us by the Lord and we can become intimidated or afraid over those things but as we consider the power and faithfulness of God to Israel to bring the pathway you promised at them we shouldn’t find encouragement that God will also bring to pass what he’s promised to us now how did God prepare the way for Israel we’ll find out in just a moment first let’s pray our great God you are the unstoppable God no plan of yours no determination of yours can be thwarted we are so thrilled Lord that you are our God all your ways are good and you’ve you’ve chosen to show special mercy to us and Lord as we see your mercy on display to Israel I pray that the hearts of the people would indeed be encouraged and embolden to courageous obedience of you I pray that you’d help me to speak explain this well now in Jesus name Amen please take your Bibles and open to the Book of Numbers chapter 21 and verse 21 numbers 21 21 let me give you some context before we get to our main passage we’re left off in the Book of Numbers with Israel contending against God at Meribah in the wilderness south of Canaan so I’m get my little pointer out here so Israel has been around here for some time this is where they this is where we saw them the last chapter kind of this area now God is now going to bring the people into the land of Canaan but not in the most logical direction at least we would think of as the most logical direction God is not going to bring Israel straight up north indicated this is actually how they would have tried to entertain in the first time not gonna do that he’s gonna take them around the east side of Canaan on the other side of the Jordan and that’s going to be how the enter came now before they can go to the east and enter from that direction is Joel encounters some trouble along the way at the end of numbers 20 Israel sends messengers to eat him so Eden’s down over here kingdom southeast of Canaan they send messengers to eat him asking if they can pass through and memory eat him that’s another name for the descendants of Esau and God had actually divinely apportioned the land that Edom lives in to eat him it was it was there it was their gift Israel was forbidden from dispossessing Edom from that land so they say all right Edom we don’t want to fight you we just want to pass through we won’t use the king’s highway and what eating’s reply to this request big fat no they say there’s no way you’re coming in through here if you try we’re gonna fight you and this is a setback for Israel because not traveling through the land of Edom directly they would have just come right through here just a nice little pass right here it means that they were gonna have to take the long way they already have to turn south and go all all the way around to the mountain rage that defines Eden’s territory it was gonna be a lengthy detour to make matters worse at the beginning of numbers 21 we hear that some inhabitants in the south southern part of Canaan in the Negev they decide to attack Israel they raid Israel and they take some of the Israelites captive Israel sought vengeance against these people and rescue of the captives they vowed Yahweh that if he allowed them to destroy the Raiders or to overcome the Raiders they would destroy them all and destroy all their cities they say God if you’ll grant us victory we will do that God did grant them the victory and Israel did as they vowed they destroyed the Canaanite Raiders and destroyed their cities and despite this encouraging victory yes you’ll still had to take the long detour around the territory of Edom and it became an opportunity for complaint it complained again this time they complained against Moses specifically and all their hardships about all their hardships they were experiencing and as God’s keeping covenant with the people but even to judge and chasing them he sends fiery serpents among them the term fiery probably means venomous kind of feels like fire what it does to your body he sends venomous serpents among the people to bite them and people were dying seeing God’s chasing people repented they are they repented before God and before Moses and God commanded Moses to create a bronze serpent what’s up a bronze Serpent and he instructed the people God instructed people through Moses have the people really look to this bronze serpent and when they do if they’ve been bitten they will live of course Jesus is gonna make analogy with that in the New Testament about its own being lifted up on the cross but anyways there’s definitely been some trouble on the way on the way to Canaan not the best start for the second generation in terms of faith and believing in Yahweh but there are some signs of spiritual life by the time we reach numbers 21 21 Israel under Moses they’re still under Moses at this time Aaron has died on Mount hor Israel under Moses I successfully gone around Edom and also the territory of Moab and Ammon Ammon would be right over here mow up right here and there right on the border of the Arnon River and the territory of the Emirates now just quick reminder and moe-moe apt Ammon those were descendants of a lot their territories were also finally guaranteed by God God says I’m he’s the distance a lot is about to take them but the amorite s– God had not given that that same kind of promise Erik territory was not guaranteed so Israel is not yet next to Canaan getting close on the territory em rights let’s see what happens look at numbers 21 21 well we’re gonna read down to verse 32 it turned out my laser pointer okay there we go follow along with me as i read it says then is you’ll sent messengers to sigh huh king of the amorite saying let me pass through your land it will not turn off and if vineyard would not drink water from wells well go by the king’s highway until we pass through your book litter the scion would not permit as you’ll pass through his border so scion gathered all his people and went out against israel in the wilderness and came to J has fought against his initial struck him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon the Javik as far as the sun famine with a border the sons of a demon was chaser israel took all these cities and Israel lived in all the cities of the Emirates in heshbon and in all her villages her heshbon was the city of Sidon King at the impacts which fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his and as far as the Arnon therefore those who use proverbs say come to hedge fund let it be built so let the city of Sidon be established for fire went forth from heshbon a flame from the town of Saipan it devoured our of OS the dominant heights of the Art Walk to you oh man you are ruined o people of Qi mosh he has given his sons as fugitives and his daughters into captivity to amirite King Simon but we have cast them down heshbon is ruined as far as deepen then we have laid waste even to nofa which pitches to Madiba this issue lives in the land of the M writes Moses sent a spy up Jade sir and caps its villages and dispossessed the amp rights there all right we’re gonna stop here and let’s make observations we notice she was not looking to pick a fight with the MRIs verse 22 simply Israel simply asked to pass through the land safely on the Kings Highway after all their promised land was in Canaan on the other side of the Jordan not on the eastern side and the territory the em rights notice how Sion responds in verse 23 he refuses passage and he musters his army the Israelites the two sides do fight and what is the result according to verse 24 Israel prevails actually an I like the amorite and takes possession of their territory and this territory would have included you can see it on the map there on the left side of the screen everything between the Arnon Javik rivers on the eastern side of the Jordan on the eastern side of the Jordan of the name of that is Transjordan so they take all the territory they also took Zions capital city hash on along with another a number of other cities and villages these cities they didn’t burn they just took a notice the poetry in verses 27 to 30 also called proverb with this Israel note about scions previous relationship with Ammon and Moab / Cylons preach relationship these two neighboring kings alright well notice okay they were notice back in verse 29 he says he has given his sons as fugitives to an MRI king or his son says huges and his daughters in captivity to an ammonite Emmerich’s icon talking about moab you said you were giving fugitives you had to give over hostages and prisoners you were being subdued by Saha but what’s the contrast in verse 30 but we cast him down these neighboring kingdoms were under the domination of sion additional says we conquered silent we laid him to waste but it’s not just the memorise of sion that israel defeats let’s read on in verses 33 and 35 look over at those verses it says then they turned by the way of Bashan and AAG king of Bashan went out with all his people for a battle at edje but yahweh and it’s the Lord Yahweh said to Moses not fear him I’ve given him into your hand and all his people and his land and you shall do to him as you did to sigh how I’m king of the MRI to live at heshbon so she killed him ant son and all his people until there was no remnant left him they possessed his land okay Wow let’s make some more observations there’s 2 verse 33 Israel heads north toward Bashan that’s kind of purple area on the map on the screen this is the region of Transjordan on the east side of the Sea of Galilee this area was under control of another am i right King King ah he gathers his men to do battle with Israel at edrei notice though before the battle even begins telephone system Burke’s 34 that God was going to give the Israelites victory Oh POG and give them his lands got further commanded the people though to do tog and his people as had been done to Sion his people what was the result of the battle exactly as God and beside it was total victory for Israel according to verse 35 Israel obeyed God’s man droid AAG all his soldiers and all of his people they took possession of the land now we get a little bit more information about what happens with AAG and actually the book of Deuteronomy so take your Bibles and turn over there June around chapter 3 Deuteronomy is essentially a long exposition of the law the previous books and got it commanded for is built as the people about that the promised land and so Moses in Deuteronomy he recounts some of the history that they’ve already experienced and in Chapter three he’s counting these battles with sy ha and AAG notice in verses 4 to 11 though gets the more interesting information that we don’t hear in our passage and number 21 okay verse 4 mo who sets the people speaking of aughh we captured all his cities at that time there’s not a city that which city which we did not take from them 60 City all the region of our gob the kingdom of OGG and all these were cities fortified with high walls gates and bards besides the great many unknowns we utterly destroyed them as we did the psychic king of Heshbon utterly destroying the men were men and children of every city but all the animals and the spoil of the cities we took as our booty as we took the land at that time from the end of the two kings of the amorite s– who were beyond the Jordan from the valley of Arnon to Mount Hermon Sidonians call hermit Syrian and the Emirates call it San Diego all the cities of the plateau no Gilead Alba Shawn as far as the remnant of their effort as far as Selita and edy frame cities of the kingdom of Augie Michelin for only aughh king of Bashan was left of the remnant other SAE behold his bedstead was an iron bedstead it isn’t raba of the sons of animun it’s length was nine cubits and its width four cubits by ordinary cubed now this is interesting these other details here in verse four here in Deuteronomy Deuteronomy 3 it says the people took possession of six cities from off and notice how these cities are described it’s not just any old cities they’re strongly fortified high walls strong gates bars here in verse 6 or explicitly that all the people and men women and children under OGG were killed all their livestock and treasures were taken by Israel and then notice what we learn about OGG himself in verse 11 so C was the last of the wrath a he appears to be a line of giants large people mentioned in Genesis 14 and other describe other for the inhabitants of Canaan and the surrounding regions and certainly augggh fits that description because he has an iron bed that was not in cubits long my cubit is generally about 18 inches just take 9 divided by 1/2 and then add to 9 9 plus 4 point 5 this is a bed about thirteen point five feet he was about 18 inches so this bed would be a 13 point 5 long and why would a guy who meets that’s a large bed because he was a big guy how tall was ah if you’re back in those days and you’re trying to fight against uh how you even gonna get close to him his arms and his weapons are gonna strike you away before you can strike him yet here in Deuteronomy and in numbers it shall not only kill dog the giant but all of his soldiers and people just as God commanded with these basic observations let’s now ask some questions their interpretation why did Sion and our tack Israel but he did yes right perhaps perhaps fear they they would have heard of the successes Israel having you know their God having led them out of their land of Egypt and coming up in the successes that they had coming up through there and God having loved them and just being fearful that were they God behind them you know who knows what they could have done to them so perhaps there you know they decided strike first yeah that’s a good answer Roy likely there’s some fear involved they’ve heard perhaps stories of what God has done for Israel and bringing them out of Egypt and providing for them seho oh man we got it we gotta pose these people and remember Israel is not like some small band of travelers this is a horde of people that’s about to travel through amirite land and it would make sense for a king to say I don’t trust them I don’t trust this horde to go through my territory I mean that’s essentially what Edom said the amorite said I’m not gonna let them eros I Han said and hog essentially said now there may have been some over estimation of their own ability Sion appeared to be a great king he has subdued Moab and Ammon though he said take down these upstart Israelites maybe I can enslave some of them maybe an overinflated view of his own power but ultimately whatever reason Sion had to refuse passage we know ultimately this was the sovereign hand of God he had Cylons heart in his hand he said you’re going out to battle against Israel because I’m gonna cast you down what is the significance of Israel completely defeating Sion as I said Simon was a great king he had subdued his neighbors it was exalted to a certain extent the digital says look we took him down we were able to overcome him and we can ask a similar question when it comes to aughh what’s so significant about defeating aughh and taking the territory of OGG yes deep and I think I remember like throughout the songs you hear about that defeating Sion and and it’s just it’s just such a significant time in in Israel that they defeated these great things and gods and had worked for Israel and it’s like I said it’s a really significant memorial at this time yeah you’re right Steve to mention that later on there’s gonna be references throughout the Old Testament to these victories against I Han and odds Sion was a great king aughh go ahead I see Roya your hand is up again the first thing in the Bible has a sense of pride I guess the sin that is foremost in our hearts that we disobey God because of pride in our own way but going back to the idea of that is that though these Kings would perhaps think to themselves in addition to things fearful that you know these these Israelites are being led by their God if we can defeat them I mean we will you know will reign supreme over all and will be seen higher you know above we can put ourselves above all of the other peoples around us so let’s take the opportunity to go ahead and do that yeah he’s looking to exalt themselves I think that’s consistent with that Dwayne I see your hand I think they were about to come into the land oh really trust God they can go in and and take any kind of city or any yeah I think you’re exactly right Dwayne it’s not insignificant that they take down these great Kings Kings who mind you fit some of the fearful descriptions that their spies had originally brought back about the inhabitants of Canaan itself remember they said the people there are giants their cities are well fortified and strong with all these high walls and gates and bars but look what Israel just did they took down some people who were great kings some of them even Giants and they took all their fortified cities and so it’s exactly as Wayne was saying this should have been a encouragement to Israel that they can trust their God God will indeed give them the land of Canaan he will bring them victory even over the giants and even over the fortified cities of Canaan because look he’s already doing it on the eastern side of the Jordan yeah they were subdued by these people those people out that were oppressing but yeah Israel is in a sense freeing moab and ammon from the oppression of the Amer Heights we’re gonna see in the next chapter that Moab is not exactly grateful they’re actually really scared but that does make me think and in a certainly distant way but an all encompassing way what is the promise given to Abraham and you all the families of the earth will be blessed so when God does great things for Israel when the other nations get on board with it they be blessed too and really there is a form of blessing even coming to Moab and Ammon years so I was interesting observation let me ask another question oh I see that I had my water a little bit different but why was this your so successful in these battles it should be obvious by now right it wasn’t due to Israel’s cunning martial skill expert strategy it’s because of their God God is the one who said I’m giving you Oggy into your hand it was God who was fighting for them in giving them the victory maybe one other question we wonder about why did God command I elation of all the amorite s– in men women and children isn’t that genocide why did God command this God did not want their pagan influence later on but the Israelites to get caught up in that we’re going to see that they did exactly that okay so part of the answer is practical and God we even say this explicitly in another section of the Torah he says you must destroy the people of the land or else they will drag you away they will entice you to go after their gods they will corrupt you but that’s not the only reason more fundamentally this is an act of judgment from God remember even going back to Abraham when he has that covenant ratification ceremony in Genesis 15 God tells Abraham what’s going to happen in the future he says your people going to be in bondage for a long time I’ll bring them out with great possessions but this isn’t going to happen yet because the iniquity of the amorite is not yet complete and the amorite of the peoples in specific reference here but M writes is just another is one of the terms for the Canaanite people of the land these were a wicked evil and utterly corrupt people living in the land and God says I’m giving them time judgment is being laid up against them and when you come you will be my agents of judgment so remember Israel is not some sort of special people that can commit genocide just because they want to know they’re just following God’s command here as special agents of judgment we don’t look at what Israel did and try and mimic that today this was a special case and we’ll talk more about this later on when we talked about the actual conquest of Canaan but we we see some of the evil practices of the people to land actually in the Torah because a lot of times God says don’t do this don’t do that don’t sacrifice your children to Molech why because this is what the people the land do and I’m judging them and I don’t want to judge you too so this is an act of judgment though it is also an act of mercy on behalf of God to Israel these two purposes are being fulfilled at the same time God is bringing judgment on the on a wicked people and he’s bringing blessing to his holy people I see some hands I do need to move because I want to make sure we can get through all the different things you have today but hang on to your questions maybe we can come back to them at the end now as I said if you’re a neighboring kingdom like Moab or Ammon and you’re seeing these things happen to the amorite who were kind of the big dogs on the block big kids on the block of the the big dogs what’s your reaction to all this you’re probably pretty scared this is what we see exactly in numbers 22 you can head back to the book of numbers numbers 22 just glance at the beginning of that chapter we see the king of Moab Balak Balak gets together with his leaders and the leaders of a neighboring nation Midian the Midianites were descendants of Abraham via his second wife cateura this is a first after Sarah had died leaders of Moab and the leaders of the Midianites along with Bale at king of Moab they get together take some counsel how are we gonna stop the Israelites they’re too strong for us what they decide is alright let’s get some profit let’s get some powerful soothsayer to curse them so it might be able to withstand them can’t handle them militarily right now but maybe if we curse them then we can take them down and their top choice for a person candidate is Balaam balaam the son of a who seemed to be a great prophet and seemed to have some relationship with Yahweh himself God of Israel so King Balak sends the designation delegation to Balaam to come and curse Israel but after this delegation of wives Balaam consults with Yahweh God tells him not to go so Balaam refused it fail X invitation King Balak is not ready to give up he sends a more prestigious group of men to Balaam and he promises an even greater reward to Balaam treasure money etc if Balaam comes and gives the curse Balaam besides he’s gonna ask God again whether Balaam can go God says alright you can go but you’re only to say what I command you will know AB be successful in trying to curse Israel let’s read what happens with Balaam in verses 22 to 31 and numbers 22 now some of this story maybe Larry with Mary was somewhat famous but pay close attention to verse 22 it says but God was angry because he Balaam was going in the angel of Yahweh took his stand in the way as adversary against now he was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him and the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way his drawn sword in his hand the donkey turned off from the way and went into the field Balaam struck the donkey turned her back into the way and the angel of Yahweh stood in a narrow path of the vineyards a wall on this side and a wall on that side and the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh she pressed herself to the wall and pressed Balaam stood against the wall though he struck her again angel of Yahweh went further and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn in to the right or the left when the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh she lay down under Balaam so Balaam was angry and struck the donkey with his stick and Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey and she said to Balaam what have I done to you that you struck me these three times then Balaam said to the donkey because you have made up mockery of me if there had been a sword in my hand I would have killed you by now but donkey said to Balaam am I not your donkey on which you have ridden all your life to this day have I ever been accustomed to do so to you and he said no then Yahweh opened the eyes of Balaam and he saw the angel always standing in the way with his drawn sword in his hand and he bowed all the way to the ground the angel yahweh said to him why have you struck your dog to you these three times behold I have come out as an adversary because your way was contrary to me but the donkey saw me it turned aside from me these three times if she had not turned aside for me I would surely have killed you just and let her live Balaam says the angel of Yahweh I have sinned I did not know that you were standing in the way against me now then if it is just pleasing to you I will turn back but the angel be always said to Balaam go with the men but you shall speak only the word which I tell you so Balaam went along with the leaders of a lakh just such an interesting interesting account interesting occurrence here makes motivation there’s in verse 22 we’re told that God was angry that Balaam went to meet with bailout might be saying yourself wait a second didn’t God just tell him to do this he just looked back to you verses he says just that so why is God angry hmm it must be some reason for this apparent discrepancy notice how Balaam’s donkey behaves on on the way on the journey three times she stops or changes her path we’re told why because the donkey sees the angel of Yahweh holding a sword in the way how does Balaam respond to his donkeys inexplicable behavior heaps in frustration and he doesn’t see the angel nor does he know why his donkeys turning aside notice in verse 28 the donkey actually speaks to Balaam and notice how verse 28 says that God specifically opened the donkey’s mouth gave the ability for the donkey to speak now if your pet suddenly started talking to you how would you react maybe some wonder some fear some excitement Balaam doesn’t seem fazed it’s just interesting notice what the donkey says it doesn’t say exactly what you’d expect docu doesn’t say stop hitting me there’s an angel in the way don’t you know doc doesn’t say that instead she says what have I done to make strike me and then have I ever acted in a strange or rebellious way like this before I’ve been your donkey for a long time is this normal for me notice Palin’s response to his donkey he says the reason I’m striking you is because you’re making me look foolish memory he’s travelling with great dignitaries of bail act himself and then he also says that he’s so angry with his donkey that he would have killed her if he had a sword but he also admits you’ve never acted like this before then I always open the eyes to bei limit notice how he reacts to seeing the angel of Yahweh Balaam vows falls on his face and eventually he confesses his sin offers to turn back it was in verse 32 angel of Yahweh in explaining what people is doing he says he came out against Balaam because your way was contrary to me verse 35 whoever angel says to Balaam continued you shall speak only the which I tell you you I’m still telling you go with Balaam but say only the word that I tell you now interesting angel says say the word that I tell you but in verse 20 who said the same thing God did let’s ask a few more questions in return petition now who is the angel of Yahweh as we already see in the passage angel is saying the same thing doing the things that are God’s prerogative likely this is the son of God before his incarnation but the angel of Yahweh is Yahweh here’s a question what’s being emphasized here about Balaam he’s this great prophet even a prophet of public but he’s not able to see the angel of Yahweh at first though his donkey can nor is he able to discern the significance of a sudden change of behavior in his donkey what is this emphasizing to us about Balaam seems to be lacking something what does Balaam lacking again yeah he’s very spiritually aware I mean you’re a prophet of Yahweh and you can’t even see his angel you’re some great spiritual man and you can’t recognize when your donkey is acting in some way that indicates something spiritually significant is happening Balaam is shown to be someone who lacks spiritual insight and he’s supposed to be this great prophet this goes along with our second or the next question why was God angry enough to kill Balaam so certainly there’s something off in Balaam and in Balaam’s heart and we get a little hint of it from the context in the previous in the previous section there is the mentioning of grapes to Balaam if you will come to Balak and successfully cursed Israel so when God says your way is not right this could be pointing to a greedy motive in Balaam that would be that Balaam is hoping for a material reward he really does want to curse Israel he’s not super interested in doing God’s will and he’ll not do God’s will pick up this this interpretation would fit well what we see about Balaam later on because after Balaam leaves the narrative in numbers 24 he leaves bay lacks presence he goes home right after that the bull bytes in the Midianites we’ve just been conspiring against Asheville they ensnare is your via idolatrous revelry and immorality this is numbers 25 now their God is angry with Israel he severely Chasen’s Israel for their covenant Treasury but in numbers 31 we hear about how God brought vengeance against the people of Midian and part of the report in numbers 31 verse 8 is this they killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain IV and recommends or and and Reba the five kings of Midian they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword well it’ll kill Balaam is probably even a prophet of Yahweh as part of divinely ordained vengeance and then the number is 31 16 just a little bit further Moses rebukes the people for sparing the women of Midian by saying numbers 31 16 behold these caused the sons of Israel through the counsel of Balaam the trespass against God way in a matter of peor so the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh now that’s an interesting statement Moses says or rather God says Moses reports that Balaam was the one who gave counsel the Midianites shouldn’t sneer Yisrael via idolatrous morality so we can see Balaam certainly a prophet of his way it’s not right in fact as we go through the rest the Old Testament and especially the New Testament Balaam is the poster child of the corrupt mayn’t God the corrupt false teacher a false prophet in fact just to give you a reference Peter in the book of 2nd Peter he compares the false teachers of his time to Balaam by saying 2nd Peter to 15 of 16 forsaking the right way they have gone astray having followed the way Balaam the son of Beor who loved the wages of unrighteousness but he received a rebuke for his up transgression for you donkey speaking with a voice of a man restrained the madness of the Prophet jude 1:11 revelation 2:14 speaks similarly of Balaam and false teachers New Testament times so certainly the rest of Scripture is gonna make clear that Balaam is he’s a man who is corrupt but we’re already seeing hints of that numbers 22 the pastors we just read he was a man who was ultimately greedy not above giving counsel about indulging in idolatry morality that makes us maybe ask this question there’s God sparing a baylin’s life show us about God is a man is really struct out God doesn’t do it shows us that God is merciful God’s give an opportunity even for Balaam to repent also shows us God is in control Balaam I could have taken you out I didn’t but I wouldn’t let you know I had the power and I the willingness to do so despite all this God still chooses to speak through this problem says I want to go with these men speak only what I tell you why and what will Balaam declare on behalf of pot let’s look a little further look at numbers 22 verse 36 and we’ll read to chapter 23 verse 12 number 22 verse 36 they like heard that Balaam was coming he went out to meet him at the city of Moab which is on the our nut border at extreme end of the border and Balak said to Balaam and not urgently send to you to call you why did you not come to me I really unable to honor you so Balaam said to Balak behold I’ve come now to you am I able to speak anything at all where’d that God puts in my mouth that I shall speak and Balaam went with Balak and it came too curious closed-off balak sacrificed oxen and sheep and sent some to Balaam and the leaders were with him and it came about in the morning that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of bail and from there a portion of the people named Balaam said lack build seven altars from here and prepare seven bowls and seven Rams from here Balak did just as Balaam had spoken and Balak and Balaam offered a bowl and upon each altar that Balaam said to Balak stand beside your burnt offering and I will go perhaps Yahweh will come to eat me whatever he shows me I will tell you so he went to a bare Hill now God met Bailey and he said to him I’ve set up the seven altars now I’ve offered to the bowl and a ram on each altar and Yahweh put a word in Bale in his mouth and said returned a lakh and shall speak thus so he returned to him behold he was standing beside his burnt offering in all the leaders in BO AB took up his discourse instead from arum Balak has brought me Oh ABS King from the mountains at the east come curse Jacob for me I’m denounced Israel how shall I cursed whom God has not cursed and how can I denounce whom Yahweh has not denounced as I see him from the top of the rocks and I look at him from the hills behold a people who dwells apart and will not be reckoned among the nations who can count dust of Jacob a number the fourth part of Israel let me die the death the upright let my end be like his then Balak said to Balaam what have you done to me I took you to curse my enemies but behold you have actually blessed them replied must I not be careful to speak what da Wei puts it in my mouth this is pretty amazing let’s make some observations just on this Balak once Balaam to curse Israel but notice baihe Balaam says multiple times I can only speak with God health fetus and verse 5 of chapter 23 God gives the exact word for Balaam to speak and we hear it in verses 7 to 10 Balaam proclaims essentially it is impossible to curse it feel and he pronounces a blessing on Israel instead and this by the way this issue of blessing and curse does it remind you of anything that we’ve seen before certain promise maybe blessing God says who curse you I will curse and those who bless you I will bless and fear not to just speak to Abraham but even to Abraham’s seed we’ll see actually we won’t see won’t read it together but then Balaam later Oracle’s he actually says the same words about Israel those who curse you will be cursed and there was who bless you will be blessed so I can’t curse these people they’ve been blessed by God verse 11 Balak is not a happy camper at this blessing instead of cursing now we don’t have time to read the set the account them alone but just a surprise a little bit of what we see at numbers 23 and 24 Balak tries to get them to Kirks israel again he figures all right maybe this location didn’t work out for you and y’all way let me try and bring you to another one maybe Yahweh would be pleased to curse these people from over there that’s kind of a funny bit of logic but that’s what be a prize each time though they go to a new location they offer all the animals Balaam Balaam it’s a blessing instead of a curse being instructed by the word of Yahweh and even being filled with the spirit of Yahweh he blesses the people he does not curse them and he even gives prophetic Oracle’s from Yahweh he proclaims that the fairy power of God supports Israel Balaam also says God will establish jaws chief among the nations even a mighty and exalted King company come forth from Israel and subdue Israel’s neighbors and on that subject I do want you to look at a few of the verses together with me look at number 24 verse 24 verse 7 one of this seven speaking a video water will flow from his buckets and his seed will be by many waters and his King shall be higher than a gag and his kingdom shall be exalted I found it numbers 24:17 just went for 1719 more about this game you know it says I see him now I hold him but not near a star shall come forth from Jacob a scepter shall rise from Israel and shall crush through the forehead of Moab and tear down all the sons of Chef Edom shall be a possession zaire its enemies also will be a possession while Israel performs diet li1 from Jacob shall have dominion and will destroy the remnant from the city these prophesies about a king do remind you of any other prophecy as we’ve seen recently his son the seed of Judah and he said there will rise a king from Judah and he will have the Dominion of the peoples a scepter shall rocked in Judah seeing a very similar statement being made here horse does Israel have a king at this time it doesn’t Moses but he’s not a king Yahweh is their king but they don’t have a human King it’s only around 1406 when Balaam utters this pops 14:06 BC Israel would not have his first king for almost another 400 years yet these prophecies are being made and then these words about a king we see that here in numbers Yahweh is not only preparing the people to inherit the land but he’s preparing something much greater he’s preparing for the coming of insulted and mighty king in the end at the end of numbers 24 Balak gives up in frustration the people of God cannot be cursed a blessing of God on Abraham and his chosen descendants will not be contradict so with this let’s ask a few more questions from interpretation why does God choose to speak blessings even prophesy to the mouth of a corrupt though he does do this God does choose to speak divine through through unholy vessels at times here’s example King saw when he’s sinfully pursuing david many times he’s shooting david saul is made to prophesy against Saul’s with oh my god it’s like he loses control and he just has to prophesy Saul wasn’t a righteous King yeah that happened to Saul where there was a man of God and Jeroboam the first time this is in the divided Kingdom period he confronts Jeroboam here approves Jeroboam he gives a prophecy but then there was this other prophet a lying prophet who said something false to this first prophet made that man of God violate God’s command and then God spoke that lying prophet to say hey man of God you transgressed God’s command and now God is going to put you to death so God spoke even to a lying prophet and then of course more famously in the New Testament is chief priest he declares a New Testament says not on his own initiative it is better for a man to die for the whole nation of Herod you didn’t realize he was actually speaking full truth from hot and we can maybe even add that said the demons testify throughout the New Testament they say he’s the Christ this man this apostle he’s from the Son of God represents God certainly God is able throughout the scripture to cause even unfaithful prophets enemies of God to clear what is true so what does that show us about cotton if God can make even his enemies declare the truth what’s that show us about God he’s totally in control if he wanted to at any time he could make even the greatest rebels against God declare what is true they may have been other soothsayers in ancient times or who prophesy is false against Israel but here God wants to make a point with Balaam according to his own wisdom and according to his own reasons he’s decides to highlight this one particularly prominent prophet in Moses day and show that look I am totally in control of what he says he can’t curse unless I let him and he will bless because I’ve determined that he do so and if God can stuck stops one and this great prophets even attempting to curse Israel and force a blessing instead surely God is in control surely God’s power cannot be overcome and that means visual heads indicate God will bring his prophecies to pass God fight his people you protect his people and he will bless his people according to what he has proposed God makes this point finally clear and by used Balaam but who is the promised king of offices without reference to a gag some may suggest that Balaam speak from Saul David because we do read about in a gag in 1st Samuel 15 Saul actually defeats the captors king of the Amalekites apparently was a great king in Saul’s day also David and Solomon they did subdue Moab and Edom for a time during the reigns that corresponds with the other prophecy given by Balaam but the domination of Saul David and Solomon were pretty temporary they were indeed mighty king but there might quickly fell away Edith rebelled against Solomon during Solomon’s kingship so are these words really about those first few Kings Israel I’m more inclined to believe that the true fulfillment of prophecy is of a different a greater stronger more exalting Messiah who will who came but who will come again and establish his exalted kingship will reign in Israel and he will possess the nation’s but in a special way not merely as subdued rebels but as Amos 9 says as the people called by God’s than Berrien Edom even and the other traditional enemies visual they will one day be called by God’s name when Messiah establishes his kingdom but you can see here it numbers 22 and 24 God is certainly pairing the way not just in short term but in the long term God’s plants they’ve been established before the foundation of the earth they will come to pass because Yahweh is the sovereign to use the unstoppable God so how should that affect us how should we be change transformed affected by The Trews we read today let me suggest a few avenues of application and I think you can see these really all relate to each other reading this passage in these things Valhalla caused us to believe the promises of God Romans 8 says that God is for us who can be against us is God not for us God’s purposes for Israel could not be stopped God is purposes for us too for those of us who were in Jesus Christ God’s purposes for us will not be thwarted his promises will come to pass he will provide for our needs in the right way in the right time it will help us to endure hardship and temptation when we call upon him he will use us to make disciples and to build up his disciples when we speak of the Lord he will ultimately bring us safely into his heavenly kingdom to be with him and to experience his reward these things will come to pass so let’s believe them let’s have faith in our God along with that that means you should rest in this poverty you don’t have to see how something will work out to know that it will because Yahweh’s unstoppable God’s promises cannot be contradicted but let us stop being anxious we’re demanding in our hearts that we need to see how God will provide before we will trust him we can rest in our own stop a bullet but not just rest should act boldly in obedience because of our God seeing their God is unstoppable in his purposes and in his promises it surely urged Israel that they would be unstoppable in conquering the land as they were obedient to the Lord I’m gonna see that come pass one of the excitation is that God and you people of Israel will make to their leader to Joshua is be strong and courageous why be strong and courageous it’s Yahweh’s with you and y’all way fights for you we too should be strong and courageous in the Lord we should boldly minister the gospel for his sake expectant that God’s good purposes will come to pass through us I just not embrace that possibility so God could never amuse me I’m so weak I could never do anything you are weak but your God is strong and he’s made certain promises that will come to pass even through you as the great missionary to India William Carey said and I’ve shared this before it’s a good word William Carey said expect great things of God attempt great things for God you never know what Yahweh might accomplish through your own simple faith obedience is promised you this let us be strong and courageous for the Lord stick and let the Lord do what seems best in questions or comments from what you’ve heard today yes really God and the we were talking about God allowing the destruction of certain people’s and why he did that and so forth and one of the things that occurred to me I was reminded a statement later on that Rahab made when when the spies visited Jericho but I was thinking that God chose in allowing certain people’s to be destroyed he also allowed other people to be showed that he was a God of judgment as you said he showed that he was a to some others he showed he was a God of mercy and through others he showed that he was he was sovereign may have made enough a really amazing statement I thought it was very pretty too because she pointed out the kings that we actually discussed in our study today but when when she spoke with the spies she made an amazing statement that gave an insight into what was going on in the minds of those people at that time we don’t often get a picture of what she said was this to the spies she said I know that the Lord has given you the land that the terror of you has fallen on us and that all of the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you where we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came up out of Egypt and what you did to the two kings of the amorite SAR beyond the Jordan see mommy and do paw and you early destroyed when we heard of it our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because it for the Lord your God He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath that is an amazing statement because it gives the even the pagan people’s an opportunity to see the sovereignty of God and allows them the opportunity to actually repent counting more Israel and seek to get to know who their God is and it shows God’s mercy in doing something like that and yet most of them rejected that’s really useful Thank You Roy mentioning the words of Rahab later on testifying that the people they knew about Yahweh and what you always had done for Israel not only in Egypt but also in giving him victory Israel victory over Sihon and OGG and that’s a good point too that it’s not as if none of the people of the land had an opportunity to repent because we see that Yahweh will spare Rahab and her family because they helped Israel they didn’t continue along with the people of the land and most the people and were not willing to change sides like that and of course we’ll see as we talked about even next week Rahab will be in the line of Messiah so even even as God brings terrible judgment just judgment on the wicked people of the land he was as you were saying Roy testifying about himself to the people to land even so that they would repent that’s good if you have other questions or ideas that came to your mind based on today’s lesson please feel free to email me share this with me I enjoy those and I’ll try and answer your questions as best I can but that’s it for today next week we see the change in leadership in Israel Moses his time is finished and a new leader will take them into the land Joshua before they do that you’re gonna spy out that first obstacle that first great obstacle to obtaining the land of Canaan the city of Jericho I’ll talk about that next time it’s closing prayer Heavenly Father we see what your word declares and that is you are the strong powerful unstoppable God your purposes cannot be contradicted you will bless your people you will bring your promises to pass for them and God we are your people and you have made promises to us precious magnificent promises God yes is talked about in second Peter chapter one and it is by them God that we have everything that we need for life and godliness so God help us to be strong and courageous it’s a fight against sin to proclaim your liberating gospel to warn those who continue to rebel against you lord help us to be strong and courageous not because we are strong but because you were strong and you have promised you a purpose Lord that you would use us so use us indeed use us to build up your church use us to bring more sheep into your fold in Jesus name Amen thank you all jörgen soon

  • God Judges Rebellion

    God Judges Rebellion

Answers Bible Curriculum 2nd Edition Unit 7 Lesson 62

This week in Sunday school, we join Israel in their wilderness wandering to see what they’ve learned after missing out on entering the promised land. Surely this people, chastened for their unbelief, will have finally humbled themselves before God…right? Shockingly, we’re going to see through Korah’s rebellion and its aftermath that the people are still exalting themselves against God. Even Moses, Aaron, and the next generation of Israel stumble into arrogant rebellion. How does God respond to these acts of pride? And what can we learn from these accounts so that we might live humbly before God?

Our main texts for this lesson are Numbers 16:1-50 and 20:1-13.

Oh, great. All right. Well, let’s get started. Welcome to Sunday school. Good to see Good to see you. We’re continuing through the Torah, a important first five books of the Bible that in many ways lay a foundation for the rest of what we see in the scriptures. Last time we had moved on from the book of Exodus and we’re looking at Israel’s experience in the book of Numbers. We look at Numbers 13 and 14. And there we witnessed Israel’s failure to enter into God’s good land, God’s promised land, due to their own fear and unbelief. They missed out because they would not believe the Lord. Well, now we begin to find out if Israel’s learned anything from their failures, especially that great failure. Having those 10 times of testing by the Lord and failing before the Lord, but then experiencing God’s grace and limited judgments, not what they deserved, limited judgments. Has it produced a new heart of humility, of faith, and dependence in the people of Israel?

Well, we’re going to find out a little bit today as we look at a few notable events during Israel’s wilderness wandering. What we’re going to see, amazingly, is that Israel’s heart is as a people, it is still proud. It is still hard against the Lord. We’re also going to see that even Moses and Aaron and the second generation of Israel, they too are going to slip into prideful rebellion and unbelief against the Lord, even their leaders.

How’s God going to respond to this? And what are we to learn from it? We can see part of the answer given away in today’s title of the lesson that is God judges rebellion.

Now, by the end of this lesson, I pray that God will have confronted your own heart about whether it is prideful against the Lord, whether it is rebellious against the Lord or whether it is humble and believing.

Now, you don’t want to miss out on any of God’s blessings. You certainly don’t want to miss out on God’s eternal rest.

So, you cannot risk a prideful heart.

So, that’s why you must pay close attention to what we’re about to look at today.

Well, let’s pray and then we’ll hear from God’s word. Our heavenly father, I pray that you would humble our hearts this morning as we encounter this sobering text, the sobering set of texts, God, that we would see more of yourself, that you are a holy God, and that we cannot trifle with you. We cannot live hypocritically before you.

We cannot seek our own glory and not give it to you, for you are jealous for your glory. I pray that that truth would be seen very evidently today. You would help me to be able to explain it and help us to be able to apply this word in Jesus name. Amen.

Please take your Bibles and open to book of Numbers, chapter 16.

    Numbers 16.

This is where we’re going to find our first passage. We’re going to be in two different passages today. Numbers 16 is our first. That’s page 158 if you’re using the Pew Bible.

Bible doesn’t tell us very much about Israel’s experience in the 40 years of wandering. A lot of those years seem to be just skipped over. But we do hear about one instance in that wilderness wandering.

Soon after Israel’s failure to enter the promised land in Numbers 14, we hear about a certain rebellion that takes place, Kora’s rebellion. And this apparently takes place within the 40 years of wilderness wandering. And we see the account of that rebellion in this chapter. And what we’re going to do is we’re going to look at just the first part of the chapter, the account of the rebellion itself in verses 1 to 40, and then we’ll examine the aftermath, verses 41 to 50 afterwards. So, let’s go ahead and read verses 1 to 40, and hear about Kora’s rebellion. Here’s what it says.

Now, Kora, the son of Ishar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dayan and Abram, the sons of Elab, and An, the son of Paleth, sons of Reuben, took action.

And they rose before Moses or they rose up before Moses together with some of the sons of Israel, 250 leaders of the congregation chosen in the assembly, men of renown. They assembled together against Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone far enough for all the congregation are holy, every one of them. And the Lord, that is Yahweh, is in their midst. So why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of Yahweh?” When Moses heard this, he fell on his face, and he spoke to Kora and all his company, saying, “Tomorrow morning, Yahweh will show who is his and who is holy, and will bring near, bring him near to himself, even the one whom he will choose. He will bring near to himself. Do this, take sensors for yourselves, Kora, and all your company, and put fire in them, and lay incense upon them in the presence of Yahweh tomorrow. and the man whom Yahweh chooses shall be the one who is holy.

You have gone far enough, you sons of Levi.

Then Moses said to Kora, “Hear now, you sons of Levi, is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Yahweh, and to stand before the congregation, to minister to them, and that he has brought you near, Kora, and all your brothers, sons of Levi, with you.” And are you seeking for the priesthood also? Therefore, you and all your company are gathered together against Yahweh. But as for Aaron, who is he that you grumble against him?

Then Moses sent a summons to Dayathan and Abram, the sons of Elab, but they said, “We will not come up. Is it not enough that you have brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey to have us die in the wilderness, but you would also lorded over us? Indeed, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor have you given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards.

Would you put out the eyes of these men?

We will not come up.” Then Moses became very angry and said to Yahweh, “Do not regard their offering. I have not taken a single donkey from them, nor have I done harm to any of them.” Moses said to Kora, “You and all your company be present before Yahweh tomorrow. Both you and they along with Yahweh or along with Aaron, each of you take his fire pan and put incense on it.

And each of you bring his sensor before Yahweh. 250 fire pants. Also, you and Aaron shall each bring his fire pan.” So they each took his own sensor and put fire on it and laid incense on it. And they stood at the doorway of the tent of the of tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron. Thus Kora assembled all the congregation against them at the doorway of the tent of meeting. And the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the congregation.

Then Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron saying, “Separate yourselves from among this congregation that I may consume them instantly.” But they fell on their faces and said, “Oh God, God of all the spirits of all flesh, when one man sins, will you be angry with the entire congregation?” Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the congregation, saying, “Get back from around the dwellings of Kora, Dayan, and Abberham.” Then Moses arose and went to Dayam and Abram with the elders of Israel following him. And he spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart now from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, or you will be swept away in all their sin.” So they got back from around the dwellings, Zakora, Dayan, and Abram. And Dayan and Abram came out and stood at the doorway of their tents along with their wives and their sons and their little ones.

Moses said, “By this you shall know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these deeds, for this is not my doing. If these men die the death of all men, or if they suffer the fate of all men, then Yahweh has not sent me. But if Yahweh brings about an entirely new thing, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that is theirs, and they descend alive into shiel, that is the grave, then you will understand that these men have spurned Yahweh.” As he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up and their households and all the men who belonged to Kora with their possessions. So they and all that belong to them went down alive to shield, and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

All Israel who were around them fled at their outcry, for they said, “The earth may swallow us up.” Fire also came forth from Yahweh and consumed the 250 men who are offering the incense.

Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Say to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest that he shall take up the sensors out of the midst of the blaze, for they are holy, and you scatter the burning coals abroad. As for the sensors of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, let them be made into hammered sheets for a plating of the altar, since they did present them before Yahweh, and they are holy, and they shall be for a sign to the sons of Israel. So the aids of the priests took the bronze sensors which the men who are who were burned had offered and they hammered them out as a plating for the altar as a reminder to the sons of Israel that no layman who was not of the descendants of Aaron should come near to burn incense before Yahweh so that he will not become like Kora and his company just as Yahweh had spoken to him through Moses.

All right. Well, here’s the rebellion.

It is indeed a rebellion, even a mutiny against Aaron and against Moses. Let’s make some basic observations on the passage.

Notice the specific men mentioned in this rebellion in verse one. We have Kora from the tribe of Levi and also Dayan, Abram, and Anne were from the tribe of Reuben. Now, interestingly though, Anne is mentioned in verse one, he doesn’t appear anywhere else in our passage. So it may be that he was initially a leader in this rebellion but then withdrew and hopefully repented.

Now what’s special about the tribe of Levi? Can anyone tell me what were they chosen for?

It was from the tribe of Levi that the priest would come and Aaron is the line of the priesthood. But aside from Aaron, the Levites were also the ones who service the tabernacle. They transported all the implements. They helped set it up. They helped guard it to care for it.

This was a position of great privilege.

It was one given to them by God. So Kora is from the tribe of Levi. And we other men are from the tribe of Reuben. What’s special about the tribe of Reuben?

Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn. Though because of Reuben’s sin, he laid with his father’s concubine, he was in many ways kind of disinherited from any firstborn blessing. And we see that even in the last few chapters of Genesis, he says, “Hey, you’re not going to be blessed in a special way because of what you did.” So, Reuben lost the tribe lost its prominence though these men are from the tribe of Reuben.

Now, these are the leaders, but there are other men with them. Verse two tells us that 250 chiefs uh leaders, elected men, men of renown, they join these three or four men in the rebellion. And these other men are it says from the people apparently from the different tribes of Israel. Though verse 8 tells us because of how Moses speaks to these people that it appears that most of these men are from the tribe of Levi.

We’ve got these three or four leaders and then a number of Levites and others who are joined with them. And notice though that these other men are leaders among Israel.

Now notice the accusation that Kora and the others with him bring against Moses and Aaron. In verse three, they accuse Moses and Aaron of exalting themselves over the assembly of Israel.

In other words, they’re saying, “You have no right to take up the leadership of Israel as you have done. We have the same right to leadership, even spiritual leadership as you do.

Now, Moses position, his position as a leader, as a as a prophet, he’s one who meets with and speaks for God. Aaron, of course, was the high priest. And from him, a line of priests, his sons were engaged. Now, is this a true accusation?

Had Moses and Aaron indeed exalted themselves to these positions of leadership?

No, they had not. Who put them in that position?

God did. Moses and Aaron were specifically appointed these positions by God. Back in Exodus, God appointed Moses as a leader and as a prophet.

Appointed Aaron as his helper. And then later on, God appointed Aaron in his line as the priests of the priesthood.

So, they didn’t exalt themselves at all.

But notice though at this accusation in verse four, Moses falls on his face.

It’s a sign of humility, dependence on God. Then Moses proposes a test to settle this issue of leadership. It says the 250 men should come along with Kor and present their sensors with incense before God. And Yahweh will then choose between all those who are offering incense because Aaron’s going to be offering incense at the same time. And God will choose between them and indicate which man or men he has chosen to appear before him.

By the way, is this the first time that Moses’s leadership has been directly challenged in Israel?

No. Every time Israel’s complained against Moses, they’ve been challenging his leadership. But also, in one of the events that we didn’t look at together specifically back in Numbers 12, Miriam and Aaron actually challenged Moses with a kind of similar argument.

They said, “Hey, Moses, why should you be the number one position, and we’re just as good as leaders as you are?” And does anybody know how God responded to that?

    Miriam.

Yeah. Miriam was afflicted with leprosy for a week and God made very clear, I will choose the one who will draw near to me, not you. And I’ve chosen Moses.

Now, Israel was witness to that.

The Kora and his associates, they were witness to that. God affirmed Moses’s leadership. But here, nonetheless, we have the people challenging Moses and also challenging Aaron over their leadership positions.

By the way, do you notice anything interesting about the phrase that appears at the ending of verse 7?

    Yes. What’s interesting about that?

Very good. You see some repetition in the text. A little bit of uh not exactly irony, but certainly something profound here. They tell Moses, “Hey, you’ve gone too far. You’ve gone far enough in exalting yourself.” Moses says, “Actually, you’ve gone far enough in exalting yourself, you sons of Levi.

You’ve been given a privileged position and now you want something more.

You don’t want to don’t as Levites, you simply don’t want to service the tabernacle. You want the priesthood also.” And notice also Moses recognizes the true nature of their complaints in verse 11. He says outwardly, “You’re complaining about me. You’re complaining about Aaron. But really, you’re complaining against God. You’re complaining against Yahweh himself.” Now, Moses then summons Dayan and Abram to come to this assembly of the 250 men offering their sensors. But Dayan and Abram won’t come. They repudiate his summons directly disobey Moses. And then they lab or they lay further accusations on Moses in verses 12 to 14. They accuse Moses of failing to bring them into the promised land. They accuse him of causing them to die in the wilderness.

And they accuse him beyond all these failures of lording his authority over them. Now, what about these accusations?

Are these true? Is it Moses’s fault that these things happened?

No. Again, this is not true. In fact, it’s the opposite of true. Moses wanted to lead the the people of Israel into the land flowing with milk and honey.

But they were the ones who were not willing due to their sinful unbelief.

And in the wilderness, it was God putting judgment on the people and causing them to die over these 40 years.

    It was not Moses.

Moses has been trying to get them to trust the Lord. Far from harming any of his people, what has Moses actually been doing for the people again and again?

He’s been interceding, praying, he’s been protecting and saving their lives.

And they’re accusing him of the of causing all their trouble.

So these are wicked accusations from these men.

They’re taking their own failures and putting the blame on Moses.

So notice how Moses responds to this second set of accusations in verse 15.

Becomes very angry and he protests his innocence before God. He even prays against the rebels that God would not accept their offering. He says, “God, you know that what they’re doing is wrong, so do not accept the incense that they offer before you.” Well, the majority of rebels do assemble and they offer their incense before Yahweh along with Aaron. Notice verse 19 says though that Kora assembled all the congregation against Moses and Aaron as well. So don’t get the idea that this is just a small pot of rebels who have their thing going on. No, somehow they’ve got all Israel to at least be a little bit behind them. So this is indeed a mutiny of the whole nation against Moses and Aaron.

And then God appears before the people and notice what God says to Moses and Aaron in verse 21. He says, “Get away from Israel because I’m going to destroy them all instantly.” I know their complicity in this wicked rebellion. God is essentially saying, “They deserve to die, so let me destroy them.” What do Moses and Aaron do? What do they reply in verse 22? They say, “God, will you destroy everyone for one man’s sin?

So what are Moses and Aaron again doing for Israel?

    They’re interceding for their salvation.

Lord, please don’t destroy all the people. Yes, they’re doing wrong here, but it’s really the leaders who are leading them into the it’s Kora and his companions. Will you really destroy them all because of Kora?

So God listens to Moses and Aaron and he commands he the second command that the people separate from the dwellings of Kora, Dayan, and Abram. He says, “Moses, tell the people to do that.” And Moses does. In verse 27, Moses gives the command that people do separate from the households of Kora, Dayan, and Abram.

Kor apparently with the men before the tabernacle. Dayan and Abram are still in their tents. And those two men, they stand at the door of their tents with their families, with their wives, their children, and their little ones. And then Moses in verses 28 to30, he tells the people how to interpret what’s about what’s about to happen. He says, “If Kora, Dayan, and Abraham, if they live out their lives and die normally as people do, then I’m not really God’s prophet, and these men are right. But if these men and their households are swallowed up suddenly by the ground, and you will all know that these men are wicked rebels against God.

And then notice verse 31. As soon as Moses finishes that explanation, soon as he finishes speaking, the ground opens beneath these men, their tents, their possessions, their families, and their slaves, and everything falls into the chasm, and the earth closes over them.

Fire also comes down from heaven and consumes Kora and the 250 leaders who are offering incense before the tabernacle.

Would this not have been a frightening sight? The opening of the earth, all the the trauma in the ground that’s associated with that, the closing of it, the fire from heaven. You can understand why Israel reacts the way it does in verse 34.

This would have been very frightening to see all these people destroyed suddenly.

Now, side note, Numbers 26, Numbers 26 9-11 gives us a little bit of extra information, a little comment on this event. Listen to what it says. You can turn there if you want, but Numbers 26:es 9-11 says this. This is part of the second census of Israel. It says, “The sons of Elab, Nemuel and Dayan and Abram, these are the Daythan and Abram who were called by the congregation who contended against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Kora when they contended against Yahweh. And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up along with Kora. And when that company died, when the fire devoured devoured 250 men, so that they became a warning. And now verse 11, the sons of Kora, however, did not die.

Huh? Numbers 26:11 says the sons of Kora did not die. But back here in our chapter, Numbers 16:32 specifically says that all the men who belonged to Kora with their possessions, they were those who were part of the group who were swallowed up by the earth. Is this a contradiction? Well, no. I we know enough at this point. This is not a contradiction. So, how is it that Numbers 16:32 and Numbers 26:11 are both true?

What must have happened for all of those in the household of Kora with the tent to be destroyed and then yet have the sons of Kora survive.

It must be it. Remember Moses’s warning was get away from the tents of these men.

And apparently most of the family did not. But it looks like the sons of Kora did, or at least some of the sons of Kora, they left their father.

They decided not to stand with their father, whether he was standing before the tabernacle or standing somewhere else. And they said, “We’re going to we’re going to get away from the tent.” And they survived.

Now, here’s the interesting thing. Where did the sons of Kora appear later in the scriptures?

They were worship leaders. And what else did they do?

They wrote a number of the psalms. Yeah, it’s almost I think uh 10 or 12 psalms.

We have a little description at the beginning that says they were written by the sons of Kora. These are the same sons. They are the descendants of that rebellious Kora that we’re reading about here. The sons of Kora became worship songwriters and leaders and even authors of part of scripture. So, whenever you read any of those psalms, try to keep the family history in mind. I wish I had time to go go through some of those psalms with you together, but think of Psalm 46 specifically, which begins with a number of lines talking about how even if the earth should change and the mountains quake and all these seismic disruptions, yet we will trust in Yahweh.

I think there’s a reference to the family history there. Or the middle of that psalm talks about the nations of the earth rebelling against Yahweh and how God stops them with a word. And then at the very end of the psalm, that famous line, Psalm 46:10, be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. We often think of that phrase as being a a cure for anxiety. You know, okay, I just need to stop and be at peace. But in the context of that psalm, he’s actually talking about rebellion. He’s saying, you nations, you peoples, be still. Stop rebelling against Yahweh. Why? Because I will be exalted among the nations. He says, “You won’t win in a rebellion against me. I will be exalted.” I think the sons of Kora would appreciate that truth especially.

So remember that when you when you see the Psalms, sons of Kora.

Anyways, back to our our text here, number 16. Sons of Kora separate, but the rest are destroyed. Notice what are done with the sensors of the consumed individuals, the consumed rebel leaders.

In verses 36 to 40, God commands that they be gathered, that be formed into a cover for the altar as a reminder of the judgment that God brought on those who were not authorized to burn incense, who had exalted themselves and tried to get in on what God had aortioned to the line of Aaron.

So, wow, what a powerful lesson. What a powerful testimony to all of Israel about rebelling against God. Surely they got the point right. Don’t do what Kora and the others had done.

But before we turn to the interpretation questions, we need to read the rest of the chapter. Let’s look at the aftermath of this rebellion. Verses 4150.

    Here’s what it says.

But on the next day, all the congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You are the ones who have caused the death of Yahweh’s people.

came about, however, when the congregation had assembled against Moses and Aaron, that they turned toward the tent of meeting, and behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Yahweh appeared. Then Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, and Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Get away from among this congregation that I may consume them instantly.” Then they fell on their faces. Moses said to Aaron, “Take your sensor and put in it fire from the altar and lay incense on it. Then bring it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them for wrath has gone forth from Yahweh. The plague has begun.

And Aaron took it as Moses had spoken and ran into the midst of the assembly.

The for behold the plague had begun among the people. So uh he took his stand between the dead and the living.

Oh, I’m sorry. So he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. He took his stand between the dead and the living so that the plague was checked.

But those who died by the plague were 14,700 besides those who died on account of Kora. Then Aaron returned to Moses at the doorway of the tented meeting for the plague had been checked.

Whoa. Notice how the congregation of Israel responded the next day to Kora’s rebellion.

They blamed Moses and Aaron and complained against them.

We read this and we say, “Are you serious? Israel, you drew the totally wrong lesson. Kora and his company, they just complained against Moses and Aaron, and now you’re going to do the same. You see what God did to them?

Notice how God responds to the people’s complaint here in verses 42 to 45. He appears in his cloud, his glory cloud over the tent of meeting, and he tells Moses and Aaron, he’s just going to consume the people. Get away from them.

I got to consume them. I I can’t take any more of this.

What do Moses and Aaron do? They fall on their faces before God. Moses instructs Aaron to quickly burn some incense on a center, a sensor, atone for the people’s sin. And why? Because a fast and deadly plague is already spreading among the people. And then we have this just dramatic deliverance. Aaron is running.

He brings the sensor right into the midst of the people. But it says in verse 48, he stood between the dead and the living. It’s like this wave of death was just spreading through the congregation. Aaron runs as fast as he can and he stands in the middle of them and that’s where the wave stops. The tidal wave of death breaks right where Aaron is and it recedes. On the one side are the dead. On the other side are the living.

Yet, despite Moses and Aaron’s efforts to quickly intercede for Israel to move as fast as they can, we’re still here. How many people died? Almost 15,000 14,700 people.

    Substantial number in Israel.

    And this is God’s judgment.

It could have been worse. That’s the crazy part. Moses and Aaron hadn’t done anything.

So now considering the entire passage, let’s ask a few interpretation questions.

First, the people of Israel’s accusations against Moses and Aaron were clearly false.

So why did they make these accusations?

And why do they even believe them? What do you think?

Yeah, I think you’re right, Mark. What we’re seeing here is just the effects of pride, hardened heart, love of sin. It causes them to assert and believe that which is not true. Because let’s face it, it feels good in the flesh to be proud. There’s a certain intoxicating effect to pride to exalting oneself to thinking well and highly of oneself and especially as part of that to blame others for your own failures to blame others for your sin. I mean this is a temptation we all feel right when we we are confronted with the reality of our sin we’re tempted to just blame others because that allows us to continue to feel good about ourselves and to look down on others. I remember I had a philosophy professor in college. He in one of the classes I took with him, he was trying to make the point that whenever you realize that something is true, you can’t help but admit it. You can’t convince yourself otherwise. But you know what? Ever since that time, I’m like actually he’s so wrong because he doesn’t appreciate he doesn’t appreciate what the scriptures say. The effect of pride of heart, the effect of sin does cause you to suppress what you know is true. Romans 1, right? You can because of love of sin, you can live in a fantasy world, one that makes you feel good about yourself and how you rebel against God because sin does have that that momentary pleasure that goes with it. And that’s what the people of Israel are doing here. That’s what Kora and his men, they’re indulging in pride and therefore believing that which is patently untrue.

Now I I see your hand, Roy. Let me come back to that in just a second. What is the tragic irony though in the people’s continual complaints against Moses and Aaron?

    That’s true.

It did in the past. They were delayed from going into the promised land by their complaining. This group, this appears to be the first generation, so they’re not going to go into the promised land no matter what. But they’re certainly bringing more trouble on themselves by complaining. But what else is the deep irony here? They’re complaining specifically against Moses and Aaron and their leadership.

That’s right. These are their intercessors. They’re actually going to intercede over these complaints. But the very ones who are their saviors, guardians, protectors, the one who are actually protecting them from their own sin. They’re the ones that they want to get rid of. They’re the ones that they want to see removed from office, even destroyed.

And isn’t this always what sin does?

Back in the garden, Adam and Eve, they are persuaded by the devil via the form of the serpent that the Lord is really the enemy. Yeah, you know, he seems like a generous guy, but no, he’s really your enemy. So sin and the pride that came with that sin because remember, they wanted to be like God. It caused them to turn from the only one who could actually love, help, protect, and provide for them to Satan who was a deceiver. And then when they fell into their sin, realized what they had done, realized they were naked. Then what did they do?

They hid from God. The only one who would be able to save and help them in that situation. And then when God came and confronted them, then what did they do? They blamed each other and blamed God.

Sin, you see the wickedness of sin, the deceitfulness, the folly of sin. It causes one to look at those who can actually help you in a truly spiritual way and regard them as the enemy, God himself and his people.

Sin and pride are so self-destructive.

And we see that with the people of Israel. They’re trying to get rid of Moses and Aaron when those two men are their saviors. And you know in Acts chapter 7 when Stephen gives his speech to the Sanhedrin, he’s going to say, “Look, this is what Israel has always done. They always take the deliverers that God sends and they treat them as enemies. They reject them and kill them if they can.” And you know what? They did the same thing with God’s own son.

That’s Steven’s accusation at the Sanhedrin. He said, “You did the same thing with Jesus the Christ. You crucified him when he was the savior that God had sent.” That’s because your hearts are so hard, just like the people of Israel before you. Of course, they didn’t like to hear that. And so, what did they do? The same thing. They killed Steven, the one who was pointing them to deliverance.

We do not want to fall into that same pattern of self-destructive pride. We want to humble ourselves and receive the help that only Yahweh can give through his servants.

Now, a separate question. Actually, Roy, let me let me come back to you. You had something you wanted to share.

Yeah, right. I think that’s really true. Thank you for sharing that, Roy. Um, the the lack of really spiritual self-awareness is a contributor and also a symptom to pride. They really did believe that they were holier than they were in a sense.

They were wholly set apart by God. The whole nation was. That’s true. But they use that as a way to downplay their own sin and to even exalt themselves beyond what God had given them. And you’re right, there is the same temptation today in each one of us to when we think about, oh, I’m in Christ now. I’ve received all these blessings and we can go uh we can stop thinking of ourselves as sinners desperately in need of God’s grace. Yes, we do progress in sanctification. That’s very important.

You know, pastor’s talking about that.

But we can’t lose sight of the fact that apart from Christ, we are the most miserable wretches deserve to be consumed instantly the way that Israel did.

And even the the progress that we make in holiness is only by God’s grace. And so when we lose sight of that or when we start thinking like, “Oh, I’m way better than these other people.” We’re on a path to destruction just as these people were. So yeah, totally right. Now, let me go in a little bit different direction here with a question that may have occurred to you. How is it right that God executed the wives, the children, and even the slaves of Kora, Dayan, and Abram?

You say, “Wait, didn’t God doesn’t God say somewhere in the scripture that he won’t punish parents for their children or children for their parents?” Yes, that’s in Ezekiel 18. So, what’s going on here? Well, I wish I had time to fully explore this. This is a somewhat difficult question. I think on the one hand we we face one of the tragic realities of life which is you’re affected by the spiritual choices of others especially your parents. If they choose wisely and righteously you experience the benefit from that but if they choose foolishly and sinfully well you experience consequences of that painful consequences of that. It’s not a judgment on you necessarily but it is a reality of life. And you can’t talk about it in terms of oh I didn’t deserve this. Well, none of us deserve anything, anything that we receive from our parents. We can’t say, “Oh, I deserve the good, or I deserve the neutral.” No, you don’t. You don’t deserve anything except judgment from God because you’re part of that sinful line of rebels starting from Adam. But this is just a reality of life. And so, when Kora rebelled and God judged Kora, there was some effects, some very deadly effects to those who were part of his family.

And God knows what he’s doing with particular family members. If you experience the consequences of other people’s sin, even your parents, God is doing something in that his own good purposes. Again, it’s not necessarily a judgment on you, too, because God says he he is just in that way. He doesn’t punish other people for sins not committed by them. Everyone is judged for their own sin, but consequences of others actions is a reality of life. But along with that and I think maybe the the emphasis here is actually on the complicity of their families.

I do believe that they are partly responsible for the sin of Kora, Dayan and Abram and that they are rightfully judged. And why do I say that? Well, two reasons. One, God commanded the people through Moses to separate from the tents of these men. That command went to the family members too. If they stayed with their father, if they stayed with their rebel family members, then they’re agreeing, all right, we’ll take the same consequence. And secondly, as we already noted, the sons of Kora apparently did separate from their father. So it’s not as if God said, all right, I have to kill all of the family too.

Not necessarily. There was opportunity for even sons to leave the tents and be spared from the judgment. Most of them did not do so. And so they perished along with their rebellion. By staying together, they’re essentially affirming we stand with his sinful choice and therefore God’s judgment was just.

So this was not God being too harsh.

So then what does God clearly reveal and emphasize about himself in this passage?

What do you think? What’s one thing?

God will not be mocked. That’s true.

    What else?

He demands obedience and in the way he prescribed. You can’t come up with your own kind of obedience. You can’t say, “All right, he ordained these guys as priests, but I really want to be a priest, too. I’m sorry. You have to come the Lord’s way.” And if you’re not going to pay attention to that, then be prepare prepare for the Lord’s chastening. God’s a serious God. His standards are serious. What else do we see? His holiness is dramatically underscored, is it not? When you violate what God has commanded, he must for the sake of his own holiness and righteousness and goodness judge it. He must act in justice against your evil, against your sin. And that’s what we see happening here. See other things, of course. We see the wrath of God, his terrible anger, which is a righteous anger. We see that God is opposed to the proud, but he gives grace to the humble. Shows grace to Moses and Aaron, but he destroys Kora in his company. He is merciful. He is patient. He doesn’t do to Israel what they deserved. But his patience does has limits. When they rebelled again, there was a judgment, though it was still limited. He’s sovereign. He has the right to exalt whomever he wishes. You say, even in your own life today, oh, why don’t I have this? or why am I not in the position that other person is in the position and I want that position too.

If you are inappropriately desiring something like that, you need to rest.

You need to stop and rest in God’s sovereignty. You say, “Well, God knows what he’s doing with that person. It is right for that person to have that thing or that position right now. And it is right for me not to have it.” Now, there are certain things, even positions that we can desire in a righteous way. You know, the scriptures say, “If any man desires to be an elder, he desires a good thing.” Not wrong to have that desire. if a man is qualified and if he h desires that for the right reasons.

But we need to remember God’s sovereignty. He aortions, he exalts as he chooses in his own wisdom and pleasure. And what God chooses to do is good.

And as we said, God is to be worshiped in the way that he actually prescribes.

We could point to other things, but already now hopefully you’re thinking a little bit about application. As I mentioned at the beginning, we have to confront our own hearts. Are our hearts proud against God? Are we looking to exalt ourselves even to believe what is false if it will indulge some prideful fantasy we have?

Or are we instead humble before the Lord?

Do we have that view that the sons of Corora did not have, which is, Lord, I do not deserve any of the good. I’m so glad that you even gave me any of the privileges and gifts that you have. Or are we like them and saying, you know what, I want more. You know, this is good, but I want more. I won’t be satisfied till I have more. Oh, let’s not go to that place.

Well, we’ve seen Aresh how this first generation of Israel, they are manifesting their character. They are a sinful, unbelieving, prideful people.

And so, in a sense, we’re not that surprised by what they do here. I mean, they’ve been doing this all along before Sinai, after Sinai, after they even had a chance to go into the land.

    They are an unbelieving people.

That’s part of why God says you’re all going to perish in the wilderness over these 40 years.

But we’re not the only ones who can be susceptible to sinful pride. The next passage we’re going to look at, we’re going to see how even God’s righteous, God’s faithful can slip into pride and experience painful consequences of it.

So, please take your Bibles and turn to Numbers chapter 20.

Numbers chapter 20. This also will give us some comments on the second generation because starting in Numbers 20, we’re actually with the second generation as it prepares to go into the promised land. Wilderness wanderings are coming to an end.

The last people who are to die off are dying off and then Israel’s indeed going to go into Canaan. So this be around 1406 BC, 1407, 1406.

Let’s hear what we find in Numbers 20:es 1-13.

Numbers 21-13. It says, “Then the sons of Israel, the whole congregation came to the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and people stayed at Cadesh. Now Miriam died there and was buried there.

There was no water for the congregation.” And they assembled themselves against Moses and Aaron.

People thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before Yahweh. Why then have you brought the Yahweh’s assembly into this wilderness for us to for us and our beast to die here? Why have you made us come up from Egypt to bring us into this wretched place? Is it not a place or it is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink? Then Moses and Aaron came in from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent and meeting and fell on their faces. Then the glory of Yahweh appeared to them, and Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Take the rod, and you and your brother Aaron, assemble the congregation, and speak to the rock before their eyes that it may yield its water. shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock, and let the congregation and their beasts drink.

So Moses took the rod from before Yahweh, just as he had commanded him.

And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock, and he said to them, “Listen now, you rebels. Shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?” Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod. And water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank.

But Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you have not believed me to treat me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” Those were the waters of Meabbah because the sons of Israel contended with Yahweh and he proved himself holy among them.

Oh, very sad. Let’s observe here.

Israel has returned to Kadesh, which is actually the same site southwest of Canaan, from which they had sent out the 12 spies to first spy out the land. So, they’re back at this site getting ready to go into Canaan. And this passage may feel a lot like déja vu, not just because we’re back at Kadesh, but notice the second generation of Israel is facing a situation that the first generation faced. They’ve got no water.

We’re there in the wilderness with no water. And one would hope that the second generation would respond a little bit differently than the first.

They responded with unbelief the first time. What about the second time? Well, no. Second generation does the same.

What do we see in verse two and following? They complain and they contend against Moses and Aaron. And notice how obnoxious their complaint is.

They say, “It would be better for us to have died with our brothers in the wilderness.” Either referring to Kora’s rebellion, which is a crazy thought, or to just the wilderness wandering itself.

Be better if we just died over there.

Why’d you bring us here to die? This is a very annoying complaint.

Per usual though, Moses and Aaron humbly fall on their faces before Yahweh over this. And notice God’s response. Verse eight, he does not say, “Get away from the congregation. I’m going to destroy them.” Not here. In fact, no judgment is threatened. God says, “Instead, Moses, take the rod, go to the certain rock, and speak to it, and water will come out for them and for all their animals.” Now, the last time that Moses brought water from a rock, he didn’t speak to it. Remember what he did back in Exodus 17? He struck the rock.

But this time, God says, “Speak to the rock.” But should be no problem, right?

Moses and Aaron, men of God, they know how to do this. Verse 10, they gathered the people before the rock. Notice what Moses says. He says, “Listen now, you rebel. Shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?” What’s odd about that statement?

Yeah, I mean that’s the sad irony, right? He’s basically calling them rebels when he himself is rebelling. And what is the emphasis in this statement?

We’re going to do it. We’re going to give you deliverance. So, who’s the who’s the glory supposed to belong to according to this statement?

To Moses and Aaron. We’re going to bring forth water from the rock for you. And not only that, but then Moses strikes the rock twice. God didn’t say strike it. Moses did.

By the way, what’s Aaron doing? What’s Aaron doing in these verses? Verses 10 to 11.

He’s there not doing anything as far as we know, just standing by. Nothing’s reported in the text. And look at the result. Verse 11. Water does come forth abundantly from the rock. Wow. You didn’t do what God God said and you still got the result. That’s wonderful.

Notice verse 12. God tells Moses and Aaron, “Neither of you are now going to take the people of Israel into the land. Why?

Because you did not believe me and because you did not treat me as holy in the sight of Israel.” The place was then named Meabba, which is the same name given to that other place of water testing, Masa and Meabbah, that was on a different part of the wilderness. But a similar name is given here because Meabba means contention. People contended against Moses and God there. And Yahweh, it says, proved himself holy.

Let’s talk about interpretation once again.

After 40 years of miraculous provision in the wilderness, why did the people contend against Moses over lack of water? Shouldn’t they have known by now?

Well, it’s the same thing we saw earlier. This is pride and unbelief in the heart.

They’re not willing to endure by faith.

They say, “I want what I want and I want it now. I’m uncomfortable because of this shortage of water. Therefore, I’m I’m going to complain.” There’s no gratefulness for their past provision from God. No gratefulness for their privileged position as the generation that actually will go into the promised land. All of that is forgotten. They say, “I want more. God hasn’t provided enough.” And yet, how does Moses himself degenerate into ungrateful pride?

See, in the passage, he exalts himself instead of God.

But we ask, Moses, you were doing so well. You’ve been a great leader for all this time. You’re such a humble man. How is it that you slipped into pride here?

We could say a number of things in explanation. Certainly he was provoked by the people. That’ll come up again in Deuteronomy.

But even in that provocation, he was responsible for his choice.

Certainly Moses knew better. He knew better than most of Israel that he is not to rob glory from God.

But he was still a man. He was still subject to sinful temptation. And in this moment he yielded to that temptation to feel the pleasure of indulging in pride rather the pleasure of honoring God. There’s no person who is immune from temptation and Moses yielded to it here.

But why does God punish Aaron too? Says both of you didn’t believe me. Both of you didn’t give me the glory. How how could that be true?

That’s right. That seems to be the answer. Roy, we don’t have the full report of what Aaron did. Maybe he was more obviously supportive of what Moses chose to do, but even if he did nothing, that was complicity in itself. This is a terrible thing that Moses was doing before the people. Aaron should have confronted him over it, but he didn’t.

So, for whatever reason, God said, “Aaron, you’re responsible, too. Both of you will no longer go into the land.” Now, we may say, “But isn’t this a little harsh? I mean, these men, they’ve been faithful. They’ve been interceding.

They’ve been looking to be uh keep God’s glory intact before the people of Israel. God, are you really going to punish them this way for such a minor slip up?” But in asking that question, we if we are indeed asking that question, we are betraying a little bit of misunderstanding. This is not a harsh judgment from God.

Again, as we said, Moses and Aaron, they ought to know, they ought to have known better after all that they had seen, after all that they had experienced, after all that God had done for them and through them. They ought to have known better. And we also, we underestimate the offense of their sin before God.

They were robbing God of glory. and in a particularly important way because remember this is the second generation.

They’re doing an evil thing by complaining against God. But notice God doesn’t judge this second generation immediately. I think part of the reason is that God says, “All right, new generation. I’m giving you a little bit more grace. This is new for you, but here’s an instance where I’m going to put my glory on display so that you’ll all learn. This is a particularly important teaching moment for the people of Israel via the second generation.” Moses and Aaron, this is what I need you to do so that they’ll be able to get this lesson. They’ll behold my holiness and my power. What do Moses and Aaron do? They take that important moment and they use it for themselves. Rather than having the people believe in Yahweh, have the people believe and trust in mere men, Aaron, Moses.

They took the glory that belonged to God. That was going to be such an important lesson for the people at that time and they took it for themselves.

And God is a jealous God. His glory he will not give to another. And Moses and Aaron though they were privileged by God experienced his blessings. They are mere men. They are like us dust. We don’t deserve to exalt ourselves.

We have sin in us. So they didn’t deserve the glory.

And as leaders they were more more accountable. You know James says James chapter 3, let not many of you become teachers because we will have a stricter judgment. And throughout the Old Testament, we do see that God holds leaders especially accountable for what they do. So for all these reasons, we can see that God was not being harsh with them. In fact, it really was God’s mercy. They should have been consumed.

Moses, how dare you? How dare you take my glory? Aaron, how dare you? Consider the patience I’ve shown you up to this point. Aaron, you made a golden calf.

How dare you do this? But God says, I won’t destroy you. But you won’t go into the land. You’ve done a terrible thing in robbing and attempting to rob my glory. In fact, that lesson that I was going to give the people of Israel, you’ve now marred. So now I’m going to have to give the lesson in a different way.

You wouldn’t display my holiness and my glory. So now when Israel understands the judgment that I’m putting on you, they’ll get the lesson. they’ll understand. Oh, the reason Moses and Aaron aren’t taking us in is because they tried to rob the glory of God. I have to get my lesson in a different way. Now, Israel needed to learn. So, it had to come one way or another.

So, what do we see revealed and emphasized in this section of of text?

It’s very similar to what we saw before.

God is holy. God is the judge. His standards and his commands cannot be fudged. You can’t say, “Well, we struck it last time.” We could just do that again. No, you have to listen to the words of Yahweh. What does God say in Isaiah? To this one, I will look to him who is humble and contrite in heart and who trembles at my word. Every word of God is precious and serious. You are to tremble before it.

Can’t treat it lightly. See that God will punish sin. God is jealous for his own glory.

and that we must be serious in our relationship with him. They say, “But wait, I thought God is merciful and compassionate.” He is, and he’s actually been demonstrating that even in these accounts of judgment. But we can’t miss the other side because what do we do in our flesh? We’re so prone to take the mercy and compassion of God and use it as an excuse for sin. We say, “God’s a loving God. Doesn’t really matter if I go into this sin. He’ll forgive me.” Israel was thinking something like that.

What did God say? I’ve got to show you that I am a holy God as well. We need to learn that lesson too.

God is not to be trifled with. Nor will he give his glory to another.

So you can see from these multiple instances of sinful pride, it brought about the holy opposition of the one true God who is a jealous God.

Now, there’s one more account that shows the same thing. I I wanted to get to that today. Numbers 21. We have the account of the fiery serpents, but we don’t have time for that. So, I hope that you’ll look that look at that on your own. Numbers 21.

But how can we apply what we’re seeing today?

I’ll give you some different suggested ways. Number one, you’ve got to see. You need to humble yourself before God.

Realize just how much good you’ve received from God that you do not deserve.

how much that you have not received from God that you do deserve for your sin and let that teach you to be humble before God. Appreciate all his small graes.

Appreciate how undeserving you are of his mercy.

People in these accounts lost sight of that and that’s why they went into sin and suffered the consequences.

Number two, give God continual thanks. I know some of you are going through difficult situations, things that are hard spiritually or physically or both.

But the good hand of God is on you even in that. So don’t turn to complaint.

Don’t turn to bitterness of heart. And if circumstances that you’re experiencing are partly due to your own sin, your own foolish choices, don’t blame God. Don’t blame others. Instead, thank God for how he’s still been gracious to you despite what you’ve done.

Thank God for the privileged position you have no matter what if you are in Christ.

    Number three, beware exalting yourself.

Kora and his rebels, they once wanted a position of authority, prestige, power, influence that did not belong to them.

And there’s a similar temptation today, especially when it comes to leadership in the home and leadership in the church.

We’re going to see from second Peter as pastor takes us through it. God warns that there will be people from among believers in the church who will try to raise themselves up as leaders, teachers who are in fact immoral, doctrally unqualified. They’re teaching what is false and living an evil life.

God says, “You do not have any right to leadership.” And we know it’s more popular in our day for people to ignore the prescriptions of God’s word and have women leadership in the church.

female pastors, female elders, or it’s more popular to have an egalitarian view of the home. Oh, the husband and wife will be co-leaders, or they’ll take turns as leaders. And people basically advancing the same argument as Kora.

Hey, we’re all holy. We’ve all got the same privileges in Christ. Why do you men exalt yourselves?

But the response is actually the same.

That is, men have not exalted themselves.

and shouldn’t be exalting themselves because that role has been given to men by God as leaders in the church and leaders in the home. Nothing to do with men being superior or worth more to God.

All has to do with just the roles that God has given.

If we inappropriately desire a position of leadership or authority when we are not qualified or when it goes against God’s word, we need to repent. We need to stop and we need to repent because otherwise we are proceeding down the same path as Kora. And for the leaders that we have, we need to treat them with a dignity and respect that honors God.

Those who are in authority, God says they have their positions from God.

And so for God’s sake, we are to honor those authorities.

We need to beware exalting ourselves.

And then finally, we need to remember God’s holiness.

Israel always tried to push the envelope with God and they suffered for it. We need to learn from their negative example. Let us not test the Lord. Let’s not take God for granted. Let’s not excuse our sin or rationalize it. Yes, we run to Christ for grace for our sin.

There is an advocate and a mediator for our sin. We don’t work our way to God.

It is only by the blood of Christ we made acceptable to the Lord. And yet, he has called us to holiness. Not to be saved, but because we’re saved.

God says, “Be holy, for I am holy.” That’s still true for us. We are to rever God in our heart and show that reverence in how we walk before him.

But are we walking that way?

If you have questions about what you’ve heard today, please email me. That’s all the time we have. Next week, Israel is going to get closer into going into the land, but they’re going to do it a different way than they would have the first time. They’re going to go around.

We’re going to go to the east side of the Jordan and they’re going to counter a little opposition along the way. We’re going to see how Moses leads the people in battle against two kings and even see how God takes somebody’s attempt to curse Israel and God uses it as a avenue for blessing on Israel and even a prophecy of a coming delivering seed.

We’ll talk about all of that next time.

    Let’s close in prayer.

Heavenly Father, it is a sober word.

God, we need to take seriously your holiness. We are so thankful that you are a loving God and that is our only hope, your mercy. You are full of loving kindness and mercy. But God, you are holy, and we are not to trifle with you.

Lord, help us to have the right kind of reverence before you, to have a holy fear of you that is consistent with a love of you. And God, help us protect us from pride, from the deceitful self-destruction of pride.

Walk humbly before you God because that is the place of blessing in Jesus name.

okay let’s take our Bibles this morning and turn to numbers chapter 32 numbers chapter 32 of course I’m not in first Peter this morning I will pick that up next week and I do want to remind everyone next week we immediately after our service we had a we have a wedding so we have to accommodate that next week so things are going to be running a little tight next week service so numbers chapter 32 in the Pew Bible it’s on page 178 and I thought I would just this morning preach on to be an encourage in the church in the body of Christ but I’m going to do it in a way from the Old Testament that I’m going to bring out something that maybe you never thought of before and so in light of this coming year I would like to ask you two questions the first question is when did you last encourage someone else in the things of the Lord and secondly is the matter of your life one that is more discouraging or encouraging to yourself and others so let’s make sure that there’s no lack of encouragement in our relationships with others this next coming year and let us pass encouragement around as if it is good tasting candy that adds sweetness to our fellowship see from time to time we all need some kind of encouragement someone to believe in us someone to lift us up when were cast down someone to notice us when we seem to have been forgotten someone to encourage us when we are truly discouraged and that encouragement usually comes from people see this Lord’s Day I want to bring to your attention the reality that you can either be a discouraged ER or an encourage your in Christ Church and you may not even know it to put the first more strongly I would say this it is sin to discourage the Brethren also it is significant to know that in Satan’s bag of deceptions maybe discouragement is his best tool maybe it is a favorite tool I read I ran across this antidote once where it said that I read once that the devil was having a yard sale and all his tools were marked with different prices there were they were a fiendish lot there was hatred there was jealousy there was the seat that was lying there was pride all that had expensive prices but over on the side of the yard on display was a tool more obviously worn than all the other tools and it also is most costly the tool was labeled discouragement when questioned the devil said it is more useful to me than any other tool when I can’t bring down my victims with any of the rest of these tools I use discouragement because so few people realize it belongs to me so this morning in order to hedge against committing this sin and I am calling it a sin because scripture does that is the sin of discouraging the Brethren consider with me three ways that believers can be in danger of committing the sin then if time permits I’ll look at about four different elements related to the characteristic of an encourager but first looking at our passage in numbers chapter 32 the first thing is the three ways believers can be in danger of committing the sin of discourage discouraging the Brethren and the first one is this by an inconsistent life by an inconsistent life a life that doesn’t match up with the will of God and where the Spirit of God is taking us now before we look at the passage let’s pray Lord this morning I just pray then ask you that you would use me as your servant to bring forth the Word of God that the Word of God may be impressed upon our heart so Lord that we examine ourselves and that we make the adjustments needed in the sanctifying process of the Spirit of God that we would be encouragers in our relationships with others in the body of Christ and I pray Lord that if we in any way have lived in a way that we have been discouraging to others I pray Lord you allow us to repent of that and put that off so Lord we can walk in righteousness and holiness and I pray this this morning in Christ’s name Amen now if you look at verse number one through five of our passage it says this now numbers 32 verse 1 now the sons of Reuben the sons of God had an exceedingly large number of livestock so when they had to saw the land of jeiza in the land of Gilad that it was indeed a place suitable for livestock the sons of again the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the congregation saying after auth D’banj acer nimrod heshbon alula saebom Nebo and beyond the land which the Lord conquered before the congregation of Israel is a land for livestock and your servants have livestock and they said they said if we have found favor in your sight but this land be given to servants as a possession now I want you to look at the last part of verse number five do not take us across the Jordan now that’s very significant to the passage in the context of this particular passage because what God was doing was giving the people the promised land they weren’t there at the promised land yet they were heading there that across the Jordan to get there and this group of people these two tribes come and they say listen don’t let us go over to the promised land which has been God’s will the whole time let us stay here on this side of the Jordan because we have a lot of flocks and we have a lot of animals and this is great grazing land so let us stay here and we won’t go don’t let us go over to the other side of the Jordan now of course in that statement there is a great apparent inconsistency in the request of the sons of Reuben and the sons of GAD C because they have they ought to have valued God’s promise and have wished to settle within the limits of the promised land along with everyone else that’s where God was taking them see the sons of Reuben and the sons of GAD their attention was no longer on entering the land that God had promised them instead their hearts were focused on the rich pastures for their livestock on settling down to build their own houses and to build their own cities see they were thinking about themselves and not and their needs and not the needs of the nation they were they were being very incredibly selfish in their statement they were not thinking about God’s will or the good of all the people they were not thinking that there was any sin involved in making such a request see their request was not consistent with the purpose God had for Israel but was consistent with the sins of their forefathers that’s what they were doing they were just going back committing the sins of the forefathers now look over to chapter 32 in verse 23 let me just bounce forward a little bit it says this if you will not do so behold you have sinned against the Lord and be sure your sin will find you out so in this particular matter we could see that what they were doing is they were actually committing sin before God and going backwards instead of going forward the sin that they were committing was no little sin as far as the nation of Israel was concerned Moses knew at once the effect that this kind of thinking would have upon the hearts of the brethren where he says in numbers chapter 32 verse number 7 look what it says there it was a heart piercing question Moses asked them after the request and verse seven says now why are you discouraging the sons of Israel from crossing over into the land which the Lord has given them so that’s the question he asked them I don’t think they ever thought they were discouraging anyone but by their inconsistent request with the will of God it comes out here from the mouth of Moses that you’re discouraging people from doing the will of God in fact the construction of this verse in the Hebrew is worth mentioning the Hebrew uses two verbs the same word but different constructions and one of the word means to hinder or to hold back or to restrain the heart of someone and the other verb just simply means to discourage but it means to discourage in the seat of courage putting that all together it would be this he was saying to them you’ll hold back your people and you will cause them to be discouraged in their heart to enter the promised land and to receive the gift Jehovah promised to his people you would do that so this kind of mindset drips of worldliness and selfishness this is how it is like with those who live for Auto lui living for heaven who profess to be looking forward and yet there set their affections on things below on the creature on the temporal and not on the eternal see living contrary between what you say and how you really live cannot but otherwise be a stumbling block and a discouragement to those who look on your life so brethren it’s really no small sin to discourage our brothers and sisters in Christ and the only way to avoid this sin is to walk with the Lord to live by faith to live by his promises to live according to the Word of God so I prayed today for a life that is consistent with God’s will in a heart dead to the world or dying to the world and alive to God through Jesus Christ seeing an inconsistent life can manifest manifest itself in many different ways in the church it could be just not attending the assembly of believers on a regular basis it’s it’s you do it on a whim you’re there sometimes you’re there you’re not there other times and when worldly things go on you end up going that way and not being consistent in your worship of the Lord it could be not being consistent serving the church body in some way especially in the use of your spiritual gifts it could be not just practicing a godly lifestyle you’re just not practicing what you already know you’re not putting in other words you’re being hear of the Word of God possibly but you’re not being a doer of the word and so those comes those things come out in the life of the church as possibly being discouraging to someone instead of encouraging to them you don’t realize how many times people just want to see you there I mean I’ve talked to you that day they may not even have anything to do it you that day but they see you there and buy they buy them seeing you there they’re encouraged to want to be faithful to the Lord just in simple things like that and so we have to look at our life what to say are we living in any way are we thinking in any way are we speaking in any way that actually discourages people in nodding and doesn’t encourage them in the Lord that’s what we have to ask I believe that in the New Testament when Paul recorded something I believe with great discouragement when he reported demas leaving him it says in 2nd Timothy for demas having loved this present world deserted me and gone to Thessalonica see that was a discouraging action by someone that was ministering with Paul and so he records it in the Word of God and why did he do it he left because he loves something other than God’s will and God’s Word and the person of of the Lord himself and so he departed and that departure causes in discouragement so and a kid an inconsistent life has to be looked at and changed for the sake of you being an encouragement now let me further probe into this sin and see how it may manifest itself in fact to various other ways in numbers chapter 13 let’s go back for a minute because this is the context of what he was saying to them and I’ll pick it up back again in chapter 32 and the second way to discourage the Brethren is by half-hearted faithless despondent attitudes and actions and words where it says and Moses of course reminds them very sternly what happened the last time they had that attitude in the nation their fathers discouraged Israel from going into the land so look at numbers 13 look at verse 31 and verse 32 it says but the men who had gone up with him said we are not able to go up against the people for they are too strong for us so they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out saying the land through which we have gone spying it out is a land that devours its inhabitants and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size so the Bible says that because of that report they gave actually a bad report or another way of saying a bad report is an evil report because it fails to maintain faith in the promise of God to actually give his people the land of Canaan the promised land even though that land yes had mighty men and large walled cities and strong armies God says I’m gonna defeat those armies for you I’m gonna give you those cities I’m going to give you that land but they came back with something opposite of what God had already said and planned to be sovereignly so and what do they do they came back with words of doubt that God can’t pull this off what he had promised us these people are too great there’s too sophisticated there’s too skilled in war they have walled cities and then tremendous armies they have horses and chariots how are we a bunch of people in the desert which staffs are gonna fight against those people how are we going to win see what did that do it just discouraged the people in which way God can’t do it we looked and we saw with our own eyes and God he’s not going to be able to do this this is impossible this is gonna take a music miracle absolutely that’s that’s right it’s gonna take a miracle for God to do things it takes a miracle for God to bring you to faith in Christ right it’s a miracle the miracle of being born again is definitely that a miracle because you’re not going to come on your own you can’t save yourself you can’t do any of those things God has to do it and that’s a miracle so even the toughest person in your family the more the most obstinate person in your family is the is the person you may say to yourself God will never save that person and you doubt that he could ever do it and yet looking back on your life you realize some of the people that did become believers were the most stubborn obstinate sinful people that you knew how is that because God does miracles and so if we doubt God well you won’t see those miracles and not only that our doubting actually discourages discourages people you know they don’t think God’s great when we’re doubting him they don’t think God can do things way beyond what we could ever ask or think if we’re living in a way that God doesn’t do anything great see that’s just discouraging now let’s go back to numbers chapter 32 and then I want to now fill in what Moses says to these people in verse number eight of Numbers chapter 32 I’ll pick it up there in verse eight it says and this is what your fathers did when I sent them to Kadesh Barnea to see the land for when they went up to the valley of Eshcol and saw the land they discouraged the sons of Israel so that they did not go into the land which the Lord had given them so the Lord’s anger burned in that day and he swore saying none of the men none of the men who came up from Egypt from twenty years old and upward shall see the land which I swore to Abraham to Isaac to Jacob for they did not follow me fully except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and the kenan site and joshua the son of nun for they have followed the lord fully so the lord’s anger burned against israel he made them wander in the wilderness forty years until the entire congregation the generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the lord was destroyed now behold you have risen up in your father’s place a brood of sinful men to add still more to the burning anger of the lord against israel so in other words he was moses was definitely putting in their face that you guys are sinning against us like your forefathers sinned way back when they doubted god to go into the land and now a part of the generation is not going to go into the land because of that sin and you’re doing the same thing at the end of the the wilderness journey you’re doing the same exact thing what’s that going to do to the people it’s just going to discourage them he calls them a brood of sinful men that you’re gonna still add more to the burning anger of the lord so so to see this sin of discouragement always thinks of self first and when committed against our brethren and actually rips out the guts of a person it’s like tearing out the guts of a machine the functioning moving parts which make the Machine go and just leave an external skeleton Satan loves to use this tactic against the Saints usually he does it through words and actions of others such as people who cannot discern between what is of men or what is an evil report and what is of God what is a good report so living half-heartedly hypocritically doubting God is the very seed of committing the sin of discouraging the Brethren so discouragement actually breaks people’s spirits instead of prodding them on in the work of the Lord and in spiritual growth and maturity it actually stifles them and causes them to look down upon what who God is and what God is doing a third way believers can’t commit the spin is also found in numbers chapter 32 and in verse number 6 I want you to see that it says this and here’s the third reason before I read the passage by shrinking or appearing to shrink from service and duties because there are difficulties look what it says in verse 6 but Moses said to the sons of God and to the sons of Reutimann shall your brothers go to war while you yourselves sit here another question piercing question a probing question brother and I I just have to say this going to war is hard living the Christian life is hard continuing in the battle until the job is done is even more difficult the thought of getting out of battle to a more peaceful and comfortable life is very enticing to any one of us to all of us the sons of Reuben and the sons of GAD wish to settle down in a land already one instead of sharing the dangers and the difficulties of war with the Brethren see if some easy work is proposed to them which is accompanied by no great difficulties and which involves no real self-denial they may be ready for it but remember this it is usually God’s way to surround his work with difficulties and often with such difficulties that only he alone can remove Moses said to them very pointedly and leaves the blame squarely at their feet notice in verse 14 and 15 where he this now behold you have risen up in your father’s place a brood of sinful men to add still more to the burning angered Lord against Israel and for if you turn away from following him he will once more abandon them in the wilderness and you will destroy all these people so in other words you never thought that encouraging someone could be so important in the church and amongst the Brethren and how destructive discouragement really is especially if it’s coming from you or me and the way we say and do and live for the Lord so he is Moses is saying to them if you try to get out of the war you will greatly inflame the anger of the Lord and destroy your own people why would you want to do that if you get out of this the battle this would mean that you’re turning away from following the Lord therefore further discouraging the Brethren you don’t have that privilege in other words he’s saying you don’t have that privilege can a person tell the Lord they will not minister anymore because there’s difficulties see he is saying to them figure out a way to stay in the battle figure out a way to accomplish this mission that God promised the people figure out a way because you’re not getting out of it not until Moses confronted them in this manner did they come up with a plan to stay in the battle and prevent incurring the anger of the Lord casting the Brethren off to further discouragement notice what it says in verse 16 of numbers 32 it says then they came near to him and said we will build here sheepfolds for our livestock and cities for our little ones but we ourselves will be armed ready to go before the sons of Israel until we have brought them in to their place while our little ones in the fortified cities because of the habit in the inhabitants of the land verse number 18 we will not return to our homes until every one of the sons of Israel has possessed his inheritance verse 19 for we will not have an inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond because our inheritance has fallen to us on this side of the Jordan toward the east verse 20 so Moses said to them if you will do this if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for the war and all of your armed men crossed over the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven his enmity enemies out from before him and verse 32 verse 22 and the land is subdued before the Lord and then then afterwards you shall return and be free of the obligation toward the Lord and toward Israel and this land shall be yours for a possession before the Lord so in other words when they did what was right they came up with a plan Moses was not letting them out of it they came up with a plan when they did what was right no one was discouraged God’s promise was realized and their request their request was granted for a claim of inheritance on the other side of the Jordan see that’s what happens when we do things that are right before the Lord so let’s not discourage people by shrinking or appearing to shrink from service and duties because there are difficulties rather not I found this out in ministry and in life itself there’s always difficulties there’s always issues there’s always all kinds of people problems and not yet sanctified attitudes there’s time restraints there’s doctrinal tensions all those things are always present but let’s let us be faithful right beside each other in spiritual warfare because that’s what it is it spiritual warfare God is for us to encourage us and to finish our battles he’s there to fight for us so as we do that what what are we to do we’re to be an encouragement to others besides us were to continue to follow the Lord to put his word at the practice to hold to his promises and when we do that and we do that faithfully that is probably the greatest encouragement you know the one of the greatest encouragement you can have as a believer is to know someone who’s been faithful year after year after year after year through thick and thin through troubles through this man and their state still have joy that in their attitude they still have a delight when they speak about the Lord they’re still encouraged about reading and hearing the Word of God and sharing the gospel those those are the probably the greatest blessings of people that I can remember in my life and I think they are the same for you to find someone who’s just downright faithful no matter what’s going on just continue to in their walk with the Lord though those are the greatest encouragement I remember Ken our missionary Ken Newton who spent 40 years in Colombia very tough ministry I mean he used to work with the school where they would have the school children come and of the missionaries who are doing tribal work and they would teach the kids and they said one time the guerrillas came down there pushed him out of the school took over the school and they never did go back and yet they continued on and Ken Newton stayed there 40 years and every time I met the man and his wife he was always a tremendous encouragement to me and he you know I would say you know you’re probably the greatest encouragement that I know in the missionaries that I know out there and I said just simply because you’ve been faithful and I know your issues I know your problems I know the difficulties that you had to deal with on the field and there was nobody there to go and rescue them they had no they they didn’t even have family there to rescue them there’s there’s no coming home and they just stuck with it year after year after year after year after year see to me that’s been current that encourages me to keep going when trouble comes and when life gets difficult just to continue to put one foot in front of the other to breathe in and out and to do the next thing as a believer right that’s encouraging and so if you’re doing that and the next person is doing that and I’m doing that then you know what we’re going to be encouraged by each other right but you know it happens when somebody drops off where they been they’re not consistent in and you know just a fellow believers what happened to them you know that’s not encouraging when you find out too that it’s not really a a real good reason why they’re not there anymore maybe because their job got more busy or maybe they just followed more the line of making more money or what it whatever it is or maybe it’s a sport sports that pull them away from the Lord and and when they’re done with that they get back to it whatever it may be whatever it may be we do all have to look at ourselves and say listen and is my life a life that people can look at that I can encourage someone or is it if I’m being honest with myself is there anything in my life that can cause someone to be discouraged by how I live you know and if you’re honest with yourself take care of it and put things back into perspective because I believe that when you do that you’re gonna find out that from the book of Proverbs and encourage err is someone who is a healer where it says in the Word of God pleasant words are a honeycomb sweet to the soul and healing to the bones also an encourage R is a refresher they know how to refresh people where it tells us in Proverbs also like the cold of snow in the time of harvest as a faithful messenger to those who send him for he refreshes the soul of his masters see and encourage your refreshes people when Timothy was when Paul was in prison Timothy writes while Paul writing the Timothy in the pastoral epistles says the Lord granted mercy to the house of no NIST’s no Anissa fruss for he often refreshed me and then it says this and was not ashamed of my chains he wasn’t ashamed that when I was in prison so encouragers are people who refresh people they have the ability to warm in in a winter they have the ability to give a cup of cool water in the hot summer refreshers warm and cool because because they have certain qualities to them one of the qualities of of an encouraging is they care they care they’re caring they they they want their eight have the ability to pull people who are discouraged out of the holes by showing them somebody does actually care also an encouragers someone who is affirming they affirm a person and help them build a in Gua godly qualities into the life and they usually do that by verbal affirmation see those kind of things should be taking place with us with people verbally encouraging people everyone needs someone in their life to encourage them at some time or another also and someone who is an encourage or is someone who knows how to exhort people they prod push move people along they they are end up being healers refreshers and also encouragers our instructors their mentors their Shepherds proverbs 1621 says the wise in heart will be called discerning and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness that word persuasiveness is the word that means to promote instruction so a an encourage or somebody who comes alongside someone to teach them maybe possibly how to overcome a certain sin to disciple them in the things of the Lord maybe just to come alongside them to pray with them very practically about what’s going on in their life or maybe just to invite them over for a cup of coffee or to meet them somewhere to have a cup of tea or coffee or whatever you drink right for the very reason No Agenda just to encourage them because you noticed something in their life that maybe they’re downcast there’s that you see a downcast countenance in in the way they look and you want to just come alongside hey what’s really going on you know a lot of times people won’t tell you what’s going on right away well they it takes a few conversations to find out what’s really going on because we all want to say well I can work it out myself well no one encouraged your comes along and they want to instruct they want to mentor they want to Shepherd people because they notice those things and then I think also an encourage or is someone who comforts people it says in proverbs 12 verse 25 anxiety in the heart of man weighs it down but a good word makes it glad I remember her hearing reading one time Mark Twain said he once confessed that he could live three weeks on a compliment he says I’m often lifted up by a good word I must admit that I am too when someone gives us a good word it encourages us and some that sometimes that’s all we need we just need a good word someone to notice something in a good work Helen Cole SAR who’s Carol Graves sister now with the Lord used to say with a big smile I have the most wonderful pastor and she really did you really did feel wonderful when she said it she knew how to encourage people with compliments that came out of her heart and you knew it wasn’t phony it wasn’t at all manufactured it was something that you walked away encouraged every time you talk to this lady she may be what some may call bottled sunshine some people are like that and I think encouragers are like that and believe me more than anything else the church needs this kind of person someone who can comfort and bring good news to people and of course a comforter and encouragement will also bring good news of the gospel probably the the greatest news a sinner could ever hear is to be how to be reconciled to God right how will they hear without a preacher who’s going to tell them about the gospel well it’s going to be someone who understands what the gospel is so they can go tell someone else because that’s what people need today they need a gospel of Jesus Christ more than anything else and then one last scripture talks about a man in Scripture I for the sake of time I’m not going to look at all the passages because there’s too many and the person is called the son of encouragement and his name of course you may know his name his name is Barnabas but Barnabas was a flickering light in the dark wilderness and how essential his light was what was he he was called the son of thunder or the son of encouragement and so if you’re reading through the book of Acts you’re gonna find up find out that Barnabas pops up three times in the book of Acts in Acts chapter four he pops up and when does he pop up well when the young church in Jerusalem was forming and it was started a persecution came upon the people in Jerusalem specifically the Jews who were coming to Christ because of the gospel and the Jews were losing their homes and their work and their place in society being kicked out of the synagogue stripped financially and being made desperate in all kinds of ways what does Barnabas do to encourage his suffering brethren you know what he does he sells a tract of land brings it the proceeds all of it to the and distresses distributed to those who have need that’s that’s the first time we hear about Barnabas the son of encouragement do you think that encouraged people when he did that act yes it did it encouraged them and encouraged them in the things of the Lord in the the power of God to meet needs through people second time you find Barnabas is in Acts chapter 11 this time he finds a new convert called Saul of Tarsus who was an outcast because he persecuted the young church so the church didn’t trust his character or his words when he actually did become a believer Saul was shunned and feared by his Christian countrymen so who comes along Barnabas comes along and what does Barnabas do it encouraged his outcast friend he sticks his neck out and puts his own name on the line and he brings Paul before the church and with a big voice proclaims this is our brother he is now a believer he’s now a Christian and we know what happened with the Apostle Paul Saul became the Apostle Paul right well most of the New Testament is written by this man but what if that act of encouragement didn’t happen what if then didn’t happen how much of that how much of that encouragement did Paul did how did it help Paul go on to be what he would become in the church so we don’t realize how little acts of encouragement actually prod people on in holiness godliness and the work of the Lord we find Barnabas popping up a third time in the book of Acts Acts chapter 15 second missionary journey is about to start and Paul and Barnabas are deciding who to take with them Barnabas says let’s take John mark with us now John Mark did go with them on the first missionary journey and the Apostle Paul says absolutely not he deserted us on the last journey he went back to the church in Jerusalem Marx failed once if we take him on the second journey he’s gonna fail again well Barnabas understands the weakness that dwells in the heart of man and so he does he goes to bat for John Mark right so what does Barnabas do they encourage his young friend in spite of his failure he separates from Paul and takes this young friend with him to mentor him he lifted up the failure with encouragement it paid off why did it pay off John Mark ended up writing the Gospel of Mark right so what did that act of encouragement do when when even the Apostle Paul was ready to kick him aside and say I can’t use that man right now and Barnabas says I’ll take him aside I’ll teach them some of the things he needs to learn and that act of encouragement coming alongside of him and rescuing him from himself and from his own failure what did you think that did in the life of Mark where he went on to write the Gospel of Mark but not only did he go on to write the Gospel of Mark it says in 2nd Timothy chapter 4 verse 11 right where it says this Paul says only Luke is with me and then he says this pick up mark and bring him with you for he is useful to me for service well now Mark is matured he’s encouraged he’s got more theology he understands the battle part of ministry and Paul is now saying bring him with you because he’s profitable to me for service that one little act of encouragement I wonder what it did and how it brought mark to where he was and what he became so ask the Lord this morning to make you an encourage her so that you may be equipped to heal the brokenhearted some young couple that you meet maybe they’re up against it in their marriage and you can come alongside of them and help them maybe you can become a refresher of a weary soul maybe a student who is in their last year of college and they’re just burnt out with school or maybe a military person who’s on who’s been on a long deployment and been away from home or a fellow believer who’s just under the weather maybe you can come and refresh them you know enough that you can come alongside of them or maybe you need to come alongside of somebody to instruct them maybe somebody who’s living or speaking in a foolish way you want to come and show them what the Word of God says about how we’re supposed to act and how we’re supposed to live and how we’re supposed to speak and what a wise person looks like as opposed to what a foolish person looks like so you may you may want to come alongside somebody and disciple some young believer about what God taught you and just a very fact for the motive of encouraging them or maybe just a comfort someone that you come in contact with maybe it’s a divorcee struggling to gain back self-acceptance I don’t know any there’s a multitude of issues that we can detect in people and just come alongside them for encouragement you didn’t think encouragement was so important in the church but remember this discouragement and living a life that causes discouragement is sin you didn’t know that before let’s pray Lord this morning I pray and I ask you Father that we may be encouragers that we may find some glimmer of your promise that we may go forward with a good word with a word of comfort instruction of refreshment of healing Lord and that we can be like Barnabas who watches out where he can encourage who watches people that need encouragement who comes alongside eaving to to the point where he’s willing to separate from friend other friends for the sake of taking someone who is less mature and making them there helping them become more mature so I pray Lord that you may encourage us to grow in generous words of commendation I pray Lord that you would give us a perspective and an insight to respond to thoughts that may touch the soul as well as the body of someone else Lord mature us so that our lives are growing in this characteristic of encouragement and let us be encouraging to those in the body that we’re responsible for in the church that we have people we have contact with and I pray Lord if there’s any inkling of a way in our life that has been a characteristic of discouragement help us Lord to remove it to put that thing out of our life so Lord that by our words our thoughts our actions we can be an encouragement to those who are at different levels in their Christian walk and be able to prod them on to greater works and greater ministries and I pray this this morning in the name of Jesus Christ amen

  • The Way of Salvation: Look and Live!

The Way of Salvation: Look and Live!

In today’s Resurrection Day sermon, Pastor Babij compares the bronze serpent of Numbers 21 to Jesus Christ, explaining that, just as the Israelites had to look to the serpent to be saved, so now all men must look to Jesus. Sinners have no power to save themselves; salvation simply comes from personal belief in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor Babij also warns against merely acknowledging sin, trusting in good works to save, and failing to manifest evidence of salvation in one’s life.

  • Joshua, Caleb, and the Spies

    Joshua, Caleb, and the Spies

In this lesson, we look at the account of Israel spying out and then refusing to enter the promised land of Canaan. While most of Israel doubted God and refused to obey God, a faithful remnant that included Joshua and Caleb stood strong and urged obedience. This passage has much to teach believers about trusting God’s Word over fleshly feelings or analysis; when we simply believe God, we not only avoid God’s judgment/chastening, but we do not miss out on God’s great blessings.
